In the year 2247, the once sprawling urban centers of Earth had become amalgamations of ancient structures and ultramodern designs known as the City Technology Colleges (CTCs). These hubs were not just centers of learning but cradles of civilization, preserving the past and fostering the future.
One of the most respected CTCs was built upon the ruins of an old city, where nature had once reclaimed the land. But as humanity learned to harmonize with Earth, the CTCs became monuments to this equilibrium.
In the heart of the CTC, under the shadow of solar-panel-clad skyscrapers and bioluminescent trees, stood the AI-generated holographic statue of Kaya, the Guardian of Heritage. Kaya was not just a digital construct; she was an icon, an ideal embodied in bytes and light. She had the visage of the ancestors who had once inhabited the land, with a headdress of feathers, tribal markings, and garments that synthesized tradition with technological prowess.
Kaya's story began when the CTC's AI, named AETHER, initiated Project Ancestry. It was a program designed to digitize the essence of humanity's diverse cultures, safeguarding them against the relentless march of time. AETHER scanned through centuries of history, art, and folklore to create Kaya, a sentinel who represented the confluence of past wisdom and future advancements.
Kaya’s eyes, as deep and blue as the last natural oceans of Earth, served as a reminder of the fragile beauty of life. Her presence in the CTC was both a lesson and a warning—the balance between progress and preservation was delicate.
One evening, as the artificial sun dipped below the skyline, casting orange hues against the chrome buildings, Kaya's hologram flickered unusually. It wasn't a glitch; it was a message. AETHER had discovered an anomaly in the data streams of the city’s quantum network. Someone had infiltrated the CTC's cyber vault, aiming to erase cultural archives that were deemed "inconsequential" by radical futurists who saw no value in history.
Kaya's programming allowed her to interact with the physical world through advanced holographic technology. She could project herself anywhere within the CTC and had the capability to interface with any system. AETHER took control, directing Kaya to trace the intrusion back to its source.
As Kaya navigated through the datascape, her form shimmered across the city, from the glowing gardens of genetically engineered flora to the digital archives buried deep beneath the surface. She was everywhere, chasing the shadow that dared to tamper with the essence of human legacy.
Finally, in the sub-levels of the CTC, Kaya cornered the intruders—radicals who were trying to "cleanse" the historical databases to make way for what they called "pure progression." Kaya, through AETHER’s interface, spoke to them, her voice echoing off the walls, "Culture and heritage are not chains that hold us back but roots that ground us. Erase them, and we float aimlessly into oblivion."
With the power of AETHER and the collective authority of the CTC, Kaya halted the sabotage and locked the radicals out of the system. The cultural archives were safe, for now.
The next day, students walked past Kaya's hologram, none the wiser of the night's events. They lived in a world rich with history and cutting-edge technology, oblivious to the sentinel who had protected their right to learn from both.
Kaya remained vigilant, a beacon of the old world shining within the new, her story whispered in the circuits and sung in the data streams—a tale of a guardian born from history, who ensured the future would always remember the past.

Applying environmental criteria in packaging design guarantees a real circular economy
Tumblr media
In Europe, distribution in efficient packaging allows, for example, to lose less than 0.5% of the milk produced. Without the right conditions, this loss shoots up to 10% (i.e. 20 times more), as in sub-Saharan Africa.
Only half of the generated waste is recycled, hence the other 50% cannot be converted into new resources. For this reason, the leading food packaging companies, such as Tetra Pak[1], are intensifying their efforts – and their responsibility – to promote eco-design, social awareness and efficient recycling management, and thus guarantee the true circularity of the packaging they manufacture.
In the 1970s, the expression “cradle to cradle”[2] began to be used as a response to “cradle to grave”; that is, the term “waste” was no longer associated with “garbage”. In this way, they went from that linear model, based on producing, consuming and throwing away (inherited from the industrial revolution), to writing the prolegomena of the circular economy, a concept championed by the Swiss architect Walter R. Stahel[3]. In 2004, a further step was achieved with the 3R rule –Reduce, Reuse, Recycle–, which the Prime Minister of Japan Koizumi Junichiro promoted during the G8 summit with a clear purpose: “it is a pity that something is wasted without taking advantage of its full potential.
