Dave’s either a Rich Kid with distant/unavailable parents and grew up with nannies and/or spent most of his adolescence in boarding schools—leading to his attachment issues and snarky, partially-self-aware offhand (dare I say at times rude) personality
or he has an overprotective single parent who only grows more overprotective at the knowledge of his shitty immune system, (and maybe he has siblings too), which led to his germaphobic & hypochondriac tendencies, his attachment issues (pretty sure he won’t have had many friends), and his snarky personality
there’s no in between

Parallel
Taylor refers to somebody (might be herself too) in coney island stating that they had "suburban dreams" ("The mischief, the gift wrapped suburban dreams") and I think this might be a direct reference to suburban legends. Which also leads me to connect the other dots. "I broke my own heart 'cause you were too polite to do it" (Suburban Legends) "If I pushed you to the edge But you were too polite to leave me" (Coney Island).
Taylor is not the only writer on Coney Island, but these are some parallels that can't be ignored.

Bonsoir Rae 🥐 anon here ! I've been so busy with work and lurking everything Taylor.
How are you? Is life has been good to you this november ?
I have a lyric question, can you tell me what do you think she means by suburban legends ? I understand urban legend but suburban ?? Is that the car? Or is that a saying i don't know ? That's several questions in fact 🫣 kiss from France
bonjour my bestie! life has been great over all - how are you???
so a suburb is a city outside of a larger city, usually it's a large residential neighborhood - good for families, it's got classic 'all-american'/american dream vibes. taylor grew up in one in pennsylvania and tennessee, which is why the suburb appears so much in her writing and process.
so urban legends are myths, folklore(!), but they're modern (like a city), derive from local history, and often gritty or scary.
a suburban legend is a modern myth as well, a story that people in their town will talk about for ages to come. it's simple, safe, innocent, and important - which we can infer, because taylor associates suburbs with small towns and her early years. think of how she described red as a run through a field behind a suburb, all the suburban imagery in folklore and evermore ("parked my car by the methodist and the school that used to be ours" and "we were like the mall before the internet... the gift-wrapped suburban dreams") and midnight (midnight rain, specifically.)
personally, it also kind of reminds me of that line in the louvre by lorde: "but we're the greatest, they'll hang us in the louvre, down the back, but who cares - still the louvre." like maybe it's not the greatest, most incredible, most well-known love story in the world, but they'll still be remembered.

Coney Island is the sequel to Suburban Legends and yes I will elaborate.
My main point is that the ‘clock’ connects the songs
- in suburban legends she sings “tick tock on the clock I pace down your block” and in Coney Island she sings “were you waiting at our old spot in the tree-line by the gold clock”
and my other points are
- in suburban legends she sings “waves crash to the shore, I dash to the door” and in Coney Island she sings “do you miss the rogue who coaxed you into paradise and left you there” [idk how to explain but ‘waves’ and ‘paradise’ connect ]
- in suburban legends she sings “you don’t knock anymore and my whole life’s ruined” and in Coney Island “were you standing in the hallway (with a big cake happy birthday) did i paint your bluest skies the darkest gray” [I also don’t know how to explain it but it makes sense you know??]
- also in Coney Island she sings “suburban dreams”
