omgggg i need to hear more abt ur story sniff sniff
absolutely will stop at nothing to ramble about it!!!
it's actually not really about twinks and evil airlines entirely basically its a completely different earth at about, id say equivalent to our 1970s 1980s technology wise with a lot of insane geopolitical issue in itself just like our earth <3 but essentially the main premise and why i call it "permafrost" is because it's undergoing a very drastic and difficult to explain global cooling which is in the first steps of causing quite intense global climate problems.
so a lot of it is actually about researchers who are part of this scientific organization trying to preserve the world (or at least figure out what is happening) that makes you give up your citizenship and become a stateless person basically only given rights by this organization so you can't use your knowledge to advance anything other than the planets interest. essentially though because of this sort of supragovernmental international agency power to provide a sort of bulletproof and no-questions-asked amnesty as long as they find that the skills of the people are befit their mission (bc everyone decided that its good if guys stop the world from freezing and killing everything) this organization consists of very um. colourful characters. (their status internationally is quite controversial with only a few nations even letting these people into their borders despite them being widely revered in some ways. There's a lot of op eds about this stuff in verse hahaha.)
there's like a few guys including a guy named davit côte (who is essentially the main character rn but im not sure) who lives up in the arctic almost full time studying the phenomenon and a bunch of other "problematic" scientists + just random people seeking a sort of permanent asylum (like whistleblowers and the like) and victims of political persecution looking for shelter who end up mired in this like very odd position of this like, almost penitence work having to figure out why the world is dying and how to fix it on a scale WAY beyond just geopolitical and ideological
the character that the redbird twink is important to is a lady called Petra Funar who is like basically a war criminal fleeing international prosecution bc her coworker and bestie (the twink) leaked a bunch of very evil things that she maybe didnt quite enable but was definitely a knowing participant in. in my head essentially shes a former fighter pilot (hence war crimes) who sort of moves on to use her skills in like. idk driving airplanes for science, in order to help this organization. and like Ben's (the twink)s death is really fundamental to her seeking out this asylum and for her it really is about repentance and she is basically like twink peaks style haunted by this dudes ghost telling her to repent for the evil she did to the world while she miserably nearly dies in the arctic constantly.
partly she is just kind of crazy due to previous events and partly the nature of the arctiic in this world is super fucky like psychologically so the closer they work to the "phenomenon" the more wild the experiences tend to be. There's a sort of rank scale for people and how close they can get to the "phenomenon" and how much time they can spend up there bc it really fucks with people's minds. its pretty awesome.
also they do figure out the world is ending like for realisies <3 its quite sexy

Character Popularity Poll
Epic of Evil page 40-62
After the conclusion of the “Daughter of Evil” novels and the announcement of this fanbook, we opened up a character popularity poll! It was held on Twitter between June 16th and June 30th, and we received a ton of votes. Here we’ll tell you the order, as well as share some of the red hot comments they got!
.
1st place with 89 votes
Allen Avadonia (Prince Alexiel)
(Kagamine Len)
.
Profile
Age: 14 at death (485-500)
Nationality: Kingdom of Lucifenia
Race: Orthodox Lucifenian
Religion: Levin, Levia sect
Relatives: Father; Arth I (deceased), Mother; Anne (deceased), Sister; Riliane, Adoptive Father; Leonhart (deceased), Adoptive Sister; Germaine
.
He’s a servant who works in the Lucifenian royal palace, but in truth he is Riliane’s twin brother, Prince Alexiel. During the revolution he is executed in Riliane’s stead.
.
-Due to an event that occurred when he was young, Allen as a prince was publicly declared dead. He works as a servant surrounded by his friends.
.
*This character was based on the VOCALOID 2 Character Vocal Series 02 Kagamine Len of “Kagamine Rin/Len” published by Crypton Future Media.

“The Servant of Evil” is the reason I got sucked into AkunoP-sama’s music in the first place.
Allen-kun is the best!
I was really moved by Allen’s kindness at prioritizing Riliane over himself. I think there are probably some people who don’t think he’s kind because he betrayed so many people, but I think “doing it all for the person you want to protect” is itself a different sort of kindness.
Obviously it’s Allen. His words and deeds made me cry my eyes out.
I love how brave he is, and that he was willing to do anything for Riliane’s sake.
He really struck me with how he protected Riliane to the end. I was also about the same age as Allen when I first bought the book, so I was kinda taken in by him being such a naïve young man.
He’s really cool looking!!!
His level of kindness that he devoted himself to his sole blood relative Riliane and ultimately took her place is really amazing…!
He was alright with becoming evil if it was for Riliane’s sake. He did all that for his sister; for Riliane he used his sword to kill people, he can ride a horse, he protected his sister—he’s just really cool!!
What an amazing loyalty he has…Allen supports his sister and the rest!! He’s so awesome, I wanna be like him!!
.
Artist’s Comments
AkunoP: I rather expected him to be the most popular.
Ichika: Wow, he really was well received.
AkunoP: Unfortunately, he died in the first book, so I wasn’t really able to delve into his character much from the third book onward.
--Rin probably had also moved on from Allen at that point.
AkunoP: I figured things might get pretty dark if I had too many developments that reflected back on the past. I also thought it might not fit with the feel of the third book onwards. However, there’s no way that Rin forgot about Allen, ever. She’s just hesitant to let it show on the outside. And it wouldn’t be all that good for her to show it to anyone, given her position. She’d get found out, lol
--That’s for sure (haha). How about you, Ichika-san?
Ichika: I think he’s sort of like, the most wholehearted character of the main cast. Like coming to help even after he’d already died.
AkunoP: In a certain way, in the latter half he turns into more of a super character than Elluka, lol
.
.
2nd place with 35 votes
Clarith
(Yowane Haku)
.
Profile
Age: 21--26 (born 479)
Nationality: Elphegort--Kingdom of Lucifenia
Race: Netsuma
Religion: Levin Held sect
Relatives: Father (died when she was young), Mother (died in 499)
.
She was discriminated against by Elphe people for being a descendant of the Netsuma clan with white hair and red eyes. She had a negative personality, but that changed when she met Michaela.
.
--Though she was quite negative, she was able to become a bit more positive through her relationships with Michaela and Rin.
.
*This character was based on “Yowane Haku”, a derivative of the VOCALOID 2 Character Vocal Series 01 Hatsune Miku published by Crypton Future Media.
.

It’s partially because I really like Haku ane-san, but there’s also her earnest devotion to Michaela, her strength for forgiving Riliane despite having every reason to hate her…I’m not Michaela, but you’re the most wonderful person, for me! Especially how cheerful you were after the revolution in “Praefacio of Blue”, Clarith-san!
I want her to be happy
I like seeing her working so hard.
She feels like the only true “everyman”. So I feel like she’s also the character who “grew” the most. Her meeting with Rin at the monastery on the shore was so sad, I was really touched. I think that Riliane was able to reform as Rin because she had Clarith there for her.
Clarith is so precious, being so negative but also caring for her friends!
I wanna try the brioche that Clarith makes!!
I like everything about her!
I admire her for being so strong.
She’s so dedicated and adorable///
.
Artist’s Comments
AkunoP: I think she’s the character who grew up the most through the whole series.
Ichika: She grew the most as a person.
AkunoP: I wanted a character who could see the revolution and the events around it from the perspective of the average person. That was how I came up with Clarith. Actually, she’s a character I came up with even earlier than Elluka, around the same time as the early four. So I’ve gotten pretty attached to her.
Ichika: It feels really good to see her progression from a passive personality to someone who takes action for herself. Also, her catchphrase of “I’m sorry for being alive” is way too easy to use. I found myself blurting it out once while I was working.
AkunoP: That was originally inspired by Daizai. So that might be a bit dangerous as a catchphrase, lol
Ichika: I make sure I only say it when I’m alone in my room, so it’s alright, haha.

