The First Full-Size 3D Scan of The Titanic
The mysterious 1912 sinking of the luxury passenger liner, the Titanic, has long served as a source of fascination for many.
Historians now believe that a new underwater scanning project may provide answers to some of the unanswered questions regarding the tragedy that killed more than 1,500 people.
A team of scientists have used deep sea mapping to create “an exact ‘Digital Twin’ of the Titanic wreck for the first time,” according to a press release Wednesday from deep sea investigators Magellan and filmmakers Atlantic Productions.
By carrying out the “largest underwater scanning project in history,” scientists have managed to “reveal details of the tragedy and uncover fascinating information about what really happened to the crew and passengers on that fateful night” of April 14, 1912, the press release said.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Scans of the wreck were carried out in the summer of 2022 by a specialist ship stationed 700 km (435 miles) off the coast of Canada, according to the release. Tight protocols prohibited team members from touching or disturbing the wreck which investigators stressed was treated with the “utmost of respect.”
Every millimeter of its three-mile debris field was mapped in minute detail, the press statement said. The final digital replica has succeeded in capturing the entire wreck including both the bow and stern section, which had separated upon sinking in 1912.
One such example can be found on the propeller where the serial number can be seen for the first time in decades.

Roughly 715,000 images and 16 terabytes of data were gathered during the expedition – which Magellan estimates to be “approximately ten times larger than any underwater 3D model that’s ever been attempted before,” Magellan CEO Richard Parkinson said.
Parkinson described the mission as “challenging,” referencing the team’s fight against “the elements, bad weather, and technical challenges.”
Whereas previous optical images of the ship were limited by low light level and the poor light quality 12,500 feet below water, the new mapping technique has “effectively taken away the water and let in the light,” the press release said.
According to 3D capture specialist Gerhard Seiffert, the “highly accurate photorealistic 3D model” has enabled people to zoom out and look at the entire wreck “for the first time.”
“This is the Titanic as no one had ever seen it before,” Seiffert added.

History: A Remarkable New View of the Titanic Shipwreck is Here, Thanks to D eep-sea Mappers
— May 20, 2023 | By Rachel Treisman
Tumblr media
Scientists were able to map the entirety of the shipwreck site, from the Titanic's separated bow and stern sections to its vast debris field. Atlantic/Magellan
A deep sea-mapping company has created the first-ever full-sized digital scan of the Titanic, revealing an entirely new view of the world's most famous shipwreck.
The 1912 sinking of the Titanic has captivated the public imagination for over a century. And while there have been numerous expeditions to the wreck since its discovery in 1985, its sheer size and remote position — some 12,500 feet underwater and 400 nautical miles off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada — have made it nearly impossible for anyone to see the full picture.
Until now, that is. Using technology developed by Magellan Ltd., scientists have managed to map the Titanic in its entirety, from its bow and stern sections (which broke apart after sinking) to its 3-by-5-mile debris field.
The result is an exact "digital twin" of the wreck, media partner Atlantic Productions said in a news release.
"What we've created is a highly accurate photorealistic 3D model of the wreck," 3D capture specialist Gerhard Seiffert says. "Previously footage has only allowed you to see one small area of the wreck at a time. This model will allow people to zoom out and to look at the entire thing for the first time ... This is the Titanic as no one had ever seen it before."
The Titanic site is hard to get to, hard to see and hard to describe, says Jeremy Weirich, the director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Ocean Exploration program (he's been to the site).
'Titanic' was king of the world 25 years ago for a good reason
"Imagine you're at the bottom of the ocean, there's no light, you can't see anything, all you have is a flashlight and that beam goes out by 10 feet, that's it," he says. "It's a desert. You're moving along, you don't see anything, and suddenly there's a steel ship in front of you that's the size of a skyscraper and all you can see is the light that's illuminated by your flashlight."
This new imagery helps convey both that sense of scale and level of detail, Weirich tells NPR.
youtube
Magellan calls this the largest underwater scanning project in history: It generated an unprecedented 16 terabytes of data and more than 715,000 still images and 4k video footage.
"We believe that this data is approximately ten times larger than any underwater 3D model that's ever been attempted before," said Richard Parkinson, Magellan founder and CEO.
James Cameron aims to finally put that 'Titanic' door debate to rest, 25 years later
Experts in Titanic history and deep-sea exploration are hailing the model as an invaluable research tool. They believe it could help scientists and historians solve some of the ship's lingering mysteries — and learn more about other underwater sites, too.
