lately ive been going through my google history when im bored (which is so incredibly entertaining btw. highly recommend) and apparently, after double-checking my camera roll that date & finding proof to support this theory, i did indeed first watch hlvrai on november 4th of 2020. absolutely insane. i thought i hadnt seen it until mid-2021 at LEAST.
shoutsout to my friends who i watched it with at the time half of which i dont talk to anymore... i owe u for getting me into funny half-life series. thank you oomf
WARNING !!! below the read more is a long fucking list of funny* things i found in my camera roll from the week i first watched hlvrai. like not the images themselves just me talking about them. i dont know why i thought that was a good idea but alas i already spent 90+ minutes writing that all out and tbf i did have a good laugh looking at that shit. anyway the warning is because its long as fuck and i'm willing to bet not at all interesting to anyone who isn't me. i think if i talk any more i will ramble for fucking ever so ill shut up. WARNING OVER !!! miami make some fucking NOISE. dj tsumugi.
*please note these were funny to both me in late 2020 (age 15) and me now (older but not at all wiser). what im trying to say is read at your own risk because 90% of this is unfunny as fuck but it could be worse. it could be shit from when i was 12. That would be really bad i think
anyway here are some highlights from my camera roll from like the day before, the day of & the day after "the incident" (me watching hlvrai):
a ridiculous amount of terezi pyrope pictures. i had not (and still have not) ever read homestuck
at least 30 pictures of hugh o'conner. probably more if im being honest with myself
the same few pictures of kokichi ouma? for some reason?
like a lot of pictures of nagito komaeda. there is at least one screenshot where my discord pfp is nagito. Something Happened
vriska and nepeta also make an appearance. the former more so but not nearly as much as terezi for some reason
a lot of screenshots of discord convos involving various hughdebeste aus. some favorites are the homestuck au, the peabody & sherman au(???), the meet the robinsons au(??????), splatoon au
blu and red scout tf2 they have taco bell and kfc shirts respectively?
professor sycamore from pokemon and professor sycamore from layton. there are multiple images of each and theyre right next to each other
screenshots of the homestuck wiki. Concerning
a screenshot of an email i got from nintendo about the special edition fortnite switch releasing
like a lot of screenshots of alfendi layton from when i was playing lbmr. not surprising but theres kind of a ridiculous amount
a picture of alvin (the chipmunk) that just says "WE DID IT"
screenshots of me talking in ridiculous 13375P34K on twitter and being accused of kinning from homestuck. quite frankly? i deserved that
hatsune miku makes a few appearances
many tumblr post screenshots. However i did not take these myself i just saved them from reddit. really ashamed to admit i did this for literal years even when i used tumblr at the same time
picture of professor layton standing in that one pose in that one picture i dont know how to describe it. the "you know i had to do it to em" one
that one bugs bunny suit meme and it says "i wish all boobed men a very pleasant evening". this was apparently important enough for me to save twice like an hour and a half apart
many screenshots of me on discord AND twitter posting quotes from hlvrai as i watched it. this includes on my masked disciple roleplay account
a picture of my danganronpa trilogy for ps4 copy. but its one of those live pictures so when i click on it i get attacked (i had the flash on because i took this picture in the dark)
that one really terrible picture of tommy coolatta thats like the first non-fanart picture of him on google images. thrilled to announce i think thats been the only image on his wiki page for years now
picture of hime & mikoto meika's mmd models. i think they had recently released or been announced at this point
catboy apollo justice & wolf boy klavier gavin gacha life gifs. i think my friend made this (if it was in fact my friend and not someone random this was the same friend who streamed hlvrai and thus changed my life forever btw)
that old meme about not passing [xyz] the aux because theyll play [abc]. it says "Do NOT pass the kinnie the aux / They'll just playin 'Alvvays - Archie, Marry Me (Official Video)'"
screenshots of calendar events i set up celebrating the anniversary of two dgs characters' deaths (genklimt fans rise up!)
screenshot of my real kinlist on my real carrd from 2020. i can tell it was just edited because this screenshot has scribbles on it (i circled the latest addition to my kinlist which is in fact "dr. coomer")
screenshots of me and my oomfs on this one specific anime rp roblox game that i WISH i could remember the name of. it let you import pngs of any character you wanted so we had pictures of ace attorney guys hanging out with madoka girls at some point. this specific instance includes klavier gavin, baby trucy wright, rosie from animal crossing & a blue orb thing(??). we are all incredibly small for some reason
john cena suit gangnam style depression. this is saved multiple times. does anyone else remember this post i used to be obsessed with it for some reason
picture of a historical moment in my life (the day i changed my ps4 username to "TheKokichiOuma" which i have regretted for years now. in my defense it did actually use to be worse than that im so serious. 2018 was a dark time why did i pick the name "DabWeebPolics". Horrific!
screenshot of a string of tweets between me and a friend at the time. the tweets arent actually important except for the first one which reads "these gummy bears taste british i cant explain it". this is only important because i remember these fucking gummy bears and they DID taste british in like the same way heathrow airport feels british you know
this one picture of my chemical romance in a forest(?) but bob looks like my fucking dad at a quick glance and it scares me every time i see it. i saved this multiple times over the course of that day
various pictures my friend made of jove justice being set on fire
the really short businessman with the fuckass bob from the lorax but my oomf edited him to look like kazuma asougi
picture of byakuya togami which is only funny because it has text on top of him that says "I. DO. NOT. GEC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
a single screenshot of a tumblr post about the events of That Day (destiel putin election day.) the only other thing referencing this in my gallery is a screenshot of the trending tab on twitter (the trends are, in order. 1. #TrumpMeltdown 2. destiel 3. #ElectionResults2020)
two paper mario character pngs followed by that one misha collins picture. you know the one
various screenshots of a mishapocalypse happening on twitter
more super paper mario pngs
im going through pictures slightly further out from nov 4th now (i think after i look at nov 2nd & nov 6th ill call it quits). first image i see is that "gay people i respect vs. gay people i dont respect" image and i dont know why i saved that nevermind i scrolled and immediately found i made a dgs meme out of that
phoenix wright BASED ON GAY MANGA?
went through the ace attorney mamboleo person's deviantart that day i think so i have various funny works of theirs saved. i think the average person actually would know them as the stamp on the ground animation person so. Thats them too. on a side note watching that video after you got into metal gear is fucking insane
that mom against cat boys tshirt
a lot of unnoteworthy professor layton & ace attorney & dgs images
ben shapiro on the ace attorney witness stand?
oh im finding out i got really fucking mad at william petenshy that day. iirc i got so fucking annoyed at this case i didnt even finish it i just. skipped it. i wasnt even playing it i was just watching it???
one of those "tag yourself / which mutual am i" posts but all the options are characters from my kinlist. one of the titles is a jfk clone high reference
screenshots of dms to klimt van zieks begging him to drop a kinlist
a screenshot of a friends reply to my tweet (hi doop) which did just remind me of my "damon gant is apollo justice's grandpa" theory. this tweet manages to tie yanni yogi into the family tree
screenshot of a discord music bot playing a youtube video (remember when they could do that?). the video is titled "henry ledore does his taxes for 10 minutes asmr"
apparently i looked at characters i share a mbti with that day. highlights include souseki (the dgs guy. no idea about the real one), ron delite, flora reinhold, pyro tf2, agent 8 (splatoon), n harmonia & my goat DERPY HOOVES
screenshot of part of twitter's trending page. it says that trending in the united kingdom, with at least 3,610 tweets, is "Homosexuals"
screenshots of multiple tweets in a row from me. they all involve me frantically talking about how i really want to kin nagito komaeda even though i know fuck-all about him
various pictures of markiplier (both in real life & in fma)
real screenshot of me unironically saying "mental illness innit" in reference to myself. this was in my twitter dms with my friends klimt van zieks roleplay account which is even worse
original gina lestrade & egg benedict image made by me. if you know the apollo gant image its basically that
okay i lied i went back to nov 1st and i think i'll check nov 7th afterwards. one full week of nonsense. this proved to be a good idea because i immediately found a screenshot of a text to my mom asking her if she kinned gnomeo from gnomeo and juliet. she said yes
possible origin of why i own a boss baby poster: oomf kin-assigned me the boss baby
possibly my favorite example of the twitter feature where it shows you the original tweet and then the last two replies on a long thread of replies to that post. the original tweet is me saying in all caps "i care him so much he is so small" about luke triton (what a 2020 sentence!). the last two replies are from me and then my oomf but i think only the first of the two needs recounting. it says "do you really want to explain vore to your teachers". i know i say i want context a lot but i genuinely do really want context for this what the fuck happened here
oh good! boss baby update: theres a screenshot of my ebay purchase of "BOSS BABY Poster A5"
im on pictures from november 7th now. i think i went through a figures bot that day because i have a frankly ridiculous amount of figures (mostly nendoroids. mostly miku nendoroids.) there's also the default hime & mikoto png in the middle of these
twitter notification screenshot. apparently kristoph gavin ace attorney followed me that day
i think i went and looked through a christian memes subreddit or twitter account or SOMETHING i dont know where else these all came from. this is followed by a staggering amount of facebook minion memes
side note: does anyone else remember the aatwt (ace attorney twitter) & puyo puyo twitter crossover event in the michael's customer service chat incident? that feels like a different universe
this one is really nothing compared to any of this other stuff but i do have proof of me saying "pog" unironically
grand finale to this saga is actually from a couple days after (nov 9th 2020) but after seeing the staggering amount of death the kid images i had saved over like two days (i had watched a couple episodes of soul eater with my pals) i felt compelled to dig up my "death the kid get wifi anywhere you go" fancam. i might post it later cause its a classic (only to me)
thank you all so much for watching remember to like and subscribe and whatever. thank you for reading this if you read it for some fucking reason. i spent just over an hour and a half looking through this shit & typing this but it was a nice walk thru memory lane tbh! im gonna shut up now before i start rambling. feel free 2 ask for the images or context to any of these i literally love rambling. peace and love on planet earth. LOVE YOU ALL!!! GOODNIGHT NEW YORK CITY

been seeing a lot of people who like yttd talking about zero escape so i’m thinking about getting it, should i get the full trilogy or just the nonary games bundle?
