The only doctor I trust is the one who is the only reason I have all four of my limbs at all, because she took the risk and washed my left elbow and knee joints out on the ward since there were no emergency theaters open for hours. If she hadn't I would have lost both above the elbow/knee. Then she also took on my case and became my consultant until I became an adult, so she's probably the only reason I ever got most of all of the other treatments I did. She really had to fight on my behalf to get them. I hope she's doing well.

THOUGHTS HAVE TAKEN OVER AND WONT STOP!

Baby's asleep, partner is asleep. My brain is constantly showing me flash backs to when I was in hospital almost 4 months ago to give birth.

I close my eyes and all I see is the red sign above the curtain telling me I'm basically in a High Priority recovery room in the Recovery Ward. Why would I be here? What kind of infection have I suddenly got? Why can't I see my new baby?

After 3-4 days in this recovery ward, my partner overheard the words 'Sepsis, Septicemia and Septic Shock'. So does anyone wanna tell me what the fuck is going on?! He confronted the consultants and they confirmed I was being treated for Sepsis! I still had no clue what was going on, I thought I was in recovery from an emergency c section but it turns out not only was I recovering from a c section but also an infection that I never knew about. My baby was in ICU for 2 days because of clogged airwaves from the c section as well as being on antibiotics as a precaution for sepsis. I discovered this once I was handed the discharge letter. I broke down reading it. It contained words like 'resus, floppy, purple, not breathing'. I felt sick. We had to find that out from a fuckin letter!

It was almost like I knew something would happen. During pregnancy people would get so excited and I'd always say 'dont get excited until the baby is here as you just don't know what could happen'. Everyone thought I was being stupid...funny that.

Almost 4 months in and I still feel like a mess. I DO NOT want to look at photos from when we first met, me trying to breast feed and bond with you because I don't want to go back there. It wasn't me, doesn't look like me, she looks lost and it breaks my heart. One shouldn't have to go through that then be left to deal with it alone.

I watched Scrubs for the first time in college, when I knew nothing about hospital culture or the weight of working in medicine. I liked it, I laughed, I cried, but I didn’t fully get it.

I’m rewatching it on the other side of the covid pandemic and three and half years of nursing later. Now it’s like therapy. It may lean more towards satire and be pretty silly at times, but it captures hospital dynamics and the emotionality and trauma of working in healthcare in a way that makes me feel seen.
