There are 5 cable-stayed bridges that cross the Chao Phraya River: Rama VIII, Rama IX, Bhumibol 1 and 2, Kanchanaphisek Bridge.

Of the 5, only Rama VIII and Bhumibol 1 and 2 bridges have been featured in shows and are frequently confused.

*Bhumibol 1 and 2 are connected to each other and will be referred to in conjunction with the other.

I'm glad about a number of things in ep 7&8 of The Eighth Sense - no lingering 'will he live, will he die?' hospital scenes*, TaeHyung getting his smug face punched (sadly only once), JoonPoo being a supportive bestie during the coming out scene, HEDWIG, boss lady, therapist.

And OOOH - our country mouse is kinda fierce - near death must agree with him. His very determined 'I'll take him back' stance in 7 followed by his facing down of Eun Ji - he was giving me Chonlatee vs Amp vibes. Go baby go!

JaeWon is struggling and self destructive and it doesn't help that his friends are absolutely the worst - he should kick them all to the curb except YoonWon.

Obviously, JaeWon is struggling and making self-destructive choices which are hurting JiHyun - claiming that what happened on the trip didn't mean anything to that sweet little face!!!

But I'm loving this - it's gorgeous even though its stressing me the fuck out. Am determined to finish it tonight, work be damned.

*although I imagine that if you watched it live the first half of 7 would have been a nightmare with its implication that JiHyun was dead.

The GMMTV Kissing Multiverse, an Update

Hello everyone! Thank you all for your help with the GMMTV Kissing Multiverse project so far. I thought I would give an update.

The first draft is here.

Rules

Must be lip to lip contact

Must be shown on screen in a GMMTV tv series (no kisses from ads, promotional content, etc.)

Poll Update

I enlisted all of your help deciding if the WaiKorn sorta kiss from the Bad Buddy x ATOTS Our Skyy 2 episodes actually involved lip touching and if the HeartLiMing kiss from Moonlight Chicken should be included.

The results are in: you voted that Jimmy and Drake's lips do NOT touch, therefore their kiss will be NOT be counted in this project. The HeartLiMing poll resulted in an exact tie (!!!) so I am here to be the tie breaker - upon careful review, if we don't see the lips touch, the kiss doesn't count (I think that will be easier for decision-making in the long run). Therefore, the HeartLiMing kiss will NOT be counted in this project. Thanks everyone for participating!

2. Jojo has an... outsized impact on the number of kissing pairs. He directed 5 of the top 9 shows with the most different kissing pairs - and roughly 17% of all the shows analyzed - but his shows contain about 30% of kisses present in the data set (note: I am just looking at kissing pair iterations here not at unique kissing pairs, e.g., Phuwin/Pond are a pair in two shows (once in a Jojo show and once in a non-Jojo show), so they are counted twice. Otherwise I would have to think about in what show/under which director a kissing pair first originated, how many different shows/directors they've kissed under... this section is mostly a quick exercise in showing how Jojo has a lot of different kissers in his shows so I'm not trying to be that statistically accurate.)

The median number of "different kissing pairs per show" of a Jojo show is 3.38, compared to a median of only 1.69 "different kissing pairs per show" in non-Jojo shows.

3. There were more same gender kissing pairs than mixed gender kissing pairs, though not by much. This may also reflect the data set used (I know I am more familiar with QLs than het GMMTV shows)

September 2022 BL Line Up

9/11 Fahlanruk (Thai)

GaGa Sundays, 10 eps, 45 min ea.

Fahlan (smart jock) meets Sherbet (edgy bad boy) sparks fly and they end up in bed together. Fahlan feels a lot more for Sherbet than is allowed, so he hides his feelings. Fahlan’s friends Ping and Tap, try to help their boy win his man, but are struggling with friends-to-lovers woes of their own. Looks to be a strong contender in the Thai BL pulp dumpster fire of joy arena. It’s using tropes we rarely see and it tonally seems like a combination of Nitiman + Y-Destiny’s players episode (2 of my 2021 favorites). I like sexually messy and identity confused college dramas but Love Mechanics might have tapped me out.

