Who in DL do you think needs better routes?

This is merely my opinion but while DL got some really enjoyable moments, no route was above average. I suppose this is my way of thinking because I've been through so many otome games that my standards have become waaaay too high. I don't just mean it because of the love interests, since I can think of over 10 games with LIs meaner than the Diaboys were in HDB/MB, but I feel like no route has anything that good to it and they're frequently flawed and poorly balanced.

The development feels way too many times really forced or it barely lasts. I mean, there are some characters who truly seem to have evolved throughout the route but in the last chapters or good endings, their development proves to be completely useless or even worse: it gets erased, which is really sad.

Another thing I’m not particularly fond of is how they turned Yui, in the later games, more into an emotional support rather than the heroine of the story because there are several routes where she’s written to be of no great use and it makes no sense since she’s supposed to be the MC?? I do understand that the love interests need to get the spotlight but the heroine has to be just as active as them. ://

I dislike how some routes attempt to redeem Karlheinz. We already know the reasons behind his actions, and he feels no remorse for those he has harmed, so he does not deserve to be portrayed positively.

DL is already messed up as it is but toxic forgiveness is often portrayed as a sign of kindness, although it’s actually creepy and when it comes to the Diaboys, that’s heavy on Ayato. I understand forgiving someone for yourself because YOU don’t want to hold any sort of grudge or hate in your heart (like Laito did in DF) but forgiving someone after they treated you extremely badly AND still caring for them or being written to befriend them afterwards, is way over the top and if you know such people irl, please check on them because they’re not okay.

The endings are getting so poorly written and I don’t get why. HDB and MB had some unexpected and genuinely interesting endings, but they became less impactful later on, and I swear, some Diaboys have the same endings as others, just slightly modified.

I'm not trying to sound ungrateful because I still love DL; after all, I'm part of this fandom; it's just that I wish the writers would put a little more effort into the routes. I understand how difficult it is to write for 13 different characters, but there are more writers, each with their own ideas, and it is also their job so expecting the Diaboys to get good routes is actually understandable.

this is gonna be a long post since i absolutely LOVE talking about music. you may take this as a music recommendations post lol. also check my DL playlists out if you want to! 💗

SHU — WITHIN TEMPTATION

let's start with some nice symphonic metal! it's pretty obvious since shu likes classical music. he's relatively calm (maybe too much) but there's a storm inside of him: his double side fits this band a lot imo. moreover, within temptation are powerful but also ethereal, so even though they're "heavy" i think he would give a chance to them :D he would occasionally cover their songs on violin if he feels like it.

REIJI — APOCALYPTICA

staying on the symphonic metal side, we have apocalyptica. this band is so peculiar since it's only formed by three cellos and drums, but i can assure you they're metal lmao. they're neat, polished, elegant and mature: all of these are basic reiji traits! (shu likes them too but he listens to them secretly lol)

AYATO — PARAMORE / HALESTORM

here he comes. my lil punk boi. i think about too many artists when it comes to ayato, cause honestly just every pop punk artist does it for me, but early paramore music gives me HUGE teen emo vibes (both angsty and romantic) that represent ayato so well!! i already stated it in my rocker!ayato headcanons post, but he would blast the RIOT! album at every hour of the day.

regarding halestorm, they represent his "darker" side. they're heavier and more aggressively free-spirited. now tell me if he wouldn't sing Love Bites (So Do I) to yui "jokingly" lol.

KANATO — THE BIRTHDAY MASSACRE

how could i NOT associate kanato with the band that basically gave birth to the creepy cute genre, the birthday massacre? their particular goth/industrial sound blending with the vocalist chibi's cute, almost ethereal voice gives so many kanato vibes!! not to mention that the official color of the band is purple lmao. he'd find their album covers very aesthetic, i'm sure of it :D and i also think his fav album would be Violet, the creepiest of them all.

LAITO — LADY GAGA / THE PRETTY RECKLESS

basically laito's two personalities lmao. lady gaga doesn't need any introductions: her provocative and sexy persona shocked everyone and basically all of her songs could potentially be in laito's sex playlist.

the pretty reckless are also indeed sexy, but sexy-depressed??? sexy-angsty?? some of their songs are about embracing one's "dark" side, some others are about dealing with depression (especially in their latest works). i like how they both use the "sexy" façade while actually having more to offer. considering how much laito is broken inside, their music fits so well.

