Reader insert / OC fic rec list
I'm feeling very petty today, so let's go with this.
__ __
Reader insert:
The White Wolf in the Woods - @pinkrelish
Genuinly great post war Obito characterisation, the best one out there in my opinion. It is funny and heartwarming and sad and you can watch Obito grow in front of your eyes. Can't recommend it enough.
cursed. - @lemony-snickers
Supremely underrated character study of Kakashi and his many moods out of the eyes of someone else. When I reached the end I cried. I can't believe this isn't making big numbers when it is so great.
the moon thus led by its angel - @chojuuro
One of those fics i keep recommending and recommending. This is mainly a Konan character study out of someone elses eyes and it is absolutely fantastic. Des creates this story so well and gets you invested so easily. I'm not even a Konan simp, but I adore this so so so much and its criminally underrated.
helping hands - @lemony-snickers
Ongoing Jane Austen like fic with Kakashi as the owner of an old mansion. Please I can't believe this one isn't doing well it is so interesting, such a classic historical romance with a little spice. Lem would say its because her writing is not good enough, but we all know thats not true. You should read it.
Bitter and Sweet - @whatshernameis
Very sweet Obito story that center his facial scars. It's nice to read about his insecurties about them, especially in a real world scenario. I was very in love with him after this and I would not mind a follow up at all if Hela ever wants to write one.
__ __
oc fics:
of letters and memories. - @uchihashisuii
Fantastic exploration of Jules' oc Akari's relationship with Shisui all through letters and scribbles. You don't need to know anything about either of them to read this. It grabs you by the arm and doesn't let you go, even when you what will happen - what has to happen. Jules is a fantastic author and this is such an interesting way to tell that story.
self exploration - @chojuuro
Des' oc Minoru figures out his (trans) identity by hiding behind a mask. I've always had a soft spot for this exploration of who minoru is, which has so much in it of what I like about des writing. A good metaphor, easy paragraphs that rope you in, understanding for the character... Linking this showed me I never reblogged it, which is a shame on my part as it is rent free in my mind.
lead the way - @queen-tabris
This needs more backstory, I understand that its hard to get in without all oc lore, but I promise you it is worth the read still. It's so wonderful and so painful and tell you so much about the Uchiha and Shisui in particular and Cara's oc and my love Uchiha Ren. It is sad, but sweet and so so well written.
bloom- @uchihashisuii
I put this on every fic rec list, I know, I know, but it just means so much to me. Beautiful Obito post war characterisation in which he learns to heal through gardening (and love).
To answer the call - @its-f4nf4n-again
Now this author will tell you reading this very long slow burn is not worth it, but they are a liar liar and its not true. I rarely read stuff that is already so far advanced and I'm glad I did here, because this is so wonderfully crafted. Kakashi seems so genuine, his changes comes gradually and is wonderful to read through. Its very easy to get attached to the characters in this fic and it's already a 3 year + project. Amazing!

MY SPECIAL ANGELS <3 <3
Carver:
First impression: Okay, so I was active on the Bioware forums well before DA2's release and this actually inspired me to see what old posts I could dig up (do not recommend btw). I can officially find documentation of me being EMBARRASSINGLY thirsty as far back as November 2010. I wrote a drabble on the forum shipping him with my Tabris before the game released, lol, so ultimately my first impression (i.e, gonna latch on immediately) stuck. I did assume he was going to be a lot sweeter/less prickly/honestly blander than he turned out to be. I was expecting more of a himbo.
Impression now: He's my most special boy. Better than what I'd expected, which was a pleasant surprise. He is so full of conflict all the time, and I love it. He is delightfully prickly and also a big dumb jock and it’s the best.
Favorite moment: The scene where Carver and Hawke argue about Bethany stands out as one of my favorite video game moments, period. It was a moment that just reflected Carver's character so well: he's rash and temperamental, and he's hurting so badly as he struggles to find a new path for himself and cope with Bethany's death, he feels trapped and is stifling, he still loves his family fiercely, etc.
