Comments on “Shetland” season 7 now it’s full aired
Here be spoilers
So first of all, the things I liked:-
- above all: the Lloyd subplot and it’s resolution and why Jimmy left. That was powerful as fuck, and beautiful, and perfect to Jimmy’s character, and a gorgeous bit of subversion for a cop show. He left the police on his own terms, and in order to save an innocent (and awesome!) Black man from the US criminal justice system and general injustice. I loved it, and their scene in the cell was magnificent. <3 I can forgive a lot that I didn’t like about the season for this, because it was the best possible way that Jimmy - whose compassion and recognition of the humanity of others has always been one of the best things about him - to exit the police and the show. Choosing what’s right above what’s legal. Also I really, really liked Lloyd. <3 I hope he has a fantastic life in Norway, or wherever he chooses to settle.
- the scenery continued glorious, obviously.
- Tosh’s character development, and her being left in charge. <3 <3 <3
- Sandy getting to be competent! Billy getting a bit more to do!
- Rhona coming back. <3
- the hugs!
- the wee wallet thief. <3
- by the end of the series I really did care about Connor’s family.
- that first scene between Jimmy and Duncan was good.
Things I did not like:-
- ugh, Meg. I didn’t like her (she came across as desperately callous at times, especially, in wild contrast not just to Jimmy but to most other characters), I didn’t like how she was written, I didn’t like that we never really learned anything about her interests, and above all I hated the Designated Heterosexual Romanceness of it all. I never got the impression that she and Jimmy were particularly into each other, let alone massively in love. The final scene was embarrassingly poorly-written and neither actor seemed that convinced by what they were saying. And no I really am not saying that just as a Jimmy/Duncan shipper! I knew a het romance ending was likely, I just wanted some actual fricking care and attention given to it being a good and convincing romance with actual things in common and chemistry. It’s not like Jimmy’s not had at least some with potential female romantic partners before! Asha especially. That Meg got the family theme music that’s only been used up to now for Cassie and Duncan after, what, 3 extremely lacklustre dates, was just insulting.
- and honestly, would it have been so bad if Jimmy had left the profession and had one final scene with Cassie at the end, bookending the show? Het romance is not the definition of a happy ending or of emotional resolution.
- almost no Duncan, and almost no Cassie. I know there were practical reasons for this (Mark getting double-booked due to the pandemic timing changes; Erin having mostly left acting as a profession). But they both could have been *mentioned* far far more. Jimmy’s family has always been one of the best and most interesting things about him. Cassie was the most important person in his life prior to this season, and Duncan his best friend and someone he was willing to go to prison for in season 6. Why didn’t we get at least Jimmy’s end of a phone call to Duncan to reassure him after the caravan explosion? Why didn’t the two scenes with Cassie have more emotional content? UGH.
- so little Cassie and the total misfiring of the Meg arc meant that well-written female characters were in frustratingly short supply this season, Tosh and Connor’s mother aside. So much more could have been done with Connor’s sister and her wee goth friend, e.g..
- just generally, Duncan was done dirty. After all his growth and changing for the better, that’s how the show leaves him?! After that beautiful arc that resolved in season 5? I mean life isn’t always fair, nor does fiction have to be, but... it feels like he’d redeemed himself and then got wildly punished anyway. And then just ignored.
- the eco-terrorism plot was frustrating in the extreme.
- so much more could have been made of the Shetland folklore angle of things and I really hoped it would be.

