Anon, I'll be honest I'm not fully sure what your intentions are with this message… I've been in the Vocaloid, UTAU and Vsynth trenches since 2010. That may not be 16 years worth of time here, but it's still a long time to be a fan of one thing considering it's about half the time I've been alive. So that means I'm going to impart some knowledge here that newer Vocaloid and Miku fans may not understand (Especially anyone coming to my account after being introduced to Miku through Project Sekai).

Miku is, by all definition, an instrument. A voicebank is an instrument. It is a tool used to create music. The only thing that truly sets her apart from other electronic instruments or music making software is that she has a 2D mascot assigned to her to make her more marketable. That mascot was meant to be 16, yes. I will not deny that fact. Her voice bank even turned 16 years old this year since she was released way back in 2007! Happy 16 years of physical existence to your original disc-based software, Miku! So her Mascot associated as the face of the voicebank is 16 in both her physical age since launch and what's included in her original bio in that software and on the Yamaha website. If you wanted to say she was 16 years old at birth, then she'd actually be 32 years old this year if she actually aged. But her mascot doesn't age, just like all mascots of goods and brands do not age (Except for the Planter's Peanut guy I guess???). If this was a character from an anime that was always portrayed as a 16 year old and never anything else ever, it would be different. But only the 2D mascot tied to the voicebank and used as a marketable image is 16.

Now here's the part where saying she's always 16 years old all the time no matter what makes you look a little silly.

As an instrument and voicebank, Miku has been used to tell stories and fill roles much different from the bio of her software mascot. She's a medium to tell stories through, just like human voices are! She is whatever the person using her to tell a story wants her to be. This could be the VocaloP, the illustrator, or even the person creating the music videos deciding her age. Sometimes she's used as the stand-in voice for the person using her to tell the story, perhaps because they themselves aren't confident in their singing ability or wish to remain anonymous like in PowaPowaP's songs. Sometimes she is just her default voicebank self like in KIRA's Digital Girl. More often than not, she's portrayed as an original character the person using her made up in their head like she is used in mothy_悪ノP's The Evillious Chronicles. She can be anything.

She's literally the target demographic for those unpaid internship listings on job app websites that ask for 30 years experience in the field before you should even consider applying for the internship. Those aren't targeted at you, those employers want Hatsune Miku. Obviously.

That said, I don't think it's fair to apply the default voicebank mascot info to her if the person using her voice or image says otherwise.

If we really want to be picky here, the Kagamine voicebanks are even younger than Miku according to their software mascot info (15 years old), but VocaloPs wasted absolutely no time using Len to sing songs like SPICE! and Gigantic O.T.N. and Rin to sing songs like Alluring Secret ~ Black Vow ~. They were both used to sing songs like Corrupted Flower and if you also want to count violence as a mature theme here, Karakuri Burst. Does that mean they're 15 years old in any of those songs? I don't know. The person who wrote the song or the person who made the art for the music video might know, but I definitely don't. I also don't have the right to decide that specific bit of info for them since I am just the viewer.

The case is the same for the special Pokemon collab "What if Miku was a _type trainer?" series. I'm not the illustrator of each of the Trainer Mikus, so I don't know anything other than what they look like, just like the rest of the general public. The only people who have the right to decide the canon age of the Pokemon trainer Mikus are the people who illustrated her (and maybe whoever was directing the collab in the first place). Not me, not you dear anon, and not even KEI, the original illustrator and character designer for the mascot of the voicebank known as Hatsune Miku have the right to decide the age of the Trainer Mikus. The people actively telling a story with Miku are the ones who decide who she is, where she is, and what she is. Until we are told the Trainer Mikus illustrators' exact intentions, ages are up for interpretation and no one's interpretation is a cold hard fact.

The only times the person using the software or image of the mascot can't choose what age the character is are when there are specific rules listed in the software manual or on the official website. As an example, I'm about 98% sure the voicebank for Kaai Yuki has restrictions for what types of songs she can be used in since the voice providers for the voicebank were actual children. That's the only exception I am personally aware of within the official Vocaloid brand voicebanks by Yamaha. There may be non-Yamaha voicebanks, UTAUs and VSynths with similar restrictions that I am unaware of.

Now that you've been given a small history lesson on voicebanks and the fact they're used to tell stories as all instruments are, I'll give a more personal reply.