OH MY GOODNESS zero escape. i love zero escape it’s my favorite video game series hehhehhe. it’s so good man
ok honestly i would say buy the nonary games bundle first, and then after that, if you want to play ZTD (the third game) after that, you can get it separately (unless theres a bundle deal rn or smth idk)— but ZTD is like. quite controversial ? i guess ?? in that a lot of people Do Not Like it. in my opinion theres good stuff and bad stuff in it, i overall don’t like it very much while still also really liking specific parts of it… Hrm. to me it’s just not as good as the first two games but it’s not like its unplayable or anything. I’ve only watched playthroughs of VLR and ZTD bc i can’t focus on actually playing games myself very much (ive watched like 7 playthroughs of 999 but it’s been 10 months and i’m still not done with my actual own playthrough of it) so when i got to ZTD i just skipped through stuff when I didn’t care for it. which worked out for me bc then the stuff i liked more stuck in my brain more !! so really it’s up to you if you want to play the third game, like after you’ve played the first two and see if you want to see the follow up even if it’s not quite as good. but also i have no idea what your opinion on it will be! i only have my own as reference haufhgsdhsdkj BUT ANYWAYS THAT WAS A RAMBLE .
you ABSOLUTELY should play the first 2 though dude. theyre so rad. i scream and explode and flop around on the floor like a fish. on friday i rambled about them to a random classmate for an hour. BIG IMPORTANT THING THOUGH: if you are playing the steam version of 999 YOU NEED TO PUT IT IN NOVEL MODE. this is not an optional this is a You Have To. Ok ? theres stuff that got lost in translation when they ported it from the og DS version, and if you cant play the DS version, putting it in novel mode mitigates said translation loss to an extent. NOVEL MODE. OKIE COOL !! oh jesus christ i love these games so much man im falling down the stairs i’m exploding. just trust me man. VLR is like my fav thing ever. 999 music slaps hard also . Wwa9ufyhdjkdl;lksdjhg have happy escaping!! WOOHOOO prepare for emotional damage— but hey you like yttd so i’m sure youre familiar with emotional damage

i defeated Everhood
Tumblr media
undertale... 2! [spoilers]
ill start with the non-plot stuff, i really like the look of the game. a lot of effort went into making all the characters feel distinct and likeable. knight lost-a-lot has an australian accent, and im not saying that because he called me a sheila or whatever, its just something that i think fits the character. yknow youve made a good character when you can imagine stuff like that, yknow? and the environments are all memorable too, even with places that risk being samey like the nightclub and the carnival
and the writing's a lot of fun too! so, i feel like were all on the same page of saying its hard for media to take itself seriously nowadays. serious emotion has to be undercut with a whedonesque quip, that kinda thing. Everhood knows what its doing; it knows when to tell a joke and it knows when to stand back and let a scene emote. it does this without feeling like its two segregated games, in my opinion. like, even after *that moment* where things get serious, theres still levity, and theres still serious character moments before that too.
and the gameplay is great too! yknow that thing where you look out the window of a car and you imagine a ninja or something running on the rooftops? its kinda like that, but youre imaging a little guy jumping between the notes in a rhythm game. thats such a fun gameplay gimmick
so, a lot gets posted about "quirky earthbound-inspired rpgs (which may or may not be about depression)". i always thought that its was kinda stupid, because people can only ever name omori if you ask them for examples. and thats not even to say that theres a drought, no theres tons of em! Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass, Knuckle Sandwich, Heartbound, Oddity, the LISA trilogy... oh, and obviously Undertale. all of those seem like direct reactions, but none of them (to my knowledge) seem like call-and-response answers that directly build on their inspirations like how Undertale subverts traditional rpg game mechanics...
except everhood. if undertale is about building and examining a world with plot-important 4th wall breaking where rpg mechanics are deconstructed, everhood painstakingly reconstructs them. this isnt to say that its not post-modern, quite the opposite. it intentionally builds a world that has the same post-modern sensibilities, where the rpg mechanics are welcomed entirely
this is your last call for spoilers. if youre an Undertale fan, or just a fan of the narrative analysis of traditional game mechanics, you need to play this game
for example, Undertale makes a point of emphasizing to the player that the monsters arent just disposable enemies, theyre people who deserve to live. Everhood does the inverse: everyone is an immortal going insane, and they deserve to be put out of their misery. this still humanizes and makes you sympathize with the encounters without removing the violent conflict. instead of everyone deserving to live, everyone deserves to die, but not in a no-mercy style "im a monster because im bored" way. honestly, i think Everhood improves on this from Undertale. everyone has an overworld sprite, they all reoccur in multiple locations, and theres only one of them. its hard to feel a connection to just another vulkin or just another woshua; here even characters like the goth store clerk form more of a connection through repetition.
another thing i like is the silent protagonist. Undertale characterizes Frisk as a reveal, telling you that you the player are not this character just because youre controlling them. enforcing your will over the narrative is a bad thing: that means youre retroactively making chara evil. in Everhood, the player controlling the character is diegetic, and entirely welcomed.
basically, Undertale was designed with the notion "lets make a game where the player treating it like a normal rpg (the player is the main character, killing is good) is unwelcome and unfulfilling by subverting normal tropes" to which Everhood answers "okay, now lets build a world with the same level of subversion, but playing it like a normal rpg (the player is the main character, killing is good) is VERY welcome and fulfilling".
so yeah, wonderful game, totally recommend it. if i had to pick one thing it does best, i gotta go with the narrative resonance, but the characters are a close second. green mage is such a cool dude.
closing this out, the sequel has been announced and theres a trailer out. i have... no idea how theyre going to continue the narrative. i figured the buddhist imagery was hinting at reincarnation so the new game+ was diegetic too... my guess is that either theyre gonna do something narratively disconnected but with evolved gameplay like how final fantasy works, or its basically gonna be like... a different everhood. as in the place. looks killer either way

I've been playing Starfield properly for a week now, and some thoughts:
I think the most important thing to say is: I am having fun. I am enjoying playing this game.
But i do worry about the games... legs so to speak. I played Fallout 4 for like... a whole year. By the time i felt like i was running out of base game, the first expansions were dropping.
Starfield is... a different beast. It doesnt have one big, large, handcrafted map. Its got a lot of procedurally generated maps, with random bits and pieces. And so there isn't much exploring. And its the exploring i kinda like with Bethesda? The only other games i've played that have made an open world feel so alive are.... BOTW/ TOTK. Like, open world is a dime a dozen these days, but most of them are empty Ubisoft-likes (what i call "checklist open worlds").
But Starfield, by virtue of being a space exploration game, cant quite have that handcrafted touch I know and love from Bethesda. Like, theres only a handful of ways to do a space exploration game and thats: - you limit the exploration to a handful of locations, each with a handcrafted map. But you lose the feeling of the vastness of a galaxy (This is what ME: Andromeda and The Outer Worlds did) - You lose the open world maps, and go with more focused areas. You get a chance to show more planets, but you lose the exploration feeling. (.... This is what the first ME Trilogy did, and theyre not exactly exploration games) - You procedurally generate as much content as possible, and only add handcrafted touches when theres a specific quest. You get the vastness of the galaxy, but it loses many places of actual interest. This is what Starfield has done.
