This is my first time drawing Dude from the Skyline Gang. I’m happy with most of the upper body, not so much with the legs. This is my first time drawing him so I’ll probably get better the more I practice. I have been meaning to draw the other members, but I’ve been too busy. Maybe once I’ve broken up for the Christmas holidays I’ll have more time.

Note
Based on my research, The Skyline Gang is a group of musical artists that perform live shows at Butlin’s holiday resorts in the UK! The characters Dude and Candi remind me of Sportacus and Stephanie from LazyTown.
That's amazing? Okay, gives the same vibes as folks who are into the specific lore characters at Disney attractions, I've got the general fandom category now.
Honestly I don't know what LazyTown is either, it's a kid's tv show? We didn't have cable when I was growing up, so I was strictly a VHS kid, I don't know a lot of cultural touchstone shows! My friends have always liked suggesting character names to me and being surprised when I didn't know them :P

Skegness Solid Live Music More Blues than Rock in 2017
January drawing to a close, Christmas lights a fading memory. Then your calendar clicks around to Butlins, Skegness for the Great British Rock & Blues Festival, the next year of musical journeys begins. This year the emphasis is on Blues, Rock has fallen if not silent but reduced to a whisper this year, upsetting some and definitely changing the balance and feel of the weekend.
The Introducing Stage got the show underway from 4pm Friday until the early hours of Monday morning. The gaps were minimal the music quality, meeting of friends chatting about what stood out and having fun was the order of the day.  The grumble about the lack of rock was justified. The title of the weekend is Rock & Blues so you would expect a balanced mixture. Everyone who knows me knows that I love my Blues of every hue, but I love the energy of Rock, the power of Rock and energy of the stage shows and this year this injection of power was missed. Without the balance of Rock and Blues, we didn’t have the contrast of razor-sharp, sparkling blues guitar and the full-on power chords and stinging licks of granite fueled rock.
Bluesdoodles, Liz Aiken enjoyed the weekend visiting the stages catching acts, missing others. With four stages this was a hectic few days.  Starting off with the highlights across the days on Introducing Stage, run by Steve Stanley, of Solid Entertainments with the help from Paul Stiles and the Blues In Britain Team to hand out the voting disks.  The Skeggie road takes us to Centre Stage – designated as ‘The Rock Stage’ by the Butlins programming team. The journey continues with a visit to Jaks with its late night sessions jams and a distinctive atmosphere, organised by Blues Matters. Finally, our travels and weary feet take us to Reds, 2017 the Blues stage.  The programming was without argument patchy by the Butlins team what was good was very good, interspersed by mediocre and poor. The Road was definitely a Blue cobbled street rather than a rocky trail throughout the 2017 weekend. Let’s hope this is a transition year and next year the balance between Rock and Blues is restored. There are so many young exciting bands on the circuit that would be delighted to entertain the Skeggie crowds.
Now, for the music. GT’s Boos Band got the show under way and they were one of the thirteen excellent bands who delighted the crowded area at the heart of the Skyline Pavilion.  The bands played for the chance of performing on a stage at Butlins 2018, decided by public vote.  The three successful bands this year were Friday Night – Tom Walker Trio, Saturday, Southbound and the final finalist on Sunday was Greg Coulson Band.  The competition was tough every band bought an interpretation of blues and rock that shows the depth of live music in the UK today. Tom Walker Trio, played a set that sparked including originals and an interesting, entertaining interpretation of Joe Bonamassa’s John Henry. Hitting the authentic blues spot Backwater Roll certainly pleased the audience in a packed area. Saturday night showed that this stage is getting more popular every year as the place to find new festival gems that you will want to see live again. Southbound were great on the night with a live performance showcasing the power of the rhythm section as they delivered their distinctive Blues Rock with a bucket of soul sound thrown in for good measure.  Matt Edwards Band with Stuart Dixon on bass impressed as did their 2015 album Four Berry Jam. Matt has a voice that makes you listen and his guitar playing has an infectious tone. Amy Eftekhari’s performance of Somewhere Over The Rainbow got the crowds purring with delight. Then it was Sunday two performances really stood out and on another day Elles Bailey would have won. Her vocals have power and the addition of Nick Garner on harp added another dimension to this class act; for me the winner of Sunday night. But the popular vote went to Greg Coulson, who delivered by surrounding himself with excellent musicians and a confident stage presence on the day. His experience as keyboardist with The Selectors shone through combined with strong numbers from his forthcoming debut album. This was party music that lit up the Introducing Stage.

Centre Stage is where queues form every night long before the doors open. At least now they are entertained by the adjacent Introducing Stage. This year designated The Rock Stage for the first time had one certainty rock would be hard to find. Friday night opened with one of last year’s winners Sugarman Sam & The Voodoo Men. Wow, the transition to main stage fitted the band perfectly with a strong set. The music was hefty blues-rock, punctuated with authentic blues licks that curled around the rhythm section. Sugarman Sam, is growing as the new number She’s A Woman demonstrated. The following act was Eric Sardinas & Big Motor highly anticipated and deeply disappointing in the delivery.  Yes, a string did break, but why the length of time off stage, as so many said surely someone of this calibre should have a spare guitar tuned for slide, do a different number or have a guitar tech. It was left to the bass player, Paul Loranger who held the fort not once but twice as Sardinas left the stage and flounced off again. What the band played was good but the flow of the set was disjointed and definitely an off night for this colourful performer of Rock-blues.
