Visiting Fulworth
Today @jeremys-come-to-bed-eyes and I went on something that I might have been classified as a "research trip" for The Beekeepers Picnic, if it had happened a few years ago! As it is, there's no hiding that it was just a geeky fan trip.
I didn't invent the idea of Holmes retiring to keep bees in a village called Fulworth - it gets alluded to a few times in the stories, and there is one story set there, 'The Lion's Mane'.
We know Holmes' retirement home is either a 'cottage' or a 'villa', it's a few miles out of Eastbourne, and it's clearly somewhere where it's possible to walk to the sea for a swim. Sherlockian tradition is that the real-life place fitting this description is the village of East Dean.
So, that's where we went - walking from Eastbourne.
This area is famous for it's white chalk cliffs, which are eroding away very quickly. Here is a path to nowhere!
Tumblr media
These cliffs are known as the Seven Sisters. They all have names but the only two I remember are Short Bottom and Rough Bottom.
Tumblr media
The beach there is all pebbles - I knew that when creating my game, but I felt like a pebble beach just wouldn't look right all in pixels, so I made it sandy instead.
Tumblr media
East Dean is absolutely gorgeous, basically everything I could have hoped for.
Tumblr media
Here is the village green - flying a Ukrainian flag in solidarity!
Tumblr media
And here is Mr Holmes' official cottage. As far as we could tell its now an office of the local estate rather than someone's house, so we didn't feel too weird taking lots of pictures! The Lions Mane implies his cottage is a little way out of the village, but I'll forgive them for putting it in the centre instead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I think that the dates are obviously the dates he lived there as recorded by his biographer - our last information on Holmes is from 1917. I think they made the right call not to try to invent a date for his death.)
A lot of the cottages in the area have this really distinctive mixture of pebbles and brick which I think must be a hallmark of the local area, but I was pleased to see a few whitewashed buildings like the ones I put in the game:
Tumblr media
Thank you for reading, please enjoy this adorable foal.

Hello humans!! Another little story tumblr inspired me to write, Lestrade reading CHAS and well... REACTING.
He deserves to shout Holmes' ears off a bit, come on! I'm taking most of the framework of the case from the acd story more than from the Granada movie, because in the movie Holmes and OTHER EXCELLENT REASONS for not wanting to help Lestrade (heloooo period-typical homophobiaaaa, is that you?)
Talking of it, i included together with the usual heap of fluff and old married couple-ness also them coming out to Lestrade, i have had this headcanon about them actually doing it for a while, i simply like it and find that it makes sense.
I thank whoever made the post which inspired me (@dathen? it was you? or @skyriderwednesday?) and @fruitviking and @skyriderwednesday for having helped me with how to put together Lestrade's character. I also thank my beautiful, fantastic, incredible beta and GF, my beloved @mostvaliantandmostpround for having betaed this <3
Put Jeremy's and Edward's faces on Holmes and Watson and you never get them wrong if it's anything i'm scribbling, also my lestrade is Colin Jeavons' Lestrade because he's perfect and really a good ferret (affictionated). Hope you enjoy this, constructive criticism is most welcome!

From the Flowers (8588 words) by Anonymous Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: Sherlock Holmes & Related Fandoms, Sherlock Holmes - Arthur Conan Doyle Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson Characters: Sherlock Holmes, John Watson Additional Tags: Sussex, Friends to Lovers, Love Confessions, First Time, Trans Sherlock Holmes, Demisexual Sherlock Holmes, Hurt/Comfort, and of course romance, and some considerations of the goodness of the flowers Summary:
“Through the window that overlooks the modest lawn of our farm-house, I can see Sherlock Holmes strolling among his beehives. His hair is quite white, but his long, thin form is as wiry and energetic as ever, and there is a touch of healthy colour in his cheeks, placed there by Mother Nature and her clover-laden breezes that carry the scent of the sea amid these gentle Sussex Downs. Our lives are drawing towards eventide.”
— “The Adventure of the Red Widow”, Adrian Conan Doyle
April 1903: a year after Garridebs, another case nearly goes wrong. Watson asks for Holmes' trust, and Holmes gives it, starting them on the path toward Sussex.

