I'm going to introduction to "Galaxicos Family" in my head cannon!!
Long years ago, when Albert was young student,
he met a beautiful woman at school.
She is Alicia. She is Albert's current wife.
And they were given an only son, Liffile.
Arnold, one of Andrew's best friends, is Refill's cousin, Albert's nephew.

Sin and Punishment (2000)
Tumblr media
once upon a time, a small company called Treasure existed. they made a bunch of awesome games but none of them sold particularly well, but that didn't stop them. until the early 2010's in which case they actually did stop. oops. either way they had a bunch of cult classics under their belt and had the idea to partner up with nintendo themselves to work on their first fully 3D game.
thus Sin and Punishment was made and it sold twelve billion copies and solved world hunger and world peace was finally achieved. just kidding, no one bought it because it was a japan exclusive N64 game, a country the N64 did awful in. a north amercian release was in mind from the very beginning (to the extent that all the voice acting is in english and not japanese) but it was cancelled because nintendo are cowards. thankfully they rectified this mistake in 2007 when it got released on the virtual console and it's been playable on all their main home consoles ever since. about time.
so what's the deal? why's this game so good? think star fox 64 with the plot of end of evangelion. it's a rail shooter where you have a rapid fire gun, the ability to melee enemies if they get too close, and a player character bound to the laws of gravity that can walk from left to right, jump, and dodge roll. there is also a worthless lock on mode that you should never use.
what follows is a non-stop barrage of action, explosions and vast amounts of awesome boss fights. so, like the best kinda games treasure made. BUT IN 3D!!!!!!! it's always a rush of energy and fun and there's never a dull moment. but it comes at a price: this game is horrifically short. you can easily beat the entire game in around 40 minutes, and aside from unlocking harder difficulties there's not that much of a reason to play again. except yes there is because the game is fun as balls and you can replay it to get a high score. i guess what im trying to say is think of this more as an arcade game rather than a full fledged AAA adventure, and you'll be good.
if you bought this game back when it first came out (somehow) the steep price would've been an issue. but if you have the nintendo switch online expansion pass, this is included in the nintendo 64 catalog for the low low price of 0 dollars. i mean, besides paying for the expansion pass but. you know what i mean. or you could pirate it that's fine too. either way, play this game however you can, it's the very definition of short but sweet. definitely treasure's best game on the N64, just narrowly beating mischief makers, and honestly one of the best games on the N64 in general. play it, you won't be disappointed.
9/10
NOTE: my favorite part was when saki turned into EVA-01 and said "AWW YEAH IT'S SIN AND PUNISHMENT TIME" and he sinned and punished the evil twin clone of the planet earth so hard it exploded. this joke is still funny right.