SUBARU — BRING ME THE HORIZON

i'll keep saying this: emo music isn't enough for this guy. this dude listens to metalcore and whatever is heavier than emo pop punk. i actually had issues with picking a band for him cause most of them are casual listens to me but!!! in the end i chose bring me the horizon. angsty emo. pure rage. that's simply subaru for you! sometimes he would sing to their songs in his room but never admit it lol.

RUKI — HIM

honestly, this guy would love gothic rock. i just know it. HIM is the perfect band for him! their dark, elegant, kinda sad sound reminds me of him a lot. and the lyrics too!! they're really poetic, mostly about love and death with a few mentions to eden (pun intended?); the vocalist ville valo often takes inspiration for his lyrics from the books he reads! ruki would definitely dedicate Vampire Heart to yui btw.

KOU — AVRIL LAVIGNE / ICON FOR HIRE

LISTEN. i've been headcanoning this ever since my first DL post ever but kou would be a huge avril lavigne fan. it would mostly represent his frivolous idol persona, but also some of what he hides underneath.

his realest and deepest side is represented by icon for hire. they're heavier, aggressive and talk a lot about sensitive topics. kou has one of the worst pasts among the DL characters and has dealt with pretty much everything going from depression, to abuse, to drug addiction, to suicidal tendencies. i think he'd find some sort of comfort in their songs.

YUMA — P.O.D.

i always pictured yuma as a hip-hop kinda guy, so i think he would like nu metal. being part of the angry and bothered trio with ayato and subaru, he's relatively the calmest one but that means nothing since we're in DL lol. p.o.d.'s passive-aggressive style reminds me of him so much and i swear i ALWAYS think about him when i listen to Youth of the Nation, it's like it talks about him and his brothers specifically.

AZUSA — EVANESCENCE

there are two types of emo: the angry emo and the sad emo. azusa obviously belongs to the second one. i can't really associate him to one genre in particular, it just depends on the ~vibes~, but i chose evanescence for him cause their lowkey eerie, slow style fits azusa a lot. fear of abandonment and selflessness are some of the themes they've covered and Lithium is the song that makes me think about azusa the most.

CARLA — NIGHTWISH

carla has that gothic royal-ish attitude that reminds of the first nightwish era (with tarja turunen as vocalist). i mostly tend to associate the deep, elegant lyrical vocals with carla's deep voice lol. it's just a matter of ~vibes~ again :D

SHIN — FROM FIRST TO LAST

this little shit would only listen to post-hardcore. nothing reminds me of shin more than a cringy "i'm angy >:(" music genre. i actually do enjoy some post-hardcore and from first to last is the exception. i think shin would fit especially in the Dead Trees era, aka FFTL's villain arc™: very silly, angsty and full of villanous vibes but more mature than their previous works.

KINO — AMARANTHE

gamer boi coming through with electronic metal!! amaranthe's futuristic mix of edm and metal + their in-your-face attitude is a perfect match with kino. PvP is THE kino song. the music, the lyrics, the game concept just suit him so well!! slay.

I don't mind the direction they took shu's CL route but I do kind of mourn the loss of the "shu tries to get yuma's memory back" scene we never got. it would've been a really tough thing for him to do, but imagine how sweet it would be.

Yuma's sense of self is kinda on shaky ground, right? I'd say he's still recovering from his last "you aren't the person you thought you were" revelation, so if Shu's going to let him know that his entire memory and concept of the world around him is a lie, then he's going to have to be so gentle with him. He can't just invoke guilt and trauma like he did with Reiji. Besides, he doesn't want to linger on negative memories with Yuma anyway. Yuma hates it when he does that.

So he could try to remind him of good times they've had together instead. This is a change of pace for Shu. All of the happy moments they've shared have been punctuated by tragedy, and Shu is so used to fixating on that tragedy. This would be the first time we'd see him sit down with Yuma and talk about the happiness instead. And, even though Shu is talking to a brainwashed Yuma, this would be the closest Yuma's ever gotten to really understanding what a positive effect he's had on Shu. Because Shu has told the audience stuff like "Edgar taught me how to love life" but he's never told that to Yuma before. Recounting it like this could help both of them out! Yuma might get closer to getting his memory back, and just saying stuff like "there were hard times but I had a lot of fun with you" out loud could help change Shu's outlook. we r healing, baby!!

