Honestly? Today was an amazing day! Exhausting, stressful at points, but so much fun. Chatting with and helping all the people pouring into our park to watch the eclipse, scrambling to restock the gift shop because ice and firewood and refreshments and tees and mugs were flying off the shelves faster than we could put them out, looking out and seeing people having fun, kids stumbling in to use our bathroom all sunburnt and worn out but visibly content...
It kinda reaffirmed that I'm finally, finally where I belong. I enjoyed certain aspects of my work while in retail, but this is easily the most passionate I've ever felt about a job since I did work-study for the Communications department in college. I always thought in the back of my mind that a career in tourism sounded nice. Today I realized with a sort of finality that it's really, truly what I wanna do with my life.
I dunno. Having been in a place for the past several months (and frankly most of my adult life) where I wasn't even sure I'd make it to 30, having something so concrete to look forward to feels nice.

been chewing over my helen k wint cord thoughts for the past 24 hours (my actual serious thoughts. not just my "lesbian cord elam hot please please please wife me" thoughts) and I can't stop thinking about how different a female cord elam hits. particularly when it comes to the trial scene I was feeling a very different vibe watching her trying to take a stand against this miscarriage of justice and getting told essentially that she doesn't know what she's talking about and should shut the fuck up. like don't get me wrong it's always been an uncomfortable moment especially bc cord in this revival has already always been played by actors of colour (and i'm pretty sure specifically black actors) but having the actor also be a woman is definitely a notable additional layer to that. pretty much every version of revival cord has had a rough deal but with helen k wint it feels like there's now even more that she'd have had to overcome to be in a position of authority in this community and even more excuse for the other characters to dismiss her as soon as it's convenient for them

There's an ac unit in our room and it's a lot so she's very, very happy inside my blanket making biscuits. It's a good morning and it's the first time it's felt like a truly good morning in a long time.

happy sleepover saturday!!!!! if you could only ever watch one of these for the rest of your life would it be sexy oklahoma or don giovanni (i think it's. aioux? production? your special one, you know)
also!! here is spitfire & the girls
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A CRUEL AND VICIOUS CHOICE. they are like two sides of the same coin to me.... Well considering i am literally watching the latter right now,
also OMG what fantastic beasts!! Girls Night
[ask meme]
#the dramaturgical parallels between don giovanni and oklahoma have gone unexplored for TOO LONG#also you have to introduce me to the gerbils they are new beasties to me#i like that they are all always in a pile. like the weird sisters from macbeth#ask meme#sleepover saturday#sasha answers#domesticatedanimals#ty jack beloved <3 <3#living up to your url tonight lol#in more seriousness it's a very tough choice bc both are so heavily dependent on the cast to me#and the Experience of watching#bc sexy oklahoma in its Prime Form to me was broadway with the immersive thrust stage and the cast#it suffered a bit in the move to touring (although the differences were juicy to chew on)#meanwhile the aix don g i've of course only ever seen the videos not live#(gd. if i'd seen this thing live LOL)#and the 2017 aix video not only has an Amazing cast but literally the most gorgeous and effective filmmaking i've seen in an opera recordin#it's just gorgeous to watch. so well lit and shot and edited...#AND there's actually a replica/revival production of this staging out of. barcelona i think it was? somewhere in spain.#with a different cast as well as Much simpler (and. worse) camera and editing work#and it's Also on youtube haha#and. ngl! it kind of sucks! at least in comparison to the grand high that is 2017 aix lol#it's just so much flatter and blander. which is so interesting to me because i think the staging itself is SO good#but the effect doesn't hit right without the right cast...and in video without good camerawork#so it's Really hard to choose one or the other for me lol

Was making some key frames for a Many A New Day lipsync, then I decided to do this instead.
I-I mean, uh, hey, look at this cool old video I found in my basement! Totally real! 100%! After Effects? Don't know her!
(Minor update to Laurey's design btw, she's now a springer spaniel. Cavalier kings just aren't farm-y enough!)
[Image ID: an illustration of a black-and-white springer spaniel, singing (as shown by yellow captions) "Never have I wandered through the rye," despite the fact that she's doing just that. The dog, Laurey, wears not only a pink plaid bandanna, but also an expression of dramatic frustration as she struts through the tall rye with her head held high. Wow, that rhymed! Anyway, beyond the rye field, a red barn sits next to a big gray silo. Green hills with white fences are just barely visible. The image is crunchy and saturated, to match the appearance of a VHS capture. End ID]

A very impolite question: why can’t you exactly explain where you’re from? 🤔
I get this question all of the time because people try to pin down my accent sometimes and it's hard cause it changes ever so slightly so I don't find this question rude at all.
I moved around a lot as a kid and that kind of followed me into adulthood. The easiest answer is that I'm from Maryland because that's where I spent most of my life but a version of the long answer is:
Born - Colorado Early childhood - Iowa/Texas/Maryland Middle School/High School - Maryland College - Oklahoma (this is where I picked up the southern accent)
I've lived in more places since then but I'll spare you my adulthood moving around because I'm still recovering from all of my recent moves. I've landed pretty nicely in the Chicago area and I'm not planning on leaving any time soon. I like it here. I like my job, I like the people, I like my life here. So if you or anyone else is in the Chicago area, feel free to hit me up to go grab coffee or drinks or something!

