Goin down

Went down a longer string of connections before I got stuck this time! Figured stringing them together would be better than separate posts.

Found an elevator down to a mall(?) and rode around here. I hate it! Just like a real mall, lol. I do not like the people here, although they do have some funky outfits. Overall, no GameStop, 1/10.

This guy!!! The only reason the mall has any value! So polite, let me sit in their chair, has some lovely decor. This is the Yume Nikki equivalent of a mall GameStop, a little bit of respite from the horrors of shopping. If you find yourself stuck in the mall, look for this guy’s place for some comfort.

The little guys just sitting around really keep me going. I’ve heard this game described as feeling lonely, and I totally get that, but seeing them around and just doing there own thing makes the area around them so comforting. The music really adds to it too, it’s like going over to a friend’s house when things get too intense at home.

does anybody else have this ability?

when i graduated highschool i magically was granted the ability to revisit imaginary places in my dreams like yume nikki style. i can name like 3 locations off the top of my head that i’ve visited in my dreams 2+ times.

unnamed strip mall- i’ve been here 3 times now. it has like 3 stores to it but i always only go in one of them regularly which sells fun party favors and stationary. another is a bounce house type place.

wooden store- ive been here about twice. behind the strip mall is a store that’s made of wood. there’s miscellaneous items i never pay attention to but i once spotted a fawful figure and magnet set there.

department clothing store- i’ve been here twice. it’s got a stuffy, air conditioned atmosphere, like a mall that’s open late at night. it sells racks of early 2010′s, neon clothing that a scene kid would wear. it’s completely silent. i always look though everything to see if i can find anything cool, in which i have not found anything yet.

one of the most profound bits of yume nikki for me i think is how madotsuki likely finds solace in her games. or perhaps even the nature of 8 bit music. or perhaps even both. it’s why i love the fc/famicom world so much. there’s this sense of calm not found in many of madotsuki’s dream worlds. there’s no nauseating vibe of ‘what’s next?’ in an open, lonesome world. there’s a basement dungeon that has that anxious feeling which gets immediately undermined by a cute, chirpy ‘i promise i won’t hurt you.’ melody with a demon npc. and the creature follows through on that feeling with a kiss.

even in the mall staircase world there’s this very real, unshakable fear that Death is Coming added onto the isolate dreamscape. mado finds herself in the confines of a hospital, with one of the npcs (generally of a hostile crowd) seemingly mocking her behind a desk. deeper in, mado finds the flute room. a room which doesn’t hold that disquieting feeling. in this moment everything will be okay.

as someone who suffers anxiety, i understand finding respite in already knowing what happens next. sometimes if you don’t know, you don’t feel as though you have control. 

without that control, it’s difficult to feel stable. 

video games help quell my anxiety because i know what happens next. that’s why it helps to revisit them every so often. someone promising they won’t hurt you in a video game is different than in real life, because you know what happens next. they follow strings of dialogue, actions, etc. people are complex and often times terrifying. they’re not so restrained. 

but even the respite isn’t total. bits of real life trauma are so powerful that they find themselves in our respite. for madostuki it’s hands (the repeated imagery of which brings theories of body horror or even...assault) in the fc world. sometimes a character says or does something that’s probably so innocuous to anyone who doesn’t get certain specific feelings from a specific situation. or even certain imagery. and they can feel so apparent yet blended in with the game. but if you get it, you get it.

and you can’t always shake it either.

Epic Yume Nikki - Dream Diary - Review

Five years ago a reboot of the cult classique video game Yume Nikki was released into the world at the tender age of zero. I have recently completed the game in its entirety, and today....... I share my thoughts.

I remember shatting myself when this game got announced on Steam. I got it on release day! However.... my laptop back then was not strong enough to run it - like I couldn't even move Madotsuki at all and my laptop was torching up. So, super duper sadly, I had to refund it......

And then.... I felt even more disappointed when the initial reviews came rolling in for the game on Steam and they were "Mixed" - and if you are familiar with Steam game reviews, if a game manages to have a mixed reception, it's p much synonymous to shit. I was shocked bro. So since then I was under the impression it was a failed reboot that didn't get the same feel as the original game, or just too new to be seen as Yume Nikki.