And of course, the thing that I believe that Yuma will appreciate the most is that if Shu did this, he'd be showing Yuma a great deal of trust. Shu has a LONG history of keeping things hidden from Yuma (he didn't even tell yuma that they were childhood friends! yuma had to remember that himself!!) and it wasn't till the end of Dark Fate that Yuma finally convinced him to tell the truth. Shu's scared, and he feels like he's protecting Yuma by keeping the truth from him. But that's not what Yuma wants or what he deserves. Yuma deserves to know the truth about where he came from, his relationship with Shu, how his village burned, etc. So now that Yuma has lost his memory again, if Shu has learned his lesson and listened to Yuma's feelings properly, he should know that Yuma deserves to know who he really is. Even if it's scary, he has to be brave and tell Yuma the truth.

It would be a real indicator of Shu's character development if he did that! But he doesn't. We can see that Yuma gets frustrated when he doesn't, too. In the Labyrinth End, Yuma believes that it's all his fault—he thinks he was left out of the plan because he wasn't trustworthy enough; that's why Shu kept him in the dark. If Shu could've trusted him more and told him that his memories were false, then Yuma would feel so much prouder later :') Because it's like he and Shu overcame a major hurdle together, not just in the plot but in their relationship.

When Shu explains in canon why he doesn't try to get Yuma's memory back, he kinda brushes it off by saying that "it'll make things too complicated." I don't think he's being honest at all. I think being truthful with Yuma is still so frightening to him, and perhaps it wasn't a step he was ready to take. That's fine. Character development relapses happen in Dialovers all the time, and it's part of what makes the characters and their relationships feel so real.

...but imagine how nice it would've been :')

I'm so sorry but it's unlikely that I'll write 3way endings in OC!MC!. The only otome games I've ever played with "3P" routes were Tokimeki Girl's Side 3 & Ozmafia (that I never finished–) and the former doesn't really feel like a polygamy at all. Besides, everyone is trying to kill each other and it's really a "there can only be one." mindset for the LIs involved cause no one trusts each other one bit. Capo!Reader already has a few days to live, and they're not willing to share that your days with anyone else.

I mean, I'm pretty sure Capo!reader's lifespan would decrease if you both have yandere! alhaitham and kaveh as your lovers. Honestly, good luck getting them to both survive in the first place lmao–

Sayo's Route Masterlist

-Reiji is in the living room of the Sakamaki mansion. He is seated on a chair, trying to stop his foot from tapping on the ground due to his impatience. Shu is lying on the couch opposite of him. Sensing his brother’s growing aggravation, he opens one eye to look at him

Shu: Sayo isn’t back yet?

Reiji: …No.

Shu: How long has it been?

Reiji: It is evening. She did not come home after school yesterday. 

Shu: …She’s with those guys, right…?

Reiji: I can only assume so.

Shu: Has anyone tried to get her?

Reiji: Laito and Ayato wanted to, but I wanted to give her the opportunity to return on her own. She has never been gone this long, however. If she does not return within the hour, I will be retrieving her myself. 

Shu: I see…

-Shu shuts his eyes once more, intending to go back to sleep. A few minutes later, Reiji hears the front door open. He immediately stands, heading for the entrance hall. Sayo is heading for the stairs. He is about to lecture her, but is struck silent when something catches his eye. There is a ring on her finger that he is sure was not there during school the day before

(Reiji: That is not a good sign…I have to do something about this…)

Monologue

Nobody ended up coming to get me from the Mukami manor. I returned to the Sakamaki mansion that evening, ready for a lecture from Reiji and angry comments from everyone else.   As expected, Reiji was the first to see me as I was about to head upstairs to my room. 

Reiji: Sayo. 

-She turns to face him

Sayo: I know I’m home late. I should have told you I wouldn’t be back. 

Reiji: …Forget about that for now. There’s some place I would like you to accompany me to. Put your things away and then come down to the living room so we can go. 

(He’s…not going to lecture me…? He said for now, so does that mean he will later? Either way…where does he want to go?)

Sayo: Uh…alright. I’ll be right back then. 

