you always say you broke your hips when you were younger, what happened? hope this isn't rude, just curious

nah, it's not rude at all. I know it's quite unusual for someone to say they broke their hips at age 13. being curious about stuff isn't rude.

technically, it wasn't necessarily a break, but that's how my doctors described it at the time. I had an acute slipped femoral epiphysis. essentially, your hip is a ball and socket joint, and in that joint, there's an epiphysis. the epiphysis can slip on its own, but mine happened because of an accident. mine was quite severe, and it was made worse by the fact my mum wouldn't believe there was anything wrong with me and made me walk around for 2 weeks on it, so when I finally got to the hospital, my body had already tried to repair the problem by growing tendon and muscle and tissue into the area. slipped epiphysis can be mild, moderate and severe, and mine was severe, which meant the femur had all but slipped out of the joint. it wasn't like a dislocation, but the epiphysis had become detached. here:

the reason I call it a break is because of how severe it was, it was essentially broken. here's an x Ray of one so you can get an idea of how painful it can be, because it changes your entire gait. obviously if you walk around on a limb so unaligned it will cause further pain, and I was going to school and doing PE lessons. it really fucked up the joint.

so this required surgery to correct. the surgery is when they stabilise the upper femoral epiphysis and therefore the femur itself using screws and pins. as mine was so nasty, it took a long surgery to remove the tissue and then pin it into place.

heres an xray of someone else's surgery that looks pretty similar to mine:

I broke my left one first. funnily enough, despite the complications, it actually healed really well and only causes me minor problems. I was on crutches for this for 6 months whilst it healed. then after I got off crutches, about 5 weeks later, I slipped and shattered my ankle. because of how nasty that break was, I was on crutches for 2 months. now because of the intense pressure put on my right hip, I started feeling a great deal of pain and brought it up to my doctor when I went for a check up to make sure my left hip had healed well. they said that I could have problems with my right hip and sent me in for an x ray and sure enough, that hip had actually started to actually break. that epiphysis had slipped too, not acutely like the first one but over time, and because of the pressure constantly being exerted onto that hip for nearly a year, the area around had started to show tiny cracks in both the femur and the pelvis. so I was booked in for another surgery, I was 14 at this point.

they kinda botched this one though. I had some surgical complications and lost all reflexes in that leg. I remember them doing physiotherapy afterwards and whacking my knee with a hammer and I had no reflexes whatsoever. I have mild reflexes now but its still significantly dulled.

I don't know if they pinched the sciatic nerve or something but I developed sciatica afterwards, the wound kept bleeding much longer than it was supposed to and my gait was significantly affected by the surgery, I still don't walk right and i don't think ever will. I can also feel the head of the screws if I press into my skin. im pretty sure they had to put a plate into the right hip too.

the funniest thing was though was that I was actually pretty short and the doctors said that my growth plate was likely affected and I probably won't grow much more. about a year later I had a massive growth spurt and ended up being one of the tallest in my class, so I always thought that was funny.

slipped upper femoral epiphysis are quite common, I think theyre more common in boys than girls, but they rarely get this severe. naturally I had to be the awkward dickhead case. if you or your kid starts complaining of pain in the hip and appears to have a changed gait, if they move their leg a bit awkwardly, if they complain of stiffness in the knee, and if their foot flops outwards instead of resting straight up, go to a doctor. most cases aren't acute like mine but develop over a period of time. you can live a normal life afterwards but if you leave it too long the complications can be genuinely disabling. I developed arthritis too.

i am so glad you asked!

see literally everything about sclep (incl. his valentines which is creating a 24-hr panacea). his goal, as expected and stated, is to try and cure anything that can be cured. the answer is exactly what you'd expect. this part does not interest me to go into.

i am now going to answer a completely different question, the real reason im glad you asked.

