Research on the 2019 Christchurch Mosque Attacks.

On 15 March 2019, two consecutive mass shootings occurred in a terrorist attack on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. The attacks, carried out by a lone gunman who entered both mosques during Friday prayer, began at the Al Noor Mosque in the suburb of Riccarton at 1:40 pm and continued at the Linwood Islamic Centre at 1:52 pm. 51 people were killed and 40 were injured.

The gunman, 28-year-old Brenton Harrison Tarrant from New South Wales, Australia was arrested after his vehicle was rammed by a police unit as he was driving to a third mosque in Ashburton. He was described in media reports as a white supremacist. He had live-streamed the first shooting on Facebook, and prior to the attack, had published an online manifesto; both the video and manifesto were subsequently banned in New Zealand and Australia. On 26 March 2020, he pleaded guilty to 51 murders, 40 attempted murders, and engaging in a terrorist act, and in August was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole – the first such sentence in New Zealand.

The attack was linked to an increase in white supremacy and alt-right extremism globally observed since about 2015. Politicians and world leaders condemned it, and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described it as "one of New Zealand's darkest days". The government established a royal commission into its security agencies in the wake of the shootings, which were the deadliest in modern New Zealand history and the worst ever committed by an Australian national. The commission submitted its report to the government on 26 November 2020, the details of which were made public on 7 December

How did Parliament respond? 

When Parliament sat for the first time following the attacks, on March 19, then Speaker Trevor Mallard led a procession of leaders from different faiths into the House. Usually, non-members are not allowed to walk on the floor of the debating chamber when Parliament is in session. 

Sittings of the House normally begin with the parliamentary prayer. The March 19 session was instead opened with a prayer in Arabic from Imam Nizam ul haq Thanvi, translated into English by Tahir Nawaz. This was followed by the parliamentary prayer in te reo Māori by then Assistant Speaker Adrian Rurawhe, and in English by then Deputy Speaker Hon Anne Tolley.

NZ Changed their Gun Laws

Reforming New Zealand’s gun laws 

Parliament acted swiftly after the mosque attacks to introduce gun laws to improve public safety and tighten gun control in New Zealand.

The first of these was the Arms (Prohibited Firearms, Magazines and Parts) Amendment Bill. It was introduced to Parliament just over a fortnight after the attacks. The bill aimed to remove semi-automatic firearms from circulation and use by New Zealand’s general population, by banning semi-automatic firearms, magazines, and parts that can be used to assemble these.

Usually, bills take months or even years to pass through the several stages to becoming law. However, in this case Parliament agreed to accelerate the process, and the bill became law within 11 days.  

The bill had near unanimous support across the House, with all but one of Parliament’s 120 MPs voting for it.

In September 2019, the Arms Legislation Bill was introduced. This bill aimed to introduce  tighter controls on the use and possession of firearms. It also re-stated the purpose of the Arms Act to make it clear that owning a firearm is a privilege, and that people with that privilege have a responsibility to act in the interests of personal and public safety.

The bill enabled the creation of a registry to store information about licence holders, their weapons, and ammunition. It also strengthened the licensing system by creating a new system of warning flags to show if someone is not a fit and proper person to hold a firearms licence.

The Arms Legislation Bill bill was granted Royal assent in June 2020.

Lavender Galore!

After meeting a couple of lavender farmers at the Spencer Park Market & Gala, they told us about the Christchurch Lavender Gardens in Yaldhurst! On Jan 14, Margaret and I decided to take the trip out to see them. Just about a 25 minute drive, right off the side of a state highway, the gardens felt like you were in the country. The hedges along the side of the garden shut off all the noises of the cars on the roads, and the fragrance of the lavender makes it a really calming environment. It was funny though, because right as we were walking in, we stopped to smell the lavender, and you really couldn't smell anything! It was only as we walked in a bit further that you could really smell it. Maybe it was because there were different varieties? The direction of the wind? Who knows. There were a few other gorgeous plants in well tended beds as you were leaving, as well.

After we left the lavender garden, we went to Church Corner, which is a bit like a little Chinatown. There are a collection of Asian markets, restaurants, and shops, so we grabbed a few snacks and a bubble tea (I tried chocolate hazelnut milk tea, which was delicious!) and wandered around the markets a bit. Then we decided to head for one more stop at the Riccarton House and Bush for a walk.