And so... one atmosphere-less planet is kinda the same as another? The colours may change, but largely youre only there because you have a quest there, or you need a specific resource that that planet has in abundance. The places of interest just arent that interesting. And most of them are atmosphere-less planets (Because... thats most planets we've discovered after all)
The game also does take a whiillle to start to open up. I've got over 24 hours of playtime clocked up (though i imagine a good 3-4 hours are just idling on menus as i do things like... cook) and i've largely just travelled between Alpha Centuri and Sol.... I've just made the trip to Akila, i've spent all of 5 minutes in Hope Town, and I have no idea where Neon even is. Theres nothing really between those places, its just fast travelling everywhere. And i'm usually a fast travel abuser, but sometimes the best moments in a Bethesda game are when you slow down and take the scenic route, yaknow? Locations needing fast travelling between them kinda ruins that a bit. And theres generally not 2 settlements on the same planet, despite that probably making a lot of sense (if Jamison is good for human habitation, why is New Atlantis the only settlement we can visit?), so theres not exactly any real random encounters on the ground maps.
My hope that the roleplaying in this game was better than FO4 because they ditched the voice protagonist was in vain. Theres kinda 2 options to continue most conversations, and anything below the first 2 (maybe 3) options are Questions to learn more - but not to move the conversation to the next part of the tree. I havent seen a huge number of skill related dialogue options, except like... medicine? Thats the one ive seen pop up the most.
Performance wise, i've largely not had any issues. Couple of crashes, but thats par for the course with Bethesda. .... But i noticed some obvious frame rate dips in Akila. Like, something in that location the xbox just did not like. But nowhere else. I also paid for a month of game pass ultimate so i could swap between my pc and xbox and see what i liked. ... I havent even tried to play on pc, because i'm happy enough on xbox. That, and the pc keybindings are... uuhh a problem. The game has so many different controls going on that i cant move WASD to any other controls without breaking some other system. Arrow keys are vital somewhere else. IJKL is vital somewhere else.... I'm not playing with WASD, because thats uncomfortable (i'm using the wrong hand for it!). And theres no point in playing on a controller on my pc, lol. I may as well play on the comfy sofa if i want to play with a controller. Will probably mess with my ability to play many mods, but honestly... i'm still uncertain about how much i'll care about the game by the time people start making some real good mods.
IDK man. I'm having fun, i'm enjoying the game. But it probably is a 7/10 game, yaknow? Theres a lot of things holding it back, but those things are also fairly central to the actual vision Bethesda had. Jurys still out on how much blorbo thoughts i can get out of this, mostly because I still dont quite know enough about the world to get a backstory going on. And thats going to be the thing that really makes everything else click. But even then, I could get an okay enough backstory out of The Outer Worlds and that never clicked, because the game just didnt have enough content for me to Really Care.

why steve rogers returning to the past was wrong
disclaimer: im clearly a stucky enthusiast, but please, do not be thrown off by that. i admit, there may be undertones of bias because of that in the following, but i did my best with trying to lay out the facts and draw logical conclusions, so do please give me a chance. also, i may have accidentaly omitted some moments and some quotes may not be 100% word for word, as my memory lowkey sucks. ALSO this is NOT a peggy hate post!! i think shes a dope and underrated character and quite frankly she was done dirty. but i also definitely h8 the trope of badass woman falls for the hero.
first and foremost, every sane person knows endgame was complete and utter bullshit when dealing with steves character, so this post will be more for you to maybe show (and hopefully convince) some stubborn friend or family member. nice, concise (not) and including proof from the movies (+a few tweets and stucky undertones, if u dont fw that i respect it but bucky is an integral part to steves character regardless of how u interpret their relationship) here is why steves character development was thrown away at the end of endgame.
let us begin at looking at the cap trilogy.
in ca:tfa it should be noted that steve had no one to return to in the 40s, except bucky. i believe steves relationship with peggy was no where near as developed as it should have been to elicit him returning exclusively for her. as we are aware, steves driving force has absolutely always been bucky. bucky was there for steve after his parents died, when he was sick, and always protected him from whatever trouble he got himself into. "until the end of the line" right? steves relationship with peggy was forced and short lived, literally, we're talking a matter of months here. i need to keep emphasising the important disparity between bucky and peggy, as it is absolutely key in this whole argument. steve dropped everything and went against every order just to even attempt to save bucky. even the slightest chance of him surviving being captured was enough for steve to break into a hydra camp and free the 107th division. steve even had the chance to capture zola, one of the main villains and masterminds of the war, but again, steve prioritised bucky. when theyre trying to escape the exploding hydra camp, the exchange between steve and bucky is critical. steve says "go! get out of here!" as all he wanted was bucky escaping safely. he put bucky's life over his own (this wasnt the first time he did this, nor the last) but bucky rooted himself to the spot, and yelled back "no, not without you!". they both escaped safely as we know, and then steve gathers the howling commandos to take down the red skull. bucky then falls off the train, nd steve blames himself for his death, even visibly crying over it twice. steves morals went from "i dont wanna kill anyone. i dont like bullies, i dont care where theyre from" before buckys death, to "i wont stop until all of hydra are dead or captured" after. stuff happens and steve defeats the red skull and is now in control of the flying ship with the bombs. he connects the comms with peggy and she tries to convince him theres another way to disarm the ship. steve was so dedicated at that point he didnt even want to hear it. he didnt even attempt to do anything to ensure his survival. this alone proves, peggy was not important enough to him to return to.
next is ca:tws. The stevebucky movie. in the museum, peggy confirms that steve saved the man from the 107th division who eventually became her husband (steve was never in the 107th, just to clarify) i believe her husbands name was daniel sousa (as revealed in the marvels agents of shield show) steve then finds out peggy is alive and talks to her. she, in short, tells him she's lived her life, and it was his turn to live his in the time hes in. the "my best girl" line was unnecessary and out of place; again, steve barely knew her. again, shit goes down, and steve finds out the winter soldier is bucky and immediately drops everything, and becomes dead set on saving him. not killing, not imprisoning, but saving him. no matter the cost. "he saw me, and he didnt even know me" "hes not the kind you save, hes the kind you stop. he won't recognise you" "he will." god, steve KNEW bucky would recognise him. regardless of the brainwashing, steve managed to break through the barrier hydra fought so hard to drill into buckys mind. nothing ever broke him out of that state exept for steve. "im not gonna fight you, youre my friend." "youre my mission" "then finish it. cos im with you till the end of the line." [[good fucking lord let me break out of my essay-esque semi professional format here and just say how fucking heartbreaking those lines are. oh my god. read them, over and over until it hits you.]] steve shows us again, that he is willing to not only die for bucky, but literally die by his hand. he would let bucky kill him. he'd dropped his shield. he didnt fight back. steve always, always, ALWAYS got up and fought back. always. exept that time. the time bucky could have killed him. that scene is the essence of "im with you till the end of the line" because then, it was true. it was true because steve was okay with dying at buckys mercy. theres a difference between sacrificing yourself for the greater good (steve going into the ice), willing to die for someone (steve risking his life multiple times in attempts to save bucky) and finally, being willing to let someone kill you, because you love and trust them so much (hellicarier scene). the difference between peggy and bucky's relationship to steve is that steve may be willing to die for either, but only willing to be killed by one. not to mention, bucky pulled steve from the river. he recognised him. steve broke through 70 years of brainwashing with such impact it literally drove bucky away from hydra out of his own free will.
in between ca:tws and ca:cw its confirmed (im p sure sam says it) that him and steve looked for bucky for two. years. even off screen, bucky was steves priority.
im going to squeeze in 2 points from from age of ultron here, for chronology's sake:
steves worst nightmare, as portayed in the movie, is LITERALLY going back to the 40s and being stuck there (with peggy too??lmfao) and also the quote "family, stability, the man who wanted all that went in the ice 75 years ago. i think another one came out." objectively confirms that steve isn't the man he used to be, and doesnt want to return to the past. aou may have sucked, but that doesn't mean the character development should be thrown away.
ca:cw. hoo boy. steve went against 117 countries and half of his closest friends and colleagues because he believed bucky was innocent of the bombing of the un conference. god, steve quite literally, did everything to defend and protect bucky. though i shall acknowledge that steve did attend peggy's funeral, however, there was no real connotations there other than the fact he was mourning her death (understabdibly so). steve then proceeds to protect bucky for 2 hours 27 mins and 41 seconds to the point where they escape together to siberia after the airport fight. "i dont know if im worth all this steve" "what you did all those years... it wasnt you. you didnt have a choice." "i know. but i did it" again, absolutely heartbreaking quotes if you read it a couple of times and truly understand the meaning of them. steve somewhat indirectly tells bucky yes, yes he is worth all of this. otherwise, he wouldn't be doing it. a quote to support that would be "for the longest time, i always did what i thought was right." (disclaimer this is not a direct quote i deadass couldnt find it to save my life, i belive steve said it at some point during civil war or tws, but the point is, bucky is the only thing that could have shaken steves morals so intensely.) and finally, the most important part of cw, the fight at the end with tony. bucky and steve constantly protected each other. steve kept fighting because he was fighting for bucky. to keep him safe from tony and the world. he got up, time and time again. "i can do this all day." the fact that he said that to tony, some people consider them the closest of friends, proves again, a million times over, bucky is more important to steve than literally anything else, INCLUDING his shield. his mantle. he dropped it and left it like it was nothing, because his priority was bucky. as always.
