Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4090 Ultimate graphics card is everything but modest. It’s a huge giant lump of a pixel pusher, and while some more curves have been added to what may otherwise appear like a respin of the RTX 3090 shroud, it retains the novelty Ultimate graphics card style.
It appears to be a semi-satirical plastic replica created to mock GPU manufacturers for the ever-increasing size of their cards. But this is no model or moon; it is the forerunner for the whole RTX 40-series GPU generation, as well as our first taste of the revolutionary Ada Lovelace architecture.

If you’re looking for pure value for performance, the Nvidia RTX 4070 Ti is easily the greatest GPU you can purchase right now. You get most of the greatest features of Nvidia’s flagship GPUs of this generation without the excessive price tag thanks to third-generation ray tracing cores, fourth-generation tensor cores, and superior Nvidia Lovelace architecture.
Nvidia is quick to stress out how much quicker the RTX 40-series is with DLSS 3. As previously stated, produced frames are not the same as “real” frames, and therefore increase input latency. It’s not that DLSS 3 is poor; rather, we prefer to compare non-enhanced performance, and in terms of feel, we’d say DLSS 3 enhances the experience over the baseline by 10-20%, rather than the 60-100% seen in Nvidia’s performance charts.

It’s around 15% slower overall, and somewhat slower than the RTX 3060 (in non-RT games), but it’s still 30% quicker than the RTX 3050 in our tests. Prices have creeped back up to $225 right now, however we’ve seen it go for just over $200 in the last several months, so perhaps price will go again.

The RX 6600 competes in the midrange Ultimate Graphics Card market against both the RTX 3050 and earlier generation RTX 20-series and GTX 16-series GPUs. In our tests, it delivered near-RTX 2070 performance, at least in non-ray tracing settings. When ray tracing is enabled, it suffers horribly, barely achieving 30 frames per second in our DXR test suite at 1080p medium and lagging Nvidia’s RTX 2060 by 20%.
If you’re not concerned with ray tracing, the RX 6600 is well worth considering. AMD’s Infinity Cache saves what appears to be a fairly anemic GPU, and the card only requires roughly 130W, significantly less than comparable GPUs. As the cost of cards from earlier generations continues to grow, we are left searching for the best alternatives. AMD’s new RX 7900 XT(opens in new tab) performs better in rasterization than the RTX 4070 Ti(opens in new tab) (above), but falls short in ray tracing games; fortunately, the extra $100 in MSRP has now almost disappeared. In addition to receiving all of the most recent AMD RDNA 3 architectural changes, AMD also offers cost parity.
AMD also doesn’t scrimp on VRAM, offering 20GB. This is 67% more than the rival 4070 Ti. Another possible benefit is that, unlike its larger sister, the reference 7900 XT cards did not have any vapor chamber cooling issues, so you may pick one of them up without fear of an RMA wait.
You won’t receive DLSS support, and while AI tasks may be handled on AMD GPUs, performance can be noticeably worse at times. Because RDNA 3’s “AI Accelerators” employ the same execution pipelines as the GPU shaders, FP16 or INT8 performance is only twice that of FP32. That’s more than adequate for AI inference, but in terms of pure AI number crunching, it only equals a modest GPU like the RTX 3060.

But what else are you planning to purchase? Prices for the RX 6950 XT, 6900 XT, and 6800 XT are wildly changing, and supplies may run out shortly. If you’re going to spend $500 or more, we’d rather pay a little more for the newest generation hardware than get anything that’s more than two years old.
How Do We Evaluate the Best Ultimate Graphics Card?
To determine pure graphics card performance, remove all additional bottlenecks as much as feasible. The 2023 graphics card testbed includes a Core i9-12900K CPU, MSI Z690 DDR4 motherboard, 32GB Corsair DDR4-3600 CL16 memory, and a Crucial P5 Plus 2TB SSD, as well as a Cooler Master PSU, chassis, and CPU cooler. We use the same testing technique for each graphics card. After running the game, we perform one pass of each benchmark to “warm up” the GPU, then at least two passes at each setting/resolution combination. If the two runs are almost identical (within 0.5% of one another), we use the quicker of the two. If there is a significant disparity, we repeat the test at least twice more to assess what “normal” performance should be.
We also examine all of the data and search for abnormalities, so the RTX 3070 Ti, 3070, and 3060 Ti will all perform within a limited range – 3070 Ti is roughly 5% faster than 3070, which is about 5% faster than 3060 Ti. If we observe games with apparent outliers (i.e. performance is more than 10% higher for the cards just indicated), we’ll retest whichever cards are exhibiting the anomaly to determine what the “correct” outcome would be.
Due to the amount of time necessary to evaluate each GPU, updated drivers and game updates that might impair performance are unavoidable. We retest a few sample cards on a regular basis to ensure that our findings are still valid, and if they are not, we go through and retest the impacted game(s) and GPU(s). Consider the following before purchasing a Ultimate Graphics Card.
• Resolution: The more pixels you push, the more performance you will require. To game in 1080p (opens in new tab), you don’t need a high-end GPU.

• Ray Tracing, DLSS, and FSR: Ray tracing is supported by the newest Ultimate Graphics Card and may be utilized to improve visuals. DLSS offers intelligent upscaling and anti-aliasing to improve speed while maintaining picture quality, however it is only available on Nvidia RTX GPUs. AMD’s FSR works on almost any GPU and also supports upscaling and improvement, but only on a handful of games.
