HOTD 1x06: First time
Is it me or it is the first time that we are seeing Rhaenyra’s ladies in waiting.
It’s about time!
Where were they when she was younger? I don’t believe they would have left her to dress herself all alone.

Been reading your blog for a while so I thought I would pick your brain for a bit. This Moiraine/Siuan train ride they are taking us on seems complicated and convoluted for dramatic purposes. Some things are problematic with 2x07 for me
1. To be honest I read this one on another blog and it got me thinking. Moiraine swore on the oath road as « Moiraine Sedai ». But in 2x07 Siuan orders her with « Moiraine Damodred » it seems a rather glaring mistake considering how very specific words are for the aes Sedai
2. Siuan goes alone to confront Moiraine in the cave or whatever, where Moiraine is opening a waygate. Does the amerlyn really go anywhere alone? Ever? This one I didn’t understand. Even being left alone with Moiraine in the hall in 2x07 seems to be shocking but she insists.
3. We have Lan telling Rand about Siuan, how good she is, from humble beginnings and blah blah and then cut to her shielding him. He doesn’t trust anyone but at the end of this episode he trusts Moiraine fully
4. We see Moiraine and Siuan in their personal relationship or where Siuan is the amerlyn. The power dynamics are different. In the former when Siuan is just Siuan the dominant one is Moiraine. We see it in the hut, and in the flashback. In the latter situation it is Siuan by virtue of being the Amerlyn. In their final scene Siuan is the Amerlyn not Siuan so the scene does not come off as personal
5. The scene where Siuan orders Moiraine to close the waygate: WE know they are lovers. But the way the scene was played out, there was nothing overtly pointing to that to Rand who was the only witness to it. Even the mention of love was vague, how a good friend would mention the years they have known each other. None of the heart wrenching betrayal of actual love, no immense shock from Moiraine after 60 years or whatever together. Siuan has tears because she is physically hurting Moiraine through the order. These two communicate in person well from the little we have seen. They get into things, especially Moiraine. She talks, explains and Siuan listens then replies. But here the replies from Moiraine are short, vague, lacking detail….exactly how she replied to the amerlyn in 1x06. It was just weird for me
Maybe me takes are totally off but this was a very strange way for things to play out. And I have confused myself along the way so good job if you managed to reach the end of my ask !
Thanks for the ask anon!
Here’s my best attempt at answers to your questions:
1) I think the oath binds Moiraine. Sedai is an honorific, like Prof or Dr. If you agree to something you agree to it whether you are called by your honorific or not. I’m calling on some New Spring knowledge here, but Moiraine has a complicated relationship with being a Damodred. And I think Siuan calling her Moiraine Damodred in that scene is meant to evoke a feeling of coldness and to bring in the baggage of Moiraine’s house. It’s a contrast to the tender sweet teasing Lady Damodred in the first scene. Tldr, oath binds Moiraine no matter which of her names or titles you call her.
2) I suspect Siuan rarely goes places alone and asking to be alone in the hall with Moiraine could raise suspicion. But Siuan doesn’t want anyone else to know about the fact that she and Moiraine have been secretly on this mission for 20 years, hence the secrecy. Siuan wants to confront Moiraine and she wants privacy for that.
3) Rand’s trust in Moiraine is one of the best things in this episode. I think part of it is Moiraine protecting him, but another part is her trusting him. She trusts him to unshield her. She trusts him to see her so vulnerable- in tears after she unshields him, crying and overwhelmed and thanking him. She is intensely human and vulnerable in that moment. And Rand sees that. This whole season he sees her as increasingly human, and that is something he really didn’t get before. Also Rand shielded is unable to even stand due to the weight of it. He felt that pain and then understood Moiraine felt that for months all while fighting to protect him. I think that changes how he looks at her too.
4) I think in the last scene Siuan is putting her mission above all else. She is doing what she thinks is right to save the world. And yes now she’s Amyrlin, but I think her commitment to this has been as steadfast as Moiraine’s for twenty years. Siuan chooses the world despite the potential for that choice damaging her relationship.
Regarding power dynamics what I see is that in public of course there is a show they put on. Siuan is the Amyrlin. And also she and Moiraine are putting on a show of hating each other. In private I think there isn’t a power differential. They are partners. They are equals.
5) I think Siuan outside the waygate either thinks Moiraine has an awful plan that is potentially very dangerous or maybe thinks Moiraine is a darkfriend (I’ve read compelling arguments for both and think either is plausible, though I think the former is more likely for reasons I’ll refrain from explaining). Siuan feels intensely pressured to get Moiraine to stay and not walk through the waygate. And so Siuan did what she felt she needed to when she forced Moiraine to close the waygate. Is this the best plan? Probably not. Things are blowing up around Siuan very quickly (and have been since Lan showed up saying he spilled the secret they shared for twenty years to Alanna and company, which forced Siuan’s hand), and so she acts decisively, even if it means hurting the trust between herself and Moiraine.
And let’s be honest, last season Siuan and Moiraine decided very quickly that the best plan was to go to the eye of the world with five kids even though this meant killing innocent people. They are both ruthless and singleminded in their pursuit of trying to save the world. I agree that forcing someone to channel is bad, but is it as bad as the fact that they both are fully on board with murder for their cause?
I think these are two women who fully believe their mission is literally about saving the world. They sacrificed their own happiness for it. And this scene is heartbreaking because now they disagree about how to save the world, which puts them in conflict with each other.
Moiraine looks very angry in that scene to me, but I think she understands that Siuan is doing what she thinks she must. Just as Moiraine thinks she is doing as she must when she walks through the waygate and leaves Siuan bleeding on the ground.
I firmly think this isn’t the kind of hurt that is irreparable for them. I think they did the same thing. Put the mission about the other. Put the mission about the person they love most.
Siuan is crying because she hurt her wife, who she loves so much. She looks genuinely heartbroken to have to do this (and I think she feels she has to). I think there was a fight/discussion they would have had if Lanfear didn’t show up. Because people who have been married for sixty years fight and yell and then talk things out and still love each other. Especially when, as much as it might hurt or feel like betrayal, they both would have done the same if they were in the other persons position.