If your ask was sent in response to me tagging the Dark type Trainer Miku art with "I'm gay" in my reblog, you may be taking Tumblr and social media as a whole a little too seriously. Dark type Miku is pretty and I love dark type Pokemon and trainers, always have. I've been a Mawile fan since the Pokemon was still considered a Dark-Steel type and it took me a very long time to stop being upset when they switched Mawile to a Fairy-Steel type. Anyway, if we're being honest, I wish I looked like Dark Type Miku. This is the response of a nonbinary lesbian desperately wishing they could look as good as Dark Type Miku. I'm not lusting after her, I'm not lewding her. I just wish I was as hot as she is in this artwork.

If you don't agree with anything I've said in my reply to this ask, then please do not continue to make yourself uncomfortable by interacting with me or my social media accounts. Please block me if you must! I highly recommend blocking accounts and muting tags that make you uncomfy! I do it all the time! So someone before I uh deleted my blog someone asked about my Oc's, I believe it was @ardienothesieno, if not sorry for tagging you my guy!

We'll specifically be looking into the New Constellations group in the order they were found and added in.

Starting with Gazing Within Stars (grey) and Whispered In Roots (pink)

Stars and Roots originate from the same local group, with him being the oldest and senior and her being the newer cheerful addition. Stars is like the sweet old grampa on your street who will listen to you ramble for hours, even if he doesn't understand what you're talking about. He gives great advice and encouragement to younger gens, helping and talking them through their frustrations with the problem and their ancients. Roots is very peppy and upbeat, never getting deterred or tired of working on the problem, due to Stars influence on her she tends to not dwell on past mistakes or hold onto the anger and negative feelings her ancients left her with after ascension and makes the best of her circumstances. After their original group had collapsed and it was just the two of them, she was to one to offer the idea of looking for iterators in the same situation as them, trying to get Stars out of his depressive state and working again. Eventually he agreed and they soon found another stranded iterator.

Longing Etterath is an early gen 2 iterator, due to poor placement of the rest of his group, they collapsed and went offline some time after the ascension. Etterath was not notified due to having his communications turned off and once he bothered to check in on them, that's when he realized they were gone. Etterath wasn't to thrilled to join a new group, but Stars and Roots were persistent and Etterath eventually caved joining them (begrudgingly). Over time he warmed up to them, talking to them often and with less insults over time. Once he had decided that they wern't completely useless distractions he agreed to help look for other iterators with them, if only doing the bare minimum so he could go back to diverting his resources back to solving the problem. It wasn't to long till he stumbled across another iterator, much to his displeasure.

Saturns Foley is a late gen 2, his communications with his group were shut off by his ancients once they departed, though he wasn't aware of this and thought his group had cut him off. It didn't phase him though as he is a bit chaotic at times and figured he was too annoying. He gave up on the problem early on, deciding on observing the natural fauna around him and indulging in music and movies his ancients left behind. When Etterath contacted him he was quick to spam him with messages, excited to be in contact with another iterator after so long (and also info dump to some one). He instantly hit it off with Roots, exchanging memes and photos of scav pups and slug pups. Stars fell victim to many of his ramblings or theories about the Void but enjoyed listening none the less. Foley ended up being the main one to scan the radio waves looking for other iterators when he found a distress call from the final member of the group.

Waves Upon Open Skies was built in the middle of the ocean, she's a later gen 1, so their wern't too many iterators during her first cycles and therefore never had a local group. Due to her being built so early in the ancients overlooked the fact that the ocean waters would rise with every new iterator built, damaging her structure. While her ancients were alive it was manageable, but they departed without every fully fixing her structure causing it to start to flood later on. Her structure was built differently than other iterators so she was able to manage it for a time, but once she had began sending a distress signal she knew it was only a mater of time. Upon joining the group everyone was concerned for her well being, but she had assured them she had made peace with her situation, and would only like company for whatever time she had left, along with forwarding her iterations to Etterath who assured her he would work on them since she could not. She often watched movies with Foley and guided Roots through tougher projects. Stars constantly monitored her conditions and helps her find ways to stretch her time with them.

So everyone in the Winx fandom, doesn't matter where you are most active knows the drama about.... yeah basically everything.

