FanFriday #1: Fanfiction and the art of Snotlout and Hookfang.

For our first FanFriday, I will be looking at one of our arguably best rider-dragon duos: Snotlout & Hookfang! This post was originally going to be a one off, made around the 7th of this month, but I decided to make it into our first instalment of FanFriday instead.

Today, this list (one of many surrounding the duo, I’m sure) will only include works with just the Hookfang & Snotlout tag, so we won’t be covering fics with them as the main focus but other relationships tagged here.

It Aches So Bad by WhoIsWren — This is the first in a Snotlout and Hookfang based series titled Hook, Don’t Sink. This particular piece concerns the RoB episode Viking for Hire. In Snotlout’s POV, it accounts how Snotlout feels about his and Hookfang’s developing distance due to Hookfang’s toothache. It, as well as the rest of the work series, also involves Spitelout’s pressure on his son to be the best, and the author puts stress on Hookfang’s species as that applies to Spitelout’s demands. We also have some wholesome, platonic soulmate-esque cuddles once all is resolved and that makes everything bittersweet, though mostly sweet.

Loyalty At Heart by WhoIsWren — This is currently the last work in the aforementioned series. Here, it is in Hookfang’s POV during his panic when Snotlout goes missing in Sandbusted. The premise is sweet, and the writing is sweeter, and you get to see how Hookfang truly feels about his rider when he isn’t around and in danger.

How To Care For Your Dragon by TulipFluff — This fic is short but sweet, just like the last, but we return to Snotlout’s POV to account how Snotlout grooms Hookfang and how Hookfang lets him (an act of appreciation). In the background, Snotlout’s Terror, Pain (now named Lockjaw), from Worst In Show also makes an appearance. It’s always nice to see the inner-workings of these two’s relationship, even if the work itself isn’t psychoanalytical. What a lovely read!

On Trust by piratesPencil — This fic has a very unique approach to Snotlout and Hookfang’s relationship: Hookfang being glad that Snotlout is one short potato. Accompanying this insight is reflection on how Vikings used to treat dragons in comparison to now. This work is perhaps the sweetest, maybe even my favouritest out of the bunch, because of how interesting the base concept is. If you’re only going to select one out of this list, I think it’d have to be this one.

Gift of the Monstrous Nightmare by sarahenany & Thursday26 — This fic is a bit long, but it is definitely worth the read! Here, it includes emphasis on Spitelout and Snotlout’s relationship (as well as some mention of Spitelout’s treatment towards the wife), but mostly involves Snotlout and Hookfang. Hookfang here also speaks Dragonese written in broken English and he and Snotlout do have some conversations back and forth which is a signature theme in sarahenany’s works. It can be a bit distracting, but I think the broken English was done in just the right amount for a fic this length. Overall, this fic includes some great Snotlout and Hookfang moments, and righteous Spitelout slander. (Plus some sweet Fishlegs moments and some Gothi musings.) What a delightful read!

So what can we know about Angelique? 👀

Angelique Aurum kind of started as a silly idea I had with @thetalesofthereneverwoodd of a Lady Gaga themed bard, that I took and flushed out.

She has taken the place as the main walker of my fanplane of Crussabella after I reworked Serrabeth into being an old walker pirate from Ixalan.

Quick reminder, Crussabella is a renaissance themed plane over seen by a powerful church that seeks to protect their people from a demonic parasitic plane that seems to consume the souls of every living thing.

Angelique was born to a wealthy banking family and would have lived a rather charmed life if her family had not been killed off by cultist activity. Her uncle took advantage of the situation to take his brother land and assets giving Angelique over to the church to be raised.

She was raised within the Flock of Duty the warrior cast of the church, particular the Sanctified quire. Member of the quire are warriors who have had their voices enchanted to that their songs can bring about powerful a magical effects.

Angelique's voice though is unusually powerful as when she gave her first performance, Angelique had a prominent effect on the angels that resided within the church. The courted angels started to glow with such radiant light they filled the entire church, and filling Angelique with such a rapture her spark ignited.

She now travels the multiverse learn as much as she can about how other worlds work. After all she once sang a song powerful enough to travel worlds, could she on day sing one to sunder them?

