If i may ask, how did you make that vhs cover for three cheers?
Hi, I hope you didn't send this ask a million years ago, for some reason I never got a notification for it.
Anyway, I no longer have access to the original Photoshop file, but I tried to (very quickly) remake the front cover just to be sure of the process/layers I used. More under the cut!
I started out with a template (this one, in this case). I'd recommend something more high quality though, this file was pretty small. I made some quick brightness/contrast adjustment to it, but I pretty much used the thing as is.
On a separate PSD file, I created the front cover image. It's very simple in this case, just Gerard's drawing (with some minor color correction) and some text at the top and the bottom.
Tumblr media
This file was converted into a smart object and imported into the VHS template file, set to 'Lighten' blending mode. In general, I suggest you always stop and experiment with blending modes, because what works in one case might not work in another. Here's what it looks like when the cover is imported and set to Lighten.
Tumblr media
In a new layer, I added scratches and noise using some dust particles brushes I had on hand (mine were part of an art set, but you can easily find some), then on another layer I added the price sticker using these brushes. All the layers except for the VHS template were then grouped together, and a layer mask was created for this group. In the layer mask, I erased parts of the cover using the same dust/noise/scratch brushes I mentioned earlier. Working on a layer mask has virtually the same effect as erasing part of the group/layer, with the added bonus of being reversible so you can always restore the image if you change your mind. They're all around a VERY useful tool. Anyway, after adding all that noise the image will look something like this:
Tumblr media
Afterwards, I added an ink bleed effect using a paper texture and the displacement map filter. It's not super noticeable except for a few parts of the image, but I feel like it adds just a little more realism lol
Tumblr media
The last thing I did was use the sharpen tool on some small dust particles to make the texture pop (it's best not to over-sharpen things though) and added a color halftone filter to give the impression that the cover was scanned. I don't really like how it looks in this quick recreation but I hope it serves its purpose:
Tumblr media
And that's pretty much it! I used the exact same process for the rest of the cover. I kind of assumed some photoshop knowledge here and there for brevity, but if you're not super familiar with it I'll try and be more detailed.
Thanks for the ask, hope you have a good day!

Billy Hargrove NSFW Alphabet
Stranger Things Taglist: @tatesimper
Warnings: Mentions of Drugs (Cannabis), Mentions of Abuse from his father
A = Aftercare (What they’re like after sex)
If you were another pointless one night stand then I think he wouldn’t really care for cuddling you, maybe offers your a cigarette afterwards. But if you were in a relationship then Billy would be more affectionate, stroking your back as you lay on his chest. Often asking if you’re okay and making sure he didn’t hurt you, no matter what he always smiles after sex. Always.
B = Body part (Their favourite body part of theirs and also their partner’s)
Like a typical guy, his favourite part about himself is his dick. Or his arms/abs, he’s worked hard to get his body where it is so he liked to show it off at any chance he gets.
Billy’s favourite part of his partners is their ass, he’s such an ass man and he’s always squeezing and pinching it. Not even caring if the both of you are in public, it’s almost to show everyone else your taken.
C = Cum (Anything to do with cum basically… I’m a disgusting person)
As much as a fuck boy he is the boy is smart and never leaves anywhere without a condom. Billy always carries more than one in the pocket of his wallet, he rarely cums inside of anyone just incase or pregnancy (if you’re able to get pregnant) or STD’s. Billy wouldn’t mind coating his lover in his cum though, cumming all over their chest or breasts (if you have them). Also would adore to cum on your ass, he sees it as him marking his territory.
D = Dirty Secret (Pretty self explanatory, a dirty secret of theirs)
He steals your underwear, keeps them in his pocket and laughs to himself when you go on about not being able to find them. Billy is secretly an underwear sniffer and you can’t tell me otherwise on the matter.
E = Experience (How experienced are they? Do they know what they’re doing?)
He’s very experienced in the bedroom department, he knows how to get you to your orgasm and won’t stop until you’ve came at least twice before he fucks you. Billy enjoys sex very much as it allows him to get his pent up anger out without doing any serious damage.
F = Favourite Position (This goes without saying.)
On all fours because he likes to grip your ass while he fucks you, but Billy wouldn’t be opposed to you riding him. But just because you’re on top doesn’t mean that you’re in control.
G = Goofy (Are they more serious in the moment, or are they humorous, etc)
He isn’t really goofy/humorous during sex, but if something happens like a funny noise/ugly orgasm face then you two would most likely giggle about that. But otherwise he’s rather serious as he wants to bring you the most pleasure he can, not make you laugh.
H = Hair (How well groomed are they, does the carpet match the drapes, etc.)
Have you seen this boys hair? He doesn’t manscape, maybe trims what he has below the belt to keep it under control, but he never goes bald. Billy wants to feel and look like a man so he never shaves everything off.
I = Intimacy (How are they during the moment, romantic aspect…)
Like I said before it depends on if you’re a one night stand or if you two are in a relationship, he’s romantic for the right person, rarely shows his vulnerable side to just anyone.
J = Jack Off (Masturbation headcanon)
Billy masturbates any chance he can get if he’s single or by himself, he often uses porn magazines or rents a porn VHS video to watch while he pleasures himself. If Billy is with someone, just picturing them or having a photo of his lover near us enough to help him jerk off.
K = Kink (One or more of their kinks)
Goodness where do we start? He’s got a few kinks: Public Sex, Degradation, It’s not a kink but he likes when his hair is being pulled, a slight daddy kink but would rather his partner scream his name, Masturbating with his partner as they watch porn together.. the list goes on.
L = Location (Favourite places to do the do)
The Pool, Showers, His Car, Your House, The Woods... although that last one is questionable to say the least.
