TLDR: The Dark Future
The Dark Future was a lorebook introduced in the Beyond Light expansion. It covers some of the anguise The Exo Stranger faced in the future she has returned from, the one we need to prevent. Here is the shortened version of the pages, so you can know what we were fighting to prevent in Beyond Light!
• Somewhere along the way, Humanity lost, an event called The Bombardment happened (assumedly House Salvation hit us using the warsat network) and Savathûn as well as the forces of Darkness are at large. The Traveler left us, we were left in ruins.
• Elsie Bray, also known as the Exo Stranger, is found by her sister Ana Bray, who is now lightless. Ana wants Elsie to teach her Stasis, Elsie doesn't want to in order to keep her safe. Ana says that with Stasis and what remains of Rasputin, they can beat Savathûn, and Elsie reluctantly agrees.
• They go to the Deep Stone Crypt, still intact, albeit sieged by House Salvation, to make an Exo Frame for Rasputin. Ana sympathizes with Clovis Bray for a moment, and they find the corpse of The Drifter¹ in the production room. After conversing about what Clovis has done, the exo frame emerges and Rasputin is reborn.
• Elsie and Ana return to a demolished Last City, and they argue about their past as a family. Zavala finds them and holds them at gunpoint, he is lightless, deteriorating, and missing a leg. Ana asks Zavala if Ikora is here, and Zavala responds by telling them that she's been buried underneath the Tower. Zavala is hopeless, it's heartbreaking, he says that whatever Ana has planned it will get her killed, and whatever she's looking for at the City isn't here. It is revealed that in this timeline, Elsie never helped us destroy the Black Heart³, and it corrupted Guardians. Zavala is impressed that they have Rasputin, but he reveals a large twist, that Savathûn, The Witch Queen, is pawn to another, that being Eris Morn.
• Rasputin finds the blueprints for Ghaul's Traveler cage in the Almighty's computers, and Zavala finally agrees to assist. Rasputin can track the Traveler, but they need numbers in order to build the Traveler's snare to bring it back, and Zavala points to one Mara Sov.
• On their space-voyage to find Mara Sov, Ana asks for Stasis again, and Elsie once again turns her down. Zavala overhears that Elsie is using Stasis and asks her to consider that it is not for the better to control a power alone, and she should consider what her sister asks of her. They finally make it to Mara Sov's new headquarters, aboard the Leviathan.
• Mara has Eliksni² and Cabal working alongside her Awoken, and Ana asks about the Vex. Mara answers, she says that Eris holds them under her control, they are trapped within time itself until summoned. Zavala and Mara has a conversation about how they do not trust Ana, and they soon capture the Traveler.
• Elsie asks Zavala about the conversation he had with Mara, Zavala confirms that she doesn't trust Ana, and her previous conversation with Elsie about her was to test her.
• They make landing on the moon and fight off Hive and Dark Guardian alike, and Zavala begins to siphon Light from the traveller as Ghaul did during the Red War. He advanced to the Scarlett Keep to kill Savathûn. Eris summons her Techeun turncoats that are defeated by the Warmind, but there's been a liar. Eris thanks Ana for bringing all of her enemies to one place, and with that, Ana stabs the Awoken Queen in the chest. Elsie fights Ana, and ends up killing her, but Eris has won, and the Traveller as a last resort encases all in it's light.
• When the Light fades, Elsie is back in time, she is in The Tower on the day that Cayde-6 is appointed Hunter Vanguard all those years ago. She laments about this scene, she's tired of seeing it over and over again, this clearly isn't the first time the Light has lost. Elsie believes she is being tormented, but makes a vow to save her sister.
¹ It is assumed that the Drifter did something big in this timeline. In ours Drifter and Ana don't have much of a connection, but Ana goes as far to say that Drifter got what he deserved. We cannot trust Ana as she is corrupted, so we do not know if the Drifter acted for good or for evil.
² For those who don't know, the true name of the Fallen is the Eliksni. The term "Fallen" is somewhat of an attack, saying that they have "fallen" from grace because of the Whirlwind.
³ We now know that the Black Heart was created as a replica of the Veil with Lightfall, this fact could imply something chilling about the Veil.

Marvel’s Black Widow: MCU Easter Eggs and References Guide
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
This article contains Black Widow spoilers. We have a spoiler-free review here.
The MCU is finally back on the big screen! Marvel’s Black Widow was supposed to be the official kickoff of Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but then the pandemic happened, it got bounced around the release calendar, and Disney managed to release three MCU TV shows before Natasha got to take her curtain call on the big screen.
But that’s thankfully behind us, and Black Widow delivers terrific blockbuster action in the mighty Marvel manner. And you know what that means! Let’s try and spot all the cool MCU references and Marvel Comics Easter eggs in Black Widow.
The Prologue
Setting this prologue in 1995 gives us the approximate age of Natasha. If she’s supposed to be about 11 or 12 here, that conveniently makes the character the same age as Scarlett Johannsson, who was born in 1984.
The general premise of Natasha’s childhood, in which she was the daughter of two Russian spies is highly similar to that of the FX series The Americans.
This seems to be the late summer of 1995, which puts it roughly around when Captain Marvel was taking place (the official word on that is 1995, but little details in it, like Stan Lee reading a Mallrats screenplay could place it in 1994).
Young Natasha is played by Ever Anderson – the daughter of actress Milla Jovovich and Event Horizon director Paul W. S. Anderson. You will not be able to unsee her resemblance to Milla.
The first song choice in the movie is young Yelena’s fixation on Don McLean’s fixation on “American Pie,” a song about (among other things) the death of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and “The Big Bopper” J.P. Richardson. That being said, “American Pie” is about a larger loss of innocence, a theme that weighs heavily throughout this film.
Before Alexei turns the radio off to play “American Pie”, the station is set to 105.1 FM. This is WQXK, a country station based in Salem, Ohio that serves the Youngstown market. Natasha and Yelena’s American home is likely based in Eastern Ohio.
There’s an episode of DuckTales playing on TV in the background while they have dinner. We can’t tell what episode it is, but DuckTales ruled, and the new series was even better. And hey, we get some payoff later in the movie when they play an aircraft crash for laughs while having everyone just casually walk it off.