Regarding Moiraine’s vague answers - yes this comes back to bite her in the ass. Communicating with Siuan would have been very helpful this season (I could write an essay about Moiraine not disclosing the stilling to Siuan because it’s telling about Moiraine’s mental state and so so heartbreaking. I have so many feelings about it. But at the risk of this post never ending I’ll refrain). Moiraine has made some bad choices this season, because she’s been desperate and depressed and traumatized . She’s trying her damn best. And so is Siuan.
Hopefully we’ll get more time with Siuan next season to put her decisions and pain in context. I do think this is an episode that reminds us that Moiraine and siuan didn’t choose this mission. They didn’t even want adventure like their book counterparts did. They wanted peace and a life together. But they heard the prophecy and did their duty.

Suuuper long rant about The Cleaning Lady and armony because I'm sorry, but I'm just really disappointed with the energy this season had. But hey, if you enjoyed season 2, then that's amazing! I'm genuinely happy for you and I hope you can continue to enjoy the show!! These are just my thoughts:
So I haven't watch episodes 2x10-12 because 1) I wanted to focus on finals, and 2) after 2x09 I just wasn't feeling it anymore. And after seeing the mixed reactions to the finale, I'm not sure I want to catch up on the show after all. I tried to enjoy this season, I really did. I normally hate love triangles with a passion but I thought hey, if the writers are having a fun back-and-forth seesaw motion with it as they put it, maybe I can have fun with it too.
The thing about season 1 that really got me hooked was that it was SO DIFFERENT. The story, the characters, the entire atmosphere and aesthetic was so unique compared to other shows I had seen. And most of all, it had SPICE to it. A mother who will risk it all for her son and a gangster who learns to open up his heart and falls hard for this woman. Incredible concept. Classic beauty and the beast story and enemies-to-lovers trope that I will never get tired of.
Thony and Arman's chemistry was unlike anything I'd ever seen before. There was a passion and fire there since the very beginning, and the fact that these two went through all those different stages of "please don't kill me" to "maybe you're not so bad" to "you're not the man I thought you were" to "how could you betray me" to "I trust you with my life" and finally "we're in this together" was just ugh. It was so good!!
I rewatched armony scenes from season 1 so many times, I listened to Thony singing "Someone to Watch Over Me" on repeat. I'm sure it was the same for a lot of viewers as well. I loved the soundtrack composed by Mark Isham.
I loved the progression of looks Arman gave Thony throughout the season. I loved their teamwork. I loved them finessing the FBI. I loved that Arman cried in 1x05 because he thought Thony betrayed him and in 1x06 when he cried FOR her. I loved that 1x07 opened with a freaking musical number. I never expected that from this kind of show and it surprised me in the best way! I loved the vulnerable and earnest dance scene in 1x08. I loved Arman tapping out the numbers in 1x10. The tension was palpable. This show had me hooked. It made me feel things and I was so happy to have found something new to obsess over. I LOVED season 1.
And went it comes to sequels, of course it's never going to be the exact same because the writers have had a lot more time to work on the first installment, to really polish it up and make it the best version it can be before it even gets pitched to a company who will invest in their idea. So I understand that for season 2, the showrunners didn't have as much time to develop it. That being said, it is no excuse for the mediocrity that was season 2.
Whereas season 1 was unique and fresh and spicy and heartfelt, season 2 was monotonous at best and downright stressful at worst. The fast-pacing was them trying something different. I get it. But I stopped enjoying it because it got real old real fast.
I've seen a lot of criticisms that the passion between Thony and Arman doesn't seem to be there anymore, and I agree to some extent. I wasn't expecting them to kiss and have sex or confess their love for each other, because there were still a lot of obstacles in their way and that's realistic! But the pacing of their relationship was so odd that at times I was wondering why they even tolerated each other's presence. There were moments where you could still sense the chemistry, but those moments were few and far in between. Where did all of that magic from season 1 go?
I liked that Thony and Arman didn't get together at the end of season 1, because even when you put the whole infidelity part aside (which never bothered me because come on this is fiction), despite the chemistry, attraction and tension between the two of them, there was still a power imbalance there. Arman was Thony's boss, and Thony was very much dependent on him, most obviously financially. Their conversations were mostly about money and Luca. I feel that 1x02 and 1x03 did the best job in exploring Arman's past and his relationship with Thony as a man rather than as her savior. And yes Arman came to rely on Thony and trust her as well, but I never got the sense that they were truly equals until the end of the season.
Season 2 came around, and Arman was at his lowest point, working for Kamdar who treated him like dirt, and he was more and more ashamed of who he was becoming. I thought, "ah I can see where they're going with this! Arman and Thony are now on the same level and they're going to build each other back up!" But no. They just end up running drugs and spend the entire season trying to pay off Kamdar. Maybe I was just interpreting it all wrong and was picking up on the wrong things, but hey, the viewers picked up on the concept back in season 1 that maybe Nadia and Arman never truly loved each other, which would have been really interesting to explore and we could see how their marriage starts to fall apart. But it turns out they do love each other and they have problems because... *squints at smudged writing on hand* Nadia's possessive ex suddenly wants her back??
And despite the showrunners insisting that Arman and Thony's relationship is never going to be a full on romance, I call bullshit. You cannot deny that people were watching the show for the romance, filled with all the angst and sexual tension. Whenever I see the showrunners talking about how armony is platonic or that their bond is deeper than love, I cannot help but think that they feel bitter that people are not watching their show for anything else besides armony. Like Jesus Christ it's okay that people started watching because of the romance. It means you were doing at least one thing right, you should take it as a compliment.
I'm getting way too heated about this lol, but if this show ends up getting greenlit for season 3, I'm not even worried about Thony and Arman getting together at this point. I don't think I even care anymore. Who knows if the writers are actually going for a slow burn, because they seem to have a different idea of their relationship than the viewers do.
What I'm worried about is the writers getting into their heads thinking that their storytelling is amazing and the choices they made in season 2 were justified, therefore they're on the right track for a third season. Because honestly that is the impression I'm getting from them. I have only read snippets from interviews that people have been posting online, because I personally don't care to read interviews. If the writers need to explain OUTSIDE THE SHOW the decisions they made, that's a big red flag to me. I've seen it before too many times from my favorite media. I really hoped The Cleaning Lady showrunners would be different.