What I'd Hope A Star Fox Adventures Remake Would Be Like
I use tumblr as a dumping ground for my thoughts on various things. I fully believe no one would care enough to read any of this even if they did stumble on it at random. So that's why I'm slapping this post in. Just to get it out of my head because I'm frustrated there's no Star Fox on Switch... yet. There's very little hope but there is maybe like a 0.01% chance we'd get a Star Fox game.
For the past two weeks I've been thinking about Star Fox Adventures, my favorite Star Fox game because dinosaurs, staff combat, and collectables. However, the more I think about it the more major problems with the game make themselves known.
Such as Krystal being stuck inside a crystal for the entire game until the end where she joins Fox's crew without proving her qualifications. Along with Falco who just shows up. When and why did he just appear for no reason?
This is why I think Star Fox Adventures should have a full blown reassembly remake full new game with same name. Much like Star Fox 64 and Star Fox Zero.... Look, if Nintendo is willing to remake the first Star Fox they can do the same for the other three in the franchise.
It is my understanding that majority of Star Fox fans love the 3 branching paths from the first game. Therefore I think it would be a good idea to implement 3 paths with Adventures. BUT the paths are based on the character you choose. Those being Fox, Krystal, and Falco.
The reason for this is to give each of them their own story line instead of Fox soloing the krazoa spirits and force point temples. As well as give a reason for Falco being near dinosaur planet.
Fox's path might be the easiest with his focus being on collecting Force Point crystals. One for each classical element but different name like Volcano, Ocean, Sky, and Forest. Taking some inspiration from Ocarina of Time but so did the first iteration of the game. It would also be nice to see different Force Point Temples instead of the same two twice. I would also insist Fox have his blaster, keeping it the way it was before but replace staff combat with his Smash Bros set.
I'd also suggest Fox using the snow horn and earth walker as substitute landmasters. Feel like Fox using blasters on top of prehistoric creatures would be more fun. Particularly if you use controls similar to the landmaster for it.
Krystal would be focused on collecting the krazoa spirits because a mysterious mystical entity told her it would help save the planet. Unlike the Gamecube game, Krystal would not be ambushed by some... thing.... and trapped in a crystal. Instead, she continues searching for the spirits, fights sharpclaws with her staff, and returns the spirits to the mystery entity.
Each krazoa spirit would have a trial for her and she could upgrade her staff along the way.
Falco would be stealthier gameplay. Implementing disguise kit and 3D platforming more than the other two. He'd, of course, use the same type of combat Fox has but be faster.
Since the lore says he was bored of Star Fox not getting any jobs, I'd figure him being a solo merc bumming around would do well enough to explain what he was doing prior to dinosaur planet. Keeping the story solution simple, Falco gets hired by an old friend who came across files of Andros making deals with General Scales to supply higher technology on a low tech planet in exchange for magical secrets. Because magic exists in Star Fox universe. What else would krazoa spirits be?
Anyhow, that's how I explain Falco being on dinosaur planet. Just taking up a job to figure out what General Scales is doing now that Andros is (supposed to be) dead.
Not so subtle; Andros is the mysterious entity Krystal been giving krazoa spirits to and the giant monkey is using them to reconstruct himself as a resurrection ritual. Krystal's big boss fight is against Scales who seeks to resurrect Andros to continue their deal and take over dinosaur planet under Andros' empire.
Wanted to give General Scales more menacing presence this time around so I would have him be the big boss of all three paths before the final boss, Andros, which uses arwing gameplay (Krystal uses a cloud runner and her staff). The arwing gameplay reoccurs between land missions (Falco having the most arwing time).
For the most part the game would not be far different than the Gamecube one. However, various additions and small changes would be beneficial.
These are just my ideas for a game I don't think will ever be seen. Think there's a ton of people around the internet doing fan games of Star Fox implementing dinosaur planet with explosions and arwing and landmaster combat. Not sure if they're much better than my ideas of simply adding to the previous game. But it's still more than what Nintendo gives us with Star Fox.
I personally hope we get Adventures and Assault on Switch or at least Assault. Assault was more of a Star Fox game and it continued the story much better. Oh well, there's always 64 with the online subscription...

Star Fox 64 / Lylat Wars
Tumblr media Tumblr media
JP release: 27th April 1997
NA release: 30th June 1997
PAL release: 4th October 1997
Developer: Nintendo
Publisher: Nintendo
N64 Magazine Score: 91%
Tumblr media
Star Fox 64 (or Lylat Wars as I knew it as a kid) is a fast-paced on-rails shooter made by Nintendo. The gameplay is extremely solid. Fox’s Awring has lasers that you can charge up for a lock-on, along with limited bombs. Movement is fast and precise and you can perform loops and barrel rolls – the latter reflects bullets.
Tumblr media
If you complete levels normally, you’ll go through a really fun route through the game. On top of the on-rails levels, you’ll also encounter “all range mode” where you can fly in 3D. These typically aren’t as “cinematic” as the on-rails levels, but still a lot of fun.
Tumblr media
Slippy will get attacked by one of the bosses and will crash land on a planet, here you get to use the Landmaster, a tank that is also really fun to use. You can hover temporally and barrel rolls will now move you across most of the screen.
Tumblr media
To get to the credits for the first time, Star Fox 64 is a very short game, but that’s because it’s made to be replayed for a high score, and because it’s so much fun, you don’t mind doing so, trying to get a higher score than last time – but that’s not all of it.
Tumblr media
Most missions in the game has a secret objective, complete this and you’ll get “Mission Accomplished” and to a different mission, the “hard route” will take you across some more challenging missions, although personally this is my least favourite route of the games – while all missions but one of the missions in Star Fox 64 are good, I do think these are some of the weaker ones, plus the one bad mission is in this route.
Tumblr media
The underwater level. It’s slow, plodding and is rather boring. The bombs are replaced with infinite torpedoes which also light up the way, because the level is also dark and dreary. This is easily the worst part of the game, but at least its just the one mission.
Tumblr media
Some of my favourite missions are in the middle, including the best all-range mission as you fight an Independence Day-style UFO and the second Landmaster tank mission as you chase a train.
Once you’ve played all the levels, there are also gold medals to unlock, which are extremely difficult. A level select at this point would be nice so you wouldn’t have to work through previous levels, but it does provide something to work towards.
Star Fox 64 is a incredibly fun game, and one you can just have a quick blast through every now and then.
It’s action packed. It’s technically eye-boggling. It works on a number of levels, being easy enough to be fun but with taxing bits if you search for them. It’s got exciting music. It’s unpredictable. It’s imaginative. It’s got massive explosions. It builds up steadily to a spectacular ending. It’s got everything, in other words, that you look for in a good movie – but in a game. It’s brilliant.
- Jonathan Davies, N64 Magazine #3
Remake or Remaster?
A new console remaster would be great – have options to toggle between N64 and 3DS graphics, music and voices (using the higher quality original recordings for the N64 version), some level select options, (perhaps with separate leaderboards for doing induvial levels), widescreen and things like that.
Official ways to get the game
There is no way to buy a new copy of Star Fox 64, the only official way to play is to rent it via the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pak.
Other Versions
Star Fox 64 3D
The 3DS got a remake of Star Fox 64, with various enhancements. I personally think the graphic lack the charm of the original (especially the water on Corneria), and the new voice acting and music aren’t quite the same.
Re-releases
2003: iQue
2007: Wii Virtual Console
2016: Wii U Virtual Console
2011: Star Fox 64 3D (remake, 3DS)
2021: Nintendo Switch Online (subscription only)

