can’t shake the idea of amanda making the kids spend a harvest season on uncle trip’s and aunt t’pol’s pear farm in washington. this is basically a “the simple life” au where sybok forms a cult of personality, michael frees all the frogs from a local high school, and spock gets a crush. classic boy meets world stuff. imagine being average federation citizen doing a wikipedia dive on Amanda Grayson for like a book report or whatever and you click on “spouse” and it links you to a guy who was thee vulcan ambassador to earth for like 200 years and publicly called the klingon ambassador a murderer once and you think huh neat and click on “children” and the first person listed is described as “career criminal, activist and religious evangelist” with a rap sheet as long as your arm ending with him taking the entire government hostage in nimbus iii and then no death date he's just listed as “missing” and the second kid is a starfleet science hero you've seen on the poster of like 7 different documentaries on space netflix and you notice his year of death is listed as 2285 but “years active” goes on like 100 years past that and also he's apparently the reason earth isn't completely underwater right now? then you read his sister's article and it's all “starfleet's first mutineer” “blamed for starting the first federation-klingon war” “lauded for ending the first federation-klingon war” but is weirdly vague on what happened to her after that and the article is edit locked and her year of death has like 6 annotations attached to it

This is something I believe probably happened on the Entiprise at some point.
It was a quiet day (a terrifying concept to everyone in Starfleet) and Chekov is bored so he decides to go around the crew and jokingly ask them if they are the favourite child.
He jokingly goes up to Spock because everyone knows he's an only child and asks him if he's his father's favourite child
Deadpan Spock responds with a firm no.
Years later a confused crew becomes even more confused when they meet Sybok because how the hell is this Crazy emotional Vulcan Sarek's favourite child!
Sybok is amused by this and keeps up the ruse. In memory of his favourite family member.

!!!!TW: FLASHING LIGHTS!!!!
Rewatches continue with Star Trek V. Idc about the drama. It’s not 1989 anymore. The franchise has expanded and this one isn’t as bad as you remember. It’s another palate cleanser. It’s still the right amount of silliness that can only be found in Star Trek. It’s another banger with cinematography. It’s old man core. What did you expect from a “philosophical” 50 year old man who is coming to terms with the fact that his life is half over? Also, this was in the height of TV evangelists, so this 100% tracks.
The only grievance is Scotty/Uhura. Bc only Shatner would be so out of touch to write something as random as that

everybody shits on sarek for his mistakes but consider: there's just as much evidence for amanda messing up parenting-wise and yet she doesn't get bashed 9 out of every 10 posts. in disco michael canonically broke baby spock's heart and crushed his humanity but everybody forgives her because we understand she really did want to protect him and she loved him. in TOS Bones said the most racist shit to spock repeatedly and on purpose and people forgive him for the emotional hurt he regularly inflicts on spock because we know that he actually cares + he grows as a person. Jim calls Spock a "half-breed" TWICE to get out of a jam and is regularly pretty hurtful as well but we know how much they love each other so it's all forgotten. Sybok tries to brainwash Spock and shows him angsty visions of his deepest pain but people still headcanon him as a caring big bro despite Spock specifically stating he felt Sybok had abandoned him as a child (and I mean. Sybock was banished from Vulcan, not the Federation. he could have kept in touch).
methinks that of all the people who badly hurt spock over his lifetime, there's only one who gets systematically shat on while the others are always let off the hook - even though we have proof sarek loves spock just as deeply as the rest of them do.
so I'm going with the assumption that y'all are still working through your childhood trauma and haven't forgiven your fathers. and like, I'm genuinely sorry, but I have personally been lucky enough to have worked through the enormous baggage and rebuilt a relationship with mine, so I still think Sarek was doing his best and he fcked up but he wasn't a "bad guy" anymore than the others were 🖖

i hate MANY things about how angsty the s'chn t'gai family's canon is but i think my main issue with it is that it really makes a "jim meets spock's siblings" scenario impossible because of the timelines
(p.s. if you know any fics of jim meeting spock's siblings, send them my way pls)

Enough perfect mom Amanda Grayson. It’s time for middling mom Amanda Grayson who loved all her kids but was never close enough to any of them and is somewhat idealized in their heads because of it. Amanda Grayson who seems great in comparison to Sarek but is actually, when you look objectively at it, strangely absent: A mother who is always facing away from you, who you have to call but who always has a smile ready for when you do. Amanda Grayson who contrasts Sarek’s overbearing rules and expectations with an almost hands-off approach that felt like a refreshing reprieve at the time but as her children grow they realize was also hurtful in different respects. Amanda Grayson who loves her children almost as much as she loves her husband. A mother who listens when you complain about dad, who agrees and nods and pets your hair and says “I’m sorry, honey” but nothing ever comes of it and at a certain point you both know nothing’s ever going to come of it. Amanda Grayson who pretends she does not see it. Amanda Grayson who is too human for any of her children to let themselves love. And because she’s human maybe she resents them for it a little bit [do you think your mother knows you love her? Did you ever say it? Do you think she ever wanted you to? Do you remember when she held you and repeated it over and over again and told you she wouldn’t tell your dad if you said it just once and you answered her with silence?] And because she’s human she loves them anyway. She knows anyway. She can hear it even in the silence. /pos

The S’chn T’gai family at a ski resort on earth for the holidays
Amanda: *holding a holocam directed at Sarek with Spock standing in front of him with a snow covered mountain in the background* “Okay boys, say something nice for Great Aunt Winnie.”
Sarek and Spock: *both wearing thick parkas with their ears covered and only the bare minimum of their faces visible*
Spock: *giving a Vulcan salute* “Seasons greetings, Auntie Winnie. May the weather be fair with no chance of tropical storms. I wish you a most logical holiday. Peace and a good tan.”
Sarek: *giving a Vulcan salute* “Merry Christmas, Aunt Winnie. Live long and prosper. The S’chn T’gai family.”
Amanda: *still holding the holocam* “Sarek, she’s one hundred and eleven years old.”
Sarek: “In nine years she’ll be in her prime.”
Amanda: “She hates being reminded of her age and living lon-“
Michael: *in skis rushing fast in front of Amanda*
“I CAN’T SLOW DOWN!”
Sybok: *following just after*
“MICHAEL!”