Alexei was working undercover in the US at the North Institute, which he burned to the ground before making his escape. In Black Widow Vol 3 #1, Natasha decided to retire to Arizona but she and other Red Room victims were hounded by the North Institute. Spurred to investigate the situation, Natasha returned to Russia where she discovered much of the terrible truth behind her past Red Room manipulation. This was a story that also featured Yelena (and Daredevil, believe it or not).
There’s definitely an early SHIELD logo on the trucks chasing the family to the very end there.
The plane number is 258. In Incredible Hulk #258, we get the first appearance of the Soviet Super-Soldiers (later named the Winter Guard), a communist superhero team created for the sake of rivaling the Avengers. The original lineup was Ursa Major (more on him in a minute), Darkstar, Vanguard, and the fifth Crimson Dynamo (more on this, too). Over time, Red Guardian joined their ranks, though it was Josef Petkus and not Alexei Shostakov.
This is a perfect cold open, the kind that James Bond movies excelled at, and it’s far from the only Bond parallel we’ll get in the film.
The Opening Credits
There’s all kinds of stuff happening in the opening credits, including the film’s villain Dreykov being inserted into photos with various world leaders, including President Bill Clinton, President George W. Bush’s Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, and others. The Red Room’s influence knows no national boundaries, it seems.
The overall effect is to imply that Dreykov and the Widows have been putting their fingers on the scale for quite some time.
It’s also a nice touch that many of the “news broadcasts” we see here are from MCU staple WHIH.
There’s a shot of some vials with blue liquid, which allude to the Red Room’s attempt to create Captain America-esque super soldiers, which they succeeded with to some degree with the Red Guardian, but also makes us wonder if they tried enhancing any earlier Widows.
Smells Like Teen Spirit
The opening credits are set to a version of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Malia J. You may have heard her covers of Seal’s “Crazy” and Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth” in trailers for shows like Bloodlines and The Handmaid’s Tale.
We wrote more about the Black Widow version of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” here.
When Does Black Widow Take Place?
This movie takes place in 2016, shortly after the events of Captain America: Civil War. General “Thunderbolt” Ross (William Hurt) is here to remind us all that Natasha is still in trouble with the government.
What’s kind of neat about this is that it’s the first Marvel “prequel” that feels like it is designed to be watched in its chronological sequence (minus that post-credits scene, of course). Captain America: The First Avenger makes more sense as a flashback interlude between Thor and The Avengers, while Captain Marvel makes more sense as a breather between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. But Black Widow feels like it should be watched right after Civil War.
Thunderbolt Ross
Natasha brings up Ross having his second triple bypass. In Captain America: Civil War, Ross talks about how he had his first heart attack while playing golf and it gave him perspective and convinced him to retire from the US Army. It seems chasing down Cap’s allies hasn’t been so good for his health.
Red Guardian
We know that Alexei has been active as Red Guardian since at least 1983 or 1984 based on the tales of fighting Captain America he tells while in jail. He was apparently sent to the USA for undercover work in 1992, and then imprisoned a few years after their 1995 escape back to Russia.
Red Guardian’s knuckle tattoos say “Karl Marx” which is kind of adorable but…shouldn’t they be in Cyrillic/Russian characters and not Latin/English? Is this to troll his capitalist opponents so they can read them as he beats their asses?
Red says he fought Captain America in 1983 or 1984. The simplest explanation is that he’s lying but…what if he isn’t?
Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt and say that he’s telling the truth and there really was yet another secret Captain America active in the ‘80s. Now that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is done, we know that there was at least one “replacement Cap” and the comics indicate there were others. Or maybe it’s just Steve in the timestream…maybe we’ll find out one day, but we wrote much more about some possibilities for this here.
Ursa
Red Guardian breaks the arm of a man named Ursa… Ursa Major (Mikhail Ursus) is the name of another Russian superhero in Marvel Comics, whose mutant power caused him to turn into a literal talking bear. He became a staple member of the Soviet Super Soldiers/Winter Guard along with a Red Guardian. While the movie doesn’t depict him like the comics, Red Guardian does joke about him being a bear.
Taskmaster
This is a very different version of Taskmaster than the one we got in the comics. Marvel Comics Taskmaster has “photographic reflexes” and is a man named Anthony Masters. Here, in addition to the new gender (Dreykov’s daughter is named “Antonia” as a nod to the comics character), Taskmaster is cybernetically enhanced to make those “photographic reflexes a little easier.
There is precedent for a female Taskmaster. The series Deadpool MAX reimagined Deadpool in a cynical, dark, and very adult (albeit absurd and humorous) way. This lent itself to Deadpool-adjacent characters. Taskmaster was depicted as a woman roughly in her ‘50s who trained Deadpool and warped his mind.
There’s also Finesse, a member of Avengers Academy, whose powers are so similar to Taskmaster that she believes him to be her biological father. Unfortunately, due to memory problems, Taskmaster doesn’t know for sure and refuses to offer any DNA to find out the answer.
In the course of Taskmaster’s action scenes, we see her mimic a number of Marvel heroes, with a particular focus on those who played a part in the recent (by this movie’s timeline) Captain America: Civil War including Hawkeye, Captain America, Black Panther, and even Natasha.
We have more on Taskmaster here.
Who is Mason?
Rick Mason first appeared in his own 1989 graphic novel called Rick Mason: The Agent. Mason was a SHIELD agent mostly remembered for being the son of Phineas Mason, the Tinkerer. Granted, the Tinkerer we saw in Spider-Man: Homecoming isn’t nearly old enough to be Rick’s father in the movies and he looks nothing like him, so I wouldn’t expect any secret connection.
In the comics, Rick was practically forgotten about and killed off-panel. His son was one of the victims of Nitro’s explosion in Stamford, Connecticut from the beginning of the Marvel Comics version of Civil War.
Melina Vostokoff
The Melina Vostokoff of the MCU is pretty different from the one in Marvel Comics (who created by Ralph Macchio and George Perez in 1983). There, she was known as (we shit you not) Iron Maiden, and she was at least a former Widow-esque agent as she is here in the film.
