“This is another of my grandfather’s cheap jazz LPs; a 1983 reissue of a 1964 recording. I knew nothing about Earl Hines before listening to it, and I know slightly less than nothing now, but I do like his delightfully light, yet complex and melodic piano playing. . Here he performs with his Trio, that perfect combo of piano, bass and drums that always astonishes me just how much sonic range it can cover. It kicks off with some boogie woogie on Frankie and Johnnie, but the other tracks are less rough and tumble, more in keeping with swing. He brings something new to classics such as The Girl From Ipanema and St James Infirmary Blues, providing vocals himself on this song and Trav’lin All Alone. . Hines was a contemporary of Louis Armstrong, playing piano in his Hot Five. Later he led his own big band at Chicago’s Grand Terrace, effectively becoming Al Capone’s ‘Mr Piano Man.’ In the early 1930s his band were the first Black big jazz band to tour America’s segregated south, a harrowing experience by all accounts. He also gave Charlie Parker his first break, before firing him from the band for poor time-keeping – as in turning up late to rehearsals, not his musical performance. . After the end of the big band era, Hines returned to playing solo and with his Trio. He toured extensively in his later years, playing for Presidents and the Pope. The track Avalon here is a wonderful example of just how electric and adventurous his solo piano playing could be.” .