Anywhere that isn’t at his own house so he doesn’t have to face his abusive father.
M = Motivation (What turns them on, gets them going)
Boy doesn’t need much motivation, all his lover has to do is bend down and he’s ready to go anywhere anytime. But the one thing that does send blood rushing to his cock, is when he sees you sucking on a lolly. His mind goes straight to the gutter.
N = NO (Something they wouldn’t do, turn offs)
Anything with bodily fluids would be a big no for him (unless it was spit or cum), Billy also would like to slap you on the face. It didn’t matter if you were into that or you asked him too, Billy wouldn’t due to the abuse his father displayed towards him. He wouldn’t want to hurt you like that.
O = Oral (Preference in giving or receiving, skill, etc)
Billy loves blowjobs, he would often ask for head when he’s driving for the ‘thrill’. Gripping your hair and bobbing your head until he’s practically hitting the back off your throat, but he also loves giving him oral. He could spend hours between your legs just taking in how you taste, wanting more and more until your begging him to stop. He also likes it when you sit on his face, having you grind against his tongue.
P = Pace (Are they fast and rough? Slow and sensual? etc.)
It depends on the type of sex and who he’s with, he’s sometimes slow and sensual but nine times out of ten you’re getting your ass spanked with him pounding his cock inside you.
Q = Quickie (Their opinions on quickies rather than proper sex, how often, etc.)
He’s up for quickies if the two of you are between jobs, Billy fucking you in the changing rooms while he’s on a break. It he prefers proper sex where he can take his time with your body, taste and feel you completely.
R = Risk (Are they game to experiment, do they take risks, etc.)
Billy loves public sex so risking getting caught by someone turns him on a lot, he loves making you moan loudly to see if anyone hears him fucking you. He’s willing to try some things once, if he doesn’t like it then you two don’t do it again but if he likes it.. boy you’re in for one hell of a night.
S = Stamina (How many rounds can they go for, how long do they last…)
He can go around 2/3 rounds due to him working out a lot, his stamina is pretty good. Billy won’t cum unless you do (unless he’s punishing you then he cums and deprives you until you’re begging). Billy can hold back from cumming for a while, but the first time you two had sex he nearly came almost instantly which is something you won’t let go.
T = Toy (Do they own toys? Do they use them? On a partner or themselves?)
Billy isn’t one for toys as he enjoys to pleasure you with his tongue/fingers and cock. He wouldn’t say no to a vibrator or a cock ring if you really wanted to try but he draws the line at a dildo. The only cock he wants inside you is his own.
U = Unfair (how much they like to tease)
Teasing is his middle name. Billy adores having you right on the edge of an orgasm before pulling away completely, he likes to hear you whine and beg to cum. He doesn’t like to be teased but he loves teasing his lover, if you ever tried to tease him he’d have you pinned down almost instantly.
V = Volume (How loud they are, what sounds they make)
Billy can get pretty loud when he wants too but he mostly moans against your skin to muffle it (he’s somewhat embarrassed by the noises he makes). Sometimes he grunts but he’s mostly a growler and moans loudly when he cums.
W = Wild Card (Get a random headcanon for the character of your choice)
High sex. There’s no way this boy doesn’t do weed, with the effect of the cannabis in both of your systems and the emotions of feeling horny would be the best sex you could ask for. Billy would most likely order pizza afterwards.
X = X-Ray (Let’s see what’s going on in those pants, picture or words)
I’d say he’s a decent size, nothing too overwhelming where you’re scared it wouldn’t fit. 7.5 inches, but he has more of a girth than anything. Also not to go into too much detail but he also has big balls, they’re often slapping against you when he fucks you which only adds to the pleasure.
Y = Yearning (How high is their sex drive?)
Through the fucking roof, very very high. There isn’t a day that goes by that the two of you haven’t had sex, and if there is for whatever reason, he’s the type of guy to complain about ‘blue balls.’
Z = ZZZ (… how quickly they fall asleep afterwards)
After he’s had his cigarette after sex, Billy usually doesn’t fall asleep very quickly; it depends how rough/rampant the sex was. He usually showers first but if it was tiring then the boy would fall asleep after he’s smoked.

10 + 10
I realised after I had posted this that I did it on a reblog that was already pretty long... so I have now done a separate post to try and make it smaller! Sorry!
I was tagged twice to do this and was writing out my answers when Coop tagged me AGAIN!! So I am sorry to all of you, this is long and you're going to learn more about me than you probably wanted to!!
Answer 10 questions then add 10 of your own:
@lucynnamonroll thank you for the first Tag flower!
1. A dream that you still remember?
I dreamt once that someone was chasing me and my dog and they bit me, took a big chunk out of my arm. And then my dog gave me this big blue fruit and my arm grew back. My dreams are always very strange.
2. What job did you want to do when you were younger?
I wanted to be a vet but I am way too emotional around poorly animals and also not smart enough to learn how to treat them haha!
3. And now? Did it has changed?
Yeah, I don't think I was ever cut out to be a vet. I'd like to work with animals though, maybe kennels or something? Zoo Keeper would be cool.
4. A favorite game?
I'm gonna take this as video game... There are a lot. I love Mass Effect and Dragon age, Gears of War... but Horizon Zero Dawn was amazing. I loved every single thing about it. Beautiful game, great story – just.. chefs kiss
5. Where did you have traveled? (Either it’s in your country or not)
I've been a few places- France, Spain, Somewhere else hot but I can't recall where... Ireland, Scotland. I was supposed to have gone to Bulgaria at the beginning of May but Coronavirus done fucked me over.
