Who says science isn't exciting?
4x04 Dear Mama
Hi, and welcome back to my science meta! I'm actually writing this merely a few hours after watching the finale, and I haven't gotten a chance to rewatch any of season 4. So this might get updated in the future as I intend to rewatch the entire show to give you the best science breakdown possible!
Anyway, this is not about the finale, it's about 4x04 and science. Hence I will ignore all my feelings about this episode, and focus on my favourite thing in the world: science!
So buckle your seat-belts, deconnect all your braincells, and prepare yourself to dive into some alien made-up science!
(Content warning for this meta, I talk about squids a lot, because as you can see from my username, I like that animal)
We start up with a dialogue between Isobel and Liz:
Isobel: "All right, uh, Dr. Dyson, why don't you tell me about this, uh, alien ectoplasm, hmm?"
Liz: "Oh, I prefer the term "goo," but it's technically epidermal tissue. Mm-hmm."
The ectoplasm is the outer layer of a cell's cytoplasm. The ectoplasm is usually of an elastic texture.
The cytoplasm is the all of the material in an eukaryotic cell, enclosed by the cell membrane, excluding the cell nucleus.
Euraryotic cells are cells whose nucleus is enclosed by a nuclear envelope.
The cell nucleus is what contains all of the cell's genome (all genetic information of an organism).
So, the thing is, what we see on screen looks like skin that has been shed. Which is not what ectoplasm is. And I really don't know why Isobel would mention that. I guess one could theorise that after spending many hours around people (Liz and Kyle) who talk about biology, one would absorb some of that vocabulary.
However, Liz indeed corrects her, by saying something scientifically correct! Skin is indeed epidermal tissue.
Epidermal tissue is the outmost cell layer of the primary plant body. So, really, humans are plants and therefore the outer layer of skin, since our skin is composed of 3 layers, one of which is called the epidermis (corresponding to the outer layer), which is an other word for epidermal tissue.
I know this is a weird thing to be proud of, but the fact that they used correct terms (as far as I know) is pretty cool. Just afterwards, Liz mentions the third helix and hence it is definitely alien. Which, personally, I didn't need to look at it under a microscope to tell. The skin sample glowed. Human skin, as far as I know, doesn't do that.
But, better be safe than sorry. It's always good to check your results, and give background to the results that were obtained.
***
The next science is something that kinda confused me at first, and then seemed to make some sense. Liz seems to be walking around the desert with a metal detector (spectrometer). And she says:
"Yeah. I rigged it so that it would locate the alien tech component in alien biology. I mean, at least I hope I did."
A spectrometer is a scientific instrument used to separate and measure spectral (over a spectrum) components of a physical phenomenon.
There are light spectrometers, that can separate white light (visible light) and measure the individual bands of colour that compose the light (called a spectrum). There are mass spectrometers which measure the different masses of the atoms or molecules in a gas.
There are other types of spectrometers, like a magnetic one, which is what I had initially assumes Liz had used, but turns out a magnetic spectrometer requires very specific conditions.
Then, I decided to look further into mass spectrometer. It appears that it would work on solids rather than just on gasses. We then can conclude that Liz probably used a mass spectrometer, and tweaked it so that it would "detect" the change in mass between alien DNA (which contains a third helix, which I'm guessing must affect it's mass), from the rest of the desert.
Well, she does find an odd change in mass, in, you know, a truck buried under sand. Very normal, of course.
***
Liz saying "For the first time in forever, the science doesn't make any sense to me." really really describes my constant state watching that show
***
Liz and Kyle science!
Liz: "Kyle. What if the alien cells aren't dead? What if they are only playing dead? Like an octopus does when it-it's scared and it turns into coral."
Kyle: "You're talking chromatophores."
Octopuses (I had to google the plural of octopus, and I'm just going with what google answered) wan indeed turn into coral! It's fascinating to see (here's a youtube video for you). Squids can also change their colour (which I can actually talk about a lot, I have done extensive research on squids 😅😂).
Squids and octopuses have cells called chromatophores that have the particularity of changing colour. These cells are situated just below the the surface of the skin, which is thin enough to show the colour of these cells.