And it just boggles my mind that they're patting themselves on the back and thinking they've delivered the most mind-blowing season with all their twists and turns and high stakes, because they haven't. Season 1 to me was mind-blowing. Season 2 turned into your average crime drama with drug trafficking and using the same plot elements over and over again. Every week I just ended up rolling my eyes thinking "oh boy, Luca is in trouble AGAIN. Thony is asking Arman for help AGAIN. Marriage problems AGAIN. Working with the FBI AGAIN."
Naveen Andrews and Eva De Dominici were both really charismatic and brought a lot of fun energy to the season, and I'm happy that Eva De Dominici got more screen time because Nadia is just a really fun and interesting character. No hate to Elodie Yung and Adan Canto in the slightest. But only a few episodes into the season and I ended up watching the show for Nadia and for Kamdar. How can that be? When in season 1 I was on the edge my seat, glued to the screen, watching the show solely for the two main leads? I'm sorry but I'm just not feeling it anymore.
Again, if you liked this season, I am super happy for you that you were able to get joy out of it! I sincerely hope you will continue to feel that joy if they announce season 3. Maybe my opinion will change over time, maybe the writers will get back on track. In the meantime, I'll probably just stick to rewatching season 1 and make up my own story of what happens after in my head.

While the lily orchard review didn’t do anything like calling the show bad (they actually praised it a lot but for some strange reasons imo) they did miss a lot of the main points of the show and lightheartedly insulted people who were making angsty fanart of it (they also didn’t credit the artist which was odd) I think they had only watched until season 2 at that point but season 2 was still pretty intense even if it wasn’t as bad as 3 and 4 so I don’t understand why they called it a “Saturday morning cartoon” because it clearly has an overarching plot. One of the quotes taken directly from the video is “There’s nothing in the plot that’s going to shock you or make you think about the human condition.” They said that people making the show seem dark were missing the point of the show. That’s pretty much it I think which isn’t too bad but it does not give the show credit for how they handle a lot of stuff imo
Okay so, watching s1 of the show? I totally understand the "saturday morning cartoon" perspective of LMK. That's what it is at the beginning—I have a half written meta in my drafts about LMK and "saturday morning cartoon" type tropes.
However, I also argue that s2 begings to deconstruct those tropes—take for example 2x05 "Minor Scale". That's an episode with what I would consider to be a tropey plot: "Oh no! The main character gets shrunk!". But, unlike a lot of previous episodes (like 1x06 being the "racing episode" or 1x02 being the "Main character is overworked and turns to a sketchy solution to fix their problem" episode), Minor Scale shifts us away from these monster of the week type plots. The whole reason MK shrinks to begin with is because he's belittling himself ("Maybe if someone was here to teach me! 'Oh you'll figure it out bud, just think little!' Ugh, like I could do this on my own."), which in itself is already a unique way to implement this sort of trope. But, not only that, rather than a little tease and a subtle feeling of the heroes continually losing like in the beginning of s2, the Lady Bone Demon reveals herself directly to MK. She manipulates MK, she gets inside his head, she makes him question his worth to Monkey King.
This pattern of "everything starts out normal and then dips into something darker" continues for the rest of s2. 2x07-2x10 all start out like you would expect—monster of the week "saturday morning cartoon" adventure set ups—that then take a turn for the worse during the episode.
Like, don't get me wrong, s2 isn't like s3, and I'd say it takes until s4 for LMK to truly deliver on everything it's set up, but s2 still has plenty. Minor Scale (STRAIGHT fate vs freewill directly into the veins with MK literally running away from the narrative), Macaque's shadow play ("Heroes inevitably bring darkness to those they hold dear" *sobs* THEY WEREN'T LYING ABOUT THAT), Sandy's sincere belief that helping his friends is where his true value lies (yet he breaks his vow to never fight again), MK's desperation in 2x09, LBD's inevitable victory.
Honestly, watching the way in which MK's mental illness manifests in the first 2 seasons makes even s1 of LMK unique. I remember watching Bad Weather (1x01) and being surprised that MK was so down on himself after the "I'm invincible!!!" facade fell.
But, ultimately, LMK starting with "saturday morning cartoon" tropes and then slowly transitioning into the darker and more plot focused episodes is completely on purpose. The start of the show, the "monster of the week adventures", is the home MK wishes, but cannot, return to. That simplicity and innocence turning to complexity and impiety is part of MK's "coming of age" story, and it's why I like the show.

911 Lone Star Rewatch: 1x06
Wow. So I completely skipped over posting my episode 6 thoughts. So ignore that 6 and 7 were posted out of order... I promise I watched them in order!
Our first Billy Tyson episode!! Everyone's favorite bastard. Honestly, love to hate that man. And would love to have him back in season 5.
Carlos is such a gentle man. That is all.
These two ladies calling themselves TNT, while we all know that the real TNT doesn't show up until next season.
I LOVE how realistic this show is about what it's like to be in your 20s. Like Mateo with his several, slightly awful roommates. TK having to literally start over with most everything in his life at 26. None of them have all of their shit together and it's beautiful.
TK in those mustard sweatpantssss <3
Billy Tyson. He's such a little weasel, but I find him so thoroughly entertaining. He has charmed me. I'm charmed.
I kind of forgot that they tie Michelle in with Billy by making them exes. Even though they never have them actually interact on screen.
Them calling Mateo probie is so great. Especially thinking about how close they all get in the later seasons.
The interaction with the little girls on the scary dog call is so good. When they call Owen sir and he makes a point to tell them they are very polite. So cute. Plus the little girl telling TK his muscles are big and TK having almost no reaction.
It's very interesting that Michelle always calls Nancy by her last name and Tommy always calls her by her first name. Same with TK.
The puppy's name is Peanut!!
I lowkey forgot that Mateo is a dreamer. They really didn't do much with that fact... well I guess they do in the double trouble episode.
So the call with the ashes, the one guy goes to say "it's colder than a witches tit" and he gets cut off before the end because obviously they cannot say tit on network TV. And that little gimmick of cutting someone off before they say a curse word they are technically not allowed to air, I wish they would use it with TK. Because I know in my heart of hearts, that boy uses some colorful language.