theres not much to discuss for infinity war other than their hug whicg was honestly just adorable.
mmmmm endgame. i will not go into how much i hate that movie because it would be a rant quintuple the length of this one. in the support group, steve dead ass fucking says "you gotta move on. you gotta move on" and that sentiment was literally forgotten at the end. my main point for endgame is this. people tend to tell me, the reason steve abandoned bucky and went back to be with peggy is because he knew that he was finally safe. :/. if you had half a braincell youd know that's not true. the steve we know, never would have left bucky for good, ESPECIALLY after the "dont do anything stupid until i get back" exchange [[god i want to beat the shit out of the r*ssos]] mostly because, bucky had fucking no one in the time he was living in!!! no family, no friends and most heartbreakingly, no one he could trust. (yes sam was there but were just seeing their friendship develop now in tfatws, all that wasnt there in endgame) and secondly, what made steve think bucky was entirely safe??? half of the worlds population just suddenly reappeared, which as we see now, there were massive consequences for that. i simply believe steve is not that stupid. steve going back was disrespectful not only to his character, but to bucky AND peggy. most importantly, the steve we've been watching since 2011 would NEVER abandon bucky, no matter how safe he thought he was (he visited him frequently in wakanda, the safest place on the planet arguably ffs) especially for such a dumbass and quite frankly, nonsensical reason as going back to be with peggy, who clearly stated to him she moved on, and so should he (which he did. idk endgame writers prolly didnt watch the previous movies :/) its not even debatable. bucky is more important to steve than peggy. even in terms of screentime.
now allow some tweets to speak for me, this one being the absolute most important one:
Tumblr media
ladies and gentlefolk, all of the stuff ive said can be summarised in that last line. "it would be contrary to who he is."
heres some more:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and now finally, id like to briefly mention steve and tfatws, so beware of spoilers (writing this as of ep 4 coming out; praying it doesn't age badly)
bucky mentions steve, unprompted, fucking constantly. he clearly isnt over steve leaving, and im hoping that gets acknowledged and talked out in the show.
in conclusion, tl:dr, steve shouldn't have returned to the past and stayed there, it is contrary to who he is, as shown to us through his trilogy and other appearances in the mcu. not to mention the timeline bullshit in endgame makes zero sense in the first place.

ive made a few of these bingo sheets and theyre fun so i decided to make one not just for e3 but also JUST for splatoon 3 (not just for e3 but for like the whole lifetime of the game). also heres my updated list of characters id like to see in smash, ordered generally by which id like more and/or think are the most realistic
since min min got in i took out helix, and since i couldnt decide whether to add in waluigi or madeline i added another row (realistically i dont think any indies are getting in but i threw some in anyway). also i was like “oh yeah maybe theyd put in a gen viii pokemon” so i threw in hatterene since thats one of my favorites.
also as for waluigi (and shovel knight for that matter) i think it would be nice to see an assist trophy get in just to break that rule. also i remember being super surprised he wasnt in brawl (back then i thought he and wario were equally important) and even though that was based on a wrong impression ive still felt like he should be in there ever since
notes about the bingos under the cut
really is about time for those n64 games, especially now that mario is dead so theyre free to release sm64 on it. game boy games would be nice sometime too
would also make sense to include banjo-kazooie in that, nintendos had a good relationship with microsoft lately and the total absence of anything banjo-kazooie on the switch is odd since it’s a dlc character (every other one has a game on switch they can use for cross-marketing, even if joker’s took a while) and i think the best explanation for that would be that theyre holding off for the nso n64 app (this is easiest from a technical standpoint because all they have to do is make a deal to use the roms)
when are they putting octolings in mk8d
xenoblade chronicles x is one of the only wii u games left that they could port (aside from ones that wouldnt make much sense like splatoon and ssb4) so i guess that might as well happen sometime. also monolith soft might be doing something else besides helping with splatoon 3
im not ready for metroid prime 4 (im over halfway through mp2 and therefore the trilogy as a whole) but it’s been a while, they might show it and it could even come out this year
hal apparently recently hinted at a new kirby game or something
the upgraded switch is obviously going to be called the Nintendo Switch ͥ  since they already did the ds lite so theyre clearly naming everything in the family after the ds family, theres absolutely no flaw in this logic. idk if theyre showing it, but unlike 2019 they didnt say they werent showing new hardware (just that they were showing software, which could be taken as denying rumors, but they sometimes specify when certain things arent being shown)
metroid prime trilogy also might come this year. would make sense to release it before mp4 since not everyone is going to buy a wii u to get it (and at this point that doesnt get nintendo any money since they stopped making them)
where is detective pikachu 2. i hope it has the blue pikachu from that first tease they gave us in like 2014 (2013? that was a loooong time ago idk)
they said this was MOSTLY 2021 so i am absolutely getting my hopes up for splatoon 2
the two sinnoh games could likely be there
would be super cool if oddity came to switch. and almost as ironic as megalovania getting into smash
we havent seen the botw sequel for a couple years so we’re kind of due for an update on that
it’s ace attorney’s 20th anniversary this year so maybe theyre doing something. theyre already porting those games though so idk. maybe he’s getting in smash
whats with that watermelon mario render
i held off on watching a playthrough for ndrv3 on the off chance it came to switch and i could play a dangan ronpa game for real for once but it’s now been 4 years and we just passed the 10th anniversary of the series (albeit during a pandemic when i wouldnt expect them to have done anything) so it would be cool to see the series come to switch. i think if it still doesnt after this though i’ll just watch the playthrough, 4 years is long enough. amazed ive avoided spoilers this long, i still know next to nothing about the game
im about done with acnh but im still waiting on those splatoon items. and i ran out of storage in february so i need more of that too
nintendo did stuff for zelda’s 30th anniversary so i doubt theyre forgetting the 35th. maybe wwhd/tphd ports, idk
been a couple years since fire emblem, intelligent systems is probably up to something besides planning yet another paper mario spinoff
miyamoto forgot pikmin 4 in the oven 6 years ago and it got burnt to a crisp and thats why it hasnt come out yet because he had to start over
and splatoon
the inklings scared daft punk into quitting so now that theres no competition in the robot musician scene they should have a daft punk style group
i waited and waited and neither of my top two splatoon stages (flounder and d’alfonsino) came back in splatoon 2 so i hope just because splatoon 3 isnt in inkopolis doesnt mean they still wont return
would be sick as hell if there was a real hide and seek mode instead of just sticking to your own rules in private battles. havent played that since 2015 but it was super fun
show us the effects of the chaos world
i wanted mc craig to have a song in octo expansion and they didnt deliver. heres another chance
splatnet 3 baby
cant wait for nogami to do a funny 3 pose
abxy came back for splatoon 2.... am i gonna be that lucky again...?
salmon run doesnt make sense if youre friends with a smallfry but they could either change the story context (you just fight “evil” salmonids?) or replace it with an equally fun co-op mode
amiibo!!! i think i said this before but they should label them by weapons if these cephalopods dont have genders, would make more sense (the gendered ones had different weapons anyway)
returning characters!!!! would like to see everyone have a role of some kind
maybe #GearForAll wasnt successful in getting the emperor/spy/mecha gear, but perhaps theyll at least consider not making that stuff exclusive this time around
squid girl gear should be back. and they should call it a dress instead of a tunic because its a dress. and theres no gender now anyway
as ive said before... TRIPLIES!! you hold one in each hand and another in your mouth. and you can spin around like the tasmanian devil
remove splatfest tee annoyances: you should have a prompt at the end of a splatfest to pay to scrub your tee (to make sure you get the chunks) also it should be on a neutral brand so you dont end up with an overabundance of ink resistance up (or whatever else)
better online and cloud saves would certainly justify having a second splatoon game on the same console, as much as im loving that it exists
hopefully theres a global testfire again
sooner or later the workers will rise up and kill mr grizz
remember in splatoon 1 where if you had squid beatz (via the amiibo) you could “play” it in the lobby and change the music? then you were stuck listening to only bubble bath in splatoon 2? why did they take that option away they should bring it back
looking at those apartment buildings in the trailer i think it would be cool if you had your own room and could decorate it
an octavio redemption arc would be fun to see. in the manga he stole the zapfish because the octarians had an energy crisis, and in the end they worked out a deal to share the electricity

[ THE MANDALORIAN S2 FINALE SPOILERS ETC ETC ETC ]
OK DHIGDSFHG i already talked abt this at length on discord w/ friends so im not going to sound very heated, bc im just repeating myself here , but like ... i didnt like it lol and im not saying this bc boba got nerfed hard, i just knew there was no way theyre gonna make that finale good because they set up so many stupid plotlines. i knew it was gonna suck the second i saw bo-katan AHAHAHAAH i was like oh no we ARE doing the mandalore plotline in season finale HUH ??? NICE .