So I kinda wanna throw my opinion out there cus I don't want to let you wait for me to post the Mythix designs

I'm not going to cover every problem there is (cus there's a lot) and just straight talk about the main things:

The characters and how Nick changed them

Everyone probably knows about the things going on (especially TikTok) when it comes to hating specific characters, especially Bloom.

Now, I'm going to be as neutral as possible here. No hate towards everyone or the characters.

I understand that people dislike a specific character.

And I agree.

Partially

Let's take Bloom:

I really like Bloom, especially her younger self. But in the newer seasons, she gets even more attention, she takes the unnecessary spotlight, makes things about her and things are about her even if she's not/barely related to it.

Yes, I understand: she's the main character.

But what about, for example, season 5?

In my opinion, it should have been about Aisha. It was her home planet, her family and her people in danger.

But the creators HAD to drag in Daphne so that Bloom was in focus. And let Bloom defeat Tritannus since she is the main character.

She has no ties with him, so why let her get the final punch and not Aisha?

And Bloom. Really? Crying cus your shit Boyfriend didn't LOOK at you? Aisha's Boyfriend went into a coma/died and you are complaining about attention?!

This is not the Bloom I know!

In earlier seasons it made sense that Bloom was the main focus. But the creators didn't only focus on her, they equally devided the attention on all the Winx:

Musa's struggle with Riven, Musa's passion for Music and the loss of her mother, Flora and Mirta, Flora's building up confidence for Helia, Stella, her Father and the chaos in Solaria, Aisha's Trauma and trying to save Andros, Tecna and her feelings for Timmy, Tecna in the omega dimensions etc etc.

It was so much better and more interesting in earlier seasons since you get to know other characters more, and it felt like all of them were important, with a bigger focus on Bloom.

And that was completely fine!

But it's not just Bloom that changed: everyone was being downgraded by Nickelodeon so that she gets the Spotlight, and that just made the show loose it's unique style.

In the dubs (even in earlier seasons) everyone only talks about Bloom, not 'The Winx'.

In season 1 or 2 (I can't remember), some place got attacked and what did the people yell?

"where is Bloom?!"

In Season 4 where the pets get transformed by the Wizards, what did Stella say?

"Hit it bloom!"

In the second movie when the fairies fought the Trix, what did Tecna say?

"we would have defeated them faster if Bloom was here!"

....

That's not necessary.

Nick made them all look fucking incompetent if Bloom wasn't around.

And that's not true.

Sure they aren't as strong as her, obviously, but that doesn't mean they are weak.

But nope, Nick didn't like that and changed it, giving characters maybe 1 episode where they seem important and the rest is about Bloom.

Well not on my watch.

Now, something I want to do for my Sona au is quite related to this:

Since it's my Sona au (and I'm probably going to sound a little as a hypocrite here), I want my Sona to be in the Spotlight here.

But i'm not going to get rid of characters or make them incompetent and seem weak.

Unrelated to their powers or history: they all deserve attention, love, power AND A BACKSTORY nudge nudge wink wink to Flora and Tecna

I want them all to be back to their younger self, the ones we all fell in love with. The strong powerful inspiring girls and in edition my Sona.

I'm going into detail what exactly is going to change, but rest assured: your characters will be loved and cherished equally.

Imma try and organize everything a little as well, making links to the separate Winx Sona AU chapters, Transformations and changes.

swiss stuff:

he's actually much more of a cat person than a dog person (he still likes dogs tho)

and like, don't get me wrong- he loves cats in general

but he loves the chaotic, crack head, stupid ones especially

they match his energy and he thinks they're super cute

i feel like he (along with mountain) were the types as kits to bring in random animals like raccoons, opossums, etc and then just carry it around

like bring the animals to [the] papa[s] and just be like "look what i caught! can we keep him?!"

he has a red lava lamp that he once got for christmas from sodo in his room but it doesn't work right bc he shook it up

as a kit, he used to google different ways to prank people and he'd go on chaos sprees (commonly joined by dew as well)

poor rain suffered the most of his antics

he wasn't really close with any of the ghouls or ghoulettes specifically when he was new to them

he still isn't

he loves all equally, even if the others aren't the same way

peed in a sink once when he was high + drunk

mountain's personal bedroom bathroom sink specifically

whenever he sees babies, he smiles big (it scares them sometimes)

used to have a major biting problem when he was younger

phantom/aeon stuff:

when he was newer and needed ppl around to make sure he wouldn't get himself in any kind of trouble, all of the ghouls and papa were busy

so they left him with the ghoulettes

and they all watched mean girls together

he genuinely really liked the movie

but he was really easily spooked when he was first summoned

so the part when regina george got hit with the bus jump scared him

secretly related to that one character who didn't go to the school in that scene in the gymnasium (i hope this is specific enough)

thinks liz gillies is super pretty

also has a very wide music taste

he and swiss have a playlist they made together on spotify of songs they like and it's so much shit mixed together it feels like a fever dream when u listen to it in order

