Over and over again, I fall in love with the Good Omens fandom. Everyone is so creative. Like, all the fan art? Yes, there’s a lot of art that is depicting Crowley and Azirapahle as portrayed by David Tennant and Michael Sheen (which is amazing), but there’s also a TON of art where they don’t look like them. Instead they look like original characters. Or the book descriptions. Or like women. Or with a million eyes. And everyone seems to have embraced them as gender fluid or non-binary so excitingly. Gender is never their angst. It’s always their power. That’s so cool. And body positivity. I will always want more Aziraphale in lingerie (or maybe Crowley in lingerie)! And I don’t know how to articulate it properly yet, but there’s something super amazing about people loving Beelzebub. There is sweet and beautiful and amazing fan art of an androgynous character who is a mess. Like flies and acne and torn clothes and stuff. And we love them for it. That’s like... wow... Like... fan artists are so amazing. I’m emotional.

Something I've been thinking about of late about two of my favourite actors...
Michael Sheen. Not, fundamentally, a particularly unusual looking man. This isn't to say that he looks boring or unattractive, because that is obviously not the case, just that there's nothing particularly odd about his features. His forehead is kinda high and he has a slightly funny nose, with a turned up end and flared nostrils you kind of end up being able to see up a lot of the time. That's really it though. Makes him tough to draw in a stylised manner because there's not lots to hang a caricature off of. It's the same problem people had back in like, season 3 of Doctor Who where no one had any trouble making the Doctor look like David Tennant but drawing the Master to look like John Simm was a pain in the arse.
Then you have Burn Gorman, who is comprised entirely of distinctive features. The geometry of his face is bizarre, cheekbones higher up than they should be, pointy little pixie chin and a jaw that's at right angles, a mouth that's so wide and can open so far I'm not sure that the whole "You can put a light bulb in your mouth but you'd have to break it to get it back out again" thing actually applies to him, an incongruously cute little nose... Depending on what angle you look at him from he can look like a frog, a fish, an otter, a neanderthal throwback, or strangely androgynously pretty. He's like a small subspecies of whatever sort of cryptid the Mikkelsen brothers are. Him and Benedict Cumberbatch look like Monster Factory creations with the sliders pushed in opposite directions.
I feel like I should point out at this point that I'm not saying Burn is unattractive either, the man is beautiful.
But then, you look at their respective careers... And, one of them has been cast as a vampire, a werewolf, an android, a computer program, an angel, the voice of a sentient planet... And it's really not the one you'd think. If you were going to look at the two of them and guess which one would have a resume that makes him sound like a male Tilda Swinton, Michael is not the one I think you'd necessarily go for.
(I have made a similar point to this before but I was talking to @angryangryowl about it again last night)

“Well look at him, that’s literally you in 40 years!”
I’ve decided to make a whole separate post after seeing this by @hedonistbyheart
Because it resonated so much with me, and I figured it deserves a separate post.
And I literally have created yet another tumblr account (because I thought that there won’t be any stories that would prompt me to come back to this lair of fandoms, but oh well) for the purpose to write this here; so bear with me.
I got to know about Good Omens just last week. It was after my dad said that there’s some new series where “one character really reminds me of you”.
So we started watching it. And with each passing minute of the first episode it was becoming more and more obvious that my dad was right about that one character; the latter did remind me and my dad of myself so much, up to the point of it all being plainly ridiculous; dad kept saying “Well look at him, that’s literally you in 40 years!”, and I couldn’t help but agree, laugh and feel so joyful about it. Why so?
Because when you get to know a character who reminds you in some way, it makes you feel appreciate yourself more. Why do I happen to relate to Crowley?
The thing is, I personally am quite an odd person. One of the major themes of Good Omens was a story of odd ones. Crowley and Aziraphale are odd ones. Odd.
And I’m quite an odd one too. In many ways. One of them is that I’ve never been a “girly girl” in a stereotypical way (not that it’s a bad thing of course), but rather an androgynous expression is a natural part of what I am. There were occasions when strangers were not even sure whether I’m a guy or a girl lol (love it because confusing people is fun). Heck I’ve always felt like some sexless entity who just happened to be given a body with XX chromosomes.