6. Did you have a totem animal/a favorite animal?
Ever since I was about 6 wolves have been my favourite animals. I originally started drawing so I could create a wolf fursona …. siiigghhh
7. Did you/Do you have a teddy bear to help you to sleep? How it was looking?
Yes, a little dog called Custard. He is a beige colour with brown ears but is still in pretty good condition. He sits on my desk chair when I'm not using it.
8. THE animated (or not) serie of your childhood/teenage years?
TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES – heroes in a half shell, turtle power!! I was also hella into Dragon Ball Z on Toonami when I was a kid. I remember we went to see some family up north and they didn't have Toonami and I cried because it was mid way through the Buu arc and I was gonna miss it.
9. Do you have anime/series/movie/whatever things merch?
I have a few bits. A Hatake Kakashi figure, one for Katakuri and Zoro. A heart Pirates hoodie. I think I have Kid's wanted poster somewhere...
10. How was your day?
Oh. It was a day. I slept through most of it. My energy/motivation levels are pretty low at the moment. But it was sunny, so that was nice.
@luffytarhoe thank you for my second tag!! 💙
1- What’s your favorite show/anime of the moment ?
I don't watch a huge amount of anime despite the focus of this blog. So probably One piece on that front. Otherwise I am watching Outlander atm, which is pretty good but there is sooooo much sex. An ungodly amount of sex.
2- What type of music are you into?
My music tastes are quite varied. I like stuff that you can listen to and put into a situation, so usually sad stuff where I can imagine I am the main character weeping over the bodies of my fallen comrades. Also Goo Goo Dolls!
3- If you could have one superpower , what would it be ?
Probability, or luck. Like Domino in Deadpool. That's always been such a cool concept to me.
4- What’s your favorite color ?
Blue and all it's hues. Maybe teal if I had to get specific.
5- Do you prefer animated or live action shows/series ?
I am happy with both. Though some animated shows should stay animated – looking at you ATLA...
6- Do you believe in ghosts ?
I believe that energy never disappears, only changes forms and I don't think that's any different for whatever happens to people energy once we die. I'm a big wimp though so it's easier for me not to believe in them!
7- Do you speak any foreign language(s) ? if yes which ones ?
No, sadly I never had a talent for languages. I'd love to speak Gaelic though.
8- Your n°1 fictional character ?
Probably Stone from the Raksura book series. He's just a fun grumpy old shapeshifting man.
9- Would you say you’re more of an extrovert or an introvert?
Definitely an introvert. I like me time. And all my hobbies are single person hobbies so that doesn't help haha.
10- What was the best vacation you ever took and why?
I haven't been on holiday in over 10 years but we went to a zoo in Spain once and a Monkey sat on my head. That was pretty rad.
@doctorgerth and finally, thank you for my 3rd tag!!
1. What are your zodiac signs (sun, moon, rising, if you know them) and do you think they fit you pretty well?
I am an Aries and that is pretty much the extent of my knowledge on the subject. Aries are meant to be pretty hot headed and outgoing and I can only really claim to be one of those thing and only when I need to be. So no, I'm not sure it fits me.
2. What is your favorite clothing item and/or accessory?
I don't reallllly care a lot about clothes and or stuff. So I guess either my glasses because I need them to see long distances (and to drive) or my phone if that counts as an accessory because that has all my crap on it.
3. Any future children or pet names?
Noooooooooooooo and no
4. If you could meet anyone (can be past, present, future, real, or fictional) who would it be?
I would have liked to have met Steve Irwin I think. He seemed pretty chill and I grew up watching Crocodile Hunter on TV so he was a big hero of mine for a long time. Also the Rock or Jason Mamoa because of reasons....
5. Brag on yourself! What’s something you love about yourself?
I am passably amusing and guess I write okay too haha
6. What is a movie or show that you could rewatch a million times and never get tired of?
The film Evolution is endlessly funny to me and it makes me laugh every time I watch it. I used to have it on VHS and I kept a video player in the house to watch it until my cousin got it for me on DVD (Yes I am old.)
7. What is your favorite album of all time?
I haven't listened to it in a long time but I really loved Maroon 5 – Songs about Jane.
8. Do you believe in ghosts and/or aliens? If you have stories to back up, plz share.
I want to belllieeveeeeee! Ghosts, yes, hesitantly but I think I answered that in a previous one. Aliens 100% because I refuse to believe that we are the only sentient life the universe. It's just... statistically impossible.
9. What do you do/who do you look to for inspiration?
I guess human being wise my mum is my inspiration for a lot of things? She's just a lovely person and she's very kind and sweet. I am very aware that we are not much alike, but I look to her as the sort of example of a good person. Creativity wise it's just a clusterfuck of books and badly organised pinterest boards.
10. What is your happiest memory?
Practically anything that has my nephews in it I guess. They're just... hilariously weird little dudes and I love them so much. They always make me laugh.
And here are my questions!!
1. What is your favourite book?
2. What is you most loved item and why?
3. If you got the chance to travel to another planet (knowing you would never see your friends or family again) would you do it?
4. One song that makes you cry?
5. Do you believe in supernatural stuff? Ghosts and Monsters and Fairies? Any experiences with it?
6. What is the most embarrassing thing you have ever witnessed or had happen to you?
7. What one thing would you buy if you had the money?
8. What is your worst habit/personality trait?
9. If you could alter your body with one cool feature, what would it be? (camera eyes, monkey tail, etc)
10. Do you have the patience to play a full game of Monopoly with no breaks?
I'll tag @pinkhatlizzy @nakunakunomi @lirulee @one-piece-dumpster-fire and anyone else who wants to answer my dumb questions!! Tag me because if you decide to do it so I can see your answers 💙

War of the Spark is an interesting set. But did you know that there are connections to other sets and Planes within this pile of cards? Here’s a non-complete look at the references to other Planes and sets of Magic found within War of the Spark.