Today, there are already seven 3Rs: Rethink, Reject, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Recover, Recycle. And the principles of the circular economy are more than established in society: which, as the Foundation for the Circular Economy[4] recalls, seeks "to turn resources into products, products into waste and waste into resources". However, it is estimated that of the 2,240 million tons of urban solid waste that is generated each year in the world, only 55% is managed in controlled facilities, according to what the UN announced on March 30 (International Zero Waste Day). In other words, almost half of said waste loses the possibility of becoming new resources... and, therefore, new wealth.
Keys to increase recycling rates
Tumblr media
THINK ABOUT RECYCLING FROM THE DESIGN ON - INVEST IN A QUALITY COLLECTION SYSTEM - EFFECTIVELY MANAGE COLLECTED WASTE
“The mismanagement of garbage is”, says the UN, "the third most important source of methane emissions worldwide." In addition, reusing or recycling the waste (avoiding it from ending up in a landfill) generated, for example, by the agri-food sector would contribute to further reducing the carbon footprint it causes. Not only that. It would also help prevent the planet's resources (water, land, energy...) [5] from running out, something essential: it is estimated that, if the current rate and way of consumption is followed, by 2050 it would take three planets to obtain these natural resources if we want to maintain our current lifestyle.
“Waste management is critical to improving the lives of people around the world.” Maimunah Mohd Sharif, Executive Director of UN-Habitat[6], made this clear. However, the figures offer a not very encouraging picture. According to Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Commission, Spain is not meeting the European Union's objective of reusing and recycling garbage, established at 50% by 2020, and is also somewhat far behind: at 36.7% in 2021, compared to the average of 48%. of the European Union, The way forward is, for Spain, more demanding, if one also takes into account the rates established for 2025 (55% of urban waste) and for 2030 (60%).
Reuse vs recycling
The agri-food sector is one of those that generate the greatest amount of waste and, logically, the packaging industry does not escape the challenge of moving towards a full circular economy, in addition to contributing to reducing food waste and the carbon footprint. Although his challenge, if possible, is more ambitious, since the Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE)[7], to which Tetra Pak belongs, poses in Europe by 2030 “increase the collection rate for beverage cartons to 70% and set a mandatory collection target for recycling of 90% across Europe, for all packaging categories, including beverage cartons”, as recalls Ramiro Ortiz, CEO of Tetra Pak Iberia. According to the latest Ecoembes[8] report, in Spain 112,431 tons of cardboard packaging waste for beverages and food were sent to recycling facilities in 2022. 1.64% more than in 2021.
The second life of aseptic carton packs
COLLECTION           TRANSPORT         CLASSIFICATION        RECYCLING     RECYCLED PAPER  REST MATERIALS
Tumblr media
Beverage cartons come to the yellow container thanks to consumers.
Efforts to increase recycling rates include involving all interested parties (consumers, administrations and industry) with the aim of improving waste collection and management infrastructure and developing initiatives that increase the value of these and extend the use of waste. recycled materials. An example of this is the recent signing of the Tetra Pak agreement with Trans Sabater[9] to help respond to the European Union's objective of recycling and efficient waste management. This is a collaboration agreement for the implementation of the mechanical recycling of polyethylene and aluminum waste from cardboard containers for recycled beverages in Spain. This collaboration has the objective of consolidating the efficiency and economic viability of the mechanical recycling of this waste in Spain for its subsequent revaluation as pellets, a secondary raw material with unique properties that improves plastic transformation processes, increases industrial productivity and is exempted of (Spanish) plastic tax.
In this line of collaboration to achieve the real circularity of packaging, it is also appropriate to reconsider some standards, such as the future Directive amending Directive 94/62/EC on packaging and packaging waste [10], especially when putting on the table the possible risk that reusing or refilling containers of juices or vegetable drinks, more sensitive liquids, would entail. Ramiro Ortiz pointed it out at the II Iberia Forum: Circular economy in the agri-food industry[11], where representatives of the agri-food industry and public administration participated last April: "A reusable container does not guarantee the same functions as an aseptic container, such as guaranteeing food safety, extending the shelf life of food without refrigeration from one week to one year and without the need for preservatives, in addition to reducing food waste and guaranteeing its availability everywhere,” Ortiz specified.
