Something that compels me so much about Maglor/Luthien is that if you change Beren with Maglor, the quest for the silmaril becomes so much more juicy

Because, yeah, on one hand it's still a suicide quest designated to either make Maglor give up Luthien or die in the process of the quest, thus freeing Luthien.

But on the other hand, this is Maglor's family treasure he is asking as bride price (which also makes it an actually accurate as a bride price is supposed to be something the groom's family already has yk), Thingol is asking Maglor to give him the whole reason the Feanorians even left Aman in the first place, the thing Feanor died trying to re-take, the reason he has been fighting for years.

Not to mention that depending on how you decide to read the oath, Thingol is asking him to not only curse himself but his entire family for Luthien, asking him if a life with Luthien is worth eternal damnation.

Full Scene Friday! tagged by @zealouswerewolfcollector to share a little bit of a random WIP. here's the beginning part of a WiP i'm kicking around. I have realized that I have absolutely no idea where it will go. It's tonally all over the place and I'm splitting it into two different fics. SOO probably won't get finished any time soon unless I have an epiphany, but have this bit.

Maedhros wakes, and no one is there.

He learns the news in the disconnected, half-alive state that seems to accompany one’s return from the Halls.

Maglor never came, dead or alive—they say perhaps he’s wandering, in spirit or flesh, along the coasts of Middle-Earth or beneath the depths of the sea, where the Gap has fallen, or maybe he’s faded and there’s nothing left of him but his voice, which sings out laments of great sorrow, or maybe he’s settled down somewhere in a little cottage and taken a Sindar wife and had three beautiful daughters who speak only in riddles or maybe he’s setting himself up to be the next dark lord, terrible and beautiful to behold, or maybe he laid down in a ditch somewhere and didn’t get up the next morning.

And Fingon had been here, returned from the halls. Some three or four hundred years ago. Just missed him, really. He waited around some while; maybe three dozen years or so. Couldn’t Maedhros have gotten reembodied sooner?

His mother has gone to seek solitude in the mountains, and does not wish to be disturbed. Out of his close kin only his nephew—whose death he had not lived to witness—has returned, and taken on an apprenticeship with Aulë. He has no words for Maedhros, nor Maedhros for him.

Of his remaining cousins only Ar-Feiniel will see him, at first, remembering something of their friendship, and Felagund, who has ever had more pity than sense. His uncle, too, will speak to him, bound by old ties of loyalty and favor, though his face is drawn.

Aredhel offers him honeyed wine speaks not of the past; Finrod swears by the justice of the halls and the Valar and laughs his sad bell-like laugh and talks so much Maedhros need not.

Writing Year Wrapped (2023)

Thank you for the tag and for creating this, @eilinelsghost!

An advisory off the bat that a few of these explore some themes and relationships that won't be for everyone (don't want Tumblr to censor me completely so sexu@l themes and inc3st lol).

3 Favorite Fics You've Written This Year

Scorched (E). Elrond/Maedhros, Elrond & Elros, past Maedhros/Maglor. Started as a quick fill to get a prompt from @i-am-a-lonely-visitor out of my head but then Maedhros was such an unreliable narrator that I needed to tell more of the story. I loved exploring this complicated entanglement from four very different perspectives and it gave me confidence to write more about this period.

Who By Fire (M). Amrod/Fingolfin. I broke new thematic barriers (for me, not for the fandom) and dug deep into two characters I hadn’t written much/at all before with this one, and I’m really pleased with how it turned out and how it was received.

Everlasting Darkness (E) Eärendil/Maedhros, Elwing/Maglor. I feel like I’ve mentioned this one a lot, but I just think it’s so fun and absurd and pretty clever if I do say so myself. And hot. I’ve received a lot of great comments on it including that Anon who’s got Eärendil/Maedhros brainrot – sending you flowers.

3 Fics That Stretched You the Most

If You Are the Healer (E) Maedhros/Maglor. I started this one-shot in December 2022 and didn’t finish it until February 2023 for @maedhrosmaglorweek, which is a long time for me to spend with a one-shot. I wanted to write something that would be credible to people (like me, when I started) who weren’t totally sold on the ship and that proved a real challenge, but based on some feedback I got I pulled it off.