here are some people (both incidentally located @/bonmotx) who have chronic issues: asvatthaman (this is also canon if we're to take his state in lb4 as standard for him now) and sophia

sclep is full-on obsessed with both of these individuals, which manifests in different ways depending on how they react to him. Sophia, he is a sort of friendly-antagonistic with. She dislikes doctors and (correctly) calls him a shitty doctor for his disregarding of informed consent, and he wants to headlock her in return. however, she is also the subject of asclepius's ongoing research into surgical techniques for magic circuits, and does so willingly. he gives her extra attention and is very mindful of her health, but is also dismissive of her personality/emotionally.

asvatthaman, asclepius is fascinated with the idea of the curse that is interwoven with his spirit origin, and wants to find a way to cure i.e. remove it, which is directly related to your question of chronic pain. asvatthaman is in such and asclepius is very, very determined to create some method to solve it. usually, asclepius is opposed to methods that rely too heavily on magic (whenever he's not curing something that's an emergency) because he wants his techniques to be reproducable by future human doctors reading his notes, but for asvatthaman he's more fine with magic. since ash is a servant, magical treatment is to be expected.

may's asvatthaman also likes asclepius and treats him respectfully, which unlocks the way to be friends with asclepius, which is a multi step process 1. have something potentially curable and mysterious/new/complex wrong with you that sclep will become obsessed with 2. just kinda let him do whatever his bullshit is and be generally nice enough to him, i.e. show that you trust him as a doctor to not harm you, something he sees as "if my patients keep asking questions, its because they doubt that i'm capable" 3. just kinda keep hanging around 4. you are now friends with asclepius. he will not tell you aloud and it's sort of a thing that just happens where he slowly gets nicer to you until there's a little DING and you have bond 5 with him. at no point will he say "you're my friend"

if you get to being Good Friends with asclepius he will go out of his way above and beyond to ensure you Do Not Die. may's asvatthaman is furiously, determinedly, banned from dying. asclepius would actively put himself in danger to ensure the survival of his Favourite Patients. technically he would enter the battlefield for anyone whose survival he's entrusted with (as of now, he sees this as most of chaldea), but for his Favourites he goes extremely fixated with this.

ritsu, incidentally does have a chronic condition in asclepius's eyes (condition: stupidity, metaphorical cancer. symptoms: there's a fucking clown(s?) in their bones), but ritsu refuses both sclep's treatment (cutting off beast from ritsu's body and prana) and sclep's opinion that they have a problem (beast and/or douman, in their bones), which means ritsu is 1. a very interesting subject because theyre undying and prone to weird hijink injuries 2. a host to The Thing Asclepius Hates The Absolute Most, Aside From Half The Greek Gods: ashiya douman. their relationship is benign, but competitive and harmlessly antagonistic. ritsu met the first criteria to be sclep's friend, but did not meet the "consents to treatment" criteria.

BACK AT THE PALACE!!!!!!!!! valdemar feels like something is...off. they usually ask you to wait for them or have you in their office at this time of night so they could convince you to come back to their estate with them. however they let you go today considering they had a new person to dissect. they're like guts deep in when all the sudden. something just feels off to their demonic senses. a demon can taste their mate, can feel their mate's presence usually at all times. and all the sudden they don't "feel" you. they stop, arms inside the body, as the feeling takes control and they feel this rush of protectiveness overwhelm them like never before. (you two had just started dating.) and so they just put a scalpel and a pair of scissors in their pocket, leaving the dungeon with blood splattered across their uniform and on their gloves.

when they get to your shop, they immediately sense something is off, and do something they never do— rush. they rush in, frantically checking every corner, their genius mind going a hundred miles a minute until suddenly their eyes rest on the note on the display case. their eyes scan it carefully, take in each and every letter. their eyes glow a bright red in the darkness of the night, in the darkness of your house, in the darkness they feel pressing up against them.

and for once in their life, the heart they swore they didn't have was beating so fast they were sure if they were a human it would have ruptured. my mate, they think, MY mate. they swear on every god there is that the person responsible for this, who they are almost positive they know, will be tortured in the most excruciating manners possible before valdemar ends their life personally.

