I liked your selections for blair and serena's met gala looks. What do you think they'd wear for part 2?
actually what's super fun about this is that we've already seen them both in modernized gilded age costumes before, in the school production of age of innocence! (in case anyone needs their memory refreshed: serena, blair). i also think that there's a number of gowns in the show that, with some adjustments and proper accessories, would already be pretty suitable for the gilded glamour theme because gossip girl overall was imo quite inspired by that time period in terms of subject matter (this is why i always kinda laughed when people were like "bridgerton is gossip girl in the regency era!" because... in so many ways gossip girl was very much the regency era and the gilded age mixed up and thrown into the 2000s hahaha). the main ones that are coming to mind here are blair's alexis mabille dress and serena's georges chakra wedding dress.
as for my own interpretations, click below! :)
i think blair, given her love of classic/traditional styles alone, would go for a literal interpretation of the theme and would like a more historical look. the final look of vivienne westwood's fall 1995 rtw collection has been highlighted as met gala inspo by a few fashion blogs and i definitely think she'd go for something like this. a more historically accurate source of inspiration would be dresses from charles frederick worth, an english designer who found success in paris and was very popular with wealthy americans. something inspired by this dress would be a great pick for blair, especially because it makes me think of audrey's iconic sabrina dress. i also think a parasol would be a very fun touch for her and i'll be so sad if nobody brings one on monday lol.
serena, on the other hand, might be more suited to a very modern interpretation. one thing that i think a lot of people get wrong about the met gala is that bigger must always be better. sometimes i see people ripping apart looks as out of theme or too basic, when i think they actually are in theme, just not in the very literal way that a lot of people are expecting. like if someone isn't strapped into a corset and looking like they just stepped out of 1890, it won't necessarily mean they're not in theme! so much of the challenge that the met gala gives designers is to take these themes into our modern times, to think of what this particular theme means in 2022. for this reason, the schiaparelli spring 2022 couture collection has also been popular among fashion outlets as a met gala possibility. with lots of gold, reinterpreted corsets, and unique headpieces, the collection has a lot of looks that are great examples of being in theme without being super literal or on-the-nose. my favourite by far is look 28. the thin strips of gold hanging over a simple black dress reflects "the grandeur––and perhaps the dichotomy––of gilded age new york" that the met gala is looking for. mark twain (and charles dudley warner) actually coined the term "gilded age", playing on the definition of "gilded" as "covered thinly with gold" as a way to criticize the way in which the pain and inequity of this era was ignored as the wealthy became more and more extravagant (i mean, the clothing of the era alone is so indicative of just how over-the-top the rich were). it makes total sense that this dichotomy would be embodied by the golden girl/sunshine barbie of the upper east side, someone whose experiences most clearly revealed how much the glamour could hide.
another fave suggestion is looks from simone rocha's 2022 collections. this one is a fun take on the gilded age, re: corsets, fabric, colour, silhouette, and texture.