And Love Grew (T) Elrond & Elros & Maglor. After two years of rotating this deeply complex relationship, I started my first foray into a long fic. I struggle a lot with (confidence about) writing an engaging plot and I came close to abandoning this endeavor because I couldn’t imagine exactly how everything would unfold so it felt reckless to start sharing it. Then I said “to heck with it!” and it was the right call.

The whole Silmarillion Phrase Prompts series (mostly G, some T and M). It’s 20 ficlets so this is a big cheat, but I put this prompt list up to get myself through a creative slump and some of these were a real push to get out but I’m proud of completing all of them and writing so many different characters and situations.

3 Favorite Lines Short Passages You've Written

It was not well known among Tirion’s elite that the staid and formidable Nerwen Artanis Arafinwiel was as ambitious about the acquisition of lovers as she was about the acquisition of athletic and intellectual accolades. Because Artanis was decisive and efficient, eschewing the coquetry that normally preceded an act of pleasure, it was believed, by those she did not bed, that she was uninterested in such matters. As for those she did bed, the reverence and fear she inspired kept them from making any boasts about having breached the steely exterior of Arafinwë’s daughter — at which each believed him or herself to have been uniquely successful.

He was so close now that Nolofinwë’s eyes had to dart about to take in the whole of his face. Nolofinwë inhaled deeply, attempting to gain control of the thundering of his pulse, and his nostrils were filled with the sweet scents of the anise and chamomile oil used to soothe Amrod’s pains. It only made his heart pound harder. “Telvo, what are you doing?” he asked. “Unkinging you.”

Since then, Maedhros has plotted the narrative of centuries building towards that boundary drawn. The tale of a liege devoted beyond reason to his lord, giving and giving until his spirit was as scorched as the lands he lost. They do not touch anymore, not even in violence. Maglor has no need of him. It is his foals, grazing upon his barren spirit, who have brought him back to life.

Strange Currencies by @jouissants (in-progress, Maedhros/Maglor accidental LaCE marriage, M) - this fic is one of my absolute favorite things to come out of 2023, lavishly and heartbreakingly imagined post-canon reembodied/returned Exiles and brilliant maemags falling together in late Beleriand. invest now!!!

here we go again by @i-am-a-lonely-visitor (completed, Orodreth/Celebrimbor & Gil-galad Mamma Mia AU, T) - the most summer fun ever with one of my favorite Celebrimbors, delights me to think about and I think about it often!!

Such a Marriage by DifferentSong (in-progress, fem!Maedhros/Maglor set between Doriath and Sirion, M) - I feel personally blessed by the ability to list multiple maemags longfics on this list. This one is so tender, with incredible characterization for both these two and Tolkien Elves (old & young, sad & gay) in general; leader fem!Maedhros owns my heart.

What the Water Gave Me by @imakemywings (completed, Finduilas/Nienor canon divergence AU, M) - beautifully described and cozily, realistically lived-in development of a relationship between these two in a universe where Nienor survives her suicidal leap; this bandaged the wounds left by CoH for me!

In Twain by @jouissants (completed, gothic and gendery Maedhros/Elrond and Maedhros/Maglor, E) - cinematic reading experience and deliciously winding tale of Elrond's coming to better know Maedhros, Maglor, and himself; so many lines from this--and the ending--just grip me and won't let me go.

Single-chapter fics

Wondrously Wrought by @searchingforserendipity25 (Maedhros & Maglor in a universe where Noldor craft their children's personalities, G) - this beautifully written fic has me in a chokehold months & months later, I simply love it so much--the Fate of it all and the dynamic between them, and how thick the tension and emotion hangs even in these few moments.

and some of us returned by @i-am-a-lonely-visitor (Maedhros/Maglor, past Maglor/Glaurung assault at the fall of Maglor's Gap, M) - fulfilled my wildest dreams of Glaurung angst played straight, eerie and gorgeously written psychological horror told through Maedhros' eyes and his own possessive love for Maglor.