There were gorgeous flowers, a great walking route through the woods, a very nice fruit and veggie garden, and then we found a pear tree that was readily dropping fruit! Don't worry, we made sure it was edible before eating any, and it was delicious!

The building's English Cottage style is Tudor influenced. The Dux Brewing Company continues to manufacture and supply craft beer, such as the Ginger Tom. Then 2012 saw the opening of Dux Dine in the neighbouring suburb Riccarton. In late 2011 the music venue Dux Live! opened in Addington. The wider Arts Centre was forced to close all its buildings due to severe damage, meaning the famous vegetarian and seafood establishment, alongside other tenants, was evicted. 2011 earthquake Īs a result of the 22 February 2011 Christchurch earthquake, the Dux de Lux closed due to structural damage. The single is dedicated to the Dux de Lux as their early Christchurch venue. New Zealand band Salmonella Dub will release the single Same Home Town in 2013 in honour of their 20th birthday. The Dux de Lux, which is Latin for Masters of the Finest, opened in late 1978. After the student union had moved out, the building was converted into a bar, music venue, and restaurant. While a 1954 fire damaged much of the interior, construction in 1955–1956 added a dining room and three meeting rooms. From 1929, the building served as the Student Union. An addition, low brick walls around the street frontage, was made in 1928–1929 by Collins and Harman. The architects were sympathetic to the original design and continued with the original style of English Domestic Revival style architecture. Although the Students' Association rejected the idea, the architects Collins and Harman were tasked with developing plans for extending the building. The board of the university suggested that Llanmaes, which had just been purchased, could be used by the students. The estimated cost of £30,000 proved to put this aim out of reach. Hearn won a design competition with his entry in Gothic Revival style, in keeping with the college's older buildings. Regarded as a temporary solution, the students pursued the idea to have their own building. An immediate issue was to find a suitable place for students to meet, but it was not until 1921 that a tearoom was set aside for this purpose. The Canterbury Students' Association was formed in 1894. Llanmaes was the last building on the block purchased by the college. Either in 1875–1876 on in 1877, the Benjamin Mountfort-designed clock tower was the first building erected by the college on the block bounded by Worcester, Rolleston, Hereford and Montreal Streets. Ĭanterbury College, from which the University of Canterbury developed, was first established in 1872. For the next three years, the building was used as the rector's residence. When Vincent died, the building was purchased by the University in 1926. He lived in the building until 1911 and sold it to Eliza Vincent. Chilton was a zoologist, the first rector to be appointed in Australasia, and the first person to be awarded a D.Sc. The house changed ownership to Dr Colin Graham Campbell in 1899, who onsold it to Dr Charles Chilton in 1904. Lewis gave it the Welsh name of Llanmaes, which means 'the church in the meadow'. The merchant John Lewis commissioned the building with Francis Petre as his private residence, and it was constructed in 1883, in a Tudor Revival style similar to Pinner House in Dunedin, another Petre design.

In 1866, aged 20, Marie set off from Scotland, on her own, to marry George Low Beath, a man 19 years older than her – she met him several years previously in Dunfermline, Fifeshire. How they sustained their relationship for two to three years while George travelled to Melbourne, Victoria, then to Christchurch, is unknown. By the time Marie left Scotland George had set up a small drapery shop in Christchurch in partnership with Oscar Kirby, which had quickly prospered.

Marie arrived in Lyttelton in January 1867, one of nine first-class cabin passengers on the clipper Mermaid. The journey had taken 81 days.  

One month later, in February 1867, she married George at St John’s Anglican Church, Latimer Square. By the end of 1867 their first child was born; four more were born during the next 15 years. Their only son, George Malcolm (9 years), and their oldest daughter, Laura Christian (14 years), died two weeks apart in mid-1881 – during an epidemic caused by poor drainage. These plagued Christchurch during its earlier years.

Marie’s mother Jemima and siblings Kate, Frank, Isabella, and Robert joined her in Christchurch two years later, arriving as first-class cabin passengers on the Matoaka in February 1869.

