The Hanukah Choose Your Own Tropes BL Adventure!
So! @iguessitsjustme is running a fantastic Choose Your Own BL Adventure with multiple romance options and lots of choices... and this is my mini version for Hanukah!
This will last Eight Days and the pairing is already determined but the path they take to get together is up to you! I will be posting each night at some point after sundown (Hanukah!) and I will give you are many choices as i can think of.
Anyway, the first night is about... not exactly how they meet but how the audience seems them meet. Not a meet cute, but a sweet meet for those watching!
But, first, we need an introduction... don't we?
The shot starts on a smiling, chubby young man who's whipping up a batter in a slightly too messy kitchen. His apron has flour, there's a few splotches in his hair and he's laughing about something. This is Jelly! He's a pastry student who's always been popular and well-liked. The youngest in his family by a decade, he was the apple of everyone's eye and is more than a little spoiled by the love and tender care of his three older sisters and his adoring parents. He's always positive, has never had any reason to worry and generally just really likes people. He's not used to being disliked which means that his relationship with our love interest is a bit... interesting.
Because Latke's opening shot is very different. Latke is in the kitchen as well, another culinary student, but he is cutting neat and perfect vegetables for a soup and his face is set stoically as he pours them into a perfectly clear broth. Lakte is the oldest of two in a family that struggled and he has never been popular nor has he ever been spoiled. He is strict, neat and quick to judge people for being popular or particularly positive. Although he is loyal to those that are loyal to him, he does not trust easy kindness and that means he looks at Jelly with constant suspicion.
The hardest part of all of this? Both of them have a crush on their current student mentor, Gelt. And while Jelly laughs it off and tries to turn it into a joke, Latke is not on board with that.
But now we're on the scene and a love story must commence!

The Middleman's Love Ep 8 (Finale) Stray Thoughts
Last week, Jade struggled and finally made things clear with Mai, who won by taking King's advice to back off Jade for a while.
Yes! No recap! Straight to boyfriends content!
I'll let them have the little bit of comedy in Jade's reactions since I enjoyed the music track. Still, when will a Yim and Tutor both be ready???
Giving us shirtless in bed but they're still getting comfortable is okay. Just don't end it here.
Yes, King and Uea should get to tease Jade.
Uea looks so comfortable in this sweater.
Oh, I was wondering what we'd do with Jade's insistence that Mai is perfect. I wonder what these two are like once they settle and run into troubles.
"I have the new Conan episode," feels like a Netflix and Chill situation.
Pratfall kiss over a couch is new.
They're moving in together?? That seems a little fast but go off!
King and Uea flashing their rings will never get old.
I like King wanting to tease Jade before realizing he left Uea behind and going back. Meanwhile, Uea just seems content to watch everyone play.
Cheewin does really enjoy these extended couple epilogues.
Okay, Jade's whole family crossing Mai was actually funny.
It's actually such a good sign that Jade's parents are still flirty in front of their kids. Makes the dad's offer to consult them land better.
Aww they made fried chicken for Jade.
You say you don't mind Jade not doing housework now, Mai...
Honestly, the lighting is too bright in this kitchen.
I like the way Jett feels like an eldest sibling.
Oh shit we're getting into Mai's dating history. This conversation is really good, and I like them figuring out some communication and potential hangups early.
I like Jade showing Mai his drawings, but I feel like we're using the theme song too much.
DID HE JUST THROW THOSE GLASSES WITH HIS TEETH??
Okay, I like Jade bringing it back up and saying he wants to do it, and then they have Jade taking the lead.
That was very stylish. I'm satisfied. Good job, Tutor and Yim.
NGERN IS BACK!
This is a sexy family, holy shit.
The brother eye fight was good. I am so glad to have Ngern on our screens again.
I really like that their families are both supportive, and they're all happy to transition into the blending phase.
Oh, again? I see Cheewin heard my complaints. Continue.
Much better use of the glasses!
Final Verdict: 6, There Are Some Good Ideas Here. I like the thing Cheewin does where he's playing with how people see themselves and each other, and how many of us are constantly faking it. I don't really think the comedy with Jade worked out here, so the core angst with him struggling about feeling weird and unwanted felt like it dragged. I'm a fan of the extended epilogue thing Cheewin likes to do and the way it feels like a victory lap, but I'd like to see him write a couple in that transition as a focus of the show. Still, I think it's a show people either know they want to watch or don't almost immediately.

I have got to get over my grudge against face filters or face-tuning or whatever it's called when they blur the actor's face so their skin is completely smooth and texture free and very pale and has no dimensionality.
