the thing is. ryne was not suicide ideating solely because thancred was a bad guardian to her. that was a mindset she had literally as long as she can remember, one that was beaten into her by ran'jit and vauthry telling her that she would be better off dead. thancred (due to his trauma + emotional constipation + daughter-based trolley problem) does not manage to heal this mindset in her by the time we meet them in 5.0 (to be frank this would be an uphill battle for most caretakers, even ones who don't have the significant enotional shortcomings thancred has), but what does allow her to stand up to ran'jit is the freedom thancred provided her. she isn't sure if she deserves to live, but she wants to live in the world that she has traveled in. she doesn't want to be put back in that cell. she doesn't know if she's perfect, if she's the "best" minfilia, but she wants to see the world and live as part of it, even if it's scary, even if she hates herself and thinks she's worthless. she wants to see the sky and the trees and to help the people she loves. certain parts of ryne's arc hit me really hard (as someone who was a suicide-ideating teenage girl, and is now... no longer a teenage girl) and this sort of... "incomplete" personal resolution works for me. she managed to scrape out the smallest handhold of wanting to live, but it's enough. it's enough to keep her from giving up on her life. the smallest handhold is enough to hold onto, always. that's the miracle. "to live is to suffer", to quote hydaelyn, but "wanting to see what tomorrow will bring," to quote gaia, is enough. the vast majority of people who attempt regret it, and are glad they failed/didn't go through. you don't need to be convinced your life has worth in order to keep living. this got off-track and a bit personal hahaha, but she's my daughtermelon and her story hits hard. im glad she's happy and thriving, and so is thancred (another person who hates themself and wants to die but refuses to do anything but survive), and so is ryne.

Thancred and Minfilia/Ryne tragic sibling relationships fuck me up Im constantly writing them already myself and getting to ShB and seeing the sort of "my sister died and Im looking after her kid" vibe Thancred and Ryne had going and how Ryne's relationship to Minfilia also REALLY felt to me like the kid who's mom died giving birth/when she was young and she only grew up hearing about her from everyone else I just-- damn that's some good dynamics

Q'ihnn Tia and G'raha Tia this was a joke initially, it was a "hey wouldnt it be funny if they were ex boyfriends" when I was running the raids and then I got to ShB and got hit over the head with THAT and well now they're getting married aha they're just really sweet and they deserve the happiness of being together

Zana and Alphinaud Leveilleur these two stupid teenagers are in love and they're adorable. I would die for them. I'd kill for them without hesitation. he immediately had a crush on her and she immediately threatened to kill him and then their character arcs just lined up in a way where they're inseparable now and I love em a lot, they're real cuties. also they're like a mini Q'ihnn and G'raha too which I always think is funny to have like father like daughter shit with Q'ihnn and Zana lmao

Kerrich Drachman and Ophianne Vilauclaire I actually hadn't thought about these two much until recently but the dynamic is deeply compelling to me now - Kerrich and his adoptive kids as a whole vibe was always only ever something I really thought about with Estinien and Q'ihnn, with all three of them being dragoons, but Ophianne is the kid MOST like him and also the one he just... kinda ignored. didn't worry about. he wasn't training her and she could handle herself, he didn't feel like he needed to worry about it, but now she's grown and she just... doesn't want anything to do with him. she never did, she never wanted a father figure even as a kid, but she certainly doesnt want one now. and Kerrich is my canon's 1.0 WoL so his entire dynamic with Bahamut is, well, complicated... and Ophianne is a summoner. in fact she's more closely tied to the actual dragon that was Bahamut than the primal. the symbolism alone in that in their relationship is driving me insane and im really gonna hammer into it going forward as much as I get the chance

I couldn't find anything from my published ffxiv stuff since it's either been overwritten or incorporated elsewhere, but this is a bit I cut from a post-5.3. shb wip since I changed my mind about some details:

She has a tradition now to make her rounds of welcome as soon as she arrives. Today, this includes Lyna, Cylva, Beq Lugg, and Moren, too, though she does not stay for long. The headache is making her nauseous. As Ryne is not in the Hortorium, she leaves a message for her before retiring to her inn room.