So, probably unpopular opinion, but I love cigars. I don't smoke them, never have, but my dad does. So I have very nostalgic feelings about them. And I love the smell of them.
It's interesting because Owen is such an open and vulnerable person. And so it's completely natural for him to share his diagnosis with Billy. Like it makes sense, especially after he found out that Billy has gone through something similar. Even if it was a bad decision in hindsight. I don't know that I can fault Owen for it.
The comment that TK makes about mineral water in this episode, makes it pretty clear that the team knows TK doesn't drink. But they obviously don't know the scope of why TK doesn't drink... I wonder what the assumptions were. Or if TK gave them a different reason.
Also TK looked so eager to hug Mateo in that scene after his test and the camera like cuts away before TK even gets to go hug him. Sad.
What's up with men calling other men 'pretty boy' as an insult.
Want my job? Come and take it.
10/10 once again! Crazy! Also totally forgot that the Billy stuff goes on for two whole episodes.

I so share your opinion on the word butcher and the meaning for Geralt and I hate the writers for choosing that particular word. I can't accept that they don't associate it with racism bc that was the whole point of the first episode and they made it obvious how much Geralt hate being called like that. But the sad truth is that seeing some of Lauren's tweets she really seems clueless with such things. And knowing what happens at the end of the lady of the lake, it makes it even worse. Also I don't understand the people who wanted Geralt to ask for forgiveness for his behavior in 1x06 but are completely fine with the song. One was having a bad behavior towards a person privately, he was lashing out and he definitely should ask for forgiveness but it was a private fight, no call for hate for jaskier. The other was telling to a crowd that hates the witchers and considers them monsters, that in fact they are monsters. I hope they revisit that in the future but I doubt it. Thanks for your metas.
Thank you!
I find it so interesting. Geralt and Jaskier’s conflict is like a Rorschach blot test for viewers. I mean, all art is. But how we respond to fictional conflicts has everything to do with our own personal flaws, experiences, and traumas.
For example, that scene on the mountain and how someone responds to it, usually says something about whether that person is typically the person who loses their temper or if they are the one who people have lost their temper on.
And to complicate it further, how do people feel about the relationship up to that point? The big theme of their relationship is that Geralt refuses to call him his friend. He refuses to admit he likes him, and even refuses to use the word.
So. Do you (the general you) think that Geralt very obviously cares about him and is just being grumpy? Or do you feel that Geralt barely tolerates him? That probably depends on your own values or expectations of friendship.
Then FURTHER complicating THAT is the fact that there is little actual development of that friendship “on screen”. The friendship is drastically underwritten relative to the emotional role it must play. So we are all operating from different impressions of what that relationship is like day to day.
I have been on witcher Twitter, Witcher tumblr, ao3 and (until recently) discord almost every damn day since the show came out. So I have seen every possible characterization and opinion on their conflict. And at this point in the fandom, there has been backlash, backlash to the backlash, and another round of backlash to that as far as how people feel about, or characterize it.
But I digress.
Then we finally get S2 and we find that Geralt actually left him on the mountain and hasn’t returned to find him or apologize the entire time, and Jaskier is singing Burn Butcher Burn, a song that I find (I’m with you on this one) completely inextricable from racism and bigotry.
So.
If I were to acknowledge and perceive Burn Butcher Burn, here is how I see it “in world”. (this is not an endorsement, babes I’m just talking)
You know how someone is mean to you and you lose it? Maybe stuff has built up or you’ve got other shit going on? So you react with such disproportionate spite that you INSTANTLY lose all high ground? Two second ago you wanted an apology and now your dumb clown ass has to grovel? Lmao
That’s how I see this. So now you know my very personal individual reaction to it based on my own psyche.
Geralt said some cruel shit. That sucks. It’s not ok to yell at people you love and talk to them that way. An apology would have been in order. I personally hate being yelled at with my whole heart and soul. But if I love someone enough to be friends with them for 20(!) years, I’m gonna forgive someone a mistake in the heat of the moment. People make mistakes.
Now we find out that Geralt apparently left him there without saying a single word. That’s worse. He would have a long way to go to make up for that. If Jaskier didn’t want to he his friend anymore that would be his decision.
But Jaskier?
Burn Butcher Burn???????? Since we have established that I associate that with racism and bigotry against Geralt, and it is unquestionably associated with one of his worst traumas this side of the trials, I literally cannot think of many things more singe-your-eyebrows off cruel. Joey played it with such amazing grief and emotion. But even so. How long was he singing that? How many people did he sing it to? Over and over and over? And publicly?
The facts of it can’t overcome even that gorgeous performance.
It is, for me, from my perspective, unthinkably cruel.
I’ve had people say to me “haven’t you said anything out of cruelty?”
And to that I’d say two things. First, haven’t you ever loved someone so much that no matter how you break up, whether they are in your life or not, there is always a part of you that will protect them? Have you? I have. And the second and most significant bit it…if bigotry is not in you, it doesn’t matter how hurt or drunk you get, it still ain’t in there.
So again, we’re back at the various ways you can look at the word Butcher.
So. If I have to put this “in world” I have to believe that either Jaskier doesn’t make that connection, or is in such grief that it’s like a fugue state and he doesn’t grasp the reality of what he is doing.
Then if I were writing their reunion, I would have the reality, the full weight of what he’s done just drop on him like a load of bricks the moment he sees Geralt’s face in the flesh.
And he would apologize. And I would write Geralt responding in the most emotionally devastating way possible: by instantly forgiving him.
Yeah. It’s fine.
Because deep down, Geralt has always suspected he is actually a butcher or a monster.
And that has to devastate Jaskier because he has worked SO HARD for SO LONG to get Geralt to see himself as a good man.
And in the end, he is the one that has pushed the ability to do that out of Geralt’s grasp. Because if the friend who loves him most sees him that way the minute he hurts him, well then, it must be true.
I think it’s a long way back from that one. And though Geralt forgives him, he never forgives himself.
But of course I’m not writing the show.

