In his 1941 State of the Union address, Franklin Roosevelt said there was “nothing mysterious about the foundations of a healthy and strong democracy” and that he, along with the nation, looked forward to “a world founded upon four essential human freedoms.” Famously, those freedoms were the “freedom of speech and expression,” the “freedom of every person to worship God in his own way,” the “freedom from want” and the “freedom from fear.” Those freedoms were the guiding lights of his New Deal, and they remained the guiding lights of his administration through the trials of World War II.

There are, I think, four freedoms we can glean from the Republican program.

There is the freedom to control — to restrict the bodily autonomy of women and repress the existence of anyone who does not conform to traditional gender roles.

There is the freedom to exploit — to allow the owners of business and capital to weaken labor and take advantage of workers as they see fit.

There is the freedom to censor — to suppress ideas that challenge and threaten the ideologies of the ruling class.

And there is the freedom to menace — to carry weapons wherever you please, to brandish them in public, to turn the right of self-defense into a right to threaten other people.

Roosevelt’s four freedoms were the building blocks of a humane society — a social democratic aspiration for egalitarians then and now. These Republican freedoms are also building blocks not of a humane society but of a rigid and hierarchical one, in which you can either dominate or be dominated.

Every holiday season a specific image goes viral (you know the one; grandma serving turkey dinner or an homage of same) but usually without context. The Quartet were created as a tie in to FDR’s speech, The Four Freedoms, because there’s more than want that we should be free from.

Freedom of Worship means any faith, even if your faith involves spaghetti or magic underpants. Just keep out of my life. “Each according to the dictates of his own conscience” is a cornerstone for me. Don’t force boundaries on me based on your sacred texts because they’re not my sacred texts.

Freedom from Fear is everything. Some who are well fed live frightening lives. Fear does damage that can be hard to spot or screams out loud. No one should ever feel fear.

Freedom of Speech is harder to rationalize, mainly because it’s used as a protection for dangerous, inane rantings. Not every speech should be free. Not incitement to violence, especially.

Freedom from Want epitomizes Thanksgiving and the vast feasts we consume. Like Christmas, New Years, Easter, we go to extremes one day when many are hungry on non-holidays.

The first is freedom of speech and expression--everywhere in the world.

The third is freedom from want--which, translated into world terms, means economic understandings which will secure to every nation a healthy peacetime life for its inhabitants-everywhere in the world.

The fourth is freedom from fear--which, translated into world terms, means a world-wide reduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbor--anywhere in the world.

After FDR’s death, one of the postage stamps issued to honor him reflected that 1941 speech.

New York Times columnist Jamelle Bouie suggests that the contemporary Republican Party has a warped set of freedoms. (emphasis added)

There is the freedom to control — to restrict the bodily autonomy of women and repress the existence of anyone who does not conform to traditional gender roles.

There is the freedom to exploit — to allow the owners of business and capital to weaken labor and take advantage of workers as they see fit.

There is the freedom to censor — to suppress ideas that challenge and threaten the ideologies of the ruling class.

Of course it’s billionaire straight white men who ultimately get to do the dominating – either by themselves or through their pawns.

Republicans are still trying to repeal the reforms of the New Deal and the Fair Deal. Ron DeSantis and his fellow Floridian Sen. Rick Scott would love to wreck Social Security which has been around since the 1930s.

Republicans are busy trying to rewrite history to avoid offending the snowflake descendants of slave owners.

With Republicans, assault weapons have more rights than school kids.

And those same kids in red states attend schools with heavily redacted libraries and with books which must be approved by fundamentalist and far right censors.

And the age for dangerous jobs in some red states is being lowered so that those poorly educated kids can work at minimum wage jobs for businesses owned by GOP megadonors.

Women in GOP-World are primarily baby-making machines who must serve the patriarchy.

Republicans offer freedom only in an ironic Orwellian way.

Lee finds out about Four pretty much on the same day the Scooby Gang (Donnie, Mikey, Raph, April and Casey Jr.) do, only he found out due to him being in the hidden city when Four's big solo champion battle was getting broadcasted live, so he got to see his past self's Kraanginess is glorious 4KHD

this little scene happens like, two(??) weeks after the bros' failed attempt to save Four from the battle nexus. Lee just decided to waltz up to Big Mama's office and have a chat with her. Four didn't like this random ass stranger coming up to his mom out of fucking nowhere, like wtf?? he was THIS close to ripping off Lee's throat when Big Mama told him to stop

Lee's 100% ready to bargain with Big Mama about letting Four go, even saying that he'll take the boy's place as champion, or work for her to - idk - "buy his freedom" or something like that, but Big Mama isn't letting that happen. Four's her son dumbass, she isn't gonna let him go

but she does, however, hold Lee up to his deal of agreeing to work for her...
