People change in ten years
"Irie Akiko watched in surprise the man who was staring at him with a kind smile while chaos was unleashed in the kitchen of what appeared to be a mansion, his hair was brown and expected on top, however, there were braids that steadied him underneath, giving him, along with his spiercings, a clear rebellious image quite contrasting with his friendly attitude.
-- So you came from the past? -- He questioned sitting down at the table and with a hand gesture asking her to accompany him.
-- DON'T SAY THAT TO HER, TSUNA! - Screamed Irie in panic in the background.
-- Sho, I think you made that very clear by your scandal seconds before. -- A young woman with long blonde hair joked.
-- My dear are right, you practically gave up the game. -- Ironized the young man with purple hair, similar to a pineapple, also present in the room.
As soon as her brother went back to ranting about how this shouldn't be happening, more and more people started showing up in the big kitchen overlooking a beautiful garden.
However, nothing seemed to really shake the brunette who poured himself a cup of tea and then offered him a cup of coffee.
-- Did you know that tomatoes are american fruits? -- He questioned, as casually as possible, resting his chin on the back of his hand, giving more prominence to his earring with a striking black feather on the tip.
Maybe it was his tone of voice, his charisma, or the contrasts in his looks, but despite the gunshots and screams all around, the young woman found herself immersed in that anecdote about tomatoes.
And when she realized it, a smoke enveloped her, taking her back to her time."

"Irie Akiko observou surpresa o homem que o encarava com um sorriso amável enquanto o caos se desatava na cozinha daquela que parecia ser uma mansão, seus cabelos eram castanhos e esperados em cima, entretanto, haviam tranças que o firmavam por baixo, dando-lhe, junto a seu spiercings, uma clara imagem rebelde bastante contrastante com sua atitude simpática.
-- Então você veio do passado?

TED LASSO
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Tumblr media
This cute little series tells the story of Ted Lasso, a football coach that, after a huge success with a college football team, gets hired to coach a British soccer team (the real football).
Hiring him seemed out of place, but the enthusiasm and assurance from the coach and his assistant to the team showed that apparently it was the right choice.
After getting to know a little bit about the story and the characters, we find out that actually this football team was the owner’s love of his life, that, after a lot of cheating and scandals, had a chaotic divorce in which his ex-wife got the team, and her plan was to hire the worst possible coach to ruin the team’s honor and name, as her big revenge.
None of this is a spoiler, because we get to know that on the second episode, and it only makes the story even cooler!
One more thing about why this series is that this is a British series, so it’s great to get used to the accent and to listen to different idioms.

Usually trailers don’t excite me to watch the series, but trust me and watch it because it’s a light and fun series!

why Uzalo has knocked Generations from its top spot?
1. Local setting, local language
Most enormous preparations in South Africa are based in Johannesburg but Uzalo was shot in KwaMashu, KwaZulu-Natal “ an unordinary setting for a nearby TV appearance. In spite of the reality that Zulu is the most widely talked dialect within the country, Uzalo is additionally the primary Zulu language-dominant appear on SABC.
2. Relatable characters
Most South Africans would be considered as either destitute or center lesson, and however most well-known show arrangements and soapies rotate around enormous companies and wealthy families, and the baddies tend to be included in white-collar wrongdoing like extortion. Uzalo, in any case, has selected to center on working-class characters, who are eventually more relatable. One of the most characters within the appear possesses a scrapyard, which is utilized as a cover for his capturing exercises.
3. Suspense-filled storylines
The exceptionally begin with a scene in Uzalo appears the Zulu and Mdletshe babies being purposely exchanged at birth. No one knows why, and fair as the nurture who made the switch is almost to confess to her minister, she is shot dead. This sets out a more noteworthy puzzle that underlies everything else that happens on the appearance. Other puzzles incorporate the address of how Gcabhashe (Mpumelelo Bhulose) got his scrapyard commerce running, something his brother keeps undermining to uncover. Not knowing of one of the most characters’ past dealings includes a component of anticipation that other dramatizations need.
