I wanted to bring this up again because I think that Ian Cardoni has really evolved into his role as the new voice actor for Rick. It’s really hard to believe that Cardoni has only had this job for about month or two but is already playing this character like he’s been there since the beginning. It didn’t once cross my mind during this episode that I was not listening to Justin Roiland anymore. Harry Belden’s Morty sounds like a nice blend of Roiland’s Season 1 and Season 6 performance of that character.

Freaky Friday:

I appreciate that they didn’t do a clean body-swap but gave RickBody and JerryBody an amalgamation of the two minds in conflict with each other, but then evolving over the course of the episode into someones (or something) with its own identity.

Chuxly:

I kinda have a soft spot for Chuxly. He’s just a mid-tier criminal who’s trying not to cause any unnecessary trouble. He doesn’t need any incompetent goons kidnapping the precious grandson of the most dangerous man in the universe and he’ll kiss as much ass as he can until his lips are ass-colored.

The Stupid Rake Gag:

This joke is older than God herself and in hindsight I should have seen this coming. The inciting incident was due to Gene stealing a rake. It was all laid out for this to happen but it was so cleverly concealed until it happened that I was absolutely taken off-guard. God I love that Jerry and Rick were rescued from their monstrous Jerricky form by a corny rake gag.

Rick and Jerry care about each other. They really do!

Though they’ll never admit it.

Memory Rick!

He’s alive and well and kept Rick and Jerry from completely losing their minds to Jerricky. Sadly, he might be stuck in Jerry’s mind for awhile unless he can make use of springs and gears and only springs and gears. I imagine there’s going be an episode in the future about his escape.

My Not Favs:

Jerricky:

He will haunt my dreams until my dying breath in which he will then greet me at the gates of Hell where he will orchestrate my torture for all eternity and a day. Personally, I wasn’t a huge fan of Jerricky and the final fight with him and why did they give it a six-pack? Neither Jerry or Rick have a six-pack. Who do they think they’re fooling?

Rick’s mind was a bit overpowering:

Maybe this is because Rick is a character with such a big personality but I felt like the aspects that could be Jerry was a bit drowned out. RickBody and JerryBody acted mostly like Rick with sprinkles of Jerry rather than an even mix of the two.

A criminal lack of Morty:

Morty (or should I say, Rick Jr.) maybe turning into a little criminal but I would like to have some more screen time with him. There’re eight more episodes left so I’m not too worried about this but I think Morty is a little underutilized for a character who has some great story potential (and his name is in the title of the show). However, I’m glad we got to see more of him compared to the last episode. He is getting so confident and not waiting around for his grandpa/dad and dad/grandpa to get himself out of trouble.

My Thoughts:

I love myself a Rick and Jerry team-up episode and this episode was no different. Rick and Jerry may never admit it, but they are more alike than different and their minds meld well together ( as long as they don’t make a Jerricky). The Rick/Jerry dynamic has always been rife with conflict since the first episode when Jerry tried to convince Beth to put Rick in a nursing home because Rick pulled Morty out of school, repeatedly, behind their backs. In a sweet moment in the middle of the episode we hear them admit that Rick doesn’t believe Jerry is useless and that Jerry sees Rick as a friend. By the end of the episode, they are back to bickering at each other again but we know as an audience that it comes from a place of love for each other and their love for Summer, Morty and Daughterwife. This episode, in my mind, was much stronger than last week’s and oh so weird in the best possible way, except for maybe Jerricky. Jerricky was the weakest part of the episode with the fight scene being a bit lackluster for an otherwise bonkers episode. Though that rake gag killed me. They really did just sneak that in and thought I wouldn’t notice, which I didn’t so good job on their part. It absolutely felt like a classic Rick and Morty episode and I hope each episode continues getting better and better. Also, it was nice seeing Memory Rick again and,

“Yeah, Memory Rick, Rick totally got rid of you on purpose.”

UK superstar hands local band its biggest gig yet

After taking over venues everywhere from Katoomba to Canberra, local band Club Halifax is about to hit their biggest stage yet, opening for internationally renowned singer-songwriter Louis Tomlinson at Qudos Bank Arena.

