Ye Olde Magick AU
All of you should thank @books-n-guns for this. What once was a silly little AU about the Starks and their fangs and making everyone around them develop a biting kink has now turned into a full-fledged AU with lore and magic and other houses getting characteristics. Basic lore: — Magic exists within the bloodlines of all noble houses, though from different sources. It's strengthened by two things: the existence of a group's homeland and the religion the magic is tied to/originates from. — The First Men got their magic from their adoption of the Old Gods and their Pact with the Children during the Age of Heroes. Since the decline of the Old God religion in the south the northern nobles house don't have as many characteristics as they used to. — The Andels came with their own magic along with The Seven. Since their religion is more widespread the Andel houses have a lot more characteristics than any other house. I'll probably do two more posts: one about the lore, and the others about the gods who are real and are trying to be more active in Westeros because world ending reasons. Because there is now plot, however it may change. Also I might do the other houses. Might. Ideas are welcome.
Without further ado, here are some of houses and their characteristics.
The Starks (now): Sharp fangs (X). Resistant to the cold. In the past the Stark were so cool looking. Bigger and sharper fangs—proper wolf fangs I'm telling you—and pointed ears with ear tufts. Slitted eyes that could see in the dark. Sharp claws and thicker body hair (both men and women), and enhanced senses. Because of Catelyn's river nymph traits, the Stark-Tully kiddos can breathe underwater and talk with the fishes. Might also have a bit of enhanced strength. Resistant to cold. Jonny boy, however, doesn't get anything from his Targaryen bloodline until Dany brings back the dragons. Resistant to cold (Stark blood) and heat (Targaryen blood), and breaths fire (Targaryen blood). The Tullys: River nymph traits. Gils and enhanced strength. Haven't changed much though it has been noted they aren't as nymph-like as they were in the past. Don't fuck with their rivers you will be drowned. Can breathe under water and communicate with the fish, hence the trout. Needs to bathe in a river or any body of fresh water once a month or they'll start looking sickly; any longer and they'll die. The Martells: Snake fangs mostly, though there have been some with forked tongues or snake eyes. Rarely all three. Can make their own saliva poisonous at will. Has been known to coat their weapons in their own poison. Resistant to heat though not flame proof. The Baratheons: Horns/antlers. Basic? Yes—but the Baratheons have long since mastered the art of making their horns look both mighty, dangerous, and handsome. Many an enemy has been impaled upon or had their heads ripped off by the house of Storms End. Some say that the ancestors of the Baratheons used to be able to bring storms and fierce winds thanks to the blood of Elenei Durrandon in their veins. The Lannisters: pays their debts shits gold Lion fangs and sometimes manes. Can actually roar. In the past they were as fierce looking as the Starks; humans with lots of lion characteristics such as sharp claws, toe beans, slitted eyes and even whiskers. Some Lannister women were born with lion manes, and there are one or two theories that Lann the Clever was in fact a woman with a mane. The Tyrells: Dryads-Anthousai mixture. Yes, even the males. It's an AU and ASOIAF, and mom says I can. They have flowers in their hair—roses. mostly, though Olenna has a beautiful and deadly flower and thorned circlet—and can shift their skin to be any type of bark of any type of tree so long as they form a connection to it. Looks healthier in the spring/summer; dead looking in winter (no seriously they look fucking dead, and more than once people thought Olenna had finally kicked the bucket. Boy did Tywin have a nasty surprise). Not at all flame proof. The Targaryns:
At first they were the most Basic And Boring of all noble houses. The only thing cool about them was their dragons, and those died out. With Valyria destroyed in the Doom, the Fourteen Flames no longer being followed and the dragons gone, the Valyrian magic within their veins either died out or went dormant. Now they're just heat resistant and beautiful looking. It was only when they started marrying into other bloodlines/houses did they start getting characteristics—or rather, the characteristics of other houses such as Rhaenys Targaryn/Velaryon having antlers and the Baratheon square jaw can someone please start drawing her with it and Baelor Breakspear having the Martell snake traits. That is, until, Daenerys 'Stormborn' Targaryn brings back the dragons. The Dany that stands admist the ashes of her beloved husband is not the same who walked into the flames. The return of dragons has re-awoken the valyrian magic in her blood and it mixes with the westeros magic. She stands tall and unburnt with her dragons in her arms, patches of shimmering silver-gold scales on her thighs, arms, shoulders, breasts, neck, and they follow the curves of her cheekbones. Violet eyes with slitted pupils blink slowly. And protruding from her head are the beginnings of white horns. Soon they will start to grow. They will be elegant and beautiful, up and out, almost like an ivory crown. The Dragon Queen has been born.