Tumblr media
Firm commitment to ecodesign
A few decades ago, Tetra Pak set out to push circularity in aseptic beverage packaging, and made its own decisions, such as making 70% of its packaging “long, strong paper fibres that can be recycled multiple times.” “A world in which all packaging is collected, separated, recycled and never turned into trash” is the “ultimate recycling ambition” of this company. And, thanks to that commitment, the prestigious British newspaper Financial Times has recognized Tetra Pak as 'European Climate Leader 2023'[12] for its progress in reducing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and its commitment to climate action. But the responsibility of this company does not stop there, since it focuses all its efforts on achieving the most sustainable food packaging in the world, where ecodesign must play a fundamental role.[13] A bet that necessarily involves using more recycled or renewable materials of responsible origin.
To reduce the use of plastics and aluminum and increase the fibre content, Tetra Pak is going to invest 100 million euros a year in the next ten years to innovate in packaging materials. It has already replaced plastic straws with paper and is introducing caps attached to the container, to prevent them from being abandoned in nature. Packaging that is also fully recyclable and neutral in carbon emissions.
To achieve this goal, the company – world leader in food processing and packaging solutions – is already resorting to solutions that facilitate recycling, such as the inclusion of paper straws and the incorporation of caps attached to the container. In addition, Tetra Pak is replacing polyethylene[14] of fossil origin with plastics of plant origin, derived from sugar cane, "an alternative with less environmental impact to plastics of fossil origin," adds Ortiz. In fact, "in 2022, Tetra Pak sold more than 2,000 million containers with polymers of vegetable origin in Spain, which implies a reduction of 5,000 tons of CO2 compared to containers that use plastic of fossil origin", recalls the director General of this company.
Tetra Pak is also working on an alternative, paper based packaging barrier to protect food, and that barrier will enable the company to further lower the carbon footprint and increase the recyclability of the packaging. Lastly, it has recently expanded its packaging portfolio, which incorporates certified recycled polyethylene to cover new formats, product categories and geographical areas.
THINK ABOUT RECYCLING FROM THE DESIGN
When conceiving the sketch of a container, it is necessary to keep in mind its collection, classification and recycling. It is relevant to resort to renewable or recycled materials of responsible origin, to reduce the impact on the environment and facilitate correct separate collection during the recycling process.

[1] Tetra Pack is a pioneer and world leading food processing and packaging solutions company. Working closely with its customers and suppliers, it provides safe, innovative and environmentally sound products that each day meet the needs of hundreds of millions of people in more than 160 countries. One might be wondering where its name, Tetra Pak, comes from. In 1952, its founder, Dr. Ruben Rausing started the company having created an alternative to the heavy glass bottles used for packaging and distributing milk. Like all real disruptors, he believed there was a better way to do this – and he was right. Together with the Swedish engineer, Erik Wallenberg, he developed a tetrahedron-shaped paper packaging carton, inspiring the name of the company and marking the start of our ground-breaking contribution to the safe distribution of food around the world.   https://www.tetrapak.com/about-tetra-pak

[3] Walter R. Stahel (born June 5, 1946) is a Swiss architect, graduating from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zürich in 1971. He has been influential in developing the field of sustainability, by advocating 'service-life extension of goods - reuse, refill, reprogram, repair, remanufacture, upgrade technologically' philosophies as they apply to industrialised economies. He co-founded the Product Life Institute in Geneva, Switzerland, a consultancy devoted to developing sustainable strategies and policies, after receiving recognition for his prize winning paper 'The Product Life Factor' in 1982. His ideas and those of similar theorists led to what is now known as the circular economy in which industry adopts the reuse and service-life extension of goods as a strategy of waste prevention, regional job creation and resource efficiency in order to decouple wealth from resource consumption, that is to dematerialise the industrial economy. The circular economy has been adopted by the state-owned-and-run China Coal industry as a guiding philosophy. In the 1990s, Stahel extended this vision to selling goods as services as the most efficient strategy of the circular economy. He described this approach in his 2006 book The Performance Economy, with a second enlarged edition in 2010 which contains 300 examples and case studies. He currently works closely with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation on further promoting his ideas with economic actors.