they immediately take to the streets, their form sometimes flash in between their disguise and their true form. many people are murdered — and it's all for you. they shall bring death and destruction to everything if that disgusting creature touched a single hair on your head.

finally, they reach the building you're being held in. they don't even have to strategize, their mad mind having come up for over 300 different ways that this would end, all with the person responsible dying and you being safely returned to their arms. they would make sure of it.

they kick open the door, their quiet footsteps ringing in the otherwise empty hallways of the seemingly abandoned house. theyre drinking in every detail, and when they breathe in the air they can smell you. they immediately pick up their pace, not wasting a moment's time when the barge into the room.

you're strapped to a vivisection table, and there's a male doctor towering over you, scalpel making indents and tearing your skin mindlessly, as if the doctor himself just wanted to watch you bleed. valdemar feels boiling rage enter their body more than it ever has. both heads snap up and turn towards valdemar. they can see the tears falling down your face, most likely to the horrors the male doctor subjected you to. the man in question pulls down his surgical mask, and smiles lowly at the head physician.

"ah, i must admit i wasn't expecting you to care enough to come save them," the doctor says. "when i heard you had a lover, i was positive there was no way. that you could feel love. and yet, here you are. come to see the show?" and with that, the doctor stabs down violently, burying the tool in your stomach. your scream rings in valdemar's ears, and before their vision distorts and goes completely black.

what they do remember, however, when they come back, is that the only trace left of the man left is one bone lingering on the ground. they immediately turn to you, their mind racing too fast and filled with too many thoughts. they needed to think, and think fast. your life was on the line.

they immediately get to work, stopping the bleeding and skillfully removing the other doctors scalpel from your stomach. you're incredibly wake and pale, and were finding it hard to stay awake with how much pain you were in.

"valdemar," you choke out, tears rushing down the corners of your eyes onto the table below you. you don't move as their hands skillfully work your body. "i think i'm gonna die." even though they didn't look you in the eye you knew they were listening.

"no." is the only word that comes out their mouth. "not under me."

your lips are quivering as you try to stay still. "val," you say softly. "i think it's over. i think i'm dying."

"you're not," they say, more forcefully this time.

"but i feel like i am," you argue, the tears still coming down helplessly. you finally gather enough to grab onto their gloves forearm, distracting them from their work for a moment. you feel their gaze trail up your arm to your eyes. those red eyes you loved so much. "let me go, valdemar. just...let me go."

they grip your hand more tightly than they ever have before. "no," they insist. "never! i refuse to 'let you go.' now be quiet as i finish healing you."

however, their words have an undertone to them. one you've never heard before. one no one had heard before. it was tinged with something akin to fear, yet their words were so reverent.

"please," you plead. you refuse to look down, but you can feel blood pouring out of you freely. you can feel the end approaching. "please, valdemar, just let me tell you i love you one last time—"

"no!" they suddenly snap. their hands press on the wound with a renewed fever, but you can feel them trembling against your body that was giving out. "this is not the end. there is no reason to say anything one last time. you're going to be fine."

you paw at the air, trying to feel them, any part of them, knowing your short life was coming to an end. "valdemar, you are the most extraordinary person i've ever met. i love you. i love you. i," your throat is closing up.

suddenly, you feel them removing their hands from your stomach and frantically pressing it to your pulse point on either side of your jaw, cupping your face with their long fingers. "you are not going to die on me," they suddenly say, their voice shaking.

you stare up at them, their face getting blurry around the edges. you hear them swear, something they rarely did. "(y/n), do not close your eyes. do not! i simply refuse to accept this...!"

you muster breath, and when you do, you try your best to smile. "i love you," you repeat. they had never said it back before, and you doubt they will. you never doubted that they did love you— it's just they weren't the type of person to confess such things.

"i love you," valdemar finally gasps, as if they're the one dying. "i love you, you stupid mortal, so you cannot die."

you want to scream, want to cry and cheer and hug them, but you cannot. you feel your own blood soaking the lower half of your body. "you-you do?" you ask, teeth chattering in the effort it took.

they grasp your hand and pull it up to their face, trapping it there with both of their arms on either side and they kiss your palm. their touch is cool.

