The Office Survey

@theofficestan came up with some cool survey questions for The Office, and I saw said questions in the tag, and since I have some time to kill (while I’m here, at work . . . my life is The Office in a lot of ways tbh), I figured why not?

This got long, though, so I’m putting it under a cut.

1.) Your three favorite seasons of The Office? (in order, if possible)

HMMM, outside of my top favorite season, this one is hard. But if I had to choose . . .

Either Seven or Nine

Four is an obvious winner. Although it’s tragically the shortest season due to the writers’ strike, every single episode in season four is pure gold, to the point where it’s really hard to pick just a handful of favorites. I mean, honestly, season four is home to these pure gems:

“Did I Stutter”

“Goodbye Toby”

And that’s me narrowing it down. Honestly, season four was just . . . easily the best, imo. In addition to having so many good episodes (many of which were double the length, which slightly takes off the sting of it being a shorter season overall), the character balance was just really on point as well. Pam and Jim had just gotten together, so they were arguably at their cutest (arguably, because let’s be honest, they’re almost always cute); Michael escaped his abusive relationship with Jan and was starting his growth into a character that you could really root for; Dwight and Angela sadly broke up, and she began her relationship (read: fiasco) with Andy; I honestly prefer Ryan as the temp and wish that Karen had gotten that job instead of him, but at the same time we saw some growth and evolution in his relationship with Michael as well; Toby revealed himself to be a total creep, and so on and so forth. Season four is just really great! I really wish it had been longer.

That said, season five is also really, really good, and has to be my second favorite. Aside from the fact that this is where the Michael/Holly storyline started and was arguably at its best (I still like them later, I just prefer how they were depicted in s5), season five had the Michael Scott Paper Company arc which was AMAZING and I wish it had lasted longer (I really loved the brot3 that was Michael & Pam & Ryan; they were something else), as well as the episodes:

“The Surplus” (even the the “conflict” here makes no sense, it’s still a good episode)

“The Duel”

“Prince Family Paper” (COMEDY GOLD)

“Stress Relief” (ALSO COMEDY GOLD)

The Michael Scott Paper Company episodes as mentioned (“Two Weeks” - “Broke”)

And again, this isn’t to say the other episodes were bad, because they weren’t. This is me trying to narrow it down to some top faves.

Lastly, seven or nine . . . it’s hard for me to choose. Seven is up there because it did have some really good episodes, including quite a few which highlighted the relationship between Jo and Michael (which, while brief, was one of my faves). It also brought Michael and Holly back together, and “Michael’s Last Dundies” and “Goodbye Michael” are episodes that make me tear up every time. On the other hand, Michael also leaves, and that’s painful (even though the show is still good even after he leaves, and anyone who says otherwise is wrong), so. Season nine, meanwhile, was AGONIZING to watch as it was airing, considering all that goes on with Jim and Pam; I was on tenterhooks every week, terrified that the show was going to ruin everything and split them up. But it didn’t! They pulled through, and honestly I like that they were portrayed as a more realistic couple. We also had the introductions of Pete and Clark, who had a bit of a rough start but were still nice additions to the cast, as well as the best series finale a TV show has ever had (which is why I’m praying they don’t ruin it with a reboot). So both season seven and nine probably tie as my third favorite seasons overall.

2.) Your two favorite romances other than Jim/Pam?

Michael/Holly

Dwight/Angela

Michael and Holly edge out over Dwight and Angela purely because I feel that Michael and Holly were less dysfunctional. Like, there’s a quote from Angela in 2x15 where she says, “I’m in the healthiest relationship of my life,” but the joke is that she’s not; her insistence on secrecy with their relatonship is a mark of unhealthiness in their relationship, not because they’re bad for each other, but because neither of them are really in a place where they can be together healthily and happily. Of course they don’t stay this way; both Dwight and Angela grow exponentially over the course of the show, and by the time the finale comes they’re both very happy and healthy. But they had a period where they were, imo, just as dysfunctional as Ryan/Kelly, just in a different way, and others (Andy in particular) were caught in the crossfire because of it. Meanwhile, Michael and Holly never had that problem, and honestly, they’re just so dorky and cute. It’s not hard to believe that they are, in fact, soup snakes soulmates. So for me, Michael/Holly edges out over Dwight/Angela, though I love Dwight/Angela a lot as well.

3.) The five Office episodes you watch most often?

I honestly can’t answer this, because I’m one of those people that watches the show all the way through, and then two days later starts again from 1x01. I’m incorrigible. However, anything from seasons four or five is a safe bet if I’m just wanting to grab a singular episode to watch out of the blue. Also 2x12 “The Injury.”

4.) Pick just five favorite characters

MMHHH . . . I’m going to cheat and do two separate lists. The first one is for main characters (not just those in the opening credits, but also those who are in a lot of prominent storylines, such as Erin, Angela, and Robert California), and then one for side characters. I’m justifying this because it’s pretty much impossible to not have a top five list dominated by main characters since they receive so much focus, but The Office also has so many fantastic side characters that I don’t want to leave out.

So that said:

See?? The headliners really dominate. That said, Ryan gets an asterisk because I’m very picky about the seasons in which I love him. I like him best in seasons 1-3, where he’s there to be a deadpan snarker who is just . . . resigned and yet not to the fact that he’s a temp in this ridiculous place. I like him again in season five during the Michael Scott Paper Company arc. But otherwise I’m very “eh” about Ryan, because I feel that they often didn’t quite know what to do with him, and he wasn’t as entertaining as a hipster douchebag as he was when he was a quiet deadpan snarker. Jim says once, “I liked you better as the temp,” and Ryan says, “Me, too,” and honestly, same.

Yes, I really like Nellie. I’ll admit that part of it is because I adore Catherine Tate, but I also feel that a lot of people unnecessarily lambast her simply because they like Andy, and in all honesty, Andy deserved to lose his job after he did a No Call, No Show that involved hanging up on the CEO, and deliberately refusing calls when he knew that his job was on the line. He chose Erin over his job, and the fact that he felt he could just do that with impunity was a mark of his own immaturity. No, Nellie didn’t get the job in a very conventional way, but Robert California was not a conventional CEO. Doesn’t change the fact that she was selected, or that Andy acted like a prat.

Anyway, Stanley is amazing and severely underrated. I love Stanley. He deserves his decommissioned lighthouse that has a button he can press to launch that lighthouse into space. Give it to him. (Alternatively, he has earned his place in Florida. I’m glad he’s happy Florida Stanley for the remainder of his days.)

5.) Name three unpopular opinions you have about the show

Haha, let’s see:

The show was not bad after Michael left. Though honestly, I feel that this opinion is mostly shared by people who aren’t really fans of The Office as much as just people who know of it, and like an occasional episode, but otherwise don’t care that much. I’m never one to participate in “true fan” nonsense, but people who say that The Office sucked after Michael left remind me of genwunners in the Pokémon fandom: They like the early parts they saw, but didn’t want to give later things a chance. I admit that season eight especially has its rough patches, but that doesn’t mean that it was bad. I love all nine seasons of The Office---even season one has gems like “The Alliance”---and I disagree hard that the show was terrible after Michael left. Of course I missed him, but the rest of the cast was strong enough to still carry the show after he was gone.