Idea for a story: I am actually getting around to writing all of my ideas! I finished my first Warden Carver/Warden Surana fanfic (shameless plug Never Free) which is mostly about an assassination plot against my Surana but also fills in the gaps of what Carver was up to during Act 2 of DA2, which I always love to think about. I've also always wanted to expand upon the Legacy DLC and give Hawke and Carver more chances to talk about their parents and Bethany (which I am also finishing up now: Failed Attempts at Simpler Lives shameless plug #2). I've ALSO always wanted to write about what happens to him in the immediate aftermath of Dragon Age 2, and how he reacts to finding out that Hawke was left in the Fade in Inquisition. I WILL GET THERE.
Unpopular opinion: Hmm, well, I hate the templar path for him? I've come up with better reasons to justify my dislike, but the real reason is that my taste for tragedy has weird limits and it makes me too sad to think that he gets addicted to lyrium. I don't really know how unpopular that is, though. Maybe a better answer is that my boy is BEEFY. He is built like a brick shithouse, and I hate when people draw him too lean.
Favorite relationship: His relationship to Hawke is the easy canon answer. She drives him crazy, she's irritating as hell, she's his best friend, he looks to her for leadership, he wants to shove her into a mud puddle, he would tear apart a burning city to make sure she's safe. Shipwise, obviously, it's my personal pet ship which is Carver hooking up with the Hero of Ferelden and Surana specifically. He HAS to get with a mage, he just HAS to, it's too delicious.
Favorite headcanon: He's incredibly Fade-sensitive, though he can't use magic directly. He can feel the Fade being manipulated around him and how in ways that most non-mages really can't fathom. For example, he can tell when Hawke is about to throw a fireball and he needs to get the hell out of the way versus she's about to cast a buff on him. He just attributes this to a lifetime of training with a mage father and two mage siblings rather than any innate ability. When it's pointed out to him that, no, this is pretty unusual, he just kinda scoffs and says anybody could figure it out if they tried hard enough.
Bethany:
First impression: Unfortunately I can't trace my Bethany opinions back to a series of embarrassing forum posts in 2010/2011. I think my first impression is what everyone's is: that Bethany is a sweetheart baby sister, a pure cinnamon roll.
Impression now: She's more complicated than the above. She's still a ray of sunshine, still kind and thoughtful, but she also carries so much anger and guilt. She feels just as trapped in a life she doesn't want as Carver does. Even more so, because at least Carver can hope to escape his circumstances: Bethany can't stop being a mage.
Favorite moment: ALL of her banters with Isabela. I adore their relationship more than anything.
Idea for a story: I wouldn't mind a story about her leaving Kirkwall after DA2 and ending up in Ferelden with the rebel mages. I would REALLY love a story where she meets a Ferelden noble (maybe a Cousland Warden?) who just falls hopelessly and madly in love with her and ultimately Bethany becomes a teyrna or arlessa or something. Give my girl the fairy tale she used to read about as a lonely child in Lothering.
Unpopular opinion: I can’t think of anything direct, though maybe my preference for a Mage Hawke worldstate (which means Bethany dies) could count?
Favorite relationship: The relationship between the twins haunts the narrative, to me at least. I picture each twin considering the other their better half and something irreplaceable is missing once they're gone. I am also a little bit obsessed with Bethany/Isabela ever since the banter that Isabela sends her naughty books in the Circle.
Favorite headcanon: That she allows herself to be caught and taken to the Circle. She surely would have heard that Bartrand's expedition returned to the city and probably believed Hawke to be dead. In a world where Hawke isn't a mage, Bethany has spent her whole life feeling guilty for what her family has gone through to protect her. Then both of her siblings die, and taking care of Leandra has fallen onto Bethany's shoulders. I think she has enough quiet self-loathing to believe that the best way to keep her mother safe is to remove the riskiest, most volatile thing from her life: Bethany herself. Plus Bethany is just tired of running, tired of hiding, and tired of feeling so very alone.

@resistandbite -- continued from here!
--
For as kind-hearted and curious of the Lilin as Nagisa was, he knew evil when he saw it.
He was aware of the history of the human race that was he was so fond of. Their achievements, their atrocities. Most of which he had learned through books. But to see such evil not as a figment of the past that should remain only as a reminder of what must not be repeated, but as a nightmare made manifest? Torturing the innocent who fell prey to them?
Oh, how they thought themselves so high and mighty, the best and brightest above all others. But in their hubris, they would be undone by something that was not even of this world but of another so far, far away; an Angel.