Yelena Belova
Yelena and Natasha’s first meeting being over a bio-weapon/agent is very faintly similar to Yelena’s proper introduction in the comics, a 1999 Black Widow comics story where they were explicitly fighting over a bioweapon, not a “mind control antidote” as we see in this film.
The “face swap” trick that Natasha and Melina pull in the film’s final act also has the faintest of echoes of another early Yelena story, where Natasha “swapped faces” with Yelena to try and break her mind and get her on the side of the angels.
What Happened in Budapest?
“You and I remember Budapest very differently,” Clint Barton famously told Natasha in The Avengers during the Battle of New York. But now we know what went down…
Basically, Taskmaster’s origin story is tied to Natasha’s superhero origin. To fully defect from the Red Room and go to work for SHIELD, Natasha had to assassinate Dreykov…which meant the collateral damage of Antonia.
Of course, that led to Clint and Nat getting hounded by Red Room agents, which led to them hiding out for days together.
And before that, they were in that safe house apartment that was currently occupied by Yelena, hence the arrow damage to the walls.
Crimson Dynamo
Yelena (probably on purpose) refers to Alexei’s superheroic days as when he was “the Crimson Dynamo.” Sure, this is cute, but there really was a Crimson Dynamo in Marvel Comics! Crimson Dynamo is primarily an Iron Man villain, lots of different Russian agents have worn the Crimson Dynamo armor. It…didn’t end well for any of them.
The original Crimson Dynamo was Anton Vanko, otherwise known as the old man dying in the beginning of Iron Man 2. Although his son was known as Whiplash, Ivan Vanko was more of a cross between Whiplash and Crimson Dynamo. In the comics, “Ivan” was an alias Anton used.
We’re gonna choose to believe that Yelena isn’t just making this name up and that the Russians really did have an armored hero called the Crimson Dynamo, and if we’re lucky we’ll get to see him in a flashback of some future MCU project. After all, there’s that Armor Wars series on the way…
Also, there’s one thing that Crimson Dynamo has over the Red Guardian: he was immortalized in the lyrics of a song by a member of The Beatles. Paul McCartney and Wings have a tune called “Magneto and Titanium Man” which involves “a robbery” where “the Crimson Dynamo came along for the ride.” It’s great, and it’s on Wings Venus & Mars album.
Thor
Yelena’s line about how a “god from space” doesn’t “need to take an ibuprofen” after a fight is kinda priceless.
Mutants in the MCU
Dreykov tells Natasha that they were searching for the “genetic potential in infants.” Sure, this could mean anything like how athletic someone might grow up to be, but is there a chance they could also have been searching for a mysterious x-factor in a baby’s DNA?
James Bond
Natasha is watching one of the lesser-regarded Bond flicks, Moonraker. Of course, she still knows every word.
Dreykov gets a classic “Bond villain monologue” wherein a baddie spells out his plans for world domination before a hero who he surely thinks is either neutralized or could be swayed to their cause.
Antonia/Taskmaster is a Bond Girl! Olga Kurylenko played Camille Montes, a Bolivian agent with a vendetta in Quantum of Solace.
Remnants of the Red Room
Black Widow was written by Eric Pearson, who also wrote Thor: Ragnarok.
So… Natasha probably couldn’t taste that peanut butter and jelly sandwich from Endgame, right? That’s too bad.
It doesn’t seem that “Fanny Longbottom” is a thing from Marvel Comics, but as Mason points out it is most certainly a real name. Also, Yelena’s dog in the post-credits scene is named “Fanny.”
We get an explanation for Natasha’s blonde look in Infinity War here, as Mason gave her the hair dye. But the way it’s presented here feels slightly like a sisterly tribute to Yelena, which is really sweet.
Natasha makes a crack about “the cavalry” as Ross’ troops close in, but folks hoping that’s an Agents of SHIELD reference are probably going to be sorely disappointed.
Dreykov’s pheromone trick that he has implanted in the Widows (and Natasha in particular) leads to this scene playing out like when RoboCop tries to arrest Dick Jones in the classic 1987 film.
“Thank you for your cooperation,” Natasha tells Dreykov with a smirk after getting him to monologue his evil plans. This is as close as we get to a Black Widow catchphrase – she also ended a veiled interrogation with Loki using the exact same words in The Avengers.
The Post-Credits Scene
Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfuss) is back after her appearances in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. If we had to hazard a guess, she’s putting together a team of “Dark Avengers” or “Thunderbolts” for the MCU.
Florence Pugh is indeed confirmed to appear in the upcoming Disney+ Hawkeye series, as well.
We went into much more detail about what the post-credits scene means for the future of the MCU right here.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });

Be careful about having high expectations for Gen Lock. The series is created by Rooster Teeth Productions, who tend be to hit and miss. They created great series like Camp Camp, but they also created RWBY, which has a rep for having terrible writing in the later seasons. Characters are unlikable or Mary Sues; the plot is poorly structured and it made a lot of questionable choices. At this point, it could be either or. Only time will tell if it's the next Camp Camp or RWBY.
and
“I would be careful about having high expectations for Gen Lock if I were you. Gen Lock is created by Roaster Teeth Productions, who are also the creators of RWBY. That series went down hill after the 3rd season. Granted some of it had to do with the creator dying, but the writing dipped in quality. After watching the first and second ep, it reminds me a lot of VLD, including the humour. Reviewers said it didn’t dive into character motivation or any of the world building by the 5 ep point.”
Hi Anon, thank you for the Asks!
Given the wording of both of these, I assume they are both from you.
I’m going to try to reign in my salt here, but you happened to hit more than a few buttons with your Ask. Gonna keep this as brief as I can to focus on the core of my answer. I promise I’m not grumpy.
The opening sentence in both of these Asks does not come across well. I can give the benefit of the doubt b/c this is the Internet, but uh…yeah.
RWBY continues to enjoy great popularity and comes up frequently on my dash. I’ve never seen it, it’s definitely not my thing, but it’s still selling to someone, and my VLD mutuals that love it are still talking it up so I’m glad that they have another show to entertain them. I see merch everywhere, it’s got a Japanese dub and a manga adaptation and that’s pretty damn good for a web cartoon that came out of the U.S. Must not be that terrible as whole to merit all of that.