this entire season all din ever does is meet new people but never form emotional bonds with them. take him and boba for example, lol, as hypocritical as its gonna sound coming from me. the writers/directors for this show KNOW how cool the visual of din and boba standing next to each other is, they milk the SHIT out of their scenes, but that’s all they ever do with them. they just put them next to each other and don’t let them talk. they don’t let them BOND over things they have in common and i know that din was pressed to save his baby etc etc BUT UHHHH APPARENTLY IT WAS VERY IMPORTANT FOR HIM TO HAVE A BONDING MOMENT WITH UHHHHH MAYFELD ?????? WHO THEN PEACED OUT OF THE SHOW AND WASNT EVEN IN THE NEXT EPISODE ?????????????????????????
din doesn’t get to .... bond with the people who are apparently willing to die for this green gremlin baby. when he puts together this whole team , it just feels empty as hell. he hasn’t even said more than two sentences to fennec. what’s the fucking point. what’s the fucking point of frontloading this show with characters if theres no payoff, if there are no meaningful interactions between them ???
the biggest fucking joke of that finale is when they set up this enormous threat of the darktroopers and then a character WHO HASNT BEEN IN THE SHOW BEFORE , DOESNT EXIST IN THE CONTEXT OF THE SHOW, JUST APPEARS OUT OF NOWHERE AND REMOVES THE MAIN THREAT TO THE PROTAGONIST IN LIKE TWO MINUTES AND THEN PEACES OUT, LIKE ???? HAHAHAHA WHAT THE FUCK !!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT THE FUCK !!!!!!!!! WHAT IS THAT !!!!!! IMAGINE FOR A SECOND THAT THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY DOESNT EXIST, WOULDNT YOU FUCKING LOSE YOUR SHIT AT THAT???? ITS SO FUCKING STUPID ????????
AND APPARENTLY THE ONLY REASON WHY DIN LETS BABY YODA GO WITH LUKE IS ONLY BECAUSE HE WATCHED THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY AND KNOWS THIS IS LUKE SKYWALKER AS PORTRAYED BY MARK HAMILL AND THEREFORE HE CAN TRUST HIM. im not saying i hate luke or something like that i just think this was executed SO fucking poorly, this is a scene of this show that cannot stand on its own without being propped up by the original trilogy. and the main appeal of the mandalorian s1 was that it DIDNT need star wars, now there are like 15 supplementary materials you need to watch to get all of the nuance and i hate this i hate this i HATE this, OH MY GODDDDDDDDDDDDDD
SARA POINTED THIS OUT ON DISCORD TOO, LIKE. THE SHOW IS TITLED ‘THE MANDALORIAN’ BUT IN THE END, ITS ALL ABOUT THE JEDI, OF COURSE IT FUCKING ISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS AHHH FUCK I KNOW I SAID IM NOT GONNA SOUND HEATED BUT I LIED I LIED IM STILL HEATED ABOUT THAT, ABOUT THE WAY THESE STAR WARS MEN ARE RUINING THE GOOD THING THEY HAD GOING ON BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO REFERENCE THEIR OCs OR WHATEVER OHHHH MY gDODD NOBODY CARES ABOUT THE REBELS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOBODY CARES ABOUT THE CLONE WARS, STOP TALKING ABOUT THE JEDI, STOP TALKING ABOUT THE JEDIIIIIII OH MY FOgf hgofhghgfh----
very happy for boba tho. thank you.

you know what fuck it alternate last jedi scenes
not fully thought out but roll with me
were introduced to luke as rey tries to give him back the lightsaber. his face is full of sadness and there is an air of palpable loss. he pushes it back into her hand, closing her fingers overtop of it. they have some dialogue, where she pleads to be trained and he declines, referencing the loss he experienced the last time he taught force users. she pleads again, trying to emphasize the necessity and drastic situation witu the force order. luke doesnt answer and instead asks her how she found him. rey responds that a few droids, and commander organa helped her. luke visibly perks up at the mention of organa, and quietly asks "...Leia?". Rey nods and replies "She misses you. R2, and Threepio too." Luke sits down, and motions for rey to join him, and she does. Luke stares out over the sea towards the horizon. Almost wistfully, he begins to speak. "We trained together, once. Leia and I. She took to it like a fish to water. We had to stop, though. Force training.... It takes time. Time she didnt have. The galaxy needed her, still needs her. Theres always a place for women like her, strong, devoted, determined, focused. Always somethin that needs doin, needs fixin." He pauses for a moment, staring off into the sea. "...Theres no place for people like me anymore. Not out there. Im a relic of the past, just like the temple here. Past its time..." He looks over to Rey. "The battle youre facing, it wont be easy. Whenever shadow falls over the galaxy, it spreads. Fast. And it doesnt let go without a fight. You, Leia, your friends... I hope you're prepared for a war, because thats what theyll give you. And.... I can't send you into somethin like that unprepared. Couldn't call myself a Jedi otherwise, not that theres anyone left to care. I'll train you, as best i can, make sure you have a fighting chance." As he says this, Rey grins widely, and excitedly goes to hand him the lightsaber, but his face becomes stern. "Only in the force though. No lightsaber training." Rey goes to protest, that she has to know how to fight the first order, but luke repeats himself. "No. Thats my one condition. I'll train you, for Leia, and for the light, but I wont train you with the saber, not now and not ever." His expression is one that brokers no arguments. Looking dissapointed, Rey agrees to his terms, and Luke lightens up, and now you can see some of the luke of the original trilogy luke in him. Rey gets her own room, and Luke trains her in the ways of the force. She has noticeable strong points and weak spots. Shes a natural at aspects of using the force on people. She excels at using the forces connections to people, to persuade like in the interrogation room, but luke shows her other aspects of it as well. It is revealed that during her fight with kylo in tfa, she unconsciously tapped into this ability and used the force to bolster herself, to sharpen her senses and reflexes, and to use the force to predict kylos attacks, and that it was triggered by her worry for finn. Luke further explains that through the force all things are connected, and noticing her natural inclination towards force connections, encourages her to try and see if she can use the force to see someone. luke explains that its easier with people you feel a strong bond and connection to, and as rey meditates, we see the screen pan to finn, before hes awoken from his coma. Rey frowns, and murmurs to him "I promise I'll make this right for you, Finn" and, as if in response, we see Finn stir slightly, but doesnt awaken. She then visits chewie, who is working on the milleniun falcon with poe, and then to Leia, who senses Rey and smiles towards her, knowing that shes found luke and that theyre both okay. Afterwards, Luke explains that most of the study of the force focused on its ability for combat, and that reys talents could have uses even he might not know of, foreshadowing the use of the force to heal in TROS (rn im leaning towards force healing and force inspiration being finns primary talents, and finn healing poe).
Sometime during the night after training with luke, rey has another dream, similar to the one when she held anakins lightsaber. We hear a familiar voice repeat "Rey... these are the first steps..." as the camera pans through the island towards a secluded location. Another night, rey decides to find it, and follows the path in her vision, until she finds someone in a cloak. As she approaches, the figure turns towards her, and pulls down the hood, revealing ewan macgregor!obi wan, in the outfit he wore as ben on tattoinne. they have some small talk, and obi wan says that while he understands lukes reasoning, its important for rey to know how to wield her saber. rey asks what he means, because luke wont tell her. obi wan recounts the betrayal of ben solo and how he became kylo ren. rey asks how he knows luke, and obi wan replies that he was the last of the jedi, and that he trained luke as he trains rey now. rey notices his use of past tense, and how that would make him even older than luke now, and yet he doesnt look it. obi wan replies that the universe is out of balance, and that those that have passed may return through the force, if there is a need for it. From then on, as luke trains rey in the force, obi wan trains her to use a light saber at night. During the montage we notice that while rey starts off strong, she eventually starts to struggle with the saber, and gets frustrated. Obi Wan explains that the wielder and the saber must be as one, and that the saber chooses the wielder. In confusion, rey asks "Didnt it choose me?" referencing her vision in tfa. Obi Wan explains that the saber is old, and that it was calling out for someone, and that rey heard it, but its true wielder is someone else. Obi Wan then explains that to continue her training, she must forge her own light saber, and explains what that entails. Rey seems excited at the prospect, and her background as a scrapper is put to use. She makes the handle with ease, using bits and pieces of scrap around the island, and seems pleased with the result. The handle is inelegant, but not ugly, and while cobbled together from various pieces, there is a kind of unity to them. It more closely resembles reys staff. The final piece is kyber crystal, retrieved from within the jedi temple. While Rey journeys through it with Obi Wan, they talk, and Rey comments on how familiar obi wan is, despite never having met him before. Obi Wan smiles sadly and remarks that she reminds him of someone as well. Long ago, the jedi werent hunted down, and he had to flee into hiding after losing everything dear to him. He tried to settle down into a normal life, and met someone and started a family, but their child was force sensitive, and drew the attention of the empire. His family was split apart as they fled, and he never saw them again. Luke, to him, reminded him of the family he never got to have, and now he is reminded once again...