Willow: Yeah, my search isn't turning anything up either. Are you sure this thing called itself The First? Buffy: Pretty sure. It claimed to be the original evil, the one that came before anything else. Anya: Please, how many times have I heard that line in my demon days? "I'm so rotten, they don't even have a word for it. I'm bad. Baddy bad bad bad. Does it make you horny?" ... Or terrified. Whatever.

That Daeron/Mysterious Knight theory is SO GOOD, but they way George hates the Greens make me a little 🧐
If he actually scaped the war, what do you think he did after?? Some crazy theories says that he is the "Hightower" who married Rhaena (I know, crazy)
GRRM fell in love with Daemon Targaryen and HBO fell in love with the Velaryons. Like I said, Team Black is basically GRRM & HBO's Avengers of their favorite - and most marketable - characters to do spin offs. I mean you don't see devolopment on prequel projects for Criston as a Hedge Knight or Daeron and his adventures between 1X06-1X10.
From my experience as a fan since pre-GOT is that often times GRRM gets inspired by other people's interpretations of his material or actors performances. In the beginning GRRM was interested in characters like Criston Cole and Daeron Targaryen. But once HBO started looking for marketability that was when he started changing things in his lore to fit to HBO/WB's corporate structure. Which, is why I don't take him serious as a author a lot of times. Cause everything post 2015 he's written has been based on "What can I adapt into live-action" rather than what would make a good story.
It was easier to rewrite the Greens as the bad guys when in ASoIaF the Greens are remembered as the Heroes of the Dance. He also changed Daeron from an alpha chad who everyone in the Seven Kingdoms was begging to be their kings into a wall flowers who has moments of brilliance but is now kinda dainty and unsure.
Not because he changed his mind, but because the corporate people in HBO told him that their "heroes" in the new series had to be diverse and inclusive. And thus all of Team Green has to be bad guys in some way so that people can root for "Girl Bosses" and "People of Color" ... which as someone who is not white, I find that shit more racist than anything else.
Now, it seems that after the performances by the Green cast of Season 1, GRRM wants to go back and flesh out Team Green and tell stories with them. In particular, GRRM wants to go back and expound on Daeron's story, insisting that he'd a very important character and that there is something important to tell with him.
I'd like to think that GRRM got his balls back from HBO and told them shove it, and that he's taken back control of the franchise in some way. But then Sara Hess got re-upped for another season and she and her shit writing and character work is about 60% of all the problems that plague "HOTD". Not to mention that she is constantly going out to give interviews and saying the stupidest shit.
I shit you not, she did an interview recently where she talked about how she and Olivia Cooke talked about Alicent and Rhaenyra doing sexual things when they were kids ... like as little girls .. and SHE SAID SHE LOVED THE IDEA!
What the fuck is wrong with these people?!
Just shut the fuck up!
If I was running a project and I saw one my producers tell the world that she loved the idea of two little girls experimenting sexually ... She'd be out on her ass so fast she wouldn't be able to steal supplies from her desk.
Anyway ...
My theory is that Daeron survived the war and went to Dorne where he fell in love with the Lady Dayne of Starfall and thats where the Daynes get their silver blonde hair and violet eyes from ... and their pension for naming their girls with first letter starting with "A" in honor of Alicent.
And that when Makar Targaryen married Lady Dayne during the Blackfyre Rebellion that their kids are the first reunion of House Targaryen - the Greens and Blacks combined. Which is why all of Makar's children run the gambit of Targaryen outcomes - Mad, Drunk, Intelligent, and Brave - With Egg (Aegon V) being the most like Daeron and Alicent.
That's my theory.

okay this is just the first couple watch throughs (and I haven’t been able to figure out any of the text but) here are my initial thoughts of what I think I can identify on the map in the new TDP S4 intro
First to get the Obvious ones out of the way
What looks like baby / a much, much younger Aaravos, close to Ezran’s age if not a little younger
Tumblr media
Then we have Sol Regem at the top of the map, the same way we have Thunder / Avizandum at the top of the Arc 1 map
Tumblr media
The constellation below Sol Regem on the right looks like a Bumblescorp, which Claudia famously mentions in 1x06 to Viren (a joke set up for the “If you must make a choice between Soren and the egg, choose the egg”)
Tumblr media
The constellation to the left of Sol Regem looks like a Sunfire dragon like Phyrrah, the one the boys and Rayla rescue in 2x07 and returns in 3x09 for the battle
Tumblr media
Then a constellation of what I thought at first were fish, but upon closer inspection they’re actually like our favourite grumpy friendly Bait - a pair of Glow Toads (reminiscent of Pisces)
Tumblr media
To the far northeast of the map we have an elven combatant who seems to have a skull at the front - perhaps Garlaf the Annihilator? Although it’s hard to tell if he’s Moonshadow with the horns, so maybe not
Tumblr media
We have some kind of many-legged creature (like the Startouch panda-bear from Tales of Xadia?) playing a string instrument, which could be a reference to the strings in the sneak peek S4 song “Of Love and Loss” that a character in canon apparently will play
Tumblr media
We have birds, a book, and a tree in the far midwest. It makes me think of the tree in Katolis’ courtyard, as that seems to be linked to Aaravos and the Orphan Queen (planted 300 years ago), this map is clearly much older. Trees of knowledge are common in mythology and the two birds represent freedom, family? This also may have increased importance as its the one clearly Nature motif constellation and S4 is going to be Book 4: Earth.
Tumblr media
We have a unicorn near the bottom, which makes sense as they were around aplenty before humans hunted them to near extinction for dark magic, and they’re canonically connected to the Star Arcanum. This is the second constellation with a possible Claudia connection (as she hunted a unicorn for the Avizandum slaying spell) next to the Bumblescorp.
Tumblr media
A very bright star all on its own, near the south east of the future Pentarchy side of the picture. The South Star perhaps that people use to navigate?
Tumblr media
Crown in the very middle of the map, which is clearly important (perhaps why the King of Dragon is always portrayed aligned with it) but the significance / meaning is otherwise unknown.