-She goes upstairs to her room, putting her school bag away before heading back down to the living room. He is sitting in the same chair as earlier, waiting for her

Reiji: Are you ready to go?

Sayo: Yeah. 

Reiji: Then let us be off.

-He stands, leading the way back to the entrance. She finds herself sitting alone with him in the limo as the driver takes them to their destination

Sayo: So where are we going…?

Reiji: You will see when we get there. 

Sayo: You know I don’t really like surprises…

Reiji: Fufu…You are in no position to complain after the stunt you pulled. 

(Yikes…He’s got me there…)

Sayo: …Sorry.

Reiji: You can apologize all you’d like, but it doesn’t mean anything if you continue your behavior. 

Sayo: Next time I’ll tell you then. 

Reiji: I would prefer it if you didn’t repeat this instead.

Sayo: I can’t promise that…

Reiji: Haah…Of course you can’t. 

*Timeskip*

-When the two step out of the limo, Reiji leads her into a cafe

Sayo: Hm? This wasn’t what I expected…

Reiji: I wanted a change of pace. I thought it might be nice to go out for a change instead of staying in the mansion as we usually do. 

Sayo: Not a bad idea. 

-The two order before finding a table

Sayo: Thanks for bringing me along. 

Reiji: There’s no one else I would bring. The others are all annoyances. You are the only one whose company I can enjoy like this. 

Sayo: Fufu…I’m flattered, Reiji. I certainly can’t relax and enjoy a cup of tea like this with any of the others either.

Reiji: …I know this whole situation with the Mukamis hasn’t been a pleasant experience. Laito failed as your guardian, and because of this, you fell into Kou’s hands. I should have stepped in sooner, but I wanted to give him the chance to prove he could succeed for once. 

-He pauses for a moment

Reiji: …At least, I wish I could say that was my only reasoning. I admit that I have felt a bit spiteful that you did not choose me when they first targeted you, forcing us to draw lots. I let Laito continue his harassment because you could have chosen me and avoided this entirely…

-Sayo can only stare in shock

Sayo: Reiji… 

-He suddenly reaches out and grabs her hand, staring at the ring on her finger

Reiji: Kou gave this to you, did he not?

Sayo: …Yes.

Reiji: Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten?

(If he’s focused on the ring…there’s probably only one thing he means…but this is a conversation I really don’t want to have…)

Sayo: Forgotten what…?

Reiji: The day I proclaimed I am going to be my father’s successor. 

Sayo: …I remember.

Reiji: You were chosen as a sacrificial bride. That is why you are living with us. I still intend on making you my bride. If Kou or any of his brothers get in the way of that, we will put an end to them. 

Sayo: Reiji…! That’s going too far!

Reiji: Does he know? 

Sayo: Know what?

-Reiji suddenly smirks

Reiji: That it isn’t just Laito he has to compete with. Laito is a jealous fool that is simply obsessed with possessing you without wanting to admit why he feels that way. He may lash out with reckless abandon if Kou tries to take you. I’m sure Kou has figured that much out by now. But does he know about our history?

Sayo: …!

Reiji: Fufu…I’ll take that as a no. 

*Flashback*

Kou: So I was your first kiss, right~?

Sayo: …! 

Kou: Hm…? I wasn’t? Don’t tell me it was Laito-kun?

Sayo: No, of course not. He’s forced a kiss on me, but he got slapped for that. And that wasn’t my first kiss…

Kou: Then who was it? 

Sayo: Just a silly crush from my old school. It was a while back and nothing came of it. 

(Of course he doesn’t know…How could I tell him…? It would have only made things more complicated…)

Reiji: Shortly after I declared I would make you my wife…surely you remember what happened?

-She glances away, the guilty look on her face confirming it

*Flashback*

-Reiji has Sayo in his arms. He has just finished drinking from her neck

Reiji: Fufu…This is new. Why do you look so embarrassed?

Sayo: You’re too close…Do you really have to hold me so tightly?

Reiji: I didn’t realize it was a problem for you. In that case, I think I’ll hold you even tighter. 

Sayo: Haah…Of course you will…

Rejii: Don’t sound so displeased. Why don’t I give you something you’ll enjoy?

*kiss*

Sayo: …! R-Reiji! W-What?!

Reiji: Fufu…How cute. Shall I give you more?

Sayo: Don’t you dare-! 