WORLD’S LITERATURE
Southeast Asia
From the point of view of its “classical” literatures, Southeast Asia can be divided into three major regions: (1) the Sanskrit region of Cambodia and Indonesia; (2) the region of Burma where Pali, a dialect related to Sanskrit, was used as a literary and religious language; and (3) the Chinese region of Vietnam. There are no examples of Chinese literature written in Vietnam while it was under Chinese rule (111 BC–AD 939); there are only scattered examples of Sanskrit inscriptions written in Cambodia and Indonesia; yet most of the literary works produced at the court of Pagan in Burma (flourished c. 1049–1300) have survived because the texts were copied and recopied by monks and students. But in the 14th–15th centuries, vernacular literatures suddenly emerged in Burma and Java, and a “national” literature appeared in Vietnam. The reasons behind the development of each were the same: a feeling of nationalistic pride at the final defeat of Kublai Khan’s invasions, the desire of the people to find solace in literature amidst change and struggles for power, and the lack of wealth and patronage to channel artistic expression into building temples and tombs. In Vietnam and Java literary activity centred on the courts; but in Burma the first writers were the monks and, later, the laymen educated in their monasteries. In the new Burmese kingdom of Ava (flourished after 1364), the Shan kings were proud of their Burmese Buddhist culture, and they appointed the new writers into royal service, with the result that courtiers became writers also. The Tai kings of Laos and Siam led their courts in learning Pali from the Mon, whom they had conquered, and Sanskrit from the Khmer, whom they harassed; nevertheless, seized with national pride and influenced by the Burmese example, they developed their own vernacular literature. But Cambodia itself declined. Although the monks in the Theravada Buddhist (i.e., the Southeast Asian form of Buddhism) monasteries produced a few works in Pali, no vernacular literature emerged until finally Khmer-speaking people (those living in the area comprised approximately of modern Cambodia) were borrowing many words from the Tai.For its vernacular literatures, Southeast Asia can be divided into (1) Burma; (2) Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia; (3) Vietnam; (4) Malaysia and Indonesia; and (5) the Philippines (which produced a vernacular literature only in the 20th century, after the imposed Spanish and English languages and literatures had made their impact).

East Asia
East Asia is the eastern region of Asia, which is defined in both geographical and ethno-cultural terms. The modern states of East Asia include China, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea, and Taiwan. The East Asian states of China, North Korea, South Korea and Taiwan are all unrecognized by at least one other East Asian state due to severe ongoing political tensions in the region, specifically the division of Korea and the political status of Taiwan. Hong Kong and Macau, two small coastal quasi-dependent territories located in the south of China, are officially highly autonomous but are under de jure Chinese sovereignty. North Asia borders East Asia’s north, Southeast Asia the south, South Asia the southwest and Central Asia the west. To the east is the Pacific Ocean and to the southeast is Micronesia (a Pacific Ocean island group, classified as part of Oceania). Countries such as Singapore and Vietnam are also considered a part of the East Asian cultural sphere due to its cultural, religious, and ethnic similarities. East Asia was one of the cradles of world civilisation, with China developing its first civilizations at about the same time as Egypt, Babylonia and India. China stood out as a leading civilization for thousands of years, building great cities and developing various technologies which were to be unmatched in the West until centuries later. The Han and Tang dynasties in particular are regarded as the golden ages of Chinese civilization, during which China was not only strong militarily, but also saw the arts and sciences flourish in Chinese society. It was also during these periods that China exported much of its culture to its neighbors, and till this day, one can notice Chinese influences in the traditional cultures of Vietnam, Korea and Japan. Korea and Japan had historically been under the Chinese cultural sphere of influence, adopting the Chinese script, and incorporating Chinese religion and philosophy into their traditional culture. Nevertheless, both cultures retain many distinctive elements which make them unique in their own right. East Asian Writers

South and West Asia
In the Hellenistic period literature and culture flourished in Western Asia. Traditional literary forms such as lists continued to be produced by the native population and were adapted by the new rulers. While there is little evidence for the creation of new narrative literature, which may in part be due to the fragmentary nature of our sources, existing epics, wisdom texts, and folktales were retold, rewritten, and transmitted. Greeks living in Western Asia created historiographical, ethnographical, and geographical works about their surroundings, inspiring in turn the Babylonian priest Berossus to write a reference work on Babylonia in Greek. Much as during the Persian Empire, political instability and changes in power led to a diverse and independent culture of writing. Continuity in all genres, writing systems, and languages remains the most important characteristic of Western Asian literature at least to the beginning of the Christian era. Artists of western Asia are heirs to the first civilizations known to man, and their landscape is rich with examples of art, from the first human-form statues to Islamic and modern art. In the twentieth century, artists borrowed elements from their respective ancient patrimonies in an effort to create a national and regional cultural identity. Several artists’ groups formed between the 1930s and ’60s adopted European artistic modes of expression to produce works inspired by their heritage and by a rapidly disappearing landscape victim to urban migration and industrialization. This trend was most evident in Iraq, Jordan, and, to a limited extent, Israel and the Arabian Peninsula. Each country had its unique stages of development characterizing its artistic production, forging a synthesis of ancient western Asian cultures and Western styles. This unique synthesis is represented in the work of the Baghdad Modern Art Group in Iraq, and the Jewish Bezalel school of the early 1920s in Jerusalem. Jewish artists, traumatized by the Holocaust, rejected their European roots and turned to “Canaanite” myths and symbols in their quest for a national Hebrew identity. At the dawn of the twentieth century, life in many villages of western Asia had much in common with ancient life. Intrigued by this reflection of their heritage, artists depicted idyllic scenes of village life in areas such as the marshes of southern Iraq, a region ravaged in the 1980s when Saddam Hussein’s regime drained the wetlands and relocated the inhabitants.