Fast forward to recently, when I figured I'd pick the game up again (and now able to play it since I've gotten a new laptop within the past 5 years) and.... I SERIOUSLY wish I didn't listen to those reviews, because now I get that they were probably the crowd that gets too repulsed by reboots/remakes that are too different from the original (Pokemon fans know what Im talking about). Like cmon guys it was made under the supervision of the dude who made the original Yume Nikki themselves

Anyways. HOLY shmoley. I'm serious. This game was SO GOOD!! The art... it was just BEAUTIFUL! In the reboot, you actually get to see Madotsuki's diary (which is full of sketches and concept art as you progress thru the game) and I went ahead and collected ALL the drawings because I love them so much.

I do remember being a little sad that there were less doors (I think?) compared to the original. Number World in the og was my favorite place because somehow seeing a really really long number on the floor was somewhat unsettling. Sadly it wasn't there, but the way the worlds were intertwined and different areas were referenced were SO genius.

Shout out to le new creature made by the original creator, thanks for throwing up blood everywhere when I played hot cross buns on my recorder I mean flute

Likewise with the worlds, there were only a few effects present in the game instead of 20+. Although I do like the Eye with Hand effect being remade into a Hamsa ^___^ I don't usually see that amulet in media which is awesomesauce. And it's fitting.

HONORABLE MENTIONS: Fisherman, cup boy at the mall filled with blood or juice who tripped and spilled everywhere, AND.....

Also, ironically, the scariest part of the game for me was after you make Mado stab the monster on the highway. and she wakes up. And your controls stop working and she stares at you. Yeah I shat myself bro not even gonna sugarcoat it.

Second scariest part was when the last achievement I had to get was to score 5000 POINTS ON SUPER NASU ARRGHH!! (i did it tho).

Ok so now IT'S ENDGAME TIME.

The game actually has two endings and neither of them are the same as the original. And I think I like that. The main ending... it gave Madotsuki more hope, i think - Like escaping those nightmares and getting back to living life happily. Even though the majority of the game is in the dreamworld, the further you progress, the messier Mado's room got and the more she woke up upset. Seeing the main ending made me happy for her :] I also liked the secret ending (had to look up how to do that one), I think this one implied more of an escapism ending. So not as much closure but yeah.

Overall, I really liked this game. It was a great homage to the original, had engaging puzzles, beautiful arts, and lovely OST remixes.

i go by they/she pronouns and i usually like to wear cutesy clothing with slight macabre themes (pills, syringes, bandages all that. look up yami kawaii for more stuffs) these can vary between pastel and somewhat gothic/scene. i am also 159 cm, if that accounts to anything.

my zodiac sign is aries and i am an intj with a 4w5 enneagram. as far as general personality type stuff goes, riamu yumemi and shin sato are pretty on the mark but i suppose i'm just not as open abt me being mentally ill than riamu is considering i just mask my emotions a lot of the time.

and my hobbies consist of astronomy, music compositions, and stag beetle terrariums!

as far as my pet peeves go, i hate sudden loud noises or constantly loud noises as the latter gives me a migraine after awhile. slimy food textures and foods that trigger my gag reflex as well is a massive ick for me too. i also despise slow-paced tasks since they easily make me bored and then i get distracted to do something else

my favorites are relatively spread out, i don't consume much television or movies so it's pretty much games and music for me. i like rhythm games such as project sekai, bandori, and idolmaster and i like games that fall into the rpg genre like pokemon, omori, earthbound, yume nikki, etc. with this, i do quite enjoy visual novels too. as far as music goes, i like a lot of punk rock but sometimes i'll consume other genres (fav english song is love me dead by ludo and atm my fav jp song is shoujo rei by mikitop)

as far as musical artists go, it can vary quite a lot. my most notable ones are probably pepoyo, shinra-bansho, akatsuki records, mcr, and green day.

But at the end of the day, because you realize that the things you fight for are the value you give yourself, you put your pride aside and make peace.

Some of the memories i imagine for you two: A long night spent together at the mall, secretly making funny faces and laughing together while choosing a meal, Renting an arcade saloon for you one night and playing arcade for you laughing together until the morning even though he normally cares about your and his sleep a lot, and "You're Slaying today too, my queen" words given to each other :D