Y-novel adaptation featuring a pining seme and high heat, from director Koo who has a long back catalogue of shows, if not a great track record with BL (Club Friday and Tonhon Chonlatee are his).

9/14 Once Again (Korea)

Viki Thursdays, 8 eps, 25 min ea

Time-slip fantasy BL from Moving Picture studio & Idol Romance behind Wish You, Ryu's Wedding, Tasty Florida, Tinted With You, and Kissable Lips (also forthcoming Happy Ending Outside The Fence and The Circumstances of Pungdeok Villa Room 304). Stars actors (no idols) Moon Ji Young (also star in an upcoming BL The New Employee), Lee Hyuk Jun, and Kang Woo Jung.

JaeWoo lives with childhood trauma. He travels to the past where he meets JiHoon, a law student who JaeWoo admires most in the world. Will he be able to change both their fates?

Adaptation of Etsuko’s two mangas In The Apartment and More Than Words, starring Ryōko Fujino (Fujoshi, Ukkari Gei ni Kokuru), Yuzu Aoki (Kakafukaka), Daisuke Nakagawa (Colorful Love), and Daiki Kanechika (EXIT).

Told from the perspective of the female best friend who is against (?) the workplace gay relationship of her bff. Also there is another gay plot line.

From Thailand’s Mflow Entertainment for Ch3Thailand. Adapted from a Y-novel, directed by Nob (La Cuisine, Gen Y). Secondary couple Nan & Sippakorn are IRL husbands Arm & Porsch (Together with Me). Familiar faces include Gun (Love Area’s Valen) and Jom (Nitiman’s Jin).

This is actually the inception story of the characters of AiNi in Tonhon Chonlatee which I didn’t realize. Now I loved those characters, but I disliked that series from a story standpoint and this is the same author so I’m now nervous.

Comfort the Boy AKA A Shoulder to Cry On (Korea)

No international distribution as yet, 12 eps 20 min ea (?)

Looks to be a longer than usual KBL, got an R15+ rating for topic & vulgarity (we likey), stars idols Jaehan & Yechan BOTH from Kpop group OMEGA X (we scairedy). Interesting that an idol company is allowing two idols from the same group star in a BL together. *danger will robinson.”

Adaptation of Dongmul's manwha A Shoulder to Cry On, high school set, features a teasing confident gay, and a rich/poor pairing, about homophobia/gossip putting a scholarship in jeopardy.

SELF the series (Thai)

No international distribution as yet, no known length.

From Studio Common about a young artist who mysteriously loses his reflection and sees a strange boy in the mirror instead. Stars fresh faces, directed by Too (Triage) and NutSor (screenwriter of Dew).

Happy Ending Outside the Fence (Korea )

No international distribution as yet, probably usual KBL length.

JungWoo is a writer who disappeared after being treated unfairly in the publishing industry. TaeYoung, the head of a publishing company, admires and wants him to write again. JungHyun became a star by borrowing JungWoo's writings. The three characters interact and drama results. Stars idol Leo of VIXX.

Magic of Zero: Zero Supporter (Thai)

GMMTV feat advertisement specail (c 45 min) on their YT channel

Cupid's Last Wish spin off, features EarthMix in another bodyswap on this time with each other (KornWin). I disliked the origin show intensely, so I can’t see myself watching this.

when the characters know each other so well and prove their bond to outsiders. this includes but is not limited to:

"he'd never fall for someone like her" *he's head over heels* (Itazura na Kiss)

