Obbligato: The Punishment of Kaname Tojo - 9
Writer: Akira
Season: Spring, two years ago
Characters: Tatsumi, Kaname
Proofreading: Remi (JP) & honeyspades (ENG)
Translation: Peace
Tatsumi: We are mirrors of one another, kindred souls.
Tumblr media
[Read on my blog for the best viewing experience with Oi~ssu ♪]
Location: At the same time, on the stage of Reimei Academy's "Third Auditorium"
Tatsumi: "My beloved peers of Reimei Academy, thank you for coming."
"I, Tatsumi Kazehaya, have something of great importance to tell you all today."
Tumblr media
Kaname: ......
Tatsumi: (Whispering) Hm... They don't seem particularly pleased, though I expected as much.
The Special Students don't seem to like how I’m speaking on my own at the moment. If it wasn't for your persuasion, HiMERU-san, I don't believe any of them would have shown up.
Kaname: I didn't really persuade them, I just gave them money.
Or rather, I gave them the job of gathering here as an audience, with a promise of receiving more concessions and such for their future work.
The time for compassion and persuasion has long passed, Tatsumi-senpai.
Tatsumi: Not so. I'm certain that anyone who isn't a Special Student must feel sympathetic — look at everyone who's come who won't be getting a cent out of it.
Kaname: That's because they're still expecting great things from you. They have hope you might be able to change this hellhole of a school.
Tatsumi: ......
Kaname: Anyway, let's stop chit-chatting and return to the topic at hand. The money I tossed around will be a waste otherwise.
Tumblr media
Kaname: ... In the end, I wasn't as beloved as you were.
Reimei Academy's Top Idol. It feels like a position I just bought rather than earned. The academy's higher-ups would give me plenty of money...
And using that, I simply got to where I am today. But in the end… no one, not a single person, loved me the way they did you.
Do you hate me for learning such dirty tricks, Tatsumi-senpai?
Tatsumi: Of course not. In fact, I believe that knowledge must be your strength — I respect you for doing what I could not.
Tumblr media
Kaname: You really do speak from the heart. Don't ever become like me, senpai.
Remain as pure as you are in this moment.
Better yet, I'll do all I can to ensure that you do.
I've made up my mind. Maybe I am an idiot, but in my own stupid way I've thought desperately of what I could do and chosen my own path.
I want to die for your ideology.
With you as a model for sainthood, I'll become a bit of a better person than I am now.
Tumblr media
Tatsumi: I am not a saint, however...
If someone believes in me, if they expect something of me, then I shall act as they wish. Though it would be disrespectful to myself — though it is most certainly a sin to the body as a vessel of life...
If it would make others even a little bit happier, then I will gladly wear a crown of thorns.
Amen.
Tumblr media
Tatsumi: "— Students of Reimei Academy."
"Are you happy right now?"
"I would like each of you to put your hand to your heart and truly give my question some thought. Are you satisfied with the life you've lived thus far? Are you lacking in something? Do you feel as if you've experienced misfortune?"
"No matter your answer, I ask that you listen to my announcement until the end."
"I have decided that HiMERU-san and I shall form a unit from today on, for the sake of bringing a little more happiness to the Academy.
"Fufu. Those of us in Reimei Academy might not be too familiar with such a concept, of course..."
"However, the concept is more normalized within another long standing idol training school, Yumenosaki Academy."
"In short, an idol unit is exactly as it implies: rather than doing things individually, he and I shall be performing them as a group."
"A 'unit' shares a common destiny. They are alike to a family, company, or even a nation."
Tumblr media
Tatsumi: "We are mirrors of one another, kindred souls."
"As we move together from hereon, all that we earn will be distributed fairly among our members."
"Those who have previously joined me in the catacombs will understand what I mean when I say that."
"However, those who are Special Students may not be as aware of this arrangement. In Reimei Academy, our rewards are based on how well we do individually; it's a very result-focused system."
"I'd like to ask that all Special Students adhere to this arrangement from here on. Our unit shall not allow any one person to monopolize wealth nor to run wild on their own."
"In doing so, we shall seek a joyous future where one and all can live together fairly."
Tumblr media
Tatsumi: "... I see there's some pushback. You may be asking yourself, ‘Why should I work for others when I can simply work for myself? Why should they reap the rewards I sow?’"
"However, this is the best way forward. Let us say, as an example, that you make a mistake or incur an injury and can no longer work."
"Or rather than earning money, you find yourself falling into debt."
"Our unit would never abandon anyone to such a fate."