"i have waited for you for a thousand years," they confess. "i have always known one day you would come. so you cannot leave. you cannot go somewhere i cannot go. i love you."

you close your eyes, and open them again in hopes of this all being a bad dream. their skin was starting to feel progressively warmer than yours, which was saying something, as they ran colder than you. "that's all i've ever wanted to hear," you breathe.

"i'll say it again, and again, when you're safe and alive in my arms."

you smile at them, your arm suddenly feeling very heavy even with theirs supporting yours. you're overcome with a sudden sense of sleep, and you muster one last time, "i love you so much."

and like that, you're gone.

was missing a bunch of vaccinations from late childhood so cioccolata got me up to date on them

just sort of a memory of standing in the bathroom with my leg propped up on the edge of the sink so cioccolata could give me some sort of shot in my thigh (hrt???? idk, knowing us it couldve been some sort of local anesthetic or something) and after the actual injection he just fuckin...... patted my leg and left the room??????????

i needed my wisdom teeth out, like so bad i was struggling to eat and wouldnt let cioccolata touch my face because of the pain. think i tried to fight him when he was trying to check things out. dont remember much about the actual removal other than him basically having to bribe me into it and it had to happen asap. i think it was somebody who specialized in oral surgery, one of cioccolata's work associates rather than him doing it himself i think??? do remember coming to after it and cio was petting my head and said something like "isnt that better? that wasn't so hard, was it?" but like i couldnt really answer because i a) couldnt feel my mouth on all the painkillers/anaesthetic and b) my mouth was full of gauze. a bit into the healing process when i could finally not have a mouth filled with cotton balls and blood, he got weirdly gushy/excited about being able to look in my mouth and see the stitches

me and cioccolata were doing our thing, you know, snuff films and such and i asked the guy we're busy cutting open something. i wasnt really expecting him to say anything but cioccolata got kind of annoyed at the dude for "being rude" and not answering me

i dont have oasis on so its either before i got my stand or ive just dispelled it for whatever reason (probably by request if thats the case). its very possible im not wearing anything/just wearing underwear??? again not sure why but i know im inside the house, though i cant quite tell if its the bathroom (specifically the tub), the lab (on the surgical table), or the bedroom (either on the bed or sitting at a vanity) anyway- so cioccolata's standing sort of behind me diagonally so hes like just out of my peripheral vision but hes still close enough to be well in arms reach, like directly over my shoulder and im just sort of pliable for the time being (just chillin, not making any sort of movement on my own unless he asks me to demonstrate something) so hes just going through motions pointing and tracing/touching and moving parts of my body and talking about nerve endings and stuff and i dont really retain much of it if im honest with you, it just sounds like pleasant babble and he moves from my arms to talking about the spine and gets up to that soft spot where the vertebra connects to the skull and instead of the just normal steady pressure hes been applying to all the other joints and stuff he sort of absentmindedly rubs circles around it with his middle and ring finger while he talked a bit about the spinal column/brainstem and what all it controls and stuff before he mentioned how the brainstem is one of the human body's "off switches" then just sort of chuckled a little bit and patted my head

*claps hands together* all right heres a play by play of how my top surgery went for the first 24 hours (I had double incision top surgery with nipple reconstruction)

- got to the hospital early (like 9:30) and checked in

- didnt wait too long before they took me to a curtained room for preop

- there they went over: consent (signed a bunch of stuff), put an iv into my hand (ow), took my vitals, took a urine test, had me strip and change into a hospital gown, the surgeon came and marked up my chest, and they told me what to expect

- after around and hour and half i was walked to the or. they sat me down on the operating table (it was very comfy and heated), they then started pushing anesthetic (this hurt a lil going in but then i was out like a light)

- i woke up in post-op monitoring. sorta drifting in and out. my mom was allowed to visit me once i was conscious. here they monitored my vitals and made sure i was stable before bringing me to my room. i had a high pulse for a while so i was delayed in moving to my room. my pain level was at about a 3 at this point. periodically nurses would come and open my binder to look at my chest and also come to strip and empty my drains. i got a first look at my results and it really is flat! i have bandages over my incisions and my nipples. these will be removed friday. 