As expressed above, Andy deserved to lose the regional manager position, Nellie would have been better at it, and Andy/Erin was tbh a bad relationship. This is three in one, but since they all center around Andy, I figure it’s fine to include them all in one. I already kind of explained above why Andy deserved to lose his job, but honestly, he really seriously did. You can’t just pull a No Call, No Show that involves you hanging up on the CEO and expect to keep your job. Hell, in most professional environments you can’t pull a No Call, No Show period and expect to keep your job unless you have a damn good excuse, and that’s the thing: Had Andy done that because he, say, got in a bad car accident on the way to work, or had a family emergency, that would be one thing. But he didn’t. He did that because he wanted to go get Erin back, and the only reason why he wanted her was because he couldn’t have her (more on that in a second). Andy didn’t have a good reason for blowing off work, he just didn’t. By doing what he did, he demonstrated that he didn’t actually care about his job. Therefore, he deserved to lose it. Secondly, I do think that Nellie would have been better. Sure, she was clueless---but so was Michael. So was Andy. The only people to have that position over the course of the show who weren’t clueless were Jim and Dwight (well, Dwight in season nine, at least). Nellie might have been clueless, but she could have learned, particularly since it was obvious that Dwight was keen on helping her with it. In addition to that, though, Nellie was her own, original character; after Michael left and Andy replaced him, it felt a bit like they were trying to write Andy as though he was Michael. He wasn’t quite a Michael clone, but there were certain episodes (such as “Gettysburg”) that had a Michael feel to them. But Nellie didn’t have that issue; Nellie had her own backstory, her own issues, and while she was clueless, she was clueless in a way that was different than Michael or Andy. She was a shake-up to the already established dynamic of the show, and so I feel that she would have been a better fit not necessarily in the sense that she was better equipped to be manager, but that having her in that seat could have led to some more original episodes over the course of season eight especially. Lastly, I’m sorry, but Andy/Erin was terrible and I’m glad it sank. It was really cute at first; the flirtationship they had was cute at first, particularly since they were both silly and immature. However: The Office is, overall, excellent in terms of character writing. For the most part, all of the characters are well-written, well-rounded, and realistic. However, Andy Bernard is one of the few exceptions. They changed his character both subtly and massively depending on the storyline they wanted to have, and writing him as more innocent and silly so that they could pair him up with Erin is one instance of this. Look at how Andy tries to court Erin in comparison to how he tried to court Angela; you could argue that he’s just shifting his approach in order to woo a different girl, and/or that his relationship with Angela changed him, but in honesty it doesn’t feel that way because we’re supposed to believe that Andy’s shyness is a genuine part of him. Andy was never shy about approaching women; in fact, in season three he says that his success with women is tied partly to his ability to slowly and steadily wear someone down. And we see this with Angela; he keeps pursuing her until she finally gives in. With Erin he was very tentative about it, coming across as more innocent, sweet, and a bit silly, which I think was probably due in part to the age difference between them, so that it wouldn’t seem creepy. Nonetheless, it’s hard to enjoy the fact that they’re both silly and naive when that’s . . . not really Andy, both before and after they’re together for the first time. They’re not really a good match for each other unless Andy’s personality is changed to specifically make it so. Moving on from that, and also setting aside how awful the will-they-won’t-they nonsense was (their first break-up was ridiculous, and clearly only done so that the writers could continue the will-they-won’t-they for the sake of drama), it’s as I said above: After their first break-up, Andy only ever wanted Erin when he couldn’t have her, and in that, it came to feel like he viewed and cherished her less as a person and more as something to win and then possess. I mean, think about it. Erin breaks up with Andy because of a contrived reason (she found out about his prior relationship with Angela). She ends up going out with Gabe, and Andy spends the duration of Erin’s time with Gabe being upset that Gabe “stole his girlfriend” (he didn’t; they weren’t together at the time), and insistent that Erin was “still in love” with him (she wasn’t; they only dated for like three weeks). Eventually, Erin decides that she does still have feelings for Andy, and she breaks up with Gabe to get together with him. After she makes this known, Andy . . . rejects her, because it “doesn’t feel right.” In other words: Andy was upset pretty much the entire time Erin was unavailable, but the second she was available and wanted to be with him, he lost interest. He then proceeds to keep ignoring her until he finally gets a new girlfriend of his own, Jessica. He then proceeds to up the ante on ignoring her, and starts going out of his way to hurt her feelings or otherwise flaunt his relationship (e.g. replacing her as head of the Halloween party without telling her, saying loudly how much he loves Jessica on a phone call with her when he knows that Erin is within earshot, etc). Eventually, Erin decides to pull a Jim and move away so that she can move on from Andy. Suddenly, after a season of ignoring her and deliberately flaunting his relationship in her face, Andy decides that he must have her back, and drives down to Florida to harass her until she comes back with him (there’s the “wear ‘em down until they say yes” Andy we all know and vaguely dislike). In other words: Andy was not romantically interested in Erin (and no, following her home to make sure Robert didn’t take advantage of her doesn’t count imo; that read less like jealousy and more like genuine concern considering that Robert is kiiiind of a creep), and in fact went out of his way to make that clear, but the second he saw that she was moving on from him, he just had to have her back. So he gets her back, and they return to Scranton. And what happens then? Well, he loses interest. Again. Except instead of breaking up with her, Andy just starts ignoring her again because there are other aspects of his life that are more interesting or enticing. His a capella drama is more interesting. His family’s boat is more interesting. And then he leaves her to go sailing on a boat for three months. And though he keeps in constant contact with David Wallace and tags her in memes on twitter, he only e-mails her four times. Once again, since he knew that Erin had interest in him, he lost interest in her. He had no interest in actually maintaining their relationship or spending time with her. So then Erin breaks up with him so that she can pursue Pete, someone who is genuinely interested in her and wants to be with her. And once again, now that Erin is unavailable, Andy wants her back. He tries to convince her to stay with him even though she is unhappy, telling her that if she fakes it, he won’t know the difference. He’s so utterly selfish that he literally does not care at all about her feelings. And while many felt this was out of left field, it’s not at all a surprise considering he only had interest in her when she didn’t have interest in him. He didn’t care about Erin as a person, really; he didn’t like or love her so much as he liked / loved the idea of her being into him. When he saw that he lost that, he flipped out. That’s not love, and it’s not a good relationship, and tbh I’m glad that she dumped his ass. Pete might have been (okay, was) underdeveloped, but at least he was genuinely into Erin, ffs.

I don’t think Creed is that great. Actually, I kind of dislike him. Don’t get me wrong, he does have some good lines. But mostly I just feel that he was a bit over the top with his creepiness in later seasons (such as the implications that he committed murder?), I don’t find any of his lines to be all that spectacular, and honestly, I can’t forgive him for what he did to Debbie Brown. I really can’t. So while most fans of The Office adore Creed, I’m just not one of them. Sorry, but I think he’s a bit overrated. That said, his song and final lines in the finale were great. But then again, everything about the finale was great, so that’s no surprise. :P

THANKS FOR ASKING, REI!! Daphne is actually my first oc ever and I just love her so much?? (and yeah, writer’s block is a bitch haha) I’ll put under the cut because it’s hella long.

So, Daphne is Scott’s twin and daughter to Rafael and Melissa. She’s very close to her mom which she considers as her role model, her best friend and can’t imagine a second without her mom in her life. Both of them have a great relationship where Melissa is one of the few who can make Daphne open up. On the other hand Daphne has zero contact with her dad and doesn’t try to be honest. She’s v v v harsh and resentful to him but instead of confronting him and telling her how she feels, she just act like she didn’t care (which spoiler alter, dont, she cares about it v v much but she’s hella stubborn). Her relationship with Scott is pretty great too. He’s her best friend and both of them have honestly the sweetest relationship ever. They just love each other so much and so fiercely protective of each other. But their relationship is put at risk when both of them have a secrets. Scott, to protect Daphne bc he doesn’t want her to be involved in all the supernatural bullshit and her because she doesn’t even understant what happen to her. Her other big relationship is with Stiles. He’s simply her best friend and whereas it’s sweet with Scott, Stiles and Daphne bickers all the time. With the boys, Daphne’s pretty much a more laid-back/warmer/funnier person and is sarcastic as hell. She and Stiles always sass each other, argues a lot but at the same time, they just love each other so much??