Aegon, Prince Jun, Son of Elia the Golden, Prince of Yi Ti
for @spearsndragons
notes:
Headcannons (sorry @spearsndragons i cannae help it let me know if you want me to take it down)
the sheer hold this au has on me, oof.
Anyways, i've been reading too much mxtx, so more yi-tish influence for our boy Jun.
I headcannon Jun as the calm diplomat, but only until his family is safe. Elia's boy in heart and soul, no matter his appearance. A lot of self-hatred, lets himself get hurt easily, almost as a source of penance for looking like his father.
Used to learn the guqin (um violin? no thats erhu yeah zither) but stopped because Rhaegar played the hard (also stringed instrument). He now plays dizhi (flute like my boy wei wuxian).
Wears white, a pale sort of orange, and lavender and light blue. Does not wear red at all.
Does not want to stand out, stands out anyways, so he's learnt to take advantage of it.
Very Yue Qingyuan sort of person, calm and gentle until you cross his line and then it's a quietly slit throat and you should not have said that, no one can insult/hurt my family.
Has a special bond with both his sisters, with Rhaenys for remembering the early years after the rebellion, and with Senya for sharing hair color and standing out.
His younger brothers are gremlins (if i read the five children thing right) and he loves them very much.
Very close friends with Jon (Dayne? Stark? i go with dayne). Both of them often feel as though they do not belong.
Feverently hates the concept of destiny, shattered several ink-pots until people stopped mentioning 天命 (tiān mìng) and 得命 (dé mìng) or heavenly mandate in front of him.
Looks like a cinnamon roll, can and will kill you, or for you in case of his family.

My Targaryen family height chart. Before we proceed, I feel that I must mention that I headcanon most of the Targaryens of being short and most of the Martells as being very tall (except Arianne)
Aerys: 5'3
Rhaella: 5'4
Rhaegar: 5'3
Viserys: 5'2
Daenerys: 5'1
Elia: 5'9
Rhaenys: 6'2
Aegon: 6'0
Aemon/Jon: unpopular opinion, 5'0. I always picture Jon as really short.
Rhaenys, Aegon and Elia are giants in this family.
Bonus, Lyanna: 5'4.

Jon and Aegon used to share a crib in 'all the Targaryen's survive AU'. They shared blankets, pillows, stuffed animals and a crib egg.
In my AU, while all the dragon eggs are stone, the Targaryen's never stopped giving the kids crib eggs.
All my current Targaryen's have them, they just don't keep them out in the open.
Aerys and Rhaellas eggs are both hidden in a secret compartment in their room because Aerys was paranoid about them being stolen
Rhaegars egg is in his study
Viserys egg is attached to the chandelier in his room (he's a bit dramatic.)
Daenerys egg was sewn into one of her stuffed animals, she sleeps with it
Rhaenys egg is in a chest in her room, it's wrapped in several silk blankets
Aegon keeps his and Jon's egg in Aegons closet. Jon and Aegon used to take turns taking care of the egg when they were little but Aerys banned Jon from touching the dragon eggs and he got scared, now the egg stays in Aegons room.

The Freedwomen AU
Children of Lyanna
Children of Rhaella
Children of Elia Martell
In an AU where Rhaegar still dies at the Trident, but the women he had hurt survive and thrive...
Elia and her children are smuggled out onto a boat headed to Dorne with the help of her uncle Lewyn. As she recovers from the trauma while safely back at home, she realizes that she's pregnant due to Rhaegar bedding her one last time before going off to battle. All her loved ones are scared that this pregnancy will kill her but with the help of a skilled midwife and maester, a successful c-section is performed on her without killing her. She brings her last children into the world, a pair of twins and they live a happy life with their mother and siblings.
Tumblr media
Rhaenys Targaryen Martell
"Nyssy"
"Talisa Sand"
"The Sunsailor"
-Being the eldest and having had the most memories of the viciousness of the court in Kingslanding, along with narrowly surviving Amory Lorch's attack, she's incredibly protective of her siblings. Because of this, she also prefers to keep to herself and can take some time to get her to warm up to you.
-She doesn't like being called "Rhae" as a nickname, as she also associates it with her sire who abandoned her, so Oberyn came up with the nickname "Nyssy." Ever since then, it's been a term of endearment for her from her family
-Grew close to her great uncle Lewyn's paramour, Alba Sand, and often loved spending time with and learning from her.