"By taking responsibility on behalf of the individual affected, we will compensate for their losses and ensure that no one falls victim to circumstances outside of their control."
Tumblr media
Tatsumi: "The present day idol industry is on a decline. As a result, there are numerous pitfalls that can cause one to fall to ruin; we'd like to support one another in such times of despair, to overcome them."
"No, we absolutely must support one another if we wish to survive. Unfortunate as it is, we have already been driven to such a point."
"I'm sure some of you have already realized that by now."
Tumblr media
Tatsumi: "This is Hell. We aren't able to live as we once did, not when the end is nigh."
"It is already so difficult to breathe — and if you allow your attention to slip for even a moment, you face miserable repercussions immediately."
Tumblr media
Kaname: " — We wish to change that."
"From this moment on, we are inviting you all to form a unit with us."
"Through a simple process, you will be welcomed immediately as one of ‘us’."
Tumblr media
Tatsumi: "And finally, the most important point: all are welcome to join us, whether you are a Special Student or not."
"Unfortunately, as it stands... We, who are Special Students, and those who are not, dislike each other immensely."
"I'm certain that there will be a great many who won't wish to work together."
"However... If you can, please swallow your doubts and walk with us. I firmly believe this is the only path towards a happier future."
"Ideally speaking, we'd like to make every student in Reimei Academy part of our unit — and in doing so, have a truly fair and just school."
"All would work, and all would reap the rewards sown equally."
"At present, you gain only a little by stepping on the backs of others so arrogantly — it's a deplorable practice, so let's stop it."
"If it continues, then the disparity will never disappear. If we do not strive to create an impartial environment, then there will always be those who are fated to be trampled on."
Tumblr media
Tatsumi: "I don't wish to witness such a sight any longer."

Could Crimson Flower have worked?
Tumblr media
I mean, yeah, the title is easy to answer if you “yes if the devs focused on one story and not four” but I feel like I should add a bit more than that after my long Blue Lions post from the other day.
In that other post I claimed Dimitri is set up as the ultimate focal point to tackle the major story and mystery beats of Fodlan’s setting but it is possible to argue that Edelgard is even more worthy of that spot.
Her ancestor, the first emperor of Fodlan, was an ally of Rhea when she acted as Saint Seiros and even shared blood giving the royal line her crest.
It was her ancestors who passed down the knowledge that Rhea and those secretly keeping Fodlan’s status quo were not human.
The founding of the church and the Adrestian empire coincide with one another.
‘Those Who Slither in the Dark’ (hereon Agarthans) had long since infested the empire and swapped out key figures with their agents.
The top six nobles set Edelgards dislike for the aristocracy into motion.
She had to watch her siblings die horribly in the palace dungeons as the Agarthans experimented on all of them.
She has personal ties to Dimitri, the prince of another kingdom the Agarthans are trying to destroy, due to her mother marrying it’s king.
Edelgard herself was living in the kingdom a short while which may have reinforced her views on crests and nobility due to the Faerghus kingdom being even more strict on those and religious topics.
And this is only a few of the things you could list in her backstory. Whether you learned it in 3 Houses, DLC, or 3 Hopes.
In a sense, you can say that Edelgard begins the “story right in the thick of it” vs Dimitri who’s “drawn into it” by his families assassination.
Tumblr media
Yes splitting a Fire Emblem story is a bad idea
The issue with it all was the execution. The same for Dimitri or Claude. Splitting the story into routes seems to just not work for a Fire Emblem game. Perhaps if they’d leave it at two routes or just one with alternative endings it’d be fine but they tend to get over ambitious from what I can tell after playing Fates, 3 Houses, and 3 Hopes.
And while I think Fates had the worst story due to this decision I do think this decision hurt Crimson Flower quite badly. Edelgard’s story needs a great deal of context and lack of it is what causes the intense debates on the legitimacy of her actions.
The story route is too short, you never once turn on the Agarthans which left it feeling unfinished, and Edelgard has a very iron fist approach hoping to push her ideals at the cost of burning the world down.
I won’t get into the debate of what’s right or wrong with her actions. If anything, I find Edelgard and Rhea great parallels because they’re essentially the same in many areas. Women who are good at heart but will do cruel or evil things. Contradictory if you will and marred by their traumas.
Tumblr media
You would need Shez for this to work
To get to the point, before I slip into mindless rambling again, I do think Edelgard could’ve worked quite well. Better than the Blue Lions in fact. Crimson Rose just needed proper focus and some explanation of Edelgard’s actions.
