TFILF Day 7: The Things We Forget by ckret2

From the summary: “(Spoilers through LL 23.) Information creep is an unnatural mnemosurgical plague, a curse placed on all born on Cybertron. It stands to reason that mechs who are not BORN, but BUILT, might just be exempt. An exploration of the implications, and the interrelations between those who remember everything, and those who only think they do.”

This fic. THIS FIC. This is some of the best worldbuilding I’ve read. The writing, the structure, the characterization and character exploration, the relationships, the details, just... read it. Full rec here!

TFILF - Day 3 AUs

Alternate Universe! I had a really, really tough time narrowing these down, so here have five! I have a solid four other AU recs that are going up later in the week...

Welcome! Everything is Fine.  by Chokopoppo, DesdemonaKaylose & HollowpointHeart @chokopoppo @sauntervaguelydown IDW, The Good Place AU, Starscream/Ultra Magnus, Rodimus/Thunderclash, Rodimus/Rung Rated T INCOMPLETE - Starscream dies and goes to heaven, but there's been a mix up. They think he was a philanthropist. This story is only two chapters in and just started last month and I'm already obsessed. You'll love it more if you've seen the Good Place (an incredible TV show about the afterlife, basically), but the fic delivers all the details of the premise so it's not required. Starscream is Eleanor and Ultra Magnus is Chidi and uh, it's incredible. The writing is stunning, the way TFs worldbuilding gets intertwined with the concepts of the show is wow. I'm completely sold on the rarepair... Anyway go, run, read this, right now!

Sun Rising by tragakes (lefj) TFP, Zombies Apocalypse AU, MegOP Rated E Right after the meeting with the council, but before Orion finds the matrix, suddenly, there are zombies. If that premise isn't enough to make you run to read this, well, it contains the absolute best defense, from Megatron, that I have ever read in fanon, of why he feels betrayed and breaks with Orion after what happens at the Council. The romance between them is stunning, but the plot that runs concurrently is full of surprises and twists (like, really twisty twists!), and Jazz and Soundwave are impressive secondary characters throughout. In some ways, also a TFP fix-it fic. I l

Total Eclipse by neveralarch @neveralarch G1, Culture Clash/Barbarian AU, Megastar Rated E The Decepticons herd sheepacron, and Starscream and co are fleeing from the Vosian Army for "completely understandable and non-criminal reasons." The language barrier is steep: until almost the last minute Starscream is convinced that "Megatron" is a title that he can usurp. I had the great privilege of betaing this fic, and I laughed nearly the whole time.

Where Loyalties Lie by tragakes, lefj  TFP-ish, Role Reversal AU, Megatron/Soundwave Rated M Okay, so I thought, you shouldn't rec two works by the same person in one day—but I'm sorry I just can't not. This fic is stunning, and brilliant, and as usual for tragakes longer fics, intricately plotted. The twists! I don't want to spoil anything, so here's their summary: Megatron is a fresh, promising recruit into the Decepticon cause — and somehow he finds himself falling for his anonymous handler.

And I Alone Have Escaped to Tell You by astolat @astolat G1, Time Travel and Parallel Universes AU, Cyclonus/Megatron Rated T I can't not rec this—it's the fic that got me into Transformers, after all. World-building, a glorious plot, a cast of compelling secondary characters, and a hyper-competent Cyclonus whose passion and poignant emotions are stunning.

For TFILF Day 2, I picked a scene from Chapter 5 of @sunderedstar‘s wind that shakes the seas and stars. 

Wheeljack's first step is cautious. He walks around the desk, slowly, and waits another minute, his expression hidden from Windvoice's angle, before reaching up and turning Starscream with a hand on his arm. Starscream turns, rigid but without protest, and Wheeljack gently tugs until he can rest both hands on Starscream's upper arms. "Hey, hey. This alright?" he asks, quietly.

Starscream collapses in stages. "Nothing is alright," he mumbles, muffled against Wheeljack's neck as he sags. Even when Wheeljack's arms come up and wrap around him, tracing soothing patterns in the space between his wings, Starscream's wings keep twitching up and down in some kind of corrupted, cringing flight response.

Windvoice turns away for a moment, so that there's some semblance of privacy when Wheeljack presses his mask to the side of Starscream's neck. Then he pulls back, his hands finding Starscream's face and, and presses his forehead against Starscream's.