-When she was first brought to the Water Gardens, she enjoyed playing in the water with the other children. This love of the water stayed with her as she grew and she became quite a skilled swimmer and sailor. Her mother would joke that she was half-mermaid, something that has her equal parts embarassed and touched.
-Loves reading on different parts of Dornish history, be it of real accounts or mythological ones. Her favorite story is about how Nymeria came to Dorne, especially the part where she encouraged her people to intermingle with the inhabitants out of a wish to unite them.
-Trained alongside her cousin Obara, wanting to learn how to defend herself and her loved ones. This causes the cousins to be the best of friends and for her to become quite skilled at both the sword and the bow. Whenever she had time, she'd ride out to hunt for birds and would often bring enough for her family to have banquets. During these banquets, the Smallfolk would also be open to feasting alongside their Lords and Rhaenys would enjoy sharing stories with children, low or highborn.
-Loves her little brother Aegon and calls him "Eggy", though not to the extent of their Targaryen ancestors. In fact, the idea of incest puts her off that when Elia admitted that part of Rhaegar's plan behind the prophecy was to marry her and Aegon to "the third head" she was disgusted.
-Prefers to believe she was named after The Queen Who Never Was instead of one of The Conquerors, it makes the idea of her naming more palatable to her.
-Became a skilled merchant thanks to her voyages where she brought back treasures and new trade partners for House Martell. During these voyages, she went under the alias "Talisa Sand" but has also embraced the moniker she had earned, that being "The Sunsailor." She had also caught the eye of a certain redheaded Stark heir while doing a trade deal in White Harbor. She returned his feelings and some say that they had a Rhoynish wedding ceremony while at sea.
-After some confusion regarding her identity was cleared and she and Robb Stark came clean to their families, Ned and Elia permitted them to marry. It not only helped heal any aminosity between Dorne and The North, but it also opened up trade deals between the two kingdoms. After she wed Robb in front of a Heart Tree, she preferred to keep the surname Martell.
-Had three children, a girl named Elana then twin boys named Brennon and Torren. Her children would later found the new cadet House of House Stark, House Sunstark.
Tumblr media
Aegon Targaryen Martell
"Eggy"
"Aegon Swiftspear"
"Aegon the Beloved"
-Very passionate, impatient, and loving. It was often said that he seemed to be his uncle Oberyn born once again, which would make his heart swell with pride as he saw his uncle as more of a father to him than his sire.
-Trained under his uncle in the way of the spear and how to use speed to his advantage. Him incorporating these lessons into duels he participated in earned him the moniker "Swiftspear" which he proudly embraced, seeing as it was similar to the moniker of one of the few historical Targaryens he did like, that being Baelor Breakspear.
-When he learned about Rhaegar's initial plan to marry him and Rhaenys to the intended "third head", the idea seemed so ridiculous to him that he laughed.
-A huge mama's boy, something he was initially embarrassed about but as he grew older, he wore it with pride. To him, Elia Martell would always be the best choice of Queen and he admittedly is bitter over the treatment she had received while at court. As such, he's often the first to react angrily among Elia's children if someone insults her.
-Tended to be extremely impulsive which at first, worried Elia as it could be a sign that he may turn out like his sire. But over time, the positive influence of his relatives helped curb this trait of his, though it does occasionally kick into full gear if anyone mistreats his loved ones.
-Loves the color blue and often wears it, even occasionally dyeing his hair blue. He only does the latter in privacy though.
-Like his uncle, he's bisexual. This sprouted rumors that he had bedded numerous people, though these were highly exaggerated, much like other hypersexualised talk of the Dornish. He's also polyamorous, having gotten into a happy and loving four-way relationship with his cousins Arianne and Tyene along with Ser Daemon Sand. This became a rather scandalous and infamous topic of gossip out of Dorne, but Eggy and his lovers could care less.
-While his older sister was often aloof and kept to herself, he was more outgoing. Smallfolk and nobles alike were drawn to his magnetic personality and he made many friends. He also earned the moniker "Aegon the Beloved" after he and his sister Lorea started suggesting and coming up with laws that could help the smallfolk which his uncle Doran implemented.
-Eventually married Arianne through a wedding following The Faith of the Seven. But the two married their paramours in a Rhoynish wedding ceremony.
-Had six children. His children with Arianne included twin girls named Aria and Elia, then a boy named Maron. His children with Tyene included a girl named Nymella, then a boy named Mors, then another boy named Olyvar. His and Tyene's sons were named after their uncles who died in the cradle. Different cadet branches of House Martell were formed by his and Tyene's children, with Nymella forming House Nymerion, Mors forming House Martell of Planky Town, and Olyvar forming House Martell of the Greenblood.