Chromatophores basically work by having a center that is elastic and contains a certain colour. The elasticity means that when it stretches out, the coulour would appear brighter, and hence give the illusion of changing colour (since then the colours seems more visible). This elastic center, like a little pouch, is controlled by nerves and muscles. These cells are found in a large number, in varying sizes. Hence, it can create a full camouflage. Thing of it like pointillism, a painting made of thousands of little dots of different colour.
To go back to the alien science, basically the alien cells taken from the skin sample have the same property than squids and octopuses. I guess you could say, that I, squid kid, am an alien. (Sorry, I had to, I have been saving this from the moment I watched the episode. It is my moment to shine).
By introducing the sample from the blue eyes, it is like saying "hey don't be afraid, I'm a friend", and the squid/octopus basically reverts to their "original form".
(Moral of the story: don't scare me. I'll turn into coral 😂)
(Side note, but this is one of the reasons thesquidkid is my url)
***
I could talk about Tezca and Jones' body. But I genuinely have no idea what is going on, and I don't even want to know. However, I am always happy to talk theories and ideas!
***
This is the end of the meta for this episode! It took me most of the day ngl. I was writing in during the breaks in my lectures, because I was so excited to finally talk about how cool squids are 😂
I don't really know when I'll upload the next one, but I'll keep doing them episode by episode, instead of all in one post. I did that for the first three seasons and that was not a great idea for my sanity. You have no idea how stressful it is to write a full meta all on tumblr drafts. I was so scared it would crash and I'd lose everything. I guess I like to live dangerously 😂

This might end up being a little disappointing because I really don’t have much to say (future rin edit: and what I do say is pretty bitter). I was just bored and waiting for Alex or any mention of him, but I can remark on a few other things. Without further ado, here are my thoughts on 4x04:
Mildly surprised Mimi was killed off, but not really because she never really played any kind of role. Couldn’t care less about Maria, and aside from that beginning scene, I skipped everything else she was in.
Glad Anatsa finally left. They could’ve had Isobel with Cam if they really wanted a sapphic relationship, she has a lot more chemistry with her, in my opinion, but I just want her with Kyle already, to be honest.
I’m bummed Bonnie and Clyde aren’t a romantic relationship, I really liked the idea of Clyde being this angry guy and only softening around Bonnie, it was pretty cute. I don’t get how or why the writers didn’t go with that, but whatever.
I didn’t really mind the kiss because it gave us Michael calling Alex his boyfriend and that “I’m kinda completely in love with him” line, which is the only real saving grace of the episode and will forever have a piece of my heart. I do wish that Bonnie hadn’t actually gotten to kiss him, that she’d tried but before she’d gotten close enough, Michael had pushed her back, but that’s really more of a nitpick.
I’m going to write a fic on this, but I wish the show would show Michael missing Alex when he’s away. I was disappointed nobody noticed he was gone yet, and I realize that this is his work and they have no reason to assume anything bad happened yet (if they don’t realize it by next episode though, that would really be pushing it), but Alex and Michael love each other, and Alex isn’t responding to Michael’s texts or calls. Can’t we just get a scene of Michael grumbling as he scrolls through his texts and someone teasing him about missing Alex? Just a line or something?
The one thing that really did annoy me in this episode is that we finally get to see Michael calling Alex after he’d left, and it was because Maria needs him. Yeah, well, Alex needed Michael, and Maria didn’t seem to mind taking him away.
Look, call it petty, call it bitter, but we just came off a season where mostly everyone’s attention centered around Maria. I’m fucking sick of her. The writers really need to stop trying to shove her down our throats, like the more we get of her and everyone loving and praising her, the more we’ll start to care about her. You’ve shattered her beyond repair, I don’t give a crap what happens to her, and I sure as hell don’t sympathize with her either. Stop having Michael outwardly care about her so much when we don’t even get to see him fucking miss his own boyfriend. I know it’s her mom and all, but this is what happens when you make a character so detestable, then center a season around her, constantly try to force her into the narrative, and then give her a tragedy; I don’t care about her, I’m emotionally incapable after everything she’s done.