“Mary Sue” is a phrase that means absolutely nothing because everyone overuses it to mean any number of things about competent and powerful female characters, and most of them are incredibly subjective, and rarely ever applied to male characters who meet the same kinds of subjective goal-post shifting criteria.
Perhaps gen:LOCK will simply be the “first gen:LOCK” and not the “next anything.”
I didn’t find the humor in gen:LOCK to be like VLD at all.
Reviewers can eat my asshole.
And on that note:
Not every story benefits from a deep dive, or even a superficial exploration of character motivation or world-building.
Such things are very genre and plot dependent, and the perception of such is subjective.
Some of the greatest short stories, or even long-form novels don’t even bother with much of either if they are not necessary to advance the plot. Not everything needs to be Lord of the Rings or Ulysses.
Who had better “character motivation”, Frodo Baggins from the LotR trilogy or Ripely from Alien? What would “better” even mean for either of those genres? LotR and Alien are worlds apart, and yet, at the end of the day, the protagonists are fighting for survival against an unspeakable horror. The “journey” of their survival differs greatly, and those journeys are the point, the character motivations are really minimal and don’t require a lot of exploration.
Frodo’s character motivation can be summed up as: “save the fucking Shire by destroying a cursed evil ring” and a little bit of “Uncle Bilbo ruined me for the simple Hobbit life with his crazy stories.” While Ripley’s motivation is: “kill the xenomorphs before they kill me and my cat.” That’s it. Don’t even need in-character exposition or a flashback to describe Ripley’s. The genre hands it to you on a blood-soaked silver platter.
I don’t know what those reviewers were watching but the “character motivation” of the main characters that I saw in the pilot episode alone was pretty fucking obvious: HOLD THE LINE in a dystopian world were “freedom” hangs by a thread. They are trying to survive. That’s all it needs to be.
I don’t care why they joined the Vanguard. I have plenty of friends and family within various armed forces and their motivations range from complex to simple, but most of them are a variation on “I want to serve my country and my people.” That’s it, and that’s okay.
Additionally, Julian Chase’s backstory and motivation was made clear in the first 10 minutes through the positioning of him before the wall with his dead father’s memorial flag, and the conversation between the three most important people in his life: mother, sister, and fellow comrade-soldier/girlfriend (Miranda, great symbolism by the way in that name).
That pilot episode is Julian’s “super hero/science fiction origin story”. His Big Damn Hero moment is fueled by his “character motivation” to protect his loved ones, and inspired by the verses from his dead hero father’s favorite song: “Let the Good Times Roll.”
Any hyper-critical reviewer that missed that is full of shit.
And those verses?
“You only live once / But when you’re dead you’re gone / So let the good times roll”
That was clever and poignant foreshadowing, b/c GENRE. It also wasn’t super deep…and it didn’t have to be. It only needed to connect the threads of Julian’s introduction, who he is, something special that he shares with his mother, father, and girlfriend, and what his role will be in the show, and the nature of his being from here on out.
At the bare minimum, someone in the writers’ room is aware (even if only in passing) of the some of the most enduring questions that science-fiction (especially cyberpunk) has asked and navel-gazed over regarding the role of technology in extending human life, and what exactly defines “life” when one has left the meat-space. I’m not expecting gen:LOCK to be an exploration into the ethics and details of transhumanism/post-humanism/singularity philosophies and futurist dreams for humanity. It doesn’t have to be. They’ve already touched on the concepts and anyone who loves that sort of thing will notice.
My expectations for gen:LOCK are that—at worst—it will be as entertaining and to-the-point as the GI Joe cartoon in the 80s. I enjoyed GI Joe (pro-military propaganda aside), it was a regular thing for me to make the effort to watch. I didn’t love it like I did The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers, or Robotech, or Voltron DotU, or Silverhawks, or Jem and the Holograms, but it was still fun and entertaining and it still is.
GI Joe didn’t waste time with a full exploration of Cobra Commander’s backstory or his motivations, nor did it do so with most of the Joes. The basics were all that was needed. GI Joe wasn’t about complexity and it didn’t need to be in order to tell an entertaining story while selling toys. Yes, sometimes you’d get some really interesting episodes that added dimension in between the more obvious filler. Shit, it took like 50+ episodes to get to a Destro-focused episode. I certainly wasn’t watching GI Joe for character motivations and world-building. I was watching because nearly every character had an interesting design and they all did unique things, and Cobra Commander was hilarious. I watched to see what they would come up with next.
Did I really need a compelling story behind Zartan, Zandar, and Zarana? Nope. They were fun villains that gave the heroes hell and spoke with shitty Australian accents. In the 80s, the Aussie accent was all the rage for edgy characters (oh Stingray…).
Do people remember anything about Scarlett other than she was the hot redhead?
I loved Scarlett, she was my She-Ra, and one of the main reasons why I watched GI Joe. But only the most hardcore GI Joe fans remember her stats and abilities. She was actually one of the most highly qualified and skilled Joes. From Scarlett’s Wikipedia article:
“Her primary specialty for the team is counter intelligence. Scarlett is additionally skilled in martial arts and acrobatics. She started training at age 9 with her father and three brothers, who were all instructors, and she earned her first black belt at age 15. Scarlett also graduated summa cum laude, and passed her Bar Exams to practice law, before moving into the military. She graduated from Advanced Infantry Training and Ranger School, and received special education in Covert Ops School, Marine Sniper School, Special Air Service School, and Marine Tae Kwon Do Symposium. Although she is as adept with standard weapons as any of her comrades, her weapon of choice is the XK-1 power crossbow, which fires various bolts with specialized functions. Scarlett is also a qualified expert with the M-14, M-16, M1911A1 Auto Pistol, M79 grenade launcher, M-3A1, M-700 Remington sniper rifle, MAC-10, throwing stars, garotte and KA-BAR (Combat Knife)”
Wow. Beautiful and striking appearance. High intelligence. Great martial prowess. Top shelf military training. What a goddamned Mary Sue.