You shouldn’t change what she does or her ideals since that’s core to her route but it would be best to have as much insight into why she’s doing it as possible.
Above all, I believe her story only works under those conditions if you do what Shez did in 3 Hopes. You do not need Shez themselves but you do need a similar play to what they domino into effect.
And I say this because Edelgard’s plans and work makes the most sense in 3 Hopes. Shez caused the Agarthans to appear early which let her run them out of the empire and seize it. That act was very crucial to me buying her route and it’s possibilities at all.
Since I find it hard to swallow as a player in her other routes to work alongside ‘Those who slither in the dark’. It makes no sense to me that she wouldn’t jump at the first chance to oust them and 3 Hopes played on that same notion.
Tumblr media
Once 3 Hopes got Edelgard’s story going I found it much easier to go along with compared to Crimson Flower. If 3 Houses had done this and spent the game focusing on just that I could see it being better than even a hypothetical game focused solely on the Blue Lions.
Rather than solving the mysteries of Fodlan, Edelgard could expose them.
Rather than cooperate with Shambala she could make it a priority.
You could focus on the parallels between Edelgard and Rhea and even have Edelgard recognize this.
It’d be interesting to watch Edelgard realize her ideals are a bit too idealistic. Let’s be honest, they are, but that doesn’t make them unworthy of pursuing. In 3 Hopes Dimitri was the only leader to display the wisdom that change can’t be rushed. He too seeks it but knows it has to be done slowly.
Imagine if Edelgard took this lesson to heart. Imagine if her friends refined her ideas over the story like that one random support in which Ferdinand unintentionally offered up the idea of a regulated public school system. He did so after hearing Edelgards own idea to teach more than just the noble class.
That one support could’ve been a great theme to apply to more of her supports. Her friends helping her build her ideals.
I would still leave the moral quandaries of her and the war she starts but you can give what she intends to do more depth.
How will she replace aristocracy?
Will she even decide to do so by the end?
How will she help the common man?
How will she rectify a honest church when her own Southern Church is just a political tool?
How does she plan to offset corruption in her new system? The noble and crest system is very corrupt but so is our own alternatives in the real world. No governing system is perfect.
Does Edelgard even realize this in the heat of her revolution?
Will Edelgard spare the Leicestor Alliance or conquer it?
All fun things you could build on if you just focused on her story alone. There is potential there and I’d be very inclined to see it should they ever decide to make another 3 Houses spin off.
Tumblr media
Byleth
The question of how to kick this possible branch off would also lie with Byleth I think. I earnestly believe Edelgard’s story works so well in 3 Hopes because she does the smarter decision of ousting the Agarthan infestation. She has more time to plot her war and reform her nation.
That really works in her favor as a story lead in my opinion but we still need someone to help her kick those events off. It would be easy to reuse Shez here but I think Byleth is a more intriguing option.
As the vessel of the goddess of which the Church of Seiros worships it offers a unique realization for Edelgard. Rhea may have founded the faith on lies and warped history with half truths but the goddess herself is very much real.
How does Edelgard rectify this truth? Especially if Byleth is the teacher she admires and the reason she’s able to reveal Arundel as an imposter?
Edelgard even wonders in 3 Hopes if her attraction to Byleth is due to her cest of Seiros resonating with the crest of flames.
How does Byleth help her dethrone Arundel and the Noble Six? Depends on you. You can do what they did in 3 Hopes with Shez or you can do a slower alternative with the class set up from 3 Houses. In either case it’s doable and a bit more compelling.
Tumblr media
Conclusion
No I do not know how to conclude or expand on this route more. The point I hoped to make was that Edelgard could’ve been a great route. There is a lot there and it offers so much to work with had the developers and writers chose too.
I doubt we’d ever see a genuine focus on her but one can hope. If not her at least Azure Moon. Heck, despite my lost posts I do still prefer Claude and the Golden Deer so I’d even take a focus on them.
That’s a rant for another day however. Bye now.

Fictober 2019, Day 9
Prompt: “There’s a certain taste to it.” Fandom: Ikemen Vampire Pairing: Le Comte/MC Rating: general audiences
The afternoon air was finally cool and crisp after a long and extended warm and arduous summer. She always looked forward to experiencing that first breath of calming chill in the air and there was a skip in her step now as she walked from the public library back to the Comte’s mansion.
The colder winds was a signal of sorts that another year of living with the greatest names of history was coming to an end.
Even after spending three years with them, she still could not believe it.