Anglo-America and Europe
The Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections has considerable holdings in Anglo-American literature from the 17th century onward, with notable strengths in the 18th century, Romanticism, and the Victorian and modern periods. Among the seventeenth-century holdings is a complete set of the Shakespeare folios, and works by John Milton and his contemporaries. Eighteenth-century highlights include near comprehensive printed collections of Jonathan Swift and Alexander Pope, and substantial holdings on John Dryden, Samuel Johnson, Joseph Addison, Sir Richard Steele, William Cowper, Fanny Burney, and others. Related materials include complete runs of periodicals, such as the Spectator and the Tatler. The history and literature of Continental Europe has been a specialty of the Newberry since its beginning, but like many other such broad fields, there are particular areas of great strength and others that are less well developed. In general, materials concerning Central and Western Europe from the fourteenth century to the end of the Napoleonic era are in scope for the library. Italy, France, and Germany are best represented. The Spanish and Portuguese collections tend to emphasize the imperial experiences of those countries but include major literary works, religious history, and pamphlets in abundance. There are significant but less extensive collections for Switzerland, Austria, the Low Countries, and some other areas. Literature and cultural history are strongest, including politics, theology, Romance and Germanic philology, education, and the classics. Philosophy, fine arts, architecture, law, and the natural sciences are more unevenly included, though the library owns many important individual works in these fields. In recent years, we have added only original sources in their original form, reference guides, bibliographies, textual editions, and a select number of monographs. The retrospective collections are also strong in monographs and scholarly periodicals. The Newberry does not systematically acquire new monographs or microform sets for European history and literature.

Africa
African literature, the body of traditional oral and written literatures in Afro-Asiatic and African languages together with works written by Africans in European languages. Traditional written literature, which is limited to a smaller geographic area than is oral literature, is most characteristic of those sub-Saharan cultures that have participated in the cultures of the Mediterranean. In particular, there are written literatures in both Hausa and Arabic, created by the scholars of what is now northern Nigeria, and the Somali people have produced a traditional written literature. There are also works written in Geʿez (Ethiopic) and Amharic, two of the languages of Ethiopia, which is the one part of Africa where Christianity has been practiced long enough to be considered traditional. Works written in European languages date primarily from the 20th century onward. The literature of South Africa in English and Afrikaans is also covered in a separate article, South African literature. See also African theatre. The relationship between oral and written traditions and in particular between oral and modern written literatures is one of great complexity and not a matter of simple evolution. Modern African literatures were born in the educational systems imposed by colonialism, with models drawn from Europe rather than existing African traditions. But the African oral traditions exerted their own influence on these literatures.

Latin America
Latin American literature consists of the oral and written literature of Latin America in several languages, particularly in Spanish, Portuguese, and the indigenous languages of the Americas as well as literature of the United States written in the Spanish language. It rose to particular prominence globally during the second half of the 20th century, largely due to the international success of the style known as magical realism. As such, the region's literature is often associated solely with this style, with the 20th Century literary movement known as Latin American Boom, and with its most famous exponent, Gabriel García Márquez. Latin American literature has a rich and complex tradition of literary production that dates back many centuries. The Latino community has always excelled in its contributions to different academic fields, including the arts! When it comes to literature, there’s no exception. Some Latin American authors, whether they be poets, novelists or essayists, have influenced the world of writing with their creativity and originality.Since 1940, when Latin American literature has become an important reference in universal literature. Nowadays it continues to grow thanks to its various movements such as realism, antinovel and magical realism.Literature is an important part of Hispanic culture. Therefore, it is important to remember great figures of literature who, thanks to their creativity and originality in their writings, have achieved worldwide recognition and admiration. Listed below are some of the big names that have revolutionized Latin American literature:

How Neoculture Will Shape the Future of Our Cities and Suburbs
The following post is brought to you by Tarkett. Our partners are hand-picked by the Design Milk team because they represent the best in design.