Wow, this year’s Holmestice exchange is off to an incredible start with this deeply tender and lovely piece. Can’t recommend it enough! Rich with historical detail, vivid in its joyful domesticity, elegant in its prose, generous in its philosophy, and true in its character voices. <3333

I'm sorry to share, but this must be documented.
Rachel Meghan Markle is truly the spawn of satan. She's a wicked creature who seeks to kill, steal & destroy her victims when they are most vulnerable.
Something bad must be on the horizon for The Meghans. First they wheel out Markus Anderson, and now their most desperate move is to publicly resurrect the fake affair rumors started by MEgain 5 years ago. She wanted to cover up her partaying at Soho House Amsterdam (fake preggers), while simultaneously blackmailing the BRF into "supporting her in the press."
Epstein Island's Stephen Colbert has confirmed (again) that the cabal owns him. He was obviously "forced" to publicly suggest that "Kate Middleton is missing" bc William & Catherine are having marital problems. There was no "joke," just a lie.
Harry if you are reading this: what an absolute disgrace you have become. A traitor to your mother, father, brother & country.
First we watched Colbert push the Spare Us book of lies, including the "Wills beat me up & broke my necklace lie." Now Sparry has inspired the suckit sewer megbots to attack 2 innocent families. Colbert used Omit's fake headlines from Yahoo News to "confirm" the affair. What a miserable black soul Stephen Colbert embodies. Just another weak compromised puppet for the elites.
Tumblr media
Megbots have such low IQs. They steal the art designed to portray their mistress and desperately try to make it fit Catherine🤡🤦‍♂️
Tumblr media
Michael Cole won't shut up. He continues to manufacture ridiculous content using Catherine's name just to stir up the megbots. It's in the GB News comments that we see Meghan desperate to get the talking heads to mention the "rumored affair."
From the Sussex Sewer
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The people are fed up with Michael Cole, Piers & every other media bully
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
GB News attempting to pivot from "Kate" by bringing on Dr Carole Lieberman. Too late.

Chapter Two: The Inciting Incident
Summary: Sherlock takes on a new hobby: writing a story. If only something would happen! Takes place a year after the ending of Wooing Sherlock Holmes. He and John have been married for a year, still retired, living in Sussex.
Chapter 2 Summary: While Greg stays in the hospital for tests, John and Sherlock receive a most curious case.
"In a small village, people do not care about health care privacy. If you are visiting your doctor for an embarrassing condition and mention it to just one person, everyone will soon be talking about you, though never to your face. I know all my neighbours deepest medical secrets, and if someone dies, we all know what the official cause was within twenty-four hours. I look forward to the day when no one knows why someone died, because then it will most likely be murder, and I will solve it."

Day 5; 'Bees and Honey
@flufftober
1920s Sussex Downs
How fickle and fleeting the world is, the thought passes through my mind one dozing summer evening as I sit out in the garden enjoying the long stretch of warm light.
My eyes rest on the tall figure, cowed now over his white ships of bee-houses. That the finest mind of London, help (and occasional frustration) of Scotland Yard, Hero of the thrilling papers, could slip into the quietness of Sussex life with hardly a ripple of interest from the wider world. To those who were nearby we are simply Mr 'olmes - as the accent places it - and I a retired medical man. No one of any consequence, really.
"Whither your Musing, my dear Watson?" My beloveds voice says, his long hand coming to settle fingertips on the arm of my chair.
"The waves and shifts of time and memory Holmes." I wave my hand lightly at the soft green garden, the just visible edge of a vegetable patch, a thick hedge at a bottom end "That we, after everything, may just be here and nothing comes rattling to our door. As if the great string of cases never was."
"Another era was it not Watson?" Holmes nods a little "We're from Before, before that terrible war which divides time like a deep river." His eyes glint with their old sharpness, "But you still have cases, John."
"Only in situation extremis, Holmes, as you well know." When Johnny Hodge fell out of the tree and fractured his arm so badly, then someone had run to the front gate yelling for me 'Old Doctor Watson', and I had been glad to splint it until they could get the poor boy to a proper hospital.
Holmes touches my arm again with light fingertips, I cover it with my own.
"Will you play tonight?" I ask soft on the air.
"Of course, Watson," His eyes are lit warm by the drooping sun "I rather fancy that new one by Vaughan-Williams."
(A/N By which I mean 'The Lark Ascending' )