Teenage Sybok, the red-eyed rebel, thinks he’s found a private spot within the S’chn T’gai compound. He sips at his catnip tea while watching his comparative religion lectures on his handheld vidscreen, all without knowing that his baby brother is looming in the shadows. A noise startles Sybok, the small hairs that cover his body standing on end, but then he sighs in relief. It’s just Spock, he thinks to himself. Little Spock walks closer, hands clutching at his robes and nose turned up. Sniffing. “What brings you here, Spock?” Spock doesn’t answer and hones in on the tea, his eyes widening until his pupils take over.
Amanda hears a crash and runs in to see Sybok scruffing Spock and quietly yelling. A shattered teacup was on the floor, and Spock furiously licked his glistening hands. When there was no more catnip tea to suck from his hands, Spock started growling and hissing, turning feral as he reached out to the tea-soaked carpet. It was not the scene Amanda expected and not the first time she struggled to maintain her composure when laughter wanted to bubble out of her.
Sarek, having come after being called through the family bond, was also conflicted. However, being the trained diplomat that he was, he knew the best course of action. “Since you are unable to keep young Spock away from this substance, you cannot be trusted to have it. You will give Amanda and I the rest of the substance immediately.”
Sybok knew he had lost the battle and passed a still-rampaging Spock to Amanda. “I apologize,” he said grudgingly as he took the large tin from the floor and handed it to his father.
“I implore you to make wiser choices in the future,” Sarek scolds. “After we have been assured that Spock is no longer under its influence, you will be minding him through tomorrow morning as punishment. You are dismissed.”
Later that evening, Sarek joins his wife in bed with two steaming cups of tea. Amanda recognizes the smell immediately and calls him out. “Isn’t this a bit hypocritical, dear?”
“I did not say he could not have catnip, I merely suggested that he make wiser choices.” Sarek hands one of the cups to Amanda, alerting her to the psilocybin contents. “Spock and Sybok are contained in their wing of the estate while we are safe to indulge without interference.”
Amanda laughs and taps her cup to her husband’s. “I knew I married you for a reason.”
“And I you.”

the Sarek family is hilarious to me because you have so much drama in one place. there have got to be at least 3 like, holo-documentaries or whatever about them. how could you not?
you have Sarek, the patriarch: one of the UFP's top diplomats, who knocks up a Vulcan princess then goes “hrm I am ambassador to Earth therefore I should marry a human” and he does, upsetting all sorts of the worst kinds of people on his home planet and causing racist hate groups to try to blow him and his family up multiple times, and seems honestly more put out by his son joining Starfleet than his other son becoming Vulcan Moriarty
Amanda, the matriarch: an accomplished educator and quite possibly the only well-adjusted member of the family, but when her son Spock shows up on her doorstep after growing a beard, having a mental breakdown and apparently murdering several medical staff she still shrugs and hides him in the family mausoleum
Sybok: Amanda's stepson from the aforementioned princess fling, who becomes an antiestablishment criminal mastermind with an edgelord fake name, hooks up with a hot space pirate, finds religion, starts a cult, takes an entire colonial government hostage sparking a diplomatic incident involving three galactic superpowers, and hijacks a Starfleet ship to the galactic core to find the Vulcan Garden of Eden, where he dies fighting god in hand-to-hand combat
Michael, a traumatized human girl Sarek brings home from a work trip, who joins Starfleet, becomes their first-ever mutineer, goes to prison, saves the Federation from a war most people think is her fault and gets “killed” in a highly classified, very suspicious incident involving an experimental starship and a series of red lights that appeared across the galaxy like a divine omen (oh, and returns 900 years later to solve the dilithium crisis, kill the head of the Emerald Chain and save two entire star systems including her siblings' homeworld)
and last but not least Sarek & Amanda's one-of-a-kind hybrid baby. Spock, who gets accepted into the Vulcan Science Academy, tells them to go fuck themselves when they're racist about it, runs off to Starfleet instead, gets so famous his arranged marriage falls apart resulting in him publicly strangling his own captain to death except not really, steals the Federation flagship twice, invents time travel, saves the entire planet Earth, dies and comes back to life, goes into his dad's line of work and achieves peace with the freaking Klingons as his opening act, then after a long successful career suddenly dips to go do extremely dangerous underground activism on one of the most paranoid authoritarian worlds in the galaxy to unify the Romulans & Vulcans who've hated each other for over a thousand years — and he isn't around to see it but it eventually works. then he fucks off with the VSA's high-speed prototype ship full of the most dangerous substance known to science and gets sucked into a black hole of his own creation, never to be seen again. and this is just the stuff that's public knowledge!
then you dig into the novels where Sarek's ancestor basically makes out with Zefram Cochrane 5 seconds after meeting him and Amanda tells the press her husband has a huge cock
I love them
