Year-End Poll #66: 2015
Tumblr media
[Image description: a collage of photos of the 10 musicians and musical groups featured in this poll. In order from left to right, top to bottom: Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran, Wiz Khalifa, Fetty Wap, Maroon 5, Walk the Moon, Taylor Swift, Silentó, The Weeknd. End description]
More information about this blog here
I thought I would be able to go two polls without a song being sued by Marvin Gaye's estate over plagiarism accusations. Anyway, the sound of the 2010's is splintering in an odd way. Like the previous poll, we're seeing more songs with retro influences such as Uptown Funk and Shut Up and Dance. But as for the sound of the 2010's itself, we're starting to see more trap in the mainstream, both in terms of artists and production styles. And with See You Again, the wordless chorus (millennial whoop) is cementing itself as a major staple of the decade. But just below the top ten, we're also seeing the rise of another genre in the mainstream: tropical house. But we won't cover that until later.
We are now deep into the streaming era by this point, but not without its controversies. While some artists like Taylor Swift were fighting against streaming services, others tried to take this direction into their own hands. But again, we'll cover that in a later poll.

Whip Fortress
Season 7 Featured on: .@GiIvaSunner Whips & Nae Naes on Ellen the Generous 2: another hit
Ripped by circunflexo
youtube
Early on into this blog's life, one of the events that I just KNEW that I wanted to talk about was Season 2's Whip and Nae Nae day. Like many of the events from Season 2 and 3, it's an event I have a lot of fond memories of, particularly in making me realize just how good the SiIva team are at taking just about any source and making amazing use out of it. And yeah, I finally did get around to talking about it last month with The Ultimate Whip and Nae Nae - yet in that time I spent idling, I was beaten to the punch by the SiIva team themselves - in August this year, the event got a full-on sequel literally just called Whip and Nae Nae day Part 2. The event was bigger, the album was bigger, and most of all - the rips, like Whip Fortress, were all top-classic naenae content.
Though I certainly liked a lot of the rips part of the original Season 2 event, it did also feel like its main goal was to just play into the joke as much as possible. That, in my eyes, led to a lot of rips on its album that felt a bit too simple in nature, mashups or melody swaps that didn't take enough advantage of the potential of its original audio source. In that sense, comparing that album to the one made for the Season 7 event shows the evolution of the SiIva team demonstrably well - every rip uses the song in immensely creative ways, to where no two tracks on the album really feel similar despite all sharing The Same Joke. Amidst all that quality, there are rips like Whip Fortress - rips that almost make me forget that the event is supposed to, at least on some level, be "ironic" or "bad on purpose". Because, full-stop, I LOVE the rip as a genuine arrangement of the original Wind Fortress.
Cave Story as a game already means a lot to me, and I've been meaning to cover more rips from the game here on the blog - it just so happened that the first one I landed on, is one that on the surface appears to be something so silly. Yet circunflexo doesn't try to override the original song's emotional highs with the absurd source used in remixing it - if anything, the unique tone and iconic-sounding beat of Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae) only help the track, despite the direction the lyrics attempt to point your focus in. Whip Fortress succeeded like all the best rips do, in making me love both the source used in remixing the original track AND the original track itself more through their combined powers. Because no joke, no meme and no shitpost, no matter how stupid it may seem, is too far gone to be turned into a banger. The rippers at SiIvaGunner make absolute sure of that.

coming so so close by the skin of my teeth to escaping the 4-5 year super paper mario obsession and finally perhaps being normal about it only to be dragged back in screaming clawing at the ground after listening to one dimentio siivagunner rip

The Ultimate Whip and Nae Nae
Season 2 Featured on: .@GiIvaSunner Whips & Nae Naes on Ellen the Generous
Ripped by Millennium Hero
youtube
I went digging through the blog recently to see if there were any big SiIvaGunner jokes I hadn't yet covered. I mean, I only got to covering Bob Dylan two weeks ago with Can't Say Goodbye to Yesterday, and there's plenty more recent jokes such as Raft Ride that I'm still avoiding to talk about too much. Yet what shocked me the most was the absence of one, lone king, the ruler of two whole albums in Season 2 and Season 7 respectively - Silento, and the hit pop song Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae).
And like, I've covered rips with sources from "bad" music before, several times in fact. Last time I was writing about a Super Paper Mario rip, it was for THE NEW TEAM 10 FORT!!! [Francis Flow: Original Mix], using everyone's favorite hit song It's Everyday Bro. Yet It's Everyday Bro was released in 2017, and honestly felt mostly contained to the YouTube sphere - at the end of the day, its a stupid song about a YouTube celebrity bragging about how much of a YouTube celebrity he is, which was part of the fun. With Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae) releasing in 2015, it felt as if it immediately mutated into a plague of a pop culture phenomenon, the revival of the Gangnam Style dance with so many more layers of blatant marketability attached to it - it was DESTINED to become uncool, yet inevitable that it would stick around. Even today, the iconic "whip" the song is named after keeps cropping around in Twitter shitposts and edited memes here and there, like the remnants of Silento's virus still hanging over us.
Given all of this, it's kind of funny to me that the song's use on SiIvaGunner has been almost exclusively contained to these two events and their respective albums - in other words, we've been getting nae nae'd in waves. So I had a good number of rips to pick from, yet at the same time I feel like it'd be wrong to pick anything BUT The Ultimate Whip and Nae Nae - it felt like the culmination of the entire first event, and is a damn fun listen either way.
It's on the surface a pretty simple rip, acting mostly as just a mashup between the two songs, yet Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae) has been carefully tweaked with and adjusted to ensure each one of the original song's segments matches the segments of the original song. The resulting mashup feels destined to happen due in part to their similar energies - The Ultimate Show is the theme of an evil, yet fun-loving and juvenile villain, a deranged magician putting on a performance. Though Silento himself wouldn't be arrested for any crimes until 2021, the way his anthem infected the world, its children and even its trying-to-be-cool adults has really given it an aura of evil to it, like a lighthearted cult wherin EVERYONE must commit to the act of whipping and nae-naeing...!
...alright, so I'm exaggerating, but you get what I mean, right? The Ultimate Whip and Nae Nae embodies equal parts whimsy and danger, and was easily the highlight of that original takeover.