I'm watching Light On Me, and I'm charmed by all the characters, but I keep getting distracted by the fact that none of them look like human beings. grrr. Like, it kind of fits the comic book tropey-ness of the story, but I still would prefer to see their god danged faces.
(Fun fact: Shin Woo's actor's face is the reason I started watching Light On Me in the first place. Kang Yoo Soek has a small part in Beyond Evil, and within a minute of his appearance on screen I was like, who is THAT???👀, and immediately went to MDL to see what else he was in. Turns out he was in a BL! so I decided it was finally time to check this one out. Maybe I'm just resentful about them hiding his face from me. On the other hand, Beyond Evil and Light On Me are from the same year, and he looks a decade younger in the latter, so I guess the filtering helps with that? idk, I'd prefer everyone's real faces. But I realize that with this, as in many things, I am not the target audience.)
My thoughts on Light On Me so far (im on episode 3 oops, actually it was 4): It feels like a high school romance comic book aimed at 12 year olds come to life. Which is not at all a criticism! But the aesthetic—bright, flat lighting, wide open spaces, saturated pastels and primary colors, the aforementioned face filtering—along with the trope filled, bare bones nature of the story give it this artificial feel. I don't read comic books, manga or manwha of any genre, so I could be wrong in this comparison, but it does tell like it exists outside of the real world in the same way that Disney Channel kids shows do (though not in the same world.) The characters, so far, don't feel like they exist outside of the story, not shallow, exactly, just that the rest of their lives and relationships are a vague blur, and the initial conflict—Shin Woo doesn't want Tae Kyung to join the student council!—feels like the sort of artificially induced high stakes of a kid's show. The—gasp—pratfall with a dildo.
I probably sound judgmental, but that's partly because super fluffy shows aren't my thing in general, and partly because I'm in a weird mood right now where even the real world doesn't feel all that real to me, but I reiterate, this is not a criticism. The show is creating a certain feel to tell a certain story, and (so far at least) it's doing it effectively.
And I am intrigued by the story, and the characters! Tae Kyung who has been convinced by the wise teacher to try making friends. Da On, the student president who is so kind and can't say no to anyone. Shiwoon, the class clown who can see what's happening but won't get involved. So Hee, the girl from the sister school, persistent in her three year (!) crush. And of course tsundere Shin Woo, possibly with some internalized homophobia, and who we know, based on Shiwoon's hints and the laws of Romance Tropes, must have a crush on the new boy and can't handle it.
The taundere seme is a trope I love when it works well, and loathe when it's bad, and I think it's working here for me because Tae Kyung is such a weirdo. He's no blushing maiden uke, he's blunt and doesn't care that's he's awkward, and still not sure if he wants to even bother with other human beings. It makes Shin Woo's attraction to him more specific and real, and makes me curious to see how their dynamic develops.
So even though the character don't feel anchored to any reality outside of what we see on screen, in the small slice of a tv world they do exist in they seem complex and worth getting to know.
(They also intrigue me enough that part of me wants to see these same characters and conflicts, but framed in more gritty realism style, like that of Weak Hero Class One. I think there's enough there to make it work! But that's more about my personal taste than anything else.)
edit: not that Weak Hero Class One is exactly realistic. But it's a different kind of fairy tale atmosphere. One that sometimes gets called "gritty realism."

The Sign Episode 1 Thoughts.
It's been a while since I've been into a show enough to post on it so I'm really grateful for this especially after I just binged I feel you linger in the Air and I'm in my feels over how amazing it was.
Seeing The Sign after IFYLITA makes me so happy because of how much BL has improved as a genre. The diversity of stories just keeps getting better and better and I'm glad I get to witness it 😊
Enough with my feelings 😂
1. I'll be honest, while I love the whole action BL thing, I actually fast forwarded through the first part because I'm not too into fight sequences, I love the fact that it's happening but I don't really care enough to watch it. I'm here for the characters.
I've already read some posts on reddit about the fight scenes seeming amateur and I'm like, that's what you're focusing on?🙄 Sure the scenes aren't hollywood level but they're the best we've seen in BL so far and I know the entire cast and crew put their backs into it to make it work. I think it came out great.
2. I hate Chart and already love Tharn. I didn't realize Babe(Tharn's actor) was that small😂 but he's my new Baby and I'll do anything for him.
3. Billy is so fine 😊 that's it.
4. Yai's abs have me caressing my screen anytime he shows up.
5. I already like the side couple although the cheating has me giving Khem the side eye. I hope we get enough info on that.
6. I hope the fantasy element is incorporated well into the story and is able to work well with the mystery that we have building up.
7. I loved the pratfall kiss and I really like the buildup to Tharn and Phaya's relationship. I like how they met and how Tharn has been protecting Phaya. The scene on the beach with both of them alone had me smiling.