Longtime Titanic explorer and analyst Parks Stephenson described the model as a "game changer" in a phone interview with NPR.
"It takes [us] further into new technology that's going to be the standard, I think, not just for Titanic exploration, but all underwater exploration in the future," he adds.

The effort yielded 16 terabytes of data and more than 715,000 still images, in what Magellan calls the largest underwater scanning project ever. Atlantic/Magellan
A Project Years in the Making, Featuring Romeo and Juliet
Explorers and artists have spent decades trying to depict the Titanic wreck, albeit in lower-tech ways.
After Robert Ballard — along with France's Jean-Louis Michel — discovered the site in 1985, he combined all of his photos to form the first photomosaic of the wreck, which showed the ship's bow and was published in National Geographic. Those efforts have been replicated in the years since.
"But the problem with all that is it requires interpretation," Stephenson says. "It requires human interpretation, and there are gaps in the knowledge."
Flash forward to the summer of 2022. Scientists spent six weeks capturing scans of the site, using technology that Magellan says it had been developing over the course of five years.
The expedition deployed two submersibles, named Romeo and Juliet, some 2.3 miles below the surface to map every millimeter of the wreck site.
They didn't go inside the ship, let alone touch the site, in accordance with existing regulations, and paid their respects to the more than 1,500 victims with a flower laying ceremony.
And they describe the mission as a challenge, with the team fighting bad weather and technical challenges in the middle of the Atlantic.
"When we saw the data come in it was all worth it," Seiffert says. "The level of detail we saw and recorded was extraordinary."
The scientists spent months processing and rendering the data to create the "digital twin," which the company says it's looking forward to sharing publicly.
Stephenson saw an early version of the model, when Atlantic Productions brought him on to consult on its validity. So did Ken Marschall, the maritime artist known for his Titanic paintings.
"We've both seen it with our eyes. We've both seen thousands of digital images of the wreck in imagery, moving imagery," Stephenson said. "But we'd never seen the wreck like this. It was different, but at the same time you just knew it was right."
Tumblr media
Experts say the model will be a valuable tool for future Titanic research and deep-sea exploration in general. Atlantic/Magellan
There's Still a Lot Left to Learn About the Titanic
Can there really be that much left to discover about the Titanic, more than 110 years on?
Stephenson says "at the end of the day, none of this matters." But there's a reason people keep visiting and talking about the wreck, he adds, and it's not because of any buried treasure.
"It's fame, I guess," Stephenson says. "People can't get enough of Titanic. And as long as people can't get enough of the Titanic, people will keep going to ... these mysteries."
In Stephenson's case, it's the unanswered questions that keep drawing him back.
"I've been grinding away at this for a while, and I'm not on a crusade to dismantle the Titanic narrative that has grown since 1912," he says. "But ... I have had enough experience and seen enough evidence that makes me seriously question even some of the most basic aspects of the Titanic story."
One example: Stephenson says there's reason to doubt the long-accepted conclusion that the ship hit the iceberg along its starboard side. He points to a growing body of evidence that suggests it actually grounded briefly on part of the iceberg that was submerged underwater instead.
Just looking at the preliminary modeling has helped Stephenson bring a lot of his evidence and questions into focus — it may be early days, but he says he already has a better understanding of how the ship's stern came to be in such bad shape.
Stephenson sees this moment as a paradigm shift in underwater archaeology.
"We're essentially getting to the end of the first generation of Titanic research and exploration, and we're getting ready to transition into the next generation," he says. "And I think this tool basically signals a shift from that generation to the next."
Stephenson wants to use the model to document the extent of Titanic exploration up to this point, from Ballard to James Cameron and beyond. He says a "massive project" is underway, and will hopefully result in a scientific paper and online archive. Then, he plans to use the tool to answer whatever questions remain.

There have been "photomosaics" and other renderings of the shipwreck over the decades, but this is the first such 3D model. Atlantic/Magellan
The Titanic is a Gateway Into Deep Ocean Exploration
As a maritime archaeologist, Weirich is most interested in what the ship's condition can teach us about how to better preserve deep-sea shipwrecks in general. For example, how has it impacted the environment since it sunk, and how have the visits since its discovery impacted the site?