ACD: So Sherlock Holmes retired to live a solitary life in Sussex. Watson is doing god knows what and married to who knows whom and they've mostly fallen out of each other's lives.
Adrian Conan Doyle: Father, I respect you so much but FUCK that.

Look I just think its really nice that at the end of it all Holmes and Watson get to go and retire in a little cottage in Sussex and keep bees and read the paper and be happy. The last we see of them is alive and well and contentedly sharing each others company and I think that's lovely.

Dan Wootton
(The video and the substack article have the same information and graphics/visuals.)
Harry has several anonymous accounts on Twitter and other social media (that he reportedly hates) to monitor how he and Meghan are being covered and talked about.
The Sussexes are fully aware of what Sussex Squad does and directly feed into it. Scobie and Bouzy are in direct contact with the Sussexes. Bouzy and Meghan's PR teams are also in direct contact with many of the Sussex Squad accounts/users. Byline Times is one of Harry's partners.
Sussex Squad has been targeting Wootton since he published Megxit. Wootton's sources include people close to Harry and people close to Sussex Squad.
Sussex Squad created KateGate and began certain rumors about William. Wootton was able to identify the account responsible for starting #WhereisKate and alleging her disappearance is because of William's temper.
Bouzy is most likely the individual responsible for Getty's flagging of KP's pictures and Kate's video statement as being edited and inauthentic.
Wootton hints that Sussex Squad somehow found out about Kate's cancer diagnosis and/or their coordinated attacks on KP (probably via the KateGate hysteria) forced Kate to announce her cancer and treatment plan before she was ready and before she had fully come to grips with it.
Sussex Squad has been spooked off Twitter and now use Discord for their collaboration.
Wootton also identifies and discusses 3 Sussex trolls:
Troll 1 is a techy in NYC who is a close Bouzy collaborator. She is one of the main accounts that have harrassed and targeted Wootton and his partner because of Wootton's critical coverage of the Sussexes. She has publicly admitted to it. She is no longer trolling because it's toxic and allegedly has quit Twitter, though not before claiming that Wootton and his people were threatening to hurt her and her dog.
Troll 2 is a business dude in Tampa. He specifically targets Camilla and has claimed that she is Meghan's main bully and has enlisted Jeremy Clarkson and Piers Morgan in her bullying campaign. He also tries to keep connecting Charles to Germany, and specifically to N*zi Germany.
Troll 3 is a British advertising executive. This individual has alleged that Camilla is responsible for Charles's cancer, because she has been poisoning him since the coronation so she can retire "young."
One of Wootton's bigger points is that if the Sussexes want to be taken seriously as advocates for internet reform/social media protections, then they must publicly disassociate from and condemn Sussex Squad's behavior and activities. He doesn't think they will.
*****************
First, I'm pleasantly surprised by this. I was expecting Wootton to be a little more sensational about his discoveries, but it's clear he's really done his homework and has really spent some time investigating this. If you're into this kind of thing, you might actually enjoy getting his updates so why not sign up for it. Use a burner email, though. You can never be too safe.
Second, I'm not really sure about using Wootton's reporting to validate some of the rumors and theories I'm tracking. On the one hand, Wootton has legit sources and a track record that makes him one of the more reliable reporters. But on the other hand, I like double-confirmation for my verification so I can be sure that it's the absolute truth.
What do y'all think?

