Mizu was wrong to let Akemi be taken because they both deserve better
First, a confession. When I saw this for the first time:
Tumblr media
I was relieved. I knew that was what Mizu was going to say and I felt like it's what I would have said in that situation too.
When Akemi does this:
Tumblr media
I cringed, because if we know anything about Mizu, it's that she (1) isn't quick to make friends (though to be fair, even though Akemi did try to kill Mizu, so did Taigen - multiple times! - and look how that turned out lol), and (2) doesn't take orders.
So when Akemi and Ringo and later Taigen get angry at Mizu, are they being unfair?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sure, Mizu isn't obligated to treat Akemi - or Taigen or Ringo or anybody else - nicely, or to serve them, or to be honorable, or be a hero to them, or whatever. No human being is obligated to any other human being. We all have the choice to do whatever we want to anybody else. But the point of flawed characters in storytelling is the tension between those characters and their potential. Their growth into someone who can choose the higher, harder path, who chooses to be obligated to others, who chooses kindness and compassion.
Because Mizu's problem isn't revenge. Nobody is preaching at Mizu that revenge isn't the answer. Her circumstances do suck, her life has been incredibly unfair, she is marginalized, and as far as we and Mizu know for most of the season, she is a child born of violence and no one is saying that that violence doesn't deserve to be repaid in kind.
Mizu's problem is isolation. And the fact that she thinks she has no responsibility toward her fellow human beings, because her hatred of her own circumstances and her having no life outside of her quest devours everything else. This is a problem because it turns Mizu into the worst version of herself. A version that hurts the people who like Mizu, the people who care about her.
Practically, Mizu has just taken on an entire army almost by herself. She's hurt. She's exhausted. If she were to defend Akemi now, it'd be yet ANOTHER fight, this time against horsed and armored samurai.
But that's not the reason Mizu gives Ringo. Mizu's ability or willingness to fight isn't even on her mind. All she says is, "She's better off."
"She's better off" is Mizu deciding what's best for Akemi. Akemi's entire story is about her being a caged bird longing to fly free.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One after the other, every man and woman in Akemi's life makes her decisions for her. She has to grovel and smile prettily and lie through her teeth just for the chance to be heard. Mizu judges Akemi for being a rich princess who isn't being more grateful for what she has, all without understanding Akemi's situation, and without any curiosity for why Akemi feels the way she does. From Akemi's perspective, Mizu is just one more person (one more man!) in a long lineup who ignores Akemi's wishes and (casually!) makes a decision for her that impacts Akemi's life greatly.
In the end, even Seki concludes that Akemi should get to decide what's best for Akemi. What others think that Akemi SHOULD want does not matter compared to what Akemi wants for her own life. As Madame Kaji said - Madame Kaji, who despite calling out the weirdness of Akemi's situation as well as the childishness of her decision to run away - is the only person Akemi meets who doesn't try to make decisions for Akemi, but instead only challenges Akemi to work for and be worthy of what she wants - she needs to decide what she wants for her own fucking self, and then take it.
Mizu being born female does not make her automatically wiser for letting Akemi be taken, and it does not preclude her from having a hand in giving Akemi back to her jailers. A patriarchy that Mizu knows full well would stop Mizu from achieving her own goals if she didn't present as male.
Mizu is still understandable here. She just had to kill Kinuyo, a disabled girl sold by her father into prostitution, a girl in a situation so far beyond Akemi's worst imaginings that I can practically feel Mizu's world being rocked just by comparing them in her mind the way she most likely is. That still doesn't make it right for Mizu to let Akemi be carried off to be sold into marriage by her father against her wishes. Those "good options" Mizu thinks Akemi has don't exist, no more than they ever existed for Mizu. Akemi and Mizu both have to get creative, make the best of their circumstances, take dangerous risks, and break rules in order to have any control over their own lives.
Even on my first watch, when at first I thought that Mizu had made the right decision and that Akemi was being unreasonable, Akemi screaming Mizu's name while being dragged, LITERALLY DRAGGED, back to her father was haunting as hell.
Mizu had the power to help Akemi, and simply chose not to.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mizu lets Akemi be taken, Akemi who has just begun to trust Mizu. Mizu calls Ringo weak and quickly - seemingly easily - turns her back on him. Mizu values her quest over Taigen's life, after Taigen has endured days of torture to protect her, and she not only risks his life in the process, but doesn't tell him that Akemi is engaged to someone else, or that she came looking for Taigen, or that she is in danger.
Mizu's sword breaks because it is too brittle. Too pure. Too singleminded. Mizu only melts down the meteorite metal when she mixes the metal with objects from parts of her life that have nothing to do with her quest. Objects from the people she cares about, and who care about her.
All I'm saying is - Mizu doesn't have to be a hero. But she is the better version of herself when she reaches out to help and connect with others. When she's just a decent, kinder human being. And I think that's what this story is telling us that we should want for Mizu.