Do Star Fox 64's bosses have different names in the Japanese version? I recently found out Vulcain's Japanese name is サンガー (Sanger?), and I thought that was really interesting. I wondered if any of the others were like that?
サンガー came from the sun (Solar is the sun of the Lylat System) iirc. The names of enemies that aren't considered real characters aren't really important parts of a game; they are often just corny puns, so the translator would change the name because it doesn't work in other languages.

This is a five-hour run for Majora's Mask with a four-player relay, for understandable reasons. They've got an incentive for the four runners to play the final boss fight together, on a single controller. Blindfolded.
I would not be shocked if it hits its goal before they change to the second runner.
(Meanwhile, there's a bid war for Star Fox 64 2k%, in which you finish the game with 2000+ hits, for who should survive Fox's wrath. It's a pitch battle between "Slippy" and "no one." Peppy and Falco are options but far, far behind. Peace is not an option.)

You magnificent bastard, books were read, etc.
I won't say this for everything in the game, but I do prefer the Landmaster / Titania level execution in "Star Fox Zero" to "Star Fox 64"'s interpretation. Watching debris rain in from the Sector β is really a sight to behold. I also don't feel quite as weighed down control-wise with the Landmaster as I did in the past. I mean, when it has a flying transformation, that's literal. But I wish to keep my point.
When I feel like I'm halfway decent at this level, I'll record it. Gotta polish the boss sequence, though. I've only gotten it to a two cycle.

In my 'tracking villainous themes played in a heroic fashion' journey I stumbled on the Star Wolf theme in Assault with its troubadour swag (they're antiheroes in that game)... That was nice and all comparing the different themes until my bf (who has not played any of these sorts of games) starting humming the 64 version and I'm like boss fight????? gamer moment
I was saying to bf that it's a bit absurd to be looking at Star Fox of all series but with video games you've got music as a major contextual cue for things happening for reasons, light story augmented by musical storytelling (in this case literal dogfight space opera), and consistently revisited themes over several decades which means you can see them doing different things with each iteration... I'm not technically in the know enough about music, but I think the slower tempo in the Assault version might have something to do with it sounding less villainous.
This was initially spurred by the fanmade Ben Solo theme which has Kylo Ren's leitmotif followed by something which sounds like it but for good boys who are good.
Yes, I am enjoying waiting and wishing and hoping for Cinder's leitmotif played in such a way that it sounds heroic, how did you know.