Saturday with two sessions the afternoon opened by Texas Flood another winner from 2016. What a winning Rock n’ Roll set. Texas Flood definitely washed away any cobwebs with a rip-roaring high octane set that rocked. This is the rock we want to hear at Skeggie, but why the early timing? It was not as if the evening bands were that exciting. The energy was high, the timing sharp they certainly did Wales proud! The interplay between guitar and bass was sharp and entertaining.  Closing the afternoon the Helen Hardy Band entertained. A good R n’ B band the covers we know and flowed through the auditorium as Saturday afternoon drew to a close.  Saturday night. Kenney Jones & The Jones Gang, may not be classic rock but this was a band that delighted the crowds with songs from his vast back catalogue. Kenney Jones, the drummer who was the heart of three of the great bands The Small Faces, Faces and The Who. The crowd sung along with delight to Itchycoo Park and more.  Leafhound, a rock band were well received with Luke Rayner’s guitar sounding superb, the most underrated of the weekend. (Bluesdoodles spent most of the time in Reds and Jaks this just didn’t rock our boots)
Last day of the festival with a feeling of the night after the day before.  The last of 2016 Introducing Stage winners the Rainbreakers started things off. This is a band that never rains on your parade but brings a ray of sunshine Once again proving what a great launch pad the introducing stage is as they also stepped into Centre stage limelight delivering a storming set. The testimony to this was the queue for the merch as people wanted to get their hands on the latest E.P.  Rise Up. This was R n’ B with attitude, full of tasty riffs and delicious licks in the eclectic selection of numbers. A class act with loads of potential to be a name on everyone’s lips. Popa Chubby Band closed out the afternoon with his own brand of Blues and R n’ B with his trademarked lead breaks, held together by a solid rhythm section. The crowd really warmed to him many hearing him for the first time. Definitely class blues BUT definitely not Rock as Poppa described his music as Working Class Blues.  The night was not about rock but there were three acts that delighted the audiences. Kicking off the double celebration of the Rocking Blues was Laurence Jones with his new line-up. He built the energy, excited the packed house, the guitar was sweet. Laurence full of confidence gained from years of touring and playing live across Europe and the UK. The set was one-hundred percent Laurence with ribbons and bells as he showcased his latest album Take Me High. That is definitely what he did he took us high in to a dazzling blue encrusted music with the edge of rock  With Joanne Shaw Taylor up next we were going to be in for a Wild ride. Reflecting her current album, the set was full of deep blues riffs and licks that curled around the audience with a sensuous and stylish flow.  The interaction between Joanne and her bassist Luigi Casanova adds energy a visual focal point. Then she breaks away and soars into her renowned guitar solos that hit the spot where musical memories are made. Tonight, was the best I had heard her vocals the balance was perfect so voice and guitar were in balanced harmony. Closing out the festival on Centre Stage was Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel where many re-lived memories and reminded many of the sound track of their youth.

The weekend selection at Jaks was vast, full of delights and festival gems plus the fun of Saturday afternoon Jam. Ranging from the gently harmonious blues from Fran McGillivray to the dynamic sounds of blues with a punk attitude and sassy energy from the Husky Tones as this duo caught your attention. With a new album out soon this is a band we will be hearing lots of as they ask  Who Will I Turn To Now? Closing the night as the other stages fell silent we danced into the early hours with The Revolutionaires led by the charismatic and energetic Ed Stephenson.  Saturday afternoon is all about the Jam which two young men, Mikey Maclennan and Steve Liddle ran with style as unfortunately Jam stalwart Gary Boner from Roadhouse was unwell following a recent operation. Everyone wishes Gary a speedy recovery and a hearty welcome back to Skegness 2018. Saturday evening was a night of magic live-music. With two of the acts for many the bands of the weekend. Firstly Catfish who played a blinding set. Deep emotional blues full of verve and style as Matthew Long with his voice and guitar dominated the stage capturing the audience so that no-one was tempted away. Catfish’s rendition of Make It Rain was stunning and the emotions were charged and there were tears of joy as the passions of the audience and the band connected. Their new album, out 28th January, Broken Man will be a hit of 2017 there is definitely nothing broken about this band.  How do you follow that with Dom Pipkin & The Ikos and some New Orleans infused music. Closing the night and welcoming in Sunday were LaVendore Rogue. A band that is like marmite with the supporters outweighing those who cannot connect to their interpretation of the blues. Mixing up the set with old Hokie Joint numbers and tracks from the debut album, Light Up With they definitely shone music into our soul tonight.  Sunday evening, without Roadhouse they pulled a blinder by filling the gap with Ash Wilson. The anticipation was high, many had seen him play dual guitar in the Sean Webster Band. On stage he was joined by Bob Fridzema and Roger Inniss who played on his debut album, Broken Machine. Joining him on drums tonight was Wayne Proctor sitting in for his brother Phil Wilson who was otherwise engaged playing drums with Laurence Jones on Centre Stage. The set was mature, accomplished a quality performance of R n’B from everyone on stage. We heard covers like My Babe done the Ash way.  Ash’s vocals are strong at times sounding like molasses with the bass drum the heartbeat like cotton popping in a sun-drenched field as he  Holding Hands was sung. The Revelator a Jesse Davey number picked up the tempo. There was a pure synergy between these top drawer blues musicians a delight to behold and listen to.   Be delighted to see him on the Blues main stage next year.  Following this Will Johns & Friends, with Mikey Maclennan once again coming to the rescue as stand-in drummer. He met Will and the band a few minutes before stepping on Jaks stage with them to play a festival set. What a brilliant job he did. Very entertaining with witty repartee, brilliant guitar with a fantastic tone. What a high quality set of blues. The festival had one more act as the clocked turned into Monday, Jaks was packed as everyone squeezed a few more musical memories out of The Great Rock & Blues Festival 2017. Kris Barras Band, who delivered blues rock with power and a force to be reckoned with. Another live act that delivers every time building on the studio sound heard in their current album Lucky 13.  Blues Matters once again delivered music that will hold many memories and hats off to the DJ Clive Rawlings who each year acts as the glue that held the sessions together.