MY FINAL THOUGHTS.
This was a great setup episode. We have our main characters and the friend group in place already. I can't wait for more.

Well, Season 2 of TDI Reloaded (TDI Rematch) has had its first four episodes out for about a week. I figured I’d share my thoughts about what we’ve gotten so far:
-The challenges are a little more fun than in Season 1. They have a good amount of variety and the often led to really fun moments between the characters. From the Skunks clogging the toilet slide, to basically all the Rat Faces being carried by Caleb, and of course the AB questions challenge. My girlfriend and I straight up paused the episode each question to try and guess the answers. (We got over half of them right.) As for my personal ranks on the challenges:
-Taking it to the Rim Reaper (Ep. 2): Memorable concept, without going too overboard with it. Also, I’m a bit of a simpleton sucker for the pratfalls.
-Choosin’ for a Bruisin’ (Ep. 4): Great challenge for both character insights and just playing along with it during a first-time viewing.
-You Poor Saps (Ep. 3): I technically prefer Ep.1’s challenge, but this one led to so many gold character moments.
-The Pink Painter Strikes Again (Ep.1): Solid start. Simple challenge, nothing too crazy.
-Animation is pretty much on the same level as Season 1. The facial expressions are GOLD! I’d argue some parts feel more dynamic than Season 1, like the slide moments in Episode 2, but overall, no complaints.
-The characters feel like they never left:
-Priya: I kinda get why she’d fall hard for Caleb, as keep in mind, she’s been stuck with this training with hardly any friends. This also explaining why she instantly jumped to befriending Millie when it seemed they got along. It’s clear that she does value the friendship as she was the only one to give Millie a chance after Episode 2. She also did work as an effective leader in the same episode, instantly taking advantage of the challenge’s slide order rule. Overall, I’m okay with Priya.
-Bowie: I dig his plot. Bowie made it clear at the end of Season 1 that he’s willing to bend the rules…and it’s clear that he probably cares about Raj more. Since people are more weary of him after the finale, it makes sense to have his conflict be more about whether he’d play dirty again. Also, this joker in Episode 4! As a captain (assuming those roles are official) I feel Priya’s more effective, though.
Millie: It’s clear she had alot more learning to do about being a good friend. (I still say both her and Damien could have taken the two-point slide together if they were both weary on the third.) Though her elimination was pretty anticlimactic, unfortunately. I do prefer her in Season 1, but I’m not against the plot they gave her.
Julia & MK: I’m putting them both together because they’re basically a package deal this time around. Overall, live their dynamic. It was a sudden jump from animosity to friendship, but that’s just because they know game when they see it. They have so much fun just being underhanded together, and it’s honestly a refreshing take on villain alliances. While I’d say MK is the breakout of the two, since she’s the brains of the whole alliance, Julia’s dialogue is so on point that it hurts. My hopes is that MK does succeed in backstabbing Julia, but she doesn’t even get mad. She just respects a player and roots for her to win…underhandedly, of course.
Emma: Compared to Millie…honestly not that mixed. I’m glad she cut the chord with Chase early and she got him booted in a clever way. The one thing that’s kinda backwards is how she ends up being a poor judge of character in Episode 4 when she basically red Chase like a book in Episode 2. But then again, I guess that’s just chalked down to being used to his sorry butt the most?
Chase: Everybody (including me) called that he’d be an early boot…and he was. I’m perfectly content with that, as it’s clear that character development was never the end-goal with Chase. And the moment he left, the Skunk Butts became the de facto best team. Props on his ballsy attempt to outrun the balloons in challenge 1, though.
Zee: All I wanted from Zee in Season 2 is for him to still be Zee…Good news, Zee is still Zee. I honestly got worried the “soda influencer” plot would be a cheap and easy way to make him an early boot…and they make him Papa Zee instead. I love this lanky boy.
Ripper: My one complaint on Ripper is that he feels like he’s really not there that much. In Episode 2, he disappears for a good while until the mid-end. And he doesn’t really get to interact with his new team that much. The only real time he interacts with the other skunks is when he asks about how to approach Axel. Let’s talk about Ripaxel…I honestly really wanna see what they do with it! It is a little sudden how it starts, but in its defense, so was Rajbow. Their interactions in Episode 3 were fun to watch, and that POEM. Hey, fanfic writers…Raj and Ripper having a poetry battle…think about it. Despite him disappearing sometimes, what we do get from him is enjoyable. Here’s to more!