"i won't allow it!" *proceeds to give their blessings because they finally see how they're giving their kid what they failed to* (alternatively the couple flips them off and rides off into the sunset) (F4: Thailand iirc)

contract marriage or alternatively fake dating

nothing like faking it into making it 🥰 bonus points if a cocky mean outsider is into one of them and knows that it's a scam so they get a nasty surprise (idek where that is coming from but I've seen smth like that fs)

this trope's sister:

forced proximity combined with enemies to lovers

(one bed™️ can fit into this category)

oh to start on the wrong foot with someone but then be forced to see them in their natural state and appreciate the way they tie their hair before doing the dishes and help out the neighbours bring their groceries upstairs. to lie in bed thinking about how they bought an extra soda can ("it was on sale" ) that is coincidentally the flavour you love but they find gross. this trope is the gift that keeps on giving, you get domesticity, you get gradual mutual understanding, seeing them at their most vulnerable, it's so good. and they're basically prepared for marriage lol

i'm a sucker for a good variety of characters having unique to them intros (murder mystery staple) esp when it's like the camera going through an apartment building and you learn what type of person lives on each floor, it's so fun

on November 27, 2021, I started watching bad buddy out of idle curiosity, given a mutual's long meta post about the greatest first kiss in cinematic history. i watched all 5 available episodes and fell ass over teakettle for not only the show, but thai BL as well. it is now November 27, 2022. here's everything I've watched, ranked out of 10 (including BL from other countries and some non-BL as well). final count: 116. Ai Long Nhai consisted of all the other boys falling in love with even more boys plus an evil mother entered the fray. Mind you, all the dads are lovely so we should have guessed the mum would be a bad 'un.

Sometimes I see a bl or something where like. A person falls into a relationship with someone of the same gender without noticing it, and like figures out LATER they like the person they're with. (Chonlatee in Tonhon Chonlatee, Tine in Together with Me, even maybe Pat in Bad Buddy when he's clearly in love and flirting but not self aware of it until like people get him to self reflect)

And I'm like wow what must that be like. Maybe as a kid i must have been close to ppl the same gender and not realized I had little crushes? But like you don't really have any real feelings of crushes until a teen or later. And in middle school Just as real crushes were kicking in, in tiny little amounts, and to me i had no idea how to even identify a crush so I was guessing who I liked at random (often liking no one lol). Some friend told me people could be bi right around then. Some friend informed me hey fyi you may like girls and boys etc, so if you feel someone is cute and really like them, you may have a crush. So like? While it took another decade to figure out labels and self reflect more? It meant moving forward i was never gonna be in a situation that was gay and not know how I got there lol

I never could relate to liking someone and not realizing i did, to being practically dating someone (or close enough we could) and not having some awareness of if i at least liked their gender (even if I wasn't sure if I liked Them specifically). I could never relate to Tine lol. I could never have been the person thinking I'm straight, kissing a same gender friend, and somehow surprised I liked it or surprised I was happy to be close friends to them lol. I could never be so unaware of my own capacity to maybe fall for any gender

So its just like. Really funny to me how Often a show plot tends to be "person thinks they're straight" in bl stories etc. I'm like honey how did u get to this place in ur life... honey how did this happen to soooo many of u characters lol. Who knows. Maybe it's super common and I'm the outlier dudjdj

I do think its funny how it maybe colors our interpretation of characters tho - based on if we ever thought we could only like X gender, or just based on if that's the media type stories we usually see. Like when I saw Guardian I ASSUMED zhao yunlan knew he was bi and was flirting on purpose (which is true in the novel), but I've seen people read him as unaware he likes men and just oblivious flirting (which I find wild given how purposeful and direct he seems to be but like Fair Enough). When I saw Not Me I assumed White and Sean already knew they could like men, so I was not shocked there was no realizations of their sexuality, not shocked they immediately assumed the others actions may be romantic, and I was surprised some viewers thought Sean suddenly acting more into men and romantic was a Shock around ep 8. But if you go in expecting shows to present these characters as straight until proven otherwise, then yeah the Not Me writing is a shock and it does feel it comes out of nowhere. It's interesting to me how that prevalent story type setup colors our interpretation of stories overall and expecting them to keep doing it by default.
