What curious caption or sequence got you to fall into the rabbit hole that is your femininity?
Let’s make Flashback Friday a little more positive and interesting today. I can’t remember what were the first captions I got into since were talking around 18 years ago (I feel old lol), but I can say it was something involving TGFA and it’s links.
How were my first favorite captions like? They used old and blurry images like the one I used for this caption. I was also info MTF TG transformations like the ones made by Mashiro’s Castle. But while the captions of today are brief and to the point, the TG feminization captions of yesterday were more like fiction stories. Little did I knew that my encounter would become a way into exploring my sexuality little by little as the years went by.
How was your first encounter like? In what ways did it affect you?

Stopping Sprouts
Like roads in a city, veins in your body need careful mapping. When they don’t stick to the plan, sporadic vascular malformation – malformed veins – occur, causing pain and disfigurement. These veins form lesions containing genetically faulty cells (mutants). Currently, lesions often recur after treatment. Researchers now search for new therapeutics by growing mutant endothelial cells (ECs), collected from the veins of patients, in dishes. RNA sequencing revealed mutant ECs produced the signalling molecule TGFa. Fluorescence microscopy revealed when supporting cells from lesions (stromal cells) were grown alongside normal ECs, they triggered more EC sprouting (pictured, middle, right) compared with non-lesion stromal cells (left). Next, by grafting mutant ECs into mice, they found EC-produced TGFa triggered stromal cells to release the signalling molecule VEGFA. This caused EC sprouting and malformed veins. Treating mice with afatinib, a drug that interferes with VEGF signalling, decreased lesions, suggesting it may be a useful therapeutic.

Anon from earlier - reading more, could it be possible to read the PAD Supergirl stuff as a trans+ metaphor?
Between taking on a new identity and changing your name, your body changing in interesting ways, your wardrobe getting a lot more colorful and you getting into a lot more fights, the aspects of the superhero that map onto adolescent power fantasy also translate pretty solidly onto a transgender power fantasy as well. So yes, I can see that.
If you’re talking specifically what happens with Comet, there’s definitely something resonant there, to the point it wound up on TGFA, which I of course was not familiar with in any way when I was an egg. I don’t know if PAD intended the character to be genderfluid as the term is known today, but we were pretty starved for representation (we still are, but we were REALLY starved back then) so anything that gave us The Gender Feels got folded in under the umbrella, even if it wasn’t necessarily intended to be a great or accurate portrayal. The series of Warrior issues where Guy Gardner became “Gal Gardner” wound up on there too, after all.