Reds this year was coloured with Blues of every hue and shade.  With Friday and Saturday dedicated to firstly to the harmonica and then to Alligator Records. Opening the festival for Reds was A Harmonica Explosion, a night where this German folk instrument was re-shaped in tone and playing by Southern States Blues musicians to be forever connected. Blues and harmonica are a perfect pairing. Opening the night was Giles Robson Band, a very entertaining set engaging the audience who were delighted to participate when asked. The music was an explosion of blues harp as we stepped on board the steam train and followed Giles on a ride full of tonal twists and turns of the blues-harp. Later on in the evening he was joined by three more renowned harp-players Magic Dick, who for some reason was not on top form, James Harman beset with frustrating technical issues so his harp was silent for far too long and the cream of the night a musician on fire Billy Branch. When they all played together at the end of the evening we were treated to a harp firework display.  The acoustic set from Martin Harley opening on Saturday afternoon was a melodic delight as he explored the tonal ranges of his lap Weissenborn guitar. The covers took us deep into the Delta full of acoustic twists and turns gently kick-starting a harmonious Saturday in Reds turned Blue.  The tempo then changed and Reds was packed as loyal fans of Nine Below Zero were once again caressed by the band that knows how to deliver. The only disappointment was this set was on in the afternoon many felt it suited an evening slot. The music drew you in the blues was delivered and everyone left with a deep sigh of contentment. The evening was a celebration of all things Alligator. With a first for Skeggie a Q&A session with Bruce Iglauer President and founder of Alligator records. Lots of interesting questions and we all gained an insight into how a blues label works. Three blinding sets unfurled showing the diversity of electric blues. Marcia Ball got the Alligator Party rocking turning Reds into a Roadhouse for this Blues Spectacular.  Proper Chicago blues played by a wonderful group of musicians who with a smile opened up the joy of the blues and entertained. Marcia Ball sung like an angel accompanying herself on the piano with the musicians that pulled together to showcase the sound they just love to share with everyone who listens. Blues is heavenly when played this well. The harmonious and interesting combination of drum shuffles, sax, keys and the power of vocal lyrics was infectious with the guitar pulling the show together. Wow! How do you follow that? Easy when you have the depth of Alligator artists to choose from. Next up blues with a difference a trio, Moreland and Arbuckle. All eyes are focused on Moreland with his cigar box guitar and Arbuckle’s, harp and vocals. A  high octane band playing Roots music that rocks you  to your core. Electrifying raw delta infused music that gets the adrenalin pumping feet tapping and you get a warm feel good glow as the music surges through your veins.  Closing tonight we headed deep into Southside Chicago for authentic urban blues with Toronzo Cannon. Having learnt his craft in the competitive and demanding Windy city club scene it takes a special blues magic to rise above the crowd. Toronzo has that with style and a flourish as he melds smooth vocals and stinging guitar chords. With a mix of his own numbers with strong lyrics and a couple of covers; what a dynamic end to an evening that enveloped you in Chicago Blues and so much more.
Sunday at Reds was a mixed package for me opening with Lil Jimmy Reed featuring Bob Hall on Keys this was the perfect blues smoothie for early Sunday afternoon. Followed by Paul Jones and Dave Kelly as a duet Sunday was a smooth affair. The evening was a mix David Knopfler on acoustic guitar, disappointed, The Blues Band as ever delivers British blues with style and aplomb. Closing the night is Jamie Williams and The Roots Collective; this is blues infused with English Folk and roots music. Closing the festival on Reds they delivered a stylish set that didn’t for me shout out the blues. Not a celebration but a party we all enjoyed.

There were many highlights of every Blue hue the strongest stages over the whole festival weekend were Jaks and the Introducing Stage. The night celebrating Alligator Records was a combination of brilliant blues drenched music. The three young bands who won The Introducing Stage Sugarman Sam & The Voodoo Men, Texas Flood and The Rainbreakers, all added a shine to the festival.  Memories of 2017 will be many and all tinged in blue rather than rock. The acts that you should run to see again are Catfish, LaVendore Rogue, Ash Wilson, the winners of the Intro Stage and Elles Bailey. Joanne Shaw Taylor in this form is a force to be reckoned with, Marcia Ball , Moreland & Arbuckle, Toronzo Cannon and the harp supremacy that is Giles Robson.

Skyline Gang: Fears (Bud)
1shot stories list: click HERE
Fears Summary: click HERE
Bud’s emotions always became complicated to him everyday. He doesn’t display them outwardly that often. Usually when he does it’s for a show or when he’s expressing himself in front of his friends. Social interactions can confuse him too. He’d often said the wrong thing or get the topic wrong if he happened to join in a conversation halfway through. Back home, people always had a problem with it. That’s why he usually wrapped himself up in a book and studying, so he can forget about what people said about him. But even that wasn’t much of an escape. Kids at school always took a jab at him. From taunting him with words to physically tormenting him. He recalled one bully snatching his glasses off his face and breaking them. Whenever he tried to offer any help with studies, they’d turn him away in the harshest ways. Sometimes even bringing his autism into the topic and that he should be stupid. He had tried telling adults, all his life, but it fell on deaf ears. No one would listen to him.
Those memories hurt, but he didn’t have to think about them. Not when he was surrounded by his friends. They never taunted him (apart from Misty, but he’s used to her behaviour by now and he ignored it most of the time). Whenever he said something super smart, they would listen and if they needed further explaining, they’d politely ask him to clarify. Every new gadget or app he’d create, they’d jump on board to help test them out with him. They treated him as an equal despite his flaws. He had his home and safe place here. No one scorned him for who he is. He even connected with kids on the spectrum and consulted with parents that had concerns about the possibility of their child being on the spectrum and what they should do going forward. It felt nice, being on equal ground to everyone else.
“You’re a freak, you know that right?”
“I beg your pardon?” Bud responded, turning around to where the voice came from. Behind him was someone a little older than him. He seemed to be on his own, which isn’t that unusual especially on a quiet day. However, since Bud was cut off from his friends, it honestly felt suspicious to him. There was also an odd tone in this guy’s voice as well. Something that reminded him of when he was back at school. No! He’s not there! He’s in the Skyline, his safe space. He’s happy here. People liked him here. So why was he receiving some kind of dread here?
“I’m saying that you’re a freak.” The teen repeated, brow furrowing a little. Irritation. “You’re just pretending to be smart so that you can feel better about yourself.”
“That’s very controversial.” Bud observed. This guy was an idiot. Sure some of the acting that he and the others do on stage are just that, an act. But his smarts are far from that. He worked hard to be who he is right now. Why should he fake that for nothing? He’d be lying to himself. “I don’t need to pretend to be anything.”