For her personality, Daphne is someone very kind and nice but she doesn’t seems like it. Daphne is a very isolated person who doesn’t socialize. All she cares are her family (which include Stiles for her) and her grades, that’s it. She doesn’t try to make new friends cause she’s got a lot of abondment issue and a lack of confidence. She pretty much thinks that people won’t like her becaus she’s not your average teenager or that they’ll end up to leave like her dad. Daphne is a nerd who loves series and books and is hella smart. Like, she’s the second smarter person in school after Lydia but she doesn’t trust it. Daphne is someone caring and with an undying loyalty, she will always be by your side no matter what. She’s very calm and composed, like, she won’t be pissed as easily as Stiles for exemple. But it’s her main problem: Daphne internalize everything. She pretends that everything is okay, will reassure and rather focus on you than her own problem which leave her with a lot of struggles. In fact, Daphne (like pretty much all of my ocs tbh) hates to feel vunerable so speaking of her feeling, open hersel fup ? #h e l l n o. With Stiles and Scott, Daphne is someone who bites back because she trust them Over the course of the serie, Daphne gains confidence and is more open to new people. Like, she won’t act like a asshole like she used to (like, trust me, Daphne was a asshole to new people tbh), but it doesn’t mean she won’t trust the person right away. Daphne became more warm, isn’t afraid to speak her mind and even less to take risks anymore. She still struggles a lot, and the supernatural life still hard for her (like, Daphne’s going throught a lot of angst tbh). But she still manage to be kind and supportive, she tries to be her best altought a lot of time, she’ll think of herself as a monster.

For the background, Daphne was raised by her mom mostly, and her dad sudden departure as well his alcholism marked her tbh. She’s got a lot of fear and issues. (like; she’s always afraid to being abandoned or to loose control and end up like her dad). She immediatly repressed her anger and pain because her mom struggled a lot and Daphne didn’t want to be a burden for her. Instead, she just pretended that everything was okay and become responsible soon enough. She helped her mother at home, and found a work early to help paying the bills.

As for her role in the serie, Daphne was at first and still be a guilty pleasure. Her first goal in the season is to understand what happen to her. Like; the night of the pilot, something happen to her and Daphne has no memories, the only thing she has is nightmares and yet, it doesn’t help. Daphne became a kind of hybrid and is without knowing bounded to Peter which gonna be a big problem in s1 and useful in s2. It’s gonna be very hard for especially since it’s gonna cause troubles in the brotp between the boys and Daphne (but everything honna be okay at the end). At the same time, I’m gonna devellop the relationship between Isaac and Daphne (i just love them) as well her meeting and alliance with Derek. But tbh, most of the time, Daphne will be manipulated by Derek, I think. Like he doesn’t have his interest in heart and doesn’t really care about her at first. Lbr, Daphne will feel like a crazy for a lot of time. The second season is more complicated for her because she’s torn between Scott and Derek. Like, Daphne knows that Derek’s idea are shitty as hell (and there’s gonna be some angst between Isaac and Daphne), especially turning teenagers into werewolf and involving them in their problems. But Derek learns control to Daphne (something she’s struggle with since she’s got a lot of repressed anger/sensible nature) and she can’t give up on this (she’s way to scared for it). But Scott still her twin best friend and she trust him more than anyone in the whole world. The revelation of supernatural to her mother is also something important to Daphne as well with the Argents. Especially Gerard who’s fascinated by Daphne’s hybrid nature and her closeness with Derek. He tried to manipulate her like he did with Allison tbh. The third season is a road for hell to Daphne. Althought she left Derek’s pack, she plays the role of a messenger most of time and still concerned about the Pack’s member. Isaac and her are dating and finally happy (at first haha) and everything is great except that she’s worried as hell for Boyd and Erica. The Alpha Pack is no good news and Deucalion has plans for the McCalls twins. Like, he knows how special Daphne is and how powerful she could be as an Alpha. While the other members of the pack aren’t happy with her because lbr, Daphne hasn’t the bone to be like them for the Alphas and it will be a waste of time. The Darach is also a shitty thing but Daphne’s main focus will be the Alpha. The Nogitsune is also a struggle for D. Like, her Siren nature is very similar to the Nogitsune and she will kinda lost control, I think. Like, Siren’s power are stronger when the person feels anger, hate, revenge which complete with the Nogistune. So I kinda have an idea where darkness and Nogistune attrack Daphne who will shift in her behavior or even being totally under the controls of her Siren side. (a lot fo angst here tbh and suffering). The season 4 is mainly about how Daphne handles grieving and her lost of control/bloodlust after the s3′s disaster. Plus, being heartbroken doesn’t help at all. I think that I might have an ideas where the Benefactor’s list is either a way for Daphne to get revenge on the supernatural creatures, especially the ones who killed people (Oliver’s inspiration over here) to feels less guilty or Daphne trying to attract the hunter’s attention to her because of guilt of everything she dones. (tbh, Daphne will be bad in this season haha). Season Five is I think the lightest season for Daphne?? Like, she’ll get better, especially since it’s her last year meaning that she’ll graduate and going to college and have a break. But the Dread Doctors are also fascinated with Daphne since she’s a natural “Chimera” and they’ll sent Theo to her. (hence, when she was younger, she kinda had a crush on him). To get information but also appealing her to his side. He knows that Daphne might be strong mentally but that she’s got a dark side and want to use it. But also that since if Daphne come to his side, it means that he’ll have a powerful shapeshifter but also that he can have whoever he want in his pack since D and Scott are inseparable. But jokes on him, he starts to develops feelings for Daphne althought their story started as nothing serious. At the end, Daphne stays by Scott althought she felt guilty and is more than ready to kill Scott. The last season is pretty much hell for her because just when she thinks that everything will be okay, shit happens again haha.

As for her relationships, I already talked about Scott and Stiles and her mom and dad. Daphne became bff with Allison but with a very bad start. D is kinda jealous of Allison because she’s afraid to loose Scott to her but at the end, Daphne is just happy for them. Lydia and her also start with the wrong foot but they soon became this strong brotp?? Like she and Daphne connect over what Peter’s done to them and Daphne is totally understand Lydia’s behavior. Instead of thinking of her as the Kanima, she protects her and soon became sister-like. There’s nothing Daphne wouldn’t do for Lydia and Lydia would do anything for Daphne. Also, one of my fave brotp for Daphne is a bit au and is crossover is Kaphne with @madipetsch. Karla and Daphne are cousins and bff and I just love them so much??

The way Phyona writes the interactions between Yuuri and Victor are some of my absolute favorite. She writes them as good-natured rivals, always ready to compete against one another; as both coach and both student, willing to direct and support one another; as best friends, willing to tease and goof off with one anther; as lovers, passionately invested in one another; and as soulmates, completing and fulfilling one another. She is amazing at writing both comedy and drama, switching between moods and creating the appropriate emotional gravitas. But her stories have positive messages about growth and becoming stronger together.

Rating: Explicit Words: 74.1k Status: Complete Relationship: Katsuki Yuuri/Victor Nikiforov Tags: Canon compliant; Post-season 1; Domestic fluff; Anxiety; Miscommunication; Learning to relationship ❤❤❤❤❤ Summary: When Yuuri moves in with Victor in St. Petersburg, they have to work through Yuuri's anxiety and Victor's secrets to find their balance. ❤❤❤❤❤ Review: This is my favorite post-season 1 fic where Yuuri and Victor learn to live together. This is a story of their interactions off of the ice and how they inspire each other to be better people and boyfriends. Their interactions are awkward but eager at the beginning, and slowly they learn to work through their issues and grow closer emotionally and sexually. One of my favorite parts about this story is when Yuuri has an anxiety attack and almost convinces himself that Victor doesn't love him like he loves Victor, but he's able to work through the negative thoughts and recognize that it's in his head and that he doesn't deserve to think of himself like that. I really like how he is able to work through it himself, which I think is a powerful message. I recognize that this isn't necessarily possible for all people. We all need help at times and sometimes can't work through things by our own power, and that's why emotional support and medical science are so important. But don't discredit how much you can do yourself. Yes, Yuuri is an anxious bean and he can't help his brain chemistry, but he doesn't let it rule or excuse his decisions. He learns to accept and empower himself for both Victor and himself. I love this sort of hopeful and powerful message.