Tumblr media
Lorea Martell Targaryen
"Rea"
"Lorea the Just"
"Lady Lustrious"
-The older of the twins, being born five minutes before her twin brother.
-Named after her grandmother Loreza Martell. When Elia told Oberyn about her intention to do so, Oberyn admitted that he would want to also name a daughter of his after their mother, so they settled on a compromise.
-Headstrong and confident, she often fought for the right thing to be done. As such, she was often seen by her Uncle Doran's side whenever he oversaw any grievances from his people, often advocating for true justice and fairness. She disliked certain parts of Westerosi culture, such as the kinslaying taboo or bastardy stigma, speaking up for those who killed abusive relatives in self-defense or for bastards whose birth brought them troubles. Because of this, like her brother Aegon, she was loved among the smallfolk but unlike him, the highborn found her to be a thorn on the side. This reputation of hers earned her the moniker "Lorea the Just" which the smallfolk would call her earnestly, while the highborn would call her that mockingly.
-Is very close to her uncle Doran, and he considers her to be another daughter of his. She learned under his tutelage and with her cousin Arianne, they became his most trusted advisors.
-While she mostly dislikes her Targaryen heritage and doesn't have a high opinion of most Targaryen men, she can't help but be fascinated with the lives of the often overlooked Targaryen women. In particular, she loves reading about the daughters of the conciliator and has collected different songs and stories made about Saera.
-Interested in horticulture, medicine, mixology, she learned how to care for different plants and turn them into potions and poisons. These, she would distribute to the smallfolk whenever she visited the Shadow city.
-Between her older siblings, she's closer to Aegon because of their similar dispositions and she's the one who came up with his nickname "Eggy" while he gave her the nickname "Rea"
-Can be very stubborn, and quick to form opinions of people before getting to know them. This has landed her in trouble several times, and while she has improved over time, she still sometimes catches herself making jumping to assumptions of others that she holds onto.
-Because she's the more outspoken of the two, she's the "speaker" of the twins, with her talking for both of them while her brother Lewyn often hides behind her. She was said to shine as bright as her House's sigil, earning her the nickname "Lady Lustrious"
-She's close friends with her cousins Sarella and Elia along with Allyria Dayne.
-While delivering her potions to the Smallfolk, she met a Tyren Toland, who was a son of Lady Nymella Toland's distant cousin. The two fell in love and had three children, a boy named Valero, then a girl named Nymara, then another boy named Teodore. Her and Tyren's sons were named after his cousins Valena and Teora while their daughter was named after her cousin Nymeria.
Tumblr media
Lewyn Martell Targaryen
"Wynyy"
"Lewyn the Scholar"
"The Nomad Prince"
-The younger of the twins, being born five minutes after his twin sister.
-Named after his great uncle Lewyn, who died sacrificing himself to give Elia, Rhaenys and Aegon a chance to escape. He's often seen tending to Lewyn's grave in House Martell's crypt, making sure the candles are lit and flowers are replaced.
-A lover of the arts, he busied himself with painting, pottery, and poetry. It was said that he had a lovely voice and was also skilled at the harp, though people comparing him to his sire whenever they witnessed the latter would upset him. He also loved reading, often being found sitting by a candlelight with his nose buried in a book.
-Very soft-spoken and shy, he often hid behind his mother or sisters' skirts. It was observed that when he was introduced to his extended family, he was initially scared of Doran and Oberyn and that when he and his siblings were first brought to the Water Gardens, he played by himself in a corner of the pools.
-Between his older siblings, he's closer to Rhaenys because they are similarly aloof and prefer to keep to themselves. He often calls her by her nickname "Nyssy" that it's rare for her to call her Rhaenys except during the few times they fight.
-Despite his shyness, it was said that there was a charm to him that could only be noticed once you gained his trust and were close to him. In particular the younger Sand Snakes were fond of him as his gentleness and patience made him a great babysitter for them. He was also close to his second cousin, Meria Sand, who was the granddaughter of Lewyn and Alba through their firstborn, Myriah Sand.
-Unlike his namesake, he wasn't really interested in learning to fight. The most he would do was just learn how to defend himself should he ever become ambushed. He did keep small daggers in his boots though for safety.
-Growing up, he seemed frail and fragile like his mother was, often having to be tended to by Sunspear maesters. Even though his family would always reassure him that they don't mind caring for him, he couldn't help but feel guilty over it.