“Then tell me if you’re so smart, then why are you autistic?” The teen responded back. His lips curled upwards slightly. Smug, and believing that he has a leg to stand on. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Did this guy even have an education? He didn’t seem like he did. Autism is unpredictable. It can manifest for anyone at any stage in life. It affects everyone differently. ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, OCD, and even insomnia. It’s a spectrum. No one knows the cause of it (maybe Bud should help with finding the answer when he gets older). So what this moron was saying made no sense. He clearly didn’t think about his argument. He just thought of a way to target Bud without a stable plan.
“What you’re saying is ridiculous.” Bud sighed hopelessly. He didn’t want to but he might as well try to educate the idiot before something took a bad turn. “Just because I’m different from you, doesn’t mean that I can’t be intelligent.”
“Don’t you get it? I’m just stating facts here. Or are you too dumb to realise that?” The teen spat, getting right into Bud’s face. Bud grimaced as he could smell the idiot’s foul breath. Has this guy ever heard of oral hygiene? Or used a toothbrush? It doesn’t matter. Bud decided that there was no point in believing that he can change the situation. The teen had made up his mind and refused to listen. Bud turned on his heels and began walking away. He had something to work on anyway and he’s wasted enough time. “You act as if you don’t care! I bet you’ve never noticed that you have been bullied or something like that?”
It was like hearing glass break. That statement was so shocking that it caused Bud to stop moving. Bullied? Of course he was bullied. Kids can be cruel, he learned that a long time ago. Grown ups that refuse to help are worse. Idk right now. Some adults were watching this, but refused to help. Some are parents leading their children away from the scene. It’s understandable, the last thing a child should see is something like this. But other grown ups were no help at all by ignoring it. One even took out their phone or record this for some clout. It’s nothing new to Bud. So why does this hurt so much? Why was he trembling? Stay calm, block out the confusing emotions.
“I’m not denying that I was a victim of bullying.” Bud said, turning around to face the enemy. “And right now, you’re being a bully. I must ask that you leave me alone.” That’s enough. More than enough for him. He turned around again to walk away. Just go back to his room, calm down and focus on his personal project. A grimy hand suddenly clamped on his shoulder. He hated surprises like that, it almost caused him to freak out. Stay calm. Don’t do something stupid.
“Are they even your friends?” The enemy taunted. Another glass shattered in Bud’s mind. He visibly flinched from the most outrageous accusation. Calm down. Try not to react too much. Don’t get physical.
“I beg your pardon! Of course they are!” Bud found himself shouting, pulling away and stepping backwards from this idiot. Get some personal space back.
“They only keep you around because you’re claiming to be smart!” The teen smirked, circling around Bud like a shark. “That’s all you are to them. A useless brain. Secretly, they’re laughing at you. I imagine that they see you as nothing but an embarrassment. I mean who’d want to be friends with a freak like you?”
“That’s a baseless accusation and you know it!” Bud fought back, still shaking. Stay calm! Don’t have a meltdown now! Run! Get away! Why can’t he move?!
“As soon as your job here as the “smart guy” is done, they’ll kick you to the curb.” The bully continued. He knows the weak points now. Bus had accidentally exposed those to him. That was all the ammunition that he needed. “You’re just a waste of space to them.”
“You don’t know them like I do!” Bud continued to argue. That’s right. Behind closed doors, his friends were amazing to him. They fit him in among them like a puzzle piece. He knows them better than anyone. In a way, they saved him from being lonely forever. They were heroes to him. “They’re all my friends. I trust them.”
“Well don’t come crying to me when you’re some homeless bum on the streets.” The enemy smirked, standing in front of Bud once again. He could see how much Bud was trembling, and that was a win for him. “Like I said, you’re a freak of nature. You shouldn’t have been born to begin with.”
“Out!” Bud suddenly yelled. That was the final straw. He can’t take this anymore. Remove the problem! Now! Hurry! “Leave now! Or I’ll have security escort you off the premises.”
“Weak! I’m leaving.” The bully shrugged. He had done a good job here. No need to stay in this dump. “Who’d want to be around a freak like you anyway?”
As he walked past, the bully harshly bashed his shoulder against Bud’s. A high pitched ring resonated in Bud’s ears. He tried to breathe calmly but it was like his lungs had shut down. The ringing got louder, prompting him to cover his ears. His body was shaking, threatening him to collapse to the ground. People were still staring? Was he still being recorded? Why didn’t people help him? Why can’t this meltdown happen at the house where he’d be safer?
Stop! Don’t think! Just calm down! Shut out what that bully said! He was an uneducated, foul breath smelling ingrate that should go back to school! So why did a part of him believe what was said?
Before Bud could answer or argue in his head, someone stood in front of him. Not too close, but close enough to feel their presence. He shakily peeled his hands away from his ears. He hesitantly looked up. Standing in front of him was Pip. What was she doing here? Wasn’t she looking into something for one of the shops? Or was she done with the task and just happened to find Bud like this? Did she see what had happened?
“Hey, Bud. Is everything okay?” She asked, looking concerned. Bud almost said no. He wanted to tell her to get him home where he can be safe. He wanted to tell her what happened. He opened his mouth-
No! She’ll laugh at you! They’ll all laugh at you! Freaks are born to be laughed at!
“Just fine, Pip. Thank you for asking.” Bud automatically said, standing up straight. Ignore those feelings. Ignore what had happened. Just lock it in a box and throw it in the deepest trench in the ocean. Pip looked like she wanted to ask him another question, but Bud had turned away before she could get a word out. He can’t remember what happened after that. He blacked out. He didn’t know how long he was catatonic. He doesn’t remember where he was. He doesn’t remember how he got to his room. He doesn’t remember sitting on his bed, rocking back and forth. The only thing that he remembers was hearing a knock on his door. He snapped out of it, dazed. He looked around his room. It felt alien to him. It shouldn’t be.
How long had he been here for again?
Another knock. It caused Bud to stand up. Today was a bad day. Maybe whoever was knocking would give him something good. Just anything to forget what happened today.
“Hey, mate! You wanted to see me?” Dude smiled as the door opened. That’s right! Bud had asked Dude to oversee what he had done for his project. It was something that can benefit the Skyline and maybe revolutionise it entirely.