24. How do you recharge when you’re not feeling creative?

Ahh burn out. 😭 I write for work, so this is something that I struggle with a fair bit since work doesn't wait for me to have a break and catch up.

Right now, I try to get at least 100 words written every day. It doesn't matter the quality, it doesn't matter what fic I'm working on, just 100 words of something. Writing is like a muscle; you need to work it to keep it in shape. The longer a break you take, the harder it will be to get back into it. Building it as a habit helps me maintain it in the long term.

But re-charging is still important. If I feel stuck or worn out from the thing I'm working on, I try to be creative in other ways (right now that's music! I play piano and clarinet, and it's been so nice getting back into that). Relaxing with a book or TV show or video game is good, too--sometimes you need to get swept up in another story for you to come back to your own.

FFXIVWrite2023 Prompt 16: Jerk

Putting one of my older stories here, because it applies for the noun definition of jerk.

The battle against Ranj’it had been difficult; but Thancred ultimately succeeded, though no worse for wear.

He’d been waiting for Shuri to return with Ryne, seeing the younger girl’s hair having changed. It appeared she made her choice.

And he had to make one too. One to make right--to make amends--with the Au Ra who was so furious with him, who now approached him to check the extent of his injuries.

“I’m fine, Shuri,” Thancred muttered with a dismissive wave of his hand.

“You received far too many blows to the head to be considered fine, idiot.” Shuri huffed and, with a flick of her wrist, she changed into her mage glamour. Urianger approached, clearly ready to heal Thancred instead, but Shuri gave the astrologian a faint smile and a nod of her head and he backed down.

If that wasn’t a sign for Thancred to make amends now, then it would never come again.

“A word in private, Shuri?” he asked, as the Xaela began to tend to Thancred’s wounds. Mismatched irises lifted to his face, brow quirking upward. “About what?” she countered.

“I think you may know.”

Shuri continued to look at him silently before nodding with an exhaled breath. “All right, Thancred,” she allowed, sheathing her staff. “A word in private, then.”

Getting to his feet with a grunt, Thancred walked away from the group, Shuri following. Alphinaud and Alisaie made a motion to follow, concern clear in their eyes; they knew the history between the two. Shuri glanced back at the twin, waving a hand to them and giving them a soft smile. “It’s fine, you two,” she assured. “Just a word with Thancred.”

She had always been so kind like that. Thancred never could have seen Shuri any differently if he tried. She was always smiling, always gentle and kind. She would put everyone else first before her own wellbeing. It was one of the things Thancred loved about her.

His expression hardened at the thought that flitted through his mind. Thancred realized only too late of Shuri’s adoration for him--and it was when he lost her to another. Estinien treated Shuri far better than he ever could, not shying away from the Xaela’s love for him.

Thancred had said cruel things to Shuri in regards to her relationship with the retired Azure Dragoon.

Once there was distance between them and the others, Thancred turned to the Xaela. She was still as delicate as when he first met her in Ul’dah, yet there were subtle changes from the numerous battles she had fought. There was a certain weariness about her that he knew that one day, she would hang up her mantle.

“What did you want to talk about Thancred?” asked Shuri, crossing her arms over her chest, her head canted to the side as she scanned him with those winter eyes. She was pale as the moon and her eyes were the embodiment of winter itself. He could count how many times he’d lost himself in her eyes, even when saying such despicable things.

“I’m sorry.” The words left him, lacking the usual grace in which he had once dazzled her. He, too, was hardened by battles and loss. “It was not right, for me to lash out at you. To insult you and your relationship with Estinien. I...I had no right to feel envious and to hurt you like that.”