4. Clever casting
The Uzalo cast may be an intelligent blend of ancient and unused faces. Groups of onlookers are recognizable with performing artist Bheki Mkhwane from Isibaya and Leleti Khumalo has been an industry top choice for a long time. These experienced cast individuals give a touchstone for watchers whereas permitting makers to support modern ability like Khumbulani Kay Sibiya and Nyamaps Maphalal.
5. Timing
Generations: The Legacy, which final year let go its cast, went on break, and after that returned looking exceptionally in an unexpected way this year, came back to confront hardened competition from eTV’s Fiery debris to Cinders, which show amid the same time opening. Its already captive group of onlookers might presently select between the two appears. In the meantime, Uzalo, which shows amid the already purge 8.30pm time opening, presently benefits from the lead-in given by the Generations.
Uzalo airs Monday to Wednesday at 20.30 on SABC 1.

This Week in BL
March 2021 Part 4
Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs.
This is a LONG ONE, it’s been A WEEK everyone.
Tumblr media
Ongoing Series - Thai
Lovely Writer Ep 5 - a little slow this week, but at least Gene finally flirted back, and very cute flirting it was, too. Also we got Aey’s motivation, background, and love interest. Thank goodness for that.
Brothers Ep 8 - still pants, what can I say? Clearly I am a BL masochist. Very embarrassing for everyone concerned.
1000 Stars Ep 9 - the conflict over Tian’s father was REALLY well done. The plot of this drama is excellent, the leads are great together, and yes I totally cried. What, you didn’t?
Tumblr media
Ongoing Series - Not Thai
Word of Honor (China) Ep 16-18 - big battle fighty fighty stabby stabby. Ep 17 switches to “this drama isn’t big enough for two chaotic-neutral godlings!” So what do they do? Drink together and bicker... A LOT. Then in Ep 18 we all get the dubious joy of really freaky puppets. (I HATE puppets.) Also how is China letting this be so SO VERY VERY GAY?  Also, I wanna walk through the forest wearing a smanshy purple robe and waving a big fuck-off white fan around simply because I’m a pretentious fuss monger. And frankly, I feel like this is an achievable life goal for me.
We Best Love 2 (Taiwan) Ep 4 - not gonna lie, this is looking to be one of my top 3 BLs of 2021. It’s SO GOOD. Big bonus to this ep for treating stalker behavior like the mental illness it is and not as some dumb representation of enduring love.
The Most Peaceful Place is My Place (Vietnam) Ep 1 - finally dropped (find it under NƠI BÌNH YÊN NHẤT LÀ VỀ BÊN EM on O2′s channel). It’s got actors already comfortable with BL and looks pretty good so far. An angry tsundere uke reunited with his ex, a stoic chef, giving us lots of snap, crackle, and pop out the gate.
Dear Uranus (Taiwan GL) Ep 2 - I want to love it, but it is just moving too fast. There’s not enough character dev and then they’re throwing flashbacks in? It feels like a treatment rather than a show, and a rushed treatment at that. Bummer.
HIStory 4: Close To You (Taiwan) Ep 2 (AKA Ep 3-4) - let the cheesy popcorn continue! Idiot remains an idiot; ingenue remains an ice queen; nice gay guy remains nice and gay; obsessive stalker brother is getting ever more whackadoddle. Of course these last two have the best chemistry. (It’s caregiver codependency and the salvation trope. We got us a Leo/Fiat situation going on.) Plus lots of classic BL tropes because OF COURSE there are lots of tropes.
Occasionally, I am tempted to argue that shows like H4 or Cherry Magic or Ossan’s Love aren’t technically BL because of the office setting and age of the protags - but then they all behave like high school students anyway, so *shrug*
Tumblr media
Stand Alones
Cute little Taiwanese micro BL Friend or Lover dropped, about bisexual realization within a friendship group. Normally these are too short for me, but this one did pretty good with its 15 minutes of charm, plus it’s abad boy + shy softy pairing.
Tumblr media
Breaking News - Thai BL
Fish Upon the Sky released its actual trailer. The upside-down kiss is gone, which makes everyone sad, and it seems far less rivals to lovers than the first iteration, which makes ME sad. But it still looks good and a more classic BL than GMMTV has given us in a while. New trailer focused more on the makeover trope and they’ve upped Mix’s role (the object of everyone’s affection) now that he’s proved himself. (Or they are using him more to carry the trailer since he has a fan base form 1k*). Starts April 9 on GMMTV in 1K*’s time slot, probably with a 10 ep run.