As she closed the gate to the mansion, she wondered if she should do something special for dessert for the boys to mark the changing of seasons.
So she headed for the kitchens. Sebastian would be busy with dinner prep so she could bounce ideas with him. Back in her time, fall was popular for two things: Halloween, and fall-themed drinks.
Halloween, or at least, the one she and Sebastian were used to, had not been invented yet and she figured that vampires and scary costumes were not the best thing to mix. So maybe, something pumpkin-y?
Where to get it though? Her experience with the flavour had always been commercial side. She could try to recreate it but it was going to take time and a lot of experiments.
All the more to ask her fellow time-traveller then.
However, as she donned her apron and entered the mansion’s kitchen, the man who was busy behind the counter was the one she least expected to see.
“Comte?” She asked, surprised to see the grand master of the mansion wearing an apron very similar to hers. Not only that, he was surrounded by Sebastian’s usual cooking materials, and something that smelled savory was cooking in the big pot behind him.
Wait. Not exactly Sebastian’s usual.
“Oh.” The Comte looked up, surprised and then just the faintest bit of what looked like a blush. “Sebastian said you wouldn’t be for another hour.”
“What are you doing here, Comte?” She asked, stepping closer. And saw that he was not only cooking, it looked as if he was trying his hand at baking as well. His apron was coated with flour dust, and some of the containers on the table looked like they contained sugar, nutmeg, and cinnamon, among others.
“Well…”  The Comte Saint de Germain hesitated, and then waved at the table in front of him. “I’m watching the stew.”
She did not move.”
“Ah. No use hiding it now that you’ve found me out.”
She raised her hands. “If you don’t want to be disturbed, it’s okay, I could just find Sebastian and – ”
“It’s quite all right.” The Comte scratched at his cheek. “To be honest, I finished a sample and I needed someone to taste it for me.”
“Okay.” She answered, doing her best to contain her excitement and the rush of relief that he had not chosen to keep this a secret. Whatever it was the Comte was trying to do, she wanted to be part of it. “What do we have here, then?”
“Well.” The Comte turned around and headed for the counter behind him. “I’m trying to recreate a certain dessert I’ve had in one of my travels.”
“Right.” She said, looking at the ingredients before her, trying to guess what it could be.
“It’s a little bit sweet but has a bit of kick to it.” the Comte turned back, and was carrying a tray with two pieces of bread, both of which were topped with a generous serving of something white. “I’m not sure if I got it right though.”
“It looks tasty!” She exclaimed, leaning closer to take a whiff. “Is that cinnamon?”
“Yes.” The Comte placed his hands on the table.
“What is it?” She asked, noticing his hesitation.
“That’s exactly it. I can’t remember the name. I remember it wasn’t English sounding though. I was passing through a marketplace and chanced upon it. I’ve never seen it again.”
She raised her brows. The Comte forgetting a detail as important as a name seemed to be unlikely but here they were. So even the grand master had his own quirks. “Or, it could just be a plain cinnamon bun.”
For a moment, he stared at her with wide horrified eyes and she scrambled to say something else, a remark, an excuse for her being so un-creative – something to remove the look of utter shock on the Comte’s face when all of a sudden, he laughed.
A hearty, shaking his shoulders, and closing his eyes kind of laugh.
And a contagious one too. Then again, she always felt better whenever she saw the Comte smile. As if just by seeing him happy made the world a better place.
“Goodness, of course.” He finally said. “A cinnamon bun.”
“I don’t mean to say there isn’t a more nuanced name…”
“No, no. I think you’re right.” The Comte looked at her. “Living all these centuries has made me quite the complicated thinker, I think. Making things more conspiratorial than they really are. When the truth sometimes is just right there for us to see.”
He motioned to the bread. “Well, if you may, ma cherie?”
“Oh! Right, right of course.” She took the bread and fork offered to her, sliced off a small part and tasted.
It was nothing short of bliss. She closed her eyes, savoured the taste of cream and the kick of cinnamon on a perfectly baked bread. She took her time chewing, wondered if her tongue could be blessed by any ordinary cinnamon bun from hereon out.
“How is it?” the Comte asked.
“It’s delicious!” She answered. “I think you did a perfect job here. I’d never had anything nearly as good.”
The Comte let out a breath, shoulders relaxing. “The cinnamon isn’t too strong?”
“Not at all.” She said.
“Good. You think the others will like it?”
“They’ll love it!” She answered. “Except, Theo though. Because pancakes is top tier already. I don’t think he’ll be appreciative of this.”