Not of the kind that came from Heaven above and sang God’s name in praise. Not of the kind that called out holy, holy, holy! around the throne of the Lord, if He even existed. No, the Angels that Kaworu knew of were, in comparison, utterly alien. Some were cunning, such as Leliel or Iruel. Some held immense strength at their command, like Ramiel or Zeruel. But there was one that stood above them all - perhaps not through power or tactical intellect, but through uniqueness alone.
Kaworu Nagisa, otherwise known as Tabris, the Angel of Free Will. He bore the soul of the progenitor of all Angels, Adam. And it was through Tabris that those thought themselves the predator would come to realize that they were, in fact, the prey - and they would bear witness to the wrath of god in all it’s fury.
To the N.az.is that had pulled him from wherever he was originally and tried to contain and study him like a lab rat, they would find only death and destruction. They had attempted to gun him down with bullets, but found that he could simply reflect them with a wave of his hand; an immense hexagonal shield of light would manifest, blocking any lethal blows with an ear-splitting PING! before slicing them in half with that very same shield. He could move without walking, floating down hallways and leaving corpses of both man and machine in his wake. No-one could call for help, as his presence blocked radio-waves. Not even the most advanced of locks could stop his advance as they undid themselves before the Angel of Free Will.
Kaworu’s movement through the facility was not without purpose, without reason. From the very moment he awakened within this unfamiliar place, there was a sort of base instinct, directing him through the labyrinth that he should not have been able to navigate. Taking him deeper and deeper, past cells and prisoners that shrank away at the bloodied sight of Tabris, yet would find freedom from him merely passing by and undoing their locks without so much as a glance. And that was how he found one William J. Blazkowicz, tied to a chair, bloodied and worn but oh so defiant in spirit.
His appearance, to say the least, was inhuman. Uncanny. Pale skin that was befitting of a person with albinism, yet just a touch lighter. Silver-hued hair that was almost as white as snow. And, perhaps most striking, his eyes; an intense ruby red, their color like freshly spilled blood. Like the blood and bits of gore that covered his front. Of which he paid zero mind to whatsoever. As a matter of fact, Nagisa had a small smile upon his face, as though he were meeting an old friend.
Tumblr media
“You may call me Nagisa. Kaworu Nagisa,” the Angel responded in English to Blazkowicz’ query as he calmly, casually, made his way across the room. His gait somehow had no hint of hostility to it, and soon enough he was at the older man’s side, undoing the straps that held him to the chair. “You need not be afraid of me; I have no intentions of hostility against you.”

To the SEELE committee,
From the moment you made me, I was well aware of everything I was meant to do. You wanted a tame messenger, someone to bend to your ideals and carry out your plans without a complaint. Did you seriously think you could totally control the angel of free will? I know you didn’t, but you certainly acted like it. We never did trust each other and for very good reason.
I hate what you made me do. It wasn’t even me, really, just things void of a soul and empty of all that made me myself. They were nothing but hollow copies in my shape but I still remember everything you had them do and I wish more than anything that I didn’t. I’m sickened by those memories, even lifetimes later. How could you use me like that? Was disgracing me truly so important to you that you’d use clones of me to tear one of my closest friends apart? Was it personal? Was it to spite me? Was it just what was most convenient for you? I don’t know what I want to be true because both sincerely make me ill. You used nine of me. Nine dolls, imbued with digitized version of my thoughts, knowledge and feelings, living mockeries of everything I stood for and you used them to dismantle everything I worked so hard to protect. You used everything I knew to make her passing painful. You used me even after I was gone. Sometimes I’m still afraid I’ll wake up in one of those horrible, backlit tanks, surrounded by the raw chill of LCL, contaminated from the inside out. I don’t even have anything left to say to you. There’s nothing I can say. There’s nothing I could ever do to put the horrors of what you did to me, the other pilots and the entirety of the human race through into words. We were children. I hope you’re happy with yourselves.
- Tabris (or Kaworu Nagisa, but no one from SEELE will ever have the right to that name.)

I'm sorry if Qworu's hair looks like a brutally dismembered sea star got attached to it, I did my best to stay true to reference. I'll be happy to color it, if you like!!

