Beside the drift of paperwork was a book. Vimes twisted painfully and looked at the spine. It said: Diseases of the Dragon, by Sybil Deidre Olgivanna Ramkin. He turned the stiff pages in horrified fascination. They opened into another world, a world of quite stupefying problems. Slab Throat. The Black Tups. Dry Lung. Storge. Staggers, Heaves, Weeps, Stones. It was amazing, he decided after reading a few pages, that a swamp dragon ever survived to see a second sunrise. Even walking across a room must be reckoned a biological triumph. The painstakingly-drawn illustrations he looked away from hurriedly. You could only take so much innards.

ok i already said that i miss sybil but i need to talk about it more. lady sybil is such an amazing character in guards! guards!. we get to see all these interesting parts of her: her passion for dragon rearing, her lovable mix of stern authority and a kind heart, the dissonance between her immense wealth and her hatred of having to parcitipate in pageantry, her take-no-shit attitude, the dynamics that develop between her and each watchman (the way she is somehow the only person in ankh-morprok who can't tell that nobby is a disgusting little freak is still funny to me), not to mention the very endearing meet-cute and schoolgirl crush she has on vimes. she's a fully realized and fleshed out character and i loved her and wanted more of her (i also Want Her. ahem hem). i could read about her doing literally anything shes just so awesome.

and then she is instantly and utterly sidelined. men at arms skips any kind of detail or development in sybil and vimes' relationship. they went directly from will-they-wont-they (they dont even end up as an official couple by the end of gg) to engagement as if it's a matter of course. and then she's practically absent from the whole book. she has like, 2 or 3 lines of dialogue and they're all to nag her husband. he pretty much leaves her at the altar cause hes too busy Dealing With The Plot to show up to his own wedding. and she is COMPLETELY absent from feet of clay. vimes mentions her by name a couple of times lest we forget she even exists, but they dont even have a single conversation together.

its heartbreaking to me. dgmw i still VERY MUCH enjoy these books but im just so disappointed thinking about how much i would have loved to see sybil play a role in them. her ladyship sybil deidre olgivanna ramkin i love you 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔

This part gives me warm fuzzies every time.

Although Sybil's wig didn't quite turn out the way I wanted it to look, stacking a sundae of curls, braids, beads and ringlets together turned out to be funner than I thought. I also don't really care if Vimes is actually short or average height, as long as Sybil towers over him. Glittering siege machine indeed.

6. Samuel Vimes (again) and Lady Sybil Vimes, Née Ramkin (again, I just really love them okay?)

(I won't quote the fifth elephant on this, for fear of spoiling it)

I set a goal, and... suddenly it's after Christmas, and I'm some 23 drawings behind (sobs). But I do have schoolwork to deal with for now :(

I dabble a little in pixel art, the type where you bend over MS paint swearing :3c I'm getting asesprite once I can afford it!

I know that this Sybil doesn't positively tower over Vimes, but that's because I limited myself to a strict 16 x 32 pixels rectangle, black outline not included. I had to ban myself from sticking another elaborate wig on her head, and her hands are folded nicely up front because there was no space for her to move them around :(. I had difficulties deciding if the bit on her apron was supposed to be a shadow, a burn mark or the mortal remains of an exploded swamp dragon.In retrospect the background looks a little messy, but I have the original sprites to play with, whenever I liked!

It's good to give yourself limits as a beginner to stop things from getting too complicated, so I used grayscale (at the risk of making it look like a funeral picture), fully intending to convert it into signature Gameboy green later! But it turns out I used 6 shades (including black) and there are only 4 shades in Gameboy... never mind.