“Yes! Perfect timing!” Bud exclaimed excitedly, pulling Dude into his room. Dude couldn’t help but keep smiling at the enthusiasm. He didn’t need to ask anymore as Bud started explaining his idea. He thoughts of a way to design some drones to help out the staff in the Skyline. Security, collecting litter and even have some features to entertain kids while they were waiting for a show to start. It was just an idea that he got when doing some maintenance on one of his robotic helpers. They help to keep his room clean and in order, so why can’t some help out a little in the Skyline? Just as Bud was showing off a small prototype, he started to ramble about the mechanics and how the systems would run, he was going a little too fast right now. Not a problem. Dude will just ask him to slow down.
“Um…Bud?” Dude carefully interrupted. Bud paused mid word in his rambling. His face became unreadable. “You’re speaking too fast again. I get that you’re excited but I’m struggling to keep up a bit. Could you start again from-”
Dude stopped his request as Bud’s grip loosened on his prototype. It fell to the ground, breaking a little from the impact. It caused Dude to flinch a little from the sudden action. It wasn’t like Bud to be this careless with his machines, usually he handles them as if they’re made of glass. With extreme care. Losing his grip like that is abnormal. Bud looked down at the prototype, his face still unreadable. He just got down on his knees, reaching out for his machine.
He doesn’t understand! He’s calling you a freak! He’s not your friend! He’s a bully!
“Bud? Are you okay?” Dude asked, kneeling down to Bud’s current eye level.
“You too then…” Bud suddenly muttered, carefully picking up his machine.
“I’m sorry?” Dude said, not understanding what was going on.
“You’re just like them…” Bud muttered again, looking down at the broken machine in his hands. His project, his hard work, down the drain. He’s a failure. When the others hear about it, they’ll laugh at him. Maybe even kick him out.
“Like who?” Dude asked. Bud started to rock back and forth a little. Something’s wrong. Just ask about. Try to calm Bud down before it gets worse. “Bud? What’s gotten into you?” Dude started reaching out, intending to stop the rocking before his friend hurts himself.
“Don’t!” Bud suddenly shouted. His hand flew out, smacking Dude’s hand away so hard that it left a mark. Dude fell back in surprise, nearly crushing a drone by accident as it scuttled past him. Bud stood up, holding his machine as if it were a child to him. “You just came here to mock me!”
“What?! No!” Dude exclaimed, carefully climbing to his feet. He doesn’t recall any point where he was making fun of his friend. If he said something by accident then he’ll apologise. But he needs to find out what’s going on here. And calm Bud down. “Bud, I would never do that. What’s going on?”
“Get out!” Bud demanded, a deadly fire lighting in his eyes. His voice was so sharp and loud that it caused Dude to flinch. Bud has never gotten this angry before. This might just be one of his bad days, but he’s never physically lashed out before. What’s happening?
“Just calm down.” Dude calmly said, gesturing a little with his hands.
“Out!” Bud yelled again. Dude opened his mouth, but words won’t do right now. Bud was upset. He won’t calm down right now. Get out of his safe space, let him calm down on his own. Maybe get Rainbow to try to help. Whatever is going on, Bud will say eventually. He just needs time to calm down.
“Okay, okay…” Dude relented, backing away as calmly as he could. He kept his eyes on Bud until he closed the door behind him. The entire time, Bid had been glaring right back at him. Once Dude was in the clear, he leaned back on the wall, heaving a heavy sigh. What just happened? It’s not the first time that Bud had been asked to explain something more clearly. He’d normally apologise and happily oblige with the request. But snapping like that? It was like a switch had been flipped. This can’t just be a bad day. Something must have happened. Why won’t he say anything? No, don’t force it out. Give Bud some space.
“Dude? What just happened?” Mimi suddenly asked as she came out of her room. She must have been touching up on her looks and heard the shouting.
“I…I don’t know…” Dude muttered, looking down at his hand. Right where Bud had struck it still stung. All the bitterness from that last minute with Bud was still lingering.
“Bud might be having one of his bad days.” Mimi offered as she got a little closer. “You know that they happen at random.”
“I know. But this felt different…” Dude muttered, looking back at Bud’s door. His concern continued to grow, making his stomach churn a little. “Something has upset him, but I don’t think it relates to his autism. At least, not completely.”
“Let’s give him a chance to calm down.” Mimi said, gently leading Dude downstairs. It was the best idea for now. If Bud finds them both outside and realise that they were talking about him, it’ll make his mood worse. Or worse yet, cause him to physically lash out again. Just leave him alone, let him calm down. Dude needed to gather his thoughts on the matter too. As Mimi served him some tea, he racked his brain. He still wanted to know if he had accidentally said anything that caused this whole debacle. Nothing came to mind. As he continued to mull over everything, Pip came into the den. She took in the bleak atmosphere, and immediately had a bad feeling.
“What’s happened?” She asked.
“Bud shouted at Dude a minute ago.” Mimi explained, cupping her hands around her yellow mug. “We’re just letting him calm down.”
“What did he say exactly?” Pip slowly asked. Now that bad feeling intensified. Bud was on the cusp of a meltdown the last time she saw him. When she asked what was wrong, he brushed her off as if nothing had happened.
“That I’m “just like them” and that I was making fun of him.” Dude explained, still trying to think of a way to resolve this matter. “The thing is, I don’t know what brought this on all of a sudden. It’s not like him.”
“No, I think I know what’s wrong.” Pip sighed, scratching the back of her neck.
“You do?” Dude and Mimi exclaimed.
“Just let me handle it.” Pip said and took off before she was asked any more. Thankfully, Dude and Mimi didn’t ask more or go after her. They left this in her hands. Before she headed to Bud’s room, she went straight into her own. Reaching under her bed, she grasped at something red and wrapped up in plastic. It was somethin that the rest of the Gang had ordered especially for Bud. She was going to wait until it was Bud’s birthday like she and the others agreed, but now is the best time to bring this to him. After stripping off the plastic and waiting for another minute, she journeyed over to Bud’s room. One deep breath later, she gently knocked on the door.
No response.
“Bud? It’s me.” Pip spoke quietly as she slowly opened the door ajar.