3rd place with 32 votes
Riliane Lucifen d’Autriche (Rin)
(Kagamine Rin)
.
Profile
Age: 14--19 (Born 485)
Nationality: Kingdom of Lucifenia
Race: Orthodox Lucifenian
Religion: Levin Levia Sect--Held sect
Relatives: Father; Arth I (deceased), Mother; Anne (deceased), Brother; Alexiel (Allen) (deceased)
.
The princess of Lucifenia. For her outrageous policies she is reviled as the “Daughter of Evil”. After the revolution she lives at a monastery, hiding her true identity.
.
--Having survived the revolution, she started a new life in a monastery as “Rin”.
.
*This character was based on the VOCALOID 2 Character Vocal Series 02 Kagamine Rin of “Kagamine Rin/Len” published by Crypton Future Media.

I really love that scene where she accepts whatever Clarith is going to do to her after Clarith learned the truth, because it shows how much Riliane has grown up over the story.
I want her to live and be strong.
In this story with so many feelings intersecting, she is such a cool and strong fantasy girl who fought without being swept away!
I earnestly love her. Just lots of love. From the heart.
She really is kind! And she has a sense of responsibility! And she’s so so cute!! And she was so cute as a small child too, I love her to bits! She did get possessed by a demon and all, but she’s really a good kid!!
I want her to be happy…
I think she’s a character that I’ve come to like as I’ve read through the “of Evil” series. I want to support Riliane with all my might, surpassing so much grief to grow up like that. I mean, what I’m trying to say is that Riliane is really cute.
She’s the yellow flower of evil in full bloom!
.
Artist’s Comments
AkunoP: I was really unsure of her role in this. I think the people who listened to the original song were largely split into two points of view. That she was just bad from the core, or that it was the fault of outside influences... In the end, she wound up how she is now.
Ichika: I think Riliane’s another character whose personality and general air changed completely between the former and latter halves of the story. There is the change in environment from princess to nun, but I think myself that Allen is the biggest influence.
--Riliane is one of the characters who grew up in a big way.

Elluka Clockworker
(Megurine Luka)
.
Profile
Age: Secret♥
Nationality: Kingdom of Lucifenia--Stateless

Religion: Levin Levia Sect
Relatives: NO DATE
.
A sorceress with a mysterious air about her, and one of the Three Heroes of Lucifenia. Under request of the great land god Held, she is on a journey to search for the “Vessels of Deadly Sin”.
.
--Are her farsighted values, unwavering strength, and the humanity that she sometimes displays the secret key to her popularity?
.
*This character was based on the VOCALOID 2 Character Vocal Series 03 “Megurine Luka” published by Crypton Future Media.

She’s so strong and smart, and a beauty on top of that! She might seem irreverent but she pulls through when it counts, and always winds up helping people. I also think it’s adorable how bad she is at being straightforward with what she wants to say. She’s surrounded by so much mystery and I’m just caught up in it! I like her and I can’t help but be curious about her!!
She’s strong, she’s so strong, so strong. And that scene where she fought with Abyss was so cool!
She’s mysterious, and when all is said and done she’ll help you out, so I really like her.
Whether she’s making any S-like scowls or looking like a beauty, I love it all!
She’s got this feeling that she’ll pull through when push comes to shove, which makes her really cool.
I’m really enchanted with how, as irreverent as she is, she gets on task and focused in situations where she needs to toughen up and get focused.
She’s a really amazing woman, with a lot of depth. I kinda like how playful she is.
I love how Elluka’s so suspicious.
She acts happy go lucky, but her past that you can glean from the Leviantan Catastrophe and Recollective Music Box is way too sad.
I love heeeer!
That mysterious feel she’s got really kills me! Though I guess I like how free-spirited she is, lol. I really wanna learn more about Elluka’s circumstances!
.
Artist’s Comments
--She finally showed up on the cover this time!!
Ichika: Seriously…!
AkunoP: That’s just ‘cause she’s a character that never showed up in the original song. You could say it was inevitable in a sense that she couldn’t come out before this point, lol, but I think the inverse of that is that it’s because she didn’t show up before that she’s been so easy to work with. She’s such a mature character that through the whole series she’s had a sort of feel to her that she’s always got some leeway.
Ichika: Elluka’s been such a steady character this whole series. She’s been alive for such a long span of time that she’s gotta be very well-put together mentally. I like characters like that, so I had a lot of fun drawing her.
--There are a lot of opinions up there that they like how she always comes around to helping people, aren’t there.
AkunoP: Well, she is a bit on in years…Er, nevermind.
Ichika: She does seem very helpful.
AkunoP: She’s got a lot of things on the inside that I haven’t written about yet, probably owing to being a character with a lot of leeway, but in her case I do think that she’ll have a lot of opportunities to show up elsewhere, so…That’s in production, lol
--We’ll wait for the Deadly Sins Series with baited breath! Looking forward to it!

Kyle Marlon
(KAITO)
 .
Profile
Age: 26(claims to be 22)--31 (born 474)
Nationality: Marlon
Race: Marlon
Religion: Levin Levia sect
Relatives: Father; Previous king of Marlon (deceased), Mother; Empress Dowager Prim, Sister; Ney (different fathers), half-brother; Arkatoir (different mothers), countless other siblings of different mothers (all dead)
 .
The young ruler of Marlon. He’s very vexed at being a puppet of his mother, Empress Dowager Prim. He has a very straight-laced personality with a strong sense of justice.
 .
--Though his status is as a king, he often stands on the front lines and goes out in disguise.
 .
*This character was based on the VOCALOID Character “KAITO” published by Crypton Future Media.

His bravery when it comes to Michaela is just too cute!
That he was able to overcome the temptations of a demon a second time, despite knowing a demon’s power and having been reliant on them before, and went out to fight with his own power was just so awesome…!
He may be a troublemaker(?) who inadvertently glosses over his age, but Kyle-niisama really pulled through when it came down to it, and I love him for it!
I feel like he’s the character that gets messed with the most, but I really like him a lot (haha).
My vote goes to the young king who experienced love and hatred, came vast to face with his weakness, and in the end majorly grew up.
He’s so pitiful it’s adorable~ And I think he’s a relatively tasty character!!
I wanna shout it out! I frikkin’ love him!
No matter how he’s wavered, no matter how he’s tempted by demons, in the end he stood on his own two feet. I just love him for that!!
I really like his personality. His conversations with Germaine were really funny!
 .
Artist’s Comments
AkunoP: I’ll say this now that it’s all over, but in the end I did end up liking this character. Only, I didn’t actually want to write him as being that cool.
Ichika: He participated in the revolution, he fell in love, he transformed into a demon…Now that I think on it, he’s a busy guy.
AkunoP: I feel like he’s the character that single-handedly undertakes the idea of “human weakness”. I mean, I don’t think he’s that cool if you look at just his actions, lol.
--The comments calling him “precious” and “incompetent” really stood out.
AkunoP: That’s cause he’s not a hero at all.
Ichika: Looking at him overall I guess he is pretty incompetent...lol
--There was also a comment calling him the “hunky sad king”(haha).
Ichika: lololol
AkunoP: I think that’s perfect lol
--You can’t even get him to follow-up(haha)

I really love the way she talks. And I don’t think I’m the only one who got excited at her wearing glasses in Praeludium. Her and Elluka make a really good duo. I’m really looking forward to seeing their actions in the Pere Noel period in the novels to come. I’m guessing she’s the one who made that handgun.
She’s so cool and awesome! Her glasses really suit her!
She’s very blunt but I really like how that contrasts with how caring she is for her friends.
Her clumsy broken speech is just so incredibly cute!! And she’s so strong!!
I’m just…really interested in Elluka and Gumillia’s journey after this!
The fact that she put on glasses…And I’m very intrigued as to this “important person” that she decided to stay human for!
I wish she could have stayed with Michaela forever.
Obviously it’s Gumillia!