Puppy Love

Rating: Teen Words: 10.4k Status: Complete Relationship: Katsuki Yuuri/Victor Nikiforov Tags: Canon divergent; Dog Yuuri; Curses; Dead Makkachin; Hurt/comfort ❤❤❤❤❤ Summary: When Yuuri gets turned into a dog, the last place he expects to end up is Victor Nikiforov's apartment. He learns quickly that the only thing worse than being his idol's pet, is watching him pine for someone else. ❤❤❤❤❤ Review: A wonderful oneshot that is both humorous and sad. Victor is suffering the loss of Makkachin and becomes attached to puppy Yuuri, and Yuuri simultaneously wants to hide from Victor and emotionally support the man through his grief. The story is charming in how these two become closer in this weird situation that does eventually correct itself. And they have an appropriately awkward yet happy and honest interaction at the end.

Most of Piyo13's stories are fluffy short stories, about 50/50 Victuuri and Phichimetti. All are appropriately sweet. Her wraiths pinned to the mist is a longer fluffy story where Yuuri and Viktor are scientists in Antartica. Her meatiest, and my personal fave, story is a series that takes place in an alternate canon universe where everyone has daemons - external physical representations of a person's inner self. She's currently written three fics in this universe, and I look forward to whatever else Piyo13 writes in it!

hollow ground

Rating: Teen Words: 40.9k Status: Complete Relationship: Katsuki Yuuri/Victor Nikiforov Tags: Canon divergence; Daemons AU; Gold medal ending ❤❤❤❤❤ Summary: There's no rules regarding where a daemon has to be in relation to their skater, only that they aren't allowed on the ice. This has always seemed a little unfair to Yuuri. After all, he loves skating like he loves his own soul; why can't he have both? ❤❤❤❤❤ Review: There are several things I love about this story. First, the daemons are adorable and help enhance the story and character scenes without overpowering the characters we already know. They're given their own character without taking up the spotlight, which I feel is the best way to write OCs. Second, despite it being an alternative retelling of the series, every scene feels fresh. Piyo13 is selective about which scenes she covers from the anime, avoiding only retreading over what's familiar. The scenes are altered enough with the presence of the daemons to help them feel new. Additionally, she doesn't let the scenes drag, capturing Yuuri's thoughts succinctly and with wit, and then moving on to the next scene. Even better are the original slice-of-life scenes Piyo13 added to further develop characters and relationships. Moments between Yuuri and Phichit talking over chat (about more than Victor) that delve into their friendship; a moment after JJ's flopped SP where Yuuri helps JJ become motivated again; a moment at the end where Yuuri's parents tell him how proud they are and he thanks them for their love and support; and then all of the new moments between Victor and Yuuri, like when they first start practising pair skating. Third, and probably the best, the last few chapters fix all the major grievances I had with the anime's ending. (Note: If you don't want anything spoiled, stop reading right now). Yuuri gets the gold medal; Chris and Otabek end up on the podium with him; Yuuri and Victor's decision to return to the ice doesn't feel rushed (they return to Hasetsu before discussing their decisions); and, most importantly, Yuuri's decision to return to the ice is only influenced by his own realization that he loves it and that he doesn't want to stop what he's had with Victor just yet. It's not debased or obfuscated by rivalry, when Yuuri's main character arc was always that he's his own worse enemy. The series also includes two side stories: a falling star can't fall forever, a prequel about Victor and Vasilisa; and life's not a paragraph, focusing on Chris. Overall, this is an amazing story.

movie night Rating: Teen -- Words: 2.5k -- Status: Complete -- Summary: However, they had barely started Howl’s Moving Castle before Yuuri wondered if he had made a mistake. "What a fascinating concept! What spells do you suppose Howl is using to keep his, er, moving structure up?" Viktor refused to call it a "castle." A terrible mistake. ❤❤❤❤❤ Words: 21.2k Status: Complete Relationship: Katsuki Yuuri/Victor Nikiforov Tags: Harry Potter AU; Aurors; Crossdressing ❤❤❤❤❤ Review: In this series, Yuuri and Viktor are both badass Aurors during a moment of downtime at the beginning of the story - Viktor forced into being a field-tester for the Research Department, and Yuuri recovering from his first, long-term undercover mission. What's really unique about this story is Yuuri's situation and what lead to it. He has taken on a new persona to help ease himself back into his life. Yuuri is amazing and adorable no matter what gender he is, and here he is both. I love how comfortable he is as a woman or a man and how his mannerisms change (and remain the same) across the two. There are a lot of misunderstandings during the first half of the fic - Viktor slowly falling for "Yukina", who reminds him of another Japanese man he was charmed by a year before - but eventually Yuuri opens up completely to Viktor and they become partners. So, so wonderful and sweet! The 2nd fic is a cute, little side-story after they've become partners, where Yuuri tries to show Viktor a Miyazaki movie... and proceeds to regret it once he realizes Viktor's one of those people who must always question and/or nitpick a movie out loud while watching. Haha. The ending where they re-enact an early scene from the movie is horrendously adorable though.

But for Yuuri, an end to skating could mean an end with Viktor, and when two female skaters approach them with an offer that could make them or break them, they are put to the test more than ever. Can they rise higher than they already have? ❤❤❤❤❤ Review: Another "homophobia exists within the canon universe" story that is still unique and interesting with how it handles the characters. Yuuri and Viktor are approached by a pair of female lovers who want to do a pair skate with each other at an official ISU competition, and they want Yuuri and Viktor to be their pair skating partners to get them to that point. Yuuri is an idealistic activist who never even really knew he was one until given the opportunity to make a difference. He can be a bit ignorant, following his heart on the matter and not fully understanding what he's sacrificing until in the thick of it and starting to be overwhelmed, but he's brave and kind and his heart is in the right place. He can be a bit preachy when it comes to Viktor's choice to support from the sidelines, but still loves him and tries to find a middle ground. Viktor is the pragmatic realist on the other hand, knowing that supporting this endeavor will cause him to lose his prestige and gold medals. Initially he's insensitive about Yuuri's choice, but eventually agrees to support him but in ways that won't cause him to sacrifice his hard-earned legacy. It's not that he doesn't believe in the cause, but rather he's not willing to give up that much. I personally enjoy this taken on Viktor and find his opinion a valid one, even though Yuuri's lines up more with my own ideals. Eventually, he does fully join and support the cause when things become more personal, but before then is a lot of struggle between the two to find middle ground and maintain a supportive relationship. It's a realistic struggle that I'm certain many couples can sympathize with, and I appreciate the story for going there. This story's greatest strength is the real-life issues, struggles, and reactions these characters face, and yet their desire to continue to support, fight, and love one another. It's a really great story that I hope powerandpathos decides to continue again some day in the future.