Okay okay okay.  There’s a long story here.  I once saw someone draw fanart of Tom Hiddleston w/ wings, and it dawned on me that he is the perfect model for the kind of character I had.  Tabris is my vampire angel OC, and it had recently occurred to me that I’d never actually attempted to draw him before.
the first one is a post-it doodle attempted at school, and the second one is using a different reference (i don’t get why they came out so different since both used refs but eh).  the bigger one was without ref :P  the irony is that I now feel he looks TOO much like Tom/Loki cuz Loki reeeally didn’t have a lot of influence on the character, like.  at all.  Tabris is merely a character I believe Tom would be very good at portraying and is based on.
the third one is just a comparison shot.  idk exactly when that doodle of Tom is from, but it would have been around when The Avengers movie came out so ~2012 or so? compared to November 2017.  Basically my OC is a warrior of heaven captured by Hell and tortured by being forced to drink demon blood, which drove him mad and backfired spectacularly.  However, after saving him, Heaven locked him away in fear of the monster he had become.  For millennia.  All alone.  His life sucks.  ;w;

The angels found in Neon Genesis Evangelion are one of the closest in terms of depicting angels correctly, at least when we consider the Biblically accurate angels. Minus Rei and Kaworu (which I will get into), all of the angels are monstorous or obscure (Armisael or Leliel) and the ones that are akin to human are still monstorous in some way (Lillith or Sachiel). No one ever reacts positively to them until they appear as completely human and even then they’re treated with a certain trepidation because of how generally strange they are. While Evangelion is arguably a series that just uses religious symbols willynilly I’d still say that the depection of angels is on the upside when compared to say... almost any other anime.
Then there’s Kaworu, or Tabris, who tries to be human, who falls in love with Shinji, he could easily be a Lucifer figure; fighting for free will and being punished because that’s how the story goes, falling in love and being punished because, once again, that’s how the story goes and Kaworu knows that. I don’t think Kaworu knew he was going to give up the way he did, but he did, which in a way means he achieved free will, alongside feeling love and care for Shinji (who could represent the whole of humanity in a way). Also the whole... angels taking on the form of humans so that they may be perceived without deadly repercussions and the only angels that cause outright and public destruction are the ones who appear not human, yet Kaworu does the most damage inherently when considering its effected Shinji.
Of course there’s also Rei. Rei who is both Lillith and artificial, but so, so human. She’s an angel who was able to become human, to have free will, but even when she has it, she’s still following “God’s” (Gendo’s) orders. But she does break away from God to find her own happiness and it gets her killed (Armisael) and then replaced by another clone who’s completely devoid of any past memories or feelings, thus being punished for thinking free will was ever an option. She has the capability because she’s made from Yui but it’s made clear at every turn that having a will of her own outside of Gendo’s is not without punishment.
and the humans are trying to become humans through the Evas, they’re taking free will and turning it against the mothers within the Evas, of course they want to protect their child that’s piloting them, but it’s less free will and more because that’s what they were built to do. Even then, we have Yui fighting to protect Shinji more clearly and with unbridled rage, Auska’s mother awakens barely in time, and Eva 00 fights to have Rei taken out of her, because that isn’t her child that isn’t the person she was made to protect.

Fun fact about Angel NAMES okay so Angelology is a whole thing apparently mainly coming from Apocryphal works and Kabbalistic tradition and i’m pretty sure the suffix -el means “of God” and here we got tons of ‘em with names that all mean “something of God” and they all are Angels of various things like patron saints in a way, most of them have various different duties and functions and whatever but i’ve just put the one that’s probably most relevant so let’s see here
Please note many have more than one possible translation cause this whole Biblical Hebrew translation thing i guess isn’t an exact science
Sachiel, Covering or Price of God, the Angel of Water Shamshel, Lonely Conqueror of God or Sun of God, the Angel of the Morning Ramiel, Thunder of God, the Angel of...well, thunder Gaghiel, Roaring Beast of God, the Angel of Fish Israfel, interestingly Israfel is the only one from the Quran, and is usually spelled Israfil, Four-winged Angel of Music. The meaning of his name is apparently unknown, although on the EVA wiki they translate it as “The Burning One”, I don’t know where they got that Sandalphon, Co-Brother, the Angel of the Embryo Matarael, Premonition of God, the Angel of Rain Sahaquiel, Ingenuity of God, the Angel of the Sky Iruel, (spelled Ireul in the series i do not know why) Fear of God, the Angel of Terror Leliel, Jaws of God, The Angel of the Night Bardiel, also spelled Barachiel, Kindness of God, The Angel of Hail and Lightning Zeruel, The Arm of God, The Angel of Strength Arael, Light or Lion of God, Angel of Birds, Given dominion over the air and winds Armisael, Mountain of the Judgement of God, Angel of the Womb Tabris, This one’s really tough, Tabris is...Arabic, according to one person, translating as The Emerged or The Arisen, but that doen’t exactly seem to be true? I’ve seen a lot of possible translations, but none of them seem to be exact. He is usually identified as the Angel of Free Will, apparently that comes from a Greek Occult text that identifies an entity called Tabris as the Genie/Djinn of Free Will and The Sixth Hour. He’s a very strange one.