So, if you’re still with me Anon, my point is that if gen:LOCK can be a “good enough” futuristic-cyberpunk-ish version of GI Joe that gives me fun and interesting-but-not-complex characters in command of infantry mechs, configurable jets, and a color coordinated team of save-the-day-big-damn-hero-style mecha who fight against a sinister force that has weaponized nanotech and colossal mechas that look like War of the Worlds meets Eldritch Horrors then I’ll be pretty fucking happy with it. The bar ain’t exactly high here.

Faeratil Samuels - A Destiny Fanfic (part 7)
@morticia-4 I finally had a chance to update again!! This part has a slight allusion to my irl ex-husband’s hunter, Cassus Shepard, who I am in the process of editing out.
It’s been a few days since I went on my date with Cayde. Kadi was so excited when I told her what had happened. She asks me every day if I like him enough to go out with him again. I’m not sure if she means romantically or just a slight interest, but I also haven’t told her that I talk to Cayde on a regular basis now. She would blow a bulb with excitement.
I walk around the front of the Tower waiting for her to show up for our usual break time gossip. She’s already twenty minutes late. Maybe she’s out of commission this morning? I think to myself. I sit down on the railing over the stairs leading to the Vanguard meeting room and start cleaning out my Khvostov, a routine check I run whenever I’m bored.
I see an Exo Hunter just returning from outside the wall run down the steps. I take note of the Ace of Spades at his hip. I only know one other Hunter who can carry an Ace of Spades. He must know Cayde. I tell Crusoe to make note of the Hunter so I can ask Cayde about him later. “His name is Cassus Shepard,” Crusoe informs me. “In case you were wondering.”
I hop off my perch, intending to follow him and eavesdrop, but am stopped by Eris Morn begging me to take care of the Hive threat and Oryx. She’s one of Cayde’s friends, but she kind of creeps me out. I tell her I’ll make the Hive my next mission then hurry further down the steps.
“FAE!” I forgot Shaxx was down here. “Have you come to fight in the Crucible today?” he asks, way too excited in my opinion.
“I was actually looking for Ikora, but maybe next week?” I reply, hoping he’ll accept it and move on. I can see Cayde talking to “Cassus” from the corner of my eye, but I can’t hear what they’re saying.
“Guardian, you must prepare for battle outside the training rooms and inside the Crucible if you ever hope to rise to your most glorious. I’ll be expecting you next week!” Shaxx booms, hitting his fist on the table.
“I’ll be there,” I lie, “but I have to talk to Ikora now.” I make a quick escape and slip into the meeting room undetected.
I weave through the other guardians milling about to get a good eavesdropping spot when I see “Cassus” walk back out. Damn, I think. “Can I help you, Faerie?” I hear Cayde ask from behind me. I jump and turn to face him.
“Why do you keep doing that? You know I hate people sneaking up on me,” I say, playfully swatting his arm. I decide not to ask about the other Hunter yet. “Have you seen Kadi?” I ask, trying to cover my tracks.
“Kadi 55-30? The AI you always talk to?” he asks.
“Yeah. I haven’t seen her at all today, and I wonder if maybe she malfunctioned or something and needs help.”
Cayde turns to his terminal and asks for Kadi’s whereabouts. “Looks like she’s graduating today. Or whatever it’s called when they finish programming the post office AIs,” he says, turning back to me and grabbing my hand. “Let’s go watch before Ikora and Zavala notice I’m gone.” He drags me out of the meeting room and down a hallway I’ve never actually explored before.
“Um, Cayde? Do you know where we’re going?”
He stops and looks around. In a hushed tone he says, “I don’t actually think it would be that exciting to watch Kadi get her badge….thing, but I couldn’t stand listening to Ikora talk about how great Osiris and Rasputin used to be for the fifteenth time today. So… I thought maybe we could go somewhere private. I do have a surprise that I wanted to show you because I think you’ll appreciate it.”
“Is it ascendent asparagus? Oh I just love when my food is exposed to alien rituals,” I say sarcastically.
“You said yourself it was worth a shot to see what would happen. Even if you were drunk,” Cayde says defensively. I laugh a little and then notice he’s still holding my hand.
“So… uh, what was it you did want to show me?”
“Come with me. I’m so excited to show you. And you know I only find awesome stuff so this is definitely awesome.”
He pulls me through a series of hallways I’m pretty sure are for maintenance to avoid being seen until we arrive at the back door to his apartment. He lets go of my hand and walks inside. I haven’t been here since that night so I hesitate at the door. “Come on in, Faerie. Don’t worry, so long as you don’t make a mess you won’t have to wear one of my cloaks again.”
I walk inside and see an old movie projector like the kind I used to read about when I was a kid. Apparently people would stream movies on discs and connect it to the projector to watch on their walls. I told Cayde before that I’ve always wanted to see what movies were like before my first birth, but I didn’t know he’d actually find a way.
He gestures to the couch for me to sit down. “Well, Faerie, what do you think?”
I sit down and stare at the projector for a moment. “How did you find this?” I ask.
“Oh just a little digging, a quick trip on Eris’s ship, and some awesome Cayde stuff,” he says, leaning on the back of the couch next to my head. “But that’s not even the best part.” He puts an old disc in what I assume was a movie player from way back when and turns on the projector. The wall lights up and music starts playing.
Cayde comes and sits next to me, his arm resting behind me, and says, “I found a movie.” I lean into him and give a little hug before looking back at his face and thanking him.
The movie starts and it catches me off guard at first because it’s black and white. Then the title comes up — ‘Gone With the Wind’.
Cayde and I are both glued to the projection, so I barely notice when he scoots closer and puts his arm around my waist. We sit like that for a while until “Intermission” goes across the screen. I’d heard that intermissions were long, so I turn to Cayde. “I’m glad you found this. Thank you,” I say moving in closer until I can rest my head on his shoulder.
“You should wear a dress like that,” he says. “You would look pretty. Not that you aren’t pretty now, I mean you are pretty It would add to the pretty. I think I’ll shut up now.”
I laugh and push myself up high enough to kiss his cheek and say, “I know what you mean, Cayde.”