Wayne and Raj: My boys are untouched! The one blessing is that they NEVER went for some stupid jealousy plot! (Wayne cares too much for Raj for petty stuff like that.) And they are arguably goofier than in Season 1. (Shoutouts to them wanting burgers after seeing the slides and the “Cyclone-Spin Cycle”) It is funny how many people (again, including me) wanted to see their mischievous side more, but instead the boys are even bigger boy scouts with their understandable disgust at cheating. While I still think one leaving earlier is more likely, I really, REALLY hope that they stick for a little. Imagine them against Julia and MK for at least an episode or two! And while I still would love a Damien VS. MK finale, Wayne or Raj VS. MK works great! Fair and honest player against a crafty cheater. It would be gold!
Damien: I’m really holding out for him since he’s pretty much jogging in place a bit. Sure, he wants to take more risks, but it’s not to a great extent. Then again, the season’s only gotten started. I just hope his crafty side comes out more later. He’s not too afraid anymore, so now he needs to push his brains to the forefront.
Scary Girl: I dig the “Lauren” design. Unfortunately, the “normal” bit wasn’t really used all that much, as she barely had a presence in Episode 1. She had some small scenes, but nothing outstanding until she got herself eliminated. Though given how she was enjoyable, but pretty one-note last season, I feel she works well as a first-boot. Will she return to stalk everyone? Who knows. Probably.
Nichelle: I dig her more confident attitude. Part of me wishes we saw her gaining that confidence DURING the season, rather than all that development being off-screen, though. It makes sense for her to train beforehand, but I would have just as easily liked her having a bit of fire in her and then training throughout the season. As she is, I like how she’s so done with her old Hollywood life. Hopefully she does interact with Damien more, as they seem to have a friendship growing.
Axel: Besides MK, Axel was the biggest relief of the S1 pre-mergers. She’s still hostile and hardcore, but I find her showings of care towards the team being well-needed additions. Examples being her helping Damien back to camp after the four-point slide, and her warning her team to be cautious about getting stuck with the sap. I already said my piece on Ripaxel, so my personal hope is that there is a survival or stealth challenge where the two have to work together. (Ala Hide and Be Sneaky, Eat, Puke, and be Wary, or Hurl and Go Seek if you wanna count the “zombie” thing.)
Caleb: Caleb was simple, and he still kinda is. I like how paranoid he was in Episode 1, but overall he’s just a more effective Justin. I do prefer him over Justin, as he can be a massive asset to the team, as shown in Episode 3. Like Zee, I’m fine with him as is, and can only wait and see what he does in later episodes. Will his alliance become genuine romance or just a tool for Caleb to outlast Priya? Probably the ladder, as he doesn’t seem to show any romantic interest in her that feels genuine.
And that’s Total Drama Island Rematch so far. Tomorrow should be the debuts of Episodes 5 and 6, so here’s to a great season. I was honestly shocked at how much I loved this cast, and how refreshing it felt seeing the show after a seven (eight if you ignore Ridonculous) year hiatus. I will be making sure to watch the series again when it comes to MAX in seventy years. As for whether or not I wanna see the Gen 4 cast again…I’ll probably be content with them stopping their run after Season 2. Reloaded and Rematch work as just two halves of a nice little package, and I really don’t want them to risk having this lovable cast go through what Gen 1 did. If we do get a new season, I’d be fine with them having a new cast. Fans will probably like them as much as they do with Gen 4.

Peter Cushing as Osric in Laurence Olivier's HAMLET, 1948
When I watched this movie for the first time, I was delighted to see Peter Cushing in it! He plays the effete, foppish courtier who comes to Hamlet with Laertes' "friendly" fencing challenge. Although he plays Osric for laughs, even doing a hair-raising pratfall backwards down some stairs, Cushing gives Laertes a sinister knowing glance in the fencing match later on, when he hands him the poisoned blade.

Vampire Chronicles Book Review/Rant #4
The Tale of the Body Thief
Things take a turn once again! We got into silly Lestat adventures, met new vampires, the world was a bit changed after Akasha’s murder spree, the vamps who are left have to stick together now so we must get another chapter of this new coven right? WRONG.
Anne said it’s time for The Most Special Boy to have a turn in the spotlight again!
I mean, it was still fun and I liked it overall, don’t get me wrong, but I think this is where The Vampire Chronicles start to get unhinged. It was a bit like watching a slow train crash, you know The Body Thief is lying, everyone warns Lestat not to do it, you know everything is going to go wrong, and you watch Lestat do it anyway.
Overall I liked David and Lestat’s relationship, learning about David’s life and how he was unsatisfied that after devoting his life to studying mysteries he didn’t feel like he gained any more purpose or understanding in life. I didn’t get much out of Lestat’s hallucinations/memories of Claudia however.