She’s really stylish. I admire her.
I think it’s so cool that she’s such a gallant woman. I wanted to become someone like her too!!
Those words she said when she came face to face with Rin in the last novel and realized it was Riliane just left me speechless. I really like Germaine’s weak and strong points.
I really love her big-sisterly disposition and compassion. I want her to be happy (。・ω・。)
A woman swordswoman is so cool! She’s so amazing! I feel like she’s the hottest person in all of Daughter of Evil lol. Her line “Just what in the world is evil” in Yellow is my favorite line in all four novels. I want to read how she wound up in Beelzenia after the Revolution.
That line she says during the work about how fast her wounds heal unexpectedly won me over all at once.♪

Through the work I thought she was a villain the whole time, but after reading Praefacio of Blue I realized that she was actually just a very sad girl. I wish she could have been happy.
The sad end of her life, continuing to be led around by the nose by Prim and a demon, was just tearjerking.
I love her rampaging in the duel scene in Praefacio.
I would be in utter bliss if Ney stabbed me.
I won’t forgive the people who used Ney like that. She’s just too sad. Even though really she was a good kid…
Her crazed expressions, her outfit, I just love everything about her.
She did a lot of horrible things, but Ney was also a victim of the vessels of deadly sin…Also, I absolutely loved Ney wearing Lady Conchita’s dress!
Her crazy face is the best!!!

I’m really intrigued by his past. I want to learn more about him, and at the same time I’m hoping we get more info on his excessive sister complex.
You really gotta hurry up with his past mysteries surrounding his sister, Sarah…!! I really like samurai, so I adored the scene where he was fighting with a Japanese sword.
I think he’s really pretty lol. And I liked his how he let Allen hire him because he sympathized with him. During the work I wanted to learn more about the past they alluded to.
It’s too bad he’s only in one book. I wanted to see him do more.
I’m really curious about his sister!
He didn’t show up much but he was really cool!

I love the greedy juuudge!! Also the fact that he has a kid. I bet he’s a good cook too. I’m really looking forward to the novel for greed in the new series.
He’s so cool! He’s such a kind father, worrying over his daughter! If you want help, show me the money!!!
I really love the corrupt, miserly judge! The fact that he’s a father who’s caring for his daughter that we learned at the end of Praefacio…Makes me wonder if he’s actually a good guy.
I like Gallerian-san.
First of all, I’m just crazy about the middle-aged, fatherly Galle-sama. I can’t help but be enraptured with him as he persists in pushing his own will even until the very end! I hope he can achieve his utopia!

I like how she’s just brimming with curiosity. And that scene where she reunited with Clarith was great.

Actually, I was always watching over Yukina’s adventures with my heart racing, like I was her big sis or mother lol
She’s so cute!! I was so excited when I saw that Gallerian-san was reading the books that Yukina-chan wrote in the distant future!!
She’s really grown up… I really wanna read that “Crow” fairytale that got brought up in Praeludium.

She has a very lively and simple personality. I think she’d be a fun person to hang out with.
She’s a power fighter who wields a longsword, and I really like her straightforwardness.
I’m a bit embarrassed to admit that I read all four books just because I wanted to read about her gallant figure in it.
She’s one of the few characters in Daughter of Evil to live for the moment rather than being stuck in the past, and it’s really incredible how she’s more about taking action than dwelling on things!
I really love this dummy. Her appearance is adorable but it’s too bad she isn’t at all in how she talks lol

Love his being a sappy parent and his affection for Yukina. And I’m also intrigued by his conversations with Kyle.
That doting father is just the best!!
The disconnect between his harsh, bad-friend tone towards Kyle and his unending devotion to his daughter is so lovable.
That doting father Keel is adorable lol That scene where he gets furious at Kyle for hugging Yukina was just the best lolol
Him being a loving father is amusing, but his face as a merchant and his friendship (mean friendship?) with King Kyle is also just right on point.

‘Cause he helped guide Clarith and Michaela until the end. But it was so sad that he couldn’t tell Clarith how he felt about her. I hadn’t been expecting him to write that scene with Yukina and the rest praying before his grave in the third book, so I was really happy for that.
Because even though it was Clarith he really wanted to protect, he protected Michaela, and was so kind.
I wish he could have been happy with Clarith!
He was the hottest guy in the whole work. I wish he could have done more.

I cried when he died.
His interminably direct personality is so cool.
Those kids have him as a dad, or else this dad has them for kids. They’re a family, even if they’re not related by blood.
I love the older guys ha ha I love him so much, I was so disappointed at how quickly he died in Cloture.

She didn’t get much screentime, lolol but I think she’s great with her dependability and grace.
I would have liked to see a record of her child-rearing work when Riliane and Alexiel were still little ankle biters. Maybe she was an unexpectedly scary mom (and conversely maybe King Arth spoiled them).
I think she was a fantastic queen. I tear up when I think about how the twins’ fates would have changed if she’d still been alive…Also, I’d be really happy if we could see her again in something set in the past.