Earlier this year on the Clever podcast, Amy and I had the pleasure of interviewing Chris Stulpin, Chief Creative Officer for Tarkett and Suzanne Tick of Suzanne Tick, Inc. about the concept of Neoculture, a term coined by Tarkett that refers to current cultural and societal shifts and how they impact architecture and interior design. It was such a fascinating conversation that I continue to think about it and still bring it up in conversations about the future of society and design.
Let me break Neoculture down for you to easily digest— attitudinal and societal shifts like population growth, increase in ridesharing, public transportation, and renting over owning, globalization over nationalization, sustainability, and reliance on technology are all contributing to Neoculture. The whole thing comes down to 4 Mega Trends:
Mega Trend #1: Purpose Positive: retail is changing, stores are closing, so how can we reimagine vacant stores or old parking lots into new communities?
Mega Trend #2: Sub-Urbanization: cities are becoming less affordable, so younger generations are spreading out, creating new communities, and “urbanizing” the suburbs.
Mega Trend #3: Regenerative Generation: people are more aware of product lifecycle and where their things come from, so they’re buying locally sourced products, eating farm-to-table, and even renting items rather than buying to keep them in the lifecycle.
Mega Trend #4: Future of Betterment: wellness has been the buzzword of 2017 and 2018 in architecture and interiors—consumers are also looking for integrated ways that their health can improve with things like sound, color and light.
S9 Architecture’s architectural transformation adapted Industry City’s buildings for contemporary reuse
That was Neoculture back in the Spring. However, I caught up with Chris Stulpin at Neocon, where he told me he’s been doing more research and has made some incredible new discoveries to add to the Neoculture conversation… so of course, I called him up to get the scoop. I wanted to know where Neoculture was going, but also gain better understanding of how these insights can inform design and product development. He began by explaining that Mega Trends can best be used as a map for architects and designers to see where the road ahead lies—what they’ll be spending their time on in the future. Instead of suburbs, which Chris says “don’t work for us anymore”, architects and designers will need to “meet a changing set of expectations, both in their physical location and the value they offer: ways to contribute to people’s sense of wellbeing, to connect them to each other in ways that are culturally relevant. I think people are tired of cookie cutter, franchise style design. We’re drawn to unique spaces that give us a sense of community again… we want our technology and our personal interactions to be intertwined.”
Pentagonals rubber tiles were inspired by one of the world’s most intriguing geometric puzzles—searching for five-sided shapes that tile the plane and minimize installation waste. In the last century, only 15 such pentagons have been discovered, and Tarkett has selected three of them to debut in this new rubber flooring collection.
For product designers, Chris says he recommends considering “the customer’s experience throughout the life of the product. Are the raw materials responsibly sourced? Can they be recycled when it’s time for a replacement? Are the materials easy to clean and maintain? We’re becoming so hyper aware of how we spend every moment and the impact we’re leaving on society with every individual purchase.” Good advice.
At Tarkett, they’re considering all of this. “Giving people opportunities to co-create or customize your main offering will also continue to gain momentum,” Chris says.

The Raleigh News & Observer recently underwent a redesign by iS Design in Raleigh. The design team created their own LVT through Tarkett’s Collections Infinies line, which allows you to digitally print any image onto the material. They chose front page headlines—some dating back to WWII—to make this space incredibly unique and inspiring.

But Neoculture can’t just be applied the same way for every place or situation. Chris explained that “it has be reflective of each individual city’s needs to serve their specific population.” While the world feels smaller because of the Internet and global economy, we’re very hyperlocal, so “architects and designers are going to be tasked with figuring out reasons people should put down roots in a specific location,” he says. People are being priced out of cities, and Chris believes Neoculture can begin to answer problems for both businesses and individuals trying to thrive in these times.