Shetland S7E5 my shockingly American thoughts…
Oh, Lloyd, my love with the bad accent, in 1981 a black man in Texas accused of killing a cop would not have even made it into custody let alone get the death penalty.
I hate that I love Meg's sweater. I hate everything about her, but I would love that sweater. Also, she is the most uncompassionate nurse I have ever met. I hire nurses and she would not have made it past my first interview.
(My Mama's input on this scene:
Mama: Well, she isn't Methodist. So, she can go.
Me: What?!?
Mama: Didn't we figure out that Jimmy's dad was a Methodist lay pastor?
Me: um… yes.
Mama: So, she can go and Jimmy can go back to Duncan.
Me: 😳
This is the woman who forgot why she put her cough syrup in the fridge, but she remembers this!)
Wow! Stephen went all Shetland when talking about the Braer. I had to turn on CC to understand him.
I love Billy pulling out the bird knowledge to help the case! He has definitely gotten to shine this series and I am here for it. (I would watch a Shetland with Billy in the lead for sure.)
That photographer has so many secrets.
Wait! Lloyd was trying to pass that off as a Canadian accent?!?! 😳🙄
I love Rhona that is all.
There are a lot more cops and forensic specialists in Shetland now.
Jimmy Perez, where are your freaking gloves!!!
I do love Alison and Lloyd's house.
The new music is… um… interesting. I'm not sold yet.
At least Abby did the right thing with the photos. Good girl!
Jimmy doesn't like other LEOs working on his patch without him knowing, but at least not both black men are suspects. Or at least not for long.
Jimmy did a great job connecting with Danny.
Sandy and Billy were so funny.
Sandy is being competent and intelligent. I am here for it. I love him so it is nice to see him back on form. Kate Kilmuir being gone has reset his brain.
Poor Murray. He.just can't catch a break.
Oh, wow! Sandy has found like 3 clues.
Oooo… Carol Ann might be eviler than just evil. I am hopeful.
The West Wing perfected the Walk 'n Talk in corridors. Shetland is working on perfecting the Stand 'n Sway in corridors.
Why does Jimmy look lighter since breaking up with Meg?
Okay arresting Carol Ann must have been extremely satisfying for Tosh!
I love the vanity at Jamie's. Also, I kinda want this to involve Alan and kinda don't.
If you're upset about an old oil spill, why would you create a new oil spill?!?? I am confused.
Jimmy Perez, boy racer!
Oh man! I want to solve this and get into the good stuff (ie Jimmy and Duncan having a tearful reunion at home and deciding to move to a tropical island together.)
Overall:
Happy with the amount of Meg
Thrilled with the amount of Rhona
Very disappointed with the amount of Duncan
Very disappointed with the amount of Cassie
Competent Sandy makes me happy
Billy is the best!

Okay in my imagined version of whichever series I'm replacing (6 or 7), Jimmy's lost his love for the job and puts in for a sabbatical (Basically a year off on half pay). Duncan, who does not get arrested for assisted suicide because Jimmy doesn't let him get emotionally abused into that position like that, runs his bistro and everything is fine.
Cassie comes home for the summer after a placement falls through and is driven around the bend by Jimmy trying to cook. We're talking burnt custard, seperated cream, accidentally pouring stock down the sink and saving the bones instead of binning the bones and saving the stock, mixing up tartar source and cream of tartar (it happens, okay! We've all been there) and then Cassie being like "Duncan, you need to teach him".
And that's how we get them cooking together and Duncan getting exasperated for how much Jimmy argues despite Not being the expert but Jimmy learning how to make things over time.
And Cassie getting loads of photographs of what her fathers are making together, to the point where she sets up an instagram account for them that works as excellent promotion for the bistro even though Duncan is not the chef at the BIstro.
And if they happen to accidentally make a whole romantic meal together and kiss each other goodnight then so be it.

Shetland Lace Class
Tumblr media
The knitter's guild had Lauren Nelkin, a knitting pattern designer who also teaches knitting classes, host a series of classes this weekend, and I was fortunate enough to be able to snag a spot that had opened up for her class on Shetland lace knitting this morning! These are the swatches I made of the bead stitch and bird's eye stitch, though I mostly worked on the bird's eye stitch at home. There's also a sample of a lace edging that's quite a bit bigger repeat, and a bit more intimidating, that I'll attempt to swatch up later.

Speakers of non-English languages of the UK and Ireland wanted!!
Since it’s World Mother Language Day today (February the 21st), I’m thinking of doing a series of posts on the native non-English languages of the United Kingdom and Ireland, with some information and short interviews.
For this, I am looking for both native speakers/signers and learners (with or without parentage/heritage of the language in question) of the following languages:
- Scottish Gaelic
- Irish
- Welsh
- Any sign language of the United Kingdom or Ireland (e.g. BSL)
- Any other minority language indigenous to the United Kingdom or Ireland. By this I mean primarily spoken only within the UK or Ireland as a minority, or spoken very little elsewhere. For example: Cornish, Manx, Shelta, or Anglo-Romani, not languages like Polish or Bengali that are minority within the UK but have a significant speaker base elsewhere. (I am aware that I am fishing for some of these *cough* Cornish *cough*...but you never know!)
- Any language or variety that you speak that you feel is linguistically / culturally distinct from Standard English that you would like to inform more people about. For example: Shetlandic, Scots, Ulster Scots.
I don’t have anything finalised yet, but if you would be wiling to speak to me about some text-based interviews for the sake of qualitative and informative tumblr posts, please send me a message!
(NB: if I have used any names of languages that are not preferred, tell me and I will change them. I don’t know a lot about the non-Celtic and non-Germanic languages here, which is part of my reason for wanting to make this series of posts in the first place.)
Please reblog so more people see this!