For the most part though, I was just bored. With the exception of Kyle and Michael’s scenes, I was ready to skip the entire episode. The only reason I didn’t was because I worried someone would mention Alex. Don’t worry though, because aside from a moment with Michael, and in keeping with this show’s traditions, Alex Manes was thoroughly ignored.

Thoughts on RNM 04x04 Dear Mama
Michael deserts Maria: Mimi died (sad) and everyone showed up to be supportive. Maria refused to be helped. Michael walks out of the bar and announces "it's the Deluca Saves Herself special in there," and switches immediately into alien business. I don't hate Maria, but I get really tired of the martyr stuff. I agree with Michael: if your friend who clearly needs love and support refuses all the love and support offered, it's fine to walk away and do something else.
Michael finds out stuff from Bonnie and Clyde: I thought the alien info in this episode was great. We're finding out what that symbol means, and telling Michael that his mom built that artifact was an awesome hint. I'm dying to know more, especially if it can take them home. Also, I LOVED the glimpse of Oasis that Clyde gave Michael.
What's the point of a triad? Something significant about alien triads, etc. Bonnie sounds like Clyde recruited her into a cult (they're following a guy they call the Savior, telling her what she wanted to hear until she was on board, music is banned because it corrupts your mind). If a triad is supposed to be something you can rely on, the Bonnie-Clyde-Tezca triad isn't that great.
Bonnie: I like Bonnie. I like her beginning to trust Michael and I hope it isn't too much of a shock to her when she finds out Michael wanted info from them. Michael wants to help Bonnie too. She was very apologetic about kissing Michael once Michael said he had a boyfriend, and I hope she's instrumental in getting Alex out of the sand.
Best line: Max telling Liz, "You are my turquoise."
Truck Mystery: Why bury the big truck? Did Renata do something significant and I missed it?
Anatsa and Isobel: Anatsa was just in the show to cause angst on the way to get Kyle and Isobel together. Sigh. The way they handled the breakup was bad writing. Isobel has been acting weird for one week, and then offers to tell Anatsa the truth. Anatsa, the curious reporter, doesn't want to hear it. AFTER ONE WEEK? I dunno, one week of drama doesn't seem all that bad to me. Anyway. I guess Kyle and Isobel can get together now.
Awesome two-episode trend that should continue: Liz is back in the lab doing science. Let's keep her there rather than sending her back to teach GED classes with whiney Vanessa.
Things I don't get yet: Is Shevani going to help or hurt the aliens? I like her growing connection with Liz. The conversation about how Mimi's death affected Liz was a warm hug in dialogue. But I'm suspicious of tech billionaires who want to know more about alien tech.
Drama Award goes to: Nope, not Maria for deciding to handle her mother's death without any help. Michael gets it! For lighting his hand on fire and announcing that he's the Savior's son. Epic, Michael, really, five gold stars to you.
Most hopeful moment: Dallas experimenting with his powers and having a split second vision/memory about his father. I am hopeful that Dallas will get a storyline that is more than just being everyone else's support person.
Funkiest New Alien Ability: Tezca is a shapeshifter! I did not see that one coming. Now we have a mystery about who is in the pod that Kyle found. Does Tezca have a clone? Or is the real Tezca in the pod and the shapeshifter isn't Tezca at all, and so is fooling Bonnie and Clyde too? Also, she can't shapeshift away the tattoo on her wrist? Because that's giving her away all the time.
Costuming award: Michael is in ANOTHER new shirt! Is he raiding Alex's closet?
Fruit on the menu: Michael's reaction to eating Oasian fruit was priceless. "It tastes like every emotion I've ever had." The Oasians must have some nutritional deficiency living on earth, or they wouldn't have to drink acetone so much. I want to use this idea in a fic, but I don't have a plot.
Weird photo: Maria goes through her mother's wedding photos. First off - didn't Maria say that it's always just been her and her mom? Anyway. I'm assuming the groom isn't Maria's dad. Why did the groom have his face hidden in the wedding photo? Now I'm suspicious that the groom's identity is going to be significant. Then Maria finds the sketch of the Oasian tree in her mother's wedding album. The plot thickens.
