“T’nalak Community: Tboli Origin: South Cotabato The traditional textile woven by the Tboli women, t’nalak represents birth, life, union in marriage and death, and shows the uniqueness and identity of the indigenous group. It is often utilised as blankets and clothing and used in royal wedding ceremonies on rare occasions. The Tboli weavers are often called “dream weavers” but this applies only to a few dedicated weavers. It is believed that the designs and patterns are bestowed on them by Fu Dalu, the spirit of abaca, through their dreams. The tedious creation of the t’nalak starts with extracting the abaca fibres, which are then combed to remove the sap. They are connected from end to end and knotted and prepared for a design prior to resist-dyeing, known as the ikat method. A t’nalak traditionally has three colours: black, red, and white. The fibres are then woven using the backstrap loom. The textile is then washed in the river, beaten with a wooden stick to flatten the knots, and burnishing the surface with a cowrie shell. The late Lang Dulay was widely regarded as one of the best weavers and was bestowed the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan in 1998. Pictured here is one of her creations.”

The Cultural Mosaic of South Cotabato in my Identity
My birthplace, Koronadal, South Cotabato, stands for me as a colorful fusion of cultures and values. Our society is a mix of T'bolis, B'laans, Ilonggos, Bisayas, and Tagalogs, like a simmering pot of diversity. We weave our stories and traditions together to create an exquisite weaving of heritage, synthesizing a kaleidoscope of traditions.
The T'boli people have a unique place of regard within a mosaic of cultures. They create the precious cloth known as T'nalak while secluded away on the captivating waters of Lake Sebu. This sacred fabric pays honor to the T'boli dream weavers by incorporating dreams into each of its individual strands. As dream weavers and creators of our own destinies, we too represent the spirit of our South Cotabateña roots when we wear the T'nalak.
Our culture is woven with dreams, which motivates us to pursue our ambitions with perseverance. Our spirits are woven with courage and determination, never hesitating to embark on the tough path leading to our goals. Every South Cotabateña embraces this ferocious ambition to create their own stories as a defining characteristic that has been passed down through the years.
A dormant stratovolcano known as Mt. Parker in Lake Holon lies beautifully amongst the artwork of dreams. Lake Holon which is home to quiet waters, represents the spirit of our individuals as well as our unwavering dedication to planet sustainability care. Its calm depths serve as a cultural symbol and are a testament to our constant commitment to protection and conservation. Given that we are innate caregivers who nurture and maintain the delicate balance of the environment around us, responsibility is built in our DNA.
I am proud to be a South Cotabateña, dressed in the colors of our culture. Every element of our culture, from the pulsating sounds of folk dances to the alluring tastes of regional food, tells a tale of resiliency, harmony, and compassion. I am a living example of the myriad cultures that coexist within me and represent the cultural diversity of South Cotabato. We, dreamers, rise in this land of aspirations and accountability as stewards of the planet and master weavers of our own destinies. Together, we create a colorful picture that pays homage to the past, changes the present, and creates a complex web of optimism regarding the future.

T'nalak weaving in a nutshell
T’nalak has a distinctive tri-colour scheme
White for the pattern, red for relief elements, and black (or deep brown) for the background.
Process: Kedungon
Fibers used in weaving are harvested from the abaca tree and prepared in a process known as kedungon. Two metal blades are used to quickly remove the pulp and reveal the filaments, which are worked by hand into fine threads.
Process: Tembong
During tembong, an artisan will connect individual threads end to end. Temogo, or dyeing, is done in the ikat-style, using beeswax and natural pigments. Fibres are first boiled in a black dye for several weeks. Weaving (mewel) is done on a backstrap loom (legogong) and weaving one piece of cloth can take up to a month of uninterrupted work.
Final Stage: Semaki
Semaki involves burnishing the fabric with a cowrie shell that is heated by friction. Nut oil is used to condition the fabric and add sheen.

