Love Astrid and Fishlegs just casually discussing the fact that Hiccup is an amazing gift giver in Sandbusted like it's common knowledge. I love imagining them all giving each other gifts on their birthdays and Snoggletog

I feel like Hiccup probably makes them little things like little inventions to make their lives easier or little like,,, scrap metal sculptures for decoration? Also drawings, he'll give them drawings of their dragon or smth? But mostly the little inventions and stuff

Astrid I think would probably get really freaked out about finding/giving gifts, but she tries her best. Mostly new daggers or smth, sometimes a new pair of boots, it's all very practical.

Snotlout gives like, weirdly thoughtful gifts (bc he's just like that lol), like if he sees a piece of jewelry that reminds him of one of them, or like, sew them something, he's just very very sweet. On the other end of the spetrum he has been known to give them like fucking homemade statues of himself sooooo

Fishlegs is THE sweetest ever, he makes scarves and blankets and stuff, little wood carvings, homemade candles, bakes bread, bouquets of flowers, etc etc (he also paints rocks)

Ruffnut doesn't really make anything, but she does shop, so when Snoggletog or a birthday or something is coming up she goes to the Northern Market and buys stuff for whoever needs a gift. It's always a little outlandish, but weirdly fitting. Like a solid gold maces and talons set or like, the flashiest tunic you've ever seen, she also loves buying the most RIDICULOUS stuff like a giant stuffed shark that's been idk fuckin bedazzled or smth (that was for snotlout and it sits proudly in the main room of his hut)

Tuffnut gives them random crap he finds lying around, a cool rock, earrings made from chicken's feathers, a trophy he took off a dragon hunter, the biggest, coolest branch he can find, etc etc. His favorite thing to do is steal stuff from Viggo's tent when they raid the dragon hunters and give those things as presents. He stole Viggo's maces and talons set piece by piece over MONTHS and gave it back to him on his birthday (Viggo didn't even want to ask how he knew his birthday)

Okay, this is going to be a bit confusing as my English continues to suffer. 

I like the "Sandbusted" series. Not only because of the romance at the end and Hiccup's interaction with Snotlout, but also because in this series Hiccup and Astrid got to know each other better. 

Astrid appreciates practicality very much – therefore, she wants to find a gift for Hiccup that would be useful to him, that would not gather dust on the shelf. But for Hiccup, it is not so much practicality that is important as sincerity – therefore, he wants to give Astrid a locket as a sign of his feelings for her, but he forgets that a chain is needed for the locket to wear it. 

The problem is that none of them knew what was important to the other. Astrid wanted to find a practical gift for Hiccup, not knowing that intimacy was more important to him. Hiccup wanted Astrid to feel his love for her through the locket, but for Astrid, practicality is more important – a locket without a chain would not be the most suitable gift for her. 

I like that by the end of the series, Hiccup and Astrid were able to figure out their mistakes. Seeing that Astrid is upset, Hiccup thinks that his gift is not useful enough for her. Instead of being offended, he says, "Okay. If you don't like it…». Perhaps he wants to say that he is ready to find another, more suitable gift if she does not like the locket. Astrid, in turn, admits that she did not find a gift for Hiccup that would be useful to him. Hiccup assures that the practicality of the gift is not important to him at all, the giver himself is important to him. 

Thus, Hiccup and Astrid got to know each other better. Hiccup made a chain to the locket so that Astrid could wear it comfortably. Astrid gave Hiccup a big hug, knowing that it would make him happier than the most useful gift.

So I was just rewatching RTTE and I think I found my favorite episode, and it’s definitely Sandbusted.

Everything about this episode is great. I love the uncommon duos that are shown, like Hiccup and Snotlout, and Fishlegs and Astrid.

Like how you can tell Snotlout really wants to help Hiccup with his gift for Astrid and just likes annoying Hiccup, and how Fishlegs is acting as Astrid’s wingman.

The twins as usual are great, with Tuffnut having the trigger word “tears” and Ruff comforting him 🥹. Also the twins helping Astrid with their great fashion sense, amazing.

All the hiccstrid too 😍. Hiccup tells her that she’s the greatest gift he could ever have like what??!! They’re so cute and for what. And when Astrid was trying to avoid Hiccup, that was kind of funny. When she said Stormfly was just excited to see Johan Stormfly looked at her like “bitch what??”

Or when Astrid is frantically looking for Hiccup and even lashes out at the twins because she’s so worried. But she does apologize, she learned from an earlier episode not to be too harsh on them, even though Tuff’s comment about Hiccups leg was a little out of pocket.

Even the new dragon in this episode was great. I personally really like the Sandbuster, it’s glass thing is really cool, and it’s model is really interesting too, I really like how it looks.