I have no idea how to continue from here, but heres some key points
-Rey Kenobi babeyyyyyy that was always my fave theory. Obi Wan never got to raise his children, and they lived their life unaware of their force sensitivity. They eventually had rey, but her own force sensitivity drew the attention of the first order. They left her on jakku to keep her safe, intending to return, but the first order killed them before they could
-FINN SKYWALKER anakins lightsaber chose him, but because of age and neglect, could only weakly call out. Rey was the first force sensitive who touched it, sparking it to life. After finn used it in tfa, it yearns to go back to him, and fulfill its destiny of restoring balance. Both finn and the lightsaber cast off their dark past to restore balance and justice to the galaxy
-Some nice scenes with obi wan and luke, and some with leia and luke. its a damned shame they didnt interact more in the sequel trilogy.
-Snoke abuses reys force connection ability, as that is also his talent, and uses kylo to block and antagonize rey
-Most of reys training is interspersed throughout the movie as the pov changes between her, finn, and poe
-lots of references to the last jedi so the audience thinks it could mean different things, until the end of tlj, where finn finds out hes force sensitive and the heir to the skywalker legacy and lightsaber, and that its him who is the last true jedi
-i didnt watch tlj or tros so i have no idea what happened in those movies to reference those plot points here, sorry (unu)
-TLJ is interspered with scenes of kylo bein a nazi fuck and plot build up for him and snoke being the anatagonists of tros
-disney pay me for the emotional damages i suffered from knowing r#ylo happened
OMG i really really really like your way of explaining that the lightsaber actually calls to finn

Hey remember when I said I’d do a lyric analysis of northern downpour, and then didn’t do that for like 6 months? yeah here we go:
the opening line of Northern Downpour: “if all our life is but dream” really sets the tone for the song, its half quoting a children’s song; establishing the almost nursery rhyme aesthetic the has going on for large parts. The changes Ryan makes to the line also reveal important thematic elements in the song--“life is but a dream” is changed from a definitive and general statement; its no longer commenting about general reality but rather questioning all his established feelings about their relationship. He is turning to the other person and saying “is any of this real? is this all a fantasy ive built up in my head?” it feels almost as if he is Begging them to contradict him, to tell him what they have is good and Real and not just “broken glass”, that for a second looked like “diamonds”, and although theres a desperate uncertainty to how hes wording these thoughts “/if/ all our life is but a dream” “/do appear/ to be, just like broken glass /to me/“ you get a sense its less that he’s unsure and more that he has this realization and he is /Praying/ he is wrong.
The second verse seems to be the other person’s reply, but instead of addressing his thoughts and questions they turns to what seem like general criticisms of him “i cant believe that genius only comes across in storms of fable foreign tongues”, this line seems to be a dig at how he expresses himself: unorganized, wild, and hard to understand, while they insist thats this cant be the only way, they offer him this rather than, as noted before, addressing his fear that they’re relationship is nothing more than a fantasy or a dream.
The chorus seems to shift away slightly from the conversation the first to verses are detailing, the tone also switches back to the nursery rhyme that was present in the first line of the song. It’s directed to a personified version of the moon, a common theme in english nursery rhymes, it’s also reminiscent of ‘rain, rain go away’ although reversed in meaning. Overall the line is almost a prayer, begging the moon to say in the in the hope that that would freeze this moment forever, this hope adds a sense of anxiety to the whole song as if whatever happiness is held in this moment is fragile and will inevitably end with the day break. Using a child like tone gives the line an innocent edge, innocent as in ignorant rather, he’s asking for an impossible thing, wording it like a nursery rhyme or children’s song acknowledges this, asking for this night/this moment/ maybe even this entire relationship to last is as fruitless as child singing to that rain in the hope that it will bring fair weather
“Sugarcane in the easy morning/weathervanes my one and lonely”; speaks of Contrast; the first line feels to me to be about happiness and contentment: sugarcane is sweet and wonderful but also simple and natural, he also used the word ‘easy’ which i think compounds that, its a situation that is happy and beautiful but also effortless then you add the setting of the morning time which brings with it a sense of domesticality, and so the line paints a picture of a relationship or situation that is blissful and warm but natural and content also(much like a home)This is immediately contrasted with the next line; ‘weathervanes my one and lonely’ : weathervanes are an image that instantly conjure(for me anyway) ideas of isolation, they are distant from everything, they’re an object you own but have no physical contact with, this is then emphasized by the weathervane being described as lonely, Ryan, by using a possessive phrase aligns himself with the weathervane, creating the suggestion they are the same(he is also isolated and alone). Further more the choice of a weathervane suggests location as well, theyre an object rarely if ever found in the city, an object that is completely connected to farm life, as this is a song written by someone who lives in a city but travels long, long distances through the country seeing things like weathervanes would be a visual reminder that he’s a far from home as it well as being an object that is ‘lonely’ in its own right, bringing us back to the ‘one and lonely’ part, they’re joined together by their equal loneliness.
we shift back to the conversation here with a description of the of the other person talking: “through playful lips made of yarn”, Ryan has been using body imagery through out the song, and theres often been a subtle personification of the body parts, which is very true in this case. Instead of the speaker being simply described as talking the words move through their ‘playful lips’, which gives the words an edge of agency in their own right. But in this case he hasn’t just personified the lips, he’s also given them a sense of the artificial, by describing them as being made of ‘yarn’, not only is it a artificial material, it also has a strikingly different texture to lips(the line wouldnt have the same effect had he used plastic instead) the description gains a very haptic feel to it, but also alien and strange, potentially indicating his feelings towards the other person at this point.
The emotion of the verse starts shifts back to the more distraught feeling at the start of the song, the “Capricorn” is described as “fragile” and the words the came from the “playful lips” now “unravel”. As if the as the conversation progresses the other person gets more and more upset, and their speech more jumbled.
There isn’t a clear indication who or what ‘that fragile capricorn’ is, the natural inclination is that it’s the other person(presumably they are a capricorn) but its place in the verse seems to suggest otherwise— it seem to be the cause for the mood change, “/That/ fragile Capricorn /unraveled/ words like moths upon old scarves”, like it is the cause for the unraveling, I want to argue that its an outside force or situation, potentially the conversation they are currently having; tentative and hanging over their heads.
this is immediately followed by, what ryan described as the central line of p.o.: “I know the world’s a broken bone but melt your headaches call it home”, in the context of this song potentially being about a troubled relationship it could be taken to be about that specifically, a plea either to the other person or himself to keep working on the problems in their relationship, but I think its almost meant to be taken in general sense,(potentially as well) its not enough to just acknowledge the ways in which your life, or the wide world is hard and harmful and then to wallow it that pain, rather you have to then be proactive in that situation and Make It Better(which is a bit of a theme in jon’s solo music but i Digress).