2gether the movie is apparently coming April 22 to Thai theaters. F4 Thailand must be having issues or GMMTV just wants to milk the BrightWin cash cow. It’s rumored to be a combination of 2gehter + Still 2gether with some extra scenes and ending. Also, one assumes a lot will be cut out, if it’s movie length.
Call It What You Want released its updated trailer. If anything, it looks more scary than before. What are we in for? April 9th.
Nitiman got a release date, May 7 on One31.
I Told Sunset About You 2 got an updated release date of May 27 on LineTV.
Second Chance the series is coming to LineTV on March 29. I don’t know much about this one. Tons of familiar faces (mostly TharnType side dishes) and some nice looking new talent but a dearth of eng subs. I think it may take on Brothers’ time slot. Line did eng subs for Brothers so maybe they will do 2nd Chance too?
Close Friend the series is coming April 22. This is a combination of 6 couples with 6 story arcs as music videos (maybe)? It’s an epic fan service with familiar faces like OhmFluke (UWMA), MaxNat (LBC also in Y-Destiny), YoonLay (YYY also in Y-Destiny), KimCop (GenY), and JaFirst (TT2).
Y-Destiny starts March 30, and has starting dropping couple’s trailers. I’m still suspicious given the director but it seems like there is plot (or plots) and a theme. Looks to be a series of 7 single ep vignettes (amended, see comments, might be 2 eps each for 14 eps total), different couple each time, some with supernatural elements, all with decent chemistry and acting chops.
Sun MaxNat’s tutor/student arc
Mon jaded rich kid meets poor innocent
Tues sports romance enemies to lovers
Weds the messy realistic actual dating one
Thurs hot ghost boyfriend (sad)
Fri YoonLayPerth coping with loss and finding new love (sad). This one will all rest on Lay's acting so we know it’s in safe hands. Our boy is going to KILL it.
Sat time-slip memory loss reunion romance
I’m thinking we can’t expect any of these to end happy or be classic BL. They’re gonna be more slice of life-ish.
Tumblr media
Gossip - BL Outside of Thailand
Scholar Ryu’s Wedding Ceremony AKA Nobleman Ryu’s Wedding (Korean historical BL) got a legit teaser (eng sub here). @curriculumvtae reports that it’s releasing April 15th on WeTV (Philippines & Thailand) and Idol Romance (South Korea), while Will of Thai Bl says it’ll be on Viki too. It’s a short run of 8 ep built on a fake relationship trope (arranged marriage variant):
Ryu Ho Seon’s (Kang In Soo from You Wish) arranged marriage turns out to be with his expected bride’s brother, Choi Ki Wan (Lee Se Jin from Mr Heart). Ryu tries to undo the marriage, but his ill mother opposes this saying the scandal would be too much. Meanwhile, Kim Tae Hyeong (Jang Eui Soo from Where Your Eyes Linger), a senior at Ryu’s school, comes to congratulate him and falls in love with Choi. Then one day, the original bride disappears.
Okay it seems a bit twisty turny for ONLY 8 EPS, but oh my goodness how excited are we? Our first intentional historical BL out of Korea!
Tumblr media
We already knew Hong Kong was doing a remake of Japan’s Ossan’s Love under the same name (not my favorite Japanese BL but so very popular) but it’s now reported to be coming to Viu in June. Who knows how the CFA will take it. Depends on whether Hong Kong bows before the NO GAY KISSES regs or if they are going to use this as a political nose thumb... things could get cray with this puppy (the original has several kisses and s shower scene). Are we back in Addicted territory only with added comedy and civil unrest?
Speaking of Japan, Absolute BL (AKA Zettai BL ni Naru Sekai vs Zettai BL ni Naritakunai Otoko) dropped sooner than anyone thought, March 27. But being Japanese who knows how/when/if we get subs. Protag finds himself trapped in a world of BL, but being straight he fights against any hot guy that draws near, but the whole world (literally) is conspiring against him. It’s a parody adapted from a yoai.