Club Halifax initially came together in 2021, when existing bandmates Bree Greasley, Cameron Browning and Cameron Hopcroft joined forces with new members Robert Jinks and Ethan Karpathy to create a brand new sound.

Over the last few years, the group has performed all over New South Wales and interstate whilst working collaboratively to write and release two singles, with Karpathy admitting that Glenmore Park local Hopcroft, whose home they record at, is always the “secret ingredient” in their music.

“I like a lot of heavier music, a lot of the other guys like a lot of the folkier stuff, so you blend that all together, and then our sprinkle on top is always Hop – whenever Hop brings his lead lines on, that’s when it goes from a song, to a Club Halifax song,” he said.

Everything changed for the band last year when a targeted advertisement came up on Karpathy’s Instagram looking for a local act to support the former One Direction member at his Sydney show on Friday, February 2.

Despite saying he ignored the advertisement at first, thinking the band had no chance at the spot, Karpathy ended up applying the next day with a short blurb and video of them playing at the Blue Mountains Theatre.

You can only imagine their shock upon opening an email from Tomlinson’s team just a few weeks ago naming Club Halifax as the official opener.

“[Browning] and I yessed it before we got everyone else saying ‘yes’ – we just knew it had to be done,” Karpathy said.

Club Halifax is one of three Australian bands opening for Tomlinson over the span of his tour, with The Velvet Club performing in Melbourne, and Safety Hazard in Brisbane – each local to their respective shows.

According to Greasley, artists like Tomlinson providing opportunities like these for smaller bands is an integral part of the industry locally, showcasing that there’s no shortage of musical talent in Australia.

“I think it’s awesome, because all of these smaller bands are getting so much momentum out of it, and hopefully opportunities out of it as well,” she said.

With the countdown now officially on, the band said they’re all dealing with mixed emotions, struggling to focus on day-to-day life without being reminded of the gig.

“I think we’re all feeling terrified, but excited,” Hopcroft said.

Ultimately, however, Jinks noted that they can’t wait to soak it all up, especially given they’ll be surrounded by loved ones who have bought tickets to support them.

“For a western Sydney band, this is a huge opportunity. I don’t think any of us saw this coming, and definitely not this quick. It’s the dream, but it doesn’t happen often,” Jinks said.

“I’m pretty excited that we’re going to have all of our friends and family in the audience. I think that’s going to be the only comforting thing in the whole gig – looking out and seeing mum. But also, brushing shoulders with pop royalty Louis Tomlinson is super exciting.”

As for what’s next for Club Halifax, Browning assured that there’s plenty more in the pipeline for 2024.

“There’s at least one EP, potentially two, in the works, and then other stuff beyond that, like merch and more gigs,” Browning said.

"Sure about this? Ain't gonna be much."

Cross-legged in the dust, Katja spun a mortar slowly in her hand as she looked up at the group of children huddled before her. One of the four nodded crisply, hands folded across his scrawny chest as he returned the woman's placid regard with a stern one. Most likely some sort of behavior that he picked up from someone around the camp.

"We're sure! Tit for tat, innit?"

Though the Highlander was not quite sure about the exchange, it was of no consequence. So long as they upheld their side of the bargain then there was nothing for her to complain about. Setting the mortar on the ground beside her with a muffled thump, she looked toward the rest of the materials the village children had gathered for her. Turns prior the bounty would have been a rare treat, but she still recalled those occasions when her father came across them.

He had always began the same way, daughter following along that vivid memory. A sharp knife drawn and carefully cleaned, before slicing open the bright orange pepper that had been gathered. Seeds neatly flicked clear, before chopping it into neat little pieces. Far more uniform than Katja's own, but the eager group hardly noticed. An onion followed suit, peeled with a few flicks of that knife and white flesh diced just as roughly.

It always made her eyes water, whether by trick or simply more keen knifework she never recalled his own turning red.

Limited as her culinary skills might be, the acrobat knew enough to test just what sort of cooking oil was presented before splashing it into the cast iron pan smoking over hot coals. Lindi and her would watch until it shimmered, only for a short call of 'Time!' before their dad dropped the vegetables in to sizzle.