Happy Birthday to the actor Tony Curran born 13th December 1969 in Glasgow.
Tony took to acting while still in his teens, he recalls the days in the Scottish Youth Theatre with Gerard Butler. Young Anthony Curran went on to attend the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama before gaining notoriety with a prominent role on the BBC series This Life. He would go on to make a name for himself in movies with a sci-fi/fantasy bent, like The 13th Warrior, Blade II, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Beowulf, of his small screen credits, our old favourite Taggart returns after not appearing on Kenneth Cranham’s CV yesterday!
Curran has made a name for himself in over the Atlantic in a number of US shows which include, Numb3rs, Medium, 24, Sons of Anarchy and Elementary. His most notable appearances over here have been in the ITV series Ultimate Force, Dr Who, as Vincent van Gogh , and more recently in the E4/Netflix original series Crazyhead.
Tony appeared in the 2018 Netflix film Outlaw King about Robert the Bruce and the Wars of Scottish Independence, where he played the part of Aonghus Óg of Islay, ( Angus Macdonald) chief of Clann Domhnaill. Back over in the states he has recently been in Ray Donovan, which is a great series series and few episodes of the CBS show SEAL Team. He also turned up in the mini series, Your Honor, which also stars the excellent US actor Brian Cranston of Breaking Bad fame, it’s great hearing Scottish accents in US shows, don’t you think?
Tony is another guy I follow on twitter, the guy has a heart of gold, I remember he tweeted “Me and my lass woke up this morning temperatures dropping compelled to help our homeless, loaded up some blankets pillows clothes, sweaters jackets, I’m sure we all have stuff we can donate, it all helps.” He was then out on the streets handing them out to the homeless, Tony was involved in a charity weekender with all funds raised going to St Mary’s & St Alphonsus and the great community work they do. He has in the past played charity football matches in Glasgow.
In the past couple of years Tony has been playing Despero in the Super Hero series The Flash, Tony has also appeared in the US movie, Two Deaths of Henry Baker where he plays a town Sheriff, this year he appeared in the US crime series The Calling, the show has some good reviews on IMDB with a 7.1/10 rating, and in an episode of the US show For All Mankind
Last year Tony appeared in a homegrown project. The two part “series”, Mayflies is set in a Scotland and Manchester in the 80′s Martin Compston co-stars along with new Shetland star Ashley Jensen, it is on BBC1 on December 28th. The show is based on a novel by Scottish author Andrew O'Hagan's book of the same name. It tells the story of Jimmy (Compston) and Tully (Curran) who ignite an “unforgettable friendship” defined by music, films and their shared rebellious spirit in a small Scottish town in the 1980s. if you haven't seen it, please look it up, and keep the hankies close by.
In the past couple of years Tony has appeared in a couple of US series, an unexpected second season of Your Honor and Secret Invasion.
On fame Tony commented;
"I've been lucky. I don't for a minute take for granted the good fortune I have had. You don't like to get ideas above your station, especially a boy from the south side of Glasgow."