The way I simply, well, am, is this weird, subtle mix of masculine and feminine (I guess “feminine masculinity” would describe my expression, if it can be called this way, pretty well. Or is it “masculine femininity??”). And I’ve started to truly appreciate it only recently. And probably one of those things that Crowley and I have in common, and what people notice, is this way of simply being, and mannerisms. (Specifically that implicitly expressed femininity that was mentioned in the post I’m referencing here; quite an odd one, but a part of, I guess, an intricate gender expression).
The reason why I felt so compelled to write this all at 01:50 AM where I am now (and then edit it couple of days later) is a fact that I truly, truly appreciate the fact that there’s a character like Crowley in whom me and others can recognize myself. And I really hope my words can do justice in expressing how great it is when you see those same patterns of expression as you do in various characters, and how much it matters.
An enormous thanks to @neil-gaiman and Terry Pratchett; to David Tennant, who portrayed Crowley in a magnificent way (the same goes to Michael Sheen and all the other actors), and to the whole crew for a beautiful work that is Good Omens.

People on the David Tennant tag: dude, everyone...
Fun fact: my friend and I are watching two (2) versions of R2 because she wanted one where “his hair is a normal length” too (but hey! Tennant is assigned for class). I’ve never seen why it’s such a weird choice myself, the costume in general is very ~flowy~ so it’s in keeping with that and he doesn’t have Wishaw’s curls
Not that I disapprove of watching multiple RII productions -- it’s fared very well on film, and nearly all* of the available versions are good -- but WHY DO PEOPLE GET SO HUNG UP ON THE HAIR, THE HAIR IS BEAUTIFUL, THE HAIR IS ALSO THEMATICALLY IMPORTANT. I mean, Tennant (and director Greg Doran) have actually talked about this a lot -- it’s part of the conception of Richard as someone who is comfortable flouting gender norms because he’s powerful enough that nobody’s going to give him shit about it. Like, he says this in the Q&A they did when the production was livestreamed in schools:
At the same time, you're also thinking, what's he gonna look like? How’s that gonna feel?...Does he have long hair? Sometimes he does. Does he have gold fingernails? Is he that sort of a guy? Does he wear armor like the people around him? And we thought, no, he’s surrounded by big, gruff blokes in armor, but actually he chooses to have rather flighty hair and to paint his nails gold and that says something about his character.
One thing I absolutely love about DT’s Richard is that he is very androgynous and he has a lot of feminine elements in his appearance and this not only isn’t used to undermine him, but is actually a source of power for him. He absolutely dominates the stage, and his appearance is part of that, because he gives absolutely zero fucks about normative forms of masculinity and that is really fucking powerful.
*The ones that aren’t probably aren’t productions you’ll stumble on by accident. Like, with BOAT HAT RICHARD you’ll know what you’re getting into right away.

Tennant, who was best known for her androgynous look, was one of the most recognizable faces of the Nineties fashion scene, a muse to the late Karl Lagerfeld and a regular on the runways of brands like Chanel, Burberry and Alexander McQueen.
She has been spending her last years in Scotland with her family but has been keeping her ties to fashion: In 2016, she teamed with her old friend Isabella Cawdor to work on a women’s collection for the Chanel-owned Holland and Holland, filled with traditional cashmere knits and tweeds, produced in the mills in Hawick, Scotland.
“Stella Tennant was an exceptionally close friend of Chanel and worked with the house for more than 25 years, from the mid 1990s, when Karl Lagerfeld was first inspired by her, to the present day,” the French house said in a statement. “She was such an iconic and inspirational woman who embodied the modern spirit of Chanel through her independence, elegance and irreverence. Her incredible beauty, both inside and out, was matched by her irrepressible wit and humor.”
When she burst onto the fashion scene in the Nineties — discovered by the late Isabella Blow — Tennant immediately became an emblem of the grunge era, and a new generation of models who were edgy and unconventionally beautiful. With her nose ring, dark eyeliner and short cropped hair the aristocratic Tennant was so different from the supermodels that had preceeded her.
She proved over the next decades to be a chameleon, working with some of the top photographers of the 20th and 21st centuries including Paolo Roversi, Bruce Weber and Peter Lindbergh, working with a host of brands on other projects beyond modeling.
“It is with great sadness that I hear of the loss of Stella Tennant. Before being a distinctively beautiful woman, she was a remarkable human being: the embodiment of elegance that comes from within. I was always impressed by her natural poise. Stella was different and memorable, strikingly so. Her presence always lit up the image with wit and effortlessness. She will be missed,” said Giorgio Armani, who tapped the model to front campaigns for his namesake brand in the past.