So happy for Alexa's win! But holy shit - 654 points divided by 56 voting states and territories means she got 11.67 points from each on average!! The K-stan forces are very real!

My very last comic for The Nib! End of an era! Transcription below the cut. instagram / patreon / portfolio / etsy / my book / redbubble
The first event I went to with GENDER QUEER was in NYC in 2019 at the Javits Center.
So many of the people who came to my signing were librarians, and so many of them said the same thing: "I know exactly who I want to give this to!" Maia: "Thank you for helping readers find my book!" While working on the book, I was genuinely unsure if anyone outside of my family and close friends would read it. But the early support of librarians and two American Library Association awards helped sell two print runs in first year.
Since then, GENDER QUEER been published in 8 languages, with more on the way: Spanish, Czech, Polish, French, Italian, Norwegian, Portugese and Dutch.
It has also been the most banned book in the United States for the past two years. The American Library Association has tracked an astronomical increase in book challenges over the past few years. Most of these challenges are to books with diverse characters and LGBTQ themes. These challenges are coming unevenly across the US, in a pattern that mirrors the legislative attacks on LGBTQ people. The Brooklyn Public Library offered free eCards to anyone in the US aged 13-21, in an effort to make banned books more available to young readers. A teacher in Norman, Oklahoma gave her students the QR code for the free eCard and lost her job. Summer Boismeir is now working for the Brooklyn Public Library. Hoopla and Libby/Overdrive, apps used to access digital library books, are now banned in Mississippi to anyone under 18. Some libraries won’t allow anyone under 18 to get any kind of library card without parental permission. When librarians in Jamestown, Michigan refused to remove GENDER QUEER and several other books, the citizens of the town voted down the library’s funding in the fall 2022 election. Without funding, the library is due to close in mid-2024. My first event since covid hit was the American Library Association conference in June 2022 in Washington, DC. Once again, the librarians in my signing line all had similar stories for me: “Your book was challenged in our district" "It was returned to the shelf!" "It was removed from the shelf..." "It was moved to the adult section."
Over and over I said: "Thank you. Thank you for working so hard to keep my book in your library. I’m sorry you had to defend it, but thank you for trying, even if it didn't work." We are at a crossroads of freedom of speech and censorship. The future of libraries, both publicly funded and in schools, are at stake. This is massively impacting the daily lives of librarians, teachers, students, booksellers, and authors around the country. In May 2023, I read an article from the Washington Post analyzing nearly 1000 of the book challenges from the 2021-2022 school year. I was literally on route to a festival to talk about book bans when I read a startling statistic. 60% of the 1000 book challenges were submitted by just 11 people. One man alone was responsible for 92 challenges. These 11 people seem to have made submitting copy-cat book challenges their full-time hobby and their opinions are having an outsized ripple effect across the nation. WE NEED TO MAKE THE VOICES SUPPORTING DIVERSE BOOKS AND OPPOSING BOOK BANS EVEN LOUDER. If you are able too, show up for your library and school board meetings when book challenges are debated. Send supportive comments and emails about the Pride book display and Drag Queen story hours. If you see a display you like– for Banned Book Week, AAPI Month, Black History Month, Disability Awareness Month, Jewish holidays, Trans Day of Remembrance– compliment a librarian! Make sure they feel the love stronger than the hate <3

Once had a lot of time to daydream lately and I’ve got two fan fictions pretty well outlined. It’s been a long time since I’ve tried writing but with so much of the planning done I’m tempted to try again. The only issue is the one I want to write is set in a real place in California and so much of it is based on my personal experiences… in Oklahoma and I worry it’s going to be really obviously wrong even if I go for a very hazy setting.

Learned that during my absence at work, one of the kitchen ladies that is super happy, hippy like lady did a 180. Started violently accusing a coworker of being troublesome, but could NOT give one example of what problems she's having from her. Started complaining about another coworker owing her money for car rides, except previously when said coworker tried to pay her in full she refused the money and told her to buy her some smokes instead. AND she tried to get a third coworker to give her a lock of her hair (coworker is half black and has previously voiced her dislike of people touching her hair, this person knows she hates it but still asked anyways) so that definitely did not go over well. Apparently she wanted the lock for "witchy purposes," which it turns out she admitted she was making a doll of her. IDK where any of this came from in the week that I was absent....OH and she apparently had a "vision" that a coworker was going to get fired, and named the person specifically, while standing next to a separate person holding their arm the whole time she experienced this "premonition." Turns out nobody was getting fired...she just quit lmao. Like...God damn I hope she's okay because all of this came completely from left field...but she's refusing any help from anyone that's reached out. Hhhh