As he spoke, Shuri listened, her expression slowly softening as her arms lowered from her chest just slightly. “You think I was hurt by that? Angry surely, but not hurt.”

Thancred’s own eyes widened at her words and Shuri took his silence to continue. “You’ve hurt me once, and only once. When I confessed my feelings for you, you distanced yourself from me. You never gave me an answer until someone else healed my broken heart. You say you have no right to be jealous--and you would be correct. We were never anything more than friends and comrades. You made that very clear.”

So that was how the Xaela saw it. After Minfilia gave herself to be the Word of the Mother, when Shuri confessed her feelings in a flurry of grief, Thancred simply kissed her on her forehead and walked away. He did put distance between them, a gap so vast that Shuri gave up and nursed her broken heart. Thancred was in the lifestream in the duration that Shuri and Estinien became close.

And Shuri gazed at Estinien in the same way she once gazed at him.

“However...you are one of my closest comrades. And as hardheaded as you are...” There was a slight laughter in her voice now, “...well, I am still here. As are you, yes?”

Her words brought a faint smile to Thancred’s lips. Yes, she was right; she had gain far more perception than when he first met her. “Yes. As friends,” he agreed, holding out his hand.

And she took it to seal the past behind them.

' now that we know their tricks... they won't get another chance to poison your mind with lies. i'm disappointed in you, minfilia. ' it takes a few moments for the fear to settle over minfilia's tiny frame. she's in her room -- her old room, now without any color or life. like ranj'it drained it as a means to punish her. this was a fear deeply imbedded in her heart, being forced from her new family and shoved into her prison.

while the nightmare grew darker and darker, minnie had no idea she began calling out for her dad. at first a vague whisper, then louder into frightened cries. it isn't until a firm shake of her shoulder that she manages to wake, briefly looking around in terror - expecting to find herself right where she dreads. unusually vivid blue eyes meet gentle green, now trying to catch her breath. ' can i -- ' she sniffs, blinking away tears now threatening to spill. ' can i sleep closer to you and thancred ? it was the same dream. '

OK! We're into Mt. Gulg now, and boy this is gonna be a doozy. I'm doing the dungeon and subsequent trial all in one go, so bear with me for the longer breakdown. In fact, I'm gonna cut here just because it's *that* long, and it's also late night ramble flavored. You've been warned.

The music for Mt Gulg is this fanfare-y thing that really hypes up that this is the end of the long battle we've been fighting, while still leaning into that "holy" theme that sin eaters are associated with. It's got hints of the other themes we've heard throughout the expansion, too.

For NPC commentary... I took Thancred and the twins again. Thancred comments on the first boss - if you watch the ShB trailer, they've fought before. I'm sure if had brought Ryne in, she'd have something to say too. Mechanics are decent and mildly annoying for melee dps, but not much to write home about.

Box- I mean, Boss #2 is much more... abstract. Thancred is still the only one with anything to say. Might come back through these later with the others... I enjoy the gimmick for this one the most, having to watch the faces on the evil Rubik's Cube to know where safety is.

The final boss is also Vauthry's last line of defense, and, according to Alphinaud, his "favorite". As we've delved deeper into this dungeon, the landscape has shifted from brown mountain rock to gold and white Light-built finery, a mental image of what Vauthry wants the world to become made manifest. The boss itself is lots of echoed attacks, and it gets a "oh god" out of 10 for how much I have to move around to avoid stuff. Very fitting for where it's at in the story.

So we've beaten Vauthry's defenses, and now we get to stab the man himself... right after we get very proud of some character growth expressions. Alphinaud has recognized that at some point, there is no use trying to talk your way out of a fight. Ryne has accepted Minfilia's legacy completely and is determined to take care of it and the people of the First with all her power, and as a result now has the confidence to speak not only for herself, but for the people. She's come a LONG way from when we first met the quiet, scared girl in Lakeland.