The Titanic site has been designated as a maritime memorial, which makes preservation even more important. And Weirich says research on everything from its rate of deterioration to the microbial environment can be applied to other such sites worldwide.
There are estimated to be hundreds of thousands of wrecks in the world, from ancient wooden ships in the Black Sea to World War II vessels in the Gulf of Mexico, Weirich says.
And this kind of technology could play a crucial role in learning more about deep-sea environments in general, from undersea resources to geological features to unknown species.
Weirich says he hopes these images of the Titanic will give people a greater appreciation for the deep ocean, and a better understanding of just how much is left to explore.
"The story of Titanic and the shipwreck itself is extremely compelling, but it is a gateway for people to understand what we know and don't know about the deep ocean," he adds.
Weirich remembers being personally captivated by those first images of the shipwreck in National Geographic when he was just 10 years old. That sparked his lifelong interest in ocean exploration — and he hopes young people seeing these latest images are inspired too.

Richard Tauber (1891-1948) was an immensely popular artist who enjoyed a 30+ year career that encompassed opera, operetta, concerts, films, radio, conducting and composition. Born Richard Denemy (NOT Ernst Seiffert, as has often been stated) in Linz, he was the son of theatrical performers who were married…just not to each other. The future tenor was raised in the theater until his mother’s financial circumstances became dire. She reached out to the boy’s father (who was unaware that he had a son), who granted financial assistance and eventually adopted young Tauber. When plans for the boy to study for the priesthood fell through, the elder Tauber responded by taking the youngster on the road with him. Young Tauber became obsessed with theater and music and spent most of his time at his father’s theater. He also became a fan of Heldentenor Heinrich Hensel and began dabbling in singing. Teachers dismissed him as having no future as a singer…although his insistence on singing Wagner for them may have influenced this assessment! Undaunted, Tauber enrolled in the Conservatory at Frankfurt, where he studied composition, piano and conducting. In 1911 Tauber’s father took him to Carl Beines, a leading voice teacher in Freiburg. Beines heard potential in the young man and advised him to abandon Wagner for Mozart and Lieder. After only a year of work, Beines helped Tauber to cultivate his voice into a polished instrument. The tenor’s first performance took place in May of 1912 in a Lieder recital in Freiburg. Meanwhile, Tauber’s father had been appointed director of the New State Theater in Chemnitz and, hearing his son’s progress, arranged for him to make his debut as Tamino in Die Zauberflöte on March 2, 1913. He had already signed a five year contract with Dresden Hofoper, where he sang over 50 diverse roles (he had already developed a reputation as a remarkably quick study), including Max in Der Freischütz, Nathaniel (and later the title role) in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos and even Tonio in La Fille du Régiment. Tauber also made guest appearances in Zoppot, Berlin, Breslau, Lille and Riga. His Vienna Staatsoper debut was as Rodolfo in June of 1920. Two months later, his celebrated association with Franz Lehár began with an appearance as Jöszi in Zigeunerliebe at the same theater. During the 1920s, Tauber divided his time between Dresden, Berlin, Vienna, and Salzburg, eventually building a repertoire of over 100 roles. At the peak of his success, however, the tenor was struck down with rheumatic fever, which left him paralyzed and in need of constant care. Although he regained his health, his joints were affected, leaving him with severe physical problems. Tauber learned to mask his mobility issues, as well as the debilitating effects of the illness on his voice. Now faced with a curtailed range, the tenor turned more and more to operetta and concerts, where he could choose his repertoire carefully. His need to sing his top notes softly may have become a hindrance to any other tenor. To Tauber, it became a trademark. Tauber left Germany at the dawn of the Nazi regime, settling in London. He became more and more involved in radio and took time to appear in several popular films. His stage and concert career continued throughout the ‘30s and ‘40s, with appearances in Holland, Switzerland, Australia, South Africa, the U.S. and Canada. His Covent Garden London debut occurred in 1938 as Tamino and his operetta, Old Chelsea, premiered in Birmingham in 1942. A failed Broadway production of Land of Smiles left the tenor in debt and he was compelled to launch a U.S. concert tour to recoup his losses. By now Tauber was so crippled with arthritis that he could barely move on stage and he was plagued by a chronic cough, which caused the loss of his voice at times. Still, his financial situation demanded that he continue working. On September 21, 1947, Tauber, now suffering from terminal cancer, was invited to appear in Vienna
Staatsoper’s guest production of Don Giovanni at Covent Garden. This turned out to be Tauber’s final stage performance. A week later, the aging tenor was hospitalized, and a lung was removed. After brief struggle with his illness, Richard Tauber passed away on January 8, 1948. He was 56. Richard Tauber was, perhaps, an unlikely opera star. His voice, even in his prime, was problematic beyond a high A. Severe arthritis limited his stage movement and he was afflicted with a permanent squint in his right eye. Tauber, however, was able to overcome these challenges (even adopting a monocle to conceal the squint!) to become a great musical artist, an elegant personality and a beloved figure who epitomized old Vienna. His 730 recordings reveal an artist who never went past the limits of his own instrument and sang with great sensitivity.