If ur still doing the 100 followers thing, well I challenge YOU with deciphering Lithuania.
ok anon thank you so much for asking this question because i have in fact recently fallen in love with lithuania, because they are such an interesting character! (also hhhh im so sorry for how late this is)
Gender
As you may have noticed, I usually use they/them pronouns to refer to Lithuania. I hc them as being nonbinary and using he/they pronouns, though I personally prefer to use they rather than he in that case because. Idk what pronouns you use. But in my experience it’s really hard to get people to call you ‘they’ when you go by ‘he/they’ or ‘she/they’ or smth like that. Though I don't imagine any of the nations are very attached to their “birth gender” (are nations born???), lithuania is one of those who is a bit less attached. They’re just sort of there, in terms of gender. In my headcanons i also think this has something to do with religion, as lithuania was one of the last european countries to convert to Christianity- just because so much of gender as we know it comes from christianity and what people in the 16th and 17th centuries considered a ‘good’ christian. Thats not to say that there are no gender roles in other religions, but that the way westerners typically conceptualize gender has quite a lot to do with the religious conflicts occurring within christianity. Like you can trace the ideas behind the nuclear family archetype back to the protestant reformation. Additionally, I hc them as being Jewish, which further distances them from the western christian gender roles (though that’s not why i hc them as jewish! More on that later). Finally, i just like myself some trans/nb characters. There’s so few popular trans hcs and that makes me kinda sad ya know? Welcome to the trans agenda its just me projecting onto all my faves
Mental Health
Okay, so, i think it’s pretty well known that lithuania’s mental health is wack. They’re often characterised as being a very anxious person, but i think the ways in which they’re anxious is super interesting. For one, they are extremely conflict averse and like to avoid it by being a sort of people pleaser. It’s a sort of defense mechanism, because nobody can hate you if you do whatever they say. Like, if you let people be shitty to you, they won’t hate you for your personality. This is clearly flawed logic because then people are still going to be shitty to you, but. It makes sense to liet. In their mind, it’s okay to let people hurt if your reason is sound enough- Because if they’re not super emotionally engaged in a relationship that’s unhealthy for them, then they can’t get hurt, right? Of course, they can. A good example of this is their relationship with Russia. I think tolvydas sees compliance as necessary there, in order to avoid being hurt. The thing is…compliance is also hurting them, even if they see it as ‘worth it.’ To them, behaving in a submissive way is a survival tactic. A really bad one, but a survival tactic nonetheless.
This also plays into their tendency to be self-martyring. I think Tolvydas is very good at fighting, and all around a really awesome warrior (strong aragorn energy), which makes them think that they need to be the one to save everyone. Hero complex, sort of. This, coupled with their almost maternal care for Latvia and Estonia, makes them feel like they have a sort of weight-of-the-world on their shoulders. Though Estonia and Latvia do look up to them a lot, Tolvydas can sometimes fail to realise that they are also their own people and can fight their own battles. He feels a sort of obligation to protect them due to their shared culture and languages as The Baltic Trio, though it doesn’t go much further than a sense of obligation. They spent most of their youth fighting, to the extent that that’s most of what Tolvydas personally knows as ‘life,’ but they never actually got to know the other two Baltics very well until the modern day. They have to protect, have to be a caregiver, but they don’t actually know super well the things they’re trying to protect. It’s both a sense of obligation to protect as well as the sense that this is all they’re good at and as long as they’re fighting for a morally just cause, that’ll do.
I think something that would expose this flaw would be when they were first taken over by the Russian Empire in the 1790s, they were pretty miserable about a lot of things- Like the loss of all their territory and the sudden statelessness of their people- but a big one would’ve been the loss of Poland. This isn’t meant to be super shippy, but you know. They were united into one kingdom, and they had been for centuries, so i don’t imagine it was an easy separation. Though this is more up for debate where real people are concerned, these characters were essentially a big part of each other, ya know? Regardless of how much Lithuania actually likes Poland, they’re still a part of each other and that separation will undoubtedly be painful. Anyway, all that is to say that this separation was at the forefront of their mind during the beginning of the 19th century, and they let it sort of prevent them from taking care of the other Baltics. The issue with that is that they still considered themself to be protecting Estonia and Latvia, even though, in reality, nobody was. Also in reality, Lithuania was making themself out to be the worst off, and were generally sort of annoying to be around at this point in time. Their whole woe-is-me attitude wasn’t fun, and they were hypocritical in that they saw themself as being a better friend than they actually were. They still see themself as being a great friend, and though it’s improved in recent years, they’re still sort of. Flighty, i guess, where friendship is concerned. There was also a lot of annoyance by the other baltics about them being so self-martyring- Tolvydas was Ivan’s favorite, after all (that’s not necessarily a good thing, but. He was softer on them in certain ways). Anyway, I guess the big takeaway of this paragraph is that Liet often lets their self perception cloud the way they act in relationships.
Much of the stuff I’ve mentioned so far is a result of them having quite a lot of PTSD. I think Lithuania’s character tends to be explored through a few common lenses, those being the medieval vibes of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and through being oppressed by the Russian Empire/Soviet Union. Not to say that there’s not a lot of other content about them, but this is what I see most often. I think that all the nations have some form of PTSD, but with Lithuania it’s very pronounced, and it’s made clear that a lot of their tendencies are a result of past trauma- Like the need to take care of others. This is likely originating with their childhood, as they grew up in a very violent environment where their survival was never guaranteed (survivor’s guilt much?) and violence was just the way of things. This is where the need to protect comes from. There used to be several more Baltic nations, though you could argue that now there’s only two- Lithuania and Latvia, as Estonia does not speak a Baltic language and would really like to be considered Nordic.
Finally, Lithuania is also an interesting character where forgiveness is concerned. I think their sense of morality is very black and white, so some people (Feliks) will be easily forgiven where others (Ivan) will not. In reality, I think it would definitely be valid for Tolvydas to hate both of them, yet they don't- Because they decided that Feliks was a friend and Ivan was not. Both Feliks and Ivan care very deeply about them, but neither treats Tolvydas in a very good way. Of course, I’m aware that the situation in the Russian Empire/USSR and the Commonwealth were very different, but I’m talking about these three dudes and their relationships with each other beyond the lens of politics. Because Feliks tried to be their friend in a way that didn’t hurt them tremendously, and because. Look at them, Feliks isn’t 5’4 and can’t hurt you. They’re not an intimidating person and they’re not incredibly powerful like Ivan is. Though that’s not all of it- Feliks’ feelings for Tolvydas are definitely a purer, more selfless type of love than what Ivan feels for them- it makes it harder for Tolvydas to hold a grudge against them. Whereas for Ivan, their relationship was about control. He needed to control them as a way of expressing how he felt about them. He represents a lot of what Tolvydas fought against in their youth, so of course they hate him. Of course, I don’t think they like holding grudges. They want to be able to care for everyone, because they know that everyone deserves to be treated well and cared for and all that. You can't exactly do that if you hold a grudge against someone, so it actually kind of sucks for them when they see someone they hate suffering. It’s a sort of conflict of interest- The caregiving instincts vs the hatred for this person- and they often don’t know what to do in that situation. Usually they wind up helping but not happy about it. They just don’t want to see others suffer, despite the fact that they dislike this person (Russia is of course the exception. They don’t want to help him at all anymore).
Relationship with family
So, this is a bit of an interesting topic. I think the Baltics consider themselves family just because of what they’ve been through together, but they’re not actually blood related. Though they share similar cultures, and languages, they’re just not related. Maybe Lithuania and Latvia are cousins, but yeah. Lithuania sees themself as the head of their little family, as they have the oldest surviving European culture and language. They sometimes get in their head about that, and can act like both a mom friend and a mom who is bad at mom-ing. It’s a sort of self appointed thing, and can be really annoying to the other two. They don’t pay the utmost attention to their fellow Baltics, and are more concerned with physical well being than emotional well being, so, despite establishing themself as a caretaker, do not wind up actually caring for the other Baltics in the ways they need to be cared for.
Fighting style
So, as I’ve mentioned, Lithuania is a talented fighter. They go hard as shit, and can very much kick your ass. I think they prefer to be very technical about how they fight, with something boring like a broadsword as their weapon of choice, but are not afraid to fight dirty. Like rip off an ear with their teeth kind of playing dirty. I think they take fighting very seriously. Though Lithuania as we know it is only about 800 years old, I think Tolvydas is much older. The definition of a nation (a large body of people united by common descent, history, culture, or language, inhabiting a particular country or territory, according to the oxford dictionary) does not require there to be a central governing body, so I think it’s quite possible for Lithuania to be well over 2000. Anyway, all that is to say that they didn’t grow up in medieval times, so by the time they’re like. Achieving dominance in Eastern Europe, they’re already very old and well versed in many different styles of fighting. In the modern day, I think they’ve learned more different fighting styles from other parts of the world, but will always fall back on the way they learned how to fight in ancient times.
Religion
So as I mentioned earlier, Lithuania is Jewish in my headcanons (orthodox, specifically. I think they're kinda traditional). I have a couple reasons for this- There has been a historical presence of Ashkenazi Jews in Lithuania, going back to the 13th or 14th century, and this is due to certain legal protections granted to Jewish people under pre-Commonwealth law. They were legally on similar footing to the average free people of Lithuania, and were able to create a slightly more prosperous community than Jews in other areas of Europe. This was also affected by the Black Plague of the 1340s. Orthodox Jews tend to put a high value on cleanliness, and often have two sinks in their houses (my childhood home, for example, had two sinks, and i lived in a majority jewish area). They also happened to be concentrated in Eastern Europe, due to the protections. Because of this, Eastern European Jews have some of the highest sruvival rates for the Black Plague and actually brought up the survival rates of the region as a whole- Though this also resulted in some intense antisemitism, as many Christians blamed Jewish people for the plague even happening, due to their higher survival rates. Despite various expulsions  and the loss of legal rights, the Jewish population remained relatively steady up until world war 2. Jewish people made up about 10% of the total population of Lithuania in 1941, and 45% of the total population of Vilnius. (To put this in perspective, the entire world population is only about 0.2% Jewish). Anyway, all this is to say that it’s not out of the question for Lithuania to be Jewish.
Extras/Fun stuff
Lithuania loves reading, especially the fantasy/fairy tale genre. It makes them nostalgic without the trauma of reading historical fiction.
They’re also very musically gifted, and can play the piano, bass, ukelele, and flute.
They wear docs.
They love hot chocolate.
They remind me of both Aragorn from lotr and Hozier. They’re such a sweet lad.
Bicon who has like 5 people thirsting for them at a given moment but is either oblivious or not looking for a relationship right now.
Here are my fics with lithuania as a main character!
My previous character analyses of lithuania (sorry they’re mostly in shipping contexts, rip) and another good analysis someone else did
My playlist for them
and i think thats it! of course i could always talk more about them, but those are my thoughts for now! thank you so much for the ask, i hope i was able to meet your challenge!