Funky Alien Science: the Resurrection thing. Jones looked like he was still dead, though, so whatever? Or does Tezca need Max's blood to resurrect Jones and that's why she went to all that trouble to get Max in the same place as Jones' body?
Where is Rosa??
Looking on the bright side: Alex has been gone for two episodes. He has to appear in 10 episodes, so we'll get the non-Alex portion of the season over with fast and then Alex can be in every episode til the end of the season! I'm manifesting.

A continuation of my AU where Michael got adopted by the Evans’ instead of Max.
Based on RNM 4x04. Dealing with the fallout of Mimi dying and Jones' body being stolen leads different teams to investigate. Alex finally departs and Michael and Dallas have an enlightening conversation before a mysterious phone call.
Differences from Canon: - Since Alex is still around, he, Liz and Isobel support Maria. Iz doesn’t need to make the coffee run and doesn’t run into Anatsa. Dallas also doesn’t need to be around so much. - Alex helps Maria look through Mimi’s stuff and they find the drawing of the tree, which doesn’t seem significant. - Clyde doesn’t want to mess with Tezca’s plan so yanks Bonnie away from Michael and doesn’t trust him or bring him anywhere. - Liz and Michael have the same discovery, but their conversation before is different. - Iz thinks about Alex's advice from Hatch Day and doubts her relationship. Since Isobel doesn’t have the encouragement to come clean with her gf, she immediately goes with Kyle to Mexico. - Alex finally leaves but says he’ll use the console frequency to come home soon. Max says a line that canon Michael said in 4x05 and Alex says lines he said in canon 4x12. - Michael, who isn’t working undercover, talks with Dallas (lines inspired by 4x05) and offers game-changing insight about his memories. - Since Michael’s signal is not out in the desert, Cam has no reason to be out there searching, so the only body connected to Michael that Tezca has access to is Eduardo. She needs to call him to lure him out to the desert.

sometimes, I wish someone out there will find me
Alex is still in a hole, and Michael doesn't know what is going on. Oh, and Tezca can shapeshift. Angst with an eventual happy ending. Enjoy! (also on AO3)
Chapter 1 - and I'm the only one and I walk alone
“Hello, you’ve reached Alex Manes. Please leave a message, and I’ll call you back.”
The loud beep was starting to haunt Michael. Because each time he called Alex, it was higher-pitched. Each time he heard it, his heart sank deeper into his chest, his throat tightened, his knees became weak. And each time, he took a deep breath, and told himself that there was a very logical reason for Alex not picking up. That he was in the middle desert, with no cell service, busy chasing weather balloons.
Every time Michael called Alex, he left the same message.
“Hi Alex, it’s me. Michael. Just checking in on you. Call me back when you get this, so I know you’re okay –” And after a beat, his voice lowering until it was nothing more than a whisper, “I love you.”
After that, he hung up, and tried to get on with his day. Alex was safe, he reasoned, the Dark Triad was in Roswell, where Alex most definitely wasn’t. Alex was a trained soldier; if anything came his way he would no doubt be able to defend himself.
But none of that stopped Michael from worrying.
The only time Michael left Alex a different kind of message was about Mimi DeLuca.
He had received the news from Dallas, who had taken upon himself to alert everyone, leaving Maria with her grief.
Michael had been sitting on Alex’s couch – their couch – with his feet propped up on the table, watching a documentary on emperor penguins in Antarctica. His eyes were fixed on the penguins sliding down on their bellies, but his mind was elsewhere. His left hand was holding on to the alien glass on his necklace, a desperate attempt to feel close to Alex.
He drove as fast as he could, heading straight to the Wild Pony, and only calling Alex once he reached the parking lot, rather than getting in a car accident. Once again, he listened to Alex’s answering machine, and the beep that resonated in his head and his heart, before talking.
“Alex, it’s Michael again. I know you’re busy, but something happened to Mimi. She’s –” his voice broke, but he took a deep breath and continued, knowing that he was on a time limit. He stood in front of the door to the bar.
“She’s dead, Alex.”
He was quiet for a short second, as if he was taking the news in himself. Another deep breath. His hand moved the door, slowly opening it.