Karn, the Great Creator – Dominaria (Weatherlight)
While the first static ability mimics the ability almost completely (except for the one-sidedness), Null Rod is part of the Legacy Collection, and so is Karn. What other parts of the Legacy Collection will we see next? I can’t wait for Juju Bubble to be on the next Karn card.
Ugin, the Ineffable – Zendikar (Worldwake) and Tarkir (Fate Reforged)
While the colorless spells don’t have to be Eldrazi with the new Ugin, it is close enough to the Worldwake card especially since it’s his eye. But his +1 ability is pretty much Manifest, but you still get the card if it creature dies. Makes sense since Ugin first had his card in Fate Reforged.
Grateful Apparition – Mirrodin (Scars of Mirrodin)
While I’m not going to touch on each Proliferate card since they’re using the mechanic in the set, but this is just a straight color shifted Thrummingbird with the Planeswalker damage rider as well.
Makeshift Battalion – Ravnica (Gatecrash)
And this is where the first of the named mechanics are part of a card name. Since mechanics like Battalion are ability words, they don’t have any extra rules text attached to the word. So things like this can happen even though they aren’t “true” Battalion cards (but they are).
Narset’s Reversal – Ravnica (Ravnica: Guilds of Ravnica)
A Fork effect is common enough that it’s not really a reference, but it’s the returning to the hand that’s a clear reference to the first time we visited Ravnica. You get a copy of the spell instead of drawing a card, which is pretty okay trade-off.
Teferi’s Time Twist – Kamigawa (Betrayers of Kamigawa)
Another almost straight reprint. Here’s your link to Kamigawa here for those that want a return to that plane.
Bolas’s Citadel – Dominaria (Onslaught)/ and Ravnica (Ravnica: City of Guilds)
Bolas is from(?) Dominaria so of course he would use the amazing enchantment that’s also a set name. He also believes in Greatness at any cost, so really this should read Bob’s Citadel.
Davriel, Rogue Shadowmage – Ravnica (Guilds of Ravnica)
I don’t know where Davriel is from but this enchantment is much closer to the Planeswalker’s static ability than The Rack, so it gets the nod here.
Deliver Unto Evil – Kamigawa (Champions of Kamigawa)
Two references to Kamigawa in one set? How the God-Pharaoh looks down upon you and smiles. Doubt he’ll make that same mistake again.
Ob Nixilis, the Hate-Twisted – Dominaria (Legends)
I don’t know if there’s any relation of Ob Nixilis to Dominaria. But I do know there was some outcry from the players when Underworld was reprinted in 8th Edition saying it was “Too good”. It was also the set that Serra Angel was a Rare, so that that as you will.
Bolt Bend – Tarkir (Khans of Tarkir)
The first of several that are “Ferocious” cards in this set. Ironically, there was no Blue “Ferocious” card even though this was the Temur mechanic.
Triumph cycle – Amonkhet (Hour of Devastation)
The Triumph Cycle and the Finale cycle will fit here (Chandra’s was the one alphabetically first). Both of the cycles obviously reference the cycles in Hour of Devastation with the Gatewatch’s previous fight with Bolas.
Devouring Hellion – Jund (Shards of Alara)
Devouring comes from Devour, the Jund mechanic from Alara. Bonus: Ajani is from Naya but visited Jund when he first Planeswalked. Neat!
Spellgorger Weird – Tarkir (Khans of Tarkir)
While not really Prowess, it’s a modified one as Prowess most likely won’t be coming back. Plus, it’s a weird card.
Turret Ogre – Tarkir (Khans of Tarkir)
Fun fact: Red now has six cards with Reach, the first two in Planar Chaos. Neat!
Arlinn, Voice of the Pack – Innistrad (Innistrad)
I mean, this one was kind of a given, right?
Awakening of Vitu-Ghazi – Zendikar (Battle for Zendikar)
Awakening is the connection here. It’s very flavorful and makes sense here. I wish Awaken was an okay mechanic and it got more love.
Evolution Sage – Zendikar (Zendikar)
Everyone says this is Landfall – Proliferate. And they’re right.
Finale of Devastation – Mirrodin (Mirrodin Besieged))
The only Finale that’s really almost a direct reference to another card in a high profile cycle. You can search your library or graveyard for any color with an additional mana, but you lose the ability to shuffle it in. You decide if it’s worth it.
Kronch Wrangler – Tarkir (Khans of Tarkir)
Could this mechanic find a way into more sets? Sure, but I would like to open it up beyond 4 power, but it seems like a good, known value.
Elite Guardmage – Kaladesh (Kaladesh)
Gain a life, lose a card draw, but lose a mana and gain a toughness. Was Cloudblazer too good? Clearly the most broken card in its set.
Huatli’s Raptor – Ixalan (Ixalan)
When I was little there was a VHS tape I would watch over and over called DinoRiders. It was the pilot episode and I’ve only seen that one, but I watched it like a 100 times. If you know where I can find the other episodes, wait a minute they’re on YouTube. I know what I’m doing tonight.
Living Twister – Rath (Exodus) and Ravnica (Guildpact)
I mean, clearly the returning to land ability references the lands from the original Ravnica block and not the Moonfolk from Kamigawa since they were all Blue and the fact that I’ve written Kamigawa more in this piece that actual articles in the last year means something’s wrong.