Angelique is very tall easily seven feet, with broad shoulders and a hourglass figure. She had the build of a warrior goddess with thighs that could crush a mans skull and biceps to match. She a autumn blond with beauty olive tanned skinned and eyes the color of warm honey.

Despite being built like an Adonis Angelique style of dress is rather flamboyant and feminine. She enjoys high fashion and her outfits are often avant-garde. Usually with pearls, gold and feathers used to create a almost divine appearance.

Magic wise Angelique is Red/White aligned, with her enchanted voice forming the foundation of her spellcasting. With a scream she can shatter bone and stone, where a high note will turn metal red hot to the touch. Her songs can effect the magic around her empowering the spells of others or pulling angels from the aether.

While she is very powerful, this is very much bulging someone to death with a scalpel.

FanFriday #3: Why are these pairs so rare?

Ah! Happy (belated) third FanFriday, folks. How’s your week been? Mine’s been ordinary, but okay!

This week was tricky. Really tricky. The theme was meant to be “the best of the riders and their dragons”, with focus solely on Astrid, Fishlegs, and the twins with each of their dragons respectively.

The results felt… barbarically slim, actually.

This week’s post will include more than just fic recommendations under the cut.

This image seems accurate. Not only to canon itself, but also in the fandom. Toothless and Hiccup at the forefront and the others in the back.

At the time of this post (8/10/23) the numbers for the tags I tried exploring (otp: true, English) are as follows:

Astrid & Stormfly – 2 (1 ongoing)

Fishlegs & Meatlug – 0

Barf & Belch & Ruffnut & Tuffnut – 0

Additionally,

Heather & Windshear – 2 (1 incorrectly tagged)

Dagur & Shattermaster – 0

Dagur & Sleuther – 0

Spitelout & Kingstail – 0

Stoick the Vast & Skullcrusher – 1

And the results for other ships continue as such.

As a fic writer myself, I understand that most of the inspiration for things will tend to come from Hiccup and Toothless, as the MCs, and Hookfang and Snotlout because… well, it’s Hookfang and Snotlout. Doesn’t get much more inspirational than that.

But still, the fact that other dragon-rider duos have nothing (nothing that at least gives some focus to the tag which just seems to be bunched in with others) is quite astonishing. By statistics alone, they’re each considered to be a rarepair.

How peculiar.

And, so, I implore you all to take a step back and perhaps write that fic you wanted to write. Meatlug and Fishlegs? Twins and Barf & Belch? Doesn’t matter – the fandom’s side of the archive is in desperate need for it. All of it.

And with that, I’ll shut it and continue with this week’s scarce selection:

When Sleep Won’t Come by AHeartForStories — This fic is the only otp: true, Stormfly & Astrid result that was complete. The other, currently left incomplete, is in my marked for later. That being said, it’s very strange that this is the case. Though just because it appears to be the only result for this pair doesn’t make the scenario any less wonderful. Astrid has a nightmare and seeks comfort from Stormfly: simple, sweet. What a delightful read.

Please by AHeartForStories — This author seems to pump out so many fics, it seems, that they must be doing half the work for us, and I applaud them, because the ones that I have read, personally, are quite wrenching of emotion. This is a good example – this is one of two Heather and Windshear fics that had appeared in the search results I’d tried; one is incorrectly tagged (as otp: true, Heather & Windshear – it’s by far more Dagur & Heather based, the former duo hardly get much focus). In this fic, Heather stands during a heartbreaking performance as Ryker abuses Windshear to get to her. The end is relieving, and for a short, angsty one-shot with these guys I’d definitely point you in this fic’s direction!

Nothing Else Matters by sarahenany — This fic for some reason passed by my radar for the first FanFriday, but it’s a great fic (plus it helps pad out the list a bit to the three-fic minimum). It takes place during that disappointingly cut scene where Hookfang is struck with lightning in season six. It’s a “hidden scene”-type fic where we see Snotlout tend to Hookfang when he’s been downed. It’s a dazzling gem of a choice for these two, because they are so sweet as is. Definitely in my Top 10 so far.
