The biggest barrier to my enjoyment of a lot of spn fic is how many writers take the things Dean says about himself and his relationship with women etc at face value... I am not saying you have to arrive at the same conclusions I did, but like, you have to understand that Dean Winchester is a character Dean made up. He is performing that guy, all the time, EVEN TO HIMSELF.

in what can surely only be bad news for my mental state, watching lazarus rising a few days ago has led me to rewatch s4 spn for the first time in 10 years (i'm hoping it ends at s4 or at the very most s5 because otherwise god help us all). anyways here are my thoughts about 4x10 heaven and hell

funny that the episode description has (julie mcniven, MAD MEN) because when i saw her in a .2 second scene in the mad men pilot i went oh anna's in this!

wow they really did just throw around the words whore and slut all the time didn't they

heaven and hell great episode just for letting three different female characters interact

can't believe i'm already starting with the "what was the reason" ten episodes into a 15-year storyline but WHAT was the reason for anna putting her hand directly over castiel's mark on dean while they fuck

uriel is SO good. i don't blame the actor for never returning to spn after the character died but man was he fun. also remember when we thought he was gonna be in the finale because he posted a picture of a field or something. that was crazy

okay wait heaven and hell bad episode for doing the ruby torture where she's naked with her breasts bound for... some reason

ah yes the cas staring at anna kissing dean then looking down and away scene we've all heard of it

cas's little puppy dog look after dean saves him. those limpid pool-ass eyes

unfortunately i think dean winchester will always be my little baby bird because i'm watching these episodes with a sort of playful ironic detachment (one might call it a "delusional girl" persona) but i see him crying about hell at the end of the episode and i'm like for the love of god will somebody please hug this man

hi friend. i'm very sorry you're having a hard time with this, and want you to know i understand. okay, so first of all, prioritize your safety/mental/emotional well-being foremost. this can seem difficult, especially if you're deeply entrenched in the fandom or your primary circle here on tumblr is - there can be a sense of worry that you'll lose your mutuals and connections if you pull back, but i promise your friends will care about you in however you decide to interact. a lot of the fandom is toxic, and rather than that dissipating over the past three years, it seems to have escalated? if that's troubling you, you are well within your rights to pull back.

it's hard to give specific advice because i'm not sure how you're still engaging. are you rewatching, but finding that taxing because of frustration with the poor writing/storytelling or upset about where it eventually concludes? my best suggestion is finding a good place to stop and taking time away from the show for a while, and instead finding something that makes you happier. this never means you can't go back! the show will always be there, there's nothing wrong with taking a break. (i kind of wouldn't suggest doing what i did which was quitting unexpectedly and cold turkey in a rage of upset lmao, but if you can find a place to pause that feels more cathartic than negative, that might be easier).

if not the show itself, but fandom that's distressing you, the best thing to do is step away from bad fanon, don't get into arguments (i KNOW the impulse to fight is strong. it is not worth it. especially if it's affecting you emotionally), block anyone who's being aggressive/triggering, blacklist any terms you need to (this can be everything from crit tags to ships to characters' names to episode titles to writers to the actors themselves. at my worst in 2021 i blacklisted dean - can you imagine? granted, this was an extreme overreaction of distress, but i had to have that space for a little bit just to recover and use tumblr in peace). if you're a fic reader, and finding that's occupying you in a negative sense because it's causing you to dwell too much, set that aside if you can too. again, you can always go back. none of the content is going anywhere. they can't be hurt by you detaching, the story isn't going to change, the characters aren't going to disappear. you are real and your feelings are paramount.

there is no reason to be causing yourself any stress or hurt over a show that's been done for nearly three years when the space around it is so volatile. if you still want to engage, do that on your terms and in a positive way, hang with likeminded fans, focus on the characters you love or whatever part of the story has worth to you, and ignore the rest. it sounds easier said than done, but this is fiction, it's supposed to be fun! if it's not fun anymore, you're right to leave or reassess. you deserve some healing and peace. <3

sorry this is really petty but like. this drama is so funny bc ultimately ppl are being accused of liking w*ncest just for like. being mildly dean critical. babes you know you can just block people for disagreeing with you. it doesn’t have to be that deep. in fact it’s literally the only way to survive fandom with more than a quarter of your brain cells left. anyway I’m a dean stan bc I imprinted on him as a child but when I see posts about how he sucks I either agree, disagree and ignore it (and sometimes just unfollow bc I’m curating the most fun online experience for myself as I should), or just say “that makes a lot of sense but it makes me sad so I’m just writing it out of my personal secret good spn”. Okay I don't plan on talking about this too much anymore but I'll take this as an opportunity to address some things