Game Clearing 2022: A Retrospective
It's that time of the year again, so let's look at all the games I beat.
Tumblr media
As you can see, I played a lot more than last year, so I'm going to talk about them after the cut.
Frogger 2: Swampy's Revenge: Jan 16 - Jan 16
If you've read my 2021 list, you know how much I loathed Frogger. Well, the sequel is thankfully a lot easier. Of course, without it being as frustrating, it's a lot shorter, but I'd say it's a more enjoyable experience.
Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition: Feb 4 - Feb 4
I said I would cover Murfy's Touch and Back to Origins here, so I will. Murfy's Touch was a neat set of levels with a surprisingly decent AI you have to guide through the levels. The only real drag was having no way to go back other than restarting the level. Back to Origins was pretty fun, though. A bit challenging and the Mosquito levels were a good change of pace. This convinced me to get Origins, which you'll see later.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land: Mar 27 - Apr 13
Kirby makes his transition to true 3D (not counting spin-offs), and I think he did it really well. The controls feel good, and the Mouthful Mode felt like a natural extension of the gameplay. I really hope they make another game like this!
Yoshi Touch & Go: Apr 27 - Apr 27
After all the tilting of Topsy-Turvy that got me tilted, I was a bit worried about this one. Thankfully, the touch and drawing controls are miles better than turning the system. One thing I dislike about this game is that it's a highscore challenge instead of a series of levels in worlds. If they had done that, I probably would have liked it a bit more.
Rayman Revolution: May 1 - May 8
There are plentiful ways to play Rayman 2, so I went with the PlayStation 2 version. I quite liked the platforming, and enjoyed some of the exploration. I didn't feel compelled to collect all the Lums, though. Maybe I should check out Hoodlum Havoc next year.
Star Fox 64 3D: May 13 - May 14
I must say, I really liked Star Fox 64 3D. I did play on 3DS mode, and with Gyro Controls off. I also decided it would make sense to complete both paths and every mision at least once. Flying the Arwing felt really nice, and I even managed to get a few medals and the warp in Sector X. Maybe I should try to get the rest of the medals sometime…
Bomberman Generation: May 14 - May 18
I really like the Super Bomberman series, but I've never played 64 or The Second Attack, so I was looking forward to it. I thought the unique bombs and the Charabombs were a unique idea, giving the bombing a puzzle-platformer aspect. I really didn't like the fact that some bosses where part of levels and others weren't. Near the end of the game, I got through what was basically a maze and then I died the boss, having to do it all over again. The Crush Bombers were fine to fight though.
Rayman Origins: May 19 - May 24
Oh boy, here's a game I really enjoyed! The platforming felt a bit tighter than Legends, and it had a pretty good amount of challenge to it, including the Tricky Treasure stages and The Land of the Livid Dead. I'm unsure which is better, this or Legends, but I'd say Origins is better for a single-player experience.
BAD END THEATER: May 30 - May 31
Here's something unique for this list, a visual novel! Like most VNs, I'm not going to talk too much about it, because I'd think you should go into this as blind as possible. All I'll say is, it was excellent from beginning to end, and I really want to check out more games made by this person, and more virtual novels in general.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge: Jun 16 - Jun 17
I love the TMNT Beat 'Em Ups, so I was hyped when this was announced. I even got a friend to join me. We did play on the hardest difficulty, which lead to us getting our shells kicked in the early game, but it evened out quickly. Part me wished I could have played with more people, but I had fun whacking Foot Soilders.
Viewitiful Joe: Jul 2 - Jul 4
This game is stunning to look at. I'd say the graphics still look great today. I enjoyed the combat, and it was fun learning how to properly use the Slow-Mo and Speed-Up. The story was also fun, and it truly felt like a cheesy superhero movie. I will definitely try to get the sequel.
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (NSO): Jul 4 - Jul 5
I remember playing this game on Wii Virtual Console, but I don't remember finishing it. So I played through it again! It was fun figuring out all the unique combinations. My favorites would be Fire-Bomb, Ice-Stone, and Spark-Stone. Outside the shards that require abilites from a different level, it was pretty enjoyable getting them. It's also funny the re-release got a Teen rating.
Klonoa: Phantasy Reverie Series: Jul 20 - Aug 8
I have not played any of the games in the Klonoa series, until now. And man, this was a great entrypoint for the series! I liked the platforming, the story, the characters, the music..! I realize this is essentially two games in one, but both of them are amazing. I am definitely going to play more games in the series!
Cult of the Lamb: Sep 3 - Sep 12
I really like this game. The Roguelike part was pretty fun, and the management part was great as well. I ended up doing the four areas out of order, but it wasn't a serious problem. The final boss was pretty awesome. Perhaps I should play more Rougelikes, as I really enjoyed my time playing this.