*kiss*

Sayo: Mm!

Reiji: You were so flustered you wanted to pretend it never happened…And shortly after, the Mukamis showed up and you got your wish. Laito became your guardian and took up most of your attention. And now Kou is trying to steal you away. Does he know that you’re going to be my wife? Does he know that your fiance has kissed you? That ring on your finger means nothing. He isn’t the one who gets to spend eternity with you.

Sayo: You can’t phrase it like that…! You aren’t my fiance, Reiji! That hasn’t been decided! I’ve said from the beginning that whatever your father says, I don’t plan on marrying any of you. 

Reiji: You are delusional to think you have a say in it, Sayori. You were brought to us in order to marry one of us. That is your place. It is ridiculous that you are trying to fight it like this. I’ve let this go on for far too long. Break off your relationship with Kou. I don’t want you seeing him again. I’ll tell Laito that I will be taking over as your guardian. When this school year ends, I will be graduating. I see no point wasting time in succeeding my father, so I shall make plans for our wedding. 

-Sayo slams her hands down on the table as she stands

Sayo: Reiji, I may like you and Subaru the best out of your brothers, but right now you are being ridiculous…!

-She turns, running off down the sidewalk

Monologue

As I ran through town, thoughts continued to swirl around in my head.  I had been fooling myself, thinking I could forget about what had happened between Reiji and I before the Mukami brothers showed up.  If Reiji spilled everything to Kou, I’m sure he would be pissed that I hadn’t told him before now… I just had to hope that wouldn’t happen.

the lao shu family is honestly my favourite because they are so disruptive to others and each other and with the exception of yuans nature and lees actions in yangs route i just love their dynamics. i love how yang truly loves the twins as it shows a lot of times (yang cooked for them in the past. yang saved them. yang trusting the twins. yang closing their eyes as salvation in the tragic end. yang teaching the twins how to fight). lee is actually a nagging housewife but hes loyal to yang and does care abt the twins in his own way. rui is so relaxed and hes like this chill big brother whos also loyal to yang in yangs route and a lil troublemaker to match the twins. yuan is a dick but hes the most loved villain in this sequel lmao

also adult fei 👁👄👁 piofiore 3rd game where its 10 years later and he falls for the next key maiden. he has tht siscon going on but thats surprisingly his sweet side to balance out his ruthless nature thanks to papa yang (aka 1st commander nw knowing him) lan and fei being the 6th comnanders and fei going thru the pain n struggle of what yang went thru to get lili

But like so do we even know what Yuri looks like? So far I have not really seen his face of much description of what he look like

yuri plays an EXTREMELY important role in lost eden; I would argue that it is AT LEAST EQUAL to the role that richter has played in other games, probably way more important! he appears and does plenty of important stuff in multiple routes, but in kino's route he is CRITICALLY important. and in addition, he has tons of speaking lines, during which there is just....nothing on the screen. in what world does he not deserve art? a sprite?? even a description? doesnt this seem wrong???

this is something that bugs me about these visual novel otome games (like yes it's a dialovers problem but also the whole genre tends to have this problem). theyre supposed to be VISUAL novels, but so many important things just arent represented visually, including entire characters like yuri (who I would absolutely consider a MAJOR character in some routes). characters will fight, die, whatever......and we just can't see it. I think it's silly!! is there really such a small budget for otome games? these games cost like $60 to buy, you know????? I can buy other $60 games with SO much art and animation. I bought fucking breath of the wild with $60. but u buy a $60 otome game like dialovers and theyre like "you get character sprites and like, idk, 10 pictures per route. go crazy." I don't like it; I wish I could have higher standards!

I JUST!!!! think it's pure nonsense. it's like my biggest otome game pet peeve when they dont give us art for things that certainly should have art. yuri included :(

#text #I was kinda bitterly laughing to myself at that part of shus LE route #where theres this whole thing about yuma being jailed by the vibora king then assassinating him with a specific knife made of lapis lazuli #then getting subdued and hung from the castle walls and stuff #and then shu finds the knife later and gets flashbacks. u know that whole huge segment of the story #not a SINGLE part of that had any sort of visual representation in the game other than yuma's sprites and like two backgrounds #I cant believe seiji doesnt have art either. hes like karl heinz final boss status #smh smh smh