Sitting on a log . . . ( UAF-1985-122-273)
A woman and several children sit on a log outside.  One child is holding a cat, the woman is holding a small dog, and there is another dog nearby.  Caption reads: "Fort Davis - Nome Alaska.  August 1st, 1909.  Children are from left to right: Eleanor Harmon, Kathryn Bomford, Vincent Seiffert, Rudolph Fink, Eleanor Fink, "Aunty" Esther Hank, Joe Hanks (the dog) and Richard Soderburg."  This seems to be the same people at about the same time as in photos UAF-1985-122-274 and UAF-1985-122-275.

Summary, Week 11
The Ulm School (Hochschule für Gestaltung Ulm, if you want to be really accurate about it) operated from 1955 to 1968. In that time, the Product Design department worked with Braun to design appliances, audio and film equipment, and personal care devices (shavers, hair dryers). The designs introduced a confidence with the use of mixed materials, combination of rational geometric form with organic form, mastery of sculptural and functional form language, and exploration of how products incorporating new technology can seem familiar and easy to use. Dieter Rams, Gerd Alfred Müller, and Fritz Eichler formed the core of a design department at Braun which created a standardized approach to process and aesthetic which defined Braun's output for decades. At the same time, new plastics and new manufacturing methods for plastics allowed designers to explore form in new ways. Designs appeared in the 1960's that were restricted not by the grain or malleability of material, but by the imagination. Designers challenged the limitations of plastic and molds by designing ever larger and more complicated objects. Plastic products began to flow into people's lives and import with them bright colors, shiny surfaces, and a sense of fun. Expanded plastic foam allowed new forms and products. Plastic was also introduced into humbler objects like food packaging, soda bottles, and plastic bags. The cheapness and novelty of plastic made it prevalent in every aspect of life around the world in the early 1970’s. creating entirely new behaviors and patterns of consumption. Along with all of the discarded bottles and broken toys came an understanding that the Earth, though rich in resources, was and is a delicately balanced system in danger of being overcome by the sloppy way we are living on it. Designers included: The BIG names: Wilhelm Wagenfeld Hans Gugelot Fritz Eichler Gerd Alfred Müller Dieter Rams Reinhold Weiss Gino Colombini Anna Castelli Ferrieri  Giulio Castelli Joe Colombo  Olof Bäckström  Massimo & Lella Vignelli  Ettore Sottsass  Perry King  Richard Sapper  Marco Zanuso  Mario Bellini  Helmut Bätzner  Vico Magistretti  Verner Panton  Giovanni Maur  Earl S. LMA’s Got SKILLS! That sure was fun tonight, and, for those who missed this Legal Marketing Association conference talent show, the performances from #legalmarketing luminaries Jason Klika, Heather Layfield McCullough, Jim Jarrell, Jim Durham, Lauren McNee, Richard Hefner, Brenda Pontiff, and Renee Branson were divine! Congrats to our winner - voted on by the audience - Jason! Highlights included glorious vocals, evocative poetry, whimsical interpretive dance routines, soothing instrumentals, grand comedy, soothing bedtime stories, a sh*t-ton of Sondheim, ridiculous costumes, and some very cute dogs. Heaven! Thank you to an incredibly patient team, including Kristy Perkins, Malaika Palmer, Christina Abes (and my fearless engineer husband John Mola) who worked through my various and sundry tech issues and general hysteria earlier in the afternoon. Such grace, calm, and talent! Thanks to our conference co-chairs Kristen Bateman and Jonathan Mattson and LMA president Jill Mason Huse for their faith in me, for their encouragement, and for allowing me to let my freak flag fly (photographic evidence follows). This is a helluva community! I am grateful to have been embraced by such kind and talented humans, and, as we noted tonight, our personal “brands” should celebrate every aspect of our personalities, talents, and interests. Thank you to HQ’s Danielle Holland , Kat Seiffert , Kristin Frankiewicz and team for their tireless support and promotion. #lma20 #lmamkt #lma20selfie - thank you, Lauren and Renèe, for the #greatestshowman screen grabs too! @lmaintl @jahuse @kristenbateman96 @kristyperkins1 @brendapontiff @resilience.bounty @jimjarrell #showtunes #skills #quarantinelife #talent #sondheim #barbrastreisand #spiderman #batman #starwars #frozen #lizaminnelliforpresident #harleyquinn #madonna #janetjackson (at Saline, Michigan) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGltSXXjgGq/?igshid=o2mwlrlt3ayo

Behind an anonymous, unimposing warehouse facade in the Sydney suburb of Rosebery lies the home of one of Australia’s most prolific public artists. Although you might not have heard his name before, David Humphries is a bit of a living legend! Entering his home is like stumbling into Aladdin’s cave glittering with crystals, or taking the lens cap off a telescope to reveal a star-studded night sky.