What with Absolute BL from Japan plus Lovely Writer and Call it What You Want from Thailand, is 2021 the year of BL being ultra self referential? Sure feels like it.
Tumblr media
In Case You Missed It
Faded a gay micro film from Taiwan from 2017 deals with parental acceptance and serves up a ton of BL tropes (piggyback, forehead kiss, etc). I’m pretty sure this was a propaganda piece for legalization of gay marriage, and it’s an interesting nugget of BL history as a result. Yes, it ends happy. It’s cute.
Next Week Looks Like This:
Some shows may be listed a day later than actual air date for accessibility reasons.
Tumblr media
Upcoming 2021 BL master post here.
Links to watch are provided when possible, ask in a comment if I missed something.
Man there’s a lot going on right now! Spring has sprung... I suppose.
Tumblr media
P.S. I cannot believe I missed Absolute BL as a blog name. Numbnuts = me.

Too bad, there are actually articles circulating around saying that Doom at your Service ended badly. Well, it got low ratings in Korea and I can’t explain that further.
There are a few dramas that ended with very poor ratings but in reality is a good one; DAYS was probably the one.
‘I watched until Episode 4 and didn’t get the chemistry of the lead actors so i stopped’
‘…even if you watched until Episode 14, I still couldn’t understand the story and the chemistry of the actors. And it’s boring’
‘I don’t understand the concept’
Well, these are just some of the comments I read from articles posted anywhere in the web. I don’t know about you people but I really think otherwise.
First, Doom at your Service was brought to us by TvN. The same network who brought us Hotel Del Luna, Tale of the Nine Tailed, Guardian: The Lonely and Great God, A Korean Odyssey, and the still on-going My Roommate is a Gumiho.
Doom at your Service have expert people in their roster.
Production-wise, the drama have a very good writer and a well-experienced director. Im Mae-ri was the writer of the drama Beauty Inside which is very popular abroad. Kwon Young-Il even was the director of ‘My Unfamiliar Family’, ‘Search:WWW’ and the high ranking Korean adaptation of the Western TV Series 'Suits' staring Jang Dong-gun and Park Hyung-sik.
The cast themselves have an excellent portfolio. Starring with the very gorgeous Park Bo-young herself, who is known to have a great chemistry to all her co-leads (as far as I’ve known and I’ve been following her since Werewolf Boy and Scandal Makers); a versatile actor that could do wide array of drama genre - Seo In-guk (I’ve been following him since Reply 1997).
My Thoughts
Personally, I don’t think it’s about the chemistry. The problem here is whether people are willing to accept this drama or not. Even though it has very low ratings in the Korean media, Doom at your Service is a heavily acclaimed drama abroad. It maintained it’s spot at ‘Romance in Demand’ section in Viu and a 9.7 star rating in Rakuten Viki (though it’s not available in my country). Aside from the good ratings, the drama’s reviews are also good with the comments mostly leaning on the positive side. If there isn’t any chemistry on the actors, then I don’t think it won’t get that 9.7 rating.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another thing is that I'm guessing that it’s not about the story but in the timeslot as well. It’s a story about death. And because it was, I’m pretty sure Mondays and Tuesdays are probably not the best time slot of the drama. If we compare the storyline to it’s competitors, ‘Racket Boys’ which is a sport drama, and ‘From a Distance, Spring is Green’ which is a coming of age drama. Doom at your Service, a drama which mostly talks about death, could easily be major let down.
By the way, I watch those two dramas as well so I can say that they are 'jjang' too. No means of comparison, their genre is entirely different.
However, I think it’s also because of the misconception of the storyline. Let’s all accept it, the script, the story, and just everything that is in this drama is so deep that without understanding it properly, it would put you off. This is exactly why people should start reading between the lines.
Doom at your Service is a drama that talks about death, yes. But with death there is life. You can’t talk about death without emphasizing how good it is to live.