Okay but no I actually love listening to eowyg and tttygs calm before the storm back to back. Like you can just hear the growth and how much more complete they are in the updated version. Like to me it’s the clearest example of how essential Andy’s drumming is to their sound bc you hear the version without him and it’s so much less alive, it’s not nearly as interesting or full or just. Idk the og drummer isn’t bad but it’s certainly lacking Andy’s presence. Joes guitar parts are so much more developed and prominent and it feels like he got to be more front and center esp at in the bridge. The bridge itself is miles better in the tttyg version like eowyg it’s almost like they just decided to take a break mid song it’s very minimal. But the newer one is gorgeous and it’s simple but it’s so well composed and layered with all of them. The bass line is mostly the same from what I can tell but we all know that’s not Pete’s real impact. Pete’s changes to the lyrics for the new one! Or at least I’m assuming he was responsible for the verse updates. It feels like him. it makes me think more than anything of how often Patrick talks about how Pete’s words have such a unique rhythm inherent to them, bc the way Patrick sings the new one is so melodic and it fits so well where the eowyg version is just a little clunkier. And Patrick’s VOICE. I remember being younger and listening to cbts specifically in tttyg and the bridge through the end and being like?? This kid?? This is the kid who thought he wasn’t a singer? Because he’s sustaining ridiculous notes and vocal runs and it’s insanely good for his age and where they were and back then I just thought like it’s wild that he was so nervous back then about singing but on songs like that he’s just going all in. And then I found the eowyg one and went ohhhhhh okay because he didn’t start there. He didn’t have the capability or the confidence or the consistency yet. He did start out very rough and had to work his way up to belting out those high notes and the smoothness of his voice etc. So yeah going to tttygs version right after it’s just so satisfying because everything that’s good about it is showing off the core of what makes each of them so necessary to their sound, and what unique parts of the music each of them bring to the table that would make it incomplete without the whole band. Rambling but eowyg is. Eh. But I’m glad we have it if for nothing else than I love the comparison between those versions of the song

anon i don’t have nearly HALF the coherency for good song analysis like you do but it’s like as i read ur ask i found myself going “hey yeah i DID notice that” or “that’s actually a really good point”

but one part i can say is that eowyg is really lacking in terms of like. everything? knowing what fob can actually do might be tainting my opinion on this but listening to it makes me wonder how their actual songwriting processes in and of itself had changed in the time between evening out and tttyg because the guitar sounds wildly different and in tttyg it sounds like there’s actually more then two guitars playing when evening out relied on two guitar lines presumably between joe and trick

and patrick’s VOICE the stark difference between the overstrained eowyg vocals vs tttyg where patrick sounds much fuller and let’s his actual throaty deep voice out, in eowyg it feels like he was focused on sounding pop punk and hitting notes that he didn’t even think he could hit when in tttyg he was more focused on the melody and keeping his runs even

yknow i think the thing is simply that nowadays the things i latch on to like some sort of limpet aren't books as they almost exclusively were when i was younger.. i was always shocking normal about tv unlike my siblings and i was just constantly reading However a significant amount of my reading time was just rotating between which one of my favourite like four book series i was rereading ... in recent years however i have discovered the true joys of television & audio drama & music (& of course internet fandom so i can see other people talk about my interests &c) so idk honestly i think i've always been like this i've been wondering if this was a newer thing but i believe your average guy doesn't wonder how much time later he can reread a specific percy jackson book so he has time to forget some of the words on the page

Where he lived was often plagued by petty criminals and their family's shop (an already struggling business) was often the go-to place for petty criminals who just wanted the thrill of doing something bad rather than people in genuine need. After experiencing many break-ins and having an overly stressful time growing up, he became apathetic to life from a young age. They were seemingly unfazed by anything. After high school, Taylor makes music in their free time while helping their parents with the shop. He loved music and knew it was likely one of the only things he cared about outwardly. However, she never wanted to attend a school for music to disappear in a desperate attempt to find their big break. So, at age 20, they look after their younger siblings, slowly take over his parents' business as they grow older, and he tolerates the life he's living. Somewhere along the way, they realised they were generfluid and bisexual and their family were supportive, despite not initially understanding the terms. Their music let them make some extra money, which they put into the family's savings account and kept small amounts so he could get piercings, buy his siblings new clothes and make sure everything stayed afloat. The financing was helped by their slightly younger sibling Yvie, who is 18 at the beginning of the story.