Crooked Kingdom (So/c 2)
(2/5*)
I still just can’t get on board with this one.. I really wanted to. I enjoyed SoC, well, the last half of SoC, and was told it all gets better once you get to that point. I was told that Crooked Kingdom is all go, totally action packed and awesome. Boy howdy what a letdown. I suppose it was action packed, but it was all over the place and not very gripping. Not once did this really pull me in.
It gets long, and spoilery at the end.
The Good:
Nina! I thought I was going to hate her back in the beginning of SoC but she was possibly the most dynamic character out of all of them even to the end. Her story (besides that One Terrible Thing) was done justice. She was fleshed out. And then done a terrible injustice with that One Terrible Thing. Nina was struggling through withdrawals on top of her demons and figuring out who she is again, all while still being a badass involved in the many shenanigans of this book.
Wylan & Jesper. Again they are cute idiots and I love them. They both felt more real this time around, more meat to their personalities and neither of them got killed off. that’s the dream. That’s the real gay agenda.
The Bad:
Kaz. He’s the most boring main character ever. Everything is way too easy for him. Everything goes exactly according to some crazy plan he *just thought of*. He gets out of sticky situations with ease, even with a busted leg. Every time one of his plans went how it was supposed to (spoilers: every damn time) he makes some like *mic drop* comment that makes me hate him even more. The way his plans are written sometimes isolates the reader. “It worked because this thing I did that I didn’t tell anyone about and I’m the best” *mic drop*. He is written as someone Much older than we’re supposed to believe he is, which has always been my struggle with all of these characters. I think it just shows so much more blindingly with Kaz. Even if his whole life has been a struggle and he’s a hardened criminal... he still doesn’t have the thought processes of a 17 year old. He’s talked about as being some genius more than it is actually shown.
Only maybe Jesper & Wylan kinda seem like teenagers. I’m pretty convinced Bardugo was writing this book as adult fiction and then decided she wanted it to be YA after all and just reduced their ages down in number but nothing else. If I read them as 30-40 year olds it’s much more pleasant, but she has to keep reminding everyone they are ~17~ and that just ruins it all over again.
Inej. I liked her enough in SoC, but here she is reduced to just.. not much. Everything about her, in reference to her, that she says or thinks, is repetitive. I know I read the same line about her several times throughout this book. Her storyline in Crooked Kingdom felt like a constant backpedal. Like ooo we’re getting somewhere, she’s going to overcome something... and then we loop back to the starting position again. Just.. frustrating. No growth. Treading water.
A few paragraphs ago I say it is action packed. And it is, but that is not a good thing here. The fast pacing was a major downfall. There’s so much going on, so many odd plot lines. The beginning of SoC felt the same way for me. It feels like running loosely related errands. “We have to do this thing before we can do this but we also have several more things to do and...” ok. It’s like questing on Runescape but Worse. Do we need to pick up some milk on the way over also, Kaz? A lot of these plot lines / devices also kinda got abandoned. Really just feels like trying to rush through these smaller events to get to the Big Bad Event, not giving anyone time to process what just happened. There are no feelings, its just happening. There’s no real consulting about what they’re going to do, because Kaz is the ~mastermind~ and hes so ~witty~ and always just has the perfect plan that will go off without a single problem. I guess she is writing another book? But I’m pretty sure that is an afterthought. No Grisha uprising? No actual problems with Parem? hokay. sure. just gonna build to an actually interesting and good plot and flush it down the harbor in favor of a) another heist basically b) a boring ass villain who is really just a rich dude in a suit.
Dunyasha. Another rush through plot device. She’s incredible. She’s lovely. She’s going to murder Inej.. but nope. She was not done justice. Inej was so worthless during their fight, just getting stabbed left and right and not being able to fight back. I wanted more Dunyasha. Not just ~defeated~ and then is nothing more.
Van Eck was underwhelming as a villain. He was too easily defeated because ~kaz the mastermind~ He gets hauled off to jail.. for “committing” fraud... h’okay. and the gang gets all his money. woo. hoo. he did not have enough face time. there was basically no interaction with him. He was just some dull politician.. oo scary.
The vicious coupling. I’m literally just going to paste from my SoC review because its the SAME THING. “ It may actually be possible, wait wait hear me out, to end a YA series without pairing up EVERYONE. You can even end it without pairing up anyone. I mean yay a little nibble of lgbt rep, I’ll take what I can get. But ugh does everyone have to be together? It doesn’t bode well for plot/character development in the next book. Because that just sounds like a good plot device- oh wait! that is what it is! With Inej being kidnapped!”
Ummm this was basically SoC but just like. slightly different plot. Exact. Same. Algorithm.
The Really Bad.
KAZ OWNS INEJ KAZ, A STRAIGHT WHITE MALE, OWNS A SULI GIRL “The Suli, being a nomadic, stateless people, may have been influenced by Jewish or Romani cultures.” and the main character of this book. OWNS ONE. ONE WHO HE CALLS HIS INVESTMENT CONSTANTLY. THE BROWN GIRL HE OWNS IS ALSO HIS LOVE INTEREST???????” PLEASE. STOP SWEEPING THIS UNDER THE RUG. THIS SHOULD NOT BE OVERLOOKED. tHIS WAS PUBLISHED IN 2016 HOW IS THIS OKAY yall really out here ignoring some severe issues just because you love this ~tortured past~ ~witty haha~ ~genius schemer~ nasty vile 1 dimensional boring brick of a character
Matthias.
The character with growth and depth. The love interest of the other character with depth.... suddenly dead. His death was so dumb. It really came out of nowhere. We go through all this with him just for him to be expendable. No one even cared? Nina did, but the others didn’t have any thoughts about it. He did not deserve this. Nina did not deserve this. If anyone had to be viciously coupled, it should have been them. It made sense for them.
I wasn’t really planning on doing a full review, I didn’t want to put the effort in. But it kept bothering me, and I’d remember more things that bothered me. So here we are. I didn’t want to just hate on a book without thoroughly getting into it.