Oh yeah and Adam just means Earth or Man and is the progenitor of life and Lilith means night-hag and according to the satirical text The Alphabet of Sirach, she was Adam’s first wife before splitting with him over wanting to be on top while they had sex and then fucking Samael (Venom or Blindness of God, an Archangel of death but also a destroyer and condoner of sin who is often conflated with the serpent in the Garden), giving birth to a host of demons called the Lilin, which is of course what mankind is called in the show so isn’t tHAT NEAT probably not idek why i’m making this naww i’m sure it’ll get....at least one solid like

i never really was a big fan of anime kaworu cuz i always thought he was made to be a sort of throwaway character that moreso developed shinji’s character than anything- especially after reading the manga and watching the rebuild movies, i felt this particularly so... but my opinion can always be easily changed!! why do you like anime kaworu best; could you explain what you see about his personality to me?? im really really interested! :>
There’s so much I could go on about Anime Kaworu’s character!
I really, absolutely feel that Kaworu isn’t some throwaway character (or anything along the lines of being stale). Kaworu’s character is based on his identity, and his anxieties manifest from that for a pretty good reason. Imagine the feeling of knowing that your action or even your inaction, will alone make you responsible for the absolute annihilation of an entire species (now imagine this at age 15). I think this is where Anime Kaworu’s tragedy comes in. He is in all parts Nagisa Kaworu, Tabris, and the Final Messenger. He is someone rather engrossed into lilin culture but also someone bound to their progenitor, as a child to its mother (yes,a dilemma of Kaworu’s is bound in if it is right to return to Adam). I’m also sort of convinced that with Kaworu’s hesitance during his descent to Terminal Dogma, that he did not want to choose between lilin and angels. I feel that his death in choosing lilin came from him feeling that had to be done if it meant humanity could be unharmed (esp. with Impacts and all).
(There’s also a bit of irony of Kaworu singing Ode to Joy....)
Some really good ways of finding more about his character is  how the AT Field usage in original Eva source material is both literal + figurative; how one uses an AT Field implies who they are, and therefore why they use it. Kaworu uses his to shut himself off from the rest of the world, considering the idea of choosing lilin or angels is a reasonably paralyzing thought to have. The question is, given with how and why he deploys one of the most powerful AT Fields, can we concur that he deals with problems via self-isolation? I get that idea that this adds more to Kaworu’s irony as a character, because of how open he comes across as. He bottles up and isolates himself with that, so is it possible that he does that with large problems or does he do that with all his problems?
Another example of his character can be found through Free Will vs. Determinism (which I highlighted in Eva’s narrative here and how Kaworu is an example of that). Kaworu being on the Free Will end on that spectrum makes sense when you consider Kaworu is all-too aware of his actions and it greatly bothers him, as I’ve stated before. Ascribing to the notion of free will means that you’d have to be aware of your actions if you want to have any chance at bettering your reality or the reality of others. Free Will goes beyond the idea of being able to make choices; Free Will implies that you are to blame for what you do rather than outside forces.
Kaworu’s self-awareness doesn’t just involve his responsibility of allowing his angel brethren or lilin to roam Earth, but also his abilities. Considering how powerful he is, he’s basically holding back and the most powerful of his abilities (that we see) is shown defensively. Kaworu could have powerful offensive capability (HIS, not through the Evangelion), but since he has qualms on harming humanity, it’s possible we don’t see this (this isn’t exactly about Kaworu’s personality but rather his ability, so I think it’s worth a read!).
Anime Kaworu/Vanillagisa is a fairly ironic and tragic character, and the tragedy is a bit deeper when you take a peak at who he is and how all-too aware he is of that.