there’s a special place in hell for people who take the time and go through the effort of leaving negative comments on fanfics, like-- what is wrong with you, what is LEGITIMATELY wrong with you? I’m so angry and so devastated on behalf of everyone who has been harrassed like this and who is going through something like this right now. There’s no excuse for shitty behavior - if you intentionally leave a hurtful comment on something someone created and put out there for other people’s enjoyement, for free, after spending probably HOURS if not WEEKS or MONTHS or longer on it, you’re an incredibly shitty, disgusting, miserable waste of space of a person be better

kink dynamics are not the same as top/bottom dynamics and kink dynamics MUST be enthusiastically consensual. otherwise you’re not participating in kink, you are being abusive.
additionally, in the real world, clearly defined top/bottom dynamics are rarely ever discrete and rarely ever explicitly discussed. queer flirting in the wild often looks like two (or sometimes more) people interacting and feeling out what kind of connection there is and figuring things out as you go with communication and consent.
internet tenderqueers need to shut the fuck up, listen, and go touch some grass before they open their mouths and show their whole ass online.

As the West and the US in particular keeps leaning on the whole "Israel has the right to defend itself" argument I keep wanting to ask them,
at what point do Palestinians get the right to defend themselves?
And of course the unspoken answer is never. No amount of Palestinian suffering will ever be enough for the West to see their fighting back as anything other than "terrorism".
The logic seems to be that even one dead Israeli is justification for whatever horrors the Israeli government feels like visiting on Palestinians, and that no matter how much the Israeli government does to them, how many innocents are killed, no Palestinian violence in response is ever justified.
At least 30,000 Gazans have been killed in five months (almost certainly a horrific undercount, as it does not include those under the rubble or those who have been killed by starvation or disease or cold). Civilians are routinely detained, stripped, humiliated, tortured. There is evidence that sexual assault of Palestinians, women and men both, by Israeli forces is a regular occurrence. 2 million people have been forcibly displaced, their homes destroyed, and are being systematically starved. And yet if any one of those people dares to have a violent response, to try to fight back against their deliberate annihilation, they will be called a terrorist.
Kids throwing stones at tanks are called terrorists. Or their deaths are justified because "well they just would have grown up to be a terrorist."
Armored soldiers shooting unarmed, starving people who are desperately trying to get food for themselves and their families are "defending themselves".
The double standard is so obvious and yet people are still trying to "both-sides" the matter as if there is anything resembling equal footing here.

Po and Tigress's relationship is so funny because they're written like a queerbait couple but like. its a male character and a female character. like theres some stuff that is obviously written in a way that can be interpreted as romantic but like the movie never actually backs it up with any further development of a romance between the two. there's always that plausible deniability so they dont actually have to follow up on it.

I really want Christmas season to feel like Christmas season again this year. it hasn't for a couple years, I've kinda breezed right through it, but I want to try and focus on it this year.

I just don't understand people who feel the need to leave negative comments on fics?? You don't like the characterisation? You don't like the way things are going? You're not a fan??
That's fine! That's absolutely fine!! We all have different tastes, I get that!!
But why post a comment about it though??
Tumblr media
Why would you say this?????? What makes you think that's okay???????