“Well how ‘bout that?” he mutters to himself, clearly pleased with my reaction.
The show resumes and we once again lose ourselves in the lives of Rhett Butler and Scarlett O’Hara. At the end when Rhett turns to Scarlett and says, “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn,” I feel Cayde pulling my chin up to face him. I start to get a little nervous and whisper, “But I’m human and you’re an Exo…”
Cayde looks me straight in the eyes and whispers back, “Frankly, Faerie, I don’t give a damn either.” I close my eyes and kiss Cayde. It’s strange not feeling human lips on mine, but I haven’t felt this relaxed since Samuels. Maybe Kadi was right about Cayde and I after all.
We break apart as the movie ends, and he asks me to stay the night. I shyly agree, not knowing if he has anything else planned, but am surprisingly relieved when he pulls me into his bed and just holds onto me, lightly placing kisses on my forehead whenever it’s close enough. I hear him whisper, “Thank you, Faerie,” before I drift off to sleep.

Bounty: Chapter One
Plot: Olivia Vangard gets introduced to the South Side Serpents as FP Jones, the King, orders them to protect her at all costs, no questions asked. Evelyn Ng copes with the guilt of allowing Olivia to fall into this position and wonders if she can keep the Whitticker Agency and Quinton away from her before its too late.
Words: 1,788 Cast // Story Summary // Introduction
                                             CHAPTER ONE
Toni rolls her eyes once more at Fangs and Sweet Pea, the two of them being as silly as ever but completely ignoring the burning bonfire in the middle. “If either of you get burned, I’m not calling 911, instead, I’m just going to stand over you saying ‘I told you so.’” Toni retorts, earning a glare from the two boys. “Don’t look at me like that, you know it’s true.”
“Nice to see where your loyalty lies.” Sweet Pea jokingly bites back, retreating to the battered sofa, letting out a loud sigh as he rests his head back. “Anyone want to head out? It’s starting to get boring here.”
“Not so fast there, Sweet Pea.” FP interjects, all the present Serpents snapping their heads up his way all sporting the same confused and clueless look as to what he is doing here and, to add to the mystery, who on earth is the battered and bruised female behind him? “I came here to introduce you to Scarlett Maine. You all are to protect her at all costs, watch her back, treat her like one of our own.” Jughead opens his mouth and holds up a finger, only for his father to interrupt. “No questions asked. It’s an order.” FP turns to Olivia, whispering to her. “If they cause you any trouble, don’t hesitate to call me.” He pats her on the back and with one last warning look, FP was off.
Olivia looks at everyone once, turning back to check that FP was out of sight, before addressing the group. “Regardless of what he says, I do not need any of your help to protect myself.” Clearer than before, Toni and the gang have front row seats to the true damage scattered all over Olivia. A large bandage wrapped around her abdomen, her eye covered with bandages and a patch, stitches and bruises decorating her arms and legs. Whatever it is that Olivia has gone through, neither of them can ever fathom it ot even begin to articulate whatever hell she endured. Their faces say it all, bewilderment that she is standing here before them despite the state she is in. Olivia rolls her eye, turning to head back but Toni gets up from her spot, looking up at the girl, worried and drenched in concern.
“I don’t know your situation, or what or who did this to you but I’m just as human as anybody and I will not let you go out like this alone.” Toni smiles softly as she sighs. “I’ll introduce you to everyone.” Olivia nods as she follows Toni back, she tries to avert her gaze elsewhere, everyone still looking at her like she’s some kind of freak. “That incredibly tall guy with the neck tattoo is, Sweet Pea. Next to him is Fangs Fogarty. Then, over there in the corner is Jughead, FP’s son and I am Toni.” Toni reaches out her hand, which Olivia painfully shakes.
“Look, I don't mean to rain on your parade. None of this was my choice. It’s just….” Olivia sighs. “...my job requires me to hide away for a few and my boss sent me here to be protected under you guys. And I know near to nothing about this town or anything.” Toni carefully holds Olivia’s hand.
“Well, whatever it is, we’re here to help. Right guys?” Everyone nods. “There’s one thing that you have to know about us, about the Serpents. We aren’t as horrible as people have taken us to be. We treat each other like family, we are family. And we’d die for each other. We take loyalty far more serious than anyone else but also, most of us have gone through the initiation and I would’ve known if new meat was coming in.” Toni chuckles. “What I’m trying to say is, people will be a little hostile at first. You’re an outsider coming in out of the blue and even though our king expects us to protect you, he said no questions asked. People are going to ask questions and people are going to try and rile you up but I’ve got your back. You seem like you’ve been through enough hell as it is.”
“Thank you.” Olivia sits down carefully on the sofa, next to Sweet Pea, looking around at the people she’s going to be staying with for an indefinite amount of time. “So, what do you guys usually do? I’m not used to being….civil. I guess you can call it that. I haven’t lived a ‘normal’ life in a while.” Sweet Pea raises his eyebrow her way. “What? You can’t say for much either, Sweet Pea. Not many kids join gangs at young ages, we’re all a little unusual in one way.”
“Well…” Toni sits up from her bike. “...we’re all attending a local college. Surprising, I know. It’s barely heard of for anyone in the Serpents to be able to get a proper education. When we were 16, they shut down our school South Side High and we merged with Riverdale. Through there we finally got the education we needed, straightened us out. I’m studying Cosmetology.”
“Marine Biology.” Sweet Pea chimes in.
“Veterinarian.” Fangs pops up.
“What do you want to study?” Toni questions, sitting back down on her bike and crossing her arms. All eyes were now back onto Olivia, and as uncomfortable as it is being the centre of attention for her, she’s going to have to get used to it.
“Maybe Criminology.” Olivia shrugs her shoulders. “Or maybe Biology of sorts. I’ve always been a more technical kind of person. I like those kind of subjects. I used to study forensic science but then I got a job and this job was more down my alley.” She smiles softly getting up to stretch a little. “Well, I’m going to head home. I have to switch out my bandages. It’s been great meeting you all. I’ll see you around.” Everyone waves her off as they watch Olivia drive away.