Victor has lost his drive and should be prepping for the European Championship instead of flying to Japan on a whim. After a crushing defeat at Nationals, Yuuri is in the midst of a crisis himself. Good thing they have their best friends – Phichit and Christophe – at their sides to keep them from falling apart. When Victor learns Yuuri must return to Detroit to finish college, he makes a rash decision to come to America with him. But why rush the journey? There's more than a week before classes start, dual existential crises to escape, and a budding romance to nurture. Time for a road trip. (A story in which two sets of best friends road trip across America together.) ❤❤❤❤❤ Review: Man, we aren't even to the road trip yet - we aren't even back in Detroit yet - and I'm already in love with this fic. proantagonist writes some of the best character interactions across all YOI fanfics - between Yuuri and Phichit, Yuuri and Victor, Yuuri and Chris, etc. And I am already so strongly invested in all four of the characters here. Chris' advice is halting Victor from his most unintentionally harshest commentary. Phichit is providing the emotional support that Yuuri needs at this time. And Victor and Yuuri are forming a connection earlier due to their friends' support. The latest chapter is my fave - they've pretty much had the entire beach scene conversation from episode 4, Victor has opened up about feeling lost at this moment in his life, Yuuri has an anxiety attack and snaps out all of his frustractions, Victor meets him in the middle, and they agree to help each other through their rough patches. Everybody is so supportive and wonderful, and I love such positive relationships. It's a sped-up version of their relationship from the anime with less miscommunication issues. And while I can definitely appreciate a slowburn, sometimes you just want to avoid a repeat of the same scenarios or the miscommunication tropes. That doesn't mean that there isn't a potential for more angst or miscommunication (I mean, there's always this fic's version of "Let's end this"), but everything is at a pretty healthy point currently. It warms my heart. And the roadtrip aspect just has the potential for so many more warm, supportive moments. I can't wait for more!

Winter Song Universe (Series, 2 works)

Winter Song Rating: Explicit -- Words: 156.5k -- Status: Complete -- Summary: Yuuri was aware that at some point — a moment in time he couldn’t quite place — Victor had become his boyfriend. There wasn’t a single instant when it happened. It was a slow awareness, as if Victor had silently been asking the question for months now, and Yuuri had been giving him the answer a little more with each passing day.

Falling (Victor's Story) Rating: Teen -- Words: 69.7k -- Status: Complete -- Summary: "What do you want me to be to you?" "I want you to be yourself." And wasn’t that just the funniest thing? This whole time, Victor had been trying to figure out which mask to wear to make Yuuri happy, when all he wanted was for Victor to take it off and show him the real person beneath. ❤❤❤❤❤ Words: 226.1k Status: Complete Relationship: Katsuki Yuuri/Victor Nikiforov Tags: Canon compliant; Post season 1; Scenes between episodes; Fluff; Smut ❤❤❤❤❤ Review: In a lot of ways, I consider this the essential companion fic to the series. The story takes care to be true to the canon material while fleshing out the characters and their relationships with each other more. It doesn't spend time rehashing what we already see in the series; instead it focuses on fleshing out the scenes between the episodes and after the end of season 1. The story mostly focuses on the developing romance between Victor and Yuuri and has a lot of very well-written smut and emotional hurt/comfort scenes. For those perhaps confused by some of the characters' actions or motivations in the series, this story provides one potential interpretation by a fan who has extensively written and thoughtfully considered many potential headcanons on her tumblr. It's clear she deeply cares about the characters to spend so much time analyzing the series. She takes a lot of care to remain faithful to the series, while still fleshing out the Victuuri romance. It's a beautiful story.

cluna hi i’m such a dumbass. i was waiting for your response for days missing you but then i realized you DID respond and i just didn’t see it. yikes. anyway HI!

guess what? i started playing genshin impact and i LOVE it. i’ve only played a couple hours though and i’m so surprised at how well it works on mobile. sadly i only have a macbook so i can’t play on my computer but WOW! as i played i hardly noticed it was a mobile game it’s super fleshed out. the world is insanely beautiful. i’m still on the prequel though but god i’m super excited to see how the game will pan out. once again, your rec is amazing and i love you for it.

Hi lex, i had a question. Are there lgbtq books/comics that you enjoyed that you think are more representative and are narratively better than cp? If you do i would love to check more out and get a feel for the differences.

Not gonna lie, I’ve been hemming and hawing about how to answer this ask haha. But thank you for your q!!!

Yes, there are a lot of lgbt books/comics that I have enjoyed better than CP and that I think are narratively better and which treatment of LGBT issues I did find more satisfying.

But I’ve also read (and critiqued) CP by itself, like how I read any other works, and try to come up with things that are objectively enjoyable about it and things I don’t like about it in a vacuum. I wanted to shy away from making any comparisons, lest it be incongruous or void. I didn’t want to be unfair in comparing it to a work of a different medium or genre, or make hierarchies on works that tackle LGBT issues based on their treatment of it. And anyway, I feel like the brunt of my criticisms about CP has something to do with its abandonment of some of its storylines and its uncompelling character arcs and story. That is to say, I think… maybe any other well-structured, well-written story will do?

For instance, I just recently finished Andre Aciman’s Call Me By Your Name, and it’s a coming-of-age love story between two guys with a sizeable age difference, and further, it’s a story where there are no extrinsic deterrents to their relationship and what drives the story are just their feelings, how they act on it and don’t act on it, and y’all it doesn’t even tackle coming out, or homophobia; in those aspects, you can compare it to CP, and it just does a better job of addressing the issue of age difference or in general, just expressing the nature of desire and physicality and confusion that comes with First Love. The younger guy’s insecurity, while it was assuaged, never really went away, but at least it was addressed. Are the two works really comparable? No. But did I enjoy it better? Absolutely. And it’s the same for like, I guess 90% of LGBT works I’ve read vis a vis CP.

And I have read a lot of stuff. In the interest of full disclosure, I did grow up reading shonen-ai and yaoi?? If you know what those are, you won’t be surprised at how fluffy comics with “queer” characters has existed long before CP (or, while at it, how reminiscent zim*its is of a traditional yaoi pairing with the Hunky Seme and blushing virginal Uke; might be also why i hate the pairing for how i’ve seen that dynamics a million times before). Though I make no value judgments about yaoi, I guess what I’m trying to say is that there are a LOT of romance (and even scifi and fantasy) LGBT works that don’t focus on queer issues, and they aren’t less enjoyable for that fact. The key is deciding early on if queer issues such as homophobia is something to be dealt with in the comic’s universe, and not flip flop midway and ending lacklustre and lacking like how CP did it. I guess I wanted to address the point that our criticisms of its lack of discussion about stuff is waived because CP is “supposed to be fluffy”; I maintain that it’s worthy of criticism because it wasn’t consistent on its discussion. Shhh this stays as a secret lol but one of the earliest yaoi novel I remember reading was this pulp trashy novel Only The Ring Finger Knows and it’s about two guys falling for each other and navigating their relationship and living together and they don’t really face scrutiny for being gay. But all their insecurities and all the misunderstandings were addressed properly, and it’s not Man Booker material but I remember feeling satisfied.

In addition, I do believe that the Coming Out story where the protagonist comes out stronger™ for it is as cliche as they come.

One of the most nonchalant mention of sexuality that I can remember is from one of my favorite webcomics ever– The Less Than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal--when TJ gets asked if he’s gay and he replies, “I ping all I am ninja.” But it’s also a story about a POC who’s gay and trapped in an arranged marriage, but it doesn’t dwell on that and the story keeps moving. At the heart of that comic is just two guys finding themselves and falling in love while on a roadtrip. That’s as tropey as you get, and yet the character development is to die for.

There’s a lot of LGBT stories where the queerness aren’t used solely as a device to drive a larger story. There is A LOT.

Off the top of my head, Sarah Waters has historical novels like Fingersmith and Tipping the Velvet that are more plot-driven, doesn’t deal with the queer issues, but have women falling in love and being happy together. Fingersmith is also where the movie The Handmaiden is based from, which if you haven’t watched, should. Some of David Levithan’s stories deal with homophobia, but most are just guys falling in love and being happy and cute. Hanya Yanagihara’s A Little Life–a read I don’t recommend to anyone dear to me– has its protagonist fall in love with his Hollywood celebrity best friend (though I think the takeaway from this novel is that love doesn’t cure trauma, though people suffering from it can be happy) and there is no fuss about their queerness at all, and the book is actually nominated for a Man Booker.