George Beath had purchased a freehold property on Riccarton Road and had a large and comfortable house built – he called it Leslieville, after his birthplace in Scotland. As the wife of a successful businessman, Marie had servants to tend to the work a large household required, and a gardener to develop and maintain their large garden and orchard.

The Beath family were musical and artistic, and active participants in the Congregational Church, the YMCA, and the YWCA. Marie seems to have been supportive of her sisters’ work in the temperance and suffrage movements, but she played no active part in the associated organisations.

Marie’s daughter Margaret and her sister-in-law Alice also signed sheet 324.

Marie was 83 when she died in January 1930. She was interred in the family grave in Addington cemetery, with her two children Laura and George, and her husband [died 1914]. Close by is the grave of her sister Kate [died 1934], in the same plot as their mother Jemima [died 1881].

Panel materials: Embroidered runner decorated in cross stitch by my husband's grandmother, Margaret Ellen Jenkins, probably around 1900. Margaret's father, John Jenkins, was a gold miner who worked alongside Gabriel Read in Otago in 1863. I extended her design with a chevron of chain stitch, with four cross stitches inserted to represent women getting together to strive for a goal, in this case Votes for Women.

Fri 29 Nov - Springs Junction

Arrive Christchurch 1230 AM. Get through OK, pick up Prado and go to AirBnB 10 mins awa, Abbey House. Finally get to bed about 0130.

Up about 9am. Pack and head into Christchurch. Have good breakfast at Park Ranger in Riccarton. Drive into town centre, visit the wrecked cathedral. Head south and up towards Banks Peninsula. Stop at Sign Of The Kiwi cafe and park, do short walk where Holly is wearing too white a shoe. Then drive along the rim for short drive.

Drive south to Governors Bay and then to Lyttleton but don’t stop. Head north on Route 74. End up in Rangiora and have sushi for lunch. Head on up from there towards our Fri night stop.

The drive took us up the valley of the Waiau river, with great geomorphology. Had to stop for  while because of accident on highway where car had left road and gone under bridge. Get to Maruia Springs Cottage about 1730 after crossing Lewis Pass. Get crap food from local motel takeaway. DCM goes to take pics but gets eaten by midges in the process. Everyone pretty knackered.

To the Next One

When I left off in the middle of last week I had my girlfriend Maria visiting me here in Christchurch. As I am writing this now, my parents are currently somewhere in a hunk of metal (some know it as a plane) over the Pacific Ocean, en route to Christchurch as well. Remember when I said that people were using me as an excuse to come to New Zealand? I wasn’t kidding. Every week for the next month I will be spending time with someone that is either my family or a friend from Michigan. Who knew home could feel so close when you’re 8,700 miles from it?

In the last few days of Maria’s visit, we got to explore some nice places in Christchurch. During this time, I’ve realized just how little I have actually explored the cool things Christchurch has to offer. We spent a lot of time walking through the expansive Botanic Gardens in downtown and even got an amazing meal at a restaurant called the Curator’s House which used to house the curator for the Botanic Gardens. On her last day in Christchurch, we went to the farmers market in the Riccarton Bush where I had gone to a couple weeks back with the other Maria from Michigan.

After Maria headed out on Saturday, I had to buckle down to finish, and start for that matter, a report for my engineering materials class. It was a gritty process but I managed to get it done in time for its deadline at the start of the week. Since then, I have been try to enjoy my time actually learning to cook some healthy meals for myself and get in shape for the possibility of running a half marathon at the end of the semester here in New Zealand. I have told myself many times that I was going to train for a half marathon but have never actually done it and I figure I might as well do it when I’m in one of the most beautiful countries in the world (totally unbiased). I haven’t quite committed to it yet, but I am going to do my best to get in shape for the time being. 

That’s all I have for this week and when I check in next we will see how not just one, but three Fermanichs survive in Christchurch!

Tidbit: Though New Zealand is famous for its Merino sheep wool, much of the wool yarn is actually made of a portion of possum fur. The brushtail possum was introduced in the 19th century to New Zealand from Australia. This little marsupial is very different from the kind of possums that we have in the US and has very soft fur. These animals are wreaking havoc on New Zealand’s natural environment and pose a real threat to many plants and animals here.