“I know you’re busy with your balloons. But Maria is devastated right now –” He felt ridiculous saying it like that. Devastated was an understatement; the pain that came with losing a mother was much sharper.
He walked into the bar, his heart sinking as he saw Maria at the bar. “When you get this message, call me when you can. She’s gonna need you Alex.”
He hung up, and made his way to Maria. The beep that came with Alex’s answering machine was still haunting him; but at that moment he needed to be there for Maria. Besides, he reasoned once again, Mimi had been like a mother to Alex. Surely he would leave everything once he heard.
—
Michael didn’t get the chance to leave another message to Alex. He went undercover with Bonnie and Clyde, and his phone got smashed. He wasn’t necessarily attached to that thing, but it did mean that he no longer had a way to reach Alex.
Or a way for Alex to reach him.
But in that moment, it didn’t really matter. He had a cover to keep, and secrets to unravel.
Spending an entire day with Bonnie and Clyde did allow Michael to discover more about where he came from. He ate an oasian fruit – which was truly the most delicious thing he had ever eaten – and saw an oasian salamander and an oasian tree.
He even got a glimpse of the very thing he had always dreamt of: a way home. And built by his mother nonetheless.
He still doubted the veracity of that last part. Bonnie did tell him that Clyde told what others wanted to hear, but considering that Nora built a way to reach aliens, it wasn’t such a far stretch to imagine that she had built a way home.
Michael was deep in his thoughts, sitting against the wall to the barn. He thought of ways he could get Max to give him the missing piece, of ways he could get Bonnie out of Clyde and the third alien’s influence, of ways his life-long dream might be fulfilled.
Just as he thought of home, the alien glass resting on his chest started to get warm, to the point that he felt his chest burn, but it wasn’t painful – not yet. He closed his eyes and brought his hand to it, at first feeling the comforting warmth of home, of Alex.
But just as fast as it got warm, it got cold. It felt like Michael’s lungs had filled with ice, and he gasped for air, struggling to breathe. Where before he had felt comfort, he now felt pain and torment. His knuckles became white as he clutched the alien glass, like he was holding on to something – to Alex.
And equally as fast, the cold disappeared, leaving Michael with a feeling of emptiness.
“Are you okay?” asked Bonnie, standing in front of Michael.
He opened his eyes and blinked back a few tears. His hand was still holding the alien glass, but there was nothing coming out of it; no emotions or feelings that could explain what had just happened.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” he said, clearing his throat, but whether it was to convince her or himself, he wasn’t sure.
She sat down next to him, with her usual bright smile, which he tried to return. She bumped their shoulders together, probably a human custom she had picked on.
“Can you tell me about him?” she asked, turning her head to Michael, who raised his eyebrows in question. “Your boyfriend?”
There was an air of innocence about Bonnie, which is what made Michael think of himself when he first saw her. She reminded him of what he could’ve been if he had a better childhood. One where the adults protected him from the horrors of the world, instead of making him witness them first handedly.
“Sure,” he replied with a smile, the warmth in his chest coming back, but this time not due to the necklace. It was the usual warmth that was present every time he thought of Alex, of what they were building together.
And so he talked. He shared things that he hadn’t told many people – if anyone – about. His fears, but also his hopes and his dreams. He didn’t tell her everything, wanting some things to just stay between him and Alex. But he told her about stealing the guitare from the music room, about kissing Alex in the museum. About kissing Alex again, this time much older, but still kids at heart, in front of the Wild Pony.
He didn’t share the bad and the ugly. Not wanting to think about them, preferring the happy memories.
All while he talked, Bonnie kept smiling softly, making comments and asking questions here and there.
And she talked too. About life on Oasis, about some traditions they had that still survived the reign of the Dictator. She answered Michael’s questions about where they came from, and he answered hers about where they were currently.
—
“We need to tell Michael.”
Isobel repeated for the fifth time. They were all gathered at the Crashdown, around the counter, thinking about the latest discoveries.
Kyle was on FaceTime, appearing on Liz’s phone that was propped up against the paper towels dispenser. Dallas was sitting on a stool, drinking a little green man milkshake. Liz was behind the counter, her head in her hands.