You might have seen the absolutely GORGEOUS cover artwork by @gooolabatooo for my in development game the Beekeeper's Picnic! I'm in love with it but Steam/Kickstarter/Itch tend to want teeny tiny images, so here are some close ups of happily retired Holmes and Watson and their faithful hound.

MUTUAL PINING FIC RECS: Below you'll find a list of Good Omens fics in which Aziraphale and Crowley are pining for each other.
You can request more fic recs here.
you play with my feelings (right from the start) by PenroseSun (G, 3k)
There were three things of which Crowley was absolutely certain: 1. Aziraphale, being an angel, was required to be kind and loving towards all things, even when those things were flawed or sinful or fallen. 2. Notwithstanding that obligatory kindness, Aziraphale would never, and could never truly love a demon, in any meaningful sense. 3. Despite this, Crowley was desperately, hopelessly, in love with him.
For To Quench My Thirst by apliddell (G, 6k)
After moving to Sussex with Aziraphale, Crowley is trying so hard to be satisfied with friendship and the suddenly beautiful life he already has.
Slow by write_away (T, 9k)
It started like this: A boy with the ability to warp reality met an angel and a demon and he made assumptions. You might say it started like this: An angel and a demon found a marriage contract hung on the wall of the angel's bookshop. They didn't question it. It also could have started like this: Once upon a time, the angel told the demon he went too fast. The demon took it to heart.   Aziraphale and Crowley find themselves somehow married. Crowley fears going too fast. Aziraphale forges ahead. Neither know how to ask questions of each other.
got a pretty face, pretty boyfriend too by KissMyAsthma, leukozyna (T, 9k)
Aziraphale and Crowley are next-door neighbours. They’ve been attracted to each other since they met. The only thing keeping them apart is a thin wall between their bedrooms and Atticus and Freddie, Aziraphale’s and Crowley’s respective life partners… or are they? A human AU glued together by misunderstandings and wet food.
speed limits (and how to break them) by darcylindbergh (E, 13k)
There is a trick people do with a mint candy and a bottle of cola which results in a small eruption, and something very like it, for much higher stakes than a laugh in a car park, is about to take place in Aziraphale’s back room. Or: what happens when you finally unscrew the cap on a six thousand years of repression, and drop in Valentine’s Day.
Something We Were Withholding Made Us Weak by triedunture (M, 17k)
"Yes, exactly. Retire." Aziraphale reaches for the last remaining tartlet brimming with summer berries. "Somewhere along the south coast, perhaps." Or: Crowley and Aziraphale learn to move in tandem.
32 Questions That Lead To Love by ffonippop (E, 32k)
”First formulated in 1997, [32] questions to fall in love is a study by psychologist Dr. Arthur Aron which took place at Stony Brook University, New York. The aim? Speeding up the creation of intimacy between two strangers.” The Cosmopolitan Okay, fine. Crowley was 32-Questions-That-Lead-To-Love-ing Aziraphale. Sue him. He had no expectations, all right? Just, an innocent curiosity.
Flowers From The Grave Of Our Friendship by WaitingToBeBroken (E, 50k)
Crowley is very good at temptation, not so good with what comes afterwards. Aziraphale knows demons don't love so he is happy to take anything Crowley would give him. Both of them are too blind to realize the thing they want is right in front of them.
Fledging by FeralTuxedo (M, 53k)
Cool Dad was at the school gate again. Clambering out of his ridiculous sports car like a great big spider, all black denim and designer sunglasses. What a prat. He made his way towards the entrance, followed by his equally lanky son. All the mums' eyes were on him. Which was fine. At least they weren't staring at Aziraphale for a change. Cool Dad high-fived his son goodbye, because of course he did, then sauntered back to his car. Making it look so bloody easy. Aziraphale Fell is much too young to be looking after eleven-year old Pepper. He barely has his life together as it is, with his minimum-wage job and a half-baked dream of trading rare books for a living. And as if adopting a recently bereaved pre-teen isn’t enough, there are some rather more adult problems to navigate: playground politics, the shadows of his own childhood, and the growing question of how Crowley, the only other dad at the school gate, feels about him. A human AU/kid fic.
Style and Substance by Cabernet_Woebegone (E, 89k)
“But y’know, if my boss finds out I’m helping you even a little, they’re gonna throw me out on my ass.” “Yes, I understand it is a bit of a conflict of interest for you… Is there something I can offer you in return? Something you would like?” Aziraphale questioned hopefully. You, Crowley thought loudly as he took a second sip. I want to know if you moan when you kiss the same way you do when you try something delicious. I want to know if your lips taste like Zinfandel. “Yes, actually.” Aziraphale is having difficulty running his restaurant, and it isn't helping that he believes the place across the street is trying to sabotage him. To his surprise, chef Crowley comes to him on friendly terms. Together they come up with an arrangement that could benefit them both.
On Espionage and Prophecy (or How to Accidentally, but Wholly, Fall in Love With a Soho Bookseller) by RockSaltAndRoll (E, 133k)
1941 is the London Blitz and the year that MI5 really comes into its own with the now infamous ‘double cross’ system. The service keep tabs on suspects, root out enemy agents and try to turn them into doubles. Anthony J Crowley is fucking great at this job. He can be sneaky, underhanded and damn ruthless but also charming and kind. It’s what makes him good at turning. Aziraphale is just a regular Soho bookseller who loves his shop and books and good food and wine when he’s approached by a woman claiming to be MI5, wanting to recruit him for espionage. The poor man is too trusting and gets the shock of his life when he’s approached by a charming but dangerous-looking man also claiming to be MI5. Crowley recruits Aziraphale to double cross a double crosser and Aziraphale takes to espionage like a duck to water. Danger, hijinks, and sex ensue.
Old Vines by sevdrag (E, 189k)
A.Z. Fell, one of the most respected names in wine and food blogging, has been sent on assignment with his assistant Warlock Dowling to spend six months in California Wine Country. Under direction (by his boss, Gabriel) to use this experience to double his blog followers and write a novel, Aziraphale is both excited and anxious about the opportunity. Anthony J. Crowley is the owner and viticulturalist of Ecdyses, a winery that unexpectedly fell into his lap eleven years ago when he hit rock bottom. He may be in debt, yeah, but he’s paying off his loans — and despite pressure from his lenders and their team of inspectors, Crowley has found a kind of contentment tending his little corner of terroir and producing extraordinary wine. Crowley’s old vines are the heart of his vineyard, and he’s never let anyone in. Crowley finds Aziraphale intriguing; Aziraphale finds Crowley enthralling. Turns out a famous wine expert and an experienced viticulturalist can still learn things from each other. The summer of 2019 unfolds.