Seeing Starscream soft and vulnerable digs into her in a wide variety of ways. When they ease off, the worst of Starscream's panic abated, Windvoice shifts slowly so that she doesn't interrupt their gradual return to the present. "Any theories?" she murmurs, as Wheeljack strokes the underside of Starscream's jaw.

It’s gotta be one of my top...15 favorite scenes in this fic. There are so many good scenes in this fic. This fic is so good.

Transformers Iacon Literature Fest: day one - fluff

Since I'm a sucker for functional polyamory, and love seeing these guys together, and most especially love it when Swerve and Whirl get the loving they deserve, today's rec is Pining by the clever @roseymoseyberry!

It's got some angst to balance the fluff (because Swerve wouldn't be Swerve if he wasn't a little angsty), some obliviousness, a lot of good intentions, and paintball. All you need, really!

it’s time for @cannibalisticcutie’s TFILF again! already missed a few days, alas. so I’m just gonna rec some good angst AUs, since they’re my jam!

Reprise d'Attaque by @neveralarch

Fencing AU! Because in what other sport would Starscream have a convenient excuse to take a flying leap at someone with a pointy weapon? Reprise is the first fic in the Attaque Composée series, and I don’t know a thing about fencing, but I know some good writing, some delicious Starscream trauma, and some sweet Starscream/Wheeljack when I read it. The translation from canon Autobot/Decepticon wartime interaction to a long-standing space alien robot fencing feud is perfectly done, the Starscream characterization is fucking crisp, Stageflight is best girl who emulates Starscream’s victory screech when she scores points, and in at least one tumblr-only ficlet Wheeljack jokes about getting a mustache. 10/10, would scream again. I need...more...

With an additional plug here for @shibara‘s absolutely gorgeous fanart for this fic, located here: http://shibara.tumblr.com/post/179461125334/aaaah-it-is-finished-this-piece-is-a-lonnng. It feels almost redundant to rec one of Astolat’s fics when they’re so well known, but the fact is her writing is phenomenal, I’m a sucker for competency porn-style/time travel/fix it fic (especially ones where you get to explore people’s reactions to someone who’s just that good), and I do so enjoy works that do Quintessons right. Cyclonus winds up with a second chance to do things right after losing everything, and by god is he going to be good at it.

You Are Listening To by @zekkass

Nonbinary Soundwave, check. A stunning exploration of some G1 AU worldbuilding, check. Soundwave/Optimus, check. Soundwave is a deeply integrated part of the living comms/datanet, part of the unique kind of community politics and culture that stems from what kind of information and coverage you provide in the network as you move up in the city, and I adore the perspective and tone it gives the narration from Soundwave’s point of view. I recommended it already for last year’s TF literature fest, but I’m doing it again. 

Your Face Becomes The Sun by @spockandawe

I just reread this at regular intervals and noodle about Starbladejack to friends constantly. The slow, growing discomfort as Wheeljack struggles to balance his old relationships with his current loyalties when he goes to visit Earth, while OP pushes more than he should, and then the relief and comfort once Wheeljack gets some space to breathe is v cathartic, and I love it.

Transformers Iacon Literature Fest 2019 Day 1: Fluff

It’s that time again! Time to share your favourite Transformers fanfics! 

A caveat - I tried to just pick fics that are completed. While I have a lot of excellent fics in my subscriptions on AO3, I am only posting ones that are done, for that instant gratification rush. :)

Also - if you know a Tumblr handle for the authors I’m missing, please let me know so I can tag them!

Fluff! All those feel good squishy feelings that make me all warm inside. 

How You See Me by @blushlouise

Sometimes, you find something you didn't even know you were missing. For Wheeljack and Mirage, a chance cooperation is the beginning of more than either of them knew they were looking for. And as Wheeljack learns to see the mech behind the invisibility, and Mirage begins to rely on the solid strength beneath the mask, they turn out to be just what the other needed.

This fic pushed a lot of fluffy buttons for me: slow burn, distrust to respect to attraction, everyone's a little broken... Even though it has a healthy dose of angst along with the fluff, the fluff totally wins out in the end. 

Contains plug-n-play interfacing but nothing that I would call human-analogue explicit.

In the interest of not making this post twice as long, here’s a list of my fic recs involving Soundwave!

Bayverse/Knightverse

Sweet Release* by ros3bud009  - That there isn’t more Shatter/Dropkick work is a crime, but this fic almost makes up for it. It’s the first fic I read after watching the Bumblebee movie, and the description of the PNP is FANTASTIC. 