Hey, here's my latest post over on my main blog:
For those who have been wondering “what ever happened to Skye Sweetnam?”, here’s a surprise for you. Sumo Cyco is a punk rock/metal band out of Toronto, where Skye Sweetnam now resides as lead singer, under the alter ego of Sever. With MD13 (Matt Drake) on lead guitar and Thor (Ken Corke) on bass guitar, Sumo Cyco have produced two albums, a live EP, a number of cover singles and a tonne of music videos. I had intended to write a review of their first album, but by the time I got to it, their next album was just around the corner, so here’s a review of that instead.
When I first discovered Sumo Cyco, I was a bit horrified at the turn Skye Sweetnam’s musical style had taken. But after giving it a chance, I actually started to really enjoy it. And when you consider the transition from Noise From The Basement to Sound Soldier, you start to see how she got here; From punk pop, to punk rock, to punk metal. This evolution makes even more sense when you find out that some of the other members of Sumo Cyco used to be part of Skye’s tour band. Skye has said that her aim with Sumo Cyco was “to be able to sing any style..[and] to not feel constricted by genre”, which shows in the variety present on both Lost In Cyco City (Sumo Cyco’s first album) and Opus Mar (their second album). Sometimes it can border on screamo or growling, sometimes it sounds like rap, and sometimes it can feel more like power pop, but mostly it falls under the general banner of metal. Skye herself has classed the band’s music generally as “dancehall metal”, inspired by UK band Skindred . I’m no heavy metal connoisseur, but I can tell you Sumo Cyco produces a punchy, yet danceable fusion of punk metal with any number of other styles in any given song. So even if you don’t much like some song, you’re likely to find one you do (unless you can’t stand rock/metal at all, in which case, this is not the band for you).
As I mentioned, I was going to review Sumo Cyco’s first album, Lost In Cyco City, but I never quite got around to it. Suffice to say, I liked its unique blend of fiery, soaring vocals with shredding guitars and body-shaking drums. Surprisingly, it reminded me, in parts, of some of Paramore’s really early stuff, but with less emo and more metal. So when I heard they were crowdfunding a new album through PledgeMusic, I was excited but cautious. While I enjoyed their first album, much of the music Sumo Cyco had released before that had been much heavier, and I was worried this new album might tip into territory outside my comfort zone. Ultimately though, the main thing that stopped me from pre-ordering was the cost. Shipping to Australia, plus a poor exchange rate, meant a copy of the CD alone would have set me back just under AU$50, which is just too much for a CD. Instead, I spent the first few weeks after the album came out repeatedly listening to it on Spotify. Now that I’m convinced of its quality, I’ll be buying it directly.
Sumo Cyco also posted a series of videos explaining the meaning and writing process behind each track on Opus Mar. I wrote most of this review before watching those videos, so I could give you my uninfluenced impressions and interpretation of the songs, but I did watch them later, so I could give a more definitive comment on the message of each song. Before watching the videos, I was a bit worried that hearing their meaning might make me dislike some of the tracks. However, it turned out that it only made me like most track even more.
As with my other album reviews, I’ve listed previous songs each track reminds me of (by Sumo Cyco or just Skye Sweetnam), with the album they come from, a rank for each track on this album, as well as a short comment about each track. Plus there’s an overview of the album as a whole at the bottom.
1. Anti-Anthem
Reminds me of: My Name Is Rock N’ Roll [Lost In Cyco City], Interceptor [Interceptor] Rank on this album: 4 A perfect opening track, Anti-Anthem sets the tone for the whole album, with its blend of punk rock, heavy metal and modern pop elements. It starts with faux radio noise, which instantly reminds me of the previous album, which also used effects like this to open. It’s a bit of a misnomer, but the band claims this was on purpose, because it’s arrogant to declare your own song an anthem. But the meaning behind it runs deeper than that, being about the plight of stateless refugees, with literally “no place to go”. The vocals really open up towards the end, and the track closes with more sample dialogue.
2. Free Yourself
Reminds me of: Brave [Lost In Cyco City] Rank on this album: 1 Probably the catchiest track on the whole album, Free Yourself stuck in my head from the moment I heard it. With a heavy rocking intro, memorable chorus, relentless drums, and slick guitar riffs, this song is a perfect illustration of why I love this band. If you want to introduce Sumo Cyco to a friend, this would be my go-to track. It’s a fantastic anthem of self-reliance and looking to yourself for strength, rather than outside world.
3. Move Mountains ft. Benji Webbe
Reminds me of: (Let’s Get Movin’) Into Action [Sound Soldier], Like A Killer [Lost In Cyco City] Rank on this album: 9 Tracks with featured artists are often divisive, and Move Mountains is no different. On the one hand, it’s an epic song with a dead simple, yet catchy hook, thumping drums and bass beats. I think I even heard a Wilhelm scream in there! On the other hand, Benji’s vocal part stands in stark contrast to Sever’s. While stylistically similar, his sound is so different and just wasn’t something I much enjoyed. For me, Skye’s vocals are one of the main points of attraction, so anything that reduces that is bad in my book. That said, I understand that it was a really big deal for the band to have one of their idols perform with them on the album (Benji Webbe is the frontman for Skindred), and the track grew on me. I can imagine a really awesome superhero-based music video for this song, which I hope gets made one day.
4. Passengers
Reminds me of: We Ride [Lost In Cyco City], Mercy [Live Sessions 1] Rank on this album: 11 Passengers delivers heavily on the two big themes of this album: the need for social change on Earth, and trains. It paints a vivid picture of how the earth is being destroyed, and we are all just passengers, along for the ride. It implores listeners to stop ignoring what’s happening and “fight for the promised land”. Even though they’re Canadian, the band said this track was also partially influenced by the USA election of 2016. Musically, Passengers delivers shredding guitars and drums, with a strange Maroon 5-esque bridge with electronic vocals.
5. Brave II
Reminds me of: Crowd Control (Do What We Want) [Lost In Cyco City] Rank on this album: 5 Apart from its name, Brave II shares little in common with Brave, my favourite track from the original album. This song wears its meaning quite clearly on its sleeve, talking openly about the rise of conflict, extremism and echo chambers that exist in the world today. It encourages the listener to fight this wave of fear and anger with love, tolerance and open-mindedness. It would make a perfect backing track to a protest video. The band have said that the song was also influenced by the numerous shooting that have taken place in recent years in music venues, and is about having the guts to keep on doing what you want to, rather than living in fear or terror.
6. Sleep Tight
Reminds me of: Hypocrite [Noise From The Basement], Human [Sound Soldier], Cry Murder [Lost In Cyco City] Rank on this album: 7 Sleep Tight opens with a softly-spoken intro, back by an endless guitar riff, which gives way to smashing guitar, and screaming verses. The bridge has a weird disco vibe to it. This song is about how money serves as the unspoken motivator for many, and how it drives marketing and the media to pull the wool over our eyes, in aid of capitalism.
7. Rivalry
Reminds me of: The Ugly [Lost In Cyco City], Shot To Pieces [Noise From The Basement] Rank on this album: 2 Based on the experience of a fan dealing with suicide and depression, Rivalry is about facing your inner demons, and using music to fight the negativity. It’s solid rock all the way, with a punchy, pseudo-rap break for a bridge. Glitch effects and distortion add extra colour to vocals, which reminds me of the last Garbage album, except they work really well here.
8. Kids of Calamity
Reminds me of: Fuel My Fire [Lost In Cyco City], Danger [Danger] Rank on this album: 12 Like it’s compatriots, Kids of Calamity focuses on the need for social change in the world. Specifically, in the way the previous generation is leaving the planet for the next. It is a call to arms for this new generation, to rise up and be better.
9. Won’t Put Me Out
Reminds me of: Go Go Go [Lost In Cyco City], Permanent Holiday (Locked in the Trunk of His Car) [Live Sessions 1] Rank on this album: 6 With one of the calmest opening by Sumo Cyco’s standards, Won’t Put Me Out is a slow burn that builds through call-and-response verses. Ironically, this track is about being in the zone, on stage. There’s a great, stompy guitar riff that gives the track a vague tribal vibe.
10. Words
Reminds me of: Fighter [Lost In Cyco City], Ultra [Sound Soldier] Rank on this album: 3 Wordscombines fast, rapped verses with a simple, yet endlessly catchy chorus hook. The thing that sucked me in was the pop culture references in the first verse. The track, which is about the way people twist each other’s words when they fight, closes quite appropriately with distorted vocals seemingly glitching out.
11. The Broadcasters (Murdering by Radio)
Reminds me of: Where Do We Go? [Where Do We Go?], We Ride [Lost In Cyco City] Rank on this album: 8 The Broadcasters starts, unsurprisingly, with the sound of a radio tuning. It’s mostly rap, backed by a gruff chant, that builds to each chorus, with soaring vocals in the bridge.
12. Rally
Reminds me of: Limp [Limp] Rank on this album: 13 Rally opens with a racing guitar riff, which never lets up. A call-and-response chorus and crashing cymbals help keep the pace. The ending is a refreshing surprise, with light acoustic guitar and sweet vocals.
13. Building Castles
Reminds me of: Scary Love [Sound Soldier], Loose Cannon [Loose Cannon] Rank on this album: 10 Building Castles tries to end the album on a high, positive note, talking about the reward for pushing through times of struggle. With a complex instrumental intro, and a bridge that reminded me of Lady Gaga, or Yiddish music full of running arpeggios, musically Sumo Cyco furfills their goal. The train metaphor is completed as the song fades out to railway noise.
As a whole, Opus Mar flows really well. When I first listened to it, I didn’t even notice the transition between some of the track. It feels like one continuous musical journey, with endless variety and passion. In that way, it sort of reminded me of a live set, but much cleaner and crisper than live albums characteristically are. That said, each track stands well on its own, with some really coming into their own when listened to apart from the rest of the album.
Skye Sweetnam has always packed her lyrics dense with meaning and references, and with the amount of rap on Opus Mar, that’s truer than ever before. Yet every song still has a catchy, strong, and memorable chorus. All the song seems to be going at a million miles an hour; much faster than the last album, which had some pockets of solid, calm groove. Every track on this album also seems to have a bridge of one sort or another, be it in the form of a rap break, or a brief interlude in a totally different musical style, which really helps keeps some of the tracks feeling fresh. Skye’s voice have always been amazing, and this album is no exception. That said, her sweeping, sweet yet powerful vocals are far less common on this album. As mentioned, it has a lot more rap and gruff metal voice than the last album, which will not be to everyone’s taste. For me, the addition of these elements wasn’t as off-putting as the loss of what they supplant. Although the scarcity does make those rare moments all the more powerful.
Many of the trimmings of modern music are here: reverb, distortion, glitch effects and the like. However, while these sorts of tricks are often employed to disappointing or plain-out distracting ends, they all seems to fit quite comfortably here. They’ve been used in ways that suit the style of music, and are appropriate within each track.
One thing I was surprised by, and on reflection sort of impressed by, is the fact that there are no explicit tracks on the album. Despite the fact that the whole album is about the sometime frustrating and seemingly hopeless quest for social change, Sever never resorts to swearing to get her point across.
The two main themes of this album, as mentioned above, are social change and trains. While the reoccurring train motifs are little more than a novelty, the push for social change is anything but. Sumo Cyco has clearly chosen to take a stand with this album, and make a statement about how they view the state of the world today, and what needs to be done to improve it. Almost every song makes mention of how terrible the world is these days, and how we can help change that. There’s definitely a sense of doom and gloom to it, but what makes it so impactful is that there’s also a sense of hope and empowerment too. Although Sumo Cyco is from the “Great White North”, their message seems to resonate remarkably with what’s been going on in America. No doubt it’s applicable all over, and has been for a while, but it feels much more present in people’s minds now.
Overall, Opus Mar is a strong, impactful, timely and rocking album full of music with a message. It may not be what you expect to hear from the teen popstar we knew as Skye Sweetnam, but that doesn’t overshadow its quality. While there are elements of the previous album that I preferred, there are also elements here that are an improvement. Between the two is a fascinating fusion which I hope to hear on Sumo Cyco’s third album, whenever that may appear. In the meantime, this is a solid entry into a fast-expanding catalogue that I hope will make people, not only dance, but think.
RATING: 8/10 – ★★★★★★★★☆☆
But you don’t have to take my word for it…Listen to the album for yourself, and make up your own mind. Then you can let me know what you think of Sumo Cyco’s Opus Mar.
So, have you ever heard of Sumo Cyco, or Skye Sweetnam? What’s your favourite songs of theirs? Did you pre-order Opus Mar? What do you think? Did it live up to your expectations? Have I said anything you disagree with? Tell me & everyone else who passes through here what you think in the comment below.
To Infinity and Beyond,