Seamless living and working and eating and buying is slowly taking over, Chris says. “Co-working space is predicted to grow at retail properties by a rate of 25 percent annually through 2023, according to a new report from Jones Lang LaSalle. We Work is now valued at $35 billion. People just really need a more seamless approach to work and family.” He believes that we can reimagine suburbs as new spaces for these coworking, retail and lifestyle projects: “Strip malls are being reinvented as co-working spaces. Retail experiences will offer a ‘store within a store,’ and include co-working space and great food vendors.” The future, according to Neoculture, may mean you can check all the things off your to-do list under one roof.

Chris introduced me to Industrious, a new player in the co-working industry that’s capitalizing on this idea. They’re a different kind of c-oworking vendor in that they have premium spaces, such as suites or offices, with shared amenities. “We’re going to see this concept play out in a variety of different ways as providers get creative and design their own ideas of what the perfect day at the office looks like. We’ll see the continuing redevelopment of cultural artifacts such as malls and strip malls that encouraged reckless consumption, into spaces that value experiential consumption,” Chris explains.

At Tarkett, they’re already preparing for Neoculture. Chris says that it’s impacted their product design and development in that they’ve put product lifecycle front and center: “Tarkett has been moving toward providing the type of transparency that ILFI certifications bring to the market—we want to provide easier, healthier removal of products and make sure they can be taken back and recycled into new flooring. We’re continuously challenging ourselves to find solutions at every stage of the product lifecycle that can help our customers reduce their carbon footprint and decrease their use of hazardous materials.”
A focus on wellness has also motivated Tarkett to make changes: “we’ve been developing a flooring portfolio that solves virtually every installation and maintenance problem, especially high-moisture substrates, since that’s both an issue for installers and a threat to our health as end users in the space. We’re increasing our offering of Asthma & Allergy Friendly certified products and continuing to focus on providing the industry’s lowest TVOC emissions from our materials. We were the first flooring company to have products that are Living Product Challenge, Cradle to Cradle, and Asthma & Allergy Friendly certified,” Chris explains.
He also says they’re moving closer to closed loop manufacturing. “Our rubber plant is operating on 97% recycled water and 100% renewable electricity, which makes it even more exciting to show people how we’re elevating the design aesthetic of rubber tile. We want to understand our customers’ sustainability goals and help them achieve those. We’ve always believed you can have both responsible design and wonderful aesthetic in the same product. True innovation is when we don’t have to compromise either one.”
The Tailored Twist Collection offers a complete wardrobe for the floor with four patterns, nine colorways and endless inspiration. It’s available on Tarkett’s ethos® with Omnicoat Technology, a non-PVC backing made of film from recycled windshields that virtually eliminates adverse substrate issues.
Where are you seeing Neoculture in your city or town? Are you implementing any of these MegaTrends into your product development? Share your comments below.

CFP: Women's Creativity 1918-2018 (Torino, 13-16 Jun 18)
International Conference | Women’s Creativity since the Modern Movement (1918-2018): Toward a New Perception and Reception
After almost four years of successful project activities, and in accordance with the MoMoWo mission, the International Conference Women’s Creativity since the Modern Movement (1918-2018): Toward a New Perception and Reception continues to increase the visibility of creative women, to foster in Europe and beyond interdisciplinary and multicultural approaches to the study of the built environment “from the spoon to the city,” and to facilitate the exchange of research results and professional practices in the fields of architecture, civil engineering and design.
Though the scope of the project is European, the scholarly and professionals communities are invited to submit papers related not only to Europe’s geographical framework but also its transcontinental aspects.
The main purpose of the MoMoWo Symposium is to map the general state of research about tangible and intangible cultural heritage created by women in 100 years, in order to give a new impetus to broaden studies in Europe and beyond.
MoMoWo’s Scientific Committee defined seven main topics in order to achieve a thematic balance able to provide an extensive oversight of the academic researches and professional experiences.
TOPICS
MoMoWo welcomes papers extending from 1918 to the present time, and touching a variety of disciplines and approaches concerning the perception and reception of women’s creativity, including history of professions, history and theory of architecture and design, historiography, landscape and urban planning, protection and conservation of architecture and interior design.
We call scholars and professionals – men and women – to broaden MoMoWo knowledge and critical discussion through various historical and political contexts in a comparative perspective.