Johnlock fics I read in 2023
This is everything I read in the Sherlock Holmes fandom last year that made it into my bookmarks. So while I may not have read enough to make a selected "best of" list, consider these the ones that made it past all my internal selection criteria and are deserving of a spotlight. A few of these were completed prior to 2023.
A Case of You by Silvergirl (17K, M, Johnlock, Sherlock/OMC) Sherlock is marrying an American, and at the rehearsal dinner, best man John makes a drunken love confession he doesn’t remember the next day. Badly hungover, John can't find anyone to tell him what the hell happened to the wedding, where the grooms are, or how he can put it right so that Sherlock can be happy. But what if he's dead wrong about what will make Sherlock happy?
A Midnight Clear by khorazir (16K, T, Johnlock) It’s Christmas Eve, and Sherlock is working. Because that’s what he does. He doesn’t need Christmas, or holiday cheer, or even company. He’s fine on his own, thank you very much – until a series of strange encounters on his way back to Baker Street makes him reconsider.
A Story That Is Almost, But Not Quite, Entirely Unlike Blue Carbuncle by Iwantthatcoat (16K, M, Johnlock) It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and the Holmes Family is all set to have one of those unimaginable Christmas dinners— but the game is afoot, as Mummy’s friend is caught up in a Christmas mystery.
An Elegant Solution by ArwaMachine (19K, E, Johnlock) Sherlock finds himself unspeakably aroused by the idea of John with another man. Problem is, the only man Sherlock will permit be with John is Sherlock himself. Seems like an unsolvable problem. ... or is it?
An Ocean Away by westernredcedar (14K, T, Johnlock) Sherlock Holmes has been gone for twenty long years, time enough for John Watson's daughter to make it all the way to Harvard University.
Avast Ye Merry Gentlemen by StellaCartography (10K, E, Johnlock) Sherlock is not a Christmas person. John decides it's Christmas that needs changing.
Bright Blue Ink by 13_33 (13K, G, Johnlock, Warstan) When one of my patients asks me about my relationship with Sherlock Holmes, the great detective, I answer this: I am his chronicler, his assistant in solving crimes, his confidant and friend. Of course, all these terms hold true, now as then, at the beginning of our shared history. But just as in a family portrait you can only see the put-on smiles and never the real faces of the people, they were only part of what made up my true relationship with Holmes. I know him, I then add; I know him well. [ACD]
Deductive Reasoning by cormorant (8K, T, Johnlock) John finds out that Sherlock has assumed for a while that their relationship was romantic, and feels like maybe he should have been notified about that.
Doting Husbands by Calais_Reno (16K, M, Johnlock) Sherlock takes on a new hobby: writing a story. If only something would happen! Takes place a year after the ending of Wooing Sherlock Holmes. He and John have been married for a year, still retired, living in Sussex.
Full Mount by ArwaMachine (54K, E, Johnlock) After Sherlock unceremoniously returns from the dead, John finds himself inexplicably angry all the time. So he does what any emotionally-constipated British man does: he joins a Mixed Martial Arts gym. As John throws himself into the sport and joins in on underground no-holds-barred brawls, situations arise that just might force John to face what is really going on underneath all the rage.
Indefinite Lines by ArwaMachine (298K, E, Johnlock) When two lines, inclined towards each other, are extended indefinitely, it is inevitable that they meet. Upon meeting, the lines become something new. Together. Perhaps it’s been like that from the beginning for Sherlock and John—their lives weaving together, inclined towards one another, moving closer and closer to something greater than themselves.
Live from the Morgue by disfictional (8K, E, Johnlock) Molly interviews Sherlock on her podcast, Live from the Morgue. John listens.