I want to encourage everyone thinking about taking this class to get it, as it is the BEST programming class I’ve seen on anywhere and I’ve tried more than a few of them. If you are looking for an excellent swift programming course, stop there here because you have found it. You will learn Swift from the very beginning of programming all the way through making your own apps that you can upload to the App store.” – Ian Hopjins
“SO GOOD!!! Retention rate is incredible because Angela does a great job in explaining and teaching every aspect of what we are doing. Most of the other instructors on Udemy put code on the screen and pretend nothing happened. This course is amazing! 5/5″ – Muhammad Ibrahim
“Angela is a spectacular teacher!” – Marco Zanirato
“This course was terrific. Only after taking a few more courses from others that I realized how good this course was. This course taught me more than I was expecting, it provided great instructions and a lot of hands-on tasks to drill-in the concept.” – Marc
“Best use of your money! I was a complete beginner but Angela made me a pro in weeks.” – Burak Tunçbilek
“IT IS #1!!!!!!!!! Absolutely Amazing. The best iOS course i have ever taken. Angela explains everything the way it needs to be explained, so everything is easily understood. Are you trying to choose between all the different Flutter courses on Udemy? Take a look at what students on my course had to say about this:
I have revamped my expectation for what a 5 star course should be for Udemy. Angela, you’re awesome! I already rated the course as 5 stars early on (at about 20% completion), but after completing roughly 70% of the course, I can say this is my favourite Udemy course as of today. Brilliant course Angela! – Alberto L
“I took a lot of courses on Udemy and elsewhere and non of them were as clear and perfectly paced as this one! Angelas approach is really awesome, deep and clear.” – Žan Fras
“I have taken several iOS courses, so far this course had the best explanation on swift and xcode documentation. The lecturer is kinda humorous sometimes which make this course even more enjoyable.” – Bryan Pukanda
“I have taken lots of courses on udemy and elsewhere for self learning and i can tell you with all the honesty this is one course which i did not want it to end. It is like one of those movies that you wish keeps going. Whatever concepts are covered were covered very beautifully and made learning quite simple. I got so many answers to Why? in this course like how closures work and why they work that way… why delegates work that way. Thank you so much for this course.” – Arun Lakhera
“I compare this to another top iOS class on Udemy, but I think that this one beats it. The reason? Angela doesn’t show you a plethora of material and then say that we will discuss this later, or say “just do this. You will see why later.” She goes into the reason for doing something before doing it.”  – Clyde Addison