As You Wish by @imakemywings (Maglor/Thranduil battle couple devotion and hurt/comfort, T) - so many great single-chapters this year but this one is SO dear to me; I love eerie attack dog Maglor who simultaneously cares overmuch and I think this ship is so thematically chef's kiss as an alternate ending for him; wry Thranduil is fantastic here too.

one of your girls by @swanmaids (Celegorm/Oromë, Celegorm & Maglor; femininity and internalized homophobia in Valinor, E) - masterful weird mythical Ainur devotional customs surrounding Oromë and his hunt, and a really touching exploration of Celegorm's character in a time when he still has yet to choose his fate. Celegorm's tension with Maglor is great here too.

Played by @disastrousexpense (Maedhros/Maglor, Maedhros/Fingon where Maglor seduces Maedhros through the guise of "teaching" him for Fingon's benefit, E) - one of my favorite Maglors this year, so theatrical and affected and alluring and (in this Valinor period) quite selfish, yet expressive and deeply, deeply feeling. a rollicking story that made me laugh and then made me cry!

Oldies but goodies

Elvish Letters by @ladygavroche (Caranthir & Finrod, Celebrimbor & Fëanor, Maedhros & brothers, epistolary humor, in progress, G) - this is a favorite of mine, along with the Caranthir fic earlier in the same series. Incredible and hilarious epistolary that just sings!!

The Silver Queen by @i-am-a-lonely-visitor (AU where Gil-Galad is Celebrían, trans!Celebrían/Elrond, completed, M) - such a lovingly written fic for a brilliant concept. Multiple scenes of Celebrían's arc in this had me weeping earlier this year.

The High King of the Noldor and His Faithful Hound by shatteredGlasses (Hrunting_License) (Celegorm/Maglor, assault and tensions during Maglor's kingship, completed, E) - During Maedhros' captivity, Celegorm thinks the worst of Maglor, and Maglor uses Celegorm for self-harm. Genuinely disturbing, excellent angst, and very formative for me!

Through the Smoke I See You by Dragonstorm (Maedhros & Maglor, Maglor's Gap and Dagor Bragollach, single-chapter, T) - one of my favorite explorations of Maglor's devotion and guilt towards Maedhros, and the immense risk of trying to hold the Gap! I love it so.

Thistle Whistling on the Wind-Blown Field by happythoughhuman, Torpi (Finrod & Edrahil, Finrod & Avari, culture, environment, storytelling, completed, M) - I've been meaning to revisit this strange gem of a TRSB fic for a while. One of the most vivid explorations of Melkor's impact on the environment in Middle-earth, of serious Elven cultural differences and the notion of Finrod as a kinslayer (while a very Finrod-loving story; he shines in this, making connections as is his wont). Also, won my heart for putting mangroves in Valinor.

My own fics

bite thy wings and let thee crawl (Melkor/Maglor, noncon macro/micro horror porn inspired by this art by @aquaregiaart and Lay of Leithian, E) - the Big Melkor fic, set during Maedhros' captivity. In my head this is my best work of 2023 and probably ever. Come closer... give him a click.... he can't hurt you....

Less Wise (sapphic Maglor/Thranduil, canon divergence, E) - pining with a happy ending in an AU where kinslayer fem!Maglor has come to serve Mirkwood's king fem!Thranduil. This was my attempt to write the sort of comforting and cathartic fic I so enjoy reading.

elvenkings (here on tumblr as well) (moments ft. Orodreth, Thranduil, Elwing, Elrond, G) - my drabbles fic for Sindar Week 2023 about the long-lasting echoes of Menegroth and Iathrim heritage. I'm really happy this brief story resonated!

pursuit (Tulkas/Nessa and Oromë/Nessa, genderfluid Nessa, M) - Nessa and Tulkas wed. Smut and mythical vibes ft. confident and changing Nessa, the dancer and the god of prey. I love that weird Ainur shit.

yes many and beautiful things (Maedhros/Maglor during the War of Wrath, M, now with art by @aquaregiaart!) - After their final argument about stealing the Silmarils, Maedhros and Maglor share themselves with each other wholeheartedly one last time before the end; sort of a "what if they loved each other and that was worse."

