23. Favorite picture of this character?

The shouty one in OotP

D'you know, I've not seen many pictures of Walburga, as it's not something I really seek out. I remember @ksenia3/@toujourspur13 had some excellent ones a few years ago.

I tend to draw her more as she appears in her portrait, or at least with that air about her (unless I'm drawing something from someone's story, as I'm then trying more to match the feeling expressed there).

I can write a pretty damn good formal letter. I’m not vain enough to compliment my own fiction writing but when it comes to writing a formal letter, be it an application, complaint, enquiry, you name it, I’m your girl. My partner and several friends ask me to write letters for them and my best friend, who is Hungarian and isn’t too confident with formal English, often sends me letters she’s written for “polishing”, as she calls it xD

Thoughts on Cygnus Black?

Weelll...first of all, since I haven’t drawn Cygnus so far...and I still haven’t got a proper portrait of him - here are some of my sketches.

//toujourspur12 *there is no canon Cygnus - so everything below is my pure imagination;) Cygnus is a big problem for everyone and especially for himself. However much we may wish it’s Walburga - but no - Cygnus is the real pain in the ass even for his parents, which is a paradox because he was the first to marry (and that is literally what they wanted for all their children in the first place).

As Cygnus is the youngest among his siblings and cousins he always feels the need to beat them in something; Cygnus is always jealous of them. Even his marriage is a pathetic attempt to get the upper hand. He is very competitive especially with Orion since they are of the same age. Initially, he wasn't actually that interested in Walburga/Orion marriage - he just always found that Orion being pathetically in love with his sister was very ridiculous...something to tease them about - well, at least it was like this until the moment he realized that his sister wasn't as strongly opposed to the marriage as she usually tried to show. That was a shock for him...a terrible discovery - because suddenly, completely out of the blue, Walburga got the chance to get much more from the marriage than he ever had. In his opinion, it is rather unfair that his reserved and volatile sister can get not a simple marriage of convenience but a marriage based on love. And suddenly his marriage with Druella started to seem like an unfortunate mistake. Cygnus always wants to be the first and get the best - but with the other four, the chances are awfully slim.

So I cannot say, in good conscience, that he loves Druella...no I don’t think so. He doesn't even respect her. It is a mix of resentment that she didn't give him an heir and the fact that the family doesn’t favour her (He cares what they think, his brother doesn't). It also influences his relationship with his wife. Mainly it’s Lucretia and Walburga who don’t like her but well...you know those two girls. When they only got married Cygnus had many hopes (hopes for an heir) - But alas - he got Bellatrix instead xD Anyway, not a good example of traditional marriage (very disappointing for all parties involved). I imagine that Cygnus has a fairly good relationship with his brother - of course, they seem very different but, in the end, secretly they rather enjoy each other's company. And also they both have a lot of strange acquaintances (from the world-building perspective there isn’t a lot of things to do in the wizarding world...I have to think about this...maybe if I had to create some activities for them I would...but I am sure that these two are certainly involved in some illegal grey schemes ( lol if you wonder how The Blacks got that rich - ASK Alphard and Cygnus - they know all about that).

Quidditch is his real passion (he likes Regulus because baby Reg shows genuine interest in the game while Sirius doesn’t stomach it only because his father doesn’t like it ahaha) 

Cygnus and his girls - he likes Bella and Andromeda more because they are like regular Blacks. Lucretia is his nightmare because she always gets what she wants and also she's impossibly impudent. His relationship with Walburga is complicated (on both sides).  

All in all - if only he could have made peace with himself then he would have been much happier. The question of him having a string of mistresses is open - I am inclined to think that he has some very special friends - actually, I have a sketch of a nameless witch...and it is written all over her face that she is an adventurous criminal...I guess she could be good for him...would make his life more complicated - exactly what he needs and wants.

Do you think Walburga is okay with Orion taking a few liberties before they are married?

Well actually...it’s up to you :) I always say that it’s better to decide for yourself...whatever you’re comfortable with.

My opinion: It’s not as if Orion misbehaves on regular basis lol. Ahhaha it is Orion! If we specifically speak about “Jan 13″ - it could be a one-time thing.

Though tbh taking into account that he’s a man very much in love with his fiancée I wouldn't say that there weren't moments when he got carried away - but NOT too far - it is an old-fashioned romance after all!!!

Generally speaking, I prefer to keep it slow-burn - because it wouldn’t be that interesting if Orion was like Cygnus. It certainly would have killed a big part of their charm. 

But the interesting thing is that I don't believe that Walburga would have pushed him away. I imagine that deep down she was kind of insecure about the whole thing - because she simply couldn't understand whether he truly loved her or he just wanted to please his father. She probably was in love with him long before she started to show any signs of it. Well, I always tend to blame Orion for their long courtship - he failed to express his feelings properly. Just imagine - he says “you are to be my wife” - she says “no” - it’s a vicious circle.  He did behave as if she’s promised to him and there was no room for discussions - you can’t say he’s a victim in that situation.

I believe that under all that ice Walburga was a little naive and had very girlish, so to speak, thoughts about the marriage. For her it wasn’t the question of whether he’s the best match she could have - it was the question of whether he’s ready to put her above their family. I think she had serious concerns on that front.

So I’d say that she’s more willing to trust his actions and at any rate, she wouldn’t be scandalized by any liberties - at least not really - she is a gigantic hypocrite - she may say one thing but it's not necessarily the thing she'd do when no-one else is looking. But then again Orion respects her a lot - so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ it’s up to you.

I’ve been chatting with my friend about this - and okay, I agree that she’d probably pushed him away if he’d been too insistent because of her girlish fears - but it’s such a hypothetical scenario 🤷🏻‍♀️ The way I imagine Orion he can’t be too bold before the wedding.

Shout-out to the person who asked me about Cygnus...really thank you. My ‘Jan 13″ diptych was such a joy to paint! And we only have it because I was preoccupied with Cygnus being the drama queen about our O&W otp ahahaha
