BIOGRAPHY

Born Constance Gloria Mary Carson, Bonnie has lived the first 17 years of her life as ‘Connie May’ (don’t ask where the ‘May’ comes from. Bonnie herself suspects it might be a shortened version of her third name, ‘Mary’, but she has no idea.) in the beautiful and depressingly tragic town of Rolling Fork, Mississippi. With a population of just about 1, 300 and absolutely nothing to do all day except watch the trains roll in and out, really the perfect place to grow up. The Carsons were a family of seven, with Bonnie the second oldest and in charge of childcare most of the time, since her parents worked all day. No need to mention that they were, well, dirt poor. Still better off than most of their neighbours and friends, but dirt poor, nonetheless.

From the get-go, Bonnie knows she’s different, because everyone around her, her friends and classmates, they just accept their situation.  That they’re going to live life as their parents have, get married, have kids, have a job that has you living off scraps, knowing the furthest you’re ever gonna get from here is Louisville, if you’re lucky. And to top it all off, everyone was was seemingly so content with not being happy, either! It’s infuriating. It causes tension in her family from the moment she starts to talk. – Rolling Fork has a large black population and, despite being in the middle of the intolerant shitshow that’s Mississippi in the late 50’s, when Bonnie’s parents are too busy working, they ask their neighbours to take the kids to church. And they don’t take them to their usual ‘sing a hymn and pray to make it outta this town alive and with half of your sanity intact’ service. No, where they’re going there’s always music and laughter, and gospel, worship in the way that even Bonnie can get behind. It’s her neighbours that introduce her to Sister Rosetta Tharpe and Ray Charles. There’s few fond memories of home, but one of them is dancing around the living room to ‘I Got A Woman’, standing on her father’s feet.

She’s seventeen and just about finished with school and turning down two marriage proposals a week because she still hasn’t let go of her dream of getting out of there when Clyde rolls into town and turns Connie into Bonnie, by a simple mishearing of her name when she introduces herself. They’re so … everything that Rolling Fork is not and the attraction is instant and mutual when she confides in them her dreams of running away. That her father is secretly supporting her, giving her the very little he has extra at the end of the week, which isn’t much but god, does she appreciate the gesture. That her mother, playing matchmaker as often as she does, seemingly wants nothing more than to sell her off to the highest bidder, get her out of the house as fast as possible, because she might be her daughter, her own flesh and blood, but at the end of the day she’s just an extra mouth to feed. Her older brother married his sweetheart the second they turned eighteen. Bonnie has no intention of doing things as fast, doesn’t even want children if she thinks about it. Definitely doesn’t want to end up like her parents, and she wonders how long they’ve been unhappy for.

Clyde’s idea to run away and live on the road is ludicrous, but God is she desperate, and God they’ve never been more attractive to her than in this moment so when she sneaks out in the middle of the night with most of her stuff left behind and only a note to her father that she’s happy and safe, she’s not mournful but excited. She’s still 17 but they find a preacher willing to marry them for a few crumpled bills slid beneath the table and the next day she’s a new person. A new name and a new surname, too. A new life.

Life on the road is turbulent and ever-changing and by god, her and Clyde scream at each other every other day, but she’s never regretted her decision to move on with her life. Because at the same time it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to her, even if the RV is small, even if they have to make ends meet by doing some questionable things (no, fuck that, she fully supports robbing the rich blind, and she fucking enjoys doing it, too). She loves it. She loves Clyde, maybe not in the most conventional of ways for a married couple but she does, she loves them. And she even finds herself growing fond of the other Con Jobs they’ve picked up along the way. She’s never wanted to be a mother or any of that shit, but being the sole carer for her three younger siblings leaves its mark, and though she tries to hide it, Bonnie can’t help but care when there’s a lost soul that needs her help. Sue her. – One rule, however, has never wavered these past thirteen years of the road. Nobody touches the goddamn radio, she’s got full control over it. Even if she wants to take a trip down memory line and listen to Sister Rosetta Tharpe sing her best gospel hymns. Even if she indulges her inner child with Madonna’s latest hits. Hands – off !

eventually, you guys become fond of each other and he feels more comfortable sharing things with you, beyond just basic pleasantries. slowly, your conversations go from “yes, i’ve taken my medicine” to “i’m glad i can take a break from my hero duties” to “sometimes... i don’t know if i’m good enough to be the number two hero”. as he starts opening up to you more, you manage to see past his facade and catch a glimpse of how complex of a person he really is. he’s so much more mature than you thought he could be, and you also never expected him to feel so inadequate about his abilities. his complicated emotions and thoughts intrigue you, especially because you find people to be rather interesting. he’s not just the number two hero you have to take care of anymore. he becomes a friend to you, someone you look forward to seeing when you go to the hospital every day. and eventually, the feelings start to creep in and make their home in your heart.

he likes listening to you talk as well (cheeky bird would definitely press the call button a few extra times just so he could see you more) and loves listening to you rant when you’re feeling tired or down at work. it makes him feel like you can depend on him too, and that it’s not always him who’s sharing about his life; he wants to help you carry your burdens as well, not always you being the one listening to and shouldering his.

after weeks of being in recovery, he’s finally fit enough to leave the hospital. he’s usually pretty confident and laid-back, but he becomes uncharacteristically anxious when he thinks of asking you if you’d like to keep in contact. he approaches you, saying that he’s been discharged and is on his way out of the hospital. you smile at him and he feels a pang in his gut because he doesn’t want this to be the last time he sees it. his palms are literally sweating but he sucks in a breath and nervously asks you for your number. when you blush and shyly give it to him, he sighs with relief and smiles because he’s glad at least you want to see him as much as he wants to see you. and he’s excited because finally, you won’t be in your scrubs and he won’t be your poor bed-ridden patient anymore.

your relationship steadily grows after that, especially because you share similar morals, interests and the same passion for helping people and making them feel better. you guys fit together perfectly; he brings joy to your life and helps you loosen up and enjoy the little things while you keep him grounded and steady, being his voice of reason and keeping him in check. he’s there for you like you are for him and eventually, he realises you’re the one he wants to spend the rest of his life with. he becomes fully committed to you, doing everything he can to win you over. some birds do mate for life after all, and he just knows you’re the one he wants to be with forever.

also yes, smexy time with this man would be exciting and spicy, especially with his defined muscles (like, have you seen this man) and his quirk that can literally manipulate feathers according to his will. he will never fail to make you feel loved in every sense of the word.