Solar Blaze – Mercadia (Mercadian Masques)
It’s it cute how wording changes in 20 years. Yes, Mercadian Masques is 20 years old. Pro Tip: If you’re going to make a card multi-colored, you can drop a mana in its cost (most of the time).
Teferi, Time Raveler – Dominaria (Time Spiral)
Tenth District Legionnaire – Theros (Theros)
If you change the color you can add a new ability, such as haste. Surprised that Hero wasn’t referenced anywhere on here. Complete fail of a set.
Ashiok, Dream Render – Ravnica (Ravnica: City of Guilds)
Is Ashiok a shadow? I would like to think so, but if I’m in a court of law, I’m not as sure as a
Huatli, the Sun’s Heart – Lorwyn (Lorwyn)
Sure, I could’ve chosen Assault Formation, but Lorywn was part of the most complicated limited format ever. And for that, I have to give it up to the OG Tree.
Guild Globe – Ravnica (Ravnica: City of Guilds)
That’s right Karn, harder to break than a snow globe. Those are impenetrable. (Ha, not Citizen Kane!)
Emergence Zone – Dominaria (Weatherlight)
There might be some talk of Alchemist’s Refuge here, but I decided to do with the OC Flash Land, since it clearly makes sense that Winding Canyons would allow creatures to be cast as an Instant.
I’m sure this isn’t the complete list, but it does give you a nice place to start. This is one of the few times outside of a Core Set that there has been this many references to older cards and places since Time Spiral block.
Until next time, which hopefully will be much sooner than before.
New MTGColorPie Post: War of the Spark's "Hey, Remember That?" I take a look at cards in #MTGWAR that have connections to other planes. Don't know if anyone has done this before, but here you go. War of the Spark is an interesting set. But did you know that there are connections to other sets and Planes within this pile of cards?

Cleanup & colouring & editing spark
After completing my backgrounds, I then moved on to refining the linework. To do this, I used a very dark grey (as black may have stood out too harshly against the light background) and smooth brush.
I followed my rough pass pretty closely, though I did have to shorten the legs as they didn't have the stubby, rounded look I was aiming for, especially when she sits up. I also added some facial expressions to enhance the performance of the character- a bored look at the beginning to show she's disinterested in the blocks, closing her eyes as she falls to show she's bracing herself, and wide eyes as she sits up to suggest she's trying to process what just happened. Finally, I added some secondary movement to her hair, which I think gave it a cuter & more comedic feel.
I think these additions have greatly enhanced the animation- you can recognise Allie's emotional journey- making her feel more like a real person, plus her exaggerated expressions and secondary movement in the hair are cute & cartoony- reminiscent of the program that she is watching.
After that, I duplicated the line layer and used the one underneath to add colour- using the fill bucket. I also added some cel shading on the same layer, so that it was easier to stay within the outlines. Although Amber's style frame didn't include much shading, I wanted to indicate that there is a TV offscreen that's illuminating Allie's face.
In hindsight this has created a noticeable difference between our sections so I don't think I did a good job of keeping my style consistent with the group's guidelines. I did try to shorten the neck and enlarge the ears, but even still, this looks more like my own style. Plus, I'm also just realising that I coloured the eyes with black instead of the brown me & Amber agreed upon. In my next group project, I should take the time to sketch and practise the agreed upon style to make sure I can replicate it properly, before jumping into my own ideas.
Tumblr media
In the next stage of editing, I needed to add a glow to the little bear. I've since lost my original photoshop file but to do this I just exported his frames as a png sequence, loaded them into Photoshop as a frame by frame animation, and applied the outer glow effect to all layers. Then, re-exported it as a png sequence.
Tumblr media
To give Allie & the blocks some shadows, I duplicated their layer, tinted it to be completely solid grey, then used corner pin to distort it to the shape of the floor. Then I set the layer mode to multiply and the result was this. I'm so pleased that I've learnt this trick as I would likely have spent hours trying to draw the shadow myself in each frame.
Tumblr media
After that I needed to add the bear cartoon in Allie's eyes. I had forgotten to make them transparent in these frames as I was planning on just placing the cartoon below her layer. So, instead I used masks (something I became more comfortable with by working on Jellytots) to match the cartoon to the shape of her eyes. This actually worked a little better, as I was then able to lower the opacity of the cartoon, to look more like a reflection.
Throughout this first scene, one of my main sources of inspiration has been my family's own VHS tapes. I love how the amount of noise and slightly-off colouring creates a warm, fuzzy look. It feels very comforting, especially since I have memories tied to these recordings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I then wondered if I could replicate the same effect for this section- it could potentially make it feel more nostalgic and personal to the viewer. Using the tutorial below, I duplicated the entire composition 3 times and separated them into red, green and blue, then used position to slightly offset them, creating the off-colour effect. I also added a lot of noise in an adjustment layer.
youtube
youtube
I really like the end result, I think I was able to replicate the feel of a home movie & it gives the scene a nostalgic warmth. However, the effect doesn't work with the embroidery intro- it looks to bright & jarring and harder to read. Plus, I'm concerned whether using this effect in my scene will further differentiate it to the rest of the film- I want to maintain some level of consistency. So, I may try another pass at editing, this time only using the effect on the TV screen.