Taylor discovered his powers at 20, completely out of the blue, during a sudden surge of passion and joy, the first extreme positive emotion she'd experience in years. Almost immediately, they made contact with Kai due to their similar feelings of responsibilities for their relatives, which had been part of what caused the emotional influx. However, they do nearly burn down the building they were in, so that was not good.

Taylor was unable to decide about going to the monastery, as he didn't want to just up and leave their family with nothing. So, they broke and told Yvie to receive their advice. Yvie hit him for even suggesting not going. So, as yvie was 18, they became the manager of the family business and was in charge of the family's finances as Taylor left to find the monastery. Yvie and Taylor told their family Taylor had been given an opportunity to travel with a small band for free. As their music continued making money, and as Taylor's younger siblings were able to get jobs to earn their own money, the family were able to save more and slowly become more comfortable in simply existing. Taylor was finally convinced to leave by receiving Avneesh's letter.

Taylor remained apathetic (seemingly just very chill and light-hearted) for a while at the monastery. When they began making a specific team structure, Taylor didn't really care for what position they took. They ended up becoming the media rep for the team; whenever they did interviews, their light-heartedness was often what avoided people panicking and Taylor had a talent for getting people to listen or to keep talking (many years in customer service.) Their fighting style is Melee a majority of the time, their weapons consisting of mallets, swords and katanas however they increasingly use ranged weapons, such as the large bow they use with Adrian. They also later learn to use throwing knives and shurikans, and their morphweapons often include an ability to fire bullets or arrows. Taylor is able to ambush enemies, sneak, and hide easily. He isn't the fastest or strongest member of the team, but they learnt how to sneak from dealing with home invasion and burglary A LOT. Taylor is able to identify risks to revealing locations and often stops the team from stepping into traps by being extremely aware of their surroundings.

Taylor struggles to learn how to harness their powers, often resulting in their coming in strong, uncontrollable bursts, then being very weak and impossible to use. Over time, Taylor learns control the strength of their powers and develops complete control over when and how they use them.

Taylor was happy being around the team and enjoyed the family dynamic they developed over time. Even though she tries remaining at least civil with his team, it is clear he and Adrian do not get on well. They are polar opposites in attitude, fight style, and behaviour, despite their similar desires, worries, and views on the world. This is why it's so hard for them to find balance when working together.

Taylor's family finds out he's a ninja when an extremely violent burglary takes place at their shop. She returns home to support them and brings Avneesh and Kay with them. Their family overhear Avneesh and Taylor arguing about Tay keeping their family completely out of the loop, and the truth comes out. They're supportive but deeply worried, and there's some arguing about only Yvie knowing what's actually going on.

Week 1 Blog Essay, Matilda

The 1996 movie, Matilda, came from the book written by Roald Dahl but was directed by Danny DeVito in his own comical version. I first watched this movie as a young girl with my dad a few years after it came out. I remember the inspirational/whimsical music that made it the film that it was. But, maybe the reason I liked it so much was because it was about a little girl my age with powers that seemed almost real enough to be true. 

This movie cost about 36 million dollars to make and after it came out it made only about 33 million. It didn’t fail, in fact it was a hit, but it made less money that it cost them to make. In the terms of the box office it was considered unsuccessful. However, in its opening weekend it made about 8 million dollars then alone. The director of the film, Danny DeVito, appealed to an audience of a younger age group with its humor and sarcastic comments as he told the story of a young girl. Perhaps the reason the movie didn’t become successful in its earnings was because of the audience it attracted. 

It wasn’t that it was poorly filmed, in fact Matilda’s powers are quite realistic in the eyes of children, but that the film was directed towards kids. It includes comical elements that both kids and adults can find funny, while being based on the book written by Roald Dahl. 