“What if she’s a spy?” Fangs comments, Sweet Pea nudges him and rolls his eyes at the sheer ridiculousness in his imagination. “What? Does it not make sense? The damage to her body, the fact that she won’t tell us what her job is and, don’t forget, FP won’t let us ask anything about her. Smells to me like someone is in some business she shouldn’t be in”
“And neither should you.” Toni fights back. “Whatever it is she’s got herself in, it’s enough for now. We’re going to protect her and if she’s ready to tell us what it is we’re protecting her from, then we’ll let her. But seriously, stop looking at her like she’s a broken down puppy. It’s clearly making her feel uncomfortable. Now, let’s go to Pops. Sweets, you owe me a burger from last time, alright?” Sweet Pea groans as the four of them mount their respective bikes and drive off to the iconic diner.
Vanguards Intelligence Agency
Unknown Location
Vincent walks into the elevator and nervously taps his foot, holding onto the locked box carefully. The nerves in his stomach only swishing around more as the elevator slowly moves up, the small sound jumping at his ears with each floor he passes until eventually, he reaches the top floor. As the doors open, two guards greet him and Vincent shows off his pass. Neither of the guards speak as they escort him to Commander Evelyn’s office, opening the door for him. “I don’t care what you do but we’ve got to be on high alert. Olivia’s stint has left Whitticker on the edge.” Evelyn looks up from her desk and holds up a finger. “I’ll call you back, but mark my words.” She hangs up on the phone and motions for Vincent to come closer. “Please tell me you managed to save the documents.”
“I did. And I’ve sealed them safely inside this box. Props to Olivia, she’s saved our asses, again.” Vincent hands the box over.
“At what cost?” Evelyn places the box under her desk as she picks up a photograph, a young Olivia and her father stand side by side at the Vanguards entrance. “When I took over, after Cormac’s disappearance, I promised that I’d take care of his little girl and protect her with all that I have and look at what I’ve done Vincent. I made her go on a dangerous mission that has now caused her to go into hiding while the Whitticker’s get a bounty on her head. I’ve failed him. I’ve failed her.”
Vincent purses his lips together as he stands there awkwardly, not knowing what to say or if he should even say anything. “You do know that even if you had sent me, she would’ve wanted to go anyways. You know how Olivia is. She’s the one that’s bound to take on the hardest missions because she knows she can and yes, while she did save the agency by retrieving the documents, she’s lived up to her oath of never going down without a fight. Who else do you know can take out half an agency and still manage to complete their objective?” A small proud look lights up Evelyn’s face. “Don’t hurt yourself over this. Whitticker won’t have the bounty on for too long, I hope and we’ll have Olivia back in no time. You’re doing what you can and thats what matters. I’ll be back down in my office if there’s anything else you need.” Vincent lets himself out.
Evelyn looks out over the view and holds the photograph tightly in her hand. She walks back to her desk and tucks the photo away and shifts the box out of its space, picking it up and taking it over to her vault, opening it with a code, her fingerprint then a voice-activated lock before walking through the corridor and entering a second vault unit. There she opens the door with her palm print until finally she reaches a cell. Evelyn unlocks the cell door and places the box inside and as she walks out, she activates the motion sensor lazers. Sighing as she locks everything up again once more, as stinging as the guilt is in her bones, Evelyn knew that Vincent was right. There was nothing she could do to stop Olivia from going out of her way, it’s built in her system but even then until she manages to convince Quinton to let go of it all, she can’t help but worry if she can keep Olivia hidden for that long. There’s only so many places she can go to until she is found.
Let the game of cat and mouse begin.

Annon-Guy: What do you think of the aftermath scene in the Vangaurd Base with Brute, Alice, Decus, Richter (with Aqua hidden), Hawk, a cloaked Magnar and Scarlett? Are there any bits I can improve on? P.S. Aside Hawk, would Richter, Aqua, Alice, Decus, Magnar and Scarlett be scared of Brute when it comes to Marta or just when he gets angry?
Richter I think wouldn’t care much about Brute, regardless of whether he’s mad or overprotective of Marta. Richter was fully willing to kill Marta for Ratatosk’s core with little regard for how it would affect Brute and since he seems to be pulling strings behind the scenes in the Vanguard, I suspect Richter has more power and influence than he lets on and doesn’t feel threatened by Brute. Aqua might be wary of Brute if only because she doesn’t want anything bad happening to Richter. But since Centurions are almost immortal, I don’t think she’d fear for her own safety. Alice doesn’t seem like the sort to be scared of Brute, especially because of her deal with Richter and her power lust. She sees herself as a manipulator who’s always in control. She probably doesn’t care about Brute at all unless she thinks he can be useful to her. Decus is only there because he adores Alice and wants to do anything he can for her. So if she’s not scared, he’s not either.Magnar is probably intimidated by Brute a little bit, but he seems like he just likes being in the Vanguard so he can bully other people, so I doubt he’s TOO scared of Brute.Scarlett, since you just made her up, I’m not sure about, but it’s possible she could be scared of Brute, or perhaps she could be seeking his approval because she genuinely believes he’s descended from the Sylvarant Dynasty, and she wants whatever power he can offer her once she helps the Vanguard achieve their goals.

Chapter Reviews: April 1-5, 2019
Desire & Decorum Chapter 15:
Ugh! I hate seeing my MC being forced to wear the dress Duke Richards gave her and having to pay diamonds to get the Edgewater one. And what's with the option to have intimate moments with the other love interests? I'd stick with Hamid any day.
Crap! I didn't pick Edmund to walk down the aisle with me. Well, at least Bartholomew Chambers is good enough.
About time Viscount Westonly's mishearing comes in handy. Dragging him closer to the altar is a good way to delay the wedding vows further, though I'm sore at Hamid not objecting to the wedding.
At long last I get to reject Duke Richards during the wedding day itself. And it was a pleasant surprise to see Dominique and the queen stopping the wedding. About time the story goes somewhere. Now time for the showdown.
Across the Void Chapter 16:
The Jura general is one callous b***h. I swear, Pax needs to ditch the Jura, who comes across as moronic as the Vanguard. Just look at my precious Atlas sustaining major damage. At least the passangers are still cheerful, even though most of them except Lyra and Barlow are worthless.