-Was the first to learn of Rhaenys falling in love with Robb since she told him, at first he was wary of the Stark boy, but grew to like him too and approve of their relationship.
-When he reached his sixteenth nameday, he revealed to his family that he wanted to make something of himself instead of "being a burden to them," wanting to go see more of Dorne since most of his early life was spent indoors out of concern for his constitution. His uncle Doran and his mother initially forbid it, but some convincing from Rhaenys and Oberyn, he was permitted to do so. With his most precious belongings, some food and water, and a spare change of clothes, he left with two Sand Steeds.
-During his travels around Dorne, he regularly wrote to his family and sent them gifts while they would have money sent to him whenever he would temporarily settle in a town or city. To their surprise, they learned that he had acquired a retinue of paramours, as various older ladies had grown drawn to his charm.
-Eventually, he did return to Sunspear with his paramours and many bastard children. His paramours were affectionately dubbed "The Ladies of the Dunes" since he met most of them while traveling through the dunes while his children were called "The Sands of the Dunes" to differentiate them from their cousins the Sand Snakes. While he introduced his paramours and children to his family, Meria Sand would admit she love for him and would proudly become a Lady of the Dune.
-Among his many children were a girl named Larra who was his firstborn, a boy named Elias, twins named Doren and Dara, a child named Alina (who would refer to themself as neither a man and woman), and many more.

skipping out
This is just a fic in a modern Westeros au I wanted to play around with and may turn into a little series. Kind of Fall of the House of Usher-y.
Rhaenys hummed along to the radio as she continued to pack for the weekend getaway her boyfriend had planned. The annual Tyrell Garden Party was to occur at the family’s estate Highgarden, and it was to be the first event where Willas and Rhaenys were officially a couple. They’d been together for four years at this point, but they’d never really made it official in the eyes of the public. Both Rhaenys and Willas were quite private people and there were… outside forces who would not have approved of their dating. The Tyrell parents (and grandparent) still held a grudge over Willas’ injury during a friendly polo match and Rhaenys’ father was still trying to match her with every eligible (non-related) Valyrian man he could think of. The fact that Willas held no ill will toward Oberyn Martell for the accident meant nothing, nor did the fact that Rhaenys very publicly called out her family’s Valyrian supremacist tendencies. Rhaenys had met the Tyrells about six months ago and had won over the formidable Olenna Tyrell soon after meeting.
Renly was still sour that the old woman liked Rhaenys almost instantly, although privately she suspected she’d won over Olenna by not even really trying. In truth she’d been more worried about winning over Mace and Alerie. Still… it would be nice to be able to attend more charity events on Willas’ arm, instead of “bumping into” each other. Her own family (or, rather her Mother’s family) adored Willas and had already insisted he attend the annual Martell New Years Extravaganza. The Targaryens? Well… she’d know after this weekend, wouldn’t she?
Her phone kept pinging as she packed, some notifications barely showing up before being replaced. Rhaenys knew he decision to skip the family gathering would not go over well, but she hadn’t expected to be inundated with messages. Most begged her to reconsider, others cajoled and bribed, while several just outright berated her. Cousin Maegor’s distinct all caps tirades had been deleted without reading. As were Daemon’s and Armond’s. Grand-Uncle Jaehaerys’ long winded “disappointed” text was deleted after she read the first paragraph. Rhaenyra had just outright told Rhaenys not to bother coming to any other event. The cousins she was closest to all sent messages of support and promises to catch up next weekend for a debrief.
Everyone knew why the Conquerors wanted to gather the family.
Everyone knew what Great Grandfather Aegon wanted to say.
Everyone knew that this was where lines were about to be drawn.
Rhaenys had already made her choice, and the person who needed to know the most already knew. She was considering just turning off her phone when Egg’s ringtone began to play. She grabbed her phone before Belarion could begin batting at it and answered it.
“Please tell me you’re not going to the family thing this weekend?” Egg didn’t even bother with a greeting. Rhaenys raised an eyebrow, reaching out to scratch Balerion behind his ears. Her wizened old cat was definitely hanging on more out of spite than anything these days, but he always wanted affection from his human.
“Of course not. I’m going to Highgarden with Willas. Renly will probably be there too,” she replied. Not that anyone in the family really cared about their Baratheon cousins.
“Well… Dad just told Great Grandfather you were coming, and that you’d have good news,” Egg said. They both only called Rhaegar Targaryen “dad” because he hated it and used “baba” for their step-father Myles. Rhaenys scowled, her hand stilling in Balerion’s fur.