South Cotabato: The Land of Dreamweavers
In the heart of Mindanao, Philippines, lies the enchanting province of South Cotabato, a place where nature's beauty and cultural richness seamlessly blend. As I ventured into this hidden gem, I found myself captivated by the diverse landscapes and warm hospitality that define this region.
Tumblr media
My journey began in the provincial capital, Koronadal City, a bustling hub surrounded by verdant fields and rolling hills. The vibrant T'nalak Festival, a celebration of the indigenous T'boli culture, welcomed me with a riot of colors, traditional dances, and the rhythmic beat of drums. It was a sensory immersion into the unique heritage that South Cotabato proudly preserves.
Heading south, the serene Lake Sebu unveiled itself, cradled by misty mountains and lush forests. Wooden longhouses on stilts dotted the lakeshore, offering a glimpse into the traditional T'boli way of life. A serene boat ride across the lake allowed me to absorb the tranquility and witness the harmonious coexistence of nature and culture.
Tumblr media
The mesmerizing Seven Falls, a cascade of waterfalls hidden within the embrace of nature, beckoned me further. As I hiked along well-worn trails, the thunderous roar of falls echoed, creating a symphony of nature's grandeur. Each waterfall presented a unique spectacle, from the ethereal curtain-like curtains of Hikong Alu to the powerful rush of Hikong Bente.
Tumblr media
South Cotabato's agricultural landscapes, adorned with endless fields of pineapple and banana plantations, added a touch of greenery to the journey. The scent of ripe fruits lingered in the air, creating a delightful aroma that accompanied me along the winding roads.
As I concluded my travelogue through South Cotabato, I carried with me not just the photographs of picturesque landscapes but the indelible memories of a place where nature, culture, and warm smiles converge. This hidden paradise, with its untold stories and rich heritage, invites every traveler to explore its wonders, leaving an imprint that transcends time.

July 29, 2023
Hello.
So gusto nako magtype diria pero kay dili pa man ko sure sa akoang gusto i-rant about, naisipan nako na i-reread ang entry ko from a year ago. July 28, 2022. So from that entry I was this bitter girl in her LOA still trying to work on her INCs and her scholarship requirements. She hides in her bedroom because the presence of her family members suffocates her.
Now, I am still bitter but lesser, I think. The suffocation is still the same though. The remaining bitterness are justified now too. It's now more clear to me why I am so upset. I also have more experience in the world. For the rest of the year especially towards the end, I was able to expose myself to neighbours and even worked with them. Got my first salary hehe. It was nice. It made me feel connected with the rest of society. Since it was the end of july, that means i just got home from my vacation in Marbel with my precious friends during t'nalak. Also, august 10, almost a couple of weeks after, will be the day I finally turn my life around. On that day I finally gave up going to elbi and just shifted and transferred in upmin. I remember feeling so weak and nervous to talk to my father about flying to luzon that I couldn't eat my dinner properly. Basta... The point is that this is probably a very stressful week for me too. I am probably working on my dormitory and enrollment during this week.
Now I am good. It's getting better. My path is clearer. Less financial burden too. I finally got to go to school f2f. The feeling is a bit scary (scared to f up again) but refreshing. So refreshing to see classmates and teachers in person again. To attend in-person lectures and be able to ask the lecturer on the spot. I can say I am still somehow the same but different. I just have to make sure I don't mess up big again and I will be good all the way.
NOW
I am sitting on top of this wooden something. Here's a picture for reference:
Tumblr media
Okay so natapos na magdinner. Andito kasi mga pinsan namin from manila and of course ang lola namin. Malapit na ata kami mag 1 month dito. So ayown lang.
Healing ba ang time ko dito? Ewan. Not sure. Pero wala ang presence ng both parents ko so mejo oks lang jan na part.
Akoa sad facial expressions. Mas less shy dapat ko. Mas mag smile more.
Like? May balak naman talaga ako lumabas non? Inaantay ko lang matunaw kinain ko and also nadala ako sa pinapanood ko. Pero wala, pinagalitan na naman ako. SO nawalan na naman ako ng gana. Like? Like?
Kasi sinabihan niya ako (in a lambing voice actually and I like her okay huhu she is nice) na need ko daw ito para maprepare pag maging professional in the future. Oo, I know naman na need talaga ang social skills. Pero kasi... Ewan.