Anyway, my MC and Sol got to prepare the Equinox for Barlow, and the scene is okay, though Sol's mention of his home planet just makes me think he could've been a great character while not hogging the spotlight. He's wasted potential, like the other love interests.
High School Story: Class Act Chapter 8:
I'm sick of the presidential election story sidelining my MC and Skye. Not to mention the twin's so immature for thinking it's serious business. Even their pro-sports platform is ridiculous because it's already the most supported program.
Super sad that I have to pay diamonds ro see my old MC and his friends. If I ever replay this book, I better pick that option. I heard it's also a good moment to see him and Aiden together.
As for the winter festival, I think there will be unnecessary drama, which has become the same old, same old.
Passport to Romance Chapter 4:
Honestly, Elliot's behaving like a manchild for playing around Marie Antoinette's bed. That guy shouldn't be on the MC's vlog. But then again, the MC is such a dimwit for getting basic history facts wrong. At least there's Sumire to provide insightful takes on Versailles.
Ahmed's change in demeanor isn't endearing me to him. His disdain for such opulence because it reminds him of the common man's plight is starting to make him act like a stereotypical social justice warrior. It would've made sense if he was raised rather poor, but he mentioned being in his family's home videos a lot, so probably not.
Anyway, I feel bad for Marisa having to deal with her boyfriend not seeing her again. Honestly, she better ditch him soon, just like Lily Spencer ditched Melanie early on.
America's Most Eligible Chapter 12:
Omar warning my MC to stay away from Jen just because he thought they're romantically involved doesn't make sense in this playthrough. Sure I like Jen, and my MC regards her as his friend, but not once did they do anything romantic. I mean, I roleplay my MC as gay, so...
I like how stylish Adam, Derek, Mackenzie, and Jen look in winter clothing. It's a pity the MC is never provided any. At least most of the activity is done indoors.
I'm starting to think Vince is getting the Ivy treatment. The narrative encourages me to hate him by giving me premium options to sabotage his food. It reminds me of the premium options to make the skit scene with Ivy look dramatic.
Dang, Heath and Slater giving me the cold shoulder is a reminder that I eliminated them. The irony is that Slater's still close with me. At least there's Bianca to vouch for me, and Ronan and Yvette seem to be fine with me.
Open Heart Chapter 8:
When Ethan told me to keep Naveen being Patient X a secret, I chose to keep it a promise, even when the MC's friends are asking him. Look, I know not everyone likes him, but I have to respect his privacy. Not to mention that I felt bad for him when he said he felt powerless when it comes to his seeming inability to treat Naveen, especially since he already lost Dolores.
I'm starting to respect Elijah more for his desire to save lives after a doctor saved his. I feel bad for him struggling with chronic spinal cord damage and his family's subsequent bankruptcy after paying for a surgery that saved his life. Even more so when he felt guilty for his family's ordeal even though it was never his fault to begin with. What ultimately made him earn my respect, however, was that decision to become a doctor alone after feeling inspired by the doctor who saved his.
So, the bachelorette party my MC and Bryce attended has three recycled models. Honestly, I understand that PB needs to save time, resources, and effort, but choosing already prominent characters like Scarlett Emerson? That's just bizarre. Still less bizarre compared to Nikolai Petrov's model reused in RoD even though his model, particularly the octopus tattoo, plays an integral role in VoS's story.
Ride or Die Chapter 12:
Toby should just quit the Mercy Park Crew and start a new life. Maybe a career in car painting. After all, it's an honest job.
Colt has gone the deep end, hasn't he? I never fully trusted him in the beginning, and seeing him proceeding with his job just proves his ruthlessness, even when it comes to the MC. To think of it, he's shaping to be like Icarus, who flew too close to the sun that the wax on his fake wings melted, causing him to fall to his death in the sea. I guess he'll perform an extremely risky move that it will be his downfall, all because of his pride.
So... Jason is part of the Brotherhood after all. Well, I guess you could call me foolish for underestimating the theory that he's a member of the Brotherhood and cooperating with him. After all, he's shady, and the reveal's predictable. The Brotherhood informant Foley being part of his task force is no surprise because of his character model. What kinda shocked me, however, was that Jason's entire task force are members of the Brotherhood, and the ending depends on whether MC sent info to Jason or not. Nevertheless, I find all od them except Jason rather bland because I only know that they could be worse than the Mercy Park Crew without being shown why.
After seeing people saying that Jason killed Foley, and they and their MC got trapped in the vault by the MPC, I gotta say that I'm impressed choices do matter. One thing I noticed is that consistently helping Jason (which is what I did) has him freeing Foley instead of killing him, restraining him, and telling him that MC saved their lives.
At this point, I'm going to say that as much as I hate this story for its clichés, overt focus on Logan, bland protagonist, and the predictable reveal on Jason, I begrudgingly concede that there are some parts I like. Among them are Colt and Teppei's characterization and this chapter's outcome depending on player choices.
The Elementalists Chapter 4:
The premium scene where Beckett experiments on the elements got me intrigued on how elements work in the story. I feel like it's about time I learn about the combos of the elements leading to a "higher" one (e.g. water + air = wood). Nevertheless, it would've been much better if this is free, as it reveals a bit about the plot and setting.
Man, Aster is someone who needs a big hug after her dad calls her out for mingling with humans. Seeing her and her species reeling from the outcome of the Wand Wars got me thinking this will lead to an important story arc that needs a satisfying conclusion. After all, the sour relations between humans and wood nymphs is a good way to show the gray elements in the setting. I also wasted no time cheering her up by helping her at her shop.
After the appearance of the caped lady who called herself the Blood Source, that got me even more excited on how the elements came into being. Seeing that blood is at the top of the pyramid, I think the lady is the first one created, followed by sun and moon, then wood and metal, and finally the other four, including Kane.
Speaking of Kane, as much as I like him, his behavior in this chapter is a somber reminder of the danger he poses. I like his playfulness and friendly demeanor towards the MC, but him suffocating the school staff shows his disregard for life.