Dreamtime* by zuzeca - A horror/angst fic set years in the future. The imagery of Primus’s control over the Decepticons is spot-on, and it’s one of those fics you think about even after you’ve finished reading it. 

Transformers Prime/Aligned

Five Greetings, and One Farewell by prowlish - a 5+1 KOBD fic focusing on how Knock Out and Breakdown met. It’s an interesting take on the circumstances of their meeting I’ve never seen before!

Rise by Kemmasandi - an Aligned AU that retraces the path to war. I’m not caught up on this fic at the moment, but what little I’ve read has wonderful writing and worldbuilding. So much worldbuilding. 

IDW 

An Art and A Fortunate Accident by morethansky - Chromedome/Rewind, basically. I especially loved the fact that this fic takes place over years, and you feel like you’re living alongside the characters, giving you a better understanding of just how long Cybertronians can live. 

Working Through It by Trinary - Skywarp/Marissa Fairborn/Thundercracker. I read this fic while on my last day of vacation, and I enjoyed it so much I wasn’t annoyed I’d have to go to work the next day! I love fics that make you realize Cybertronian’s lives are on a scale that is nowhere near similar to a person’s. 

Silence and Memory by matchka - A great exploration of the Brainstorm’s relationship to Chromedome and Quark post-issue 38. It’s introspective and melancholy, but I think it fits Brainstorm’s character so well. 

The Sum of Its Parts by owlix - This fic has a little bit of everything.....gestalts, menemosurgery as intimacy, cuddling, the toll it takes when you’ve been missing for months and no one realized you were gone...this is a Prowl/Constructicons fic exploring the events after Megatron’s return in exrid. It’s a great look into the parallels that are often drawn between mind control/mnemosurgery/gestalts in canon. 

The Door in Petrex’s Quarters by ckret2 - Finally, here’s a wonderful and angsty SG!IDW fic to end the list. It takes the already dark tone of the Wreckers series and dials it up to eleven, but in a way that feels absolutely natural. I can’t recommend it enough.

The author of this is a very artful writer, like hOO, with a lovely attention to detail and flow and sound, and the ability to craft imagery like nobody’s business. TFILF Day 5: Behind Me a Sword by oriflamme 

Continuing in the vein of sentient spaceships and Ancillary Justice, this is an Imperial Radch AU centered on Tailgate, Cyclonus, and Whirl. There’s an implied spoiler for the end of the trilogy, so I recommend reading it first, (I recommend reading it anyway, they’re my favorite sci fi novels) but you could probably follow the fic without having the trilogy. How this fic works with the characters in the new context of the Radch is so so well done, the descriptions are excellent, and the relationships are wonderful. Full rec here!

TFILF - Day 4 Humor and Crack

It's the humor and crackfic day and gosh do I have some good ones. Transformers (especially G1) is uniquely suited to this particular genre and I love it. 

who's a heretic now? by oriflamme @sunderedstar IDW, Megatron/Pharma Rated G Pharma joins the crew of the Lost Light! He and Megatron meet for brunch once a week! To bond over sanity and mutual despair! This fic came into my house and dragged me kicking and screaming into shipping this rarepair. It's also ridiculously funny, everyone should read it. Seriously, almost every single section contains a new, hysterical, absolutely perfect Lost Light adventure of the week (for example, the 'creepy clown aliens.') I didn't know it was possible to fit this many incredible one-liners into 4k but, uh, wow. Just to begin with: "Rodimus gives Pharma a Rodimus star for every week aboard he doesn't kill anyone."

Peace is Hell by navigatorsghost @of-fire-and-light G1, Megastar, Skywarp/Thundercracker Rated M Something strange is happening around the Decepticon base. Skywarp and Thundercracker are the only ones who notice the, uh, out of character behavior! And they have to fix it before all the fluff literally saps everyone's life force. This fic. Is so good. It's so funny. And just, so many little delightful emotional arcs and so much humor and it's so original and I love it and it makes me happy. The summary is great too: "Peace, love, fluff, Decepticons... *record scratch* Decepticons?!”

Attention Paid by @bibliotecaria-d G1, MegOP Rated PG Grimlock ropes Soundwave into ending the war...by getting Megatron and Optimus to hook up. I love fics with a smart Grimlock who knows how to get what he wants, and this sure is that. It's short and hilarious and highly recommended!