“Go away, Pip.” Bud’s torn up voice responded back.
“No way, mate.” PiP stood firm, pushing the door further open. Bud was sitting on the floor by his bed. None of his robots were moving around. They were all in their docking stations for charging. It left Bud in silence, but he had his over his ears as if he could still hear something that was irritating him. His knees were close to his chest, his eyes looking down on them. He was also rocking back and forth, making some kind of strange noise. Pip’s heart broke for him. He just looked…broken…
Being as slow and gentle as she could, Pip got a little closer to him. She unfolded the heavy, soft material in her hands, and draped it around his shoulders. Bud sharply looked up in surprise. His eyes darted up to her in a blind panic. Pip stepped back, allowing him to process what was on him. He looked around his shoulders, catching sight of the weighted blanket he now suddenly had. It was soft, warm, heavy but just the right weight for him. Automatically, his hands flew up to grasp the blanket. He pulled it further around him, almost smothering himself in it. He closed his eyes, taking slow, deep breaths. All the tension he had was suddenly gone, causing him to slump more than he already was. Pip carefully sat down beside him, trying to maintain a good distance. After a few minutes of this, she felt like it was a good time to confess something.
“Look, I’m not going to hide it anymore.” She sighed, feeling a little better herself for saying this next. If she kept it in any longer, she’ll blow up. “I know what that jerk said to you, about us laughing behind your back.” Bud rapidly looked up at her. His movement was so abrupt that his glasses nearly flew off his face. How could she know about that? The only way that she could was if she watched the whole thing. If she did then…
“Then why didn’t you help?” Bud stuttered, not sure if he should be shocked or angry or both. He thought that he could rely on his friends to back him up. So why?! Why did Pip betray him like that?!
You’re a freak! That’s why she didn’t help you!
“Because you stood up to him!” Pip declared, cursing off that thought in Bud’s head. All the voices of doubt stopped, allowing only Pip’s voice to be heard. “You did that on your own. That’s something to be proud of, Bud.”
Bud opened his mouth to say otherwise, but then he stopped. He thought back to that moment with the bully, the bully had said something mean and awful, but Bud didn’t back down from his statements. He warned the bully to go away, and he only left when the threat of security came up. Bud would never get physical. Violence never solves anything. If he swung a punch, he’d be no better than the bully. Despite him being the scared, he still stood by what he meant.
“I suppose I did…” Bud confessed, pulling the blanket tighter around himself.
“You did! Honestly, you handled it better than I would’ve. I probably might have decked him.” Pip smiled proudly. Bud wanted to remark that violence is never a good solution, but he had a feeling that Pip was just saying that for show. Still he smiled a little too. He should be proud of himself. “Bud, you know that what the guy said was nothing, right?”
“Of course I do.” Bud said before he gave himself a chance to think. An automatic reflex.
“Then why did you shout at Dude?” Pip asked gently. Concern and understanding. No negative feelings at all.
“He’s not mad is he?” Bud asked, tensing up at that awful prospect.
“Mad? At you? No way.” Pip smiled reassuringly. “If anything he’s just confused.”
“I…I don’t know what happened.” Bud said hesitantly. He remembered the look on Dude’s face. Hurt and confusion. He wasn’t mad at all. Bud mulled over something before reaching next to him. “But…I think that I might have found a possible conclusion.”
Pip didn’t even realise that Bud had his tablet next to him until he pulled it out. He rapidly tapped at it to unlock it. The screen flashed up, reflecting off of his glasses. He read over something before passing it to the rock chick. Pip didn’t know what to expect. She just looked at the screen. A journal article on phobias? What would Bud want to look for? Then she read the topic that he was reading about.
“Gelotophobia, the fear of being bullied?” Pip read out loud.
“Bullying has been happening to me for so long that…I think today was quite triggering…” Bud explained, curling up further in on himself. Pip suddenly felt a little guilty. Maybe she should have helped Bud earlier after all. This might not have happened. In her mind at the time, she thought that if she intervened, Bud wouldn’t be able to stand up for himself. The thing that made it worse was how many people just stood there and watched. She even caught the person that was recording the whole thing to delete the video. Maybe she should have stepped in. Nothing she can do about it now, she’s not a time traveler.
“I’m sorry that happened.” Was all that she could say. What else could she say?
“Thank you.” Bud forced out. “But it is I that should be doing the apologising. I said something awful to Dude.”
“Give him some time.” Pip smiled kindly, rubbing Bud’s shoulder again as she passed him back his tablet. Speaking of time, Bud might want some to himself right now. “Do you want me to get you anything?”
“No thank you. I’ll go find Dude a little later.” Bud sighed feeling a little tired all of a sudden. “Could you not tell him about this? I want to explain it properly myself.”
“Request granted! Take your time, man.” Pip grinned, jumping to her feet. Mission accomplished! She got Bud to calm down, praise him for standing up for himself and learned something new. Best accomplishments of the day in her book. Maybe she should write a song about anti bullying. She herself had been a victim of bullying and no doubt that the others have been too.
“Pip? Thank you.” Bud smiled tearfully. Pip’s grin went wider as she gave Bud a thumbs up. She then left him alone to let him calm down a bit more. And enjoy his new blanket in private. Best idea for a present, even if gifting it was a little premature.
An hour went by and Bud finally left his room. The Skyline had gotten much quieter now, not that many guests. It allowed the Skyline Gang to relax a little bit. Bud couldn’t relax. At least not yet. Just one thing left to do. He’s noticed that when Dude’s upset, he’d go to the beach or shoot some hoops. Since it was closer, his first stop was the basketball court. His first guess was right. Dude’s dribbling was heard before the genius  spotted his friend. Dude didn’t seem to notice, being more focused on his aiming and shooting at the basket instead. When Bud was about to step onto the course, Dude must have gotten the angle wrong. When he fired his last shot, the ball bounced off the backboard. It bounced along the ground, only coming to a stop at Bud’s feet. He carefully picked it up, his palms sweating. He looked up at Dude, starting to shake a little. A part of him was expecting his friend to shout and be angry at him. He was bracing himself for that. The irrational part of him was wrong when he saw his friend smiling a little at him.