It’s unfortunate that it ended with low ratings in Korean media but we, in the international community is very thankful of TvN. Aside from bringing us back Seo In-guk, they also brought Park Bo-young in. I think this is the first time in years since they’ve been in the screen together (the last time was during Oh My Ghostess) and fanboying aside, the storyline taught me’ many things and gave me a lot of realizations. Just as what I mentioned in my finale analysis yesterday, DAYS seemed to have been a wake up call for me to treasure life. And that’s what is important.
Well, it had a booming success abroad anyways (9.7 stars and showed in 16 countries). So that’s fine. 😏😏
And it has great OSTs❤️
..And I lay my case with my ever loving extroverted potato

Quaranthings: Korean Dramas
It’s been a while, Tumblr. LOL I haven’t posted in a while – but we are living in a time of pandemic. I have never thought such day would come but here we are.
It has been 41 days since Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) was implemented in Manila – and I have managed to catch up on my Korean drama backlog.
Thanks to streaming sites like Viu and Netflix, I have spent countless hours just catching up on the latest dramas (The King: Eternal Monarch, Itaewon Class) and the ones I have not finished watching (Mr. Sunshine, Reply 1997, Go Back Couple, Kill Me, Heal Me, My Love from the Stars). I also found time to rewatch my favorites (Secret Garden, Innocent Man).
The last one I watched was Mr. Sunshine. The writer, Kim Eun Sook, tells the story of a Joseon slave-turned-American soldier named Eugene Choi and a noble named Go Ae Sin – and the people around them: the mysterious samurai Go Dong Mae; the rich playboy Kim Hee Seong; and the beautiful, rich heiress/double agent named Hina Kudo. Set in the early years of the Korean Empire (led by Emperor Gojong), the drama depicted the political turbulence of the time: the traditional Joseon ways clashing with that of imperialists as well as the personal struggles of each character. Then there’s storge, eros, philia, and agape - I’ll probably write another review of that because in terms of writing, I think this is the best Kim Eun Sook drama.
I have been meaning to write something like this, but I guess I was inspired to share with the world why I love Korean dramas – like it really is a hill I would die on anytime.
Some weeks ago, a Filipino director openly tweeted his disdain for Korean dramas. In his words, he said that Filipino movies and tv are “doomed” because of “K-drama galore: faux Cinderella stories with belofied whiter than white actors. And it’s all about love in the midst of pandemic.”
 LMFAO. I had to laugh.
It came from a director with reputable filmography – I mean I loved two (2) of his films for their social commentary but I have to ask.
How many Korean dramas have you watched – LOL don’t tell me you only watched Crash Landing on You.
HELLO, ITAEWON CLASS WAS IN THE TOP 10. DID YOU WATCH THAT? Did you watch the rags-to-riches story of Park Saeroyi and his quest for justice to defeat the biggest food company, Janga Corporation?
Have you watched Sky Castle? The compelling story of rich families and their schemes to get their children into the best universities?
How about the Reply series? A nostalgic drama that tells the story of families, youth, and the times they lived in – 1994, 1997, 1988 – the nostalgia was fucking rich. I especially enjoyed 1994 and 1997.
Did you check out Another Oh Hae Young: a woman struggling to come into terms with her personal insecurities? Or have you picked up on It’s Okay, That’s Love: a romantic drama that properly tackled mental illness (the lead had schizophrenia).
From personal experience and the vast filmography of Korean dramas I have seen, let me point out why Korean dramas are the best – and why they’re so fucking addicting. I would have to say that this is not a research paper but rather a lengthy analysis based on my 12-year experience as a Korean drama enthusiast.
 1.      Creative value
Every drama starts with a great plot.
Sure, many Korean dramas are romantic. In fact, most of the Korean dramas I have seen in the early 2000s are romantic: Autumn in my Heart; Stairway to Heaven; Winter Sonata; Full House; My Name is Kim Sam Soon; and Princess Hours. There’s also Memories of Bali; I’m Sorry I Love You; and Coffee Prince. These dramas actually launched the Hallyu (Korean wave) that we know today – and their plots have the typical Korean drama romantic equation: guy meets girl – they don’t get along at first – then they fall in love – misunderstandings (or separation) ensues – reunited – fall in love again – they get married or end up together (or a lead dies). Then there are the non-romantic ones (historical): Jewel in the Palace and Jumong.