- drains: theyre definitely uncomfortable and in the way. if u dont like blood itll definitely bother you. also where the drains come out of ur skin is definitely the most painful part. but honestly its manageable. my mom is the one doing the emptying for me so i dont have to worry about maneuvering my arms (its quite sore). cause of the drains you have to sleep on your back. surprisingly I havent had too much trouble with that

- the room i was moved to was private and a decent size. they gave me iv and apple juice at my request. i didnt feel nauseous luckily and was able to drink and eat. i also didnt get a sore throat from the breathing tube. my pain level still hasnt risen above a 3 and the nurses give me tylenol, gabapentin, and oxy. mostly the pain is around the drains and using my arm strength at all hurts. theres also soreness in my chest similar to when you work out/lift. overall the pain is very tolerable

- i stayed 1 night in the hospital. i didnt sleep very well but that just could be me and the fact its hard for me to sleep in strange places. the nurses came in throughout the night to take vitals and also give me painkillers

- my surgical team visited in the morning and checked how my chest looked. they gave me the ok. my nurse came and gave instructions for the week. my first followup is on friday. i cant shower until then

i went to the foot doctor today to get my lifelong ingrown toenail issue corrected on one toe after i stubbed it so bad the nail split down the middle and the entire top half of my toenail unseated and snapped off and this was easily the weirdest doctor visit ive ever had so strap in folks. so i was talking to the doctor and she was telling me about the procedure and i was like i get to watch right and she was like uh ya if u want ! and she was literally drop dead beautiful in an intelligent and passionate slightly frazzled doctor way and i was so fucking chill every second she was in the room.

the nurses come in and tell me theyre gonna apply the anesthetic and one of them is brand new and in training and i was like UH i need to be laid down. bc if i see the syringe while you do this i WILL pass out. and they were like sweet ok just fine and so the anesthetic involved two syringe applications (since both sides of my toenail get ingrown) basically ballooning up my foot with some anesthetic and as they did this they “froze” my toe with i believe nitrous? it was weird bc it wasnt the same chemical i was familiar with that was a numbing agent but it was a freezy thing anyway. anyway the first syringe goes smoothly. the second one???? FUCKING snaps in half on the way in. the plunger literally *pop* snaps in half and theyre like ...........thats never happened. so they go for another syringe and im like. heave ho in the brain trying to be ok but i was SMART AS SHIT before going to this appointment because i knew what the surgery would entail and i Wanted to watch. so i drank about half a twisted tea and i was feeling very liquid courage otherwise i literally mightve cried during this appointment. anyway. they come back and administer round two again? and THE SAME THING HAPPENS. and my toe is NOT NUMB YET and so i FEEL as the nurse says well im not wasting another needle AND MACGYVERS IT PRETTY MUCH TREATING MY TOE LIKE PLAY DOH AND SQUEEZING ANESTHETIC AROUND SWISHING IT THRU THE FLESH. no one knows about rose or her marriage save for a handful of people -- aka someone who had found out about it and blackmailed her with it. aka the daughter of the person who helped her deliver the baby on the battlefield. nat is also really weird with babies for this reason. 

my nat is an alcoholic. she’ll never admit it though. in the comics she drinks,,, every day. every time that she comes home from an assignment, she drinks. usually its wine but she’ll often go for harder stuff (typically russian stuff) when wine isn’t enough. 

it’s very rarely depicted in the comics (likely because she covers it up with sfx makeup) but nat has a red room tattoo on her left shoulder. she cant bring herself to remove it, because she wears her black widow name also like a badge of pride. she’s reclaimed everything that’s happened to her -- that tattoo is no different