That earned her another laugh, a shorter and more subdued one. But gods above, it was rewarding enough.
“So. I just want to tweak it a little bit. The taste is there, the cinnamon is my foundation, but I need it just a little bit more.” The Comte motioned to the rest of the ingredients. “Help me with the rest?”
“Sure, absolutely.” She said. “But, I’m just curious. Why are you so keen on getting a pastry right?”
“Have you noticed it’s been a bit colder recently?”
She nodded.
“There’s a certain taste to it.” He finally said, his eyes misting at the memory. “A bit of falling leaves, the chill in the air, almost certainly like – ”
“The taste of fall?” She asked.
“Exactly.” He looked back at her, eyes crinkling at the edges as he smiled.
It was just one of his many smiles, and yet her heart felt full of it. At the moment, she wanted nothing more than to memorize that smile, to commit the moment to memory and keep it in the deepest parts of her soul. But even as she soared at being the object of his smile, nothing could have prepared her for what came next.
“It’s something else too.” The Comte leaned forward, a little bit playful, a little bit enticing. And her heart, then already racing, felt as if it could burst out of her at any moment.
“You came here around the same time.” The Comte eyes seemed to burn into her, and he whispered. “And it’s a taste that reminds me of you.”

Psychopathy & The Myth of Moral Obligation
Tumblr media
I’m going to kick this particular post off with an overwrought analogy if I may, because this is a knotty subject and I can’t dive into it just assuming that the neurotypical understanding of antisociality/amorality/sociopathy/psychopathy/whatever term we’re to use for the sake of ease, at least, is as rudimentary as it seems. It’s obviously not, and why should it be? You have no obligation to empathise those who will not empathise with you, but if you’re going to dilly-dally between these apparently mutually exclusive and monochromatic in nature opinions, then it might be worth reading this. Or anything at all that goes some way to explain the experience of antisocial personality disorder et al, straight from the psycho’s mouth. So if there’s a website that has some good-looking stuff on there you might want to buy, maybe it’s heavily discounted designer clothes, for example, and your friends have been hyping it for some time, of course you’re going to check it out and make your own mind up. So you go there, and you browse, and pretty instantly, you’ve added several things to your basket and you’re happy you came here -- it’s almost too good to be true, you wonder if the seller is aware of how high quality these clothes are. Click, beautiful dress. Click, insanely cheap fine leather boots. You’ll look fucking amazing in those. However, it’s not long before some of your friends warn you that the whole site in fact hinges on a phishing scam, and they’ve all been conned out of hundreds of pounds, and you’d be wise to stay away. You have other friends who used the site without a hitch, but they’re kind of unreliable friends. In fact from hereon in, assume that everyone in your life is unreliable as a narrator in some way. Anyway, you are now faced with a decision - do you want to risk it all and input your sensitive information on the off-chance that you’ll get lucky, be spared, even, or do you walk away and know fully that your bank account is safe and protected? You have reason to believe you are about to be left vulnerable, so ultimately, if you choose not to hand over your sort code and account number, are you discriminating? You notice the site is operational from China, you fucking racist, mate? You a fucking racist now? You privileged? Wanna check that privilege? And conversely, if you do disclose your information, are you advocating fraud? Are you going to contact the site’s owners and empathetically tell them they can be saved? Are you going to loudly advertise the site to your friends and, when they say they’ve heard it’s a scam, are you going to say: “You fucking racist, mate? You a fucking racist now? You privileged? Wanna check that privilege?” You’re poor and losing money would fuck things up for you for a long time, but those boots, those amazing boots will make everyone jealous and project an image of a version of you you’d like to be more often. So what do you do? What’s morally right? What dozen things are you doing when you perform the singular act of making a should-I-shouldn’t-I decision? The truth is blindingly and infuriatingly simple, and that is - you’re doing none of those things. If you take the risk, you’re merely taking a risk. If you protect yourself, you are merely protecting yourself. You are aware that “bad” people exist, that exploitation is real, but you don’t have to have any strong opinions on it. The only thing you have to do is decide if you want to be in it or not. And it would be you putting you in it - in this case the threat you would be facing is not violent or unexpected, it’s not that someone will break into your home, locate your safe, shoot at the lock, threaten you with knives. It’s that you willingly left your doors unlocked and advertised to your neighbourhood that this was the case. But who would do that? Who would ever do that? As it turns out, a lot of you would. When you White Knight the psychopath you are protecting your own morality to a degree that will potentially cause you harm, and signalling that your acceptance and altruistic levels of empathy are - to you - far more important than protecting yourself