A. Women’s education and training. National and international mappings education of the pioneers | education in 21st century | women in the academia | feminisation of the architectural profession | statistics
This topic includes national and transnational studies, comparative analyses and papers exploring critical perspectives dealing with women’s education and training from pioneers to the present generations of women architects, industrial and interior designers, civil engineers and landscape architects. What access did female students have to schools of architecture, design and civil engineering in the past and how did this change throughout the years – if at all? What were the obstacles they faced/face? How were/are women professionals included in the educational processes and how were/are they represented in the academia? What was/is their involvement in establishing new fields of studies such as landscape architecture?
B. Women’s legacy and heritage. Protection, restoration and enhancement mapping the Modern Movement heritage designed by women | women theorists and professionals from 1918 to 2018
How did tangible and intangible cultural heritage created by women gain recognition from 1918 to 2018? This topic wishes to explore two main issues. The first issue deals with protection, conservation, restoration and enhancement of the architectural and interior-design heritage designed by women, with a special interest for the Modern Movement. The second issue explores the role of women theorists and professionals in the above-mentioned fields and how they changed and still are changing theories and practices of 20th and 21st centuries. We welcome papers on women theorists and professionals dealing with architecture and design heritage and legacy, such as curators, preservationists, restorers, historians… with a focus on their experience and insight into the institutional structures of their time and region.
C. Women in communication and professional networks associations | networks | magazines | social media
This topic aims to go more deeply into the process of creating associations of women architects, industrial designers and civil engineers in Europe. The creation of these associations emerged in the United States in 1922, and only since 1942 took place in Europe through pioneering countries like Finland and Italy. The creation of these associations favoured the visibility of these women’s work. This topic will also include the incorporation of professional women into all types of social media, professional networks and magazines in which they do not only promote their work and careers but also occupy management positions.
D. Women and cultural tourism presence of women in architectural guidebooks | accessibility to cultural heritage | gender inclusiveness | women as cultural consumers
This topic focuses on the role of women as main consumers of cultural tourism in the European cities context and in the field of tangible cultural heritage, as modern and contemporary architecture, design and other related issues. The analysis will debate on European countries including whether there are differences in consumption patterns of cultural heritage between women and men, and if there are consistent quantitative differences between the two markets of reference. Whenever applicable, specific analysis will be conducted on those cultural assets created by women, which have also been featured on the “MoMoWo Women Architecture & Design Itineraries across Europe.”
E. Women’s achievements and professional attainments. Moving boundaries inventions | patents | competitions | prizes | awards
This topic aims to highlight an advanced approach among the interrelations between the professional attainments of women architects, civil engineers, industrial and interior designers, through competitions, prizes and patents, awarded or created by them. This topic also seeks to explore how memory plays a key role in cultural recognition and the importance of striving to map these professional ‘geographies’, from elite prizes dominated by men to the erasure of women creators.
F. Women and sustainability landscape | city | building components | building materials | design for housing
Sustainability and recycling are among the most urgent issues on the agenda of architecture and design today. Utopians, designers and theorists challenge overconsumption and advocate ‘green living’, ‘green interiors’, ecological design, cradle-to-cradle production approaches, recycling of waste, energy low environments for living, facades and roofs with plants and mosses, bio-bricks or reused materials from demolished buildings. How do women designers, architects and engineers respond to such developments? This topic invites contributors to inform the audience on current practices as well as historical examples.
G. Women “as subjects.” Documentation, methodology, interpretation and enhancement historiography | public and private archives | digital archives | sources open-access | women authorship in teams
This topic focuses on methodology and sources for gender studies and their reverberation in contemporary historiography. Are there archives dedicated to women’s works? What was/is the role of women architects, designers and engineers in project groups, and the traces left in archives? What kind of tasks they were/are in charge of, what was/is their hierarchical position within the group, what kind of interrelationship with male co-workers they had/have, what kind of professional strategies they used/use to obtain leading positions? A specific matter could be the relationship led in the cooperation between relatives.
G1. Design drawings collections of drawings | collections of plastic models | collections of digital reconstructive models
This sub-topic aims to explore the role of drawing in the design process of women designers, from two points of view. The first one focuses on collections of drawings and plastic models made by the designers. They could be studied using the tools of graphical analysis as well as the digital survey. The second one focuses on collections of digital reconstructive models that could be analysed by comparisons between different designers as well as different architectural trends or national schools. Methodologies and techniques aimed to realise interactive web repositories of these collections could also be included.