She chose to work silently, even as the children murmured excitedly between each other. Lean times made something so mundane a treasure. She knew that well.

Leaving it to dance with little pops of oil, Katja plucked up ruby-red tomatoes one by one, peeling them carefully to drop into an empty bowl in her lap. Cutting as she remembered to keep them intact as possible. Skins discarded with a flick of the hand over to where eager chickens scuttled over to peck eagerly. Mom never bothered with that first step, simply crushing the fruit between thick fingers to squeeze the pulverized innards out into the pan directly. The acrobat's hands were not quite so large as to manage that. So instead the meat was separated, before crushing it to a juicy mess with a wooden spoon. At least it kept her cleaner.

One prepared, it went right into the pan, a sudden hiss of steam where it touched the hot oil only to settle to a more sedate simmer by the time the last of it was shaken out with the rap of the side of her knife against the bottom of the bowl. The next step she remembered well. Arguing with her sister over who would grind the spices, until they begrudgingly agreed to take turns as they always would. Wasted effort when both knew the end decision would be the same every time.

This time there was no argument, as the performer added cloves of garlic to the mortar, before grinding it down to a thick paste with steady, even presses of the pestle. Strong and sharp, the scent of it was unmistakable. Much like the sweet aroma of the dried paprika she added next, slicing off the stems before turning the pulverized garlic a reddish hue as it was slowly crushed. A pause as more spice was added - just a touch of chili and cumin seeds before the final mixture was scraped out with a wooden spoon to blend with the smell of cooking vegetable. Almost belatedly, a healthy dash of salt and pepper.

Setting aside the emptied vessel, she shut her eyes for a moment. Sifting through memory of those times, doing her best to separate the mechanical process from the sights and sounds that came with them. Stirring occasionally to keep restless fingers occupied. Those final touches, coriander leaves torn by hand and sprinkled on top, as well as a generous touch of parsley. Opening her eyes once more, she added them to the dish.

"Izzit ready?" A girl with marmot-brown hair leaned closer, eyes fixated on that bubbling pan.

"No."

Four of them. If they ate as heartily as her mother and brother, then it would not be enough. But few did. All the same, she pressed the wooden ladle down into the bubbling stew, forming eight wells before cracking an egg to plop down into each one. Watching closely as translucent whites stiffened and colored, until only the pristine yellows of the yolk still wobbled enticingly.

Finally, Katja lifted it from the coals by the handle, resting it on a wooden platter before her. Scooping out a pair of eggs for each of the children, the Gyr Abanian served out their bowls, before setting a large pide between each pair of them. The sight of it brought back memories, even if it were not quite so pretty as what their father used to serve. But most things did. That familiar smell did nothing for her own appetite.

The children's fared far better.

"Not gonna eat with us?"

"Not hungry." Leaning forward, the woman rested elbows on her knees, fixing the leader of the group with that disarmingly calm gaze, "The three-eyed man."

The boy gestured with his rough-carved spoon off toward a nearby mesa, the sides of it almost flickering in the heat. Waves of color rippling along the sides of it, "Camps up there or sumpin', shoot ya if ya get near! Got lots of metal bits strung out to catch ya if yer creepin' up the switchback! Steals beasts when we ain't lookin'. Stole our kin afore 'at…"

That comment brought a pause to the sound of enthusiastic eating. Only for a moment, as hunger won out and wooden spoons scraped against bowls once again.

"Bloke ain't changed then." Cleaning her knife, Katja slid it into the sheath at her side before rising to her feet in one, smooth motion.

An even trade so far as she was concerned. The kids could clean up the dishes. She would handle their unwanted squatter.

The Carebear: Everywhere At The Beginning Of Nowhere

After 9 hours and taking a day to mull over the Carebear, i'm finally gonna post my thoughts about it.

im going to say, for the sake of my own views of it, im going for a 6/10.