‘I like that passers by have no inkling as to what’s behind my door, unless they are invited in,’ David remarks. He shares the Sydney home he has been living in for over 25 years with his partner Masou Nodoust.
David’s truly epic career was most prolific through the ’80s and ’90s, where his distinct terrazzo designs sprawled across the floors of cathedrals, memorials, shopping centres, retail complexes and casinos. His company, Public Art Squad, made large-scale public art pieces for institutions like the National Maritime Museum and Olympic Walk, as well as the entrance hall floor of the Fashion and Textile Museum in London. David even crafted the terrazzo installation at Melbourne’s Bourke Street Mall tramway zone!
After returning from New York – where he had lived in many loft-style studios in the ‘70s – David had his antennas up for his own warehouse. ‘I found this one by accident on Christmas Eve in 1995, and pounced on it immediately,’ he recalls. At the time, it was an industrial space, an ex-storage facility for an events management company. Despite the international acclaim his work garnered, David’s piece-de-resistance is the 9x15m concrete slab floor in his own home, atop which sits a 40cm-deep terrazzo artwork. Marble eyes, glittering stars, and fluid, iridescent orbs float across surface, resembling a sea-floor filled with creatures, coral and hidden treasure.
‘The interiors of this warehouse are a chatter of energy, vibrating creativity to the household like a tree full of cicadas,’ David says. Each room in the 400square metre space points towards the indoor garden, and sports its own type of terrazzo to match its personality. The bathroom floor is inky and black, studded with crystalline stars and wiggly supernovas; while the art-filled gallery walkway is a vibrant, multicoloured checkerboard.
Beyond the terrazzo, this loft residence boasts 12m high walls, polished concrete floors, a library, a media den, a custom built koi (fish!) pond, an exuberant art collection, a second indoor courtyard and a marble sheathed bathroom. The old loading dock is now a flexible studio space where David creates paintings, mosaics and terrazzo pieces, while also doubling as a gallery and photo shoot location.
‘The design of the space is simple and fluid, it’s easily adaptable and can be changed to fit the needs and uses of a variety of projects,’ says David of his multifunctional home. ‘Most of the furniture is on wheels, and plants are in pots so they can easily be moved. The view from above is great for designing floor works, photo shoots or watching parties in the studio below.’ The soft and ever-changing light is perfect for making art, and a lot of work has gone into making the house eco-friendly, with a full roof of solar panels, a worm farm and double brick wall for insulation!
Ceiling-to-floor cedar and glass sliding doors partition the mezzanine space from the studio void, which David calls his ‘secret garden of exotica’. The garden is a living organism, where ‘gentle air currents and ions from the pond cross-ventilate the space and create an energy that nurtures plants, our life and creativity,’ David explains poetically.
Though Public Art Squad is still in operation under Masou’s direction, these days David has taken a step back from crafting terrazzo pieces himself. ‘We keep within our capabilities, but I’m not up to the physical yakka of the good old days. I am no longer Peter Pan.’
We are truly blown away discovering David’s work and home, and hope you feel the magic, too!
Our Art Director Annie Portelli made this little video tour, just incase you were wanting more! Enjoy