Unfortunately, we can't take the NPCs with us to beat up Vauthry. Not enough for a full party, and they have to watch my back. So... PCs it is!

I don't mind this fight, but honestly Titania was significantly more interesting. There's a couple of add phases, a "find the gap" moving danger puddle, and lots of self-righteous voice lines that I'm going to be hearing in my dreams tonight. I did not, however, get *any* time to listen to the music to see if it felt right for the fight, because it wasn't an NPC party.

The mid fight transformation from blob to "why is he this pretty" is not the most horrifying thing that ShB has done (that's reserved for Tesleen, dammit), but it's close. It's easy to miss how it starts if you're zeroed in on your rotation, but his back literally splits open to kick the change off. I hate it. He gets very bright and stabby after that, but is still no match for the full WoL party that we brought against him.

And then... I'm going to bed. We'll deal with all of the impending emotional trauma tomorrow.

a careful understanding

i have a big WIP about Ellie and Ryne's relationship that is still coming together, but this moment is so clear in my mind @.@; this isn't a perfect resolution of their issues with each other but it's some kind of promise to try and be better.

but the WIP extends long both in front of and beyond this shot lmao 🙃

I've pasted some sections from the scene's rough draft below the cut, about 570~ words in total; they're a little scattershot and skip over bits in between because the scene is really long @.@; but i hope it provides decent enough context.

“I’ve seen the way both of you look at me — and I don’t even blame you. I’m not her, but I bear her mantle. My presence only reminds you both of your loss. Of how the name of this woman you loved has been… perverted into this martyrlike symbol of hope for our realm, one that ensures the fate of Minfilia is to die over and over again.” She sniffs, deeply, and then: “How couldn’t you hate me?”

“Because you didn’t ask for this!” Ellie explodes. “I know this isn’t your fault!”

Minfilia doesn’t budge an ilm. “Do you?”

[...]

“I— you’re just some girl. An innocent girl who’s been swept up into all this — forced to bear a burden you never asked for. I know that. Thancred has to know that.” Her breath has become ragged, and she suddenly finds herself unable to look at Minfilia for entirely different reasons. “…I’ve… done a shite job actually convincing myself of that. So has he.”

A thick silence presses upon the two of them, broken only by quiet sniffs muffled by Minfilia’s knees. Ellie has never felt lower than she does in this moment.

“…This is on us. Thancred and I have been incredibly shitty to you.” She grits her teeth and feels tears brim in her own eyes. “...On some level, I do know that you’re the one most victimized by all of this. You don’t… deserve our treatment. I’m so sorry.”

[...]

“What if I’m not the Minfilia you need, either? Either you, or Thancred… or this realm. [...] After all, gruesome as it was… every preceding Minfilia died to protect the realm. What am I doing out here if it’s not that? Is there some way to help that doesn’t involve doing that… or am I just running away from that responsibility?”

Ellie’s eyes narrow. “Do you think that’s a goal to strive for? That it’s admirable?” [...] “It’s not; it’s tragedy. It’s unjust, monstrously cruel — to yourself and everyone around you. We’ll figure out something you can do — and I’ll be damned if it’s anything remotely in the same arena as sacrificing yourself.” Her voice cracks. “Enough Minfilias have done so. Including the very first one. I don’t want you to join them.”

[...]

“...Th-thank you, Elli—” Minfilia cuts herself off abruptly. “Elilgeim.”

Ellie blinks, then smirks in ironic amusement. Shocking, how long it’s been since she’s heard that. “My friends call me Ellie, Minfilia. It’s okay.”

Minfilia still looks hesitant, her eyes darting back and forth between the hand on her shoulder and Ellie’s face. But eventually she swallows, hoists a nervous smile onto her face, and says, “Okay—thank you, Ellie.”

“That’s more like it.” Ellie scoots a little closer and hesitates for a moment; she’s really unsure about how much she’s pushing here, but she wants to try. So she extends her arm to her side, holding it open and looking at the younger one somewhat expectantly.