But as time went on, you see that the genres become varied – we started seeing action dramas (one of my favorites was Time Between Dog and Wolf) and medical dramas. Then there were dramas that also featured how Korean dramas were made (The World We Live In).
Korean dramas have varying plots that get recycled in many instances but with great plots also come characterization. The characters we see in dramas remind us of real people – we always relate to a character and we all get frustrated when they make stupid decisions (the Noble Idiot Syndrome) that really do not make sense. At the end of the day, we want happy endings for those who deserve happiness – we want justice served, we want closures, etc. because that’s how humans are.
In many romantic dramas, plots are reused but no character is the same. They would have similar traumas but never the same, carbon-copied character. There are villains you want to kill and then there are villains you sympathize with – because you realize that humans are multilayered, complicated creatures.
 2.      Production value
Another observation I have with Korean dramas is their careful attention to details. When writers create the script, they somewhat have actors in mind to play the character. In Korean dramas, they don’t really care about love teams. In the Philippines, we produce dramas based on the hottest pairs. In Korea, they don’t give a shit about that. Dramas are produced with the intention of creating a meaningful production so actors are chosen based on whether the writers and producers think they can bring their characters to life, not because they are the hottest commodity. In some dramas, actors have to audition, but in many instances, scripts are sent to actors with potential to perfectly portray the character.
Prior to filming, writers, actors, and production staff would spend a day or two in story conferences – actors would have the opportunity to discuss with everyone how he or she thinks his/her character is like. The directors and writers would provide their input on how the characters should talk, act, etc. Actors would also take the extra mile to learn a skill or two for the characters they played. They would have dialect coaches, language instructors, etc. Writers would consult with professionals – for instance, in many medical or legal dramas, they would hire doctors or lawyers on board to verify accuracy of terms. During broadcast, you would even see the jargon on screen to simplify them for the audience. In historical dramas, you would also see the terms used (in Chinese characters) and explain them in hangul.
During filming, you’d see how the staff has placed much attention on details – from the wardrobe to the set. You would also see themes, symbols, etc. The production aspect is really like how movies are: vivid, deliberate, beautiful. Who would’ve thought red pinwheels would make me tear up?
Each drama has a particular soundtrack – can I just say that Korean dramas have the best soundtrack. Each song played in a specific scene perfectly conveys the mood and feelings of the character. I have cried so many times listening to Park Hyo Shin’s “Snow Flower” (I’m Sorry I Love You) or Ji Sun’s ”Goodbye Without Saying Goodbye) (My Name is Kim Sam Soon). On my Spotify account you would see I have played Goblin, DOTS, and CLOY OSTs countless times.
In the past, dramas are not really pre-produced (meaning script came a week or two before filming). There are dramas wherein halfway through the broadcast, they had to switch writers because the earlier writer had a falling out with the production – so you’d see that the quality suffers (story plots would go crazy lol). There are dramas wherein they had to replace the actors because of scandals or accidents. In the last 5 years however, Korean dramas have become pre-produced: meaning the dramas will be filmed 6 months-2 years before being broadcasted. I guess this aspect has contributed to the fact that many Korean dramas are already available on streaming sites.
 3.      Cultural value
Each drama gives us a slice of the Korean culture – food, drink, skincare, attraction, and history. And noraebang (karaoke). Every romcom Korean drama has to have a scene at the noraebang...or jimjilbang (sauna).
Modern and traditional Korean dramas have to feature food: Korean barbecue, stew, side dishes. LOL you name it. There’s also soju, beer, and makgeoli. BEER AND CHICKEN.
In most modern Korean dramas, makeovers are a must. You would see product placements of known Korean products: Laneige, Etude House, Nature Republic, etc. The characters would go shopping in a particular shop like The North Face. Their coffee dates would be in one of these (Caffe Bene, Dal.Komm, HOLLYS, Zoo Café, Mango Six). They would buy their cakes or bread from Paris Baguette or Tous Les Jours.