It stars a witty, young girl, Mara Wilson, who plays the main character Matilda. This movie was big in her career as a young actress, even though it wasn’t as successful as it was predicted to be. The movie features special effects to portray the powers of the young girl who is able to move things with the power of her mind. 

The movie portrays an American family who basically neglects their youngest daughter and because of this it might be seen as sad or offensive to some audience members. There are also scenes of the principle disciplining kids, even though it's meant to be funny, which can seem worrisome to parents and kids possibly. But, as the story unfolds, she becomes an elegant and smart girl with a bright future. The movie was also based off of a book written by Roald Dahl which eventually became much more successful years after it came out. A famous scene from the movie comes from Matilda’s first day at school when her teachers asks the class hypothetically what the answer is to “13 times 379” and she immediately responds “4,927.” 

The critical estimation of the movie has changed quite a bit in the past few years because of its new and reimagined film, Matilda the Musical. This film features a much more whimsical appearance with the use of songs and dances. It still appeals to a similar audience but has a different take on the classic story written by Dahl in 1988. Recent reviews of the Matilda movie directed by Danny DeVito have become more positive, attributing much of its originality to DeVito himself. His version features a classic tale, while the newer musical version takes on a more preppy, lively tale. 

The movie can be seen as both conventional and unconventional in the sense of the story line. In terms of a conventional movie, Matilda follows the theme of a young girl who is neglected for being smart, and then by the end she finds someone who fully embraces who she is and can finally use her powers for good. On the other hand, the unconventionality lies in the details like the nasty, mean principal who disciplines children with physical abuse. For example she throws a child over a fence with her braids, and even puts children in a small closet with spikes in it. The purpose of this is to bring a humorous element, but can be taken the wrong way if viewed by a specific audience.

The historical information about this film proves that it was quite unsuccessful in its total earnings. The movie was directed by a particularly well known actor, Danny DeVito. He is also featured in the film as the fraudulent father of Matilda. This is significant in the way he acts, and then contradicts himself as the narrator in the movie. Upon my first time watching this movie, I felt inspired by both the young girl and the teacher who eventually adopts her because they both were heartfelt characters. They brought joy to me unlike the parents of Matilda and the principal. The movie does a great job of helping the audience gain a sense of who each character is by their dramatic actions. 

After watching the movies many years later, I still feel the childlike happiness that it brought to me when I watched it for the first time. I think this is because of the way Matilda is a motivated and intelligent girl from a young age, and also because she overcomes the evil in her own world. The ending of it, while conventional, still brings relief to the viewers because she and her teacher no longer have to worry about the bad people in their lives. There are no loose ends and it is a typical happy ending that the viewers hope for.

Why are these older rockstars still doing tours like what’s with retirement and letting the newer bands get their light

They enjoy touring, and it earns them money. That's why they do it. I don't see the harm! If it's an enjoyable experience for the bands and fans, why shouldn't bands keep touring?

I honestly don't think any older bands are taking the spotlight from younger bands. Some older bands (not calling anyone out) are pretty purely nostalgia acts at this point. That doesn't at all take away audiences from newer bands. The people that have interest in those bands likely wouldn't have interest in seeing newer bands live anyway. Also, these bands aren't exactly super in the spotlight anyway, save for within their fandoms and specific music fan subgroups. They're in no way stealing attention.

Other older bands are still very much active in the music scene. Should Metallica not tour for their new album, because they've been around since the 80s? No. That would be stupid. The band wants to tour, and the fans want to see them. Plus, to continue the example, they're touring with newer bands such as Architects, Greta Van Fleet, and Mammoth WVH. This gives newer bands further exposure since Metallica has a very large fan base, and some of their fans are older and not exploring new music otherwise.

Newer and older artists will always co-exist. Their audiences aren't mutually exclusive, but there's always going to be people that have interest in both. Someone being a fan of new music doesn't necessarily mean they'll never explore older music, and vice versa. Also, lots of people see multiple concerts in a year. You can see a combination of artists. I promise that older bands touring isn't hurting newer bands.

Since you like music, what's the first album you've ever bought and what's your favorite album of all time?

Oh my goddd Nonny you're really trying to make me out just how much of a fossil I am aren't you? I'm actually fuzzy on the FIRST album I ever bought because I have bought so many in my life...but one of the earliest ones that stands out has an amusing, back-in-my-day story for you.