"Angela is my favorite Udemy professor for coding courses. Her methods for building onto the material so that you're never progressing too fast or too slow make for a really engaging learning experience. She's thorough in her explanations and uses fun projects to discuss the material. She goes into the reason for doing something before doing it."  - Clyde Addison

Over the past few years, the REST has become a de-facto architecture for the web services, which emphasize to communicate through the textual data. The user is given a URI of the resource and user can perform various operations (GET, POST, DELETE etc) defined on that address, as simple as that. There are several architectural points that reflect upon the ideology of the REST. These points deserve a short review before we move on to the Graphql:
Starting with the Null Style: When a developer starts developing a service or application, she might have an image of what she is going to create but still, she has to start from zero. She can design this application in any way, expand it with no boundaries, having the final interfaces of the application in her mind.
Client-Server: The client and server implementations must be developed and flourished independently. The user interface should not be aware of the implementation of the server side services. Though there should be a mechanism through which client requests the server for some resources and get exactly what she needs. REST does this by providing the URIs.
Stateless: The request from a client to server must contain the necessary information in it so that server can understand what the client needs but it should not depend on any previous information shared between the two. This is a trait inherited from the early web architecture. The modern web can store the session information on server and client sides. The request information can also be stored in the cookies.
Cache: The cache on the user side can improve the network efficiency. In REST, each response can be labeled as cacheable or non-cacheable. The cached response can be used for the response of the request rather than asking the server so we can eliminate the communication between the server and client up to some degree. Though, the shortcoming of this feature is that if a server has some new information for a cached request the client might not get the updated information.
Uniform Interface: Through the uniform interface of the application, the architecture of the application is simplified in a generalized manner. The application of the interface can be altered in many ways but the interface remains intact. With uniform interface, there come four constraints –
Resource identification in requests: The resources can be identified in requests, like with URIs in web APIs.
Resource manipulation through representations: The client can inform the server to perform some operations on the resource, like GET, POST, DELETE, PUT etc in web-based APIs.
Self-descriptive messages: The request can have the information about the message through their formats attached with the request, like MIME Types in web-based APIs.
Hypermedia as the engine of application state: The initial URIs given to the client to access the APIs can be used to pass the hyperlinks of more APIs available or newly created. It’s analogous to the HTML pages which include the hyperlinks to more pages available on the server. Hence it makes the APIs dynamic that can evolve over time and client can leverage that.
Layered System: The REST further can be extended to build layers of the communications. There can be layer(s) which can talk to just one layer and not beyond that. It hides the details of the system implementation. In modern scenario, we can see the service locators, load balancers, proxy servers, layers within server farm etc.
Code-On-Demand: The REST allows the client to get the code from the server to execute on its end. It extends our system and delegates some processing from the server to the client. Though, it’s an optional constraint of the REST architecture.
Shortcoming of REST
REST is beautiful. It might appear elegant as well. Though, it’s not really a better solution for communications always. For example, GitHub provides various APIs to be accessed publicly. One of them is https://api.github.com/users/{username} and the API returns all the public information of the user in JSON format. If we need to get the name of the company where the user is working, we can read the ‘company’ key from the JSON. But along with this JSON data, we’re also getting 28 more redundant keys. These values may not hold much significance to the API consumer, but this redundant data will be traveling from GitHub servers to the API consumers, that is there is an unnecessary load on network and API consumer (the data will be sitting in the memory of the consumer system). Besides the data transfer between systems, another problem is processing of the information. The big JSON text will still be parsed and processed by the API consumer. What we need is a better solution, that can provide the ease to access the needed data only. In our example we need is the name of the company where the user works. With REST, we can do this by creating one more REST endpoint that returns the company information of the user. One such endpoint could be https://api.github.com/users/{username}/company . That sounds like a solution to our problem! Is it really? If we have 30 fields/keys of the user information, then we need to create the 30 REST endpoints. That’s a big number of APIs to maintain (just for user information).
GraphQL – The awesome REST
GraphQL allows us to mention the fields that we want for some entity. In our example case, we can ask the server to return only the company name, if server handles the GraphQL queries.
The fun part about the REST is we get to write the queries as if we are calling the functions of a programming language. We ask the server to either process/query some data and along with that, we pass the field names which we need from the server after the server is done with it job.
One thing that would tickle one’s mind is why the architectural points of the REST were mentioned in the starting of the blog post! Well, it’s just to emphasize the point that GraphQL still follows all of that. Though, GraphQL requires the API consumer to send the requests usually in POST method (in some cases other methods like GET as well, we can pass the query encoded into the URL, but then the server needs to decode that query and process it). So, GraphQL is still REST-ish, plus the fast response from the server and less load on the networks.
The elegant part of the GraphQL is that we can use just one URI for our APIs. We can either ask the server to give some data, or process some data sent by the client or even open the stream of the data between client and server – all on the same URI. Another good part of the GraphQL is the ability to write the queries in the code-like structure. The client can write the queries that look like a function in any C-like programming language; the functions can also accept the arguments.
query findUser($userId: String!) {   findUser(id: $userId) { name } }
This is a simple query that asks the server to return the name of the user with id equals to userId. The userId argument can either be hard-coded in the findUser() function or it can be mentioned in the variable field of the GraphQL JSON. Wait, did I say “GraphQL JSON”? Yes, we send the graphql in JSON format to the server, wrapped in key-values; though it’s not necessary to do so, it all depends on how the server accepts the query and parses it. We, at Knoldus, use the Sangria library for Scala and all it cares about is
the query (which is a mandatory field and can be the mutation or subscription or a query),
the variables (it’s optional) and
the operation name(it’s optional as well).
So, it’s easy to keep all these together in a JSON format.
The beginners might also want to know what are all these terms after all! The query, mutation, operation, fragment, data-types, schema, fields etc. For the brevity sake of this blog post, these terms and much more about the graphql can be explained in future blog posts.