There are also works like Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe (POC, LGBT), or Perry Moore’s Hero, or Tillie Walden’s autobiographical graphic novel Spinning (LGBT, sports) that are about coming-of-age and aren’t afraid to tackle the warping effect of homophobia, the feelings of shame and fear that comes with being queer in a realistic world, and yet did not demure to end on a hopeful note.

I know the webcomic Tripping Over You is but a fluffy slice-of-life that’s just two guys who are in a relationship, talking it out and that’s it?? And it’s satisfying, and I can’t help but highlight how the coming out story of one of its characters, Liam, to his father was nothing but his decision to make, despite all the hiding he did was affecting his relationship with his partner as well. That coming out arc was a blip in the larger story arcs that are… their relationship and about being adults.

And I mean you even have fanfics that include that feature its characters coming out, and I have read a disturbing amount of fics you guys, even hockey rpf featuring different pairings, that discuss the issues that CP seemed to present (but didn’t follow through on) in a better way. I remember this lowkey one about a beat reporter starting a relationship with a professional hockey player, and the difference in their status is addressed, financially and in other terms, and that both of them are fully cognizant about these things as they proceed with the relationship. And the hopeful coming out scenario is a product of playing out the consequences of it and the alternative. I also remember this moment in that fic where the main POV character deals with a panic attack with his partner present, and it’s so much powerful to me than anything CP has shown about mental health.

In terms of mental health, I remember reading Tobias and Guy which is as light and fluffy as you get when a guy (literally named Guy) falls in love with a demon guy, and has this arc when Guy dealt with depression while in that relationship, and it was short and succinct but dared one of its characters to at least ask “but his family are loving and are supportive of him. how can he think like that?” for the sake of expounding the topic. I think it’s an okay portrayal of how partners in a relationship might deal in a situation where on suffers from mental health illness. I feel like the show You’re The Worst has also been exemplary in that regard. SKAM’s season 3 deals with internal homophobia and mental health illness while in a relationship and coming out (with none of the backlash of homophobia like CP) but doesn’t deal with cliches, and remains as a compelling and moving story.

In terms of insight into sports, a notable read for me is Nina Revoyr’s The Necessary Hunger (LGBT, POC, Sports), as it treated the sport the characters are in as integral part of who they are, which, I think is an effective use of the sports as a genre. As a manga-reader though, I’ve been spoiled by sports manga which are the best! sports! comics! (Slam Dunk! Hajime no Ippo! Hikaru no Go!) because they deal with their respective sport with so much insight, aplomb and passion, viewed in the eyes of the hero who’s in a journey to triumph. In manga, even baking bread can be a sport haha. To be honest these sports comics don’t need to have an athlete’s insider info on the world it’s set in. They just have to be believable. CP, I think, lacks both believability and insight, and more importantly, a deep tangible way the sports affects its protagonist. I find that so unsatisfying. I’m looking forward to how well C.S. Pacat’s Fence does.

My favorite college slice-of-life comic isn’t LGBT however, but it’s about a group of occasionally-starved college students in an art school. I read/saw the anime when I was in high school and has since stuck with me. I was equally invested in each of the characters’ storylines, not much like how I lost interest in CP after Rans and Holster and Shitty and Lardo were relegated to the fawning supportive straight friends stereotypes. The main romance doesn’t detract from the characters having their own stories and careers they want to fulfill. Even the POV character, who wasn’t my fave, had an endearing and compelling story.

As a bottomline: I don’t think there is a holy grail of lgbt works insomuch as they subjectively appeals to us. These are just some works that stand out to my memory and there are various takeaways from each for our purpose of comparison, but there are tons of material out there, LGBT and otherwise. SERIOUSLY. And I think there’s nothing wrong with trying it out one work at a time, see if it pings you. Trust your judgment friend!

Yeah, I did try taking it out/redownloading/reinstalling. Multiple times. And nada. It’s so frustrating! I was kinda disheartened when you said it didn’t work with having played the story, but reassured when you got it working. :) I mean, I know it works because it worked just fine in my initial install, once the story was played. So, I’m hoping that’s the key. I think it must be, because there are some fundamental changes with how the story neighborhood works once the story is completed. If that’s the case, I’m hoping it’ll still work even though I started the freeplay scenario before doing the story.

So, I’m about halfway through the story. Hoping to finish it tonight with enough time to experiment in the other neighborhood. I’m encouraged by the fact that I peeked in the freeplay hood and the story rewards I’ve unlocked in the story so far were also available there. So *fingers crossed*.

So I see overlay boxes work? Was not expecting that.

They do! At least the ones I installed do! (Male and female body hair and two tattoo boxes.) It’s likely because the game has the “heatstroke” overlay from Seasons. (And maybe the frozen one, too, but it’s sort of hard to freeze on a tropical island... :) ) Many things work, in fact, but some only after you’ve completed the story.

I’m still trying to figure out the game engine the thing uses because knowing that will make it easier to predict whether or not a TS2 mod will work and/or which version of a mod to try first. It’s either Seasons’s or OFB’s or maybe a hybrid of the two. But it also has some stuff from BV, like the pirate ship. Those are all just objects, though; the beach lots don’t have surf like BV beaches do. (Which is a shame because it’d be fun to have @maybesomethingdunno‘s surfing mod in it, but I’m 99.8% certain that won’t work. :) And even if it did, it’d look weird without surf. :) )

Haha! That is awesome.

Heh. It was one of those ideas “born” out of desperation. I had seven babies at the time, couldn’t afford cribs (But I decided early on that rock “fences” would be free, in order to create “rooms” on the lot, if needed), and no one could sleep on the lot with a baby laying on the ground. (Which is SOOOOOOO stupid and needs to be modded out.) Hence, baby corral. It works. For babies, anyway. :)

Well, it helps that there are 8 adults to share the load. :) Nine babies isn’t so bad with 8 adults around, as it’s almost a 1:1 ratio, so long as no one slacks. *side-eyes Orlando Centowski* It’s just that they can’t do much else besides baby/toddler care other than occasionally shoving something edible in their face and maybe taking a nap here and there. :) In a normal two-parent household where at least one has a job, I pull my hair out with just twins. Maybe I won’t, so much, after doing this, though...

Ah, but the problem is that they’re ALL howling at once. :) Basically, they all have to cry themselves to sleep, since there are no cribs to put them in. Well, I do have ONE crib now, actually. One crib for nine toddlers. They get rotated in and out of it. I could buy more now, but the toddlers are all going to age up soon -- and there’s no “selling back” according to the rules I’m using for this scenario -- so I think I might want to save the resources for other things. Like more leaf beds. Hopefully children can use those.... And maybe some hammocks for the adults. I think they’ve earned them. I shudder to think of the hell it must’ve been hell to sleep on the ground in the third trimester...

More trees is my go-to, too! :) But actually, I don’t plan this sort of thing. It’s more like, “Hey, that lot opened the Athletic career! Now they need someplace to play.” *plops down baseball diamond in random spot* Then it’s, “Hmmmm, that looks really out of context. *moves baseball diamond close to lot that unlocked the career* Then it’s, “If people are gonna come see the game, they’ll need some place to park their car.” *builds adjacent completely useless deco parking lot* Then it’s, “I’m envisioning cracked windshields. Plus, how’re they gonna tell if it’s a home run?” *plots strategy to put lots under baseball diamond just so that fences can be built.* And on and on.

It’d be so much easier if I could just plop down the hood deco and be done with it, but I...just...can’t....