As part of my portfolio reviews, I’ve been in contact with several people in the industry to gather feedback and advice for my portfolio so far. Rose Lloyd Rose Lloyd is a Stockport alumni, and has risen far in the industry. She’s represented by Eye Candy agency, who are massive in the illustration world. Her work is bright, bold and at such high quality she’s had clients such as the BBC, The Times, and the British Medical Journal. She uses texture and shape as a forefront for her work, which is something that makes me very lucky to have been able to speak with her about my work, as it’s not just inspiring but also very similar to my own work. Having a creative who can understand your work and the processes behind it, is brilliant in getting feedback. One of the first points Rose made when looking through my work is that she could see that I had a versatile range of media in my visual language, as well as my output. She mentioned that versatility is important, and that if you use more than one medium in your working style, let potential clients and agencies know that. I’m going to continue using different styles, as well as employing various techniques such as using mock ups, as well as if suits best - photography of my work, such as t-shirts, prints and books if needs be. Rose also suggested the I add my contact details to the back, as it’s a nice note to end with. I currently have mine at the front, so I’ll see if other artists suggest the same. Business cards were also suggested, which I’m currently designing! I’m also ensuring I keep my font, colours, and general feel consistent - I’m a brand as an illustrator and clients and agencies need to see that, purely because it looks so professional. Rose, speaking about getting work, also mentioned looking up art directors in Manchester, and just getting yourself out there, emailing your portfolio over so you’re in their books and getting your name out there for potential work! She also mentioned if I wanted to go into editorial work, it’s well worth getting current articles and adapting them as your own. Editorial is so fast paced, so it’s good to get into that fast frame of thinking and ways of applying your skillset to text in a short amount of time. It’ll also put your work into context and be super applicable for potential clients.  It was wonderful to speak to Rose, and really nice to see how far you can go in the illustration world! Flow Creative I was given the amazing opportunity by Barney to visit the team at Flow, a huge agency in Manchester. They're a design agency who specialise in motion design an animation, but are super versatile. They have a massive client base and a team who are always looking for work from freelance illustrators - so it’s safe to say they have a good eye for the illustration industry.  I spoke with Karl Doran, the creative director, and Sarah - accounts manager, as well as other members of the team. Feedback included my portfolio, website and social media accounts being consistent, presentation of my work being well ordered, and they liked how my website  is an open portfolio. Karl commented that my mix of mockups and full digital photos was refreshing, and that mockups used with my (Re)Collection work, as well as both print and digital campaigns is brilliant - agencies and potential clients love to see things in context, and the applicability of your work, so to keep that up!  Feedback also included to add sketchbook workings, and work leading up to it - this may be drafts or screenshots - it’s important that clients see this, as it puts your work into context some more, and shows the importance of your process, and how you’ve worked as a designer. I definitely need to start adding these!  After showing  my ident animations, it was amazing to see that the whole team actually really liked what I had going on - for something I’m really new to, a process that I struggled with, and is still a work in progress - they loved the looping of the saxo wheels, the general over-the-top-ness of the 90′s items, and the lo-fi, VHS feel. Points to improve on were looping my work, perhaps simplifying transitions, and putting them on my instagram as loops or GIFs, as people looking for work such as agencies and clients absolutely love this. Karl mentioned that I should check out Ruffmercy on instagram, and I’m so glad he did! I’m so inspired right now!  When chatting, I mentioned how I felt worried that by using the MTV logo so much in my (Re)Collection work, I may be ‘ripping off’ the brand, however the whole team said that it’s a good thing - people in the industry have published ‘knock off’ potential designs and actually gotten work off the original brands!  They also mentioned that using Beer Paper from GF Smith for my Beer work was so effective and a really nice touch, and possibly even creating business cards that are beermats! I am SO getting on that! Beermats are collectible, usable, and the thought of someone lifting their mug off it while looking for inspiration and seeing my contact details is a great idea! An amazing feedback experience with lots of things to take back, and my confidence boosted. Thank you for checking my work out and for your time! Tyler Spangler I contacted Tyler last year for a small interview about his views on the creative industry, and so contacted him again this year for some feedback on my PDF portfolio. Tyler is based in California, and uses amazing colours in bold designs covering character, text, and many types of concepts. He has some amazing clients including Chanel, Nike, Outkast, and has featured online in Dazed and Confused, and Hi-Fructose magazine. He’s lovely to talk to and has always had time to give me advice, and is in a great position to learn from and get advice from from within the industry. On sending him my portfolio, he mentioned that he remembered my work from last year because he likes my uses of texture! This is great, as being able to be consistent with my visual language means that I’ll be able to stay in people’s minds and proves better to staying in the radar as a creative! He mentioned that he thinks it may be nice to include project information on my PDF portfolio, similarly to how I do on my website - that it’ll give the viewer some more context. At the moment I only have my captions as to what they are, media, and when they were done. However, my website captions, such as here - simply even with how and why I came about it, why it’s grapefruit, etc. I think this is a great idea, as as well as working sketches and drafts, it gives the full information to viewers and potential clients. If I’m sending a PDF portfolio over it typically means I can’t show someone my work in person, where I’d normally explain and talk through what I’d been working on and why. So that’s a great piece of feedback! He also mentioned that his favourite piece in my portfolio is Elvis Juice, so I’m glad I’ve put it so prominently on my business cards! A few people have mentioned that it’s their favourite when looking through my work, and so it’ll be nice to be able to show people my best work here, especially in chances were first impressions are small, short, and therefore need to be really good and lasting, and an essence of my visual language as a whole. I’m going to add small captions to my work, making sure it doesn’t take over too much or become too much of a read. Ken Maylor Ken is a proper old school illustrator. He’s based in Lancashire, and has been