It was interesting how every vampire, even Louis, turns on Lestat in the human body, we know Marius lets him get away with everything, Louis will always be loyal despite himself, and the other vampires all love him, but once he’s renounced vampirism he’s dead to them all, even though Lestat could be turned again! Sure, Louis won’t do it, but I thought someone would offer! So it’s very convenient Lestat has made one human friend to save his ass.
Favorites:
Lestat laying naked face down ass up on David’s rug for days 😂
Lestat immediately screws up having a body, he’s getting knocked out, he’s pratfalling, he’s injuring himself, getting himself horribly sick. Hilarious! I did get worried when he almost died at the hospital though.
Lestat and other vampires are always describing Louis as “the most human” at best, and like a sickly, weak piece of shit vampire that can’t begin to keep up with the rest at worst. But when Lestat as a human visits him, he’s immediately like, oh shit why did I ever think that?! Louis is so obviously not a human!
Mojo 💗
Least Favorites:
Anne didn’t let Lestat fuck that old man!! (Link fanfics if you got them 😛)
It’s not an immediate dislike, but disappointment? David, an old white man, takes over the already stolen body of a brown man. The death of this mechanic is not David’s fault, his taking over was the only way to save his own life. However, the old white man becomes a young hot brown man. . . it’s giving Get Out 😣
There is a missed opportunity in not having David experience not being white in the world, giving that old man a moment to reflect on his past privilege and to grow as a person in the few months before he’s turned. Idk, it’s not that big of a deal but I would have liked to see it.
And where’s @noncontextlestat at with the list of his crimes? Pretty sure they got SA on there already.
Smutt:
Lestat gets to fuck a nun, a nun who just happens to be on nun sabbatical where she’s free to sin a little, as a treat. Wowowowow.
Nonsense Meter:
Automatic 9/10 nonsense, I think the reasons are clear.
Gross limp human dick < vampire permaboner. ANNE!!
Misc:
Ok, I must have been reading wrong because it wasn’t until this book that I realized Anne Rice vampires don’t have sex. I thought the sex was implied this whole time 😂
Hear me out, when Daniel and Armand are snuggling in bed and then showering, I’m not supposed to think sex happened at some point? Lestat and Akasha rolling around in bed in some Greek Villa, I’m not supposed to think sex happened?!
When Claudia asks Louis what sex was like before, I thought she meant it like, “before you and my other dad started hating each other” and not “when you were human because you don’t do that as a vampire.” I’m not crazy, right?
Chapter 7 (Lestat talking to Louis): “You described my weeping in your miserable memoir in a scene which we both know did not take place!” WHAT SCENE?!

Hidden Agenda Ep 1
Well here we are. This isn't one of the offerings that I was really looking forward to this year, but I love the type of plot. What can I say? I'm a sucker for the tropiest shit, and I'm past the point where I feel like making apologies for my tastes.
I do wish it were coming out later though, because we have at least two messy, messy shows coming at us within the next couple of months (Dangerous Romance and Only Friends), and I could use what I expect will be a bit of mostly plotless fluff (I am getting very SIMM vibes already and that's exactly what that one was) to cut the tension from one (or both? Surely GMM wouldn't give us both at the same time, that'd just be madness and of course now that I've said it I want it desperately) of those.
Ah well.
Anyway, without further blathering, initial impressions:
Aw Louis. I missed his face. I didn't even know I would miss his face but it's good to see him on my screen again.
Heh, it sometimes just doesn't feel like a GMM BL without one of the J's. I love how they just tend to show up in everything. Or maybe we just tend to gravitate to the same projects - them for acting, me for watching. :D
Oh okay, so we're going right into an antagonistic sort of thing. I am not one of the people who dunks (heh) on his acting, but I hope Dunk loosens up as we go because he is way overdoing it here. He is more natural with the friends but every time he has to act annoyed it just sort of falls apart.
I kind of love AJ and Louis (I swear I will learn these character's names at some point) being the Bad Advice Duo. I think I'm going to enjoy this friend group.
The flashback to freshman year was very disjointed. At first I thought it was a preview for next week lol. Granted it might have been a watcher error.
Joong's Joke is like the dude from SIMM. Like, exactly. I guess he's comfortable in that kind of role but I was hoping for something a little different. For all I've said about Dunk thus far I do think Zo is at least a different character than the one Dunk played in the last drama. At least this time he's not manic pixie dream...was it a nerd in that one? Hell if I remember, all I know is that everyone wanted him and it annoyed me a lot. Worst trope. And thankfully this one doesn't seem to be heading in that direction.
Next week we're gonna get even more tropes. Including a pratfall because Thai BLs love their pratfalls. And I will learn all the character's names. Or at least the friends.