Tumblr media
What looks like the Mama Banther and Baby Banther that Callum mentions in the “Written in the Stars” skit, or something comparable to wild boars (if very hairy)
Tumblr media
This figure reminds me of Lady Justice due to not really having a face and the robes. It also seems like she’s holding one hand up that’s cupped and one hand straight. It’s similar but it’s hard to tell to a common gesture in historical Christian art that means “Speaker”
Tumblr media
We have a second elf who seems to be Moonshadow, judging by the regalia. It doesn’t seem to be Queen Aditi - but, maybe? She / they seem to be frowning or upset about something and the headpiece is reminiscent of the Sunfire queen crown / Sol Regem’s horns
Tumblr media
Last but not least we have whatever eldritch abomination this appears to be, right in the middle of the Xadian side of the map. It seems to have eyes and something of a face (is even a little similar-ish looking to Aaravos’ insectoid conduit) but I wonder if it’s supposed to be a whirlpool, or even reminiscent of the essence of Magic itself? It gives me eldritch but accurate Biblical angel vibes
Tumblr media
And of course the map has the six primal sources near the bottom, with Star glowing purple at the top
Also worth noting that not all the constellations have little name tags, but the ones that do goes as follows:
Aaravos
Eldritch thing-y
Tree book constellation
Possible baby and mama banther
Lute / violin playing creature
Elf combatant

The problem with just giving my whole M*A*S*H Season 1 viewguide a watch, is that I think I might have been good at this. Because now I’m like, hmm Season 1, best season? Cannot possibly be!! But! !
Anyway I never posted my backstage notes on the first season because I didn’t take any notes on the first season, because I’d just had a minor surgery and was, a little bit rather medicated. Just enough to be like, peaceful dismissive flomp of the hand, wrist Very loose.
But I have thoughts now.
M*A*S*H Season 1 Notes Finally (Deluxe Episode Selection)
1x15 ‘Tuttle’
Phasing out the bits of original score laying over the start of the cold opens was a mistake, this is so worn-in & cozy I could cry
I had missed Hawkeye promptly swooping up this nun’s hand—to clean the engine oil off it with the bottom of his jacket. Overwhelmed that this would be his introduction to anyone following my list.
Also hadn’t realized I’d kicked off with an episode where Hawkeye starts talking about a man getting pregnant within the first three minutes. Starting strong for our BOY (gender neutral)
I’m just so happy. I was right, 'Tuttle' best first episode. 'Tuttle' best episode? I am also so happy watching the laugh track version again, I don’t know! I really can't figure out why I feel it highlights somehow how the early seasons were soooo Catch-22, the idiotic and painful absurdism of the military, and the surreal blitheness that those who can see it take refuge in.
Have I not noticed before that Radar’s cot is just one the beds from post-op, with that cross bar across the head of it
WAIT WE SAW SPARKY HERE???? ‘Tuttle’ perfect intro wow
Tumblr media
Hawkeye does not frequently tent his eyebrows like this and good on it as we might be in a 'some dead, many injured' situation otherwise
Hehe I’d missed early seasons Radar, this sweet but entire little freak...
/
1x09 ‘Henry, Please Come Home’
They are all SO scruffy (even Radar!!!), yet Hawkeye also has his shirt tucked in. Disorienting visual moments to come back to. (Don’t hate it!)
I think about the physical dialogue of this wordless bit of Frank trying to get Hawkeye & Trapper to salute him all the time
I cannot figure why Hawkeye and Trapper are staying sooo low in the bath, up to their ears, besides that maybe they just happened into it on the day and found that it was extremely funny, because it is.
Okay and now I want to know why they are wearing kimonos over full Class A uniforms, with tie. They look so handsome and silly.
Really remembering now why this was my second up: the sequence where Henry takes charge is one of the more interesting and rewarding character bits of early Season 1. It’s important to know early on that Henry can step up, and really cares about his people, as he’s gonna be such a goofy buffoon a lot of the time, but will be called upon for gravity and pathos in certain moments. Seeing him in this episode bolsters those moments so much when they come later.
he literally seduced him
Fun I had just meant to stylize that with a hashtag and Tumblr did this to it. Leaving it!
/
1x06 ‘Yankee Doodle Doctor’
They really talked to generals a whole lot more in the early days huh
Lol wait, he’s only a brigadier general
The scene of Hawkeye & Trapper dancing in each other's arms around their tent is just….they are Together. This was the sixth episode.
TRAPPER JOHN, YOUR GOLDEN RETRIEVER BOYFRIEND: Hawkeye: “Oh, that’s my bad side.” Trapper: “You looked good to me.” Hawkeye: “Oh-oh-oh, you were good in that place! Isn’t that good?” Trapper: [laughs delightedly, beaming]
Trapper, literally, stepping in between them as Hawkeye's bodyguard, Hawkeye playing up the leading lady, “Save your voice, my darling”—THEM IN THIS EPISODE.
It’s funny that this is also our first & only glimpse of Alan Alda, Future Actual Director
Wait, is his name Crandle?? Oh lord I looked this up later: yes. Brigadier Gen. Crandell Clayton. Naming Awards.
Gary laughing when Wayne bonks him on the head with this prop mallet for “anesthesia” as powerful a painkiller as one ibuprofen
It’s just a good little monologue, huh. It gets me every time. Part of it is those haunted silver eyes, and we have the black & white to thank for that, but it’s just a nice bit of writing too, and a nice choice to play it almost calmly (tiredly) direct. He is Looking.
/
1x07 ‘Bananas, Crackers, and Nuts’
This muted, meandering riff on the theme is so so pleasing
Trapper asleep on a bed in the OR, welcome
Oh my god, this episode was their “Our first fight” moment. My babies…<3 Why does Alan keep Hawkeye’s bent knuckle resting against Trapper’s bare arm for half of this vacation planning…<3
Trapper: “I’m worried about Hawkeye.” Frank: “Well I wouldn’t be. He does very well looking after himself.” Margaret: “Very well.” Trapper: “That’s exactly the point, he’s not himself.” Frank: “What’s that supposed to mean?” Trapper: “He seems to be losing touch with reality.” Henry: “I think the last person we have to worry about is Hawkeye Pierce!” Margaret: “I second that.”
You know what. This episode is destroying the scraps that remained of my own sanity. I’m ruined maybe most by Trapper jumping on the idea of “he looks after himself” as a worrying sign of self-editing. I’m reading into that but also, as Frank asks, what's that supposed to mean? If not something like that?
Tumblr media
Ah this shot of the moon beyond the PA speaker…!