“What news?” she demanded. She heard Egg sigh on the other end of the line and heard Shireen murmur something she couldn’t quite make out.
“The news you’re getting engaged to Monterys Velaryon…” her brother sounded nervous, although at this point Rhaenys couldn’t even be mad. Her father’s insistence that she marry a man of “good Valyrian stock” was little more than a joke at this point. The first time he’d tried to set her up on a date with his appropriate Valyrian boy of the week, she’d been utterly furious. Now she just ignored her father and politely told whatever hapless man she was being set up with she wasn’t interested. Honestly, she’d go full non-contact with her father if he wasn’t the one paying her university fees.
“I mean… there will be news to tell after the weekend, but not that…” she conceded. Egg gasped loudly.
“You mean… is Willas proposing? Are you proposing?!” Egg must have gone out of his room and into one of the main areas of the share house he lived in, because suddenly Rhaenys could hear an episode of The Matchmaker: North blaring in the background. She grinned, blushing despite the fact her brother could not see her.
“Kind of? We kind of both proposed during our anniversary trip. He’s officially doing it during the party. Maximum media attention. A massive fuck you to Grandfather, the Old Man and Great Grandfather,” Rhaenys explained.
“Mama and Baba already gave their blessing.” Willas had insisted he ask both her mother and step-father for their blessing, especially since she considered Myles Manwoody her father more than Rhaegar. Egg chuckled and their conversation naturally fell to how the preparations were going for his trip to Essos, how Shireen was, even sharing gossip about their Martell cousins. By the time she hung up, she noticed Willas had left a text message to let her know he’d picked up the ring and was looking forward to seeing her tonight. Rhaenys smiled before sending three red hearts in reply.
She’d met Willas during her first week of undergrad at university. He’d been finishing his final year of a Bachelors in Economics, while she was staring a Bachelors in Linguistics. She’d got lost on her way to her first lecture and he’d helped her find the right building. They’d properly been introduced a month later when her uncle, Oberyn Martell, had invited Rhaenys to one of his famous dinner parties. They’d hit it off almost instantly and only really started dating after a year of friendship. Now Rhaenys was completing her Masters in Linguistics, while saving funds to pay her own way to complete her PhD. Willas had graduated and was helping to run the Tyrell Education Fund, a charity designed to improve schools in low income areas. They’d recently decided to start looking for a house together, preferably one with enough room for Rhaenys’ two cats and one dog as well as Willas’ own hound. Rhaenys still remembered when she and Willas had shown up to her uncle’s dinner party the first time as a couple and he’d simply rolled his eyes.
“Why did I not see this coming?” he’d said. Rhaenys later heard that her sort-of-but-not-really aunt Ellaria had placed a wager with Oberyn about whether or not they would start dating. Ellaria had won. Willas had joined Rhaenys to celebrate the new year in Dorne and Uncle Doran had commented that he was a “fine young man”.
As far as many of her Martell relatives were concerned, their wedding was only inevitable.
Only a handful of her Targaryen relatives knew about Willas, with a smaller number knowing how serious they were. Baelor Breakspear, Luke Velaryon, Baela and Rhaena Velaryon-Targaryen, all the younger black sheep of their family. Renly technically counted in this group, but the Baratheon cousins had been long exiled from family gatherings. They were all part of a group chat where they complained about the family and shared news about their lives that their relatives would not approve of. Like Baelor coming out as non-binary, or Luke deciding he wanted to live with his biological father and neither of his parents. Outside of Renly, none of her cousins had met Willas, but many of them quite approved of him. He was a kind man and unlike many of the men Rhaegar (and their relatives) wanted Rhaenys to date, he cared about the lives of the average person.
Rhaenys finished packing her clothes, including a new dress in green and orange that was a nod to her Martell heritage and the fact she was due to join the Tyrells, when her phone rang again. She didn’t even have to check the screen to know it was her father. Rhaegar would undoubtedly want to try and talk her into coming along, to ensure his children could be pulled back into the family fold. Rhaenys ignored the call and busied herself with picking out jewellery to take on the trip. Moments later the phone rang again, this time with Lyanna’s ringtone. Despite everything, Rhaenys did somewhat get along with her step-mother and was pleased Lyanna was finally divorcing her father. She had yet to move out of Rhaegar’s gaudy townhouse in central King’s Landing, so Rhaenys let the call ring out just in case. She and Lyanna had set up a system when she was a teenager to ensure Rhae would know when it was actually her step-mother and not her father trying to trick her. The tone indicating that she’d got a new voicemail proved her suspicions correct. She stepped back to her bed and deleted the message without listening.