The BBC and Red Planet Pictures have revealed that Don Gilet (Sherwood, EastEnders, The Beekeeper, Shetland) will be the new lead detective in ratings-smash crime drama Death in Paradise.
Making his debut in a feature-length Christmas special later this year, before a brand-new series in 2025, Gilet will play Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson - who arrives on the idyllic island of Saint Marie from London, and isn’t overly pleased with his new surroundings…
Gilet has recently begun filming in Guadeloupe, alongside returning Death in Paradise regulars Don Warrington, Shantol Jackson, Ginny Holder, Élizabeth Bourgine and Danny John-Jules.
Don Gilet says: “Being offered the new lead role in Death in Paradise feels like a deeply loved and incredibly precious jewel has been placed in my hands. This is a big show, with a big heart and the love continually grows for it. It is my intention to never lose sight of that and to remain grateful, humbled and dedicated. Even during those testing times when every sinew is screaming at me to run off the set and dive into the sea, swimming pool or an ice-cold beer – whichever happens to be closer at the time!
Tim Key, Executive Producer for Red Planet Pictures, says: “Don is an amazing actor and we’re delighted that he’s joining us as the show enters another exciting new era. We’ve got huge plans for
the new series and beyond, and I can’t wait for the audience to meet Mervin and to see what we’ve got in store...”
Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, says: “We could not be happier to welcome Don to the series. Already known to BBC viewers from the likes of Sherwood, EastEnders, and Doctor Who, he’s long been one of the UK’s most exciting actors. Death in Paradise is in brilliant hands - roll on Christmas!”
Offering the perfect cocktail of sun-soaked escapism, shimmering seas and clear blue skies, the detective drama enters its fourteenth year on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, with its much-loved combination of magnificent murder mysteries and plot twists which leave audiences on the edge of their seats.
BBC Studios, who distribute the series, have now licensed Death in Paradise to over 230 territories across the globe. It was recently announced that following the successful launch of spin-off series Beyond Paradise last year, the Death in Paradise franchise will build on its international success with new Australia-set spin-off series Return to Paradise, airing later this year on the BBC and on ABC in Australia. Death in Paradise is a Red Planet Pictures production for the BBC made with the support of the region of Guadeloupe and internationally distributed by BBC Studios. The feature-length Christmas special and 2025 series will be executive produced by Tim Key and Amy Rodriguez for Red Planet Pictures and Danielle Scott-Haughton for BBC, and series produced by Sue Howells. All series of Death in Paradise are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.

My thoughts on Shetland S7E4
Why would Sandy let Jimmy drive? I mean I get that it is Jimmy's car, but still you can tell from his face that he should not have been driving.
Jimmy is pissed… do not go after his family.
Thank God Tosh is okay, but please get her some therapy.
Poor Donnie. Tosh, please let him in a little more.
Finally someone hugged Jimmy. The totally wrong person, but at least there was a hug.
TOSH!!! Stop it. Stop bottling stuff up
DI Brooks… Seriously, Davy Kane there are more than 20 names in the world. (We all remember Chris and Alice Brooks.) And don't get all suss of Tosh.
Photography guy is creepy.
Lloyd has a weird accent. It sounds vaguely Alabama Correctional Officer.
Man, it is all go in Shetland. Terrorism now.
RHONA!!!!!! Thanks God!!!!
I love Rhona calling him on his bullshit and she finally mentioned Duncan and how hard it is on Jimmy. I want to see Rhona and Jimmy get drunk and Jimmy crying to her about Duncan.
Jaime and Murray juxtaposition was beautiful. The difference between how you see someone depending on your feelings.
Really, Tosh, knock it off. Donnie loves you, even though you can be hard to love.
Cassie!!!! She looks so grown up and gorgeous. Love Alex busting in and Daddy!Jimmy giving him a hard time. (The dress did give me slight maternity vibes, which would be fun.)
Oh, no! Eco terrorism. I am a greenie, but it only hurts us all.
Well, Jimmy might have been wrong about Conner. Poor lad.
Jimmy really can't hide his emotions. That man can walk in a way that says bad news.
Sandy is being competent again. It is nice!!
I have missed Rhona and Jimmy bouncing ideas off each other.
TOSH!!!! Stop it!
Lloyd (and his weird accent) bringing the home truths to Jimmy. Jimmy, you better be thinking about Duncan for some of that.
Talk about rescuing people in relationships, but Meg already told him that she doesn't want to rescue anyone anymore. And Jimmy and Duncan have rescued each other so many times.
Of course it was murder.
Tosh listen to DI (not Chris) Brooks.
I feel like Cassie went through a goth phase. Jimmy seemed to be able to handle Clana easily.
🙄 Of course Meg is there.
How long has this been? It feels like a few days, but I am thinking it is over a week.
Oh… Thanks Jimmy I was right.
Abby being more badass than her Goth friend.
Gorgeous little Kirk. So sad to see it in disrepair. And creepy inside.
Okay, now I get the accent and applaud him! Trying to hide a Texas twang and get husky will give you Alabama CO.
Not that I want Tosh to break down, but thank God! She needed that moment and she reached out to Donnie, so things will be better.
Overall:
Best episode so far of the series.
Finally Rhona
Finally Cassie
Someone acknowledged Duncan
Not enough Duncan
I need Rhona and Jimmy getting drunk together
Too much Meg
Finally some talk of feelings
Impressed I picked up on the accent thing