Then there are road trips – many Korean dramas would feature a particular attraction, province, or city. Who can forget Nami Island (thanks Winter Sonata) or Namsan Seoul Tower (Boys Over Flower) or Petite France (Secret Garden, My Love from the Stars)? Of course, you can’t forget Busan (Reply 1997) or Jeju (Warm and Cozy) or Gangwon-do. It is definitely a K-drama fangirl’s dream to be able to visit in one of these places so we can relive our favorite Korean drama moments.
All of Korean dramas I have seen put emphasis on family – the importance of filial piety is always highlighted. The characters are often portrayed as dutiful daughters or sons. Conflicts often ensue when the character is challenged to choose between the parents or the love of his/her life (well in most Korean dramas that’s the case lol). Many dramas portray characters who try to be the good daughter-in-law and yet nothing is ever good enough. Then there are subtle flexes on Korea as an emerging superpower as seen by drama characters (chaebols) who head conglomerates. There is always a character who is filthy rich and can afford a billionaire lifestyle. Product placements include big companies like Samsung, Hyundai, etc.
Slice-of-life dramas also depict the realities in Korean society. Because This is My First Life and Something in the Rain aptly depicted the realities of harassment in the workplace from a woman’s experience. Many Korean dramas also relay harsh realities: meritocracy in the workplace; young adults juggling multiple jobs to make ends meet, etc.; even real estate situations are featured. Often you would find characters renting a small room because that’s all they can afford. From the dramas you would also notice that Koreans are not very kind towards single mothers or orphans. Then of course, there’s the North and South Korea situation: Crash Landing on You, Doctor Stranger, Spy Myeong-Wol, Descendants of the Sun are a few dramas that discussed this theme. The Reply series is a nostalgia drama featuring families that lived through some of important events in South Korea like the Seoul Olympics (1988), Asian financial crisis (1997), Sampoong Department Store collapse (1995), and the historic World Cup (2002).
Korean historical dramas are also interesting on their own – I guess until now, the Japanese occupation of Korea is still a sensitive matter for Koreans. Many of the dramas that feature such themes always depict the resilience and resolve of Koreans as they try to fight off the enemy. Yes, the scenes are depicted artistically, and the thought lingers long after the episode is over.
In terms of marketing, the government has also been proactive. With the Korean Wave (Hallyu), Korean dramas, as well as films, music, food, etc. have become an important commodity overseas. In 2016, Korean Culture Center wrote that Descendants of the Sun was sold to 27 countries, posting a profit of over KRW 10 billion (Php 412 million). The government acknowledges the important contribution of Korean dramas in tourism. Numerous papers have already been published showing the effect of hallyu in the South Korea tourism industry.
To make the long story short:
Korean dramas have gone beyond “faux Cinderella stories with belofied whiter than white actors”.  I mean, if you want to produce a quality drama, it takes time and effort. Personally it has become a great escape from the realities I face. I do not welcome opinions that clearly spring out of snobbery and disdain for another person’s craft. Perhaps the director can look beyond the Top 10 (since that’s what he mentioned) and check out the wide selection on Netflix. Viu is also a great platform (I’ll start on World of the Married – been hearing and reading about it lol)
Hallyu did not flourish overnight, and the Korean drama industry – while a great model to cite – is also not perfect. There have been numerous cases and instances when staff are overworked or not paid long after the production is over. The #MeToo movement has also exposed some actors who have harassed fellow actors. If we want Filipino dramas to enjoy the same spotlight as that of the Korean dramas, we should be frank about the outputs we have had. We have potential, but it really is up to the decision-makers (at least from the network perspective since it’s all about profits and star value rather than quality production in the Philippines) to come up with a formula that would revitalize Filipino dramas. I can’t say the same for Filipino films because we have great films – the dramas need much work to be profitable. I mean, are we really satisfied with a few dramas being sold overseas? When will we produce dramas that are at par with our Korean chingus? If you want Filipino dramas to be streamed on Netflix or Hulu or Apple TV – maybe we can look at genres beyond police brutality or infidelity or hacienderos harboring a secret child somewhere.
Anyway, Korean dramas are awesome – and that’s the tea.