Idk if this is the right place to say this but I hate how watcher (the social media at least) tries to associate their stuff with Taylor swift. I genuinely cringe every time 😭
I mean to be fair all the fans started doing that first. When they announced Puppet History s6 would release today ALL the fans kept commenting on the post about how today was also the day Taylor Swift was releasing smth. So at this point they're just capitalizing on it lol I mean I would too honestly

can i say i love what you did with sokka like. so many hakoda adopts zuko fics just straight up ignore him or make his character all goofy but you rlly went into how he was feeling and it felt realistic. bc if i was him, i would be jealous of zuko too especially if i had it in my head that my dad abandoned me and then just picked up some other kid who I thought was better than me. he rlly was just a mess of emotions- did i know what he was gonna do ever?? no. couldn't tell whether he was gonna keep ignoring hakoda, cry, or just explode at him, and i think that unpredictableness rlly fits w him and the whole Teenage Boy Emotions he's got going on as well (bc im just saying he switched up from on zuko SO drastically like he went from hating him to crushing hard and if that just isn't teenage hormones and angst)
OMG THANK YOU FOR THIS I WANT TO KISS YOU like one of the few times ive had genuine rebuttal from taob by enough people that it's like A Thing (like literally only a handful but im a very insecure writer so it doesn't take much LMAO) is when hakoda sat sokka down and - god forbid - pointed out that the love he had for his actual son was different and incomparible to any love he might have grown for some stray FIRE NATION (<- feel like some people forgot the relevance that still has) kid. and like i had some people calling sokka 'annoying' or 'mean' or 'unfair' for his reactions but like?? im trying to write him as a real person here and i promise u most people in his scenario would've kicked off WAY more than he ever did lmao

I'm honestly so disappointed that she gets to return to the show, especially by being a partner to one of the most beloved characters
I won't be able to disconnect Marisol from her and her transphobic bs
I really am so tired of things like this
This show has such a large queer fanbase and it just pisses me off
This show is my safe haven I don't want a fucking transphobe on it

Asoiaf violence bad or Barry violence bad?
hmm this is an interesting question actually!! i dont think their views on violence are in conflict really— both view violence as deeply systemic and the structural foundation of their respective worlds, both take a lot of care to explore misogynistic violence and the gendered nature of abuse, both link the construct of masculinity with war/violence and i’d call both at least somewhat anti-war works. barry is ofc doing different stuff though because so much of it is about modern media culture and how we consume violence as viewers, which asoiaf obviously cant do. asoiaf does have more of an interest in “righteous” violence too, even though 99% of it is complicated and challenged by the narrative. you couldnt do something like no chance no choice in barry, it’s way too cynical. barry is so focused and pared down (sometimes to its detriment) and asoiaf is so massively expansive that it’s hard to make a comparison. asoiaf is a big huge conversation with ten million people talking over each other, asking huge and fairly general questions with no answers. barry is one declarative sentence over and over again. barry feels like the same vibe as quentyn’s chapters, probably the most nihilistic grrm gets. good thing i love quentyn’s chapters QUENT SWEEP. anyway theyre both great. cant choose. i love that people call asoiaf grimdark it literally looks like a disney fairy tale compared to prestige tv

I saw one specific critique about ttpd that rubbed me the wrong way, and it was that "taylor has gotten too comfortable in her fame so she's not even trying to change her sound that's why the album is so shitty"
first of all, artists don't have to change their sounds each fucking album. yes, she's been specifically doing that but only because she's wanted to play around with her sound.
second of all, tell me you only see her as a product without telling me you only see her as a product. I don't really care to pay attention to her love life, that's not why i like her music, but you have some fucking gal thinking she owes you anything at all. this album was very clearly about losing someone after a long term relationship and how the breakdown of it all affected her mentally
she's allowed to write songs that help process a difficult moment in her life. she's allowed to be sad and she's allowed to say it.
third of all, not everything under the sun is going to be for or about you and that is okay.
parasocial relationships are getting so terrifying that you're forgetting that these people you claim to love and be a fan of are actual human beings