Decepticats by @doomspoon888 G1, mostly gen, background Megastar Rated G Starscream accidentally adopts a cat. Unspeakably adorable shenanigans ensue. Unspeakably adorable, I tell you. And there are kittens. Go, enjoy, the funny and fluffy okay it's beautiful. Also, I can't believe this is the first fic from Spoon I've rec'd this week because everything Spoon has ever written deserves to be on a rec list. Go! Read them all!

I read a lot of angst and AUs which...made this surprisingly difficult, so some most of them are also AUs in addition to the main theme. but here we go!

Feb. 1st: Fluff

a short and sweet little friendship story with Rung taking care of an injured, slowly starving Whirl in an alien prison. complete with cuddles!

Feb. 2nd: Angst

another Whirl and Rung one, which kind of teeters on the edge of fluff as well. mostly a character study of Whirl and his trauma, interwoven with soothing massage and paintjob time.

this fic has it all - Soundwave/Optimus, nonbinary Soundwave, fascinating worldbuilding, complex communication hub-mech politics, Soundwave and Optimus racing around an AU Cybertron that seems so fleshed out yet alien through Soundwave’s perspecetive...it’s just a ton of fun!

Feb. 4th: Humor/Crack

Champion by @astolat

all of Astolat’s fic are interesting, but this one is the story of how Rumble and Frenzy somehow accidentally sort of wind up cooperating with Autobots in the name of Sick Fucking Beats and end the war with poetry along the way. Astolat's fic are all Quality (especially And I Alone Have Escaped To Tell You, a close runner up for the one-shot...) but any fic with the tag Underground Dance Party wins the crack category in my heart.

Feb. 5th: One-shot

the adventures of Prowl and empurata!drone!Megatron! based on art by @larrydraws. featuring Prowl having a midlife crisis over the mysterious poetry showing up all over his apartment, like a dope. with Pushkin! 

Feb. 6th: Multichapter

Mirror Mirror by @albawrites 

an old classic - Krok winds up in an IDW Shattered Glass universe through shenanigans, and has to find his way back to his version of the Scavengers. this is one of those fics where I wish there was a million words-worth of it, because the world building is phenomenal and I want to bury myself in more of what we just scrape the surface of. Shattered Glass done right is a beautiful thing, and the SG!DJD alone are super entertaining!

Feb. 7th: Your choice!

Technical Difficulties by Cici_Nota

eleven chapters of Ratchet desperately trying to save the Lost Light as he relives the same sequence of events over and over again in a time loop, with mounting frustration every time something goes awry and he’s forced to start all over again from the beginning. the slow one step forward, two steps back nature of the obstacles that keep getting through in Ratchet’s way as he becomes progressively more desperate, the subtle relief when Drift starts to casually accept the weirdness and help Ratchet partway through - it’s all so good. 11/10, definitely need to read again...

Feb 8th: 18+ Smut

Mend What is Broken by @warlordenfilade

reccing the whole series, because it was one of the first fic series I read while dipping my toes into Transformers fandom, and so one that is near and dear to my heart. Drift and Ratchet and oodles of hurt/comfort/fluff smut that I have reread...an embarassing number of times...

After crashing on an alien planet, Bluestreak and Dragstrip need to work together to get back to Earth.

A/N: I got a little tired of fandom personifying Bluestreak as a woobie. He’s a sniper, an elite, the best the Autobot’s have. Stands to reason that he’d be a capable of pulling on his big bot panties, and getting himself through a crisis situation.

Today’s selection is an older story, but I love it. I had to include the author’s note in the summary because it helps explain why I love this fic so much: Bluestreak putting on his big bot panties. XD

It’s no secret that I love Bluestreak, but I love him more as a competent fighter, a solider, someone who knows what needs to be done and then goes out to do it. Yes, he’s friendly and chatty and all that, but he’s also a force to be reckoned with to be sure. This story has that all in spades.

The Long Walk Home by @doomspoon888

Megatron and Starscream are thought dead and left behind on a distant battlefield. With Starscream's wings damaged and comm systems down, they've no choice but to make their way back on foot. From east to west coast.

Even with legs as long as theirs, it's going to take a while.

I love this fic. It’s a slow burn, which is totally my jam. It’s also a classic enemies-to-friends-to-lovers trope, combined with a dash of “trapped together” although they aren’t trapped so much as forced to depend on one another.

If MegaStar interests you in the least, do yourself a favour and check this story out.

Nightlight and Dash, from the Alt-Vos Saga by Gemma_Inkyboots and Raisedbymoogles on AO3. Dashlet is getting some happy nuzzles XD. Love this story so much, and just re-read it not long ago ^_^