Week 13 Galleries
Andrea Geyer - Hales
Andrea Geyer’s show called “On This Day,” included a very large amount of slide projectors, all atop piles of books on top of various desks and tables. They were all pointed at the walls surrounding them and had slides that were all various shades of blank white - ranging by projector. There was also a sound piece portion where the artist speaks about loss, from her perspective and also from the perspective of her mother who was a polish holocaust survivor. I was really interested in the slide projectors use as a element of the sound piece overall, considering one slide projector makes a certain amount of noise, but having at least 10-20 changing from slide to slide all at different times really made for interesting background noise to her spoken piece. My interest in the use of slide projectors has resurfaced, since I had seen  that original show where the slide projector was projecting on top of an actual piece, whereas in this show the slide projectors created the actual piece on the walls. I also learned about Jaques Derrida’s concept of ‘Hauntology’ from the press release of this work, which talks about how the present is always haunted by the future and the past, which is something that is prominent in my work by way of intergenerational trauma - so therefore something I was really excited to learn about.
Michelle Handelman - Signs and Symbols
I arrived to Michelle’s opening this weekend with only a few minutes to spare to look around the gallery. I recognized the video pieces having the character from the show “Thank God for Abortion” (which I wrote about seeing a little while ago) whose name is Viva Ruiz. After talking to Nora and Michelle more about the show after dinner, I learned that Viva’s character is named Marguerite, and she is the same character as in the Thank God for Abortion show. In Michelle’s show, I couldn't quite understand if she had kind of created a continuation of the original TGFA show, or if it was a figurative documentary of the character - it seemed more like a music video kind of displaying the songs/sound pieces that Viva and Michelle created together. A piece of the show that was extremely puzzling to me is that Michelle chose to cover the front window of the gallery in black vinyl.. therefore covering the entire front window - or also how a lot of smaller galleries seem to advertise/garner foot traffic. Therefore I was really confused as to the purpose of this. Nora had said that Michelle wanted to make the room darker inside, but maybe it was just because I saw the show later in the day, but I really thought it was pretty dark inside already? I was basically just really confused about the purpose of it in general!
Mark Manders - Tanya Bonakdar
Every time I have been to the Tanya Bonakdar Gallery, there has always been a really interesting show with kind of similar appearances/materialities (at least recently perhaps.) In “Writing Yellow,” Mark Manders central piece includes three giant busts that look to be made of clay, me and Nora figured out that they were actually cast into metal which must have made them extremely heavy! They reminded me of that park in VA that has all of those decrepit old busts of every presidents head that are all around 9 feet tall! If you don't know what I am talking about you should look up some photos because it is pretty crazy. I thought that visually the show was really interesting, but this was a really rare instance in that reading the press release made me a lot less interested in the work than I was before! The press release talked about how the artist always wanted to be a writer but basically just didn’t think he was successful at that, so he used sculpture as a way to transfer ‘language to objects.’ I  think i was mainly not interested in this explanation of the work because I basically feel like that is what every single artist is doing anytime they make a piece! We are all trying to communicate via the work we make whether it is very obvious or not I think.
George Egerton-Warburton - Shoot the Lobster
Nora and I stumbled upon this gallery while on the way to a different one, and it was a really interesting find! It was a relatively small space with two large scale paintings on the wall, which were kind of just abstract paintings that looked like a ball of rainbow yarn. Aside from the paintings, there were these extremely interesting desk mechanisms in the middle of the room. There were two desks, that each had a motor attached somewhere underneath them that made this long pole attached to the top move in a circle and kind of back and forth also. The long poles each had a scarf tied around them so the scarfs kind of swayed with the movement. It was a really kind of odd set up that was really encapsulating all the same. I think it was kind of a mixture of the repetitive movement of the kinetic piece, along with the repetitive sound of the motor and the screech of the metal as well.
Cameron Clayborn - Simone Subal
Cameron Clayborn’s show ‘Through the Wrong Tongue,’ was a really interesting show of materials. It was kind of similar to the show I had seen last week titled ‘of body.’ I think that they were similar in the way that the sculptures were so shiny they were liquid looking, in the previous case it was because of the fiberglass on metal, and in this show it was because they were soft-sculptures covered in thick plastic vinyl. A really interesting point of view I had never thought about that was talked about in the press release of the show was that of the history of sewing/sewing machines being a traditionally feminine practice, and that it really also has a specific queer history in the context of protest banners, drag outfits, etc. and how this fits into the artist’s practice being a queer man. I had just always thought about sewing/fiber arts in a feminine context but never really in a queer one as well.
Jessi Reaves - Bridget Donahue
The thing that I was really the most interested in at Jessi Reaves’ show was the insane amount of carpet! I can't remember if I have ever been to Bridget Donahue before, but I am assuming there is no way that there would be that much of a odd milk chocolate colored brown carpet in so much of the gallery and it not being part of the show. I think that the carpet in the gallery was just so shocking to me that I really only focused on that for a long amount of time. I feel like such a subtle change just really impacted me in the way that I feel like the only place you see carpeted floor is your home? So its just a really specific feeling to see carpet covering a floor in a gallery. Anywho, I was also really interested in the ‘caged chairs.’ There were two chairs that were kind of imprisoned inside respective boxes, and also tied up around the box. I think that its an interesting question of functionality of objects when you are able to see them but they are basically stripped of their function.