His like, James Dean look up through the forelock of his hair talking about the man he’s in love with…fucking hell, Hawkeye
“You know she dyes her hair blonde? That’s why I died my hair black. I think Frank should have a clear choice.” This joke has always killed me. That’s such good bonkers logic, and also a bit custom-made for Tumblr.
Absolutely adore Frank & Margaret silently conferring with each other just upstage, actually. Something that is really well rendered with them is the co-conspirator angle of being a couple.
“This is the Army, no one can do the best they can!” See I did miss this kind of thing later. This is a whole nuanced essay I need to write about Lt. Colonel Blake to Col. Potter, and it will be so much about the Vietnam War.
I think I’m starting to figure out the difference in early Radar, and it’s that he was still super innocent but simultaneously, crafty. He is constantly, or at least every episode in my list so far, roped into schemes by Hawkeye & Trapper as like their inside man, which he tends to perform well, for a comedic value of well.
The ‘Bananas, Crackers, and Nuts’ rewrite where the psychologist is Sidney Freedman. Everything goes the same, except of course, Sidney has no previous connection to Margaret. But they still send Radar in trying to make this scheme happen, and Sidney is just so amused watching Radar try to pull something off, sipping his soup surreptitiously, that he goes along with it. He just keeps going along with it, cheerily makes the same burnt-out bulb joke about how “my profession is helping people find their way in the dark,” and then when he finally figures it out of course tries to stop Margaret from undressing, and she flips, but then cracks up at the idea that she’d be trying to sleep with HIM, the opposite of her general type (pun inteeeended), and she actually makes this joke, which cracks Sidney up, partly just imagining himself as a general, so when the boys rush in to catch him they’re just cackling together, and Sidney’s like you know what, this has been entertaining. I’m not taking Pierce right now as it’s clear he has a support system (cut to Trapper and Radar), but I’m gonna be back, to check in on ALL of you. Margaret’s like, I’d like that. :) Frank is like, Margaret?! This is my vision.
(And then the Wouldn’t Actually Happen In Real M*A*S*H But I’d Like It final button is Sidney having breakfast with them all in the mess tent the next morning before he heads out, seeing how they all are together under what passes for normal conditions, and then as he’s clearing his tray outside with Hawkeye just mildly asks, “So, Frank was it?” And Hawkeye’s fork stills over his tray, but already Sidney is just smiling at him and saying “Good choice—I really could have thought you were crazy.” And Hawkeye grins, and Frank comes outside, and they both laugh, and Larry Linville does that little sort of shifting stomp thing that he does over how he keeps walking into spaces where the psychiatrist is laughing and he doesn’t know why. FIN.)
Anyway trying to figure out why this scene with the not-Sidney psychiatrist and Margaret, in real M*A*S*H, didn’t bother me as much as it seems to have bothered lots of others. I think maybe it’s partly because it was never going to get very far, as they were already waiting outside to stop it as soon as it started? So it plays without an air of actual threat. And also that we’re supposed to hate this guy, he’s the episodic enemy, so Margaret’s fury against him is all framed as right & justified & him getting his just desserts. Unlike, sadly, a number of other “jokes” these early seasons, this episode positions a man trying to take advantage of a woman as wrong, punishable even. I think that’s why I was weirdly kinda okay with it. Though on the whole I mean I would have preferred we just, not. If we have to, would prefer the Sidney version I already laid out, OF COURSE.
/
1x11 ‘Germ Warfare’
Hey Oliver Jones was still here in this one too! Godspeed fella, your stay at the 4077 was too short.
Hawkeye, sleeping in a chair so the wounded North Korean soldier can have his cot, whispering “Trap?” without opening his eyes. No note I just like it.
The fucking theremin cue when they start stealing Frank's blood while doing their Dracula bit
“In the morning he will be one of my brides!” Alright.
Larry’s little meow in his sleep, omfg
Hawk stop trying to seduce Frank while he sleeps, this psychological torture is so…subliminal
Truly what makes incorrigible flirt Hawkeye work is that in just so many of his ceaseless attempts to seduce Nurse Cutler and Lieutenant this blonde babe, the joke is on him. He has no sense of shame or self-preservation.
“I’m only paranoid ‘cause everyone is against me.” I’D MISSED FRANK.
They walked back a little Radar being so, so psychic as well
The thing about Frank & Margaret is that while we hate Frank for Margaret (because we know later Margaret), it’s also extremely good that they fully are set up as the counter couple to Hawkeye & Trapper. Like 1000%. Those are the two couples. Constantly engaged in battle.
Was briefly considering if this should have gone before ‘Bananas, Crackers, and Nuts’ in my viewguide, but have decided it’s funnier if Hawkeye hits on Frank so much after the one where he pretends to be in love with him, like it puts the idea into his head.
Wait the boys brought Frank daisies???! Huge Frederick Chilton visiting Will Graham in the hospital tbh
/
1x12 ‘Dear Dad’
‘The Longjohn Flap’ is the first true And They Were All So Cold episode in that it’s the plot, but I was loathe to forget that this one invented being bundled. Hawkeye in his scarf writing this letter to his dad....my absolute origin story.
I MISS GINGER. Her vibes with Hawkeye and Trapper were so good.
Father Mulcahy is So Cute, look at him!
Henry stressfully cajoling his unruly audience, “Let’s just can the jokes, I’d like to get right down to the sex,” did make me laugh
A whole interlude about how Trapper is the strapping sweetie-pie of the outfit, wow
WAIT this was the first time you would have seen Klinger!!??! And he was so rowdy!!! Wow wild intro for him
“Attention all personnel: when filling out GI insurance forms, be sure to state your age and sex at the time of your last birthday.” Innncredible.
What do you think a snail smells like anyway
I’d forgotten that the first time Hawkeye kissed Margaret, just out in the middle of camp as a bit, he then promptly volunteered to go down on her, in so many words. Y’know this is the other thing that makes his pursuit of all the nurses (slash everyone) work: he’s extremely keen on making sure they have a good time. “I’ve certainly done my share to keep up [the nurses] morale,” he wrote earlier, “but I’ve only got two hands.” This apparently is the perfect cocktail for an incorrigible flirt: 1 part complete willingness to embarrass yourself, 1 part complete willingness to be a service anything.