Lost In A Good Book by khorazir (68K, M, Johnlock) After chasing a criminal into a poky second-hand bookshop, John and Sherlock find themselves not only stuck in the building, but in L-space itself. With things still raw and unsettled between them after the events surrounding the Culverton Smith case, this adds another dimension to their predicament, which not only consists of finding a way out of the shop (while avoiding getting murdered by the criminal), but also to finally address the issues between them.
Nightjet by khorazir (22K, M, Johnlock) Officially deceased for eighteen months and still looking for the last remainders of Moriarty’s criminal empire, an exhausted Sherlock boards a night train in Germany to bring him to his next hunting ground. Due to a mishap with the sleeper cars, he is forced to share a compartment with a stranger – who turns out to be not quite as strange as Sherlock thought. The universe isn’t lazy, after all …
Nothing to Celebrate by DiscordantWords (30K, M, Johnlock, Warstan) Sherlock Holmes is back from the dead. Things only get worse from there.
Our Ghosts And This by LipstickDaddy (12K, T, Johnlock) An epilogue in three acts.
Primavera by Berty (9K, T, Johnlock) Italy in the springtime is as romantic as it gets but is it enough to free unspoken words and feelings after years of silence?
Salut d'Amour by ecoutes (11K, G, Johnlock) Despite Holmes claiming that my narrations of our cases were tainted with sentimentality, his preferences in music, I learned, were awfully romantic. [ACD]
Spare Parts by Raina_at (63K, E, Johnlock) Two years ago, Sherlock Holmes jumped off the roof of New London Hospital. Two months ago, he walked into John's clinic as if no time had passed at all. John hasn't seen him since. But then Sherlock knocks on John's door with a case he can't say no to, and while figuring out why the biggest manufacturer or synthetic limbs in the System is going after veterans, they also need to find out whether there's a way to fix what's broken between them.
stirringofbirds between my arms by NotusLethe (18K, E, Johnlock, Enola/Tewksbury) Over the years, John Watson gets to know his new flatmate, Sherlock Holmes, and the man's clever ward. [Enola Holmes]
Stretch by illwick (13K, E, Johnlock) Sometimes the lines get blurry. [Part 35 of a BDSM established relationship series]
The Adventure of The Reluctant Docent by mydogwatson (23K, T, Johnlock) Someone is killing the docents of London. Sherlock is on the case when he meets a very interesting docent.
The Case of the Freudian Dick Pic Slip by expoduck (11K, E, Johnlock) John accidentally sends Sherlock a dick pic he'd intended for another man.
The Mystery of the Missing Metallurgist by rudbeckia (14K, M, Johnlock) A young wife engages Holmes to find her missing husband. Lestrade thinks the man has absconded to America, but Holmes rises to the challenge of Proving Lestrade Wrong. The case turns out to be far more complex and dangerous than they first thought, and Holmes sends Watson to secure Lestrade’s help in bringing a criminal gang to justice. When Holmes gets injured, Watson realises where his heart lies and a little lighthearted banter leads to a tentative confession. [ACD]
The Silence Between the Notes by J_Baillier (44K, M, Johnlock, Viclock) Lieutenant John Watson's days in London are painted in shades of grey after losing both his military career and his family. Could an unexpected request to travel to Vienna to track down the errant son of a wealthy family break the monotony?
The Wizard of Baker Street by Calais_Reno (23K, T, Johnlock) In which Sherlock is a wizard under a curse and John spends a lot of time as a cat.
‘tis the damn season by chrysanthemumsies (22K, E, Johnlock) Sherlock and John travel to Edinburgh to catch a homophobic serial killer in time for Christmas. They figure out how to use their words, more or less.
Trapezoid by SilentAuror (27K, E, Johnlock, OMC/ OMC) Corey Graham invites John and Sherlock to visit L.A. to consult on a project… at least, officially.
Yorkshire by lurikko (8K, E, Johnlock) They're in Yorkshire, in a house in the moors, for a case, only Sherlock keeps touching John. [Omegaverse]