To give some backstory here, the Caretaker and the Carebear both are albums built to simulate the final thoughts of their respective characters. their names being, of course, the Caretaker and the Carebear. The Caretaker, created by Leyland James Kirby, was made using 1920-1930s ballroom music. Most importantly, almost all the songs (except for the titular It's Just a Burning Memory) are copyright-less. meaning, the ballroom music that was recorded and played is quite literally forgotten; perhaps not by the people who made it, but by the people that profited off of it back in the day. In the modern age of everything being copyrighted, it's a somber reminder that shit can just be forgotten, the creators left unknown, and the musicians that performed it are left as ever anonymous faces.

now im gonna stop yelling about the caretaker and just actually review the carebear. The Carebear takes these things and follows mostly accordingly. Using the same genre of music, similar themes, and similar stages. However, the carebear adds 1 extra stage (totalling 7) and an extra 3 hours of runtime. Is this length worth it?

The most important part of the carebear to me is that it takes a much more artistic and contrasting approach to the subject matter of the carebear slowly losing her memories. the caretaker lost his through a slow descent into nothingness; ending in an angelic choir that signified his dignified, respectful death. The best way i can describe it is that the story of the caretaker is the most realistic, with no bells or whistles attached.

The carebear takes these bells and whistles and sprinkles them in wonderfully.

The first four stages take up the usual lull that the caretaker exemplifies. while the carebear does well to mimic the original style, it only mimics it, it doesnt do much to actually make it stand out. and considering thats our first 3 hours of runtime, that isnt a good sign. However, stage 5 is when things get both good and bad in different ways.

to describe it as simply as possible, the carebear, unlike the caretaker, has an extremely short song titled simply as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Compared to other songs in the album that sandwich it that are at least 30 minutes, this song is only 3 minutes, seamlessly blended into the ending of the previous Stage 5 Post Awareness Confusions. The constrast between the droning sounds of the rest of stage 5 and the absolute chaos of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder just. is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. it's even stronger when the song after it is made just so deafeningly quiet. Nothing can compare to the fear that the carebear felt that day, or that week, or those years, however long she felt it.

Then of course there is this version's Temporary Bliss State. And I'm REALLY disappointed in the Carebear for this one; the caretaker's version gnuinely makes you feel blissful. it is a reprieve from the chaos of stage 4, probably one of the most terrifying parts of the origincal caretaker, but now that TBS has been relegated to stage 5, where things are much more droning, the carebear's TBS is neither blissful, whimsical, or anything. it just ends up pretty damn boring all things considered, especially compared to the fact that 2 songs earlier was PTSD.

Stage 6 goes by with nothing interesting. over another entire hour of droning music. Obviously you COULD argue that "but flim, doesnt EATEOT ALSO have a bunch of droning music?" and i would say YES. however, the caretaker's entire album is 6 hours, with stage 5 and 6 taking up 2 and a half hours of runtime. Not only is it comparatively shorter, but it also is exascerbated by the earlier contrast. there are higher highs and lower lows in the carebear than the caretaker; whichever you prefer, a smoother ride or a more bumpier ride, is up to you.

And finally. Stage 7.

The most BEAUTIFUL, and i really mean BEAUTIFUL part of the entire album. literally gave me chills. Something Reawakens Before the Curtains Close. Genuinely i really recommend listening to the whole song if you ever get the time to, its about half an hour, but its just so good. If you dont care about 9 hour albums or 6 hour albums about dementia and weird sounds and my own insane rambling, ATLEAST give Something Reawakens Before the Curtains Close a watch. The rest of this is gonna spoil what it is, so if you wanna hear it for yourself just skip this next paragraph.

The heart monitor is cheesy, yeah. taking an old song about love called It's Been a Long, Long Time and putting it in with clips of old 1940's nostalgia is cheesy, sure. making it crescendo as the carebear takes her final breaths is cheesy. i know. but god. this shit hits so fucking hard. after over 7 and a half hours of slowly descending into nothingness, i didnt want this shit to end ever. the carebear, for all her struggles, has lived a good life, and she deserves to see those final moments play out in utter nostalgic bliss. after all the struggles of when she was young with PTSD, with dementia, with losing everything she knew, she finally had a moment to remember everything. god shit is moving me to tears bro. pic related

Anyway, then comes the post mortem section. its kinda bad tbh, didnt really need it especially since the previous part hit SO HARD. its also an hour long and just doesn't really matter all too much.