-Mondejar, Aileen

Love Wasn't Enough
By Alyssa Serrano
Has anyone ever experienced a bond that was built by friendship and driven by love, a platonic love? A one of a kind feeling that doesn't need sexual intimacies and sexual desires just to stay with that person. How I wish I still had that kind of feeling.
April 04, 2018 I was watching my brother as he took part in their sportsfest. It was held by their company, Ace CenterPoint. My attention was shifted when I saw a man walking, holding a bottle of water.
I followed him out and saw their team practicing a dance. I got back to where my brother was playing, but I could not forget about his face. The cold breeze that night was kissing my skin, so I made the choice to ask my brother about that man. He then told me that he was one of the SPES working under him. The next day, it was Monday afternoon when I visited my brother at his work along with my nephew. When I got to my brother's department, I did not see the man, and so I decided to just leave and eat in their food court instead.
When I was buying some food, I had my nephew beside me, but a few minutes later, when I decided to check up on him, he was gone, so I finished buying the food and ran back to my brother's department as I panicked. When I got there, I saw my nephew with the man I saw that first night of sportsfest.
I took my nephew and made my way down with a big smile on my face as I saw that man for the second time. I was always visiting my brother's department just to see that man. Soon after, my brother finally gave me his name as he noticed the main reason why I was always visiting his workplace. We eventually became mutuals on social media and chatted. We became friends as time passed and we became closer.
It was mid-July; I could hear the bang of every big speaker from every corner of the road as the town was celebrating the T'nalak Festival. The positive feeling in every street is contagious. The bright and colorful floats filled the spaces in the street. It was literally a happy place. I was with my friends that same day. We were wandering and making memories. As the night was fast approaching, a part of me was nervous. "It's just a friendly date, nothing more, nothing less." I remember that saying to myself.
We had our first date, and eventually became best of friends. We had each other's backs. a kind of relationship where you do not have to put your thoughts into words but only eye to-eye or gestures and you feel each other. It was then that we decided to commit ourselves to each other. On July 20, 2018, the SPES program ended and he had to go back to his home town in Lake Sebu, South Cotabato. It was then when we took the risk of being in a long-distance relationship. We made sure to build a healthy connection as strong as the rope.
But as they say, without challenges, there is no growth. As time flew by, we encountered our giants and battled. It was a bumpy ride to the end of our fate. So many things happen in our so-called relationship. We usually meet once a month and do the things we love when we are together. Since we started as friends, honesty and appreciation are present. We were inseparable after our 2nd anniversary. We broke up in mid-July 2020.
Love wasn't enough with distance after all. Some things may interfere. And so, our ending did happen. The days after the breakup are gloomy, it seems like the universe was mourning with me when I lost my lover and my best friend. But just like everything else, I must move forward and continue with life. I gave all my love to myself and to the people that really matter. Now I understand why Plato gave the true meaning of love that way. As love was not vulgar, meaning it wasn't centered on lust, but instead, it brought about the best in both people. It was fun until it lasted. A story of  two strangers that were met by the universe ended as strangers but with memories.