Something something, family reputation, something something, I want what’s best for you…
She had just finished closing the final zipper on her case when one final call came through: Jon. Technically yet another Aegon to add to the list, he’d always been Jon amongst the family and most tended to forget what his birth certificate said. Rhaenys answered, peering out the window to see if Renly was waiting outside. With Willas already in Highgarden she was being driven up in a van Renly was hiring for the weekend. Apart from Rhaenys, he was also picking up Margaery and her new girlfriend from the university.
“Hi Jon. Did Dad put you up to this?” she asked, stepping back from the window. Vhagar, a rather pampered hound, nudged his head under Rhaenys’ hand. She gave him a quick pat before sitting on the floor to allow him to drape over her lap.
“Actually, no. Although Mum is now yelling at him for taking her phone again,” Jon replied with an awkward chuckle.
“I was actually wondering… are you going to the thing this weekend?” Jon had never really felt welcome among the Targaryens, and Rhaenys knew he preferred to hang around her, Egg or Dany rather than try to mix with the rest of their relatives.
“I’m not, sorry. But Egg will be there. So will Dany, I think. She said something about wanting to introduce everyone to a new member of the family,” she replied, continuing to pat Vhagar.
“Oh, right. Well… have fun at whatever you’re going to!” his tone sounded a little forced.
“Um, Rhae? I think I know why the event is happening… I… I’m not really close to Aunt Saera…” Rhaenys didn’t bother trying to hide her smile. She was entirely certain this was due to the Stark influence in his life.
“I haven’t checked lately to see if there are any changes, but I think everyone was wearing something purple? I’ll add you to the group chat,” Rhaenys explained. There weren’t many of them; just those few family members who weren’t so in awe of Grand-Uncle Jaehaerys that they failed to see the giant red flags. Even though she wasn’t going to be present, Rhaenys had packed a purple scarf she was going to wear during the garden party itself where all the photographers from all the various papers could see her. On the other end of the phone, Jon huffed a sound of relief.
“Thanks… as soon as Mum explained what the court case was about, I just knew…” he began.
“I know. I think she really appreciates knowing that even a handful of us support her,” Rhaenys said. She was about to ask how he was handling the divorce when she heard a beep from on the street.
That would be Renly.
“Sorry, have to go. I’ll text you later,” she said. After saying her goodbyes, Rhaenys hung up and convinced Vhagar to get off. She gave all her animals one last pet, grabbed her case and handbag before shouting a general goodbye to her cousin Sarella and left the house. Renly stood by the back of the van, ready to help her stow her case. He was tall and broad shouldered like his older brother, Robert, but lacked the bulk the eldest Baratheon was known for. Like Rhaenys, he was darker skinned than most of their relatives although he lacked the purple eyes that marked a Targaryen. Renly had dressed with a road trip in mind; track-suit pants, faded university tee and flip flops. His locs were piled on top of his head in a haphazard bun. Renly grinned when he saw her, giving her a tight hug before opening the boot and hauling her case inside.
“Ready to go?” he asked. Rhaenys nodded, helping him close the boot.
“Did you get the threatening messages from Maegor, Daemon and Aemond?” she asked. Renly rolled his eyes, leaning against the van.
“You mean the Brothers Edge? Yeah. Just deleted the messages. Not like we’re super close to the rest of the family, are we? Like… Great Grandfather Orys doesn’t even talk to his siblings,” he replied. Most people tended to forget that the Conquerors had a half-brother called Orys. He’d been by their side while Great Grandfather Aegon was first running for public office, right up until he’d retired and created the sole airline in Westeros. Orys remained for a while before selling his shares in the company and started his own business. These days Orys Baratheon lived in his wife’s family estate and stayed out of the limelight. Rhaenys privately respected the old man for staying away from his siblings’ bullshit.
With a bow Renly opened the door to the back for Rhaenys and she climbed in with a bow and a grin.
“Hey Rhae! Have you met Sansa? I’ve finally convinced her to come around to meet the rest of the family,” Margaery said, offering a wave in greeting. She had occupied the first row of seats in the back of the van along with a red-haired girl maybe a year or two younger than her. She recognised her from a few of Jon’s pictures on Ravenscroll. She must have been one of his Stark cousins. Rhaenys smiled, offering a wave.
“I haven’t. Hi Sansa. I’m Rhaenys Martell-Targaryen,” she said. Sansa smiled shyly, returning the wave.