I'm probably going to stick with this. It's not doing anything revolutionary as of yet but the tropes it's using are all tropes I enjoy, so. And I'm a little interested in the whole debate club backdrop. Hopefully it will bring up some interesting things. Plus I want to see Aou and Boom together. I've been waiting for this pairing since Midnight Museum, dammit.

this video was posted about two years and two months after the destruction of July
*filming from a distance the camera captures vash sitting in the crook of a saguaro cactus's arm, about twenty feet off the ground*
vash: now that I've got myself comfy here I'd like to say--hey, wait. I think if I stretch a little I can grab some fruit! Have you ever had saguaro fruit? 'Cause it's great and you can even make jam--
*vash stretches too far and falls off his perch down to the base of the cactus where he lays collapsed in the dust for awhile*
*the camera cuts, the scene is the same except vash is sitting closer to the camera, the cactus behind him*
vash, giggling and eating fruit: it's been so long since I made one of these videos I was wondering how to break the ice. I guess a pratfall is a good, in-character start. Worth it!
*video cuts to the same scene but filmed at a later time of day since the sun has started to set*
vash: interrupting myself to remind you to never climb a cactus it's a dumb thing to do and I'm only allowed to do it because I am professionally dumb. If that had gone wrong I wouldn't be able to sit down for, probably, the rest of my life. Anywa--
*the scene returns to the previous time of day*
vash: Here I am in Arizona. Or California. Um, or Mexico. I came here to visit this saguaro and kind of found my way by pigeon homing instincts, haha. The last time I was here it only had one arm but now it's got three, which is neat. Um.
*for a few moments vash taps his fingers together and glances around awkwardly. Finally he slumps forward, head in his hands, takes a deep breath, and sits up again*
Vash, with a big grin: I never intended to make any more videos, actually. Didn't feel right after stuff happened, y'know. Kind of awkward, right, considering? Um, but, it was pointed out to me that this might be a good way of letting people know what's up with me. Specific people, not all of you, sorry. But if you're watching, FBI, hi!
*another cut and the shadows have lengthened noticeably. Vash has spread a cloth out on the ground and has the disassembled pieces of his gun laid out and is cleaning them*
vash, putting on a fresh grin: sorry 'bout that, I got distracted. Got saguaro fruit on my gun and coat when I fell. It was a sticky situation.
*vash pauses for a beat*
vash: that was to give you time to laugh. I hope you took advantage of it. Chances are you just imagined kicking me in the shin, though. Um, haha, I don't have anything particular to say. Hello! I'm fine! Or, alive, at least. My dignity and my backside are badly bruised
*vash pauses*
vash: that was to give my absent cameraman or a certain short-tempered lady a chance to say I have no dignity, to which I reply: what's it to you?
*pause*
vash: you kicked me again, didn't you? What am I, your personal slapstick clown? Why, I oughta come over there and . . . haha, yeah, I oughta . . .
*clicking the last pieces of the gun together vash turns to look back at the sky which is turning pink and red. He continues to look at it as he speaks*
vash: Getting late, I should get ready to hit the hay.
*vash grabs the phone and his face comes into focus*
vash: oh, and, I'm gonna watch the sunset from the cactus. If you don't hear from me I'm probably stuck up there. And . . . it's not a promise, but . . . see you guys later.
*video ends*
(yeah this video is for Lina and her grandmother Sheryl)

Extremely unfair that I sit down with pen and paper to take notes and the episode doesn’t feature My Main Man! In true fandom fashion, I will none the less proceed to make my episode reaction post all about him...
I foresee that the giant expanded cast of regulars is going to trip us up often with these either or situations - I deeply resent being made to choose between Nate and Trent. (HI TRENT!!! My favourite little smirky shit with the HAIR. You can vaguely saunter downwards on my screen any time you want, I have missed you!)
Look, Roy and Trent are my two blorbos, and getting extended interaction with them, and backstory, and deep nonverbal communication of various emotions was just delightful. And because we weren’t shown a pin, I am going to headcanon that Roy can burst balloons with his bare hands, like the animal he is. James Lance is clearly having the time of his life leaning into the comic elements of his character, and I love how ridiculous he lets him be.
Speaking of unexpected backstory... Rebecca was a bartender?! Where the fuck did that come from? She clearly and canonically comes from money. I thought she might have been a business manager of some kind, associated with Richmond, which is how she met Rupert, but this makes her qualifications to run (not just own) a football club all the more shaky. Also now she’s established that she was willing to help Rupert cheat on his wife... I have no idea why she would then be so shocked that she was in turn cheated on. And I’m sure Rupert used the same tactics with his bartender affair that he got Leslie to help him with later, so again, just how deluded has Rebecca been?