the song then moves back into a repetition of the ‘sugarcane’ line, eventually interlaced with ‘hey moon’, finally the song ends on two new lines: “You are at the top of my lungs/Drawn to the ones who never yawn” and return to the body imagery that has ran through the song, “you are at the top of my lungs” has implication of someone ‘taking your breathe away’(tho its infinitely better worded that i actually feel guilty describing it as such but i dont know how else to put it). yawning is a sign of tiredness or boredom so the opposite of that invokes connotations of focus or intensity, tho i got to say im unclear as to whether that line refers to Him being “drawn to the ones who never yawn” or the other person, I default on it being the other person because of the wording but it makes more sense to me if it refers to ryan idk
basically northern downpour is a song that sits tentatively strung between the knowledge that maybe this relationship isnt the healthiest and being So in love with the other person that you almost dont care but mainly desperately want to be proved wrong, desperately begging the moon to stay in the sky so this Good moment doesnt end and you wont have to face reality by the harsh light of day
Some Notes
•this might be a a bit of a hot take idk it isnt really what i thought about the song until i thought intensly about each line for hours but once i landed on it the more i became convinced that was what the song was talking about, its still just my interpretation tho, how ever you interpretated it is just as valid u know, and if you wanna send me your thoughts about northern downpour(or any song off pretty odd lmao) please feel free! i obviously have Thoughts lmaoo
•kinda wanna write an entire piece about how northern downpour, dangrous blues and lie to the truth are basically a trilogy, kinda wanna cry
•i had to physically stop myself from writing an entire paragraph about how ‘i know the worlds a broken bone but melt your headaches call it home’ is a progression from the central ideas of fever and im real emotional about it but i managed to control myself cos it didnt really fit

@nbellic ok im gonna make it its own post to keep it organized :pensive: under readmore cause of length and stuff
its horror so usual trigger warnings apply anyone reading ymmv if theres something important ill mention it -anything universal horror (extremely watchable with no need for warnings since this was the days of the hayes code, theyre all classics but my personal favorite is dracula obviously) -lake mungo (found footage mockumentary film from australia with an extremely realistic presentation about a grieving family and the death of their daughter and their sons sightings of her supposed ghost, has a very interesting twist and is less scary and more somber, more about handling grief and the reality of death. has a moment involving csa because of a reveal later on, and you see her dead body which becomes integral to later in the film) -the last broadcast (a found footage film that predates blair witch and i think is much much better thats presented as an amateur filmmakers documentary about a pair of local tv hosts mysteriously dying in the woods. basic premise, but executed in a suprisingly realistic way that makes it feel like an actual amateur documentary. also has a twist that can either make or break for the film for you) -the evil dead trilogy (no introduction needed theyre fuckin classics, best ones are 2 and army of darkness but the first has the charm of being a low budget production and even makes usage of stop motion. lots of practical effects, lots of gore--although i do have to warn that theres unfortunately a rape scene in the first one. ALSO dont watch the 2013 remake its just torture porn and sam raimi had barely anything to do with it) -the thing (also no introduction needed and u mightve seen it already but i will take this moment to mention that i love the special effects in the movie) -pandorum (corny sci-fi horror thats essentially the descent in space with some similar concepts, has a killer performance by dennis quaid of all people and a norman reedus cameo. not the best film on this list but a personal favorite. i dont remember there being anything worth warning about, its just gory at times. the way the titular space sickness is presented is a little eyeroll-y and theres some echoes of fight club in there but overall its just kind of silly horror fun) also honorable mentions to movies that are sort of horror but kinda not: bram stoker’s dracula and shin godzilla

BOOKS I (RE)READ IN 2018: FURTHERMORE BY TAHEREH MAFI
"Alice Alexis Queensmeadow, 12, rates three things most important: Mother, who wouldn’t miss her; magic and color, which seem to elude her; and Father, who always loved her. Father disappeared from Ferenwood with only a ruler, almost three years ago. But she will have to travel through the mythical, dangerous land of Furthermore, where down can be up, paper is alive, and left can be both right and very, very wrong. Her only companion is Oliver whose own magic is based in lies and deceit. Alice must first find herself—and hold fast to the magic of love in the face of loss." "Red was ruby, green was fluorescent, yellow was simply incandescent. Color was life. Color was everything. Color, you see, was the universal sign of magic." "Love, it turned out, could both hurt and heal." "Narrow-mindedness will only get you as far as Nowhere, and once you're there, you're lost forever.” "Alice was an odd girl, even for Ferenwood, where the sun occasionally rained and the colors were brighter than usual and magic was as common as a frowning parent." "Making magic is far more interesting than making sense." So I actually read this book a few months ago and then recently reread it via audio so I could remember all the details for this review. I was first introduced to Tahereh Mafi’s work through her book Shatter Me, her debut novel. Ironically, it wasn’t through any of the ways I normally hear about books - Booktube, Goodreads, my best friend, Booklr - but from my husband’s aunt. She runs - or used to run, not sure if she’s still doing it - a book review blog. And she posted a review of Shatter Me and I was like, “What a weird, interesting writing style, lemme check this out.” At this point the entire Shatter Me Trilogy plus novellas had been published and I devoured all of them (still need to review those, too). So when I heard Tahereh Mafi was writing a middle grade book, I got super excited! Especially because this was during a time when I was too stressed out to read any YA, since most of the YA I like involves having to save the world and all the stress that entails. I need to lay out some trigger warnings real quick: the main character, Alice? Her mom is incredibly abusive, both emotionally and physically. It’s treated as not such a big deal in the book, which is honestly the story’s only real flaw, but it’s bad. It took me seven tries and resorting to an audiobook (and even with a fantastic narrator, that short audiobook took me almost a month to get through) because the abuse was so bad. So:
TRIGGER WARNING: THIS BOOK CONTAINS EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL ABUSE OF A CHILD BY THEIR PARENT
Let’s get started, yo! First of all, the setting. OMG. See, I love tthis thing called Victorian fairy tales, which is something you can find in books like Mary Poppins - these super fantastical bits of whimsy that just warm your heart and make you grin because they’re so creative and fun. In the Mary Poppins books, you can jump into chalk drawings and go to a circus amidst the stars and make friends with a woman who sells living candy-cane horses. In Catherynne Valente’s Fairyland series, there are shadow balls and talking phonographs. And in Furthermore, there’s light raining down from the sky in literal drops, sticks of magic you use like money, and forests full of invisible berries. The way the world is put together and described, so full of color and imagination, is awesome and beautiful and I could picture it perfectly. It reminded me in all the best ways of books like The Phantom Tollbooth (one of my favorites). But I wouldn’t want to live there, because Ferenwood is full of colorism and ick. Alice, the female lead, is an albino in a world where color is important and the darker you are, the more magical you’re considered to be. So Alice gets treated like garbage.
Also I think Alice may be autistic, but I don’t know if she’s deliberately coded autistic or if Tahereh Mafi did it by accident while trying to make Alice eccentric, but she comes across as autistic. I’ve actually begun to pay more attention to that sort of the thing in recent years, being autistic myself, and I see it a lot - authors giving their characters autistic characteristics, often without meaning to. I just touch on it here because Alice is already treated badly for being albino, but she’s also considered a freak because of the way she behaves - like an autistic preteen. And I wonder if Tahereh Mafi did that on purpose as a sort of commentary or not, because while Alice is treated badly by the people of Ferenwood for her behavior, the Narrator (who is an actual character in the story; love when that happens) always sides with Alice in this regard. The storyline is sweet and I love it. Alice tries to compete in the magical testing all the preteens do on their twelfth birthday, and so she dances. And her dancing is magical but it’s not Magical, you know? So she fails the test. Well, turns out a boy who passed the test the year before, Oliver (the brat), needs Alice’s help fulfilling a quest - rescuing Alice’s missing dad. So they go on a quest together, although Alice hates Oliver (and rightly so, he’s rude). They go to a dozen different and cool places, all of which are dangerous and all of which are different. I wish we could’ve spent more time in those places but I understand why we didn’t. The only annoying thing is there’s an origami fox on the cover but it only pops up in one of the worlds for like two pages and then it’s gone and I thought we could spend more time both in that world and with that creature since it ended up on the cover. But alas, not. I understand why - middle grade is often cursed to be short, especially if it’s the author’s first MG novel ever. Once you get big and bad like Rick Riordan you can start tossing out gihugic tomes like Son of Neptune or Blood of Olympus on the regular. Oliver’s reason for needing Alice was one I didn’t see coming, nor was her magical talent - a talent they hint at throughout the book but never explain until near the end, at the perfect moment. I thought it was an interesting commentary on how young girls perceive themselves, that Alice hates this marvelous, amazing talent she has of bringing color into the world from nothing...because she can’t use it to change how she looks. Society has trained her already, by the age of twelve, to discount something incredible about herself because she can’t use it to make herself into what society wants her to be. That’s pretty impressive for a book this short. I loved some of the more deliberate messages in the work - the thing I mentioned about society’s pressures on young girls, and also that it’s okay to tell boys to screw off if they’re mean to you, and to have hope and to look for second chances (Alice thinks she only has one chance to pass the test and believes her life is over when she fails, only to find out she can try again the next year). I love all of that, and the lyrical and whimsical quality of the prose, and the world building is so creative and also makes me a bit hungry (people eat magic in this book, among other things; I wonder what it tastes like). Now...let’s talk about the abuse. That’s my biggest issue with the book. Alice’s mother is a total bitch. And not in a cool, kickass way like the lady in the show Empire. She’s vicious, she’s cruel, and she’s abusive. Alice knows - and the Narrator confirms - that she turned bad when her husband went missing, and apparently the worry for him and the strain of raising four kids on her own is making her hard and sad, but I don’t give a shit. I was hoping Tahereh Mafi would’ve gone all Hansel and Gretel on this lady and when Alice comes home with her dad, the wife’s dead or something. She beats Alice (at one point she beat Alice for chasing a boy out of the place where she was sleeping, even though he kept staring at her in her sleeping clothes, because apparently the boy - Oliver - had the right to break into their barn at 3AM and ogle Alice???), she verbally abuses Alice, she sends her to bed regularly without dinner, is constantly criticizing, won’t hug her or kiss her, and - this one really got me, for some reason - forces her to do illegal things. Those invisible berries I mentioned? Alice can find them and bring back whole baskets because of her magical gift, and so her mom sends her out to pick them all the time. If she brings home enough, her mom smiles. If she doesn’t, her mom yells and calls her names and sometimes beats her. Guess what? Picking those berries is illegal. We don’t find this out until much later in the book, but it is. The thing I didn’t like about the berries is that Oliver, who’s thirteen, is less concerned about Alice’s mother beating her for not picking enough contraband berries and instead focuses on how her ability to find the berries in the first place means Alice has really impressive magic. NOBODY seems to care how much Alice is being abused, not even the Narrator. The Narrator sympathizes with Alice’s hurt feelings and despair over her missing Father, but it’s never objectively stated that her mom is abusing her AND SHE IS. Yeah, her mom is sooo glad to have her back after Alice almost dies on her trip with Oliver, but so what? My roommate’s mom is so abusive that my roommate’s clergy leaders, doctors, and psychological therapist all said my roommate needed to cut ties with said mom, even though my roommate’s mom has also exhibited the same kind of “oh baby I’m so sorry, I love you so much” bullshit. That’s what abusers do. So I hate Alice’s mom. She literally makes her daughter feel like if she doesn’t risk her life numerous times AND bring her father back, there is no chance her mother will ever love her. And if she pulls that stuff off (which she does), then MAYBE her mother will love her. Nuh-uh. Nope. Hate that bitch. Other than that, I really loved this book. The characters felt real (Alice is me, but without my anger), Even the ones I didn’t like were still REAL, and well-drawn. The world building and word choice is fantastic. Basically, if you can get past the evil mom, read this book. World Building: 1 star Realism: 1 star Word Choice: 1 star Plot: 1 star Characterization: 1 star - ¼ star because Oliver Newbanks is an obnoxious little creep - 1 star because the mom is AN ABUSIVE EVIL BITCH - ¼ star because NOBODY DOES ANYTHING ABOUT THAT +½ star because Alice is amazing and has a genius brain and I love her Total score: 4/5 stars Would I Buy It: Yes! I own it and loved it enough I got the sequel for Christmas (in...2017...I've been sitting on this review for months...)! Would I Recommend: yes, but with trigger warnings. Again, highly abusive evil bitch mom who somehow doesn’t die.

