Ah, tell ya what, I'll spill another think I had about Risk of Rain's story. Note that I am less familiar with RoR1/R's story than RoR2 (the Void especially consumed my interest for a while, haha!), so corrections or critique is encouraged!

So you know how Providence's main goal was to protect living creatures via his sanctuary on Petrichor V? "Bulwark of the Weak", they call him - a defense or safeguard for the creatures on the planet. That protection came with a caveat however; Providence would strike down those who threatened Petrichor V's creatures with great force and remain an enigmatic figure to even his followers. He acted as something of a benevolent tyrant with absolute power.

It's strongly implied that he was killed by RoR1/R's Commando given a lot of the logbooks come from the perspective of someone with pistols & a knife (weapons 'mando happens to wield). Commando himself is said to have been brought to the Contact Light for the purpose of extra security and was a well-regarded individual, being allowed to stretch his legs in the cargo bay due to previous good history with UES.

Providence is the one to tear the Contact Light down from the sky and give the Lone Survivor his namesake. To survive, he had to turn to monstrous means and attain power on-par with Providence himself to survive and make it back home. This involved a great massacre of many creatures on Petrichor V, returning Providence's favour of destroying Contact Light in blood.

The Lone Survivor (or Commando) is a protector that was forced to rise to the same level of unstoppable, arguably disasterous power Providence has by doing what the demigod did to him; murder the people that he wanted to keep safe. In a sense, Providence stared down the power and violence he wielded from the outside, a force that he inadvertantly created through his divine intervention. His own actions he committed to because he felt there was no other way.

Providence saw a monster in that person. So did the Lone Survivor within himself when all was said and done, leaving "with everything but his humanity".

Providence and our protagonist parallel each other in their roles in their respective worlds, the strength they needed to meet their ends, and the vile actions committed in the name of their respective objectives. Both characters regret their actions to varying degrees while feeling they had no choice in doing them.

A key difference is that Providence seems to have been born with his god-like power. The Lone Survivor - with no one to protect but himself - was forced to acquire and use it in grisly ways. Providence could and did stop his own Contact Light event from happening, while the Survivor could only pick up the pieces and salvage what he could.

How ironic that Providence would meet his end by a protector who felt he had no choice but to use his power to kill other sentient life.

Someone made that way by what Providence felt he needed to do with his own power.

Commando in Risk of Rain Returns really is the most balanced character Hopoo has designed.

I love that he has kits for defensive and aggressive playstyles with neither overshadowing the other.

I love that his walk cycle and primary attack syncs up so well with the Monsoon soundtrack (the only reason I prefer getting Desolate Forest over Dried Lake as a starting map).

I love that his balanced design goes hand-in-hand with the vibes of RoRR's story; the sheer hostility of the planet driving you to attain more terrible power while rarely being at a total advantage.

It also helps that he's the (implied) author of a good number of logs in the game. He out of all the characters is the one we're most familiar with on a personal level, which makes playing him all the more investing.

Everything about him is fine-tuned to give you the most honest experience of Risk of Rain. He just FITS. For a bog-standard pick he's very captivating to play for how well it all comes together in both gameplay and narrative. I appreciate that!