illustrating for decades. He’s produced work for the likes of Star Trek and Elvis Presley annuals, Oyston’s Estate Agency, produced spray positives of photographs for various catalogues, as well as being a police officer for years, he created drawings for the Police and Crimewatch, as well as airbrushing. We couldn’t find any of his old work together, but he now mainly fly ties - as you can see here, he’s got an incredibly craft hand and so it’s no surprise he did so well with airbrushing and producing realistic drawings for the Police and Crimewatch! Looking through my updated portfolio with captions and sketches of the process thanks to Flow Creative’s and Tyler Spangler’s feedback, he had lots of positive feedback. Generally, he said he loves the colours I’ve used, for myself as a brand, and the boldness in the illustrations - they grab attention. The use of my batman making faces image as my logo alongside hand-drawn type is quirky, and he thinks they’re positive and there’s humour. This is great, as I’d love this to be a first impression for agencies and potential clients! Looking through my (Re)Collection work, compiled together with suggestion from Tutorial Feedback to categorise my work, the ‘90′s Called’ poster design reminded him of 90s films such as Lethal Weapon - knowing that the use of items to promote nostalgia has set off in this way for a variety of people who remember the ‘90s differently is great! The (Re)Collection campaign is definitely nostalgic and giving the right message about the ‘90s. The Inflatable Sofa piece casts a good image and Ken said it made him wonder whether watching tv is relaxing, as he saw the sofa as floating on the ceefax due to its transparency - which is a new way of myself looking at it - considering it to be possible to be used for an editorial piece covering technology etc! Going to the beer area/pieces of my portfolio, he suggested that Elvis Juice could appeal to bikers, and the ways in which the grapefruit is used for the wheels is again humorous and thought provoking - it’s lovely and refreshign to see that a fresh pair of eyes can see something like this consistent throughout my work when I’ve never noticed it before! He also mentioned that the sketches and process components are great - the feedback from before has paid off! The use of texture and paint dragged over on such a large scale gives a lovely effect in Beer Dive and allows a relaxing thing to look at - I never thought of this as a relaxing piece, but it’s now something I can use within my visual language if I need to create something relaxing or scenic! The Red Screes design is very relevant to the suggestion of where the ale is from, helping promote its locality - continuing to use the culture of the client and what my work is based on proves well and really shows that there’s deeper meaning and a lot of work put in behind my illustrations - I’ll definitely keep working like this. The craft beer book is accessible, readable for both experts and non-experts, and makes you want to go out and try craft beer! This is wonderful, exactly what I set out to create when I made this - from a portfolio page, I’ve managed to get the best choice and range of photos for Ken to be able to tell this! The Brodie’s Prime fox stance works well, as it looks mischievous but as hough he could be affectionate too, with a good stance considered in the sketches to show he’s on the prowl for mischief. The Tarn Hows XPA piece with the lemon over the building is brilliant and works well with the spotted background, representing the way the lemon is squeezed and he also loved how it makes you think - one of my most conceptual pieces which I’m glad it’s not just me that thinks of it in this way! The Palace cinema piece sets the tone well and the selection of what I’ve illustrated is so apt to the location, using Lancashire roses shows so much relevance. The House Plant piece is so differential in terms of shapes used - he said he could see a sloth, a birds head, a goose - he mentioned that you look for shapes when looking at the illustration and it casts your eye all round. The more you look, the more you see - and then he saw an elephant looking away! And now I see it! I’ve had some amazing feedback from Ken, and I’m so glad I was able to get feedback from such a practiced illustrator with a different variety of work to other artists I’ve looked at - it’s wonderful to see that artists from different disciplines can help me see my work differently, and can bring wonderful suggestions and feedback.  Eva Stalinski Eva Stalinski is an illustrator based in the Netherlands, who works with bright colours and bold outlines, with most of her work screen printed as merchandise. Her work is here! Like Chris Madden and Tyler Spangler, I contacted Eva last year for some insight into the creative industry, and received some amazing information and advice! Again, I contacted her for a portfolio review and received some really good feedback. On looking through my PDF portfolio via. email, she mentioned that she really liked the bright colours used, especially yellow - I never realised myself how much I use yellow, and just how much it works nicely with my work!  She also mentioned that my work is different from hers in discipline, and in that she uses bold outline a lot, however she could really see my work as merchandise! I’d love to explore screen printing some more as I have a screen printing kit at home, and I love using it! Finally, she mentioned that my beer work is really together and nice. She suggested looking at International breweries, as it’s always good to branch out and get myself out there! It’s strange, because as much as I love beer, I’ve never thought about this so I might do this! Thank you to everyone, as I’ve had so much help with my work generally, and my portfolio has improved massively!

Ficwritersweek Day 5
Day 5: Verbatim - Share some of your favorite quotes from the fics you’ve read or written.
So, I’m going to attempt to get some peeps in here that I haven’t mentioned yet.
Once again, it’s going to be quite long. So, once again, just chopping it off right here.
First up is from Knowing, by BaggerHeda (not sure if they have a tumblr!)
Waverly had started tracing light sweeping lines over the bones of Nicole’s body, drawing circles around her joints with gentle hands. Her mind wandered, deep and easy, with Nicole the centerpoint of all the far-flung details passing through her thoughts. She was visualizing half-remembered pages of an old anatomy text, skeletal structures, ghosts of annotated diagrams floating under her fingertips, imagination projected onto flawless pale skin. Learning the complex layers of her lover. “Lie on your side,” she said. “Hold still.”
“Bossy,” smiled Nicole, rolling up.
Waverly continued her journey over the body, her lips moving as she traveled, silently naming each part as she arrived, each bone, each muscle. Nicole watched her, fascination shining plain on her face, asking, “What are you doing?”
“Looking at you,” she replied. So much pleasure in the knowing. The knowing of the names of things, the knowing of how Nicole responded to the touch.
Ohhh, this is so godamn romantic and real and beautiful! Waverly - just examining and admiring Nicole, all of her, is such an incredible idea. And written by BaggerHeda, it’s a work of art. It’s the Sistine Chapel on a page. It’s what artists of old mused over when they sculpted stunning figures out of marble.