But since I’m talking about Rebecca anyway, let me drag this back to Nate, and how difficult it is to watch a show that attempts both comedy and pathos. Because it gives me whiplash being told to selectively suspend my disbelief for some situations and not for others. It’s like when you watch slapstick comedy - you know its ok to laugh at the pie in the face because EVERYONE is going to end up with that pie, and there is the shared trust that no one is actually hurt. But if a theatrical play has a haha pie moment with one character, and then flips to another where someone stumbles and then starts crying from the pain, I’m going to feel like shit for having been primed to laugh at what I thought I was told was a pratfall.
Rebecca, more than any other character on the show, has being shown doing things that get excused because of her position as beautiful, white, girlboss. Back in season 1, she walked into the locker room without knocking, surprising two players with their pants down (in contrast to Keeley, who we see asking for consent to enter right in the first episode). And now - she literally committed sexual harassment.
Bit ironic given the current British transphobic scaremongering around bathrooms, but yeah, stalking someone into a bathroom of the opposite gender and getting close to them while they are urinating, then literally negging them and mocking the smell of their urine is - sexual harassment.
And being asked to let it go because Zava seems fine with it is like letting go of Nate kissing Keeley because she said it was ok afterwards. I have been on the fence about whether to think of that as sexual harassment or not because ‘kissing someone without explicit verbal permission’ is one of those highly cultural context dependant gestures that sometimes people are happy about, and sometimes are genuinely ok writing off as an innocent misread of body language. But I certainly haven’t just laughed it off, and the show has shown Nate to have agonised about his offence afterwards. Will Rebecca even spare a second thought to the gravity of all her wrongdoings?
I have more to say, but I need to do a rewatch with subtitles on to catch all the dialogues I missed. (Is it me, or did Jamie’s accent suddenly become, like his hair, even weirder?)
Meanwhile to conclude with our regular spot of shallow aesthetic appreciation - how happy I was to see the Hot Photographer Lady from Keeley’s Vogue shoot back! Her name is Janette and she’s played by the radiant Miranda Shamiso, And I love her.

Villain Breakdown: Malekith
This movie isn't really about Malekith. Much like Iron Man 3, it has other subject matter it wants to talk about. It sends Thor on a personal journey that needs no villain, but the movie must have one so Malekith fills the role.
He's not particularly charismatic, which is unfortunate. But he doesn't necessarily need to be, since he's just here to give Thor and the Science Team someone to fight. The bigger problem is that he barely gets to do much fighting.
Kurse gets two separate action scenes to show off how brutish and strong he is, as well as some solid choreography. As mentioned in my breakdown of their fight, Malekith spends the bulk of the climax pratfalling through portals instead of doing cool things with the limitless reality warping power he's absorbed.
I can forgive him for not having a very interesting personality. But I have a hard time getting over him not being a very interesting fighter. Ultimately, the Convergence itself makes for a more entertaining villain than Malekith does.
At the end of the day, he's little more than a boss fight. And he doesn't even do a good job of that.

Some said Unforgotten Night dragged on at the beginning, but I didn't feel like it did? I actually enjoyed getting the backstory. It seems like some just wanted the BDSM scenes and that was it.
I liked the backstory too! And I really enjoyed seeing Kim's family and how supportive and darling they are and how much he's loved and how many people he has in his life and all the things he does and I suspect we'll get more of Kamol as well. I like establishing backgrounds and family and who they are. And it worked well for me! I want to see Kim happy and I want to see him get real fucked up because I know he has a good support system and we know Kamol doesn't give a fuck about morality and it's great.
Now they just have to stick to these notes. Keep the characters serious. No pratfalls, no jokes, no turning one character into a caricature, no turning on character into an Always Right Guy, no one's emotions subsumed for the other person, no one turned into a joke so no one takes his pain seriously.
I need Unforgotten Night to be better than that. Not good. Oh, lordie, not good. But better than that.

i was tagged by @whovianacefan to list five comfort characters.
thanks for the tag!
sara sidle (csi): 20+ years and this girl still fascinates and inspires me. raw, messy, wickedly intelligent, a bleeding heart, a closet romantic, awkward, wry, and genuine, there is just so much to unpack with her; multivalence that invites exploration. at this point, i’m pretty certain that i’ll be writing fic about her until i die (and not just because i’m a chronically slow updater). her complexity, her grit, her rough edges, her commitment to being kind—everything about her interests me.
gil grissom (csi): i mean, lbr, grissom and sara are a package deal to me. he is every bit as well-drawn and engrossing as his wife. his arc was the arc of the show. despite his reputation for being aloof and “unfeeling,” his humanity is what really set csi apart from all of its competitors; helped it to transcend its genre. whoever would have thought that an early 00s procedural would offer up one of the most emotionally nuanced male leads since austen? this man contains multitudes. he will also always have a special place in my heart for being the first television character i ever recognized as being acespec while i was figuring out my own orientation.