Healer
Starring Ji Chang Wook & Park Min Young, this 20 episode KDrama gave me a roller coaster feeling with mixed emotions of action, comedy and of course, romance. My friend Nikki, suggested this drama a long time ago, since she is a big fan of Ji Chang Wook, but I didn’t pay attention to it since number one, I don’t even know who Ji Chang Wook is, and number two, the title itself “Healer” gave me an impression of doctors, aiding sick people, etc. But I proved myself all wrong while getting myself swept away watching it on a marathon mode, even on a weekday, office day. Hahahaha
As I was scrolling through Viu, searching for something interesting to watch, while lying on a hot Sunday, with dysmenorrhea attacking my whole body, I remembered what Nikki kept on suggesting me to watch. It is the Healer. I searched for it, and for the first episode, I was not impressed at all. It was boring, which made me pause the video, and went to sleep since I was not able to appreciate it. When I woke up, I decided to give it a chance, saying that I would just finish one episode, and if I won’t enjoy it, I’ll message up Nikki, and say it’s not worth my time though. But before the episode ends, there was a scene that finally got my attention, the characters of Ji Chang Wook and Park Min Young finally met!! And this was the beginning of my addiction to this Kdrama.
Power. This is where the drama revolves to. Being powerful, that will give you all the fame and money, but will make you forget the most precious things in life.
Honestly, I want to skip the morals since what I really want in this drama is the coolness of Ji Chang Wook. He’s so handsome here being the “Healer”! I swear! That is why I regret not listening to my friend a long time ago! Hahahaha Of course, I also adore Park Min Young, making me realize how lucky she is, being partnered with the great actors in the industry. Lee Min Hon (City Hunter), Song Joong Ki (Sungkyungkwan Scandal), Yo Seung Ho (Remember), Park Seo Joon (What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim), and this, Ji Chang Wook (Healer). Please also do note how Seo Joong Ho is a clingy boyfriend here, which gave me just a slight turn off, well because I just like him to be his cool side of being the Healer. Hehe
This drama is indeed, superb! I might be watching it when the time comes that I miss Ji Chang Wook, but for now, I have many dramas that are lined up: Suspicious Partner & K2. All starring Ji Chang Wook oppa!!
Favorite OSTs
Eternal Love - Michael Learns to Rock
When You Hold Me Tight - Yael Meyer
What My Eyes Say - Tei
You - Ben
Because of You - Just
I Will Protect You - Ji Chang Wook
Favorite Scenes
Chae Young Shin confesses her two timing crush over the phone scene - I first saw this on FB while browsing my feed, where I first found Ji Chang Wook so cool and charming ;)
Disguise Scene - also saw it first on FB, Park Min Young is so georg here
Bus Scene - this is where I gained my interest in this show.
Rooftop Scene - right after their disguise, they had a mini date in a rooftop where Park Bong Soo confessed his feelings to his sunbae, but Chae Young Shin rejected him in a nice way, saying that there’s still no room left in her heart, of course because of Healer, which is also him. I was watching this scene while I’m in the CR of our office, during CR break. The feeeels.
Telephone Booth Scene - urgh, this scene is so superb huhu

Three Men In A Bar Still Open by Daniel Arrhakis (2022)
Before going home, he stopped by the "Chapel" as he used to call the small bar that was located in a basement on a nearby block. Bar 103, which corresponded to the number of the door, was the perfect place for a last drink but also to confess secrets, politics, football and those supposed love conquests that would make any goddess jealous. Daily echoes that continue with a beer in hand until silence reigns or the owner invites you to go out.
The diffused light mixed with the almost sensual paths of tobacco smoke while the smells of some snacks whetted the appetite for a moment well spent. Amidst lights and shadows, he spotted his friend Jorge, or the "Artist" as everyone called him, accompanied perhaps by a new young friend.  Among real canvases and drunken inspirations, he always appeared from time to time with new models that he conquered with more intimate perspectives that could scandalize more critical souls. It was never the case for him, she always saw Jorge beyond the impressions and emotional brushstrokes of his so-called different life. A beer awaited him in a good chat with friends at the end of the night... at the beginning of a new old day.
___________________________________________________

JUSTIFICATIVA: TW: Menção a xenofobia.