“Hey, Bud. You alright?” Dude asked. Concern and warmth. No anger or grudge toward Bud. He felt a little better seeing this.
“I was just looking for you.” Bud responded, holding the basketball tightly. He took in each bumpy texture under his skin. It helped even further to settle his nerves.
“What’s up?” Dude asked. Patience.
“I apologise for my behaviour earlier today.” Bud sighed, still feeling the guilt eat away from him.
“Bud, don’t be silly.” Dude spoke a little sternly. Bud almost expected him to do a 180, but reminded himself of his talk with Pip. Dude’s not mad. Keep repeating that in his head. “I know how you get on most days.”
“No, this isn’t one of my bad days.” Bid interrupted, his hands clenching around the ball tighter. Pip didn’t tell, did she? She said “request granted” so she pretty much promised. She wouldn’t betray a promise, right? No, calm down. Don’t overthink it. “Did Pip tell you anything?” Just a confirmation. That’s all he needs.
“I know that she spoke to you and everything but she didn’t tell me what it was about.” Dude explained, brow furrowing. More concern. Especially after Bud let out a relieved sigh. Pip really did keep her promise after all. “Are you okay?”
Three small words, but they leave a huge impact. It was like a signal to go for a race, and Bud was in first place.
“I would like to explain myself.” He let out before he could start overthinking everything. Dude carefully placed a hand on his shoulder. He was still smiling, he was patient and reassuring.
“Sure thing. Why don’t we go sit down?” He offered as he gestured to the picnic benches. None of them were occupied, which allowed some privacy for Bud to talk. He couldn’t have been more grateful as he felt his legs feeling wobbly. Once he and Dude sat down, without needing to be asked, the words spilled out of his mouth. He let out everything. He confessed about the bullying he experienced in school and today. He told Dude why he accused him of bullying and explained his discovery of this phobia he believed to have. Dude didn’t interrupt to comment or ask a question. He remained silent, consoling and understanding. Once it was all over, Bud finally broke down crying. Everything that he had bottled up just flooded right out. It was a mixture of guilt, pain and relief. Why were emotions so complicated? Dude rubbed his back, comforting him while he broke down.
“Thank you for telling me. It was very brave of you, mate.” He smiled, making sure that his friend could hear him. “If you have any other concerns like this, or if it happens again, don’t hesitate to tell me.”
Bud couldn’t have been happier to hear that. His bad day started to get better already. Sooner or later, he’ll feel better about himself.
It’s all just one step at a time.

The skyline gang & Butlins is my favorite thing ever, it is so comforting and nostalgic to me. It’s one of the only places I feel safe and confident, I can be myself when I’m in the skyline, spending all my coins on the claw machines despite knowing how big of a scam they are. Hanging out with my redcoat friends waiting for Jingle’s Puppet Castle show to begin, dancing in the magic circle, getting giddy at mega treats, going crazy at the skypark and queuing for my photo with Billy & Bonnie.
The skyline gang are some of my only friends too, it’s so nice seeing them after such a long difficult time at school. Discussing bud’s latest invention, causing mischief with Misty, pranking sprout, chatting with Candi & Mimi, getting photos with dude & the gang and hugging pip. I love all of those moments.

Skyline Gang: Trial of Darkness. Chapter 19
Chapter 1: click HERE
Chapter 18: click HERE
Chapter 20:
“Grab my legs!” Pip ordered, having already stripped off her rucksack and sat on the edge of the gorge.
“What?! Pip?!” Bud exclaimed as Pip started leaning back.
“Grab her!” Mimi shouted, jumping into action. She and the others pinned down Pip’s legs as she hung upside down like a bat. Rainbow laid out flat over her ankles like an anchor. Even Misty suddenly found herself helping. Why did she care? No, she doesn’t care! So why was she helping?! What is wrong with her right now?! It was like some kind of instinct that she had to help.
“Dude! Swing her over!” Pip called out, ignoring the blood rushing to her head.
“What?!” Candi shrieked. Dude looked at the rock chick himself in shock. Then he started to think about it as quick as he could. They were so close to getting off the bridge. Just a few more steps and they would’ve made it. They were close enough for Candi to be thrown to Pip. The question if Dude had enough strength to pull it off. Right now he didn’t know if this gamble was going to pay off. But something needed to be done.
“Candi, listen to me carefully.” Dude grunted, looking down at Candi. Despite her vision being compromised, Candi looked right up at him. She was going to hate this plan. “I’m going to start swinging you. Pip is going to grab hold of you.”
“You promised not to let go!” Candi wailed, kicking her legs automatically. Dude fought hard to keep himself still, straining to keep a firm grip on the girl.
“I know! And I’m sorry!” He shouted, wishing that he could offer something better. He had nothing. He just needed to trust his strength and Pip’s ability to catch when she’s upside down like this. “But if I don’t swing you to her, we’ll both fall! You trust me? Right?”
“Yes!” Candi shrieked, tightening even more on Dude’s arm. Wake up! Wake up right now! Just start the day over again!
“Then don’t let go of me until I say so!” Dude ordered, squeezing Candi’s hand as reassuringly as he could. “And keep your hands outstretched for Pip!” Candi shakily nodded. She didn’t want to do this, but Dude was right. Just get this over with already. Mustering up all the strength that he has left, Dude started to swing the girl. He started off small and gentle, but gradually got stronger with his swing. Just a little more. Pip’s face started to turn a little red from being upside down that long. Please catch her! Don’t get too disoriented from this! Dude kept swinging Candi a little more, the rope threatening to break from the motions. Just one more! Now!
“Now, Candi!” Dude heaved as his grip on Candi lessened. Candi let go of him at the same time. She let out a glass shattering scream as she felt weightless. She kept her hands as far stretched out as she could. She thought she was going to die of a heart attack at that split second. She’ll fall! She’s going to fall! Suddenly, something wrapped around her wrists. Fingers? Candi didn’t have much time to think as she hit the cliff face, causing her feet to scrape on it in fright.