And thank the Twelve, Minfilia takes the invitation and fiercely hugs Ellie’s side.

If Ellie had never felt lower than she had five minutes ago, she has in equal measure never felt more relieved now. She’s full aware this—Minfilia’s trust—is a precious gift, and she’s determined not to squander it. She’s starting from a disadvantaged position, given how awful she’s treated the young Oracle so far… she really needs to get her shite together. This Minfilia deserves better.

When Ryne said to Mordred, "You must want her back too. The real Minfilia."

He told her, "What I want or do not want can't, and won't, dictate the life you are still living. I will not want for a lost friend at the cost of you, who are here with me now."

She asked him if Thancred would think the same. Mordred told her the truth, that he didn't know. He wasn't close with Thancred. But that also didn't matter, because even if Thancred was the kind of person to want such a thing, he and Mordred are going to quarrel over it.

"Here you can make your choice," he said. "One way or another, we'll save this world. Because you have asked that of me. But if you'll consider giving your existence up in the bargain, then you must make it knowing it is the most precious, precious thing that you own. The one thing that's always been yours and will always be yours. No one else's. Swear to me."

She swore to him.

And then he escorted her to meet Minfilia.

Later on, after the near-miss with Mordred almost becoming the Lightwarden, Ryne asked him if he was thinking of the same thing when he was so ready to give up his life.

And he said yeah... "I knew I was probably going to die before this is over. A gnashing, violent death befitting a killer."

"Was your life not also precious? The most precious thing that you own?"

"Of course it is," Mordred said. "That's why I was ready to offer it. Being able to do something only I can do to save others in a way only I can do -- that was what sat on the scales before me."

Thancred had been rather upset when Ryne told him what Mordred told her before meeting Minfilia. Thancred said Mordred should've done his utmost to persuade her to make the choice for herself, not tell her that the path where she sacrificed herself was not only present but entirely possible. Urianger also told her gently not to be too hurt; Mordred wasn't good with words, and was blunt at the best of time. He also tended to overestimate youngster.

It was true, Ryne thought then, that Thancred and Mordred didn't know each other very well. Maybe they didn't even get along very well, really. Thancred, and Urianger, like most adults in this case, would do anything to protect her. Especially sway her to one choice over another.

Mordred measured his own words and actions by the weight of what could be gained or lost. Ryne was young, but the problem she grappled with was not. Therefore he told her the whole of it, and told her what he thought about it as a separate thing, and let her decide.

Was it good of him? Was it cruel? The latter seemed to be what the Scions thought, though none reproached Mordred about it to his face. Ryne asked him about it too, since at this point she knew that he wouldn't lie to her. Never.

"I don't know," Mordred replied. "Think about it every birthday, if you want, and once you've decided, you can tell me."

So. Fatebreaker, right? Ryne's biggest fears made manifest, daddy issues personified, yes?

He's an amalgamation of Thancred and Ran'jit, his face, his voice and his weapon is Thancred's, but his body, his fighting style and his words are Ran'jit's.

Throughout the fight Fatebreaker constantly makes comments about how only he can protect Ryne, only he can provide for her, only he has even the right to so much as stand beside her, to be in her general presence. He's possessive and obsessive, repeatedly asserting that she is HIS and his only. Which is exactly what Ran'jit says basically every time we encounter him.

But this time it's in Thancred's voice. This time it's with the voice and face of a man she actually cares about.

Ryne isn't scared of Thancred, she never has been. Even when she first met him she was barely even nervous (as clearly shown in Thancred's short story). There's a lot of different feelings happening between those two, but fear has never been one of them.

But now, after things have gotten so much better, she is scared of Thancred becoming like Ran'jit. Because if Thancred was just a little further gone, if he was just a little less compassionate, he would've. It wouldn't be hard for him to go down the same path as Ran'jit did, to be incapable of letting go of the ghost of that girl he loved so so much to the point he'd stubbornly grip anything close to her he could. He didn't, but the fact he could've is terrifying.