It is wild how lightly people are treating very awful accusations here. I understand being suspiscious before following someone, because I have accidentally followed people who put that content on my dash (untagged too! because i do have it blacklisted) and it felt so gross. But people are just taking anything they don't like as "sus behavior"

Here are things I've seen people honestly mention that makes you suspicious: obviously being mainly a Sam blog, being "dean critical", being too intense about liking seasons 1-3, shipping sastiel (????), posting mainly about the brothers and not about Cas, criticizing an actor, being reblogged by one of them (even though we also hate when that happens! but it's not something we can control because i don't know every single one of them in order to block) and of course being associated with someone else that's sus.

And here's where I completely agree with what you said: people could just block others for all those things without throwing accusations around! You can just say "most of Sam blogs, or all Sam blogs who don't post destiel, are annoying as hell and i'll block them all" and that's fine! Or, better yet, don't say anything, you don't need to publically announce when you block someone.

Also yeah, a lot of people don't add banners on every post or post nonstop about how gross the wincest shit is because we prefer to avoid it and not be constantly thinking about it. I have the tag blacklisted but I don't do a deep investigation of OP of every post that makes into my dash, and that's kind of a wild expectation.

Quick note on the "dean critical" thing, I've never seen a fandom so weird about people critizing a character. The whole reason people started using the tag was exactly so we could still hang out with people like you, who love him and maybe don't wish to see negative analysis on him, so you could have a tag to blacklist instead of unfollowing! And although it's the bare minimum, I respect the honest attitude of "I know this happened in the show, but personally it's not an aspect I want to read/write meta about" instead of straight up denying stuff.

It is a wild cycle, with so many people (including myself) rejoining the fandom recently it's like you could see us going from "this is fun! i'm gonna follow a bunch of spn blogs" to "this is mildly annoying" to "i hate all of you, blocking spree". Not to be a hypocrite, I was onboard with destiel for most of my time in the fandom, I think I fell out of love with the ship partially because of my rewatch (and it shouldn't be that weird that rewatching something as an adult your perception on it changes!) and partially because of the fandom being so very Like That about it. And the whole fandom experience once you leave that ship is just very different. The bitterfication of the sam girl or whatever.

I do still have destiel mutuals who I appreciate very much, I don't even blacklist the tag because y'all have some amazing artists and I'm always up for fanart, even of things I don't ship (of course with the exception of gross ships).

Anyways yeah it is so infortunate that all of this happened but we move on, idk if anyone took the time to read all of this because it turned more into me venting than anything else but I also appreciate the support i’ve been getting from some of y’all

Inspired by your ball handler post, I feel like I need to do a rewatch just to catch all the things that are retroactively homophobic now. The running gag of Cas picking female pop star names as his alias? That's a microagression now. Ditto for everytime some one acts like he's defective for developing feelings since those feelings were apparently GAY LOVE. The whole "forced to kill copies of Dean over and over again" is just actual conversion therapy, I think.

I didn’t even touch the creepy rapey stuff in that first post, either-- just Cas getting told to leave the bunker. But fair warning, there is a lot in that tag that does discuss the noncon and dubcon nonsense in that episode...

But Cas’s depression arc has been an ongoing facet of his character since at least 4.07, and has evolved to how it’s being shown now-- in his dealing with the Empty, which is a parallel depression metaphor equal to the Mark of Cain/the Darkness was for Dean back in s9-11.

Hey guys, I’ve got a friend @peacefulfaerie that’s kind of new to the whole tumblr thing (right now her blog is just in default mode) and I’m trying to get set up in a nice safe corner of fandom. She’s a general all-around Team Free Will fan, mostly Sam (but not, you know, an ESG), a few years behind on SPN but diving back into it to rewatch, not miss anything, catch up and try to get where we’re at. Another Rewatch

So my brother and I started watching Supernatural from season 1 about a month ago, and I was toying with the idea of doing this, and now that we’re on season 2, I’m gonna go ahead with it.
