Susan Jane Tanner Appreciation Post
Before rewatching the Cats 1998 stage film months ago, I had completely forgotten she was in that aforementioned musical, but already recognised her as Madame Thenardier in the OLC of Les Miserables. So naturally I was super excited when I was like “Wait, is that Susan Jane Tanner in the back there?” “I think--” *SJT starts singing Gus the Theater Cat* “Omg it IS her!”
Tumblr media
I also LOVE that it was Susan who also created the character of Jellylorum and so every time I see that character I think of how it was SJT who created that role. Love her!
Tumblr media
You know how you can “hear” a gif sometimes? Well I can “hear” her singing in this gif. Her voice is so distinct and sweet to listen to.
Tumblr media
Here she is as Jellylorum with Bomba and Demeter in Old Gumbie Cat, having the time of her life (as are the other two!)
Tumblr media
For some reason I also love the way she sings this line in Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats. I can “hear” this gif as well.

Ok, but can i just take a moment to talk about how amazing Susan Jane Tanner is? She was in the Original London Production of cats in 81 as Jellylorum then she was in the 98 film. She, along with Femi Taylor and Elaine Paige, was part of the OG cast that returned. I don't think she gets nearly enough recognition for that.

elder cats appreciation week: jellylorum
my beloved!!!! jelly!!!! love of my life!!!
here's a little confession for her day:
when i first got into cats, Jelly was my least favorite character. i'm honestly not sure why, but it took me quite a while to really fall in love with her. i think i started really liking her when i started making more hcs about Tumble's family, and i wanted to get to know Jelly on my own terms! after that, i fully fell in love with her as a character, and SLT's Jelly has really become one of my all-time favorite Jellys!!!

Back on my Fake Cyrano Musical bullshit for a minute--I've always thought it would be really fun to have a song with the members of Roxanne's household, including Ragueaneau and her Duenna, offering their outside perspective on the situation. They gossip about the letters Roxanne's been receiving, recite choice bits that they remember and offer commentary on them, and speculate on the kind of man Christian must be. Maybe Roxanne herself appears briefly with another letter to read, which sets the gossip train off again at full steam. You'd get to develop the relationships in the Robin household, both between the servants themselves and with Roxanne, and provide some levity before things get serious again.

bombalurina and jellylorum
Hello tine!!!! The Queen Marlene Danielle is the Bomba of my heart of course. She's the epitome of Bomba. Bomba concentrate. Tall and statuesque. Deeper voice. She is everything.

And then for Jelly I am once again going to be basic and say Susan Jane Tanner. But can u blame me? She's iconic

I'm sorry, people watched Susan Jane Tanner's performance in the 1998 film and didn't come away from it absolutely *loving* Jellylorum?? Where are they, I just wanna talk...
They're peppered everywhere - used to be way more prominent back in the day, so fortunately you won't see that as much anymore for the most part. But I remember. Little Jemi remembers. "She's too old, Jelly isn't supposed to be old and wrinkled, her face is so severe, her voice is annoying, she was so rough pulling Victoria away and she smiled when Gus was crying what a bitch!1", etc etc etc. More modern fans used "Karen" here and there, lmao (Like okay uh...where exactly). Even seasoned fans complained about her casting (and John Mills' casting too, but that's another point entirely) and her being too old and shrill for the part.
Fanfic writers had a field day with her - guess how many times she was framed as homophobic in old-school tuggoffelees fanfics? Guess how often she was just there to be sour and a naysayer and a frankly militant mom figure?
The goal I have for modern fandom is that we never fall back into this rigamarole ever again. I'm not saying you have to *like* SJT as Jelly, I'm not even saying you need to *like* Jelly herself, but I am saying you have to treat her with the same level of *basic respect* as anyone else in the cast, and stop allowing the bias against older women colour your opinion of an entire character.

Source: the Bay Area Reporter, 11 September 1986 So glad to learn that Les Miz was recognized early on for its gay rage.
MISERY LOVES COMPANY Although the plot to Rossini’s opera is little more than a piece of fluff, the musicalization of Les Miserables by Alan Boublil, Claude-Michel Schonberg, and Herbert Kretzmer has so much meat to it that one sits in awe of this show’s cumulative theatrical impact. While the socially downtrodden in Victor Hugo’s novel can muster any strength at all, their misery is accompanied by extreme anger and bitterness.
The Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of Les Miserables (adapted for the stage and directed by Trevor Nunn and John Caird) is, to my mind, the most powerfully concise piece of musical theater to emerge since Fiddler On the Roof. Although its score is not as lyrical as one might wish, the overall production details the course of history with stunning dramatic momentum. Andreane Neofitou’s period costumes and John Napier’s massive (yet extremely fluid) sets contribute to the show’s vast panoramic sweep.
Wonderfully touching performances came from Colm Wilkinson as the protagonist, Jean Valjean, Jackie Marks as the waif Famine, and Frances Ruffelle as Eponine. Alun Armstrong and Susan Jane Tanner were amorally entertaining as the Thenardiers (France’s answer to Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett). Michael Ball’s Marius and Rebecca Caine’s Cosette handled the romantic chores quite nicely, while Ian Tucker’s performance as the young street urchin, Gavroche, was remarkably strong for a child actor.
When one seeks superlatives to describe musical theater at its finest, let’s just say that Les Miserables is to Cats what Maria Callas is to Marie Osmond. As I left London’s Palace Theatre. I had that exhilarating feeling which comes from receiving a good swift kick in the ass to remind you just what you’ve been missing for far too long. The American premiere of Les Miserables is scheduled for December at Washington’s Kennedy Center prior to the show’s Broadway debut in February of 1987.
Given the current political climate in the United States, I would urge each and every one of B.A.R.’s readers to see this show as a means of getting in touch with his own sense of gay rage.

Jellylorum and Bustopher for the character asks?
Thank yooouuu!!!
Jellylorum
How I feel about this character
I love her! Don’t think about her that much, but I associate her with @lagomxrph which means only positive associations and so much love 🖤🖤🖤
All the people I ship romantically with this character
Jennyanydots. Lesbian aunts pls yes
My non-romantic OTP for this character
Jelly and Asparagus. I can see them as former mates who eventually split up and ended up becoming close friends
My unpopular opinion about this character
Not sure if it’s unpopular, but I love Susan Jane Tanner’s portrayal of her in the 1998 movie! It largely shaped my idea of her
One I thing I wish would happen/happened with this character in canon
More of her and Jenny together 🖤
Bustopher Jones
How I feel about this character
He amuses me! Fancy cat 🖤
All the people I ship romantically with this character
Jennyanydots, though I hc Bustopher as greyromantic. Jenny was in love with him, he did like her, but wasn’t really that invested in having an actual relationship
My non-romantic OTP for this character
Bustopherdots lmaoooo. But like fr, I would see then become good friends after Jenny finally moved on
My unpopular opinion about this character
I don’t think I have one. I hate his 2019 incarnation with a passion, but I think a lot of people do
One I thing I wish would happen/happened with this character in canon
It would have been fun to see him more than just his own song! See his background reactions, interactions with other cats, vibing to other songs, etc.