It makes his final words, words that are Thancred's, so very important. This is her deepest fears made manifest, but he still says he wants her to be happy. Her happiness not only matters, but is important to him.

Hi! We presume you mean the bit of dialogue from The Perks of Being A Lost Flower sidequest?

Akadaemia Student: Well, nothing…but that's the point, surely. It must be intended as a present─one meant for Loghrif. Mitron is hopelessly enamored, as we all well know! Blue-haired Student: We do? This is certainly news to me! Though now that you mention it, I suppose I have seen sparks between them… I wonder why I never noticed before? That settles it. We need to hurry back and begin an in-depth observation of their romantic entanglements! I can't believe I've wasted all this valuable research time lost amongst the trees… And I would have wasted even more if not for you, good lady.

By the end of Eden, Gaia has come to accept who she was in her past life and who Mitron/Artemis was to her. The problem is that the Mitron that remained did not see Gaia for who she actually was. She kept seeing her as the Loghrif was the woman she recalled as an Ancient.

It kind of mirrors how Ryne was never Minfilia, even when she went by the same name. Ryne is a completely different person from Minfilia, even if they share a similar destiny. Although it isn't quite full reincarnation, it would be rude for anyone to look at Ryne and just assume she is a clone of her predecessor. I.e "Minfilia like the color pink so you must like the color pink too!" sort of thing.

Gaia acknowledges that although she has lingering affection for Mitron, she is not the same woman. She cannot be what Mitron wants her to be in this life. At first, during the last struggles of the Eden raids, Mitron was stubborn and desperate and only held onto her tighter, going so far as to try and erase her memories of being Gaia. That was too much, too far. Mitron acknowledges this when she finally releases her and lets to go be reincarnated herself.

All of this is still a relatively newly-healed wound for Gaia. She is moving forward, but is still young and surely feels guilty over it sometimes even if she knows she made the right choice.

So honestly, if the Warrior of Light were to pop in and go Hey, I went back in time and heard some students gossiping about how IN LOVE Mitron was with Loghrif ! that would... kind of be a dick move. Even if it wasn't said so casually, what would such a statement even accomplish outside of reopening a wound for Gaia? She probably wouldn't react much at all, or shrug it off as if it didn't bother her (it would have), or excuse herself.

She is understandably sensitive about her past, whether it be as an Ascian or her Eulmoran childhood. She is slowly working through it, but for the most part, doesn't want to focus on it if she can avoid the subject.

FFXIV Reaction: Y'shtola's crush on the WoL

She expected it. She caught the way that Y'shtola looked at you. She would decidedly keep it to herself though. She could have the bragging-rights of knowing about it when you two ultimately get together. For now, she's content with watching you stare at each other in what you think is in secret.

Alphinaud

He would ask Y'shtola or you about your recent closeness. Should either of you deny it, he would be even more convinced. He might even bring it up from time to time only to have the other Scions agree. Although, he did enjoy just watching the two of you interact without anyone saying anything. At least then you wouldn't spend most of the day avoiding each other.

Lyse

She definately knew there was something going on between the two of you. Honestly how did you two manage to not become a thing by now?! She believes that you two are meant to be together. So, just go on and admit your feelings!

Thancred

Oh wow, this is totally unexpected. he saw this come from miles away. You two aren't as slick as you think you are. You both have a major thing for each other. It's about time that you come out with it, eh? We're all waiting.

Urianger

He would know right away. He might even be smug about knowing. It's just amusing to him to see Y'shtola so flustered. She's usually so calm & collected but yet her she was; Master Matoya, avatar of destruction turned to mush by their dearest friend.

WoL

You had a hunch and a hope that she had feelings for you. She was just so brilliant and everything about her drew you in. Not that you minded of course. The more you got to know her, the further you fell for her. Luckily thanks to Thancred, you may have learned that she just might like you back.