When I was in college, you still had to buy physical CDs for the most part to listen to music. Buying or listening digitally still wasn't much of a thing. The town I went to college in was pretty small, and if you wanted music there was two options - there WAS a small local record store, and there was a Wal-Mart. Now, this was also back when Wal-Mart only sold censored copies of albums - radio-edited, clean versions that labels were forced to make specifically for them because they had that much buying clout and their policies demanded it.

But I wanted Rage Against the Machine. (I forget the exact album, I think I was collecting a back catalogue so I want to say it was Evil Empire)

Do you have any idea how deflating the idea of buying a toothless, censored version of Rage Against the Machine at a Wal-Mart was??? It felt like missing the entire point of the album. Needless to say, I had the small town record store special order it, the owner looked at me like I was nuts because I wasn't asking for whatever country artist was hot at the time, and a month or so later I finally got to toddle on back to my dorms with the CD. All its rage still intact.

My favorite album of all time is still Jeff Buckley's Grace. If I had to be exiled to a desert island with just one, that would be it. Between the songwriting (those lyrics!) and his voice and the sheer talent, I never get tired of it.

Favorite artist is so hard, why do you do this to me? I could cheat and say Jeff again because it's true, but also in terms of nostalgic but I keep coming back to them? AFI perhaps, or Dashboard Confessional. I have so many life memories tied to those bands and the times I have seen them in concert and the people I was with, it makes me remember all of them every time I dial them up. Pearl Jam was also super formative...although I never got to see them play live when I was younger, I actually was gifted tickets and just got to see them last month!! Bucket list checked off. If I had to pick a newer artist, I think I would say London Grammar. Hannah Reid's voice just punches me in the gut every time I hear her, in the best of ways.

Favorite song? Gonna be cheesy AND share a tidbit: My wedding song.

Itchy

I don’t really know why I enjoy the music so much, but sometimes bands just click on first listen? I guess it’s the catchy guitar riffs and very sort of early 2000s pop punk vibes I really enjoy. Also they have done a lot of great lyric work especially on the new german albums. That being said I think the most important part is that all of them are really very sweet and kind people (and also a bit crazy?). I don’t think any other band I know has so much fan interaction. Also this band is the reason for so many very good friendships. The concerts really just always feel like a family meeting. <3

Donots

Ok this one might be down to my specific obsession at the moment. Went to the concert with my best friend two weeks ago and it really was a blast. Still one of the best live bands I know. I especially enjoy their old english stuff because it feels very nostalgic and upbeat. But same as with Itchy I also do appreciate the lyrics on the newer albums. Also Ingo makes the worst dad jokes ever. (That being said I’m in the Donots mindspace right now and I think most of it is Charlie’s fault anyway?)

Die Ärzte

Oh well here we go. As you might notice I’m a bit into the cult of weird german punk bands? I think once you know one of them you get to know all of them. Die Ärzte and I have a much longer history though. They’re my parents favourite band and it was basically all we listened to when I was younger. It’s still a very wild experience to listen to one of their songs and be like ‘hey where do I know this from I never listened to this before?’ (yes they have a loot of songs). And I feel like I am reapeating myself but truly they have the best fucking lyrics you will ever listen to and nothing can cheer me up like a random Ärzte song that contains only bullshit. They’re the masters of bullshit inside and outside of songs.

My chemical romance

I used to get really sad about the fact that I didn’t get into mcr before their breakup. Now after finally seeing them live this year I feel a lot better about it. It’s probably the band my sister and I share the most interest in. I don’t think I even have to say a lot about it. Yall know why they’re amazing. Just great music and so much sadness. And Gerard’s gender of course. Also shoutout to the random guy that hugged me while we were both crying during famous last words.

Green Day

Working myself up to probably the most important band in my life. I might not listen to them as much as I did, but still they somehow find their way in my top five every wrapped. It feels really cliché to say it, but they got me through some real shit when I was younger and I thinks that’s why I still feel so strongly about them. Also their music just really slaps, heavy guitars, so much variation and classics. I have to admit lyrics are not always the strong point here, but I can overlook that. That being said please go listen to warning. It is so underrated my favourite album of all time and I could write whole essays just about why. Also Billie bicon Armstrong was the reason I figured out I was queer so yeah thanks for that.