“Hi Rhaenys… Jon’s told me all about you,” Sansa said. Rhaenys grinned, claiming the second row for herself. She waved to Loras in the passenger seat, who returned her wave with a grin. Rhaenys pulled out her phone and snapped a quick selfie before sending it to Willas with the message: on my way!!!
As Renly pulled out of the driveway, Willas sent his own selfie from the garden with his hound Florys. Underneath he had written: Can’t wait to see you… Rhaenys grinned happily, warmth rising in her chest. The drive out of King’s Landing was surprisingly quick, largely due to the fact they’d left before peak hour and had missed the majority of traffic. Once they were on the Kingsroad, it would be a straightforward trip up to Highgarden. Rhaenys settled back in her seat, allowing the chatter of the radio and the other conversations to wash over her. She was close to dozing off when she felt someone shake her shoulder to rouse her. Rhaenys blinked, holding back a yawn. Sansa made an apologetic face.
“Sorry. There’s something on the news about your family? Renly said you’d want to hear it…” she said. Rhaenys nodded, stretching her arms above her head.
“...and in breaking news, Saera Targaryen, the daughter of respected politician Jaehaerys Targaryen, is bringing a civil case against her father and mother for claims of abuse…” the newsreader announced. Rhaenys looked down at her phone, noticing a new message in the group chat for Saera’s supporters from Uncle Vaegon.
Ooops… I might have told a reporter….
A few moments later, there was a new message from Saera.
Well… Grandma can’t deny it now.

Chapter Text
Chapter 13 Aerys
“Fourteen years ago, several foolish houses rose up against the noble house Targaryen, they were the houses of Stark, Tully, Arryn, and Baratheon, all because some idiotic lords were executed and a girl was ‘kidnapped’, kidnapped! Can you believe it? What does it matter whore girl went willingly? and those lords deserved to be executed!” "Yes father….i was there I remember.” Rhaegar spoke in an uninterested way. “Yes, yes, yes, you were there, if i remember correctly you were the one whore girl and started that whole thing, yet you hardly did a thing during the rebellion.” Aerys grumbled “Father, what is the point of this conversation? The rebellion failed, everyone who opposed you is dead.” Aerys shook his head. “No, no, everyone who openly opposed me is dead, the snakes who hide in the gardens wrapped around flowers are very much alive. I never trusted house Tyrell, and yet they are coming to visit.” “Yes, father, house Tyrell have always been an ally, they supported us during Aegon the Conqueror's conquest and they supported us throughout the rebellion.” Rhaegar sighed. “Did they? They showed up to battles late, they only won the least important battles and now they seem to have their eyes on your daughter.” “Excuse me?” “Whenever the Tyrells visit I hear whispers about Rhaenys and the cripple heir of Highgarden, whispers of them being together.” Aerys explained in a disgusted way. “Rhaenys wouldn’t, she knows better, even if she would, Elia wouldn’t let her.” Rhaegar replied. “Your Dornish whore of a wife would stop your Dornish daughter from being a whore? What a joke.” Rhaegar sighed but said nothing. “The fact of the matter is the Tyrells can’t be trusted and-.” Aerys was cut off by a knock on his door. “Who interrupts me!?” “Tis I Lord Connington and Ser Gerold, may we enter your grace?” Jon Connington asked from outside the door. “Yes, yes, come in, you two better have a good reason to interrupt me and my son while we meet!” Jon Connington and Ser Gerold Hightower walked in. “Apologies for interrupting your grace but we have some concerning information.” Jon Connington spoke. “Spit it out then.” Aerys replied coldly. “Last night two more of your household knights, Ser Jacor and Ser Seldan, were found dead in flea bottom, their corpses were heavily mutilated and were hung up in the streets.” Ser Gerold spoke. “So?” “My king, as you know these are not the first of your knights to be found dead in a rather gruesome way. Over the past few months several of your knights have been killed in very similar ways.” Ser Gerold replied. “Rats die every day, what's two more? You say these two were in my service but I don't remember them. Tell me when it’s someone important who dies.” Ser Gerold nodded slightly. “Yes, yes of course, your grace.” “Good…Now go if you have nothing else to say!” Jon Connington and Ser Gerold quickly bowed and left. “Twats, all of my councilmen twats i tell you!” Aerys grumbled. “Yes father, I know, everyones a twat.” Rhaegar spoke in a disinterested way. “Would it kill you to be interested in anything?!” “Perhaps if you said something interesting I would listen.” Rhaegar replied quietly. “What did you say?!” Aerys yelled. “Nothing father.”