“Stella marked a turning point in fashion’s aesthetics and language: with her elegant grace, her fluid talent and her communicative strength she was much more than a model. A unique and timeless beauty beyond stereotypes,” said Veronica Etro.
Charming and articulate, she was ever the gracious aristo and always seemed to wear her fame and her family background lightly. She was a granddaughter of the late Deborah “Debo” Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire, and the Duke of Devonshire, Andrew Cavendish, and spent much of her childhood in and out of Chatsworth in Derbyshire, one of England’s grandest and most famous homes.
She is the daughter of Lady Emma Cavendish and the Hon. Tobias William Tennant, a  Scottish aristocrat. She was married to the photographer David Lasnet, a Paris-born photographer-turned-osteopath. The couple had four children.
The fashion community collectively expressed shock and sadness over the model’s unexpected passing.
“What sad horrific news to end this already shocking year,” said Stella McCartney. “My heart goes out to Stella’s stunning family who must be in such undeserving pain. I am speechless. An inspiring woman, her soul and inner beauty exceeded the external perfection. Stella always had a grace and light that she carried wherever she went leaving all around her left with a feeling of luck to have known her.May she ride high above us all on the most perfect horse eternally in peace.”
Having enlisted Tennant as a model in the Nineties, Calvin Klein said, “Stella had a natural elegance – a refinement that set her apart. She was not just a model., she brought her personality to all of her work, and she will be dearly missed.”
Stylist Katie Grand praised her work ethic on set: “Stella was a particular inspiring person to work with, her beauty and talent was exceptional. She worked incredibly hard, was always cool and wore clothes beautifully. As she matured she became even more beautiful,” said Grand.
Having worked with the model for so many years, Weber said they were “great pals.” The photographer described Tennant as “a gift to all photographers wrapped in a huge Scottish plaid bow. She never worried, if she looked beautiful, which of course she always did.”
Recalling how he once asked her to be photographed for the Pirelli calendar, Weber said Tennant laughed at the idea, “because no one had ever asked her before.” Weber said, “Joe McKenna was styling and we decided that instead of a black low-cut tight dress, she would wear a gorilla outfit, and she would hold its head so that we would know it was her. She said to me, ‘Bruce, I’ve been bragging all over London that I’m doing the Pirelli calendar, and then you put me in a gorilla outfit.’”
He continued, “Fearless as always, she proudly sat for her portrait – part dazzling lady and part dazzling gorilla.”
Piero Piazzi, president of Women Management Milan model agency, said Tennant was “one of the most marvelous and kindest models I ever worked with in 35 years. She was always in a good mood, and always punctual. We always stayed in touch, she even came to my wedding.” Piazzi recalled how her “eccentric” looks early on, “her pierced nose, her punkish” image was ahead of the times. “Although she was very versatile, her walk never changed, it was always very strong on the runway, whatever the brand she was working with.”
Designer Alber Elbaz called Tennant a friend and an icon. “She always represented to me what I love about fashion,” he said. “I will miss her greatly. I send all my love and support to her family that she loved with all her heart. We are all in mourning with you.”
For Alberta Ferretti, who worked with Tennant on many occasions, including her brand’s spring 2000 and spring 2001 campaigns shot by Paolo Roversi, it was Tennant’s “peculiar beauty” that always stood out: ”What I’ve always liked of Stella is her humanity and the fact that she was a person of substance: her personality was reflected in the camera and on the catwalk, giving clothes character and a strong sense of reality,” added Ferreti.
Bouchra Jarrar, who picked Tennant to front a Lanvin campaign when she was its creative director, said “Stella embodied pure elegance, and her androgynous beauty illuminated the ‘feminine.’ She represented the strength of quiet beauty.
Sandra Baucknecht, founder of Sandra’s Closet, met the model when she was working as a fashion editor at German Marie Claire in the late Nineties. Bauchnet said, “Stella filled a room with grace. When we were with Chanel in Cuba for the show in 2016, Karl Lagerfeld had photographed Stella for the exhibition “Obra en Proceso/Work in Progress.” There were many people in the gallery, but you could immediately spot Stella. She was born with this outstanding aristocratic beauty and a truly inspiring and loving soul.”