Imo, I think Watson would start to feel a bit guilty about basically making his living off Holmes after a while, especially as Holmes starts to consider retirement.
That's why I headcanon that rather than 'abandoning Holmes for a wife' in late 1902/early 1903, he decides to quit being Holmes's full-time biographer and go back into medical practice. They have a bit of a spat over this, since for a variety of reasons (not least Watson being embarrassed and English about his feelings regarding the matter-- a difficult feat for a Scotsman) they didn't discuss it before hand, and Holmes is still salty enough about it to be rude while writing Blanched Soldier. He didn't take any of Watson's attempted justifications well, and was particularly offended at the 'what if something happened to you?' argument -- Watson should know that if anything were to happen to him, then he's made all the necessary arrangements to make sure that Watson is provided for.
(This is appreciated, but Watson is still Victorian enough to be embarrassed about being all but explicitly treated like Holmes's spouse in something as serious as his Last Will and Testament) (He won't completely come round to this for a couple more decades yet)
So their relationship is more than a little rocky following that point, and they take a little while to recover from it (mostly on Holmes's side, Watson has never been one for holding grudges). Watson splits his time between Baker St and living at his surgery, though he can't spend too long away without worrying Mrs Hudson.
They make up before the year is out, but it does delay Watson following Holmes to Sussex for a little while.
It all works out in the end though.
