Stonegrot Week (2) Day 1: Dreamfasting

Stonegrot Week has returned! I have accepted my duty as one of the Maudras of Stonegrot art to contribute!

I spent so much time trying to get this right (I want to shade it too but it looks pretty nice with the flat colors)

I imagine their first dreamfast to be of them sharing their favorite childhood memories; Rian getting inspired to be just like his Father and become a soldier, and Deet finally helping her Fathers with Nurloc herding/caring. Of course their shared memory would be one of their conversations together, it’s hard to really tell but the one I used was their little talk at the Circle of the Suns when they just stare at each other until UrGoh calls for them lol

I hope you all enjoy my return to this wholesome and pure ship!

Title: Shared Memories

Prompt: Rian and Deet dreamfast together for the first time

“Is that you having a bath?” Deet giggled as they watched scenes from his childhood summers play before their eyes.

More of Rian’s memories flashed before them. He ran around Stone-in-the-Wood with friends, wooden swords in hand, playing soldier or pirates. He explored the Endless Forrest on his own little adventure, getting good and dirty along the way. He went camping with his father…

Unconsciously, he lowered his hand, breaking the dreamfast. He hadn’t meant to end it, but the dull ache in his heart demanded he stopped. He was not ready to see his father’s face, not yet, not if he didn’t need to.

Deet blinked her way back to the present. “What’s wrong?” she asked in that gentle way of hers that made him feel warm and safe.

“It’s my father,” he answered without hesitation. There was no need with Deet. He could trust her completely. Her mere presence comforted him, like a childling who truly believed their favorite blanket could keep the monsters away.

“You miss him,” she said softly, but matter-of-fact.

“I thought I was ready, but when I see him, all I can think about it the way he… That night… when the gobbles…” Rian dropped his face in his hands. The words were still too painful to say.

“Can I show you something?” Deet asked, her voice attracting him like a light in the dark.

He nodded and she took his hand. They entered the dream space once again. Before him, he saw a tiny Deet, flipping her wings in and out and giving them a lively flutter. Behind her, two adult gelfling, who he assumed were her fathers, dove to catch things she knocked off shelves as she played with her newly-discovered wings.

“When my wings came in,” she explained, “I loved testing them out and fluttering them, but I was afraid to fly. My fathers asked friend, family, and even Maudra Argot to teach me, but I wouldn’t go with any of them.”

He saw childling Deet cling to the legs of her fathers while a female gelfing tried to coax her to the edge of a cliff. Her fathers spoke soft, encouraging words to her and the lady promised she wouldn’t let Deet fall, but it was useless. The closer the lady came, the harder Deet clung to her fathers.

“I only wanted my fathers to teach me,” she went on. “Even though I knew they didn’t have wings, some part of me didn’t understand why they couldn’t. They were my fathers. I thought they could do anything.

“They tried everything they could think of to encourage me. I still have a whole collection of charms Papa Mitjan carved for me. They promised me that if I wore them while I was flying, it would be like they were right there with me.”

He saw little Deet accepting a heart-shaped pendant from one of her fathers. She thanked him, but from her crinkled face, he could tell she was unimpressed.

“You didn’t believe them?” Rian asked.

Deet laughed. “No, I knew a bit of wood wasn’t the same as having them with me. I’m not sure what finally pushed me to fly, but one day, during a lesson with my Aunt Cassidy, I did it.”

Finally, the vision showed him Deet taking to the air for the first time. She smiled and laughed as the wind rushed though her hair and the beat of her wings kept her aloft. Her fathers stood below, beaming up at her.

“I took off all by myself. I flew as high as I dared. And when I looked down, I saw them cheering me on. They looked so proud and I felt amazing.”

She drew her hand away and the vision dissolved. He saw her face, sweet and earnest. “Even though I knew my fathers couldn’t be with me, I knew they were rooting for me. They told me over and over that day how proud they were of me flying on my own, but they didn’t need to. I already knew, I could feel it, just like I know they’re proud of me now.” She reached below her collar and revealed she was wearing the very same heart-shaped pendant her father carved for her years ago. “And I think, that might be true for your father as well.”

Rian’s hand wandered to the hilt of his sword. That was a gift from his father as well. Not this sword in particular, he lost his own to the gobbles as well, but his skills, his courage, his drive to fight for what’s right; his father taught him all those things and more. “I think you’re right, Deet.” He offered her a smile. “How do you always know what to say?”

“I don’t really.” She blushed as turned away slightly. “I just think, ‘what would I want someone to say to me?’”

“Yes well,” he inched in closer to her, his hand brushing up against hers, “it turns out that’s just what I needed to hear.”

Hello friends, just a reminder that we will be reblogging any Stonegrot Week posts until October 3rd. We know creativity takes some time and we’re always excited for content.

the themes for Stonegrot Week (Year 3!) were:

September 20th — Day One: Kiss The Girl. Rian initiates a kiss with Deet. It could be their first kiss or their millionth, it’s up to you.

September 21st— Day Two: Afternoon Delight. Rian and Deet share a perfect afternoon together.

Stonegrot week Day 1: First kiss

Happy stonegrot week everyone!

I wanted to make sure I contributed something for the first day so I hope you all like it.

I wanted to make this first kiss drawing look more "sweet", like they had a long conversation and slowly began inching closer together (hopefully that makes some sense lol). I've read so many wonderful fanfics on archive of our own, written by wonderful writers on tumblr, that give the mood I'm trying to explain lol give those a read if you haven't yet; they're all really great and addicting~