Splatoon 3: Sep 16 - Sept 17
New Splatoon game means a new campaign. While the campaign is usually a good way to re-familiarize yourself with the controls, I liked the gimmick in the hub worlds as well. Makes me wish I could use Little Buddy in the Turf Wars.
Pokemon: Fool's Gold: Sep 25 - Sept 27
There are a ton of Pokemon ROMhacks out there. But this one takes everything you know about the Johto games and turns it on its head by changing the types of every Pokemon! It even adds some new areas to explore! Also, the Sevii islands are included, but that's when the game starts using mon at the level cap, so I stopped playing there.
Slap City: Oct 1 - Oct 2
I've played Slap City basically since release, but now Ludosity has added Story Mode for almost all of their characters. It was pretty decent to run through, although like Melee's Adventure Mode, every character plays the same series of levels. At least you can unlock cool new colors to use in the online play! I'm a Jenny main.
Luigi's Mansion 3: Oct 21 - Oct 24
I feel like this game really combines the good aspects of both of the games before it. It's all one big location, but you also have the collectibles. Gooigi also provided some new elements to the puzzle aspects. Part of me wishes I got my brother to play through the story with me.
Earthworm Jim (NSO): Oct 22 - Oct 22
I've played both EWJ 1 and 2 before, on ZNES (remember that?), but I genuinely don't remember if I've beaten either of them. I did use Save States (or restore points as NSO calls them), but I used them at checkpoints and after every level. I liked the game overall, but screw Tube Race. This was also the first time I played the Genesis-only level, Intestinal Distress, which was neat.
Earthworm Jim 2 (NSO): Oct 22 - Oct 22
Now this was a tricky one. I'd like to say that I think I like EWJ2 more than 1, but I wouldn't say by a lot. The graphics and platforming gameplay is better here, however the levels that don't use the platforming are kinda hit and miss. I did not like The Frying King, and Puppy Love is vastly inferior to Andy Asteroids. The actual platforming levels are great though. And before you ask, I am not going to play 3D nor Menace 2 the Galaxy.
Pokemon Snap (NSO): Oct 29 - Oct 29
I've heard a lot of good things about Snap, and it's not that bad of a game. Seeing Pokemon coexist like real animals is still neat. My only real gripe is that it's very short. I did snap a photo of all 63 mon though! Perhaps I should check out New Pokemon Snap sometime in the future.
Pokemon Blue: Oct 29 - Oct 30
I'm going to be real, I have never properly beaten a Gen 1 game before. I have played FireRed and LeafGreen many of times, but never the original games. And I have technically beaten it before, but that was through the glitch that warps you to the Hall of Fame. Playing through it, I did have a lot of moments where I realize how the later gens have spoiled me with a much larger bag and the physical/special split. Still it was kinda fun, but I'd rather play FireRed and LeafGreen.
Pokemon Stadium: Oct 30 - Oct 31
When Pokemon Stadium 1 and 2 were annouced for NSO, I was reminded of the fact that the Transfer Pack wouldn't be possible. So, with the power of emulation, I simulated the add-on, and brought the team I used in Blue into the N64 game. I did use PKHex to edit my team, but all I did was remove HMs (something you can't do in Gen 1), evolve my Haunter, and set all my mon to same level. And I can safely say that even with a proper team, Gym Leader Castle is unfair. It really felt like when the enemy needed a move to crit or status, it did. Combined with trapping moves with Wrap and Fire Spin, it's just not a good time. And you know what got for beating Lance? An Omanyte, which I already had in my Blue save.
Pokemon: Emerald Rouge: Nov 8 - Nov 13
Another ROMhack, and this one's quite good. It takes the Gen 3 games and turns it into a Rougelike. It's such a neat concept, and it preforms it really well. I also played on the EX version, which adds things from the later games. The thing is that I am not truly done, as after you beat it for the first time, a lot of cool things are unlocked, which I won't spoil for you. I totally recommend checking this one out!
Pokemon Stadium 2: Nov 18 - Nov 19
After conquering the first Pokemon Stadium, I knew I would have to do Pokemon Stadium 2. So applied the same strategy. I played through Crystal (which I've done numerous times) and assembled a team. Then I had to play a bit of Gold, because the Mareep line isn't in Crystal. Traded it over, added it to my team, and began the Gym Leader Castle. It's already a bit easier since you don't need to worry about things like Wrap. The AI still cheats though, and they'll use strategies like Toxic Stall on you. The Kanto side much easier than the Johto side, since you just have to fight the Gym Leaders themselves. And Red, whom is normally a formidable foe, I beat him first try! It's probably because he didn't try to status me, but it was an actual fight. Now, you might be wondering, am I going to play the Colosseum games? Probably not!
Also, a new thing I'm doing this year is a ranking. I feel like it'll better explain my experiences with each of them.

I made one for 2021, as well.