from real — not guaranteed, but potential — danger to yourself and maybe even your loved ones. But it seems we have reached a place in our endless search for good, that we are — okay, you are — putting yourselves at risk. And it’s interesting what that says about you. Think about what that says about you. Because no matter what, the psychopath isn’t suffering. You cannot be sectioned for psychopathy/ASPD alone, same as with narcissism. You are not experiencing pervasive distress and upset because of your disorder. You’re doing just fine. So mercy isn’t wanted, there is an ambivalence in its reception; not being a welcome surprise and not being an outrage, it’s a nothing, and if the psychopath ever does thank you for it, they are being insincere and you have become the mark (probably in a minor way, calm down). Why? Because psychopathy is at the stark end of ASPD, and ASPD is a pervasive and persistent disorder with a dazzling array of rigid symptoms that make no sense to a lot of people; disregard for societal norms (i.e the law), amorality, a marked deficit in/maybe even complete lack of spontaneous empathy, varyingly low levels or remorse/guilt/shame. Hard to understand, yes, but nobody is asking you to. This is the ugly truth: it’s not that psychopaths are running on hot at all times just maintaining this facade because it’s no facade. It's not that psychopaths simply don’t understand morality because they do. It’s not that psychopaths are overcompensating for not being loved because mostly psychopaths can be loved whenever the hell they want. Don’t feel sorry for the psychopath, they don’t feel sorry for you. Do you see where I’m heading with this?
Tumblr media
I feel this lack of understanding breeds a frantic need to know it all. And that makes sense, the truth isn’t palatable or even rational. But it's the truth. Instead of sainting the psychopath, sate your need for closure by learning about what and how the psychopath thinks, without any desire at all to change their systems and constructs, and you may begin to understand why no antisocial (at the very least) on this whole earth is ever going to sincerely express upset if they feel they are being essentialised, or that people are over-cautious around them. When you speak on behalf of psychopaths and demand compassion in place of them, you are assuming that antisocials and psychopaths are not capable of grabbing compassion all on their very own. At best, you are reaching at the tragically tenuous idea that antisocials et al are able to change with specifically your intervention, that love and affection and a warm cup of cocoa will fix them, that the reason we are seemingly so cold and blunted is because we've never known real love, or that some tragic life event has left us broken, we’ve seen some things, man, and you’re the hero who noticed the tears behind the scowl and decided to bandage our wounds and begin the healing. But listen to me: ASPD is no insanity defence. It is no excuse. It is no justification or rationalisation, and we’re not fighting for that (or anything). The empaths are. Because really, antisocials don't need saving, and we’re not interested in giving you retribution via a sincere self-improvement that metaphorically pats you on the back and says, “good job”, I mean if we don’t have to save ourselves then we certainly have no desire to save you, that's for sure, however indirectly (and we do notice when you’re doing that. We see you.). Because at worst, you are making the blind assumption that the traits of the antisocial personality - specifically reduced capacity for empathy, remorse… aren't even real, that you know better than they do, than anybody does. However, it makes sense that people want to understand something that seems a directionless and motiveless threat, something or someone that goes so against the grain of what is good and right that their whole personality is based on not caring about you -- that is a deeply unpalatable thought to mostly everyone else, because people run from the truth, and if they can’t do that then they’ll just go to great lengths to hide it from themselves, and construct quasi-fantastical distractions to participate in, delusions to hide in, because the truth of badness as a concept is too much. For many the delusion is “they have some light in them somewhere”. But it’s not your place to go looking, and to think otherwise, does not make you the bad person. Thinking otherwise does not make you the psychopath, stop worrying, calm down, go home. Walk it off. Take a nap.  This isn’t a call to arms, none of this is a rousing declaration of intent — leave your card details or don’t, you’re your own person. But if you’re reading this and thinking, “but I CAN change them, societal revolution will change them!” or find yourself caught up in any more of this hysterical and labile sense of moral obligation to the broken, baby birds you see in us, twitching on the snowy ground, then please do consider my final three questions, and answer them to yourself before doing anything else at all?  1. If you can change someone’s entire personality can you also change a person’s sexuality? Give that a go and get back to me.  2. What about you is so special that — after leaving yourself open to attack in order to prove some altruistic point — you’ll be spared, even celebrated and revered? And 3. With a messiah complex as audacious and inflexible as yours, have you ever considered you might have a personality disorder? Because I can save you. Don’t tell me what it is. I’ll save you.