Oh! And when Hiccup and Snotlout disappear, Hookfang freaks out and starts digging in the sand cus he’s worried 🥹, he’s the cutest (he’s my favorite dragon in the whole franchise so ima little biased)

But my all time favorite part about this episode is Snotlout’s obvious character growth. From HTTYD 1 and Rob/DoB and even a little from the first few seasons of RTTE, Snotlout has grown and matured a lot throughout the series. But you can really tell just how much he’s grown to respect Hiccup as a leader and care/value him as a friend in this episode. He really tries to help Hiccup “fix” his gift for Astrid, even though Hiccups gift is already perfect❤️, still, the necklace idea was great. And he tells Amus they weren’t leaving without Hiccup, when in earlier shows, he definitely would of got out of there to save himself. And how he just trusts Hiccup can get them out of there instead of fighting him on it and saying he should be in charge. You can still see arrogant and obnoxious Snotlout was still there, now he’s just mature enough to realize his own strengths and Hiccups strengths. And he knew that he probably wouldn’t be too much help in this situation by coming up with a plan. I don’t know if any that made sense but I tried. I’m not good with words 🥲

I still love how Hiccup and Snotlout kept their sassy and head butting relationship though! The little comments through out this episode really made appreciate this duo more.

Snotlout: Aaargh!! I hate being confused!

Hiccup: Really? I figured you’d be used to it by now.

Snotlout: Heard that-

Snotlout: Oowww! You break this stuff it’s really sharp owowowow-

Hiccup: Then don’t break it

Snotlout: A little late for that- but thank you☺️

Snotlout: I don’t know just do what he says, he’s always right so there’s really no point.

Hiccup: What was that Snotlout?

Snotlout: You’re like a ray of light. Lighting my way. Super shiny! Never mind.

Hiccup: yeah yeah, uh huh…

Those are some of my favorite moments, but yah all in all this episode is by far my favorite. I will definitely be talking more about this series in the future so be prepared.

There are a lot of dragons in RTTE, and some of them look better than others. But these designs are some of the worst imo (except for maybe the Grim Gnashers), and I think I’ve finally figured out why. Pretty much all the other dragons have small, uniform scales all over their bodies, with a few larger ones scattered on their heads and forelimbs. Their scales form one continuous layer.  But all four of these dragons have very large, prominent scales in one colour, on  top of a lighter or darker shade underneath. It looks like their scales have been stuck on. The smaller scales look more natural whereas this looks really fake.  I have no idea if these were designed by the same people, but given the similarities it wouldn’t surprise me. Or it could be an animation shortcut 🤷🏼‍♀️.

I'm trying to count how many times Hiccup is captured/kidnapped throughout both series, the movies and the short films, so here's my criteria:

Any time he is unwillingly moved from one location to another by a dragon, viking or other character.

This includes any dragons picking him up and flying off somewhere, even if he is okay with it later.

This does not include when Toothless/his friends drag him off to show him something.

Any situation that prompted the dragon riders to rescue him.

Any plans that involved him giving himself up or joining up with a villain/antagonist.

This does not include the time he and Dagur were trapped on that island together.

Any time he is tied up and led somewhere or locked up/held in place with a guard.

Here is the list of situations I have compiled in (hopefully) chronological order:

HTTYD

Congratulations, no captures or kidnappings.

GIFT OF THE NIGHT FURY

When Meatlug (accidentally) brings Hiccup along to the Rookery.

RIDERS OF BERK

S1E6 - Hiccup gets taken to Dragon Island.

S1E16 - Hiccup is captured by the Outcasts on their island.

S1E19 - Alvin Captures Hiccup and Toothless at the "Isle of Night".

DEFENDERS OF BERK

S1E20 - Hiccup gives himself up to Dagur as part of his plan with Alvin.

RACE TO THE EDGE

S1E1 - the Dragon Riders get captured by Daugr on a hunter ship.

S1E7 -The twins put him in prison (this one's just here because I think it's funny).

S2E6 - The Dragon Hunters capture him.

S2E11 - The Dragon Riders get captured trying to save the Skrill.

S3E1 - Hiccup is captured by Dragon Hunters while trapped on an island with Dagur.

S3E8 - Hiccup and Toothless get caught in a Dragon Hunter Trap and are kidnapped and forced to participate in dragon fights.

S3E12 - Viggo captures all the Dragon Riders at the auction.

S3E13 - The Defenders of the Wing capture the Dragon Riders.

S4E3 - First Hiccup is caught by Amos and Berthel.

S4E3 - Then he's caught by Savage.

S4E3 - Then Krogan gets him after Throk saves him.

S4E3 - Ryker captures him for the tiniest bit right before the riders arrive.

S4E10 - Hiccup is caught with Ruffnut when he tries to rescue her from Viggo's trap. Unlike the other traps, he needs the other dragon riders to rescue them.

S5E2 - The Sandbuster captures Hiccup and Snotlout.

S6E8 - Viggo hands Hiccup over to Krogan as part of their plan.

HTTYD 2

Valka kidnaps Hiccup and Toothless.

HTTYD 3

Grimmel captures the dragon riders.