I’m glad you’re enjoying them! :) I’m having a blast playing it. It’s a great change-of-pace for when I get in one of those “I don’t feel like loading TS2″ moods. And it’s like instant gratification because the game loads instantly, so I can go in and out of the game to screw around with things and test out bizarre, wild hair ideas really easily.

And it was totally accidental poetry; I didn’t even realize it rhymed beyond “row to hoe” until you pointed it out. :)

They seem to be each other’s second-faves, though. And it’s not like it really matters since it’s basically one big polyamorous clan. Which is exactly what I wanted.

*cough*games4theworld*cough* I pirated mine, and that site is nice. (No creepy porn ads, at least! :) ) The game’s not legitimately for sale new and unused anymore, so unless you can find a used copy, pirating is actually more ethical than paying more than retail to some shady online “store” that doesn’t have the right to sell it for those prices. *gets very irked at “stores” who ignore retail agreements* Either way, EA doesn’t get any money out of it, so...eh. :)

This is probably not helpful at all, but I just discovered that in TS2 there's a settings option to add the Pets unlocks from codes shared with friends. I suppose it's too much to hope that they've done that for CS as well.

Not that I know of. I searched around a lot and read lots of “game strategy/hint” websites, and didn’t find anything about it. Buuuuuut, as it turns out I’m playing the story, anyway. In the end, you’re kind of forced to, at least if you ever want to use any of the electricity-dependent items in it. I’m just kind of blitzing through it to collect up all the story rewards, including some I missed on my first play-through.

I only use V.1, and the only thing I know of to miss is autonomous proposals and go steadys. Have you seen this much with V.2, Icad?

Last I heard, twojeffs never got the auto proposals/go-steadys working in V.2, anyway. V.2′s kind of an eternal beta, as I understand it. The biggest differences between the two is that in v.2 you have far more control over the settings on a Sim level, so it’s much MUCH more customizable than v.1 is. It also has some settings that I really like, like setting a Sim’s “ideal family size” which further moderates whether or not a pair will try for baby. That being said, you have to fiddle with those settings manually on a Sim-by-Sim basis to get the full effect, which can be tedious unless you’re a person like me who gets off on tedium. So, like I said, which version is “better” really depends on how much control you want to have and how much effort you’re willing to put into it. I like v.2 a lot better, personally, but it requires AL/M&G, so I can’t use it in Castaway.

Emma: I guess no one? Harry: Yeah, don’t think that has ever happened?

I: 1. What do you do when the other is upset?

Harry: It’s pretty easy to notice because, she kinda doesn’t listen to music? Like, she’s proper quiet and that’s… off-putting. So, I try to talk with her and usually, she tells me what’s wrong pretty quickly. And I think talking about it helps you a lot, doesn’t it? Emma: Definitely. I just need to vent a bit, get it off of my chest… and then I usually feel better. But with you it’s a bit more difficult because you don’t really like talking about your problems, so it’s like pulling teeth, trying to get you to talk about what’s actually bothering you. So I usually… light a candle and make a cup of tea and… try to be there for cuddling and stuff? Harry: S’ppose that’s true… I just don’t want you to worry about what’s worrying me, so I keep quiet and try to work it out on my own… but I’m trying to be better with the sharing stuff…

I: 2. Who is more romantic? Give examples.

Emma: That one goes to Harry, without question. Like… all those little surprises that wait for me, when you’re gone for a longer period of time. Like new records – mostly new records of artists you think I’d like. Surprise visits in general… And the surprise dinners? I love them so much… You’re actually an amazing cook! Harry: Thanks. I just love doin’ that stuff for you… But you’re actually plenty romantic… Cause you like to slip these bits and pieces of lyrics, or poems or quotes from books and movies into my pockets when I go away. Honestly, they’re the best thing ever…

I: 3. What do your families think of your relationship?

Harry: Well, I know that Gemma adores her. Which is kinda annoying because they tend to team up against me. Mum loves Emma too, ever since she stayed over for Christmas and walked around in that reindeer suit and baked like 1000000 Christmas biscuits and that Stollen-thing… Emma: Well, I’m quite lovable. Harry: Yeah, you’re alright, I guess. Emma: Idiot… For whatever, incomprehensible reason, my sister likes him a lot – and my niece, Thea, she’s completely obsessed with him. Obviously she doesn’t understand a word he’s saying but somehow, every time they meet, they’re inseparable. And I think, weirdly enough, he’s won my mum over? She’s not an easy nut to crack, so I’m pretty impressed about that. My dad likes him as well, but I think what Harry does for a living still freaks him out a bit.

I: 4. If you had to wear a couples costume for Halloween, what would you go as?

Emma: Umm… Oh, we could go as Simon & Garfunkel… that would be cool, right? Harry: I could get on board with that. I actually thought you’d say something like: yeah, Harry’s gonna dress up as Vermeer and I’ll go as the Girl with a Pearl Earring. Emma: That’s actually an even better idea! Harry: Oh God…

I: 5. Are you both earlier rises? Or do you both sleep in? Or is there one of each?

Emma: I am absolutely not an early riser. Harry: Haha, no you aren’t! You’re such a night-owl. Like, when I’m away in the States – there’s a good chance, you’ll still be awake at like four in the morning. Emma: Hey! Your sleeping schedule is way more messed up than mine! Harry: That is debatable.

I: 6. Do you have any routines at night? Before bed, in bed, etc.

Harry: You usually read a lot… and I’ve kinda picked up on that? Emma: Meaning you’re stealing my book. Harry: I’m just curious about the notes you write down in the margins. Often gives me a whole new perspective on a story. I like that. Emma (swoons): Awww. Harry: Also, you wanting to get your book back very much always leads to other activities that I’m quite fond of. Emma (bursts out laughing): That’s… true.

I: 7. What nicknames do you have for each other?

Harry: Umm… We don’t really have nicknames? Emma: No, I don’t think so? Sometimes you call me love? But… no real nicknames. God we’re boring! Harry: I’d like to think we’re cool. Emma: Haha, yeah okay. We’re cool.

I: 8. Say you had a child, who is the strict parent and who is the lenient parent?

Harry: Umm… I guess, we’d both be… a bit strict and a bit lenient… dunno, it’s kinda a bit early to talk about kids right? Emma: Yes. God, definitely a bit early. But in this hypothetical scenario, I do think you’re right… I think we’d both be a good mix of both?

I: 9. Would you rather go to a fancy restaurant for a date or stay at home and watch movies with pizza?

Both simultaneously: Stay at home and watch movies with pizza!

I: 10. What first attracted you about the other person?

Harry: Honestly… she just danced into that Café right in front of me – and the whole image… the way she bopped her head up and down to the music and moved her hips in this clumsy but cute way. That was, in a weird way, very attractive and so cool? And then she fell down and I helped her up and she said that Harry Potter line to me… Dunno… plenty of things at once. You have a very capturing personality, a beautiful smile, a cool sense of humour… You just always kept me wanting to get to know you more, I guess that was the most attractive thing about you. Emma: Fucks sake Harry… (clears her throat)… Okay… well I guess, I kinda really liked – and it’s embarrassing to admit to that – your stupid jokes. Harry: Hah! Emma: (mumbles) I’ll never live that one down… Also, umm, the way you generally hold yourself… that was one of the first things I noticed about you... pretty damn attractive.

first time i heard of them: I heard of them just after they debuted! I'm pretty sure it was through tumblr too, I got a suggested post from a blog that announces kpop debuts and I was like "oh they look cool I'll check them out" and I was just hooked from 'Sorry Mama'.