AND SO, UH. THAT'S MY REVIEW. tune in next time after i finish the 6 and a half hour The Caretakers - Nowhere At The Millenium Of Space, which takes the original idea of EATEOT and takes it to a groovy 60s to 80s vibe instead.

She’s 5’4’’, of Asian descent, and dresses in well tailored but not flashy clothing, usually a skirt suit and low heels. Her black hair is cut short just below the ears and she has dark eyes. When she speaks, it’s quiet, with just a hint of a southern accent sprinkled in at times. The one thing that draws people to her is this aura of calmness that cannot really be explained- only that when you’re in Belle’s presence, you can’t help but feel at ease.

Personality: Belle is a quiet woman, well mannered and well spoken. She’s not known for raising her voice, but she doesn’t mince words- when there’s an issue, she will be (sometimes brutally) honest. She’s not an incredibly social person, preferring her own company, and keeps most people at arm’s length. Although she’s not a cruel person, she doesn’t trust anyone to have her back- she hopes you won’t take that the wrong way.

Background: Belle’s earliest memories are of white tents and loud sermons screaming of hellfire and healing, of damnation to sinners and redemption only through strict following of the good book. She was adopted as a small toddler by Pastor Earl Kindly and his wife, Mrs. Summer Kindly. Every summer they’d go on the road to preach and offer healing to the sick and disabled. Not that anything really happened, just a lot of chanting and laying of hands, but Belle knew her part- bow your head during prayer, sing along to the hymns, don’t fall asleep in the front pew, and don’t speak until spoken to. Be a good girl, and you won’t get spanked.

It was when she was seven when she first heard the voice. It was when her father was calling on the lord to heal this woman in front of them, a woman who’d lost her sight several years before. The voice told her to go forward and lay her hands on the woman’s face, that she’d be able to do what her father couldn’t do. Belle pushed her way through the crowd and did as the voice on high said and the woman opened her eyes and was healed.

The reaction was instantaneous- Mary-Belle Kindly had performed a miracle. This sweet child could lay hands and bring health to the ones needed. Granted, for several days after, Belle was blinking spots out of her eyes but she didn’t make a fuss over it. After all, her father seemed really proud of her for the first time. So when her father told her to heal someone, she did it, no matter the cost on her body. Limping, ringing ears, just general aches and pains were accepted as small costs for the pride her father had in her. The voice didn’t tell her to heal any of the people her father told her to, but her father bought her all sorts of nice things- new dresses, toys, even a puppy. Somehow her new gift had brought a lot of good into their life, and Belle wasn’t going to kick up a fuss.

Then came the stranger when she was ten. He claimed he was unable to walk and had come for healing, and before the meeting he’d handed Belle’s father an envelope stuffed with money.

It was the first time the voice had spoken to her in years. The voice told her to stay away from that man. Do not even get close. So Belle refused to heal him and instead went to the next person in line. Her father waited until after the meeting before he got the switch out. He screamed at her and told her the next time that man showed up she would heal him.

Belle held out as long as she could. She lost all her new toys, her dog was given away, but she refused to heal that man.

Finally her father grabbed her by the ear and dragged her towards the disabled man, telling her if she didn’t heal him she’d never be allowed out of her room again. Belle looked up and saw the man’s eyes glow red… and instead of raising her hand to heal, she rose it to smite.

Officially the story was that the tent pole broke and injured some of the congregation. The witnesses clammed up with a little bribery, but they could hardly forget the little girl that raised her hand and a white light that shown from it… then the ‘paralyzed’ man had leaped to his feet and scrambled back, hissing and cursing the ‘little angel blood bitch’ before he turned into ash.

Belle’s parents took her home, and after that enrolled her in a boarding school far, far away. She graduated at the top of her class, and then she dug into her adoption records. It turned out her adoption was far from legal- plenty of money passed hands and there was no record about where Belle had come from. When Belle asked her adoptive parents for any help in finding her birth family, they refused… so Belle walked out of their lives and hasn’t spoken to them since.

The Voice on high spoke to her again, and she was given her mission- protect the weak, repel evil, and go forth without fear.