T'NALAK: STREETDANCE
WRITTEN BY: PRAISEY ELLA GABION
"From the top, y'all!" " Sir Ronnie declares solemnly. The KNCHS "Kasadyahan sa Kapatagan" dancers gather on the field after extensive practice. The sun shines down on the field, nearly burning everything it touches. Before heading to the field, I wipe my brows and gulp some water. Every July, a festival known as the T'nalak Festival is held to commemorate the anniversary of South Cotabato. It is a festival commemorating a popular piece of colorful cloth woven by local T'boli women (T'boli is a tribe in the region). There are many competitions, including one for street dancing, which our school represents in the "Kasadyahan sa Kapatagan" category.
The street dance competition was my first dance competition in my entire life, and I couldn't have imagined how much excitement and memories this competition would bring me. I feel free when I dance, I'm into it, and I have good feelings whenever I'm into it and whenever I'm doing it. I'm not sure, but one thing I've discovered is that dancing has helped me overcome my fears and anxiety, which is why I entered a street dancing competition to boost my confidence, skills, and creativity. As the sun shone down and touched our skin, I could see my team's exhausted faces. But then I realized that if you work hard, practice hard, and give it your all, the satisfaction of performing to the best of your ability is worth more than any number of first place trophies.
After several hours of exhausting step close, bending, and turning, the team departs and rests. The competition day arrives after several weeks. T'nalak Festival is finally here! Everyone was having a good time watching different categories dance in the street, and as soon as we stepped onto Alunan street, the sunlight hit our faces, and the breeze brushed through our hair, and everything felt right. That day, I was holding a giant pencil as a prop. Even though I couldn't properly lift the heavy pencil due to my thin body, I got it right with a smile, thanks to my guts. We walk through the SMRAA sports complex, seeing thousands of people smile as they watch us, and our exhaustion fades away.
I could hear the joy and voices of BATANG KN shouting "GO KN, GO GO GO!" as I entered SMRAA field. "and the atmosphere directly bestowed upon me, " I was terrified. Typically, nerves hit me while waiting for the Go signal in the stage wing, but this time I told myself, "THIS IS IT!! SHOW THEM THE TALENT OF THE HOME OF THE CHAMPIONS! "Our category, "Kasadyahan sa Kapatagan, " received a standing ovation from the audience and the judges. After the performance, we go straight to our tent and grab a bite of our packed lunches while waiting for the results.
"Listen up, people!" exclaims the host, and I leaped to my feet as he announced the winner of the "Kasadyahan a Kapatagan" Category. I became ten times more nervous when I looked out into the audience. Although I couldn't see anyone's faces in the audience because of the sun's glare, I could see the judges' faces. However, the judges smiled at us and exhaled a sigh of relief. "Our winner in the Kasadyahan sa Kapatagan category is…… KORONADAL NATIONAL COMPREHENSIVE HIGH SCHOOL" I was stunned and speechless, and I burst into tears as if all of our hard work and exhausting practice had finally paid off. We were all ecstatic, and our coach smiled as he lifted the trophy, saying, "We did it, guys! We finally brought the bacon home! "Our coach said. I'm glad I took part in that competition because it allowed me to meet many people, boost my confidence, and bring pride to our school. Those memories will undoubtedly hold a special place in my heart, and I will cherish them for the rest of my life.

T’nalak is a sacred cloth woven by the T'boli people in communities around Lake Sebu, Mindanao island. Traditionally made by women of royal blood, thousands of patterns that reference folklore and stories are known to the T’boli women by memory. Fu Dalu, a spiritual guardian, guides t’nalak weaving, a process that is enriched with taboo and ritual.
T’nalak is used for ritual purposes, as an offering to the spirits, and during festival celebrations. It is also exchanged between families for food and supplies in the T'bolis’ barter economy, which endures to this day.

Dear author, I've been reading (and re-reading) Dreamweaver this afternoon and it is just so beautiful. I was wondering: did you have a specific pattern/color palette in mind for Sakura's t'nalak, and if so - would you mind sharing your thoughts on that if it's not too much trouble? Thank you again for writing and sharing this beautiful piece with us!
Hi @birkastan2018! Sorry I just saw this! I ruminated on this specific ask for weeks and I forgot about it. I hope you forgive me 😔
The goddess places both of her arms in front of her, revealing the colored threads that connect to Sakura. They shimmer under the night sky but soon disconnect from her body to spun into an intricate pattern in shapes of diamonds and stars in shades of reds and whites. This is her first weaving design – that of the afternoon sun when they first met each other.
I think of this pattern but in shades of deep/bright red for the dark orange and white for the lighter parts.
Tumblr media
However, she is now a dreamweaver, and it is her role to weave into life Fu Dalu’s images. With a heavy heart, she resumes her position on the legogong and draws the eagle’s eyes over the threads. Black, deadly, nothingness.
Here's the pattern I see for the second t'nalak but with black more emphasized, maybe gray instead of the gold/yellow threads.
Tumblr media
Only then does Sakura realize she is not standing on the owong, but on the lake itself, and there are no threads spinning in front of her with Fu Dalu at a distance but that the goddess herself is sitting beside her, her eyes the same onyx color like Sasuke’s.
Fu Dalu’s hands, callused and wounded all the same, hold a single stalk of a water lily bloom.
And here's for the last pattern where the threads are woven vertically to create a semblance of a single floral stalk.
Tumblr media
Thank you for giving Dreamweaver so much love! 💛