when i became a fan: Debut era~ When they debuted I was just a little in awe of them, honestly, not because they were necessarily better than other groups debuting at the time but for me 'Sorry Mama' didn't really sound like anything else that had been released. I thought it was really cool and interesting for them to use female vocals in their debut song at the end, it's usually a lot later that kpop groups have other artists involved like that (if ever, really) but that made the song really stand out and then I started watching some of their Dakcumentaries and just really liked them~

favorite (and least favorite) title track: My favourite title track is 'Still'! It was such a change up from 'Sorry Mama' but they did it so well, for me their debut really let the rap line shine but 'Still' was all about the vocalists and they did it so well!!! My least favourite title track is probably 'Sorry Mama'... ejrgberhge which ok yes I do love it but it's just my least favourite of the title tracks, I think they've grown a lot since their debut and while I do love the song it also has some of the worst line distribution so...

favorite (and least favorite) b-side: For me DKB have such a solid discography so early on, honestly, they went for very distinct concepts for all their albums and those concepts are carried through into every b-side so everything flows so well~ But my faves are: Fondue (like seriously guys... seriously... idk what it is... is it e-chan with his soft vocals or Junseo being given the credit he deserves??? idk but yes to all of it), Flower Less (again like!!!!!! yes!!!!!), Go Up (so cute, so wholesome), Rose (she classy, she a little bit sexy, she a subtle bop, we love her). I don't really have a least favourite b-side but I'll just say Youth because it's technically just like the album opener and it's too short at 1:43. OK and if I had to pick probably 'Samsung', because it's just idk it's funny??? I don't dislike it but it's pretty much just a promo for Samsung and as a Samsung user I relate to thinking the phones are pretty good but ejhrgbejre the song is just funny, if there was any song of theirs I'd occasional skip it would be that one.

favorite (and least favorite) mv: Favourite MV is 'Work Hard'! It's just colourful and cute, I love like the three different distinct groups the members are divided up into with completely different aesthetics and just the overall styling of the MV is so good, Lune with that golden-blonde hair??? YES. My least favourite MV is probably 'Sorry Mama' just 'cause it's not my favourite aesthetically, it's quite flashy from what I can remember and you canny see Junseo's face literally the entire time, like what was with the bucket hat????

favorite (and least favorite) album: 'LOVE'! It's my favourite of the debut mini series, all the songs are so good and so on concept, it's such a change up from their debut and such a good first comeback album, it's just flawless~~ My least favourite is probably 'The Dice is Cast' and it's literally only because it's their first full album but it's actually just a repackage of all their minis... and yet they didn't include every song??? Like song-wise it's brilliant 'cause I just think most of their songs are great but idk it just defeats the point of repackaging if you don't include all the songs?? I would've just liked a huge mega-repackage where they included all 18 songs on it but there's only 10...

a concept i wished they’d try: I'm not entirely sure, I think obviously a suit concept... 'cause I like suits and that's just the whole truth, if ever idol group wore suits every era I wouldn't be mad about it. I think I'd love to see them go really summery too though???? I think there are some members in particular who'd suit the concept really well (sunshine concept for my sunshine boy pls) and idk a song along the lines of like Astro's 'Baby' or Seventeen's 'Pretty U' or Golden Child's 'Pump It Up' or The Boyz 'Bloom Bloom' like something just fun and summery??? It's not something they've really done 'cause they've gone with different sounds but I think they've got the talent to pull it off and might be a good challenge for them.

what i like most about them: I think they just give off a lot of positive energy? I know we don't know anything really about these idols and honestly that's kinda how it should be, those boundaries are important, but together they seem to have a really good energy. They really hype each other up, they seem really hard working and ambitious, all of them are really willing to put in the work to get better at what they do and I think in an industry like theirs it's important to be motivated but also have people around you to build you up and encourage you, which is what they seem to do for each other.

my bias + bias wrecker: I love all of them equally but Taemin was my first bias!

first time i heard of them: I heard SHINee for the first time in about 2012, at the time I was watching a lot of anime (anime mvs on youtube too haha good times) and listening to a lot of the osts on youtube, then one day Sherlock was recommended to me, I clicked on it and I have been a sucker for them ever since.

when i became a fan: I pretty much became a fan immediately, they drew me in so quickly and once I'd heard Sherlock I was watching all their previous stuff, listening to their b-sides and finding out a lot more about them! They're pretty much the only kpop group I've listened to consistently since 2012, it took me a good while to get into a lot of other groups beyond casual listening but I heard those 5 shining boys and I was gone~

favorite (and least favorite) title track: My absolute favourites are: Replay, Love Like Oxygen, Juliette, Ring Ding Dong, Lucifer, Hello, Sherlock, Dream Girl, Why So Serious?, Everybody, View, Married to the Music, 1 of 1, Tell Me What To Do, Good Evening, I Want You, Our Page, Countless, Don't Call Me and Atlantis! And I don't believe there is any to dislike~ Also a shout out to their Japanese discography 'cause I only mentioned their Korean ones but tracks like DxDxD and Get the Treasure and Sing Your Song are also everything~~

favorite (and least favorite) b-side: I can't manage what I did above where I list every single b-side and to be fair they're probably not all my favourite, even though I love them all, so off the top of my head (and I literally mean just what I can remember this second) my faves are: Area, Body Rythm, Hitchhiking, Aside, Electric, Chemistry, Undercover, Colorful, Runaway, Excuse Me Miss, Love Sick, I Really Want You, Marry You, Heart Attack, Don't Stop, Feel Good, Forever or Never and Savior~ and unsurprisingly there aren't really any b-sides I don't like, depending on my mood there's always something SHINee's done that will work~ Again I mainly did their Korean discography here too but their Japanese music is incredible songs like ABOAB, LUCKY STAR, Tell Me Your Name, Diamond Sky, Downtown Baby, Colours of the Season and 君のせいで, to name just a few, are amazing!

favorite (and least favorite) mv: I love most of their MVs but of course Replay, View, Atlantis and Married to the Music come to mind~ Also Your Number isn't technically an MV but it's literally one of my favourite videos of all time, I could (and perhaps have) watch it a billion times! There's not really MVs I can think of that I don't like, even the ones that are a bit dated now are so iconic that they hold a special place in my heart~

favorite (and least favorite) album: At the moment I won't deny the Atlantis repackage is probably one of my favourites, simply because it's still so fresh and I have listened to the others a billion times. I do really love 1of1 too! I don't really have a least favourite album, my absolute favourite songs tend to be scattered on all different ones so... canny pick one~

a concept i wished they’d try: Gosh, what haven't they already done? I guess it'd be interesting to see them do a darker concept because they've not done a lot of that, something quite intense with I guess Tell Me What to Do vibes but a bit more... I don't wanna say horror based but I don't know how else to describe it????

what i like most about them: Without going off on an emotional tangent, what I love most about SHINee is that their music cheered me up during some really tough times in my life. I really think music can be a very powerful thing and all different people have different relationships with music, for me SHINee was just one of those influences that always made me feel better. They were a great source of motivation, as individuals they've all overcome a lot and the fact that we had people like Jonghyun who talked about his struggles and offered support to his listeners, really making music for not only himself for them too, it meant a lot. I also just love that at this point they're so comfortable and confident in who they are, they're no longer making music for wins and to stay on top of other groups, they've worked hard and accomplished so much, they have a supportive and consistent fanbase and I think they can really just enjoy the whole thing a lot more? The music they make is fun and powerful and interesting, they push boundaries as individuals and a group, and they just get better and better~ They set the standard, honestly~

I had so much fun playing with you and I felt like I could tell you anything without it going anywhere. I’m SO sorry for turning on you, I do wonder still if it was the right decision but we all know that you would win if you made it this far! I love you and I’m sorry and aren’t you proud of me for not breaking our snap streak? I’ve done pretty good for 30 ish days!! I know the night you left it was very chaotic and honestly i didn’t even know what was happening...but i know you kinda had like some deals with different people? Idkk lolll but it was super nice playing another game with you and you were def one of the people i was closest with