Y'shtola

She would not admit it to herself right away. She might think of it as admiration. You were amazing after all. But at some point, she would come to the realization that she was in love with you. And she would then pursue you in secret. Flirt with you ever so little but eventually as she grew bold, she would do it more out in the open. What do you think "I'll take you over the knee" was said for? And you seemed to reciprocate her sentiments, teasing her back. Should that be anyone else, they'd be toast. But you're an exception. Should she have any need to punish you, she'll give you great care afterwards.

Would she ever eventually tell you? Yes. She would just want it to be the right time.

one thing about thancred and ryne is that i think they BOTH project onto the other to some extent. thancred's treatment of ryne is obviously very impacted by how he relates her to minfilia. but as evidenced by fatebreaker - "dread hope" - ryne's perception of thancred is also colored by her other father figure / protector. ryne had already grown up knowing about the other minfilias before her and being told she would never measure up and the best she could do was stay in her cell in the cavernous jail under eulmore. by the time thancred rescues her, she already fully believes she is an inferior version of the girls/women before her, and thancred's close relationship with the PEAK minfilia makes it very easy for her to perceive their relationship as thancred begrudgingly taking care of her because she's the closest thing to HIS minfilia. and while that's a little bit true, it isn't anywhere near the whole truth, i don't think. (and obviously none of this is "her fault" - she's an abused and traumatized child with an unimaginable burden on her tiny little shoulders. of course that's gonna effect how she sees the world and the people close to her)

i really wish we got to see/know more of ryne's "before" wrt her character arc - what was her life of captivity in eulmore like (thank you e11 for the crumbs)? what did she know how to do when thancred first got her out - how actually "helpless" was she, what skills did she lack, what basic knowledge of the world was she ignorant of? and (my favorite): what was her and thancred's relationship like before the WoL arrived on the first? because the WoL arriving on the first was the cause of her running away to go find them in an effort to Be The Original Minfilia, and i do think that that incident affected how thancred behaved for a lot of shadowbringers. the fear from her getting captured again by her abusers! the turmoil over that being a clanging alarm that she is getting close to Her Big Existential Choice!

and in the end, both of them meet with who the other saw in them. ryne chooses to continue to live, even if she doesn't totally feel like she deserves to, even if she isn't the strongest minfilia, even if it's difficult and painful. and the original minfilia embraces her and gives her a bottle of hairdye and is finally able to rest. and thancred basically dies to keep ran'jit from having control over ryne, and is reborn as A Better Dad. and then (because while ran'jit is thancred's foil, thancred also operates as one for emet-selch) he accepts and embraces ryne as an individual person who of COURSE deserves to live. who, while not his first sisterdaughter, is regardless beloved family to him. who he is glad did not sacrifice herself to bring back his mostly-dead glory-days loved one. and then he gives her a name that has nothing to do with their relative traumatic pasts - just their shared time together as a family unit (with urianger. but i don't need to go into That subtext with you)

Anyway, her name is Ryne now because she gets to be her own person. I'm glad they at least like, asked her if she wanted to pick her own name/what she was called before she got possessed by Minfilia.

Don't love that Thancred literally renames this, uh, teenage autonomous person on a journey to find herself, but I get that it's supposed to be a parallel for how he helped Minfilia get a new identity to help her hide from the Empire. Also appreciate that it's apparently a fae word meaning "blessing" in this universe, that's cute and sweet and Urianger's reaction of "you WERE listening to my special interest infodumping!!" was endearing.

It's nice that Thancred wants to make sure she doesn't think he hates her now, but uh, frankly he had his chance lol. I get it from a character development standpoint, but also, no, my kid now. You can have her on weekends if you behave, Thancred. We'll trade off on who gets her for holidays. Make her cry again and you'll be lucky to get supervised visitation; and your supervisor will be Y'shtola, so I still win in that case.