TBH if I make you cry then my job here is done :D Like it's always good to hear that something made someone laugh, but it hits different when someone tells me they cried, especially since people can cry for hundreds of different reasons, not just because something is sad!

65. Tell us about what you’re most looking forward to writing – in your current project, or a future project

Is it too broad to say Thalionel's entire arc in Beneath a Boundless Sky? Especially the mid-fic arc. There's some crazy shenanagins that he's going to get up to and a bit of therapy camping with grandpa Maglor and I can't wait to get there, tbh. It's really a coming-of-age sort of tale for him and I love writing that sort of thing.

Oh, that and the twins finally getting to Frumgar's court and buddying up with Fram :D The political mess I have planned is going to be a treat to get to, as well as some good old fashioned monster hunting.

that thing where a character has to give up their weapons but they keep pulling out more knives and guns and throwing stars etc from increasingly weird places in their clothes? that's maglor but with musical instruments. he keeps emergency flutes strapped to his legs in case nelyo confiscates his harp at 3am because he won't stop playing

The hall was packed with lords who were in alliance with the greenwood to advisors and guards and servants, music and talk had filled the hall Galion was as you assumed babysitting Legolas, by following him threw the party, you were sat on one of Thranduil's legs as he sat on his throne, he had an arm wrapped around you, you were both watching the party, Elrond had brought his twins so every so often you saw them chasing little Legolas.

"Why don't we go an enjoy the party as well, it is to strengthen our relationships, go talk with your brother" Thranduil said

"One of these days you are going to have to talk to Elrond and not make me do it" You said as Thranduil followed you threw the crowd, your fingers had looped with his.

Elrond was standing with a drink of red wine, and Celebrían on his arm talking with Lady Galadriel.

"Sister, it is good to see you again, it has been some time" Elrond said spotting you

"That it has" You returned with a nod to Elrond.

"Thranduil, how is fatherhood treating you" Celebrían questioned as you and Elrond caught up, you were both intrrupted from your conversation by Legolas holding Thranduil's robe with a chocolate covered hand and offering the cake on the plate he had, which was surprisingly untouched to Galadriel.

"Why thank you young prince" The Lady said taking it, you picked up Legolas who had chocolate covering his hands and mouth

"Who's a little diplomat" the twins came barreling in each trying to offer their father cake, you chuckled as Legolas had crashed from his sugar high onto you.

"Lets get you clean up shall we" You said to Legolas who nodded tiredly, you excused yourself and Thranduil followed after you.

After you had bathed Legolas and got him changed into cloths he could sleep in you tried to set him to bed, he refused

"Legolas your tired you need to go to bed" Thranduil said sitting on the bed

"No, I'm not, I want to stay at the party" Legolas pouted, you looked to Thranduil

"They will understand you had to go to bed, I'm Sure Elrond will be putting the twins to bed soon" You said as you sat on the bed and leaned into Thranduil.

"No" Legolas complained

"Legolas had to go to bed, but he wants you two to say goodnight to him" The twins looked to you, before looking at their father silently questioning him if they could go, Elrond nodded and the twins took your hands and ran out of the hall, you showed them to Legolas room, they walked in quietly, you blessed the fact Arwen was born, it made the two quieter, the three of you approached the bed Legolas had fully crashed and so had Thranduil, you smiled to yourself seeing it, Thranduil had an arm wrapped protectively around Legolas, who was snuggled into his chest the twins whispered their good nights to both of them, and you took them back, you ran the party until it ended, were you had basically crashed on top of your brother.

Elrond smiled and moved a hair out of your face, he had already put the twins to sleep "I'll join you after seeing Y/n to her room" Elrond said to Celebrían, Elrond guessed Thranduil was in Legolas' room as he didn't return so he took you there and set you onto the bed.

He smiled to himself as Thranduil moved his arm unconsciously over you to protect you as well, Elrond left to his room you had given him to stay in.