And then of course that scene is immediate followed by one where he makes a joke that Trapper is getting him pregnant. ~HAWKEYE PIERCE~
Hmmm. Hawkeye paused before getting on the chopper and tried to say goodbye to Trapper just in case, and Trapper went “Tell me when you see me!” Aw Trap…
“All the ladies of the ensemble” oh my god...<3
/
1x19 ‘The Longjohn Flap’
I love Radar and Henry so much
It’s actually all of the cots, they’re all taken from post-OP supply huh
Trapper dealing cards into the stove one by one…
It’s just soooo goooood watching Hawkeye comically cave to poor shivering sneezing Trapper, he’s so resistant and such a soft touch at once
Have I ever mentioned in public how much I love Radar's makeshift ear-muffs---surgical gauze layered under his radio headphones---that he uses for multiple season's worth of cold episodes. Man...Now That's Television
‘The Longjohn Flap’ is so perfect. Hawkeye listing out all the descriptors of the long underwear Trapper has just lost (“double weave! semi-woolen!”) while he just sits there in shock, Radar already trying to unbutton them off his chest.
Trapper: “Hey. Look what the giant rodent has on his body.” Why is this line killing me.
Loretta’s bizarre little cold voice is just the greatest, wtf
Y’know, this transition from Klinger, in a bandana but fatigues, trying to blow Frank up with a grenade, to now being outside in a dress in the cold and saying “I’m crazy, ask anybody. Crazy Klinger,” kind of works?
Hawkeye: “Only God knows where they are now…” [Cut to Father Mulcahy bringing a sentry coffee] Alan I want to kiss you on the cheek
It also works as a second Klinger episode that once again his closest relationship seems to be with Father Mulcahy. Incidentally, I’m also seeing where the Klinger & Mulcahy truthers are coming from lately.
“—which we own” Oh so now the 'johns are collective property of the two of you
Hawkeye’s sweet overwhelmed joy when he gets them back, oh my gOD

1x17 ‘Sometimes You Hear the Bullet’
Loretta Swit’s “trying to figure out how to grab crouched-over Frank to move him out of her tent” acting is so, so funny
Loretta Swit’s “pointing where Frank was coming from” acting is, you guessed it, so, so funny
Admittedly, the way Tommy fully seems like Hawkeye’s wild gay friend, is incredible. McLean Stevenson’s reaction to Tommy kissing him though is just the bee’s knees & all the rest of her.
But…this episode does still throw me off a little! Not for nothing is I think their only homophobic joke from Hawkeye? Unless we want to count “If you kiss me I’ll throw up,” but he says that while eyeing Trapper over a sip of his drink so it still just feels flirty ultimately.
“I’d give you a kiss but I…can’t move my head” is just quite good as a line I’ll give you
God I’m so sorry ‘Sometime You Hear the Bullet’, but look at that I’ve just come right back down on you again. It just doesn’t work for me! It’s too quick, you can’t introduce a character I’ve never heard of before, tell me he’s one of Hawkeye’s best friends, and kill him 10 minutes later, and not have me just looking at all the brush strokes and not the picture.

1x21 ‘Sticky Wicket’
“You go right to Major Houlihan, you set your jaw firmly, and you look into those cool, killer eyes of hers and you tell her I’ll be right there.” McLeeaaaaan
Radar waking up Hawkeye is always the cutest. I’m injured.
Sorry sorry to just bag again on ‘Sometimes You Hear the Bullet’, but really, I just feel like its relative emotional depth is shown up in sophistication by even just a few of these other S1 episodes. Margaret going from threatening Hawkeye with a formal complaint in one scene to the two of them working seamlessly together in the operating room in the next, and that’s the point, is so much more real about the nature of living in a surgical hospital camp during a war, if that’s what it is that 'Sometimes You Hear' is supposed to be giving.
Hawkeye, operating: “What’s the score, John?” John, minding the patient’s vital signs: “He’s doing pretty well, considering what you’re doing to him.” I can’t really explain exactly what emotion this inspires in me, but it sure does it
Putting this one right after the episode where he loses Tommy does give Hawkeye’s behavior in this one a specific interpretive flavor. Not sure if I prefer that though; there doesn’t always have to be reasons, you know?
Trapper hauls Hawkeye away from trying to murder Frank by the waist. Just FYI.
Ah and yes also the first time we see Trapper just physically steer him out of the hospital. Hawkeye is upset and Trapper has gone hands-on. Hmm I was probably going to rest easier before I noticed this.
The “I told you to leave me alone, Trapper,” bit, TRULY ...truly
Wait then Trapper ACTUALLY SHOWS UP, with booze. And literally is like, so is she helping? Wow? Wow.
Was this the first one that started on how Margaret is very good at her job
Y’know what, one of S1’s hottest episodes is: ‘Sticky Wicket’. This episode has everything: The very beginnings of Hawkeye & Margaret, Besties. Operating on war victims feeling like it has Consequences. Trapper jilted that Hawkeye left him for two nights, then relenting and being like [literally chucking his cheek] baby at least you came back. :) The first shower scene in my viewguide. McLean Stevensen sleep mask acting. And what's that? Why, it's Radar O’Reilly.

1x20 ‘The Army-Navy Game’
I do love how open Hawkeye always is with his fear. It’s nice.
Had missed before that Margaret is fully just leaning on Trapper as they cower near Henry comma concussed
“Yeah yeah, don’t panic, I’m doing that for everybody. Go inside.” LOVE Leadership Pierce, when it kicks in.
Army brass: “Call me at half-time, will ya Captain?” Hawkeye, amazed, mockingly polite-society: “Certainly.” Army brass: “If I don’t hear from you, I’ll understand.” This Catch-22 shit in this episode is SO GOOD
Wait so was S1 just entirely the Klinger/Mulcahy hours and I just never noticed the pattern
Henry: “One foot, can you imagine!” Radar: “Twelve inches!” Literal lol
Henry: “….It’s whose?” [scene cut] Hawkeye: “The CIA!?” Sublime.
Reading off the flyer: “Give yourselves up. You can’t win. - Douglas MacArthur” It's perfect.