HOMECOMING

Once again, no captures of kidnappings

Up For Debate:

There are a few situations which technically fit the criteria, but I'm not sure if they fit considering the context of the show:

S5E5 - the riders are stuck on Vanaheim, guarded by the Sentinels. (Rtte)

S1E3 - This is a technicality, but when Hiccup joins up with Dagur to keep him away from the other dragons. (Dob)

EDIT: I forgot that even though my criteria says that the time Dagur and Hiccup are trapped on that island together (S3E1 of RTTE) doesn't count, because he is joining up with an (at the time) antagonist, there is a moment when Hiccup is captured by Dragon Hunters near the end of the episode.

After careful discussion (aka me ranting at my roommate) S4E10 of RTTE is also moving from "up for debate" to the official list. These changes are reflected above.

This brings our official count to 22 captures/kidnappings!

Honestly, the hardest part about this was finding the distinction between being captured or being trapped and what I wanted to count. When Hiccup isn't captured, he spends a lot of time in traps.

Okay but watching Sandbusted I had a thought

It has a very similar setup to Defiant One, with Hiccup and Snotlout trapped alone (not counting amos the lamest) with no dragons or resources in a hostile setting

It really shows how far they've come. Because in Defiant One, Snotlout is very insecure and jealous of everything that Hiccup has done and built for himself. Now, Hiccup is more respected and successful than ever, even betrothed to the girl that Snotlout has had a crush on since ever since, and Snotlout is willing to listen to every 'order' Hiccup gives, place his life in Hiccup's hands, and refuses to leave when Hiccup tells him to. Snotlout has every reason to be jealous and angry compared to last time (not that he should, but I'm just saying, he has reason in his own head), but he isn't.

Because he understands where he and Hiccup fit in the world in relation to each other. He's confident in who he is and he's happy to follow Hiccup as his chief and leader. Idk if this makes sense or I'm just rambling but I just love them so much

In “Sandbusted” (S5E1), the moment Snotlout gets swallowed up by the sand, Hookfang immediately jumps in to try to help him, and when he and Toothless are left on the beach alone, he’s frantically digging in the sand with his wings to try to get at Snotlout. AND he’s scared, AND he’s worried, AND he goes to get Astrid and Fishlegs. AUGH my heart.

FanFriday #1: Fanfiction and the art of Snotlout and Hookfang.

For our first FanFriday, I will be looking at one of our arguably best rider-dragon duos: Snotlout & Hookfang! This post was originally going to be a one off, made around the 7th of this month, but I decided to make it into our first instalment of FanFriday instead.

Today, this list (one of many surrounding the duo, I’m sure) will only include works with just the Hookfang & Snotlout tag, so we won’t be covering fics with them as the main focus but other relationships tagged here.

It Aches So Bad by WhoIsWren — This is the first in a Snotlout and Hookfang based series titled Hook, Don’t Sink. This particular piece concerns the RoB episode Viking for Hire. In Snotlout’s POV, it accounts how Snotlout feels about his and Hookfang’s developing distance due to Hookfang’s toothache. It, as well as the rest of the work series, also involves Spitelout’s pressure on his son to be the best, and the author puts stress on Hookfang’s species as that applies to Spitelout’s demands. We also have some wholesome, platonic soulmate-esque cuddles once all is resolved and that makes everything bittersweet, though mostly sweet.

Loyalty At Heart by WhoIsWren — This is currently the last work in the aforementioned series. Here, it is in Hookfang’s POV during his panic when Snotlout goes missing in Sandbusted. The premise is sweet, and the writing is sweeter, and you get to see how Hookfang truly feels about his rider when he isn’t around and in danger.

How To Care For Your Dragon by TulipFluff — This fic is short but sweet, just like the last, but we return to Snotlout’s POV to account how Snotlout grooms Hookfang and how Hookfang lets him (an act of appreciation). In the background, Snotlout’s Terror, Pain (now named Lockjaw), from Worst In Show also makes an appearance. It’s always nice to see the inner-workings of these two’s relationship, even if the work itself isn’t psychoanalytical. What a lovely read!

On Trust by piratesPencil — This fic has a very unique approach to Snotlout and Hookfang’s relationship: Hookfang being glad that Snotlout is one short potato. Accompanying this insight is reflection on how Vikings used to treat dragons in comparison to now. This work is perhaps the sweetest, maybe even my favouritest out of the bunch, because of how interesting the base concept is. If you’re only going to select one out of this list, I think it’d have to be this one.

Gift of the Monstrous Nightmare by sarahenany & Thursday26 — This fic is a bit long, but it is definitely worth the read! Here, it includes emphasis on Spitelout and Snotlout’s relationship (as well as some mention of Spitelout’s treatment towards the wife), but mostly involves Snotlout and Hookfang. Hookfang here also speaks Dragonese written in broken English and he and Snotlout do have some conversations back and forth which is a signature theme in sarahenany’s works. It can be a bit distracting, but I think the broken English was done in just the right amount for a fic this length. Overall, this fic includes some great Snotlout and Hookfang moments, and righteous Spitelout slander. (Plus some sweet Fishlegs moments and some Gothi musings.) What a delightful read!