It’s just ... it’s art.
Next is a piece by @tigerlo , who destroys me and puts me back together again with every word she writes. This one comes from inside, an echo:
Her eyes are soft and concerned, but she’s smiling at the sight of Waverly, too, and Waverly can’t help but smile back like her chest is full of stars.
It’s strange, their interaction this time. It feels different .
Something has changed .
Because Waverly often feels shy around Nicole, but this is something else, and Waverly thinks she knows why.
Because there’s something between them now and they both know it. Even if Nicole doesn’t know things with Champ are over for sure, although Waverly thinks she can feel it, especially now.
Things feel different.
Neither one has actually said anything, but Waverly knows that’s just a matter of time now, once she can work up the courage. It’s just a matter of time before something happens.
Because the wool blanket around her shoulders is keeping the chill off, but it’s Nicole’s smile across the freezing distance between them that’s keeping her warm.
She half draws Chrissy inside, but she glances back up at Nicole, blushing when she catches her watching still, and she gives Nicole a little wave. It’s hesitant and almost cripplingly shy, but it means more than the others have.
Nicole smiles back and Waverly looks down and she means to turn inside, but she can’t help looking for Nicole once more, like she needs one more breath of air before a descent underwater.
She looks up and that rope pulls and Nicole is watching her in a way that Waverly’s never seen before, but she thinks she knows what it means regardless, and it stops her heart.
Because she looks like she could be falling in love.
I know, that’s a really long quote. But if we’re being honest, I could copy and paste every. single. line. from tiger’s works. I am not exaggerating.
The special thing about this one is that it really enhances the canon wayhaught relationship. It adds so much to what we see on screen. That’s the beautiful thing about tiger - her works add to the canon world, so very much.
Last, but certainly not least, is a piece by @tinyvariations called missing time:
The noise is delicate, more suggestion than reality, like an apparition, a ghost that flits in and out of the periphery, lacking shape and substance and all manner of things. The kind of sound that makes one question whether or not they heard anything at all.
Except for Waverly Earp, that is.
It’s a testament to the human body, to the survival mechanisms inherent in the human brain that one can attune oneself, so to speak, to the environmental stimuli that matter, to turn the volume up or down, to fiddle with the world’s contrast or dim the brightness as needed.
Mothers - or sisters, as the case may be - who wake in the dead of night from a deep slumber, bolting upright in bed and holding their breaths until they hear it again, the sound of the baby girl down the hall crying softly in her bed, another nightmare taking its toll.
A girl living alone in a one-room apartment over the town’s watering hole, the railroad tracks visible through the dirt-streaked windows along the wall. Day after day, night after night the train click clacks its way through the deserted streets of Purgatory, its bellowing horn shattering the somnolent stillness, rattling the windows in their frames on its journey. But she sleeps on, her ears dismissing the familiar sound as neutral. As unimportant, unworthy of attention.
Or a father with the uncanny ability to suss out alcohol in the world around him, to hear the crack of a can or the plink of a bottle cap being removed at a mile away. And the weakness to chase after it every time.
And so it is that when her phone trills, the sprightly glissando signalling receipt of a new text message muffled and distorted under a veritable mountain of clothes, Waverly still hears it clearly, and her heartstrings echo, an instantaneous slide up the scale.
The noise repeats itself, and her heart jolts another octave.
Nicole.
Okay. OKAY. Listen. I really tried to choose something shorter. But. DID YOU READ THAT?!??? HOLY. SHIT.
Every time I read something from tinyvariations, I am blown. away. with the Shakespearean like knowledge of the English language and just how to use those words so effectively. It’s prose, all of it, every damn word. The descriptions always make me stop and go “this is what words were made for.”
I know... you want one more. I know it. So here it is. This is from valley; low by wrackwonder (who I don’t believe is on tumblr...)
“You went scuba diving?” All thoughts of the sky disappeared. The closest Waverly had been to scuba diving was a worn-out VHS copy of The Little Mermaid she had found in Willa’s closet. Nicole had seen and done so much. Waverly had barely left the front porch. “Yeah, saw sharks and turtles, it was incredible.”
Waverly was about to ask for more details when the last candle flickered out, casting the room in sudden, inky darkness. She gasped, surprised, and that’s when Nicole scooted forward, her side coming into contact with Waverly’s side. In the blackness, Waverly could just make out the shape of Nicole, her silhouette, the only light coming from the occasional flashes of lightening outside. For all she knew, she could be in bed with a stranger. For all she knew, she could be in bed with the love of her life. Her heart thumped loudly.
“At first it can be so scary,” Nicole’s breath brushed past Waverly’s shoulder, across her chest, and her skin erupted into gooseflesh.
“People really aren’t supposed to be underwater, we’re not made for it, so it takes a few seconds for the body to get used to the shock.”
There were fingers tracing patterns across Waverly’s ribcage, electric touches that went right to Waverly’s core.
“The first thing is your ears, because the water fills up everything, every crevice.” With her index finger, Nicole made a line across Waverly’s abdomen, from one hip to the other. Waverly’s fingers balled into the sheets.
Give me a minute. I’ll expand. Just hold on.
.....
Okay. WW pairs the imagery of scuba diving with the action of Nicole and Waverly making love, and it is so. powerful. Everything means more. Every word has a depth to it that it wouldn’t have without this incredible picture of being submerged in water. It’s magical, really. It’s just magic...
Writer
Not even doing it. There’s enough. If you really like something I wrote, and you feel compelled to let me know - awesome! But, I’m stopping (... for now ......)