Saw a post on twitter talkin abt how reviews 4 detective pikachu keep saying it sucks cause u have to have knowledge of the pokemon franchise for it (which is stupid, but thats another can of worms) and comparing it to avengers endgame's 20 movie homework assignment - which isnt hyperbole. And i was thinking of all the folks who are like 'stop crying why dont you understand how sequels work'. And it got me musing on what marvel and disney have done here to basically guarantee that they not only garner huge profits from their new movies, but that they continue to garner huge profits on basically every mcu movie theyve made since 2008.
Like. MCU movies whether i like it or not are a huge part of being... social, basically. I dont give a shit about them, but i also have almost no friends and dont give a shit about communicating with people in a general sense. But every time a new marvel movie comes out, its fuckin all people talk about. It permeates everything. Ive seen the societal pressure to continue seeing these movies even if you dont care about them, *just* so you can be part of everyday conversation for a good few months. People RUN to see the movie as soon as humanly possible because people want to avoid spoilers so desperately they completely isolate themselves from the world. And, yeah, you can apply this to literally any movie in a popular franchise or any standalone heavy hitter - what sets mcu apart is that 20 movie homework assignment.
In looking up what movies are essential to watch before endgame, the absolute shortest list i could find was 8, and that was like, bare bones. Watching those 8 movies, if youre a newbie to the franchise, you still wouldnt know who the fuck most of the heroes popping up are or why the fuck theyre there. (I have general knowledge of marvel, but i never saw ant man, so even being marginally aware of the hero when i saw civil war and he popped up, i was like 'what the fuck, whyd they kidnap celebrity paul rudd?') In order to fully understand who everybody is, i'd say you have to watch at least the first movie of every individual hero's movie line. In order to have perspective on the inner workings of characters and what has happened to them so you can see where theyre coming from, youd have to watch *all* of it. Which, i mean, if people wanna do that, u do u booboo. Some people are in love with this shit. Some people wanna be able to, like, be part of greater society and talk to their friends. I get it. Youre not gonna be able to keep up with conversation as well if you dont know who a third of the characters even are. If your friends are big fans, you better be able to talk shop, too.
What im musing on is that, like, theres no way this wasnt fully intentional. Theres no way that disney and marvel arent aware of the social influence their franchise has, and no way they werent aware of how it would be from the beginning, just by watching social trends when huge movies come out. I mean, thats what your marketing team is there for, yknow. Its literally their job. The entire mcu line was carefully crafted to make sure youre not just giving money to their new movies, but to all their old movies, since its required watching and youll experience some level of social isolation if you dont. Yeah, other franchises have done this stuff too, having multiple sequals or breaking up their sequals into several parts to make more money. But - and i might be wrong, if theres another quite this huge, im just not remembering - not to the extent the mcu has. Not *20 fucking movies*, spanning several different storylines with their own sequels that are only intermingled juuuuust enough to be important. Imagine if all the disney princess movies were intermingled. Imagine if, in order to watch moana, you had to watch everything from, oh, little mermaid on, to understand whats going on.
And then, like the big bright maraschino cherry on top, if you complain about it being inaccessible, you get social backlash. Youre socially isolated and out of the popular loop if you dont see it, but if you take issue with everything you have to do just to get there, youre chastised by your peers. The only way to win is to give marvel lots of money, and thats entirely intentional on their part.
And yes, i know, ppl can pirate movies or read summaries. I am one of the ppl who basically live by doing that, so ofc i know. But i think we can all agree that reading summaries is absolutely not the same as seeing the movie first hand, leaves out a ton of details, and gives you none of the emotional impact of the situation, so youre still socially stunted - and theres absolutely a societal trend to some people to just experience the whole thing because it just feels right. Basically as a ritual. (See: people rewatching the LOTR trilogy before going to see the hobbit movies, just to hype themselves up and turn seeing the movie into a much bigger personal event, as ONE example among mmmaaannnyyy.) And pirating? Tons of folks are vehemently morally opposed to that. (I am not, but like, doesnt mean there aint a significant number of ppl who are.)
Its clever. And also kinda horrifying, in a 'capitalism is highly manipulative and insidious' kinda way.
Im 100% sure this musing is not new or groundbreaking in any way, shape, or form, and that tons of people have been well aware of it for ages. Its just interesting to think about.

ok heres my nintendo direct hopes and predictions (i typed this all out last night then forgot to post it whoops)
it’s possible they'll put edgelord from fire emblem treehouse in smash as a marketing move, and if so it would make sense to do that as close to the launch of the game as possible so she'd probably be the second or third fighter, but they don't have to even announce the next one just yet
i have nothing to say about the actual content of the new fe since i've only played awakening and part of echoes. that reminds me, i still need to finish echoes whoops. and play fates
as for the rumors about the next dlc fighter being some dude from dragon quest, ive always thought that would be a weird choice since i thought the most iconic and important character was a slime, but thats probably influenced by the fact that my only direct experience with those games comes from a spinoff focused on the monsters (which played similarly to pokemon, so thatd be like if they added red into ssb64 instead of pikachu or any other pokemon)
probably will talk about sheldon's picks and the upcoming splatoon 2 demo. unfortunately that's probably it for splatoon since theyve shifted development to ac switch
speaking of which, animal crossing might be in there, though probably not a lot if so otherwise they wouldve mentioned it instead of fire emblem because that would get more people hyped
yoshi's crafted world is likely going to be covered, at least a little bit, since it isn't out yet
also still hoping for some mk8d dlc (waluigi pinball, splatoon track, pauline, maybe octolings?)
we're likely going to actually see the joker in smash, as well as get a release date or at least a window
persona 5 on switch would be cool (there’s a rumor about that), i know almost nothing about persona and dont even know if i'd like the games but itd be nice to have the option to play it available
HOPEFULLY pmd5, and if we get any pokemon content it'll be spinoffs since tpci will announce gen viii on their own schedule (either on pokemon day like gen vii, or before that, or on game freak's 30th anniversary in april, or after, but probably early june at the latest)
boxboy on switch would be GREAT and if that's coming i hope they release the qbby amiibo over here (and/or restock it in japan), i didn't get into the series until well after the amiibo became impossible to find for a remotely reasonable price so i never got a chance to import it. i also am just getting to the end of the second game so now would of course be the time they’d announce it, when i’m not ready for it just yet
theyre maybe going to announce spyro finally, as i recall there have been several incidents of sites briefly listing a switch version
and we might see a hat in time idk. i still know very little about that game but ive heard it's good so i'll be paying attention
theres a recent rumor about dangan ronpa coming to switch (as the three main games together in a trilogy) and it would be amazing to finally get to play it after 6yrs of just watching other people play it. never got around to watching a playthrough of ndrv3, partly because i wanted to wait a little on the off chance it came to switch (and “a little” quickly turned into 2 years wow). this way, i’d be going into one of the games blind instead of knowing everything from the start like i do for dr and sdr2
rumors say metroid prime trilogy is coming, which would be slightly annoying for me since i got it on wii u and never got too far into it but that was only $10 so it's not a big waste of money and being able to play on the go would be nice
potentially some 3ds content despite the fact they only mention switch (they specifically stated that mobile would not be included, but didn't say anything about 3ds)
and of course my perpetual wishlist:
localize the dragon quest monsters 2 remake (it has now been FIVE years and theyve gotta do it before the 3ds dies so they need to hurry)
gamecube "virtual console" (i know it won't be called vc that's why i have to use quotes now)
mother 3