Isobel was next to Dallas, playing with one of the paper towels to occupy her fingers. Jenna was laying on a booth, looking at the ceiling, muttering under breath about bringing a gun to an alien fight.
They were missing five crucial members of their scooby gang.
Maria was still at the Pony, grieving her mother. She had told Liz that she would be fine on her own, and that they all should do the meeting without her. So at least they knew she was alive.
Similarly, Liz had texted Rosa who was still at art school, and who simply responded with “good luck with the latest alien shenanigans”. So she too was alive.
The same couldn’t be said about the other three.
No one had any news about Alex, and even considering he was chasing water balloons in the middle of the desert, where there was potentially no cell service, they were still getting worried. Alex owned satellite phones. He should be able to reach someone, anyone, from where he was.
The last they had heard from Max was when he had called Cam to warn her about Ramos. Once again, considering what they knew about the shapeshifting abilities of the third alien, and that Cam now had blue eyes, the conclusion was pretty obvious to make. The third alien had Max.
Along with Jones’ body.
The last one they had no recent news about was Michael. Cam had said that it was likely that Clyde had destroyed Michael’s phone, to stop him from having any contact with anyone, but that didn’t reassure anybody.
“And how do you plan on doing that exactly?” Dallas asked Isobel, for the fifth time already, to which Isobel threw her arms in the air with a huff.
“I don’t know!” she said, “But we need to reach him. He probably doesn’t know about the shapeshifting alien, and who knows what he’s heading into!”
“Mikey is a literal genius, guys,” said Liz with a sigh, “I’m sure he’ll be fine. I’m more worried about Max now.”
“Especially since Jones’ body is gone,” continued Kyle. “Can’t we just get one rest day,” he groaned, talking to no one but the universe itself.
“Well,” Isobel continued, “we need to do something. We can’t just stand there, while our friends, our brothers –” she looked at Dallas, “are being held hostage.”
Little did they know, their brothers weren’t exactly being held hostage. Tezca had used Max for his blood, with the end goal of reviving Jones. She knocked him out and drove him out to a particular point in the desert, where she sliced his arm to drain blood, before letting the sand swallow him.
And Michael, well, he was talking to someone who was rapidly becoming a friend, about his past and his present. They talked about his home planet, but whether that meant Oasis or Earth was yet to be determined.
—
Miles away from both the Crashdown and the barn in the middle of the desert, a hole was forming itself in the middle of quicksand. The hole grew bigger and bigger until it spat out a man, before reforming itself, the sand hardening like any other sand in the desert.
That man was laying on the ground, taking deep breaths. He sat up slowly and brushed the sand off of his leather jacket, before standing up. He first set his left foot on the ground, and used it to push himself up.
With one last look to the ground, where the hole in the sand had appeared, he walked away.
Michael had fallen asleep. As he opened his eyes, he was alone in the barn, a deafening silence around him. He turned his head, trying to catch a glimpse of Bonnie or Clyde, but there was no one.
He brought his hand to his necklace, remembering when it had burnt then iced him. The feeling of emptiness, of loneliness, wasn’t gone, far from it.
Michael couldn’t shake the feeling that something bad was happening. And that it concerned Alex.
He got up and walked around the barn, looking for something to eat. He found some snicker’s bars and various other snacks – brought by Bonnie no doubt. He ate them in silence, listening carefully in case Bonnie or Clyde, or even the third alien, came back.
But nothing. He was alone, and he was feeling it deep in his bones. He briefly considered walking out in the desert, but that might ruin his cover. So he stayed put, despite the feeling of dread that was slowly creeping up.
The dread built up, until a cold sweat ran down his back, until goosebumps appeared on his arms, until it felt like the temperature had gone below 50°F.
He furtively turned on himself, trying to find the cause of the fear building up in him. But nothing. He was alone, in an empty and silent barn.
That is until a shadow appeared under the door. Michael froze in place as he waited for the other person to open it.
Time seemed frozen too, and the deafening silence seemed broken by the repeated thump of Michael’s heartbeat.
The door opened, and for a brief moment, all Michael felt was relief.
For his love has come to rescue him.