juliet burke (lost): there are some characters who just tick all your boxes, and juliet is it for me. such a gorgeous study in contradictions. whether she is sassing jack about sandwiches, handcuffing herself to kate in the jungle, playing the long game to undermine ben and get off the island, or connecting with sawyer across universes, i can’t help but root for her. endlessly compelling in every possible timeline. the beating heart of some of my favorite scenes in all of television.
abby lockhart (er): there are lots of er characters i love and would count as favorites, but abby is just special. good on the writers for letting her be as messed-up and feral as she is at times, and good on them for letting her truly work to grow and heal and flourish (not always linearly but steadily over time). she is so incredibly real in a way that few television characters ever get the chance to be. her arc across nine seasons is an absolute masterpiece.
john truman carter iii (er): pretty much the original blorbo. when i first started watching er as a kid, i liked human disaster med student carter because he was the show’s comic relief. that boy can take a pratfall like nobody’s business. as i got older, i started to appreciate more and more his good-heartedness, his loneliness, how his deep survivor’s guilt—regarding too many people he has loved and lost in his life—motivates him to give so much of himself, how he matures over time; how his development isn’t always straightforward or upward. while i admit his storyline in the later seasons isn’t always to my tastes (and what they do to his love and family life is, imo, pretty unconscionable), i have always adored his core characterization. sweet-faced, do‐gooder baby doc, indeed.
per usual, mine is the blog where tagging games go to die, but if you see this post and you want to play, go ahead and pretend i tagged you!

Thinking about Pact/Pale Strawhats, very rough ideas. Spoilers for all probably.
ZORO: Lost Swordsman, emphasis on Lost. Originally just a regular peter-pan-esk Lost Boy on a 'ninja's vs pirates' path where you had to manipulate and set up fights to progress, a group of finders managed to break the path by permanently killing Lost to manipulate the bracket to be smaller so it was easier to get through. Kid Zoro was forced to be the 'greatest swordsman' and then easily defeated by the path runner so many times the path lost enough power to give away boons, collapsing around Zoro who only survived by swearing an Oath to the universe that he would earn his title for real. Haven't decided if Kuina fits in better as a path runner here and Zoro exists as some sort of wolf/mirror/whatever entity made on the path for her as a worthy opponent, or if she would just be another Lost.
NAMI: Former aware turned elementalist? Can't get too much into her deal without getting into the Fishmen question.
USSOP: Blackguard of the group, the liar. Kuro was a practitioner trying to use magic to rise in innocent status, karma used Ussop as a tool to balance things out, and it left him aware. Maintains innocence as he's still scared of whatever regular thing the universe hides magic stuff as. Uses magic items and guns as he can't actually Practice.
SANJI: Bogyman - "Blackleg". Sanji gets forgotten in the basement and without any human connections, gets claimed by the abyss. He latches onto an outdated form of chivalry and romance and the need to feed people as ways to crawl out, turning into a sort of urban legend about a man in black suit that kicks men to death who violate his personal principles: hurting women or wasting food.
CHOPPER: Divine Reindeer. Regular reindeer that ate a bit of divine essence and became a very small, very nervous godling(? similar to Tashlet in Pale) with access to Creation, manifesting in his multiple forms. Originally a familiar to Hiriluk, using the stability of the familiar ritual to stop Chopper from changing constantly form and Hiriluk trying to stave off his fatal illness with Choppers divinity.
ROBIN: Originally I thought Diabolist (Demon child, whole world wants her dead, suffering) but the aesthetics of a Horror fit so much better. Has a similar deal to the Horror gal in Pale, only Robin escaped her family after trying to subtly leak how their practice worked to the world. She obscured her Self from tracking attempts by hiding in Baroque Works. Crocodile is a Collector of people similar to Bristow. Maybe her family used Demons to Destroy the memory of how exactly they pulled off the Horror trick?
FRANKY: Hyde/Technomancer. He is the guy that Essentials warns you about, trying to combine Familiars and Demesnes and Implements into the same thing. Thousand Sunny is a mad max sort of train-bus-camper, which he powered up with every single one of the three main rituals, forcing himself to Hyde into Battle Franky if he wants to get anything done outside of it (Or maybe Hyde back into Cutty Flam, with Frankly bound to the Thousand Sunny?)
BROOK: He's just like that
JINBE: ??? Honestly I don't know how to resonate Oda Fishmen Allegory with Wildbow Others Allegory without pratfalling down a metaphorical set of stairs where every stair is a landmine. Oni?
LUFFY: He's also just like that