“I’ve got you!” Pip grunted, grabbing hold of Candi tighter than a vice. “Pull us up!” Bud and Sprout grabbed Pip’s legs as Rainbow got off of them himself. They started pulling back as gently and quickly as they could. Mimi reached down, also grabbing at Candi was she was brought up high enough. Rainbow also helped by biting down on the scruff of Candi’s shirt, just like how he did for Misty. They pulled her up just as Pip was brought to safety herself. Once Candi was safely on solid ground, she was a weeping mess, shaking so much that she may as well crumble to dust right then and there. That was so terrifying. She’s going to have nightmares for days, maybe even weeks.
“Candi!” Sprout cried out, pulling Candi into a tight hug.
“I’m okay! Where’s Dude?!” Candi sobbed, yanking the bandages off of her face. She looked around widely, unaware of everything else around her.
“Give me your hand!” Mimi suddenly shouted, lying on her front with her hand held out. Candi’s head whipped around. Dude had a hand free now. He was able to shuffle along the rope that still managed to hold on for him. He bit back the pain of rope burn on his hands. He didn’t have a fear of heights, but he definitely won’t be forgetting this experience for a very long time. He also might not want to cross any old and knackered looking bridge again any time soon. Once Dude spotted Mimi’s hand, he was quick to grab onto it. She pulled him up, Bud being quick to assist her. Dude was pulled to safety. His arms shook after all the strain that happened in them. He took deep breaths as his heart went to a steady rhythm.
“Thanks…” he panted, wiping sweat from his brow.
“Are you okay?” Bud asked, shaking a little himself.
“I’m fine. Where’s Candi?” Dude asked. Almost right away, Candi twisted around and jumped right at Dude. He barely had enough time to register as her arms wrapped around him tightly. She let out an endless series of sobs. Dude responded by holding her just as tightly. He was relieved when he saw Pip catch Candi as planned, but holding her like this just brought the relief home.
“It’s okay. Listen to me.” He whispered, gently pulling back. Candi looked back up at him, eyes red and puffy from her weeping. “You were very brave. Alright? You did amazing.”
“No! I wasn’t!” Candi wailed, shaking her head furiously. “It’s because of me we almost-”
“Candi, stop.” Dude gently spoke up. Candi stopped in her panicked rambling. She just looked up at him, still terrified from everything that had happened. Dude responded by rubbing her arms encouragingly as he smiled. “You did it, alright? You’ve got across and we’re both okay. That’s the main thing.”
Those words weren’t fully processed by Candi. She was too rattled. She leaped at Dude again, pulling him into a furiously tight hug. Dude might be feeling like he was in a hydraulic press right now, but he didn’t care. He just held onto Candi, rubbing her back as soothingly as he could. He’d be lying if he said that he wasn’t scared by the whole experience too. He might be comforting Candi, but in a way, she was comforting him too. So what if his shirt was getting wet by her tears? It’ll dry out. Taking care of Candi was the main priority right now. It was better than forcing her to walk when she’s this upset. Sprout tried to join in a little, awkwardly patting Candi’s head as Rainbow nuzzled into her. Mimi was likewise, rubbing Dude’s back which helped him suppress his own shaking. Meanwhile, Misty was just watching the whole thing. She was so confused.
“How are we going to get back over there?” Pip muttered bitterly at the remains of the bridge.
“We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.” Bud concluded. He then let out a wince at his words. Bad phrase to say right now. The smack that Mimi landed on his leg was more than enough proof of that. Bud looked down at Dude and Candi, also receiving an unamused look from Dude. “S-sorry, you two.”
“It’s fine. Let’s just get out of here.” Dude sighed, just wanting to leave before they lose daylight. He helped get Candi back onto her feet, keeping hold of her as she stumbled to walk. Rainbow stayed glued to her side, allowing her to pet his head to help further calm herself. Pip and Sprout closely followed them, ready to offer any support when needed. Bud and Mimi were about to follow, but they then stopped. Misty was staring off into space, her general direction was the last of the bridge. She didn’t seem to have noticed that the Gang had started moving on. It was like she was in a trance.
“Misty? Are you okay?” Mimi asked. Misty flinched a little, as if Mimi’s voice had startled her harshly.
“Yeah…” Misty responded, but there was something…off with her tone. She didn’t seem her usual self right now.
“Is the Sceptre starting to affect you?” Bud asked, glancing worryingly at the case strapped to Misty’s rucksack. “You have been holding onto it for a long time.”
“A little bit…” Misty muttered. Bud became a bit more suspicious. She didn’t seem affected by it. Her colour was normal for her and she didn’t look sick or anything like that. Then again, she could just be masking her symptoms quite well.
“I’ll take it for now.” Mimi volunteered, walking towards Misty.
“Are you sure, Mimi?” Bud asked.
“I’ll be fine.” Mimi shrugged, immediately starting to take the Sceptre off of Misty’s rucksack. After what she and the others were told about this thing, she honestly didn’t want to hold it. But she felt like she had to. The boys were already affected by it already and now apparently Misty. There was no way to know if Bud would be affected much faster since he had already held it beforehand. They can’t afford to slow down right now. Misty reluctantly allowed the Sceptre to be taken off of her. She can get it back later. Despite her thinking that though, she was still looking back at the gorge. Those few minutes were a pain for her. She still didn’t understand why she didn’t run off, but she was beyond caring at this point. Now she was just conflicted. Why? Why did these idiots care about each other so much? Dude and Candi could’ve died, but they were able to pull together to help them. This doesn’t make any sense.
“I don’t get it…” Misty muttered as she worked to secure the Sceptre to Mimi’s rucksack. Why was she speaking? Maybe she just felt this need to be heard. “Dude could’ve left Candi behind, but he didn’t. And you all could’ve let them both fall, but you didn’t. Why?”
“Not to sound cheesy or anything, but we’re all friends here. We look out for one another.” Mimi smiled knowingly.
“Also we’re a gang. We stick together.” Bud keenly added. Then he noticed how far the others had gone since they had this quick exchange. “Speaking of which, let’s try to keep up.”
Stick together? Was there any point in sticking with these fools? Especially considering what she had planned?
No! Stop! You don’t care about them! You don’t! Just focus on your own mission here! You’re so close!
Then why am I feeling guilt?
